Must-read Destiel fics - my superduper Nov. 5th rec list

Three years ago, on the blessed day of November 5th, 2020, I had:

never seen an episode of SPN,

only had a vague inkling of what the two pale coconuts were on about,

and I hee-heed and ha-had with the rest of Tumblr about the love confession scene and the Internet errupting in an unparalleled craze

At first I thought, that's it.

Then ... I got curious. I watched some YouTube Destiel supercuts. I read some fic (I think @andhumanslovedstories beautiful Cas/OC fic was my entry point?). I read meta. I watched some more YouTube scene packs. I read even more fic. I watched some of S4, some of S1, some random fan fav episodes. And then Destiel lodged itself so deeply, thouroughly into my brain that it took over and hasn't relinquished control in the last two years. The most tenacious, pervasive brain worm to date.

This ship got it all, and this fandom got it all, and there's such delightful, powerful, batshit crazy, romantic, expertedly crafted fanfic out there, it's like being a starving child in the world's biggest candystore.

So without further ado, here's some of my very favorite fics from this infinite trove, with all my thanks to the wonderful writers who keep delighting and awing me with their dedication and craft. There'll of course be some recency bias at play but you can browse my bookmarks over here to chose from over 100 excellent and well-curated SPN stories.

💕CATEGORY: SWOONWORTHY💕

Wildly romantic fics that warm you up from the inside.

It Won't Be Perfect by someonetoanyone (10K words) Summary: Dean daydreams about what it'd be like to let himself love Cas freely.

Why I love it: the humor, the spot-on characterizations, and the quintessential late season Destiel-ness of being so deeply love with your best friend that it's too big to actually do anything about. Just. So warm.

Rock Lobster by Ginger Fail (13K) Summary: Cas decides that the lobsters Dean planned to cook need to get back home. Impromptu beach vacation ensues!

Why I love it: This road trip story is fresh and invigorating like a sea breeze! Fun, entertaining and full of deep, deep fondness.

Seek to Know You Better by ahurston (32K)

Summary: On a road trip, Dean and Cas play the 36 Questions That Lead To Love.

Why I love it: They’re so deliberatedly, carefully starting a relationship here. They try so hard to bridge the gaps and meet each other halfway. A very mature take on love that feels nourishing.

Fics that make you go BARK BARK BARK.

samson went back to bed by piesexuality (9k, @twoheadedcas) Summary: Cas strikes a deal with Chuck - keeping his family together comes at the price of their free will.

Why I love it: What if Cas got his revenge for the Mala'ak box? What if love came at the price of everything you've been fighting for? What if a story twisted the knife oh so sweetly? Each word of this one lands a punch. Made me insane in the best of ways (cue pinned fanart).

In sickness by @saintedcastiel (41K) Summary: S4 redux but Castiel has a fetish: giving Dean the sniffles.

Why I love it: This one is soooo. Can barely find words for it. It taps into Cas' early season alienness and psychosexual obsession with Dean, brilliantly demonstrates Casdean vs Samruby parallels, and each word is just. Perfect. ARGH!

so much smoke in a hall full of mirrors by AreYouReady (6K, @autisticandroids ) Summary: Godstiel is losing his heavenly war. Crowley provides a compliant Dean-doll for him to release his frustrations upon.

Why I love it: Urgh, this one is sooo dark. Taps into the scary, intimidating and alien aspects of Godstiel so well. Gore, consent and psychosexual issues galore. Delicious.

Special mention: In a Parked Car, Exhuming Ophelia by @an-android-in-a-tutu (17K). Still need to comment properly ;)

💣CATEGORY: EMOTIONAL WRECKING BALLS💣

Angsty fics that tear you to pieces to remake you better.

What Used To Be Mine by someonetoanyone (48K words) Summary: Dean never makes his apology prayer in Purgatory - Cas dies, Dean mourns.

Why I love it: Oh god, this is a heavy hitter. Just, straight up insurmontable grief, packaged in poetic, raw language to make you shed tears and tears. Loved it so much.

Ignite your bones By ilovehowyouletmefall (67K, @angelinthefire) Summary: Dean accepts Chuck's deal: killing Sam to save the world.

Why I love it: Cruuuuel cruel premise for a story that doesn’t pull its punches. It gets dark in Dean’s head and everyone around him suffers. Wonderfully written. The ending set my brain on fire.

Right Where you Left Me by outdean (93K, @armandgender)

Summary: Cas comes back from the Empty after 10 years to find Dean married to another man.

Why I love it: This one is a riiiide. When grief has become a part of you but your love comes back… When you return from the dead and have to carve a new space into the world for yourself... nothing is easy here, but the emotions are INTENSE. Also, autistic!Cas for the win.

Special mention: Who Ya Gonna Call? by saintedcastiel (50K) and Clear skies in spring by enochianprayer (WIP)

💥CATEGORY: EPIC RIDES💥

Expansive, wild adventures with lots of ups and downs

Spirit of the West by teen_dean (140K, @urne-buriall)

Summary: An 18y old Dean grew up on a horse farm – cue veterinarian Castiel. The summer of a lifetime ensues.

Why I love it: So this is one of my very favorite stories, ever ever, and I cannot recommand enough to immediatedly suscribe to the author’s Substack to be able to follow it in „real time“ next summer. It’s cinematic, rich, full of darkness and light, it’s everything a story can aspire to, I’m just. I just really love it.

Second Verse, Same as The First by LaLaCat1 (135K)

Summary: Endverse!Cas is sent back to the start of S1 and is determined to make things right this time round.

Why I love it: a desperate and badass Cas, unfridging everyone, a thrilling plot, moments of awesome for the entire cast, gripping action scenes, a romance for the ages… this is a genuinely amazing story.

back road, black road by eden22 (167K)

Summary: 18y old Sam gets kidnapped by Hell on his way to Stanford. Dean tries to deal.

Why I love it: So this one’s not Destiel-centric but does have wonderful Destiel moments. It’s also very heavy on the gore and the angst (NOT for the faint of stomach), but expertly crafted, fascinating and frankly it deserves more love. Held my breath for half the read and never knew where it’d take me.

Special mention: It's The End Of The World (As We Know It) by tiamatv (140K)

Uproariously funny stories about the intricate rituals these two weirdos get up too.

Life Skills by ilovehowyouletmefall (26K)

Summary: Dean teaches a newly human Cas how to be „a real man“.

Why I love it: Dean coming to Big Self-Realizations while trying to have platonic threesomes with Cas is so perfect. Very endearing, tender and funny. Also, smoking hot sex.

the cheapest room in the house by biggaybenny (89K)

Summary: Dean downloads Grindr for Cas

Why I love it: Just. Late season Dean being deranged about Cas’ sexuality while everyone watches on in utter confusion. Equally hilarious and deeply moving

according to all known laws of life by @sobsicles (29k)

Summary: Cas comes back from the Empty to a Dean who won’t stop playing gay chicken.

Why I love it: They are both such petty, insane weirdos in this one. They said „can every situation be turned into a squabble“ and didn’t wait for an answer. So funny, so tender

do we have any information on the approximate dates or year that TMA takes place in? I’m obsessed with timelines and I’m so curious about if those dates are Known or not or can only be guessed about

yes we do! some parts of the timeline are a little vague, but every live and "in situ" statement (with a few exceptions) has a date attached to it. Okay, so, it's safe to say I'm pretty much back to tumblr, yeah!

Full disclosure, over the past... year and a half? I've been both swaaammmped with work (post-covid economic crisis, I work for myself so I had to adjust all sorts of things and work more) and also not feeling social for long periods. Took lots of social media breaks / fandom breaks to just enjoy my blorbos quietly, which felt super needed cause I was overall pretty overwhelmed, so it was nice.

I have actual free time on my hands again tho!! Free time!! And I'm recharged and feeling a ton more like myself + social + wanting to enjoy the blorbos out loud.

Oh, yeah, I'm following the anime releases of Tokyo Revengers + monthly BSD more closely these days, so that's what I'm gonna be on fandom-wise.

After the TR season is done airing I'm gonna catch up with all the BSD anime eps I haven't watched yet (I just watched the light novel adaptation at the start of S4 and that's where I left off, just kept following the manga and then the final S5 ep LMAO). I'm holding back REALLY HARD from just binging it right now, but I know if I let myself do that I'm gonna obsess so hard I won't do anything else haha.

