back in undergrad, i was invited to do a senior thesis. i wanted to do mine on language and gender because my (problematique fave) professor whose class got me into the field at the start just... wouldn't use my pronouns. she's very bad at using pronouns and frankly i think she does not understand limits. a philosophy of language class does not mean you get to just say ~whatever.~

basically, this project was borne out of "hey! use my fucking pronouns :))" i had (have) pretty severe "i can fix her" disease :// i....... was not a really great student in undergrad. people who have followed me since then can probably attest to that through my personal ramblings. my advisor (a different professor) was disappointed in me like the whole way through and i live in constant fear that she will find this blog and go "oh! thats why you didnt pay attention in class, dumbass :)" (though maybe she would see this post and say "oh.... growth :)" who's to say)

but see, though i struggled to get myself to stay engaged in my advisor's class, both she and that problematique fave had assigned texts that would lend themselves beautifully to my dream project - even though i just..... had a terrible habit of misunderstanding readings to basically an absolute inverse degree. like it's a chronic issue. maybe i should have figured out "this is what im understanding so the opposite is probably more correct." i'm working on it, though, and i'm better at getting it the second time around now that im in grad school. ^^;;

SO this brings me back to my thesis: basically, why does language matter? one of my chapters was about representation. i talked about janet in the good place reminding people every day, "not a girl." i talked about haruhi fujioka from ouran high school host club, "i don't care if people see me as a guy or a girl. it's what's on the inside that's important." i talked about stevonnie from steven universe, being the first fusion to be addressed with they/them pronouns. i talked about jesse and james from pokemon and their frequent "gender swapped" costumes. and, at last, i talked about sailor uranus - tenou haruka - using both masculine and feminine self-referential language and presentation.

the thesis statement of my tragically mediocre thesis paper is basically "when you have access to language, you can better describe your experience and understand the experiences of others." you can come to a stronger self-understanding, form connections with others who share some traits, discover community, come into support, enact change, and so on.

the paper im writing "writing" right now for my epistemology class is pretty much an elevated version of that, though i'm focusing less on gender identity and discussing like.... more like the "concept of identity" itself. one of my first grad classes was hermeneutics - the study of meaning, where it comes from and where it leads - and there is so much ~delicious~ overlap between the texts for that class, those from the undergrad class on language, the undergrad class on gender and intersectionality, and my current class. my current paper is on "epistemic injustice;" that is, lack of access to language (whether deliberately or unconsciously through systems that no single individual person had set up) puts people at disadvantage for the huge sector of life that they otherwise could understand.

ALL THIS to say, i was a snarky asshole in undergrad but i have very real investment in media representation. if i had watched she-ra before i presented my paper, i would have included double trouble (my beloved), and i have yet to watch owl house but i see there's another they/them? we love they/thems <33 i am always thinking back on when korrasami became canon, how that was a huge moment of positive bisexual representation. i think about sophia in orange is the new black, introducing to a more adult audience different layers and kinds of violences that she and other trans women, especially she as a black trans woman, are uniquely at risk for.

my graduate school thesis is going to diverge a bit from the language of justice and of personal and group understanding to an even broader scale, though i am going to have a lengthy chapter on the matter. (literally like one hour ago i emailed my county representatives to say "hey, the training material for my substitute teaching agency Fucking Sucks, how can i help bring appropriate language and subsequent recognition of mentally ill, neurodivergent, and disabled folks to the stage?")

the many forms of the philosophy of language is what sparked my passion for the field, and i want to give language to those who may have difficulty understanding texts like i do. i want to take all that i am learning and share it as best i can with others, or at the very least, use it to aid my interactions with others. that's why i have this stupid tongue-in-cheek blog in the first place! academic shitposts and some current social and political events are so important to share.

i do have a side blog for fandom shit since i wasnt smart enough to make that the main and this the side, so fan artists see @/daddy-socrates liking their posts and i am So Sorry About That but like... i don't want to take everything in life so, so, gravely seriously. OBVIOUSLY there are subjects and scenarios that are not to be joked about, but i think we get so bogged down in the severity of all the global problems that we forget to play around a bit. purposely putting a handful of anime characters into my undergrad thesis was my way of being both playful and highlighting how fun is a critical social learning tool. it may well have been the only really solid thing about that project, honestly. i hope that in the future i can revamp it, using what i have now.

