I am in shambles but I am taking a W since I was right about Ranboo's general involvement in the escape plot. Was not expecting Aimsey to come in with a metal chair and absolutely lose their shit but it was satisfying as hell.
The reveal that Ranboo had even given information from Aimsey to Techno about the flora was rough. Aimsey is a good person though so I'm not expecting them to punch him in the face but I really hope that they rip him a new one when they get the chance.
Also I love the use of oil as a metaphor for Wilbur's guilt in place of the waves and drowning when he's overwhelmed and suffering. I love how it ties to the waves being used for his mental state and I just ugh. I LOVE COOL LITERARY DEVICES‼️‼️‼️
Speaking of Phil though, holy shit. Their entire confrontation was insane /pos. I'm really curious as to what Phil and Techno were going to say before the boys cut them off. It makes you wonder if they could have convinced at least Wilbur to stay, given that he was having doubts about it. We will never know though but it gave us Wilbur using his Voice on Phil and holy shittt. Phil's pride from this reveal is so <33. Everything that Wilbur has said about the Voice makes sense to them; Techno and Phil have seen firsthand how little the sirens care about Tommy and Wilbur, that they're men and half sirens, they don't belong. The reveal that Wilbur can use his Voice (assuming that Ranboo hadn't woken up yet therefore hasn't told them that Tommy can also use his) is shattering. Despite all the trust that Wilbur and Phil have and the reports Ranboo has been giving, Wilbur still kept one final card to himself. Ofc he's proud.
Also Wilbur's tear before the shuttle door close eueueueu. Stars!sandduo my beloved. You are so </33
But fuck Essempi just waiting for them. Heartbreaking but also I am going to try make this more lighthearted by imagining Sapnap just waiting in that huge fucking ship for months on the off chance that if Wilbur and Tommy leave, they'll use their own shuttle. Probably not what happened but this is how I'm choosing to cope.
I wonder how the AE is going to react when they find out that Tommy and Wilbur were caught immediately after leaving orbit.
Great chapter, I am distraught
🦈
LMAO YOU WERE DEAD ON ABOUT RANBOO'S INVOLVEMENT I READ YOUR ASK AND WAS LIKE OH THEY GOT IT
yeah, uh, aimsey is PISSED. they're not a major character in this, but i still wanted them to have their due part with this as well. they're ranboo's closest friend in the palace. they've been friends for a WHILE now. they trusted ranboo with so much, only to find out he's spying on their friends (and then finds out he shared private information they gave him with his mentor). ranboo lied to them, and they're very, very hurt by it.
aaa thank you!! I was very proud of the connection to oil. I wanted the guilt to be described as something gross and heavy in your gut, something you can't ignore. along with that, oil on troubled waters is an actual turn of phrase since sailors used to drop oil into the sea to calm the waves, so I thought it was a clever way to tie that in as well.
god i've had that confrontation with aeduo in my head for SO long. phil's proud smile after wilbur used his Voice on him was something I thought of over a year ago now when I was first brainrotting this au. it was so so fun to finally write out. phil is so proud of wilbur for holding that card to his chest for so long. he's so proud to see just how cunning his boy can be.
(ranboo hadn't woken up by that point so yeah, that was a shock for both him and techno to find out)
LMAO ngl essempi kind of has just been waiting for months to see if they leave the planet. sapnap wasn't necessarily there the whole time, but they've had eyes on the planet for a while. like, they knew the brothers were on zephys iv. they knew eventually they'd have to leave, and there was mostly just some surveillance on the planet to see if the brothers ended up leaving with a full military in tow so they'd know if they needed to prepare for an invasion. but then the brothers just left on their own! all alone! perfect opportunity to scoop them up :)
oh aeduo are not gonna be happy with this development

👉🏻👈🏻 do you have any c!purpled fic recs I struggle with finding good fic about him :(
you have come to the right place i have so many. not all of them are c!purpled centric but sometimes he has to be a side character to get good characterization
Count the People - https://archiveofourown.org/works/29226483/chapters/71762874 starting off with The Purpled Fic. when i think of purpled fics i think of this one. you might have read this already. evil hypixel, purpled is basically a slave to them and has to play bedwars. has a lot of tiredtwt in it AND even better, Dream's the one who helps him. and techno's in it. you'll love it
god kings - https://archiveofourown.org/works/32259955/chapters/79955983 i havent reread this in a while, but i think you'd really enjoy it because it's dream and purpled centric! superhero au sort of? dream is purpled's mentor AND they have powers
Do you have a sign for that? -https://archiveofourown.org/works/28907994 this one is more of a funny crack fic, purpled + ponk duo. amazing.
