uh oh.

i’m thinking about how ronan wants to return to a home that doesn’t exist anymore. in the dream thieves he is desperate to go home and when he finally gets to, it isn’t the same. the place itself is the same, he still knows where the silverware is and where to find baby mice, but the pureness and comfort is tainted. home for ronan was always his family together, or at least his mother and brothers together, in a self-described paradise — a place dreamt to be perfection.

but that perfection, the simplicity of his childhood home, of his childhood is gone. having this physical displacement from the barns is representational of ronan’s loss of his actual childhood — by loosing his father, his mother, and his close relationship to his brothers, ronan’s childhood bubble is abruptly popped. his longing to go home, to have everything stay the same forever is so goddamn painful because it’s so familiar for so many of us. wanting to go to a place or a time or back to a person that doesn’t exist anymore or at least not in the context you knew it/them in, is part of growing up. it’s realizing the limitations of comfort and time. realizing that those limitations apply to people and place.

I'm rereading the Raven cycle and as someone who moved to another country far away from what is supposed to be my home, the themes of home really do hit hard.

Gansey, searching for a place to call home ever since he was a child, only to realize it might be people instead,

Blue, having a safe space to return to and feeling like she belongs while simultaneously missing something crucial she can't name,

Adam, escaping his abusive father, his home that never felt like one, to carve his own space in the world where he truly feels like he is a person and

Ronan, having had such a beautiful childhood home for it only to be taken away from him but he held onto the concept of home he built in his head and in the end it paid off because he got it back and he gained a new home along the way amongst his friends.

They all redefine their notion of home throughout the series and I think they are able to (re)claim places as their homes because they found homes in each other that comforted them when their spaces couldn't.
