Roles of the Kingdoms - The General Roles
The Shepherds
The Rulers: The Sky Kingdoms are primarily ruled by their Kings and Queens who oversee the stability of their kingdom. They’re meant to take onboard the opinions of their subjects and do their best to ensure that everyone is happy. While most kingdoms have no preference, the Kingdom of the Shining Sun is specifically matriarch-prioritizing and proper blooded queens hold rank over kings. The Rulers are often busy with organizing their kingdom and ensuring that resources are properly distributed to all the spaces that need it alongside tending to Vashara’s Hearth. It’s believed that the Sky Kindlers speak most clearly through the king and queen and that it is their divine duty to ensure that the cats they serve are healthy, happy and cared for.
Heirs: The Heirs are the kits of their current king and queen. The eldest kit (or in the case of the Shining Sun, the eldest daughter unless there are none) is considered the Crown Heir - the one who will take over when their parents step down or if they die. Their siblings are normal heirs who assist in the management of the kingdom’s micromanagement. The heirs are often considered closer and more intertwined with all the cats they looked out for as nobility - and for this reason, the kingdom prefers larger litters of royal heirs. They are expected to spend their days bonding with their kingdom and learning the ins and out of how to manage the kingdom appropriately.
Nobility: Cats of royal blood that are not of the direct ruling line anymore - this is often the siblings of former or current rulers that have had kits. These cats are often sent away to learn and develop relationships with other kingdoms and societies, offering information and guidance to peacemakers on all sides. Nobility are also helpful when the royal litter is small and the heirs need assistance in managing all the tasks that would usually be divided among the litter. Nobility also includes Consorts - partners of the king and queen who have no claim to the throne beyond their union to rulers and any kits that come from this. Consorts will not take over the kingdom unless the entire original line of leading cats is tragically killed off.
---
The Guardians
---
Guardians are the defenders of the kingdom and the only members capable of using makai - a prerequisite of becoming a guardian is in fact, the ability to access makai. Aside from the royal family where it seems to be passed down and inherited, the gene for cats of the kingdoms to use makai appears to be completely random with those that cannot outnumbering those that can. As a result, the cats of the Kingdoms fully believe that this was a decision made by the Sky Kindlers - there are those who are meant to protect and those who are meant to be protected.
All guardians possess a specific charm on their collars that identify their class and their rank that must be worn at all times. Guardians without their charms cannot enforce laws or act as individuals of authority. A guardian who loses their charm is often considered irresponsible and untrustworthy by the kingdom as a whole and among their fellow guardians.
Captains: Each of the Guardians Pathways have a Captain and a commander - the highest rank a guardian can receive. A captain is considered masters in their chosen field and oversee the guardians in their field, often designing training programs and are the ones to be consulted when it comes to guardians requesting to accept a page as a squire. They take on the hardest missions and the most complex tasks. Each profession of guardian is looked over by two captains who oversee their profession jointly, with one filling in for the other if a captain is unavailable. Captains are chosen by the cats in their profession but must have achieved at least two stripes to be considered in the running.
Enforcers: The most well-known and populous version of guardian as they perform among the most visible of tasks. Enforcers take shifts guarding the main entrance to the kingdom, assist the farmers in protecting their livestock from the various predators that could target them. Enforcers are the first cats called when skirmishes break out in the kingdom and are the ones primarily responsible for capturing criminals within the kingdom’s clearing.
Healers: Practitioners of makai capable of manipulating their abilities to cure illnesses and injuries. Healers are among the rarest form of guardians as it’s not often that makai aligns in a way that allows them to perform the miracles that healers do. They are made to memorize all kinds of herbal combinations, illnesses and sicknesses. It’s not uncommon for the kingdoms to trade their healers between each other in the interest of ensuring that all knowledge of healing is equally distributed.
Seeker: An important hybrid sort of role that perform most of the kingdom’s outer and exo-territory tasks. Seekers are responsible for retrieving and delivering messages between the kingdoms and their various receivers. The Sky Kingdoms are easily the most welcoming and open society of Strelles and have many treaties, trade agreements and such with not just their fellow kingdoms but also the Canine Republics and some of the Roaming Skulks. In addition, Seekers retrieve runaway cats that are attempting to escape trial or sentencing for their crimes and occasionally, kill cats they are specifically contracted to.