Probably gonna post a couple of things I made while taking my breaks!!

But yeah, nice to be back and to be seeing a lot of friends here again!!

My jiara era never left 3 years on.

You know the wait for season 3 looking back was so painfully long. 1 year and 7 months too long. The fact the cast could be filming season 4 in 8-10 weeks time with release potentially being June next year? ( my guess) I can deal with that considering the painful wait for season 3, and you know cannon jiara to obsess over for another year. I’m so excited already hahaha. We Stan early renewals ( what if Netflix already has budgeted for season 5/6 but they’re like not telling us or the cast yet but the creators know 🤡)

RIGHT!? I've been holed up in a dark room surviving off saltines and jiara content since April 2020.

It really was bloody long. The bts we got was fun but it took so long for production to even start, those were the dark days. I really hope they do start filming soon, I can't imagine why they would want to wait much longer. And I hope they film mostly in South Carolina so we can get some steady bts.

Netflix does seem to have a lot of faith in the show and probably want to make it a tentpole series (especially with Stranger Things ending). The promo this year was truly crazy. I suspect there was probably contract negotiations after S2 (I don't know if there was official confirmation of this but I know Madelyn talked recently about them being paid equally which is strong evidence they negotiated imo) and I hope they locked the cast down for a couple more seasons. If salary negotiation is out of the way for another couple of years I can see it becoming easier for them to plan for a future renewal. I don't think anything is locked yet, but it's definitely telling that they renewed S4 before S3 even dropped after a 19 month wait between seasons. That's really bold and they must have some seriously good data on the shows performance.

The early renewal has been such a relief. We can enjoy the season and take our time with it and not worry about the scales tipping the wrong way.

There and Back Again - Part 1

Welcome to my very long Eddie x fem!reader S4 rewrite! I've had a ton of fun writing this, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

Many, many thanks to @skyfall8600 whose excellent Sucked In series not only inspired this one, but brought me out of a years-long writing slump! The first few parts of this series are heavily inspired by her work, while diverging more significantly later on. Regardless, I wholeheartedly recommend her work, and thank her for allowing me to use a few of her excellent ideas!

At this point, it was pretty safe to say that you were obsessed with Stranger Things.

Sure, you had watched it in 2016 along with everyone else and enjoyed it, keeping up with the release of each season and occasionally theorizing about the show’s future. But all in all, it was a relatively minor part of your life. Hell, it was a relatively minor part of the media you consumed.

Until summer 2022, that is.

The moment you laid eyes on the dark brown curls of Eddie Munson, you knew you were a goddamn goner.

You’d had crushes on fictional characters before, of course—Narnia’s Peter Pevensie had been a particular childhood favorite—but never before had one affected you so deeply. You found yourself daydreaming about life in Hawkins as an escape from your everyday worries, occasionally wishing you could take a swing at a demodog rather than deal with your landlord. You knew these were selfish thoughts; fighting for your life was no laughing matter. But sometimes, when you imagined the deep brown eyes and flyaway curls of a certain metalhead…well. You could only be so strong.

It was after one of those particularly trying days that you walked in the door of your home, dropped your bag on the floor, and trudged to your couch before flopping facedown into the cushions. A low groan escaped your lips, muffled by the worn fabric. God, what a day. Frustration after frustration and problem after problem had left you utterly and completely drained. You wanted only to disappear from your life for a while, to daydream yourself into the arms of Eddie Munson and never wake up.

Nearly whimpering at the motion of your sore muscles, you heaved yourself onto your side and felt for the remote. There was only one show you could count on to distract you after a day like this. Pulling up Netflix, you decided on the end of season three; there was something about the epic Battle of Starcourt that felt just right for your mood. Sighing, you pressed play, not even bothering to watch the screen. You’d seen it so many times at this point, you weren’t even watching it for the story. You just wanted to hear the characters’ voices, to feel the comfort of friendship they provided, imagined as it was. As you drifted off, you smiled as you heard the familiar chatter of Hawkins voices around you, the perfect symphony for sleep.

The night air was unnaturally cold as you slept, causing you to shiver and pull the blanket above you as you stayed cocooned on the couch. Your whole body started to sweat, the air dry and cold as it sliced into your lungs.

You shifted slightly, feeling suddenly uncomfortable. The couch was old, sure, but now it felt as hard as stone. You frowned and opened your eyes. A confusion of images flashed before you, taking several moments for you to process—rocks. Trees. Cloudy sky.

“What on earth?” you muttered to yourself, rubbing your eyes sleepily. You tried to see between the trees, the soft glow of the sunrise giving more color to your surroundings. Looking around, you began to realize that these were not, in fact, the woods outside your house; there was too little scrub brush here, the trees spaced too widely apart. The air, too, was too cold for August, even in the early morning, and the trees seemed to be bare.

Your breaths became faster and shallower as you started to really panic. You’d never even seen this place before; how on earth had you gotten here? Had you been abducted and drugged? You noticed a nearby path and set off down it, in case there were any potential kidnappers hanging around. You started to hear the sounds of traffic as you continued, growing louder with each step you took. Finally, you emerged onto a city street, but definitely not one you recognized. The cars were all older models—not necessarily unusual, but it was a bit odd not to see one newer sedan or pickup.

You frowned as you noticed a group of rowdy teenagers walking toward you. You knew the eighties were coming back, but wasn’t this taking a bit far? The boys sported full-on mullets and bootcut jeans, the girls with bright eyeshadow and hair that looked burnt to the third degree. Is this some prank I’m not in on? You wondered, staring as they passed. They stared back, raising their eyebrows in cruel appraisal.

“Where’d you get those, the fucking trash?” one girl asked, eyeing your distressed jeans.

“Yeah, screw you too,” you muttered, too freaked out to pay much attention to the insult. You continued walking, hearing the group’s laughter echo behind you. It’s like they’ve never seen distressed jeans before, you thought, shaking your head.

Suddenly, your blood ran cold. The cars. The clothes. The comment…

Your eyes widened, everything you’d noticed in the corner of your eye suddenly taking on a whole new significance. Your chest got tight with anxiety, but you tried to calm it. That’s not possible, Y/N. It’s just an older block and those kids were playing a joke on you. Probably hate anyone wearing anything more than a week out of date—as if the eighties weren’t forty years ago. You shook your head vigorously, trying to put the suspicions out of your mind.

Walking another block and a half, you finally spotted what you’d been subconsciously looking for: a newspaper stand.

“Do you...do you have today’s paper?” you asked the attendant, your throat suddenly dry.

“Here you are, sweetheart,” the old man said, slapping the thick newspaper down on the counter. “February 21st, 1986. One dollar, please.”

You started at the paper, your eyes refusing to process the words on the page. You could see the shapes of the letters, could distinguish between the black ink and white paper, but you couldn’t resolve the images into meaningful shapes—at least, not ones that made any sense.

The paper read, FEBRUARY 21, 1986 – HAWKINS POST.

Hawkins Post. 1986. Hawkins. Your face grew as pale as the newsprint, the attendant frowning at your expression.

“You that interested in the factory strike, hon?” He asked, nodding to the headline.

“Uh…my father works there,” you say quickly, your mind racing. “Sorry, but I’ve got to go—thanks for showing me!”

You walked briskly away from the stand, head reeling as the attendant shook his head, muttering something about non-paying customers.

This can’t be real. I’m in Hawkins, Indiana—a town which does not exist—and it’s 1986, over a decade before I was even born. You had to be dreaming, you decided. That was the only explanation that made sense. But even as you thought it, you knew in your gut it wasn’t true. You were too aware of your body, the cold chill of winter air on your face, your heart hammering in your chest. No, this was reality, as impossible as it seemed.

People stared as you walked past, though you were too wrapped up in panic to take much notice. You stood out amongst the eighties-clad citizens: torn jeans, mushroom t-shirt, leather jacket. How the fuck had this happened?

Your thoughts spiraled as you walked, dazed and unsure of what to do. Where could you go? It’s not like you knew anyone here—not really knew, and besides, you didn’t know where anything was, much less how to get there.

Your thoughts were forcibly interrupted when someone crashed into you.

“Oh, I’m so sorry,” a gentle male voice said, offering you a hand as you picked yourself up.