send my feelings with a neat little bow -https://archiveofourown.org/works/30721679/chapters/75818741 ranboo-centric but purpled is a prominent side character. warning - it is unfinished and hasnt been updated in almost a year
you learned to sprint before you could crawl - https://archiveofourown.org/works/27671843/chapters/67716464 oh my god just read ANYTHING by toothpasteumbrella they are single-handedly keeping the cpurpled ao3 community alive. they have lots of short one shots this is one of my personal favorites by them
Tier X̅ - https://archiveofourown.org/works/33747667 purpled bedwars map limbo fic!! also another author rec - pegs is amazing and always has accurate cpurp, but this is my personal favorite!
The Last Heist - https://archiveofourown.org/works/29949084/chapters/73721340 again it's not purpled centric, it's tommy/sbi centric, but it's SO GOOD characterization of purpled. he doesnt show up that often so if you dont like the plot in general maybe dont read it but it has one of the few accurate portrayals of tommy and purpled's relationship
lies like second nature - https://archiveofourown.org/works/29775903 purpled hunger games fic. he's a career, gb80 is his mentor. oh my god so good
an approximation for home - https://archiveofourown.org/works/31929232 from the same author as the last one (lyre my beloved <3) purpled and tommy centric bedwars fighting ring au. also amazing
Platonic Divorcees and Going Out To Lunch: Purpled's Guide to Adopting an Alien - https://archiveofourown.org/works/32131000/chapters/79603546 i havent finished this one because it wasn't really my favorite type of fic but it's quackity and techno fight over who's basically adopting purpled. very funny, decent characterization iirc
Purpled's Surprise Party - https://archiveofourown.org/works/30991445 havent reread this one in awhile but it's a cute purpled gets appreciated by his friends fic
freakshow - https://archiveofourown.org/works/21926233?view_full_work=true okay i actually haven't read this one and im not sure how big of a character purpled is in it or if he's well characterized. but he's in it and it was rec'd to me by another purpled stan. some other tiredtwt people are in it too so it probably has decent characterization. it's a BNHA au!
The Tale of M-07 - https://archiveofourown.org/works/32103739 again i havent read this one, it was rec'd to me and apparently doesnt have the best characterization but hey purpled content! he's an assassin of sorts and then he like learns to be an actual person with the syndicate? or something?

I said C Team is the best group ever, no matter how you cut it, and this stream proved it. The C Team duos are just entertainment gold:
Tubbo & Tommy: The OGs. Chaotic ball of energy meets exasperated, yet mildly amused force.
Tubbo & Ranboo: Like taking a shot of pure serotonin.
Tubbo & Techno: Chaoticness squared. Their crazy feeds off each other.
Ranboo & Techno: Mentor and mentee with identical senses of humor. They both find themselves and each other fucking hilarious, and so do we.
Tommy & Ranboo: Jealousy arc gold. Fake rivalries, my beloveds.
Tommy & Techno: Peak brother vibes. Literally just a little brother annoying his older brother into exasperation

I mean, it doesn't have to be overtly serious (I hope!) Could be about Ranboo and Techno training and Ranboo accidentally bonks his mentor on the head a little too hard. He's of course very apologetic but Tech's just congratulating him for the good hit
Ah that’s a cute idea. There’s definitely no rule that whump has to be serious. That’s most often what people prefer, but there’s a niche for comedic whump as well!