---
The Providers
---
The providers are cats of the kingdom without the ability to use makai but still serve and help the kingdom. They are considered the pillars of the kingdom for if they were to fall, the kingdom would topple soon after. Providers possess simple collars without charms, instead having clasps that identify their profession on them.
Unlike the Guardians, most Providers do not have 'captains' - just a series of masters who've been working in their respective pathways for a long time. There are no official titles but the most well-known masters are often treated with the same amount of respect as Captains are.
Farmers: Responsible for feeding the kingdom as a whole, a large portion of cats are some kind of farmer. They raise livestock to ensure that the kingdom doesn’t rely wholly on wild prey, breed specific kinds of livestock to offer better rewards and lately, they’ve even begun creating helpful companion variants of creatures formerly viewed as irritating pests. Farmers keep a portion of all the livestock they raise before it’s portioned out to be given to all of the kingdom and packaged for various trade deals.
Gardeners: Many cats who want to be healers but find themselves not possessing makai (or too squeamish at the idea of blood) become gardeners. A truly vital role in the kingdom, not only do gardeners create specific kinds of plants to feed livestock (especially during the snow season); they are primarily responsible for the growing and maintenance of herbs. Gardens work closely with healers to ensure there is always a stable, healthy supply of herbs to be used at any given moment - either for sick members of the kingdoms or for emergencies trades.
Nurses: Nurses are the cats who are responsible for the overall upkeep and maintenance of the Nursery Kingdom - where all pregnant cats, recovering parents and kits stay until they’re ready to join the main clearing’s dens. Nurses clear dirt, clean nets, feed residents and watch young kits while their parents take time for themselves. They’re also the default caretakers for any orphans that end up in the kingdom, with many being orphans themselves who want to help other kits the way they were helped.
Artisans: Crafters and designers, artisans are responsible for the technology and dressings often found in the sky kingdoms. They are sculptors who work with clay creating various kinds of bowls, they carve things in wood, work with leather to create collars and satchels alongside the complex task of weaving. It’s a hard job where you’re expected to be learning every day of your career and trying new things.
---
The General Kingdom
---
Pages: A very young cat preparing to start training for a rank. These cats are usually 3-5 moons old and spend most of their ‘training’ learning about the Rites of the Sky, attending lessons from tutors and running errands for all of the established cats of the clan. It may seem like a lot of work but it’s meant to get a page thinking about what they want to be in life while also getting them into basic conditioning.
Squires: A young-cat in training often under a specific cat. These cats are learning about the various ranks, often trying out various jobs as they do their best to settle on a pathway. They start falling into squad groupings - training groups that spend most of their time together - and budding leaders are starting to be identified. Traditionally, a cat settles on a profession by at least 8 moons old and begins working their way through pathway specific training from there.
Residents: Nursing cats looking after their kits in the kingdom’s nursery. Residents tend to stay within the nursery until they’re old enough to begin squiring and as a result, join the main nests in the clearing. Residents aren’t expected to do anything but rest while they inhabit the nursery - they have already served the kingdom by having kits and looking out for them. This is especially true given most residents have other jobs that are put on hold until their kits can be left alone for long periods of time.
Kits: Kits are the future of the kingdom- considered to be any cat under the age of one cycle with different privileges based on how close they are to this mark. While they’re confined to the Nursery Clearing, kits are taught by tutors and their parents about the world around them. Most kits will go on to become providers, joining their parents in caring for the kingdom. A select number of kits who show promise will be recommended to the Guardians who will then consult the kits’ parent about their options.
Tutors: The teachers and shepherd of the young in the kingdoms. Tutors work closely alongside nurses to raise kits, teaching them about kingdom history; the myths and tales of the souls, basic information about the societies surrounding them but most importantly: they teach kits to properly speak Sivake as is their right as a member of the Sky kingdoms. The kingdoms heavily value knowledge of all kinds and when they acquired writing from the Roaming Skulks, they took the opportunity to begin recording as much as they can about their language and the languages of the other societies.

I just realized something in Tears of the Kingdom.
When Link awakens a sage, they give him some of their power in the form of a vow as a way to prove they stand with him. This is done differently depending on the sage but it’s mainly done through hand-to-hand contact like a handshake.
Tumblr media
Back to the beginning of the game, when Link opens the Temple of Time and sees Zelda’s spiritual form, what does she do?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She shakes his hand and he gains the recall ability.
Zelda, in the past, became the Sage of Time. This scene is her giving her vow to Link and the recall ability is proof of her vow.