“It was my fault, I wan’t—” You stopped abruptly when you saw who had run into you. “Mr. Clark?” you asked, incredulous.

“That’s me,” he said, an uncertain smile on his face. “Do I know you?”

You just gaped at him, unable to believe what you were seeing. It’s real. I’m really here, you thought, flabbergasted.

“I, um,” you stammered, trying to think of a reasonable explanation. “I’m—Dustin’s cousin!” you nearly shouted as it came to you. “He’s talked a lot about you.”

Mr. Clark’s smile became genuine as you spoke.

“Ah, young Henderson,” he said, raising his eyes to heaven. “A smart young man, that one. But a little too eager for adventure, if you ask me.” You laughed.

“I couldn’t agree more,” you said. “Any idea where I could find him right now? It’s, um, a surprise visit,” you added as Mr. Clark’s brows furrowed in confusion.

“I would hope he’s at the high school,” he said, frowning, “Seeing as it’s ten o’clock on a Friday morning. I’m just out on a coffee run myself,” he said, gesturing to the drink carrier in his hand. Shit. Of course he’s at school, you thought, cursing yourself silently. “I believe Mr. Harrington picks him up, though, if you’d like to be there when Dustin gets out. He works over at Family Video,” Mr. Clark said, indicating the direction he had come from.

Steve and Robin! Perfect!

“Would you mind giving me directions to Family Video?” you asked in the “teacher’s pet” voice that had gotten you through high school and college. “I’d like to see my cousin as soon as possible,” you added, flashing Mr. Clark a brilliant smile.

“Not at all!” he said, the epitome of good manners. “It’s down three blocks, then take a left on Hoover Circle—you can’t miss it.”

“Thank you so much,” you said sincerely, gratitude filling you down to the tips of your toes. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.”

Mr. Clark looked at you, a little curious as to the extremity of your reaction to some simple directions.

“No problem,” he said finally, too polite to mention it. “Tell Dustin I say hello!”

“Will do!” you called back, already walking toward Family Video with all the speed you could muster.

A destination. Finally.

Okay so about YOU, let me spoil you then - I hope it'll sense made - in s4 Joe went to the UK started hanging out with insufferable posh people and "met" a guy named Reese (he was a writer and was running for Mayor of London). Turned out Reese was killing said posh twats and tried to frame Joe, became his stalker, wanted to be killing mates together (the Reese x Joe ship has sailed ajsuajahjsjsja). BUT! Lots of people noticed that during gatherings Joe was the only one who interacted with Reese and like we suspected - that whole thing was only in Joe's head cause he has split personality. So he basically dissociates and doesn't know what's going on. Reese was a real guy that Joe was obsessed with, but they never actually met and Joe was behind all the murders. Now that Joe accepted the truth and still wants to act like a saviour I feel even more icky about s5, he was always awful but his delusional monologues were funny. the issue with mike’s love confession to el in season 4

this all revolves around michael wheeler. mike’s recurring problem in seasons 3 and 4 has been vocalizing his love to his girlfriend. he’s said it when he was surrounded by people which he claims was “heat of the moment”. yet it’s shown time and time again that he can’t get it out to eleven unprompted. (keep in mind that the only other person shown on the show to also have this issue is nancy, who couldn’t express her love vocally to steve because she wasn’t actually in love with him.)

this perspective contrasts greatly with el, who can vocalize it and mean it. this says a lot based on her neglectful and abusive childhood and how she really only starts to learn what love even is at the age of 12. eleven is being open and vulnerable in the relationship and this is clear in the show. mike shouldn’t have any reason to believe that his love isn’t being reciprocated by her.

mike’s monologue to el in the s4 finale is riddled with cliches “i feel like my life started the day i found you in those woods”, untrue statements “i’ve never felt scared of you”, and overemphasis “i’ve loved you every day since. i love you on your good days. i love you on your bad days”. overemphasis of phrases is used a lot in persuasive techniques to convince people of things. (kinda like the “we’re friends. we’re friends.” in which mike was trying to convince himself.) within mike’s confession, he finally gives his reason for not being able to say ily to el. it’s this: “i’m scared one day you’ll realize you won’t need me anymore. i thought that if i said how i felt, it would somehow make that day hurt more”.

based on mike’s excuse, he knows that he loves el, he just can’t say it to her, but he still wants her to know it. he tries to make her feel loved more through his actions than his words. by this point, eleven also knows mike loves her, but she wants to hear it. mike is hyper aware that he’s dodging these words: “i’m sorry i don’t say it more” ummm you never do. mike is anticipating that eleven will eventually leave him and when it occurs, he’ll feel better knowing he didn’t tell her that he loved her. 🤔 but the thing is, the day she leaves him will already hurt mike bc he understands intrinsically, without speaking aloud, that he loves el. interesting.

it’s important that this issue doesn’t have at all to do with will specifically, it’s about mike himself and his internal battle with the way he feels about eleven. mike’s character during the past 2 seasons has been about obsessing over his girlfriend, unless there is something deeper there (internalized homophobia, repression, and hiding from truth).

there were many other ways for mike to explain why he was not able to vocalize ily to el, and here are a few

- the whole parents not loving each other reason. this explanation actually circulated around quite a bit on social media before volume 2 was released. this really could’ve been given some time had it been explored. however it wasn’t mentioned in the slightest.

- vulnerability: it can be hard to say the word “love” bc the person trying to say it can feel weak and exposed to the people that they’re admitting it to or even any people that happen to hear them say it. but mike does say that he loves her in front of many close family and friends in s3 so this argument has no support.

- ptsd and trauma: again, another super valid and realistic way that his inability to express his love verbally could’ve been shown. yet in mike’s case, he’s one of the characters on the show that is seemingly unaffected by his life events. as finn once said in an interview “deep down there’s some trauma, but that doesn’t come out”.

basically, mike doesn’t mean it, not in that way. which he doesn’t think is okay or acceptable. given the way he reacts so hurt to the bullies in s1 when they make fun of will by insinuating that he’s gay, i’m sure mike’s at least partially aware of what will was subjected to by lonnie. bc of the time period and what his best friend went through, he does not want that for himself. so he pushes it back, and tries to reverse his thinking, his actions, his feelings. and when the opportunity arises for him to be normal and get a girlfriend, he jumps at it.

but why doesn’t he just lie about it right away then? maybe cuz of what happens early in season 3. with the help of max, el establishes that lies in relationships are bad, mike eventually stops this and isn’t able to vocalize romantic love to el. but in s4 he learns through will that el lied to him while she was away and even on their first day back reunited, so maybe he takes that as being okay to also lie and do the same to her again. at least in a moment where it comes down to saving her life right ? 😃 also… anyone else curious if mike is gonna be able to say it to her in season 5 just normally now?

this season seemed to showcase that mike ultimately would’ve rather had el leave him than live his life even further in a lie by not meaning what he’s feeling and what he says to her. it was building up to this in episodes 1-5. the desert scene with will was really helping him come to this realization, and after all, in a week he’s flying back to hawkins for who knows how long and spending more time away from her. the only time he would put up with this big of a lie, worst case scenario, is if it were to possibly save her in life or death situation. voila monologue

How would you rank the seasons? With the second half of S3 being S4, I feel there’s a fine line between those two

Oh yeah there is definitely a line between the two half of Mobile Unit. Some people call the second half Season 3.5. I personally call it Season 4 because 1) there is a new main character (Osmeralda) and 2) it has its own separate story arc. So I will distinguish the Mobile Unit episodes as Season 3 and 4

Okay so there are two ways that I rank the seasons: 1) by episodes overall and 2) by season arc. Let me first rank them by episodes

Season 2: what I mean by ranking the episodes overall is that I am considering the quality of episodes as stand alone stories. And on that basis, I think season 2 had the best written episodes overall. By this point, the showrunners had a whole season under their belt and already established Odd Squad as a concept and organization. Thus, they not only knew how to write the episodes but also had the opportunity to explore more lore and try new things. Season 2 had a lot of fun and well written episodes, and I love almost all of them. In addition, this season had a lot of my favorite episodes of the whole show. And this is in part thanks to improved writing and filming styles. In addition, the dynamics between the characters are a lot of fun. The showrunners did a great job of making sure that the new agents are unique and different from the season 1 agents. Going into season 2, I was so sure that I was going to dislike the new agents but I fell in love with Olympia and Otis almost immediately. Honestly, it took me a while to really warm up to Oona (partially bc she was literally following Oscar's footsteps), but eventually I fell in love with her unique brand of craziness that is completely different from Oscar's zaniess. She is one of my favorite characters (though to be fair, I love the main 7 so so much haha)