When I write whump though I do tend to play it straight for angst purposes (angst writing my beloved) and I’m concerned about the tonal shift? ^^' If all my other drabbles for Febuwhump are more grave in tone, would it fit in dqslkjldksq especially since it’s the first chapter, I wouldn’t want to feel like I’m misleading people into reading the rest of the story if they expect more lighthearted comedy whump scenarios and then they get hit in the face with extreme angst

I’m finally here with the other half of the characters for the Hunger Games AU after my laptop decided to delete the first draft. It’ll probably conflict with some of the recent asks but it’s not like that’s the first time this is happening.
So, the Dream Team:
Dream: Victor from District One. Has been raised his whole life for the Games and always knew he was destined to win. Got roughly disillusioned when he actually landed in the arena and had to kill twenty-three kids to get out.
He won, obviously. After a sponsor (it was Bad and Skeppy, he later found out) sent him an axe and a shield he proceeded to absolutely slaughter the rest of the tributes. His seventeen kills would have been the highest kill count anyone had in centuries, hadn’t Techno killed even more the year before.
Is beloved by literally the entire Capitol (think Finnick). He’s charming (if he wants/has to), he’s the right amount of cocky, he knows how to entertain people and he has that taste of danger all the capitol people love to chase. Publicly practically only seen with the “Dream Team”, fellow One Victor Sapnap and George, another Carreer.
Behind the curtains, he’s different. Behind the curtains, the other victors barely see the three of them together and usually they’re arguing. Behind the curtains, his laugh isn’t dazzling but bitter and his smile is sharp and deadly. But still, you will not hear him say a bad word about the Capitol. Most victors who are not Sapnap, George or Eret will avoid him because of how loyal to their greatest enemies he is. His tributes tend to be taken out early, either in the chaos of the bloodbath or in the infighting of the carreer pack because everyone’s afraid of the tricks their mentor might have up his sleeves.
Quietly gives most of his money away under a couple of different names to people who need it more. After all, he doesn’t have a family to support and he spends most of his time in the Capitol anyway where he doesn’t need to pay for things.
Sapnap: Also a Victor from District One. Won three years after Dream and is to this day the only tribute Dream ever managed to bring out of the Arena.
Sapnap knows that he wasn’t really meant to win. He knows the Capitol would use every opportunity to get rid of him. That will not stop him from antagonizing every single stuck-up and arrogant capitol habitant he can. The only reasons why he’s not dead yet is that Dream’s covering for him and the fact that George has access to the security cameras over Punz, a peacekeeper who likes money more than his actual job. This is also where his reputation as a pet killer comes from.
Him getting chosen for the Games was actually intended to be a punishment for Dream. Dream was the Capitol’s darling and the Egg wanted Dream to be replacable. To have more victors like Dream as a backup. Eret’s win the year after Dream was nice and the Egg could use them but when Wilbur wins two years afterward, it’s obvious Dream is botching up his mentor job on purpose (Dream’s flipped to the other extreme and decided dying in the arena is probably the best for those kids). So the egg pulls some strings and Dream’s only friend and rival at the academy, Sapnap, gets miraculously chosen for the next Hunger Games and there’s no volunteers. Sapnap was supposed to die, multiple tributes were told to target him, but Sapnap (and Dream) surprised every one. In the end, Sapnap won by burning down half the arena and hunting down and slaughtering the survivors. He has the third-highest kill count of every victor currently alive, after Techno and Dream of course.
George: Now George, he’s the oddball. Also a carreer but from District Two, everyone expected great things from his games. What they didn’t expect was for the last tribute to die by drowning and George winning by default. He’s not actually killed or honestly done a whole lot during his Games. This is why the other victors like to joke about how he’s supposedly slept through his Games and only woke up when the capitol came to pull him out.
