A happy ending for Sasuke is literally not even POSSIBLE for basically ALL of Naruto like it's not even funny. He really never even had a CHANCE he has of living a decent life, it's not even on the TABLE, by literally no fault of his own (because he's never done anything wrong). I'm going to scream.
0-6? Forces unbelievably outside of his control are organizing, ensuring, and executing an ethnic cleansing of his entire clan at the hands of his favoritest person in the world. Forces including the shattered psyche of said favoritest person, who tortures him until he is too terrified and traumatized to even think about anything else for years.
7-12? enrolled in Child Soilder School, completely isolated socially (not as a pariah but as a prodigy) befret of any support system, still traumatized beyond belief, and left with no outlet for any of his issues besides obsessing over the day, one day in the future, where Itachi will be dead and all this unresolved suffering and guilt and love and anger and fear and fear and FEAR will go away forever. Right? Because it has to. There has to be an end. Right?
12? Government assigned found family give him the support and love and attention and outlet and for the future that he's been craving for so long he didn't even KNOW it's what he needed. Has a soulmate and a bestie that can read his mind and a mentor who actually is willing to meet him where he's at and help him and maybe even love him and is this......Hope? That perhaps he can have a life outside of what Itachi did to- Itachi. Itach- FUCK. ITACHI IS LITERALLY HUNTING NARUTO FOR SPORT WITH ALL HIS WAR CRIMINAL FRIENDS AND SASUKE SHOULDN'T HAVE LET HIS GUARD DOWN BECAUSE IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW STRONG KAKASHI OR EVEN THE WHOLE VILLAGE IS, ITACHI WILL KILL ANYONE SASUKE IS STUPID AND SHORT SIDED AND CRUEL ENOUGH TO CARE ABOUT, HOW DID HE FORGET, HOW DARE HE FORGET, HE NEEDS TO GET STRONGER HE NEEDS TO AVENGE HIS CLAN HE NEEDS TO FUFILL HIS FRATERNAL DUTY HE NEEDS TO LEAVE BEFORE ANYONE ELSE IS MURDERED BY ASSOCIATION-
13-16? He dropped a lit match on his support system behind him him and ran into the cold shadows of obsessive anger that he only stepped out of long enough to loose the ability to ignore the gnawing want for warmth. That's bad enough, not even taking cohabitating with goddamned OROCHIMARU. No further explanation required there.
17? Kills his brother, gets NONE of the 'benefits' he spent his life convincing (begging) himself must be awaiting at the end. Instead everyhting has, in fact, gotten much worse very quickly and now all he has is a list of powerful people and systems that don't work and hurts and kills and tortures the people they've promised to protect that no one except him will oppose because it's basically suicide, and isn't he already so familiar with being on the shit side of this dynamic? Isn't it the normalest thing in the world, to fill the hole where his vengeance used to be with a hunt with near identical goals and intentions of his first vengance, the only real difference being his increasing dissalussion with ever being able to 'go back home', his almost all comsuming doubt that there's a 'home' waiting for him still, if there ever even was? So he dives into another goal before it goes as cold as the love he doesn't dare indulge, accumulating more power and rage then he knows what to do with (where can he put it down? where can he put it down?) and no reason NOT to challange corruption until it's either all gone or it kills him. Naruto, once the only person who looked at him with empathy instead of pity or expectation, thinks he should grit his teeth and bear it and go back to the village, as if that was ever an option for him. Sakura, once the only person who understood him, who followed his every thought process with ease and loved him even when he thought himself a monster, has finally given up on him and tries to kill him. What can he do but laugh as the world burns? It burned him first.
(but if that was true, then why is he still so cold?)

Ok y’all can thank the Naruto server for this one coming up, but we were talking about Itachi’s really erratic motives — specifically how he seems to say one thing and do another where his brother is concerned, and how for a supposed “genius” his plans are usually either self defeating or rely on events he wouldn’t have known about to come about.
If we take the theory that he was used via Shisui’s eye, his lack of clear logical reasoning around the whole event would make sense. Shisui’s eye (for anyone having forgotten) is capable of total hypnosis, but only once every 10 years.
Tumblr media
That it’s a complete hypnotism would explain why his story never quite adds up like it should, even once it’s all allegedly told. (He still can’t make it add up to himself either.) But he also can’t question it exactly — but this sort of makes his logic fall apart weirdly as it builds on a faulty narrative which conflicts with his stated goals… etc.
Also Itachi not just either going ahead and using it to hypnotize Sasuke to begin with instead of the weird bird swallowing BS mess or just not doing that didn’t even make sense to the people he was explaining all this to at the time. (Bee straight up asks him why he wasted so much time making Naruto eat some bird if this was the plan.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However if he either had a weird priority tree via hypnosis which fucked up his already existing plans *or* someone thought using Sasuke to KO a few big hitters before being ultimately hypnotized back into being controlled (less likely option… but also perhaps an already tested strategy?). But like slipping “and then get hypnotized into protected Konoha for some fucking reason idk” into the little brother repeating history for a Mangyeko criteria could work especially if it had actually happened in that order before
This is why I wonder if he had the same drive forced into him. Because “ok whatever, but you have to protect Konoha no matter what” as an impulse drive which was also counter to his actual priority tree would definitely make for a lot of the same erratic choices…
And who had a plausible motive (and also very little canon characterization to say he wouldn’t do this)?