Season 1: I've watched the show ever since it first aired (and technically before it even officially aired since the PBS Kids player released the first few episodes a few days early). And even though I loved the show from the start, upon rewatch I can definitely see that this was a new show that was still trying to find its bearing. This is especially evident in the early episodes where the episodes seem a bit slow for me. And there is a sharp contrast between the episodes from the beginning of the season vs the end. I think the writing and quality of the episodes definitely improved after Training Day. There are some episodes that I absolutely love from this season but most of the episodes are enjoyable or just okay for me. Don't get me wrong, I love season 1 (wouldn't be obsess with the show otherwise haha) but you can definitely see a learning curve as the season progress but when the show becomes great it really is GREAT

Season 4: I will be the first to admit that I didn't enjoy the Mobile Unit nearly as much as the Season 1 and 2 episodes and characters. While Season 1 and 2 are like a 10 for me, the Mobile Unit is like a 5. Maybe a 6. That being said, between Season 3 and 4, I think that Season 4 has better quality episodes overall. Maybe it's just because the episodes are more "fresh" in my mind but I think it helps a lot that 3 of the main characters already have been working together for a season so they have that established dynamic. In addition, there are more villain ensemble episodes that I can remember, and honestly those villain episodes are more fun than the other case episodes I think haha. In addition, it seems like that by season 4, the writers have gotten better writing this version of the show. Mobile Unit is definitely different from the main show of season 1 and 2. Mobile Unit already got rid of the cold open where the agents help a client who is not usually related to the main plot of the episode. In addition, Mobile Unit got rid of the main dynamic of two partners, one scientist, and Ms. O and exchange it for 4 agents and the Big O. And not really the Big O since she isn't really involved. So really just four agents. But the problem is that they don't really have distinct roles in the team. So while the other seasons can focus on the two main agents and sometimes bring in or focus on the scientist and Ms. O, the Mobile Unit episodes have to focus on all four agents and that is hard to juggle in just 11 minute episodes. So overall, I find the Mobile Unit seasons a lot weaker than season 1 and 2, but I find the season 4 episodes stronger overall than season 3 bc the writers have gotten used to writing for this new dynamic/style

Season 3: this is the season where they changed up the format of the show. As I already mentioned, they got rid of the cold open, have four main agents to focus on, and Oprah has a much smaller role in the show. So similar to season 1, they kinda of have a new start and are trying to figure out how to write for this changed show. But on top of that, they tried to introduce science topics into the show in addition to the math ones. And in my opinion, the science lessons weren't very well written and dragged the episodes. For me, those episodes weren't the best. I think that the showrunners realized that because there are no science episodes that I can think of in season 4. So basically, Mobile Unit is almost a new show and thus they are trying to figure out how to write for this new format, which really shows through the quality of the episodes

Okay that was a lot longer than I thought it would be haha (I ramble too much haha). And now to rank the story/mystery arcs. Which is going to be below the cut bc SPOILERS. Don't read if you haven't seen all 4 seasons. I am looking at you guys who I am trying to get to watch season 2- I don't want to have the mystery arc spoiled for you guys! So spoilers ahead!

Season 1: without a doubt the Odd Todd mystery arc is the best of the whole show. All the hints of him through the 43s and brief mentions all leading up to the grand reveal of Odd Todd in Training Day were perfect!! Training Day is a masterpiece within itself as we get to see the return of Todd and the reveal of Olive's past. And throughout the rest of the season (and honestly the show), Odd Todd proves to be a great character and villain. Seriously, no other main season villain ever lived up to Odd Todd. Joshua Kilimnik's portrayal of Odd Todd made him feel like an actual threat to Odd Squad while also have a very peculiar personality that was so fun to watch. And of course, connected with this mystery arc is Olive's and Otto's character arc though it is mainly Olive's. Olive was traumatized from the events with Todd and at first was closed off from Otto. However, she soon learned to trust him not only as a partner but as a friend. I will forever quote Otto from Disorder in the Court, "Olive, we're not just partners. We're friends. Nothing will ever change that." Also all of Trials and Tubulations cement their friendship but that is an essay for another day haha. And then of course all of this is paid off in O Is Not For Over, which is a great finale where Odd Todd is defeated and turns over a new leaf (haha) and Olive and Otto get to run their own Odd Squad. Now if we are going to get picky, I wish that the finale didn't kinda pull the rug under us and reveal that Otto didn't actually turn over the bad side. It would be interesting to see him tunr evil even for a short while. But that is just a minor thing. Basically all of the plot important episodes were very well written and executed and it all paid off in the finale

Season 2: this season's main question of "Who is agent Otis" was kinda a let down for me bc I basically called it from the beginning that Otis was a former villain associated with ducks. And honestly the actual reveal was a letdown for me bc I personally thought that my theory/idea for the season finale was better: Otis was raised by a family of evil ducks but he never wanted to be a villain. However, in the finale, the ducks come back and take Otis away, forcing him to help them carry out their evil scheme but he is reluctant and eventually with the help of the squad they defeated the ducks. But obviously that didn't happen. What really annoys me about the reveal is that everyone calls Otis a villain even though he never really was?? Like he was never evil, and we never see him doing evil crimes for the ducks. So that whole final trial (a poorer version of Disorder In the Court in my opinion) made no sense. Basically, I don't think that the Otis mystery paid off at all bc the hints were obvious (at least to me), and the reveal was very poorly executed at the end. Also the reveal happened at the end of the season. With Season 1, Odd Todd was revealed in the middle of the season, giving the show time to further explore his character in later episodes. If they did the Otis reveal in the middle of the season, then we could have gotten more time to see how that affects Otis and his dynamic with the rest of the squad and especially with Olympia. Instead by leaving the reveal until the very end, all the reactions and the reunion feel rushed and forced. BUT while thinking about ask this morning, I realized that there was a second connected arc that was better executed: the villain break-ins. We see the villains breaking in thoroughout the season, but I personally didn't think much about them. Then in the end, it is revealed that the villain break-ins is connected to the traitor. So good on the show for dropping these hints without me noticing them the first time around haha. However, what was horribly excecuted is the reveal that Ohlm was the traitor and main villain all along. I still think that Ohlm being the main villain was a last minute rewrite and if it wasn't then the show did a horrible job of building that up. Also Ohlm acting as a villain is pretty weak especially compared to Odd Todd. The X's should have been the main villains but I guess they were just red herrings. Basically, I think that the mystery arc of this season wasn't very written and not executed well but at least it had potential. Unlike Mobile Unit...

Season 3: okay in a sense the mystery arc was better established in this season than season 2. We get introduced to the Shadow at the beginning of the season, and we see her throughout the season. But once again I already figured out that she was Opal's sister, so that mystery arc was ruined for me LOL. Also her villain acting is not great (sorry guys you are nowhere near Odd Todd's level haha). Like all of the other main season villains, she wants to destroy Odd Squad but I found her reasoning for turning evil to be the weakest of all 3 of them. She decided to turn evil just because of her sister?? And on top of that, I found the finale was weak. She changes her tune way too fast in my opinion. At least with Ohlm, he still wanted to destroy Odd Squad despite being saved by the main four. Basically, I personally didn't like the story arc of this season and didn't think it paid off well. The Shadow being almost immediately forgiven does not feel deserved.