George likes it this way. He’s pretty and charming and people don’t think there’s much more to him than that. He frequently covers for Dream and Sapnap or charms some capitol people to calm them down after Sapnap was rude once again. Is probably the main reason Dream and Sapnap did not get sentenced to a public execution yet and uses Dream’s close ties with Punz as a way to quietly spy on the Capitol and erase the tracks of his friends.
Otherwise, he likes to fade into the shadows. Is reasonably friendly with pretty much all the victors, being the only one nobody would secretly like to slaughter. He’s also the most aware about how fucked up what the capitol did to them really is while Dream and Sapnap are either like “It wasn’t so bad.” or “I deserved it, I wanted it.” depending on day and mood.
Bad, Skeppy and Ant are all three capitol people who try to help as good as they can. They agree that it’s fucked up what the egg does but they’re not able to actually say that without being executed immediately as traitors. So they keep quiet and try to help where they can. They’re both close with the Dream Team and with Sam who’s a victor from District Three in this AU.
Later, when everything with the rebellion is going down, the egg’s probably going to kidnap them and torture them long enough to turn them into loyal capitol puppets and sent them after Dream because the egg knows about their friendship. Essentially it’s Peeta getting turned against Katniss but it’s three people so even worse.
Okay, I’m so sorry, this got far longer than it should have been so I’m splitting it up once again. I just have so many feelings about this AU. Only Dream Team for this post, the others are in the third part.

so, the Witcher au, right:
sbi are a thing. and by a thing, i mean phil + techno are old, old witchers- probably school of the bear or wolf, aloof and the stuff of legends, more monster than man [or so the public says]. wilbur is the bard that they rescue- from what isn't important, just that he looks at them, black-eyed and growling, and says hey, these are my witchers now and where their company was two, it is now three and their travels are that much lighter and merrier, and much like they've heard happens elsewhere with the white wolf and his buttercup, wilbur softens their reputation and sweetens their company.
tommy is rescued from a village. there's no village to return to- they barely get there in time to rescue him and one other young man, who takes up their offer to return to the keep. tommy, however, doesn't; tommy much prefers their company, and the company of tubbo, who stays with them whilst captain [griffin school witcher who's adopted him] is off in skellige where tubbo is forbidden from going yet.
so that's our sbi.
to detour for a moment, young jack manifold has recently joined the keep with a lack of elsewhere to go. he's too old to undergo the trial of the grasses, but not too old to learn his way around the world; a young noble lady and her companion- niki and fundy, as he soon finds out- take an interest in him and soon the halls are bursting with raucous cheer. he soon finds out how exactly they came about here- niki was fed up with the poisonous dealings of the court and fundy tired of being forgotten unless he was useful as a court pawn. eret- cat school witcher who'd taken them under her wing- had proven a better home, and they would defend each other to their dying breath. [this, jack finds out with a pleasant sort of surprise after an altercation, extends to him]
nevadas, kinoko- both are kingdoms. quackity ruling over the frivolously wealthy nevadas with an offer extended to fundy as a meaningful part of it, purpled as a cat school witcher, slime as some unknown creature, and foolish in the same boat. kinoko holds karl as king and sapnap and george as his right-hand men, and tina as the kingdom's most talented mage. the tension between these kingdoms swings between "just bed each other already" and "oh good, we're about to have a war"
and sapnap, george- dream team used to be a trio of witchers, before dream was found having broken several codes as a witcher [?] and the team disbanded. all three are wolf school.
a key arc, at one point, is ranboo's arc. here, mages are attempting to replicate the trial of the grasses at older ages, on nonhumans and older boys. the witchers catch wind and have to not only dispatch that particular council + rescue ranboo, but then there's a whole arc about gaining trust because ranboo has gotten a Double Dose of Be Afraid Of Witcher because of his time under mages and as some supernatural creature
tubbo and tommy are instrumental to breaking those walls down, yes, but so are the rest of sbi and the keep because yes <3
a final arc is dream seeding unrest against the witchers that turnt him out, against the kingdoms that spurned him; all he has to do is seed the thought that a particular school or kingdom was responsible for harming and kidnapping one of the witcher's adoptees and the war would take care of itself. bench trio, however, are menaces, and this goes exactly as well as expected.
other misc. notes:
- hannah is viper school, my beloved girlboss. or cat school.