Not that anyone asked, but I’ve been seeing makeup discourse going around lately and I kind of wanted to share my experience and relationship with makeup and how it has colored my relationship with my gender identity and presentation.

When I was a kid, I did a lot of theater, so I was introduced to makeup early, but it was expected from everyone. That said, it was very clear that most of the boys were expected to do the bare minimum of stage makeup, and the girls were expected to do a “beauty” look, given that most of the shows being done were quite old and gender-specific. Honestly, I never quite liked it, but I was solidly in my tomboy “all girly things are inherently bad” phase, proudly hating pink and gladly avoiding the romantic leads because I just wasn’t like other girls (oh, yeah, I was that middle schooler). I always wanted to play boy roles because I thought they fit me far better.

I didn’t know what a trans person was until I was about 12, and saw Chaz Bono on tv. I asked some questions and my parents were always willing to answer, which I count myself very lucky for. But it was the first I had heard that anyone could be a different gender than the one assigned at birth, and the first I’d heard of medical transitions.

A few years later, I recall breaking down in tears because I could never play my favorite characters, and I told my dad that I wanted to be a boy. My dad told me that it was a very superficial reason to change your body and I don’t think either of us realized the red flag that was for my future gender experimentation.

When I was 14, I came out as bisexual. I also started wearing makeup a little more, albeit in a very “emo-phase” way, black eyeliner like a raccoon to match my black beanie, side bangs and fingerless gloves. I was introduced to it by a cast mate in a show and I loved how my eyes looked. The more I experimented with makeup, the more I fell into a more feminine role, as that’s the way I thought it should be. If I’m the kind of girl who wakes up early to do makeup, I should also be doing my hair and dressing feminine and cute. But it was always a role.

When I was sixteen, I started dating a boy. I leaned into wearing dresses and lipstick, I leaned into a perfect girlfriend persona, I became what everyone wanted me to be. I thought I was happy. Until I spent time with myself. Until I spoke with my dad. Until I realized I didn’t love my boyfriend.

When I was eighteen, I came out as a lesbian. I became very vocal about it, but oddly, I found myself still in my dresses and flowy tops, long tresses and skirts. I even doubted that other people would know I was gay. I remember having a conversation with a close friend and she told me “no, you’re a classic femme. Don’t worry about it.” So I said “oh, that must be what I am.” And I became that. But I was still playing to other people’s perceptions. I started to become more concerned with “natural makeup,” not being too flashy but still gorgeous. Leaning into classic makeup and dress because this is what I was supposed to be.

When I was twenty, I met this boy in college. We became close friends, and eventually ended up sleeping together a couple times. My attraction to him put me in a state of crisis. I didn’t think I liked guys, but here I was. Did I only say lesbian because I thought it would make the breakup easier?

By this point I had started getting a lot more adventurous and experimental with makeup. I considered it an art form for myself. I wasn’t wearing it for society, or because I thought I needed it. In fact, I went to class quite often bare-faced and thought nothing of it.

I ended up thinking a lot about my gender and sexuality, as I felt less and less comfortable with being called a woman or a girl and more and more leaning towards masculine looks, and quietly stopped calling myself a lesbian, and defaulting to gay. But I always did my makeup the way I wanted to.

Then COVID hit.

Spending this much time with myself made me reevaluate everything. I began to feel as uncomfortable as I was before but now I was able to identify it as dysphoria. I worried that makeup was what made me feel this way, but after a few weeks of bare face, it occurred to me it was not my issue. It was my long hair, my feminine clothes.

