Susie Wolff as The Empress Tarot:
The Empress is a mother, a creator, and nurturer. She can represent the creation of life, romance, art, or business. The Empress can represent the germination of an idea before it is ready to be fully born, and the need to be receptive to change. The Empress is representative of the productivity of the subconscious, seeded by ideas.

The Empress: represents motherhood, support, and nurturing; inverted, represents negligence.
Acrylic paint on watercolor paper
Wake with baby Gideon as The Empress because of it's emphasis on motherhood. To be frank, this series does not have an abundance of good mothers, and I think the way that Wake fulfills the typically maternal Virgin Mary role while still not being maternal in the slightest is more interesting.

🌻✨The Lady of the Towers✨🌻
Tumblr media
The Lady Alusys Prulove of the Towers portraied as the Empress Tarot. For my dear friend @vesprynna as a supporter gift on ko-fi ❤️
The empress is a strong, feminine and motherly figure. A kind and wise ruler who have traveled, studied and learned, who readily offer her advice to guide others. Her symbol of power is the lyre, representing her connection to magic and culture. She is crowned by 12 stars, connecting her to the cosmos and the greater wisdom of the gods. Surrounding her is Peonies and Sunflowers, who symbolize prosperity, good fortune, wealth, happiness and unwavering faith.
This was such a joy to work on. I am always delighted to draw Alusys so when Vespy asked me to draw her I was delighted 🥰 Thank you so much for the support!

3. The Empress
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: The Divine Feminine deck by Cocorrina Right: Rider-Waite deck
Element: Earth
Planet: Venus
Numerology: 3 represents creative harmony
Keywords: create, nurture, abundance, nature, comfort, sensual
Pop culture: Donna (Parks and Rec), Arwen (LOTR), Rose Quartz (Steven Universe), Te Fiti (Moana), Nina (Six of Crows)
Symbols: The crown with 12 stars represents the 12 natural cycles of the earth. Pomegranates on their dress symbolize fertility. The heart pillow with Venus' symbol is love, creativity, and beauty. The forest and stream represent connection with nature. Their posture and throne of cushions and blankets represent comfort and abundance.
Quotes: "We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to creat something that will." Chuck Palahniuk; "Life in abundance comes only through great love." Elbert Hubbard
I love this card. I feel a deep connection to this one and I loved studying it. When I saw the version from Cocorrina I was absolutely in love (I have a thing for long flowing hair in artwork). The effortless confidence that is in this card is beautiful. It is all about embracing your femininity, creativity, and sensuality. Even the number 3 is so sensual and feminine with its curves. And the roman numeral can be made into a downward triangle, a symbol of the earth and divine feminine. I think about the tiny, fruit gems overflowing out of a pomegranate, exploding with juice and life and nutrition. I think of feeling life-giving soil between my fingers, smelling flowers in the air, and the sun warming my skin. This card tells me to love, relax, and create.
As part of my study, I use the Tarot Card Meanings Workbook by Brigit Esselmont, biddytarotcard.com, brainyquotes.com (I use the card’s keywords to search for quotes that speak to me), Pinterest to look at other artistic interpretations, and Between the Worlds podcast.

"ideas live forever."
🪆☕️✨
the Empress represents creativity, the divine feminine, maternal feelings and fertility in all its forms; harmony and comfort reign in her world. personally speaking I think I just got over-emotional seeing Rhea Perlman again because I used to watch Cheers as a child (then later as a comfort show like a decade ago in the brief window before they took it away from brit netflix, but anyway) she was perfect in this role.

Charlotte's Art History Tarot - Card 3 - The Empress
Tumblr media
Art: Cleopatra – John William Waterhouse
pull this card
to be totally honest, I don't love the traditional associations of the empress card. it has always seemed to me to be very tied up with ideals about feminine maternity and seems to promote the whole "woman as nurturer and caretaker" thing. of course, you don't have to read this into the card - the great thing about tarot is how personal it can be! I've also seen interpretations that cast the empress card as nurturing things like ideas and new projects, but the focus often seems to be on pregnancy and maternal nurturing of new life. if that's a meaning that resonates with you, that's great! for me, it's just something that I'm not really interested in and it just makes me feel a little weird lmao. anyway, my feeling of dissonance with the empress is why I chose Cleopatra for the art piece, since - to me at least - she felt like an unexpected choice. there are a ton of maternal figures both real and fictional who are frequently depicted in art who would have conformed better to the more traditional understandings of the empress' meaning, but Cleopatra is not often cast in a very nurturing or maternal light. her story is often told through the lens of her romantic relationships and her death. however, she was also a ruler who nurtured the lands and peoples in her charge. during her reign, scholars flocked to the Library of Alexandria, she enacted relief efforts during a famine, and she revitalized the city of Alexandria while also embarking on ambitious architectural projects. (now this is not to say that she was a perfect ruler - she absolutely was not - but I did want to bring out this aspect of her story a little more). this image of Cleopatra depicts a determined, serious ruler, enthroned and adorned with gold. I chose this painting because it echoes some of the imagery of the classic empress card, but also highlights that element of using administrative power and political savvy to nurture whole cities and populations. I think it adds nuance and complexity to the more traditional empress card and allows for a more expansive understanding of the meaning of the empress.