- awesamkids is sam, a crane witcher, having a reputation for adopting. sam nook [thank you river] is his creation and the family's secret. tommy is the newest addition in all but formality [because sam knows better than to dispute sbi's claim on him but offers an informal place anyways.]
- badlands is a collection of mages, mercenaries, and witchers who would all kill and die for one another. punz is a cat school witcher who was purpled's mentor and brother in arms, bad + skeppy are a witcher + mage pair [bad the mage and skeppy the crane witcher], callahan the [redacted]
- i'm forgetting something. i have no clue what tho but i imagine i'll add on
- OH YES eret has been involved in several political assassinations. they don't talk about those anymore

botw au except Tubbo wants to defend hyrule w nukes rather than guardians, ranboo gets triple memory loss, and tommy is like 3 months old when the calamity happens
au roles + rambling under the cut
OK SO
-tubbo is the hyrulean prince obvi, nd ranboo is his assigned knight after he found tubbo lost in the hebra mountains
-tubbo was immediately like . ah yes . and got ranboo trained as his personal bodyguard bc he was funny
-wilbur & niki, the rito & gerudo champions respectively, see tubbo (n later ranboo) as their lil brother
-wilbur has an actual little brother, tommy, but he's still a chick during the calamity, which is why he's so desperate to fight as the champion :[
-he also took the role of champion on ahead of phil, saying it would be bad if phil died mid-fight due to being old . this did not age well
-phil takes the role of teba, wanting to beat medoh for killing wilbur, but his wings get ruined protecting tommy
-tommy, being relatively grown up now (rito age slower than hylians, so he's around ranboo's age technically . i love worldbuilding <3) decides to be ranboo's travelling companion after medoh is defeated
-i don't know how this works except he acts like a cucco mixed w wolf link . he's very protective but refuses to admit it
-niki, meanwhile, is the gerudo champion . i did this because there r 3 girls on the smp and i think she deserves lightning powers
-she n puffy are promised to each other (i figure the champions are about 18-20), n puffy planned to propose before the calamity hit
-we all know how well that went <3
-puffy takes over gerudo town . she remembers ranboo nd promises to help him regain his memories
-idk who the other champions would be lol . maybe gogy for mipha and sapnap/techno for daruk????
-death mountain -> the nether methinks . so yeah m thinking sapnap is daruk, w techno as his mentor???
-techno didn't wanna b caught up in the calamity plus he's allergic to the prestige that being a champion comes with, so he handed his title to sapnap
-and then sapnap died LOL
-so techno is like a more competent yunobo??? maybe instead of rescuing him ranboo has to get to his ~mysterious training grounds~ (the middle of a pit of lava)
-DREAM IS MIPHA . he n techno used to be rivals nd buddies, but when he became champion they had a big fight and fell out
-he george and sapnap were functionally-immortal buddies :[
-george went thru the five stages of grief except he got stuck at denial and went into a sleep coma . rip gogy
-zora quest could be waking him up??? maybe??? i think he goes and mopes at waterfalls where the dt used to hang out
-moving on
-fundy is 100% one of the sheikah scientists . i think sam is too
-wait hold on i had an idea
-(c) means champion, (s) means scientist
-pre-calamity: tubbo, ranboo(c), dream(c), george, sapnap(c), techno, phil, wilbur(c), niki(c), puffy, fundy(s), sam(s)
-post-calamity: tubbo, ranboo(c), george(c), techno(c), phil(c), puffy(c), tommy, fundy(s), sam(s)
-kinda depressing ig
-ive forgotten where i was going w this but god i hope i finish this one day
-champions my beloveds

yesssss you put it exactly right the motivations feel Fresh in comparison to well, Tommy wanting to kill Dream for being evil again (in fairness Ranboo is my favorite so I’m biased but yeah). There’s no way Phil won’t be heavily invested in that revival book, for both bringing back Wilbur and for safeguarding himself. Training Arc My Beloved Come To Me, Give Me Boreal Boys
i really, like DESPERATLY want phil and ranboo to have like a Long and Serious discussion about the book because like phil doesnt Get a second or third change and yeah hes philza minecraft and usually doesnt die but its still a huge risk (specially since hes a mentor character /j)