I am twenty-one, and I came out as a non-binary person just last month. I have cut my hair and I am in the process of revamping my wardrobe to make me feel more comfortable. I love makeup as much as I did before, but I feel more free about it, despite feeling like I have to remind people that makeup isn’t inherently feminine. I definitely understand that women have been forced into these roles, being expected to wear makeup. As someone who grew up AFAB, I spent a lot of my teenage years being hyper aware of it.

People express themselves in different ways, and makeup is never a must. No one should ever have to wear it if they don’t want to. Makeup is my expression but I’m not wearing it to live up to the expectations of a world who sees me as a woman. It’s part of my existence as an enby, and no one can take that from me. But I make my own post and don’t comment on those women sharing the trauma associated with makeup culture. Because their experiences are valid, the culture surrounding makeup is often shitty, and hopping in to say “well, I wear makeup because I like it and not to adhere to society” undermines the point of these posts.

The Trick Is to... (Glee)

Disclaimer: I own nothing except an overactive imagination and way too many plotbunnies.

Episode revamp of “A Katy or a Gaga”, where hypocrisy and injustice are exposed. (Yes, I got angry. Who could ever have guessed?)

The Trick Is to...

“I'm sorry, Marley, but you're suspended for the rest of week.”

The words echo in her head as she walks through the school. Suspended. She's never been suspended in her life, and now Mr Schue's suspending her for not wanting to waltz around in a seashell bikini?

Marley doesn't know whether to be angry or start sobbing. And then it hits her. She's been assuming he meant Glee, but what if he meant an actual suspension? What if she's suspended for real?

Being barred from Glee is going to put her behind for Nationals, which is bad enough, but being suspended from school will go on her permanent record, and can potentially cause trouble for years. Marley knows she won't be going to college without a perfect GPA, and the kind of record that gets you scholarships. She also knows that a suspension can get in the way of that.

As the panic rises she starts walking towards the dining hall, wanting her mom, only to stop halfway there. Her mom works so hard, and the last thing she needs is more stress. Better to try and work it out on her own, preferably without her mom ever having to know.

Only she can't do this on her own, and there's really no one she trusts to help her. Two months ago would have been different, but... She swallows down another sob.

Without really thinking it through she pulls up her phone and hits a number she's never called before, hoping to get an answer.

“Hello?” The voice in the other end sounds questioning and slightly suspicious. It also sounds a bit different than she remembers. “Look, if this is a prank call...”

“Kurt? This is Marley, Marley Rose from–”

“From McKinley, and New Directions.” Kurt's voice is sliding back to the higher tones she's used to, and is beginning to sound a bit warmer. “Yes, I remember you. Not to be rude, but I'm a bit surprised to have you call me. Has something happened?”

She hesitates, suddenly doubting herself. Maybe she's overreacting. Just... And so she finds herself telling Kurt the whole story, up until the sad conclusion.

“...and I don't know what to do, and I didn't know who to talk to, and I just miss Finn so much!” She can barely breathe as she chokes out the last words. “He would never have done this.”

He wouldn't have, she knows it. Marley remembers Artie being uncomfortable with the calender back at Christmas, and how Finn dealt with that, and she just knows that not only would he never have pushed for her to wear the bikini, or suspended her for refusing, but also he never would have let Mr Schue do it either.

“Marley, honey, did you call me because you couldn't call Finn? Because if you did, then that's okay. Really. I'm honored that you'd let me stand in for him.

“So. Take a deep breath. Do you need to blow your nose? I'll wait.”

Once she's blown her nose – because yes, she really needs it – and taken a drink of water Marley picks up her phone again and tries to apologize for breaking down on Kurt.

“Nonsense. No apologies necessary. It sounds like you have every reason to be upset. Now, what you're telling me is that Sam, Artie, Blaine and Mr Schue tried to push you into wearing a bikini in school, and when you weren't comfortable with it they not only refused to listen but also berated and punished you? Am I understanding it correctly?”

It sounds so harsh like that, but Marley can't deny that that's what happened.

“Right. So what do you want from me? Do you want advise, or do you want more tangible help? Because I can do both. Oh! Have you talked to Mrs Pillsbury-Schuester yet, by the way?”