Season 4: what season arc was there??? something about the thing that Golden sundial?? It was mentioned in the first episode of the season and like never mentioned again until the end of the season. On top of that they never even established the main villain, Olando (I honestly forgot most of this season's arc and even this guy's name, I had to look it up lol), and he wasn't even really a villain in the first place! They had him go rogue for like an episode (turning for a really weak reason that I can't even remember now- he didn't want to work in a team??) and then try to repent like 15 minutes later. They could at least make him a full on villain like the past seasons' villains, and it would have made this season's story arc so much more interesting. And on top of that, they resolved the final conflict way too fast. There was no build up and they traveled back in time to talk to Ms. O and Oscar (please don't get me started on how horrible this scene was haha). And then when they defeated the problem (me using vague terms bc I barely remember what the actual problem was LOL), Orlando just walks off?? Without suffering any consequences?? This season's story arc (or really lack of one) was just BAD. And such a sad way to end the series. Oh and one more thing: yes Oswald let's name every single past main odd squad agent and then travel back in time to visit them (the way that line was written and executed annoys me so much ahhhh). Anyway, yes season 4 had the weakest story arc out of all of them Wow that was a lot. Thank you for reading all of that if you've made it this far. Okay in a truly unhinged fashion I have made my s4 Moominvalley pitch because I am obsessed gremlin with IDEAS

Comet in Moominland Arc

-Ep 1-5 are standard fare. Change from Autumn to Winter to spring. Always a hint of weird going ons, always a little background detail of the star w/a tail, but nothing in the foreground yet. (The charas notice, but they've got episode concerns to deal with.) Maybe like one episode dedicated to Little My trying to figure out what's up with Snork Maiden and Moomin, who haven't been as sappy lately, only to find out that the two are content in being just friends for now. (Still soul mates of course who love each other a lot, but not dating.) (Little My like SNUFF MAKE YOUR MOVE!! And Snuff like ??? What are you talking about??)

-Ep 6 transitions to Summer and we get some heavy rains. Not enough to flood, but enough to drive off Snuff. While Moomin + fam muse over storm, Muskrat starts philosophising on the nature of the star w/a tail. (Pappa mentions it's something one of his old friends would draw.) In the morning, the kids go down to the beach! (OH also, rains make Moomin remember when his family first arrived in Moominvalley. He and Sniff were scared, Mamma was desperately searching for Pappa, and their house had washed here from the flood. Also how Moomin First met Snuff by following the campfire trail to arrive at his site!)

-Ep 7 starts w/the world awash in ash. Everyone is freaking out that the world's lost its colour, but calms once the ash is revealed. It's weird, though. And Moomin decides someone ought to look into it. He writes a note for Snuff, who had yet to return, then gathers his crew (Sniff, Little My, + Snorkmaiden; Snork is busy examining the ash thing) and strikes out down the river to the observatory up in the Lonely Mountains. (Muskrat or Pappa mentions this.) They get into some peril, of course, but are rescued by a flute-player who calls himself the Joxter.

-Ep 8, Snuff returns only for Mamma to give him the note. He panics just a little, going straight after the crew. (Snork asks to join? Snuff lets him?) Cut back to Moomin and co. w/this new character. Moomin + Snork Maiden kinda getting Snufkin vibes off him, Little My disagrees whole-heartedly, Sniff just likes his carefree attitude. He notes that his forebodings told him of the danger the signs (star w/tail) brought with them + was looking for higher ground to escape it. Otherwise, he's been living in a fruit tree. (Sniff likes this.) The gang run into a Hemulin bug collector + Joxter pranks the man into releasing all his specimen (??), which is definitely a Snuff thing to do (Moomin decides, much against Snork Maiden + Sniff's opinions). Little My decides this Joxter's aight and the crew keep ascending them Mountains.

-Ep 9 starts w/the crew finding the den of garnets. Sniff is too entranced to walk away, so they all take a detour to look around. (Joxter laments the lack of use pretty gems have? Maybe? You can't eat 'em and they're too heavy to keep!) Right as they discover the lizard who's made this den its home, Snuff + Snork arrive for assistance! Everyone safely out of the den (though their supplies halved due to the backpack getting torn), introductions are made. Snuff doesn't really like Joxter, or that Moomin's grown fond of him (seemingly), but Joxter seems as nervous about Snuff.

-Ep 10, the crew have made it to the Observatory! Though none of the scientists are willing to give Moomin or Snork Maiden the time of day, they are willing to answer Snuff + Joxter's inquiry. That star, which has been growing more + more visible in the sky, is a comet. And it's hurtling straight for Moominvalley. Its impact is estimated for 4 days, 17 hrs, 23 mins, give or take 5 mins. The crew gotta sit with this knowledge a minute, terrified + upset, then Moomin breaks them out of it by saying they gotta warn the valley. They gotta get Mamma + Pappa to safety. Start the scramble down the mountain! In which they land in some peril by a flesh-eating plant! (Snork Maiden + Moomin both get caught, leading Snuff to work w/Joxter to free them. Snork also helps!)

-Ep 11, the world is growing noticeably redder. The water's drying up at a pretty steady and rapid rate. Meaning they can't get back home via that way. Before Snuff can chime in, Joxter professes to knowing a shortcut and leads them to the dried-up sea. Return of stilts! Moomin offers to carry Little My, which she refuses at first. (Snuff is trying not to freak out about this Joxter fellow.) They come across one particularly interesting shipwreck and look inside. Moomin + Snuff get caught by the octopus inside, unfortunately, trying to keep Sniff out of mischief again. This time, Snork Maiden + Little My to the rescue! Everyone glad to be safe, we continue on. (Little My offers to carry Moomin on her shoulders lol, but then accepts him carrying her.) We end at the shores of Moominvalley, just one day left until the comet strikes.

-Ep 12, pandemonium. The Valley folk are in hysterics over the red world of the comet. Moomin rushes home w/crew to find Mamma + Pappa. Unfortunately, tornado strikes at that time + the crew end up getting caught + saved by Mymble and the hot air balloon. Moomin laments that it's a terrible birthday gift, this comet, while Mymble and Joxter are more than shocked to see one another again. (Little My like is THIS my dad?? And both like nope!) Due to some tiff, Moomin ends up getting knocked overboard + plummeting to the forest below. Snuff + co are uhhh pretty upset by this! (Little My calls him bro oop) Thankfully, Moomin's okie, just a bit bunged up. But now he's even more despair and cries for his Mamma and Pappa. Who find him! Surprisingly! Mamma reassures him that even grown adults will need help from their parents from time to time and Pappa asks after the adventure, but no time for that. They've got a comet to take cover from.

-Ep 13, finale! Mymble and Joxter flew off together to escape comet. The rest of the crew comes to help Moomin family move their things to that cave on the beach. (Hang curtains on the outside and use the rest of Snuff's sun oil! Yeah.) Though a bit disorganised at first, they all come together as a team in the end! Although once everything's settled, sniff bolts out because he forgot something! And Moomin + Snuff chase after him. Now is Not the time,but Snuff ends up asking after Joxter any way. Moomin answers distractedly, more focused on finding Sniff, until he notices Snuff just being real upset + they have to pause for that talk. (Meanwhile, Mamma can't find Moomin's b-day cake. Looks like the Muskrat sat on it whoop.) Let Snuff be the jealous one for once is all I'm saying. Moomin reassures Snuff that they're best friends, that nothing could change the way he feel inside, then Snuff blurts out that he wants something more than just friendship. (Let Moomin show off his growth is all I'm asking pls.) Moomin approaches cautiously and Snuff is in panic 'oh shit I have to say this now' mode. Snuff admits tha the loves Moomin, he's always loved him, but it scares him. Such a big, selfish desire isn't right after all. It isn't freeing at all. Moomin steps in and bumps his snoot to Snuff's, saying that love doesn't have to be selfish. Take it from a Moomin who's had to learn the hard way! Sniff finds them (w/Toffle the plush bby) and the gang quickly head back to take shelter.

"It's frightening, of course. It might be something so big that you're sure it would change the whole world. And maybe it will. But if you keep your paw in mine and we weather this together, then it will pass. And though we are changed forevermore, we'll still have each other. From there, we'll just have to take things as they come, step by step."

-Comet descends, but only grazes the surface. Soon enough, daylight breaks into the morning and the sky is blue once more. Everyone piles out and sees the sea returning in big, choppy waves + celebration! Singing, dancing, and hollering gallore! Snuff + Moomin dance together, paw in paw, a sort of excited anticipation about them. They have survived, and they're going to make the most of it as they can.

(Listen,it either ends this way or w/Winter arriving + Snuff gifting his harmonica to Moomin before leaving on his travels. That shit SLAPPED the 90s anime knew what it was doing!!)

Dem’s Big Post About The Spn Fics Part 1/2

aka The Wrap Up to celebrate To Exist Again and To Become a Man now being finished!

(This will be a long post. This is your only warning.)