like even without wilbur like... phil doesnt want to die, techno doesnt want phil to die and wanting to get rid of problems by taking all their canon lives seems sus as hell

In Memoriam: My Dear Friend and Colleague Ian Kerr
Nearly twenty years ago, Ian Kerr was a rising star in the law and technology field at the University of Western Ontario. He had already published on the role of computers as intelligent agents in the nascent world of electronic commerce and was crafting new courses examining the legal and ethical challenges posed by machines and the law. In the fall of 1999 – about a year after I had arrived at Ottawa – he agreed to a visit to consider coming to help build a leading program focused on law and tech. I spent the day trying to convince Ian to come, offering tours of the law school, the city’s foodie hot spots, and a dinner at my house. My closing argument was that no matter his decision, this was going to happen since Ottawa was ideally situated to lead on tech law and policy and that there was no better place for him, personally or professionally.
I’m heartened that Ian told me during my last visit with him at the Ottawa Hospital that the decision was one of the best he ever made. But I was wrong. This wasn’t just going to happen. It happened because Ian – my colleague, friend, advisor, and professional partner – made it so.
Ian passed away last night after months of battling complications from cancer. He was a singular talent, whose impact not just on the field, but on everyone he worked with, taught, mentored, or lectured will be felt for decades to come.
He was a prescient scholar who proposed the title of Canada Research Chair in Law, Ethics, and Technology years before the ethical implications of technologies would emerge as a widespread societal issue. His work spanned so many issues – robotics and the law, artificial intelligence, privacy, surveillance, security, digital rights management, algorithms, electronic contracting, human rights, and human enhancement – that he needed to reshape the standard approach to the reporting of academic achievement in order to convey even a fraction of his prodigious output, while his four-way cross-appointment to medicine, information studies, and philosophy reflected a commitment to the study of law and ethics beyond the law school.
He was an extraordinary teacher, who won awards everywhere he went, leaving his students with indelible memories of opening music to set the tone, visually remarkable slides and multimedia materials that challenged students to think in new ways, and an engaging lecture approach that endeavoured to bring out the best in everyone. That teaching extended to the entire globe: teaching the world’s data protection and privacy commissioners on the privacy and technology at their annual conference in Morocco in 2016, delivering keynote addresses in countries around the world from Iceland to Singapore, and serving as a visiting professor at institutions such as New York University, Tel Aviv University, the University of Haifa, Pompeu Fabra University in Spain, and Tilburg University in the Netherlands.
He was a great builder, who brought vision and passion to creating new models for teaching, research, and student exchange. It was Ian that led to the creation of our LL.M. in Law and Technology that counts hundreds of students as past alumni. It was Ian that developed the much-beloved Techno-Rico course with the University of Puerto Rico that serves as model for many other courses including mine with the University of Haifa. It was Ian that led the quintessential multi-disciplinary large scale research project with ID Trail, a multi-million dollar initiative that launched many new careers, publications, and provided the roadmap for inclusive, forward-looking, team-based research projects. And it was Ian that worked with successive deans – Bruce, Nathalie, and Adam – on hiring, programming, and a myriad of other issues.
He was a dynamic leader, the heart and soul of the technology law program that blossomed years after we envisioned it around the kitchen table. For the amazing group of professors, program directors, research managers, and supporters, there were no limits to Ian’s generosity and his advice, enthusiasm, and support represented the not-so-secret sauce behind our success.