“No, I– It's her husband, you know?”

“Marley? I know it's tough, but her job is to be there for you as a student. Not to protect her husband. Granted, she doesn't have the best track-record when it comes to the protection part, but she's been doing better.

“Would you like me to call her for you?”

“Would you?” The thought makes her weak in the knees from relief. She's so used to having to fight all her battles on her own, with only her mom on her side, and having someone willing to stand up for her... That is worth more than Marley can express.

Except all things considered...

“Are you sure you want to do this? I am really grateful for you offering, but I'd understand if you changed your mind. I don't want to cause any trouble with you and Blaine.”

“Oh, don't you worry about that. You just keep calm. Keep breathing. I'll be fine. Besides, I'd talk to Blaine about this anyway.”

She can swear she hears him mutter something else, but clearly she must be hearing things. After all, why would Kurt call his fiancé a hypocrite?

O---o--o---O

The next morning there's a message on her phone from Mrs Pillsbury-Schuester asking Marley to come by her office first thing. It also tells her not to worry. Maybe whatever Kurt did worked.

When Marley enters the guidance counselor's office Mr Schue's already there, sitting on one of the chairs and looking less than happy. Marley takes the chair furthest from him, hoping he doesn't notice her pushing it a bit closer to Mrs Pillsbury-Schuester first.

“Thank you for coming, Marley. We're just waiting for a few more people, but they shouldn't be too long.”

They wait in silence. Artie's the first one through the door, with Sam and a sulking Blaine just behind them. And though Blaine might be the only one outright sulking, none of them look exactly happy. Then again, why should they? Marley's pretty sure she doesn't either, and she can see neither of the adults do. The whole thing's an uncomfortable, unpleasant mess.

All she can do is keep breathing, one deep breath after the other, just like Kurt told her, and not just let them steamroll over her because letting them is easier than standing up for herself.

Mrs Pillsbury-Schuester allows the boys to sit down, and looks them over for a little while before starting to speak.

“Unless you boys are clear on it, we are here because of the events in Glee over the past few days. Now, I understand that the three of you were supposed to work on an assignment with Marley and that you were upset with her for refusing to wear the costume you decided on? Now, let me make something perfectly clear.

“In this school– no, nowhere is it okay to push a girl, or a woman, into exposing herself in a manner she is not comfortable with. Marley told you she felt uncomfortable walking around in a bikini, and you should all have listened. That you did not speaks very poorly of the three of you.”

And wow, Marley didn't think Mrs Pillsbury-Schuester was capable of sounding that stern.

“In fact, had she chosen to walk around the school wearing that costume she would have been violating McKinley's dress code. Had a member of faculty seen her she should have, at the very least, been sent home. Depending on circumstances consequences could have been much worse. That in itself would have been reason for Marley to refuse, and for you to accept.

“I am deeply ashamed of all of you. Marley is your teammate. Up until this I would have assumed she was your friend, or that you at the very least would have her back. I cannot even begin to express how much you failed her, even without taking recent struggles into consideration.”

That reference to the eating disorder she'd allowed herself to be stressed into makes Marley want to curl up into a ball and hide, but with both Kurt and Mrs Pillsbury-Schuester going to bat for her she wants to prove worthy of their effort and so she keeps taking deep steady breaths instead.

“Artie. Only a short while ago you backed out of a photo shoot because you felt uncomfortable being topless. Not only were you told your feelings were valid but you were allowed to participate fully clothed.

“Sam. Your first semester here you backed out of your part in 'Rocky Horror Show' because you weren't comfortable with your outfit. You were allowed to do that without hassle, even though there weren't really a backup for you, and you were told it was okay.

“Blaine. While you haven't asked for special consideration on account of body issues,” and wow, that smug look on his face is really off-putting, “you have made your feelings about the use of sex and sexiness as a tool known, loudly and on several accounts. Something about not being for sale, wasn't it?”