Admittedly this is a bit of a weird thing to be doing, but I wanted to try it out for 3 reasons:

I love talking about my own work and

It functions really well as a self-reflective tool for me to improve on, and

I can answer some big questions people might have because there was a LOT of worldbuilding in these stories.

We’ll start off with reflective stuff, and move into the juicier world-building focused stuff later into the post. There will be major spoilers for both fics to come!

To begin with a funny anecdote, Why Did I Write These Stories?

I was beginning to write and work out the story that I wanted to write for Spn (what will now be To Destroy a Man. As I was writing the scene, I realized I had a LOT of ideas and while I was trying to avoid as much exposition as I could, it became quickly apparent that I was needing to create my own au (this scene eventually became chapter 34 of To Become a Man). A short prequel seemed like a good idea, to quickly hash out the ‘prior’ events that I needed to go through so all the readers could be on the same page. While plotting out prequel points, I realized Sam and Dean were going to have drastically different experiences during the same time period, and I was trying to figure out who’s pov would be better for which scenes, and how to keep momentum when they’re going through such radically different types of changes. Ultimately I decided to split their povs, which I also thought would be a fun project! And I naively assumed each pov would take about 2 chapters each, rounding out to maybe 15k total.

I had my ending points: Dean n Cas soul-merged and (basically) married, Cas on the lam from heaven and a complete anomaly, and Sam juiced up full of powers and a weird mix of archangel and antichrist but still 100% human and ready to fight God.

Now I needed to add weight to these changes, so I wrote 200k of build-up.

Am I proud of these fics?

OF COURSE I AM!!! These are the longest fics I’ve ever written AND finished AND in the fastest freakin turnaround ever (both were finished writing, barring edits, in like 6 months holy shit)

I didn’t write a single scene that I “didn’t” want to write. If I had trouble writing it, as in it was fighting me, I scrapped it. Most obviously was the scene in Dean’s pov where he and Sam were intended to meet some other hunters and Dean declines working with them because he’s nervous about being outed as queer. It was meant to be a good scene! I wanted to introduce some new characters! But it just wasn’t working so I said ‘thank you, next!’.

But it means this story was an absolute joy to write. Because for a while all I was doing was ‘if I wanted to write one scene into supernatural, what would I write?’ and then just DID that!! It’s why there’s a lot of ‘Salmondean do dumb shit or have really dumb heartfelt conversations’ scenes.

Would I change anything?

If I’d been less eager to start sharing, I might have planned out the story beats a little tighter so there were less ‘soft’ chapters and a draw/pull for people to come back and keep reading. I felt Dean’s story specifically lagged at points and could have used some tighter editing (there was a noticeable lull in directed movement between Dean n Cas getting together, until Sam corrupts Amy).

I also probably would have held Sam’s story until I’d finished Dean’s so I could make the two line up better! Probably could have inserted more scenes into Sam’s fic that way, and made sure things were a little more consistent. In an ideal world one concept I had was to release 1 chapter from each pov every week that would correspond to the same time frame so we’d be getting real-time SalmonDean pov narrative. Unfortunately that didn’t work!

The biggest takeaway overall is for me to focus more on what moves the plot, and to make my scenes do more than 1 thing so I can cut down on wordcount and increase my efficiency.

Of course every writer will find things they want to fix in anything they’ve ever written, so these are minor “mistakes” at best. I’m so dang proud of these fics.

Onto more interesting things!

How Did I Put These Fics Together (because it’s different than anything I’ve ever done before)

Normally when I write a story, I plan out the beats I need to hit, see where I need to insert any kind of foreshadowing/buildup, and then write from A to B to C and so on and so forth. Hence, this is why I can normally post things as I complete chapters, because it’s all a linear progression.

For these two stories, rather than linear plot/a normal story structure, I just sat and free-wrote any and every scene that came to mind and then pieced them into a kinda-linear form like putting a quilt together. You’ll note that this is why there’s not a lot of internal callback or a feeling of sense of time flowing within the fic (save for points where I went back and specifically edited it in). How long does the story take place over? Hard to say! Your author has the barest grasp on linear time even on a good day (how many times did I say ‘see you on [wrong day]’ at the end of chapters lmaaoooo)

This also meant EXTENSIVE editing on the back end once I decided in what order I wanted my ‘quilt pieces’ to be. Hard to say if this is a bonus or a negative!

But I did want to try and capture the vibe of the lives they lead, as a bit of a ‘slice of life’-style story, when the slice of life is the profound weirdness of the Winchester roaming life, and how things are status quo- until everyone almost dies oh shit!! And then they have to keep living because no therapy we die/undie like Winchesters. Do I think I captured this effectively? Hmm. Good question.

Dem where the FUCK did the inspiration for a lot of the magic and creature weirdness even come from?

Honestly? Music, primarily. And completely mishearing lyrics!

Nightwish ‘Ever Dream’: the line is ‘my song can but borrow you grace’ and because my brain is scrambled eggs on a good day, I heard ‘grace’ ‘song’ and ‘borrow’ in that order and have had, for YEARS, the mental image of Cas borrowing Dean’s soul to power himself up for battle.

From there I’ve always been enamored with the ‘wavelength of celestial intent’ descriptor that Cas drops in s6 for “what he is”.

I also really like ocean metaphors mostly because I’ve been obsessed with the ocean and things in it since I was like… 5??? So really this was me just rolling with what I know lmao. I love using (somewhat) accurate scientific metaphors for very intangible things!

I was also finishing my degree in biology/ecology while writing these fics and I think it shows

Stars ‘The Night Starts Here’ gives us the series title and the fic titles. Except for ‘To Exist Again’. TEA was almost titled ‘The Upwards Fall’ because I wanted all 3 of the Main Stories to have titles from this song, but I couldn’t make anything else work in tandem with the series name ‘The Love It Takes’ while also working for Sam’s personal story. So Sam, as always, is the rebel <3

Stars ‘Up In Our Bedroom, After The War’ is basically the vibes of the whole story. TFW has been, literally, to hell and back!!! There’s a bit of melancholy and sadness, a lingering dark, but the chance of a bright new tomorrow and a soft start.

Let’s Talk About Themes in The Story! What were you looking to accomplish?

My earliest notes for TFW are, as follows:

Dean’s journey of self-discovery (who am I when I’m not trying to be Dad?)

Dean wants to settle down! He wants a big family! He wants to be domestic!

Basically: Dean doesn’t want to have a short life of hunting. He wants to live!

Dean’s journey of realizing he’s bi, and him accepting that

Dean’s relationship to Sam is both older brother/parent

And continuing Dean balancing these roles while also letting Sam be an adult

Dean’s Big Issues/Fears about never being good enough for people to want to stay with him (these are effectively highlighted in that Cas thinks he’s not useful enough to be wanted)

Sub Plot:

Castiel’s autonomy

Cas’ fall from grace, to trying to restore Heaven, to wrecking it further

He’s majorly depressed by the end of s7 (before purgatory)

Wants to stay in Purgatory but doesn’t tell Dean

Remains depressed after leaving, but resolved to keep living on because he’s clearly meant for something

After the seraphim reveal: does he have free will?! How does he grapple with this? How does he live in a way he can be proud of?

And lastly

Sam gets his powers back CAUSE THATS HOT

where tf did they go????

he got them from Lucifer?????

sleeper agent??????

Sam is The Chosen One

Accepts that he is More Than Human and to celebrate all parts of him

Lucifer and Sam friends?? Work together????

Sam needs autonomy in his choices/his life

If you compare these to the overall arc of TFW within the two stories, I think I got a lot of them! But you’ll also note a lot of these things aren’t concrete goals that are easily measurable (ex: Dean wants to learn to bake pie. In chapter 1 he starts a fire in the kitchen. By the end of the story he finally makes A Good Pie.) part of the lack of concrete milestones was why I felt it was important to tell Dean (and Cas’) story by going back to the point they meet, in s4! Dean’s gradual change towards his feelings for Cas, his relationship to Sam (heavily influenced by the s7 events of this fic) and then his own relationship with himself were such slow burns that I felt it would be a disservice to try and cram a change like that into a timeline like “1 year”.

I felt like these subtle changes and adjustments actually felt a lot truer to life-- people often change in very small, gradual ways over time, even without realizing it and often times not consistently! If only we could all gain skills like the sims, where we can easily level up and remain at that high level of performance!