He was an exceptional advocate, changing the law through his scholarship and tireless efforts. Whether quoted by the Supreme Court of Canada, on the floor of the House of Commons, or in government reports, Ian not only identified the legal challenges associated with law and technology, he influenced the solutions. His work on supporting a global ban on Lethal Autonomous Weapons brought him to the United Nations for an address to member states and succeeded in convincing some of the world’s greatest computer scientists to join him at the policy table.
He was pioneer, joining forces in 2012 with Michael Froomkin, Ryan Calo, and Markus Wagner to launch the first We Robot conference. That event has since become the leading conference of its kind, resulting in ground-breaking scholarship and a generation of new scholars in the robotics law field. It was one of Ian’s proudest achievements that We Robot will come to Ottawa for the first time next year.
It is tempting – indeed deserving – to focus on a truly breathtaking record of academic achievement. Ian was widely recognized as a global leader and brought enormous pride to all of his colleagues. He was one of us and showed how Canadians can thrive on the world stage. Yet Ian’s towering career does not tell the most important part of the story nor explain why his loss is so difficult.
It was Ian the person, the mentor, the collaborator, the friend, that sparkles the most from this brightest of stars. He was a creative genius, equally comfortable baking challahs, reciting poetic rock lyrics, or drumming in a band as he was on the biggest academic stage. Earlier this year, he generously provided me with his Canada Research Chair renewal application in order to assist with my own. What stands out in those documents was his incredible love for, and commitment to, his colleagues and students. Over just the last decade, he co-authored pieces with Jena McGill, Katie Szilagyi, Katie Black, Jason Millar, Carys Craig, Jennifer Chandler, Timothy Caufield, Carissima Mathen, Noel Corriveau, Michael Froomkin, Joelle Pineau, Jennifer Barrigar, Jacqueline Burkell, Alex Cameron, Jessica Earle, and Daphne Gilbert. He co-edited works with Mitchell McInnes, Tony VanDuzer, Ryan Calo, Michael Froomkin, Valerie Steeves, Carole Lucock, and Jason Millar. It is an astonishing record of collaboration, demonstrating how Ian was most at home working with others, sharing with others, and ensuring that the spotlight was on others.
You didn’t have to write with Ian to know about his generosity, however. I have never met a colleague more willing to share his work or time. His supervisions of graduate students is legendary with members of Kerr graduate family holding prominent posts at universities around the world. His research assistants and classroom students held a particularly special place in his heart as evidenced by watching Ian continuously pop up and down during convocation as a steady stream of students invariably saved their biggest smile for his enthusiastic, warm embrace as they crossed the stage.
Of course, Ian reserved his biggest smiles and love for his family. A number of years ago, I convinced him to join my fantasy football league. He said yes, not because he was big football fan, but rather because he saw it as a great opportunity to play with his father, who was back home in Calgary. The Steel Kerrtains never managed to snag a title, but Ian had an entirely different goal in mind.
When I last saw Ian in the ICU ward, the talk quickly turned to Erin and Ruby. He pointed to their pictures on the hospital wall, noting that his family was his most important success story as his love for them – and them him – meant everything. They gave him the strength to fight his terrible disease and family life provided the fulfillment and happiness that he wished for everyone.
Last month, about two weeks after Ian was back in the hospital, I ran into our colleague Vanessa Gruben in the law school foyer. Vanessa told me that Ian had been moved to ICU hours before and that the situation was not good. I walked up to my office numbed by the news and as I opened the hallway door that leads to my office, I looked down the hall as I always do. It was then that I realized that for the past twenty years, the first thing I have done when I enter the hallway is look to see if the door to Ian’s office – just two down from mine – was cracked open with some light shining through. I’m not totally sure why. Sometimes I would pop in to say hi, sometimes not. But there was something reassuring knowing that my friend and partner was there. I don’t think I’ll ever stop looking for that light.