The smug look goes away instantly, as if wiped off, and now Blaine just looks like he's swallowing down anger. Sam on the other hand looks like someone's thrown a bucket of ice-water on him. And Marley? All she can think is huh. Apparently Kurt did have reason to mutter about hypocrisy when it came to his fiancé.

“That the three of you, with that background, would completely ignore Marley's concerns quite frankly makes you hypocrites. Now, the school rules don't allow me to punish you for being hypocrites, or being bad teammates. They do however allow punishment when it comes to sexual harassment.”

What? Marley stares at their usually meek guidance counselor with wide eyes and a half-open mouth. She's not the only one.

“Your actions, pushing her to wear such a costume – especially seeing as she's 16 and all three of you are over 18 – could easily have you reported for sexual harassment. In fact, should Marley decide she wants to, I'll help her file that report.”

All three boys sputter at that, with Blaine's voice rising above to claim he could never be sexually harassing her on account of being gay, and Marley...she just sits there stunned.

“Quiet! Now, whether or not Marley wants to make that report is up to her. In fact, it is entirely possible that I'll file such a report myself either way. Regardless I'll be keeping an eye on you going forward, because this kind of behavior is unacceptable and I'm not yet convinced any of you understand this.

“For now, however, you can leave for your classes.”

Sam rises first and goes to opens the door for Artie. Before he gets there it seems Mrs Pillsbury-Schuester has one more point to drive home.

“Oh, and boys? If I find out that any of you harass Marley about this our next conversation will be taking place with your parents present in preparation for a suspension.”

Sam and Artie nod quickly before leaving. Blaine however looks at Mr Schue first, like he's seeking guidance, before giving his own nod, looking both reluctant and petulant. Marley looks at him and winces internally, because something tells her Kurt's going to be paying for this.

“Now, just to round things off, Marley. When it comes to your so-called suspension, Mr Schuester does have the right to bar you from participating in Glee for a period of time, should he feel it warranted. Should it become too extended or permanent you can definitely take it up with either me or Mr Figgins, as no student should be barred from an extra-curricular without actual reason.”

And that tone told Marley clearer than any words that Mrs Pillsbury-Schuester didn't think her husband had reason this time, and that she expected him to back off.

“This however does not mean that you're suspended. Also, there will be nothing in your official file or on your record about this. I would like you to stop by before you go home today, so that you and I can talk privately about this. And finally, Marley? I want you to think really hard about the sexual harassment complaint. I know that it must be hard, considering you're supposed to be a team, but what happened here is not okay and I don't want you thinking it is.

“In fact, you should know that if you want to make an official complaint against Mr Schuester for his part in this mess I do believe you have cause. Whether or not anything will come of it is anyone's guess, of course,” and the words with Sue Sylvester in charge are hanging in the air, “but you do have cause.”

And that's...a lot to think about. Marley says the right things, or at least she tries to, and gets up to leave so that the Schuesters can have what's sure to be a very uncomfortable conversation.

Before she can close the door behind her she hears Mrs Pillsbury-Schuester sigh and tell her husband, in a disappointed voice, that he needs to figure out what constitutes appropriate reasons for suspension and what aren't, because suspending a student for refusing to expose herself while doing nothing when other students fight in the choir room just isn't acceptable.

Marley's even pretty sure she's meant to hear that, which...is a mess she isn't even going to try to unravel. It does give her quite a few things to think about when it comes to Mr Schue.

That's for later though, as is trying to figure out how this'll effect Glee. Now is for walking to her first class, for getting through the day, and maybe for trying to fix things with Jake.