So the Guy Who Ate Satan, A Celestial Nuke that Developed Sentience, and Dean walk into a bar…

Sam’s story in Spn The Show has always been a ‘chosen one’ kind of narrative. Sam is living with one foot in the realm of the monsters, and I wanted to bring that back full force! It really makes sense for him that he should only continue to grow in power, might, and magic!! As the story progresses.

Cas also got a power up! I do desperately love in the show that he was kind of a grunt/nothing angel, and so even when he defected to TFW he was a huge help for them, but in the scale of things he was an annoying fly to most other angels. It really worked for the underdog story of s4/5. In this I wanted to give him a power up, and originally it was actually going to be close contact with Sam that eventually changed Cas into something unknown (you can still see traces of this in ch34 of TBAM, where Death remarks ‘Castiel could be [Sam’s] first creation’. But for a combo of reasons: how Sam’s magic needed to have intent, the entire concept of free will and consent, and how much I wanted Dean and Cas to have their effect on each other, I decided to go with the route that Cas has actually always been something angel-adjacent rather than becoming something new. TFW/Supernatural has always been about free will and making your own story, so I amplified that with Cas.

Dean has always been A Normal Guy, which is part of the appeal of him and Sam (2 normal dudes!) taking on the Very Not Normal. As explained above, Sam’s story is ‘normal guy finds out he’s the chosen one’ and so, in a story about very large concepts and huge monsters and acts of magic, I felt it was very important to keep Dean as normal as possible. To the point it became a running gag to me, personally, in that ‘no matter what cool shit happens around him, Dean has to stay as Just A Guy’. And it’s a very humanizing role that allows the story to have the scale it does!

What were the most important themes in your story?

Sam’s Autonomy

I wasn’t even going to include the plot about Lucifer’s death in this story— that was going to come up in a later story, actually! And rather than Sam having ate Lucifer, the original idea was that they’d become a SamandLucifer entity (this harkens back to a concept I wanted to write when Swan Song first aired).

That storyline would have involved a lot of mental ‘Sam and Lucifer discuss what it means to live, which one of them is more worthy of life and if they do deserve to destroy the world for the pain they’ve been forced to go through, just to create the dichotomy of good and evil for everyone else’ discussions. There would be a lot of talk about how Sam hates and fears Lucifer for the pain Lucifer put on Sam, how Lucifer hates Sam because he and Sam are the same but Sam’s brother loves him anyways, etc.

Ultimately that was scrapped because Sam’s entire story in the show is always about how the world and everyone around him manipulates him and that he never actually gets to make choices about his own life or body that aren’t influenced or part of someone elses’ design. And that always bothered me that Sam was never allowed to be himself without having to be ashamed of it, and I wanted to make sure that Sam’s triumph of being proud of himself/proudly choosing to exist (again) was evident in his story

In the end I needed Sam to have this visceral win over his tormentor. As the story shows, in this case Lucifer was abused and put into a position where he was incapable of empathy and could only express himself in violence. Sam even understands this! But it doesn’t change the fact that Lucifer tortured Sam in unimaginable ways for thousands of years.

With that in mind I didn’t like the idea of Lucifer and Sam having “co-ownership” of their new identity, so I made the choice that Sam had to be the survivor. This tied in well with Sam’s new crusade to restore free will to the universe, because he’s breaking the narrative of his own story!

While Castiel wasn’t a pov character, his own autonomy and free will was equally as important. You’ll note that many, many paragraphs and conversations revolved around that theme and that in the end Cas followed himself (and love!) which ensured his freedom of self <3

The Brothers are WEIRD PEOPLE!!!! And Codependent to a Worrying Degree, but It’s Also How They Survive

It’s very hard to show “unusual” relationships when you’re writing from the pov of the two people who don’t think there’s anything weird about their relationship. Sure, they say ‘yeah it’s probably weird that we still share a bed’ but that’s kinda more in line with ‘I had a nightmare and I want to be close to the person who makes me feel safe’. Hashtag normalize co-sleeping when you need it!!!

From there I did try to point out how the boys have a weird perception of lifestyle in the little things they did.

From thrifting everything from clothes to appliances to books (thrifting is a valid lifestyle! It’s incredibly handy when you’re on a budget.)

To never actually having condiments or knowing how to use a dishwasher cause they’ve lived in a car, a motel room, or squatted in old houses their whole life.

I tried to have them wear each others’ clothes or casually swap things as much as possible. They live out of each others’ pockets!

Also the brothers are just weird people!! It’s hard to show from their pov, cause they don’t know how far off from normal they are, but like…

Everything about Sam and Amelia was NOT right like holy shit those two were wilding in their grief. They are very lucky things worked out for them and that they got to be hashtag Weird Girls together

Dean explicitly, in the story, gets horny after killing stuff!! Violence has done a number on his psyche and he’s gotten some wires crossed that maybe shouldn’t have been, or maybe could be worked out in a safe space but… uh… how likely do we think Dean is gonna go find a safe space to deal with any of his shit???

LOVE!!! Love is truly what this whole story is all about

If you’ve read the stories, you know how much emphasis I put on love. Love is the strongest force in the Spn Universe! It’s what averted the apocalypse and saved the world (Swan Song), it’s what created free will (Cas’ entire arc!) I love love!!!!

I went out of my way to not put any definitions on platonic love vs romantic love because I think love is love is love and how you express that is the difference. Neither is more powerful than the other because LOVE is powerful!! Sam and Cas are the most important people in Dean’s life and he loves them equally! He shows this by giving Cas kisses and stealing Sam’s socks.

It’s a personal pet peeve of mine when I have to hear explanations like ‘I love you, like a brother’ or ‘I love you, but like, as a friend because I’m a lesbian and you’re a man’ etc etc in media. If you have to continuously define how your characters love each other, then I don’t think you’re doing a good job of portraying their relationship. So you’ll see that I never put those parameters in any conversation. Dean DOES muse that he loves Cas differently than he loves Sam or Bobby, specifically because there is a romantic and sexual tone that his feelings for Cas takes, but not because he loves Cas more or less than he loves Sam or Bobby.

Which means, if you haven’t realized it yet, the Series + Fic Titles are meant to be a complete sentence because the power of love IS the thesis of this series:

What’s Something People Probably Don’t Know?

The demonic fungal/hydrothermal vent growth on Sam’s arm was thrown in literally as I was posting the chapter because I had just finished a 48 hour cram session of writing a report on tube worms for an ecology class (I was chanting my tube worm song as I wrote it) and it ended up being a HUGE hit with both readers and myself. But it was so last minute I had trouble fitting it in more throughout the rest of Sam’s story!

Cas’ orders? That may or may not have bound him to Dean and removed his free will? Were written into Sam’s story and I went ‘oh SHIT that’s compelling’ and then left them there as a ‘guess I’ll figure that out when I get to Dean’s story lol’

Originally Dean and Cas were supposed to get together after having their souls bonded, and have been in a UST limbo the entire time before that. Mostly because I think the entire concept of ‘we just got married of the soul I guess we should try dating?’ is very funny. CLEARLY the two of them were way more eager to fall in love than I anticipated (thank you Cas for your honesty) but you can still see shades of this original idea here and there (especially in ch35 of TBAM)

I never intended Dean and Benny to connect so well!! Benny was going to reunite with Andrea, she was going to live, and they were going to go off into the world and leave the story. And, uh, here we are. I’m still debating if I need to adjust the relationship tag or not haha. Polyamory is fun, especially when I was planning for Sam to be the polyamorous brother...

Speaking of, I can’t believe I forgot about Sam and his sexuality! If I rewrote TEA I would have had Sam contemplate more on his lack of sexual appetite due to trauma, up until he meets Benny and he gets to rediscover how he wants to be a sexual person

Many of Sam and Dean’s absolutely stupid sibling conversations were lifted near-verbatim from conversations I’ve had with my siblings

And lastly...

Dem where’s Kevin????????????? Where is our sweet baby boy????????

He’s SAFE!! He’s in the Hunter pipeline somewhere cause Sam handed him off to Bobby’s people. He and his mom are safe and at some point they probably got rib sigils like SalmonDean did against angels, but for demons. I didn’t have room in this story for him!!! But my baby boy is SAFE and I want to get him back to university because it’s WHAT HE DESERVES!!!!