It's definitely for taking Kurt's advice. For straightening her back, keeping her head high and to simply...

keep breathing.

semester 4.1 preview

who let me be a senior. this was clearly a horrible decision

i can’t believe we’re here. but we’re here. THE SEVENTH ITERATION OF THE SEMESTER PREVIEWS

classes

operating systems - i’m honestly pretty scared of this class, it seems pretty hard (content and assignments wise) and it’s a grad class. Luckily though, I’m taking it with a friend, and this is the only class I anticipate to be really hard for me, so hopefully that should offset some of the suffering. I was also slightly worried because i took a systems class (security) last semester and it was also kinda difficult, but that was also partly my fault because i took that class without having taken the prereq, and THIS SEMESTER, i will have, in fact, taken the prereq class! so we’re already a leg up from last semester

computational photography - i was kinda like shrug about this class at first, mostly just registered for it because my friend said it was a good class, but i didnt have a lot of time to actually read what the class was about. After the first class though, i’m so excited about it!! everything we’re going to learn about looks super cool, the class looks chill, and the prof seems awesome. I’m also vaguely interested in this because the Photos product area I worked on last summer also has a computational photography team, so maybe some of this stuff will be relevant?

linear algebra - i walked in, and there were all these sophomores, and I was like “i have made a grave mistake of procrastinating taking this class.” seriously though, I’m not super worried right off the bat about this class because I did take linalg in high school, 18.03 my freshman fall, and skimmed over some linalg concepts in other course 6 classes i took here. The one thing I am nervous slightly about is that I haven’t taken a math class in 3 years, so can I still do math? Not sure, i had major issues doing an integral the other day ngl

undergrad research seminar - i have no idea what the actual name of this class is. regardless, it’s the second communication requirement of my major, which is all about learning how to communicate in the context of doing research. some of you might remember me freaking out last semester about finding a research position for this semester, and tldr this is what that was for lol. in the past, people have warned me about this class because the class itself was a lot of busy work, but the first class seemed ok? it looks like the setup is a bunch of profs giving lectures on their research, and then assignments are mostly just writing up what you come up with during your research.

other things i’m doing this semester -

I’m LA’ing a class, which is a new experience for me, so I’m pretty excited! One of my favorite things I’ve done here is tutor and help people with psets and classes, so I hope this will be a similar experience :D

still doing random house gov things. lots of new initiatives (including new representatives, a sustainability committee, and a podcast?), so we’ll see how those go!

Luckily, I think I already have my next summer plans mostly sorted out, so I won’t have to worry too much about recruiting this fall semester, which is....something i haven’t been able to say since freshman fall, which was a time in which i did not even know recruiting was a thing. Mostly the theme for this semester will probably be “research, research, and..... more research” (I’m in the middle of two UROPs right now, and I cannot recommend enough to NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF), and “focusing on people!” again because its important

i think i’ll do a post soon on the “story of this UROP paper that i keep ranting about on snapchat” because there are some really quality stories surrounding me willing this paper to fruition. (basically for the past nine months, I’ve been in the writing and revising process for a paper from my UROP project, and this has resulted in a lot of late nights/all-nighters because time does not exist during the semester)

[Second week of 2019.11] White Spirit devlog - Misunderstanding of Manipulator and the struggle with bugs

This week, the code I started fixing after discovering an issue that did not clean up event callbacks in the editor created a fairly complex bug. I spent quite a lot of time looking for bugs in three days, so I have fewer devlog this week.

As soon as I created the dialog last week, I implemented the selection dialog. However, while implementing this, I found that the usage of the Manipulator is wrong.

The first discovery that the Action event that implemented and registered the dialog event last week was not cleaned up when the event editor was unloaded.

I was thinking that the UnregisterCallbacksFromTarget method would be called when the element was removed from the layout.

Fortunately, this problem was solved simply by removing the Manipulator from DetachFromPanelEvent.

(If you recycle layout object, this is not recommended. Remove the Manipulator when your layout object are cleaned up.)

So, I revamped our abstract Manipulator class for the event editor.

Changed DetachFromPanelEvent to handle internally automatically.

However, while fixing this, I found some difficult bugs.

As the Unity came to 2019, there was even a bug where Unity crashed every time when view a native object in debugger, so I spent quite a bit of time debugging in the editor.

Fortunately it was a simple problem and I fixed a bug that was difficult.

And while checking this, I found out that Json.NET is basically able to parse even if it contains line breaks.

The default parser included in JavaScript, the original owner of JSON, doesn't accept this syntax (...)

Anyway, the fact that line breaks are parseable can be useful when I need a long text.

Anyway, after going through various problems, I added a camera change event, a camera zoom event, and added a feature to assign a unique color to each event.

This work is now beginning to end. I want to make some real parts of game...

During Week 4, an online reading briefly discussed using SMART goals to create a social media strategy. Before taking this class, I wanted to take initiative and create SMART goals and apply them to my personal life such as planning ahead, being more organized, and managing my time better. While I did successfully submit all but one assignment on time, I struggled with balancing school and work this month. As Professor Foley discussed, it is important to establish yourself online as a public relations professional so that you are viewed as credible and respected. It is equally important to create posts that cater to your platform and your target audience.

Next, I learned how to create my own media website. This is something that I have been wanting to do for a while, but wanted to wait until “the right time” to do so. This class definitely gave me the push I needed to build my professional brand. My media site included a professional-looking selfie, an About Me, a YouTube brand video, examples of previous work, contact information, social media handles, and more!

Finally, I learned how to schedule posts through Hootsuite and Later. Before taking this course, I was already vaguely familiar with Hootsuite. However, I had never registered or schedule posts before. Later was new to me. The importance of scheduling posts is to reach my audience during times when they are most engaged. Although scheduling posts takes a lot of preparation and effort, it could make the difference in whether or not your business/brand succeeds.

One way that the information I learned in IPR will help my professional career as a public relations professional is by building a solid foundation for me to continue growing upon. Even though some information was not new to me, I had a better appreciation and understanding for the tools I used and their significance. I want to continue building my brand through social media so that by the time I graduate, it becomes second nature. In the meantime, Social Media Metrics and ROI, here I come!

Hack #3: This is an example of how the stand works and looks from the front (second photo). I also use the stand for my planner. It is helpful to be able to have your planner/to do list right in front of you while you are completing tasks for the day. I have purchased a Create 365: The Happy Planner and it is set up with three boxes for each day. I use one box for each school (since I attend two different colleges) and the last box for other things I need to accomplish that day. I make little checkboxes inside each box for each task I need to complete and mark them off when I have finished the task. I also color coordinate for each class/school which makes it helpful when I am glancing at the planner so I can differentiate which items are for which class/school. This also helps on the monthly view of the calendar, where I continue to use color coding to write tests and papers. The colors match the binders I use for each class to keep everything consistent. I also have three snap-in tabs in The Happy Planner (I purchased these at Staples). I use the first tab for this month’s monthly view, the second tab I use for this week’s weekly view/today’s view (which you are viewing in this photo), and the last tab I use for next month’s monthly view so I can write down upcoming assignments and appointments. They are handy to have right at the top of the planner because the side view tabs are hidden when the planner is closed (which I do like for aesthetic purposes).

Hack #4: Cord management is a big issue because I have a tv on the wall above my desk. Which means inevitable wires...everywhere! So the one wire that I couldn’t hide, I took a tall floral arrangement and wrapped the cord in there. Which you cannot see from straight-on, but from this angle, it is slightly visable. So if you have cords that hang down the wall and you can’t hide them in the wall, for whatever reason, use a plant, picture, tapestry or lamp even to creatively hide them.

Hack #5: This is an important “hack” because if you don’t stay hydrated you’ll start to get tired and no one wants to be tired when they are in the middle of a great workflow! So stay hydrated so your body can function properly. When I say to stay hydrated, I mean with water. I invested in one of these metal vacuum bottles, I found it super affordable at Tuesday Morning. It holds 25 oz., so I know how much water I am drinking and it keeps my water cold in the car during the summer as well. These bottles can keep your water cold for up to twenty-four hours! Similar to the popular Hydroflask, which I wanted to try a competitor before I invested the full $50 in a Hydroflask. I’ll tell you why I won’t spend $50 on one if you comment and specifically ask me to. But we tend to drink more water if it’s colder, so I highly recommend investing in one of these “stay cold” bottles.