To that point: god there were/are SO many characters that I just didn’t include in the story so far because I didn’t feel comfortable including them without stalling the story for them. To that point: pretty much everyone who is alive/dead in s8 is that way in this story, except Bobby who gets to live.

Can The Flash writers let their characters actually process stuff in a fruitful way???

Is nobody else lowkey upset that instead of writing full arcs for Barry to overcome his trauma and grow from it, they instead have some Flash event wipe them away? S2 Barry’s journey into the Speed Force that helped him come to term with his mom’s death (I don’t mind this one it was well done, but it’s still an example of them using Speed Force to work through Barry’s issues.) S3 Flashpoint erased his pain of having just lost his dad, so we didn’t get to see him work through it and then S4 Speed Prison that left him feeling “reborn”, so he didn’t have to deal with the emotional fallout of how stressful S3 truly was for him. At least in S2 we got to see him process his emotions on screen. S3 & S4 didn’t even give us that, and don’t even get me started on S5 & onward.

Since S5 the writers haven’t even given him a magical speed induced reset to help him through his trauma, they’re just making him plow through tragedy after tragedy without rest and it shows. He’s way more erratic, easily set off, obsessive, and he’s always had these traits, but in my opinion it’s so unhealthy now. Barry Allen is a highly emotive individual and thus his good traits come out of that like his ability to love deeply, but bad ones come just as easily too. These more negative traits of his are exacerbated by the fact that he has unresolved issues that need to be addressed. If they would let him air out his fears, pinpoint the source and origin of them, as well as overcome them we would see a Barry Allen much more similar to how he was at the beginning of S4, but with a more mature edge to him now that he’s in his early 30s.

One arc. All we need is one arc to revamp his character and the rest of the arcs can focus on him becoming a truly independent hero and tackling work, fatherhood, and his hero duties.

Barry Allen deserves better writing.

(Also notice that Barry Allen has gotten at least 2 emotional resets to help deal with his trauma and Iris has gotten none. Zero. Zilch.

Let me explain to you what Iris West-Allen has been through in this show.

She watched her best friends that she’s known since the age of 8 heart stop multiple times as he was in a nine month coma.

The guy she was dating and was unsure about because she also had feelings for Barry shot himself and she held him while he died.

She found out that the mother she thought died when she was too young to remember isn’t dead but was actually addicted to drugs and walked out on her and her dad while pregnant with the younger brother she never knew she had.

Her mother soon after this reveal actually dies.

Iris finally accepts that she loved Barry all along, but now she is destined to die in a couple months so she emotionally prepares for her death (off screen) and ends up surviving only because somebody else died in her place even though she tried to stop them when they suggested it.

After surviving that mess she hoped for a future with Barry now that they were engaged, but then Barry goes into the Speed Force leaving her to mourn him for 6 months.

Barry’s not dead! They have a wedding but it was invaded by Alternate Earth Nazis and she subsequently had to watch one of her friends (Kara) heart almost be removed while Barry was stuck on said alternate Nazi-earth.

Amidst that whole mess Barry and Iris still managed to get married but then Barry’s sentenced to life in prison for a crime he didn’t commit with very little way to prove his innocence, thankfully Barry is released a month later (Still doesn’t make sense to me how they managed to pull it off, but oh well.).

Iris who grew up without a mother and has always wanted to be one has her and Barry’s future daughter show up from a timeline where Barry disappears. Their daughter resents Iris for dampening her powers a decision present day Iris couldn’t even fathom making, thus leaving Iris distraught.

To Iris’s great joy she makes up with their daughter only for her to die in Iris and Barry’s arms.

Barry her husband of almost 2 years and best friend of 20+ years who is destined to disappear in 2024 now is set to disappear in 2019 and in this timeline not only are they saying he dies instead of disappears, but also won’t even have a kid that she’d be able to cherish after he’s gone. She’ll never see their daughter that died ever again.

Luckily Barry survives the Crisis. Iris still has a chance to have Nora someday and now wants to build her media empire, but she gets trapped in a mirror dimension and experiences psychological torment in the form of neural dissonance that should’ve left her with severe brain damage (but amazingly enough it didn’t. I don’t understand how, but it didn’t).

Barry got her out of the mirror, but she hasn’t been able to advance her newspaper because stuff with the forces, her trouble adjusting to the real world again and 2 of her friends moving out of town one of whom is her employee, with one days notice.

Now in present time she’s potentially pregnant and experiences migraines due to phasing through timelines with Deon (The Still force) protecting her because if he doesn’t she could be fragmented through time.

Add to this all the times that I didn’t mention in which either she has almost died, has had to watch Barry almost die, or has actually thought that Barry was dead.

And she has barely been able to process any of this on screen and when they try to let her, they give her one scene about it and move on! Barry deserves better, but so does Iris because that list is LONG and she didn’t get any emotional resets to help her through any of it.)

Just write real arcs that allow your characters to confront things within themselves and their environments throughout an overarching storyline and have the progress they make actually stick and if it doesn’t explain why and expand on that in the next arc, is that too much to ask?

“Uh – Diane?”

Lucca looked over at you. “What did you find?” Lucca asked, walking over. She snatched the paper from you.

“Holy shit – this is an internal memo showing that our client knew about engineering defects.”

“We’re on the wrong side of this.” You sighed. Diane came over and put on her glasses.

“Is this what I think this is? Brian!”

Brian came over. Diane shoved the memo at him. “I never saw this thing in my life.” Brian snapped.

You arched your brow. “Sure looks like you did. That is your signature on the receiving end. And statute of limitations doesn't apply to fraudulent concealment.”

“I didn't conceal jack shit.”

“Then who signed it? Hmmm?” You shot back, rolling your eyes. “This looks so fucking bad.”

“I don’t care how it looks!” Brian snarled. “It’s bullshit.”

“Then tell me what’s exactly bullshit here because I'm looking at a document that undermines our entire defense. An anonymous memo with names and dates blacked out. It's damning, and it implicates you – this firm - in a cover-up.”

Brian stared at you, his eyes furious. “I don't know what crawled up your ass today, but I take care of my business!”

You were taken aback. “Don’t bite my ass since I happened to find it. It’s not my fucking fault.”

“Enough you two.” Diane snapped. “What are we going to do about it?”

The next morning you returned to the office bright and early. Marissa slid into the empty space on the elevator next to you. “I have it on good authority that there are roses on your desk. And a card.” She reached into her top and whipped out a small white card that had your name scribbled on it. You recognized Brian’s handwriting.

You carefully opened it and took out the small card: Let’s meet.

That night Brian bounded down the steps to the main floor. He went to drop off a file at reception when he noticed a dozen red roses on the end of the receptionist’s desk.

“Where did those flowers come from?” Brian asked, his eyes narrowing.

“Oh! Y/N gave them to me. She said she was allergic. Such a shame – they’re gorgeous flowers.”

Brian felt his blood pressure go through the roof. He bid the receptionist well and made his way to the elevator. By the time he made it to the main lobby, he was seething. He reached into his jacket’s breast pocket to call you, when he realized he left his phone in his office. With a groan, he pivoted and returned to the elevator bank.

After a minute, the elevator dinged, signaling its arrival. It was Brian’s turn to come face to face with you.

“Y/N.”

You looked up at Brian. ‘Fuck.’ You stood straight and stuck your chin out. “Have a good night.” You went to move past him and he grabbed your wrist.

“Like hell – you’re coming back upstairs with me. We need to talk.”

You yanked your wrist from his grasp. “No. You have made it quite perfectly clear that we are nothing.”

Brian grabbed your wrist again and pulled you flush against him. It was clear you were angry. Your skin was flushed and your jaw was clenched. You licked your lips subconsciously. ‘Fuck it all.’ Brian thought as he crushed his lips against yours, kissing you roughly. His lips mashed against yours, teeth clashing. The kiss was intense, with one of his hands on your ass, the other wrapped in your hair. His beard scratched against your skin and immediately you felt your panties dampen.

Your mouths parted and you both stared at each other. You both breathed heavily. And without hesitation, you slapped him across the face.

Your eyes widened at the realization and horror of what you had done. You took off, your heels clacking against the floor, the sound echoing throughout the lobby. Brian rubbed his reddened cheek, his skin stinging at where you slapped him.

“I deserved that.”