Hack #6: My last hack is to use one a cosmetics organizer as a pen/stationery organizer! I found this cute organizer at Hobby Lobby and used a 40% off coupon to purchase it under $10! It organizes my colored highlighters and felt-tipped pens. It’s an essential if you're a pen junkie like myself. I also love how it can hold things as large as a post-it and a giant paperweight in the front compartment.

After revamping in the Julian timetable, two days were added to make the length of twenty-nine days to thirty-one days. In the year 2020 timetable, the time of December will be considered as what could be contrasted with June in the opposite side of the equator. This month will reflect the time of winter solstice, and the day will be the briefest in the year. December will be seen as the start of winter season in the Northern Hemisphere.

I had a pretty broad idea of what art was at the beginning of this course. In my first discussion post, I had said that art was a way for artists to show the world the way they see, feel, and experience things. I thought of art as a mirror for the artist and a window for the viewer. I knew that art was versatile and could be experienced in different ways, not just visually.

One of the videos I loved from this course was the video that aimed to define what art is and what it includes. Poetry is a form of art. Photography is a form of art. Literature is a form of art. Music is a form of art. I liked how my classmates took this and used it in their various response projects where they used different mediums to create their own pieces.

I learned of the importance of art in society. During our section on institutional critique. I became familiar with artists like Matthieu Laurette who primarily works through technology like television and video installations and other forms of media. His art pieces aren’t available to view in art institutions like galleries or museums. I did not know that artists could display their work outside of art institutions. I also didn’t know that art institutions aren’t as inclusive as they seem, and they aren’t the only place someone can go to view art.

An art form I found interesting that was introduced to me through this course was installation art. I was not aware that entire rooms like Yayoi Kusama’s Obliteration Room can be described as a single piece of art. I also did not know these installations can be moved to different host locations.

From the institutional critique section, I also learned that art critics and institutional critics are artists themselves. While this makes sense now, I didn’t realize that this could be a possibility until I began researching institutional critics and actual artists and their work popped up. I realized that their critique of institutions was embedded in their artwork. Laurette, for example, critiques how art institutions like museums and galleries aren’t equipped for works like his own that extensively utilize media.

My understanding of the role art plays in society has evolved tremendously since taking this course. Public art especially plays a huge role in society because of how easily accessible it is for viewers. Since public art isn’t displayed in art institutions, viewers needn’t look far to find it and ponder its message. Artists like Banksy create cryptic images that share a message about societal issues.

From this week’s videos and readings, I learned more about how art can be used for practical reasons. My experience with creating practical art is miniscule in comparison to what artists today do. I can recall how in elementary school, I created a trinket dish out of clay in my art class, and I still use it today to hold small pieces of jewelry like rings. A very simple example of practical art. Rick Lowe creates practical art that serves a greater purpose. He refurbishes rows of houses that were meant to be torn down, and makes them livable again. His art in turn created a transitional housing program where single mothers could live in until they were able to leave.

Some misconceptions about artists that I had at the start of this course mainly had to do with the type of art artists create. I never considered revamping an entire neighborhood a form of art. Sure I saw architecture as art but simply rebuilding houses and improving whole neighborhoods didn’t seem like art to me until learning more about them. I can compare Rick Lowe’s project to that of Theaster Gates who over time, revived an entire neighborhood. The two are similar because they both reinvented run-down buildings into thriving communities.

I also used to think that art was always created to both mean something but also be pleasing to the eye. While conducting research for the Wiki assignments, I discovered that this wasn’t the case. Through almost all historical art movements, artists were always responding to events going on in politics and society at the time. Everything that went into art pieces always served a purpose and artists rarely did things, to just do them. There seemed to always be a reason. For example, during the Rococo art movement, artists made small-scale paintings and sculptures because most of the works during this time were created for private sponsors. Most of the art work made in the Rococo movement was to be used as decorations for homes and meant to be enjoyed privately. In contrast, pieces from the Baroque art movement were meant to be viewed by the public and often aimed to spread propaganda so they were a lot more serious and quite large, so they were easier to view by the public.