Tumblr media
And there he says it, to Itachi, notably still in possession of the eye (which does not need to be in your body to be used, as proven when Itachi uses it later without grafting it to himself).
And furthermore, this took place ten years before Itachi is talking to Naruto here, explaining that he couldn’t use Shisui’s eye earlier both because it needed to charge for 10 years and because he was ethically opposed (except where his brother was concerned I fucking guess….) Meaning that it had been used and that he must have had some way of knowing this besides checking it.
Tumblr media
Now we know that Shisui was prevented by Danzo from using his eye to help with the whole Uchiha Coup situation, and whether he committed suicide or faked his death (a lot can be argued for the latter) this was the last time he had either eye, so barring other evidence or a different use for it, I think he used it here to override Itachi’s priorities.

Caught up with the BNHA Anime again and was like eh why not make a little chart of my opinions on BNHA ships. Whatever!! Misc. Opinions/basic thoughts on each under the cut
Shindeku:
This one's my fav tbh. They haven't interacted too too much but of course I always pick a somewhat rare pair to be my fav. I think their personalities work well together and I want to see some casual friend time between them before the series ends, PLEASE.... Also AU potential for if Deku joined general studies at UA. I also like that their quirks would make a very cool Hero team possibility.
MirioDeku:
Sunshine guy / crybaby dynamic yipee [yeah i know it works better with Tamaki but I don't really like him. Sorry.] Also the fact that their birthday is on the same day is SO cute??? I think their interactions in canon are fun. I'm never a big fan of "child character adopts younger child character" but I think the two of them make a good "big brothers" dynamic for Eri. I think early Mirio/Deku can give Deku more motivation to be strong [as if he needs it] and a source of positivity is nice.
[Also no I don't care that Mirio is 18. they're 2-3 years apart. Its not that deep. I'm 23 and dating a 20 year old. They are two years apart in school, and its not that big a gap in maturity. Its fine.]
RodyDeku:
Not pictured above but I wanna talk about it anyway. I haven't seen the movie since it was in theaters BUT I LOVE THESE TWO??? Speaking of fun dynamics and characters that get along well. Ough. Also Rody's quirk makes very fun possibilities for fanart and fanfiction.
BakuOcha:
Yeah you might have figured out I lean towards ships in shonen where the main starter point for the ship was "that one time they beat the shit out of each other". I think the sports festival battle put this one in my head, its the fact that Bakugo respected Uraraka enough to not underestimate her and actually use her name that got me. I also think their personalities work better then say, Deku and Bakugo, because Uraraka was NOT childhood friends with Bakugo.
DekuOcha:
Let's be real, its the canon ship. Its what is going to be end game, even if you don't want it to. So its going to have cute moments, and even though I don't want this ship to be canon, its going to be, so I'm going to enjoy the cute moments they have. These characters are literally written to be each others crushes so you really don't have to argue for it. I do like Uraraka better then say, a character like Sakura [Naruto], because she isn't just blindly going for a character who she thinks is hot and throws away a lot of other things just for the one guy[I could go into a Sakura Rant but Not Today]. Uraraka has distinct dreams and goals and personality! [Although that's not to say I love her- I think she could be better and female characters in this show are repeatedly designed and written in ways I loathe but that rant is for another day]
DekuMei:
They're nerds that can rant together. Yeah that's pretty much it sfdbjfds. Support course Deku is a fun possibility AU for this ship as well!
IidaDeku:
Once again, nerds. But Iida and Deku are different types of nerds so that's a fun dynamic. Also the whole fight against Stain, but I think the ship kinda drops for me the further into the show we get. The scene in Season 6 was nice though.
TogaOcha:
Yeah this is just because of that one panel in the Manga. What can I say, I'm not immune to "I love your smile" and "Your the cutest girl in the world" even though I don't know the context.
And the ships I actively Dislike:
[Once again, I don't have a problem with you if you ship these, they just aren't my cup of tea]
BakuDeku:
Honestly if I watched this show when I was like 12 I probably would have liked this ship. This isn't saying only 12 year olds watch this show, this is saying that I shipped Sasuke and Naruto as a Kid and this is this generations version of that. Albeit I still ship Sasuke and Naruto, but BakuDeku has a much different dynamic. I love that Bakugo and Deku are starting to be friends, but I like their dynamic to stay that way- I don't like them as a romantic pair, but I think they're fantastic rivals. I don't think they work romantically, because for the most part what I've seen of romantic works featuring them waters down their personalities. Its hard to write them in a canon supporting way together, and I think both characters have much better options.
DekuToga:
They really haven't interacted much, and I see Toga as much more just liking Deku [and a few others, including Uraraka] from a starstruck way. She doesn't really know him, but becuase she's always been shunned for her quirk, she doesn't know how to handle her feelings. I like Toga with Uraraka because I have seen them interact more and I think there's more basis there. Also to point out the obvious reason I don't like this ship for those that know me: I don't like Yanderes. Toga is very close to that trope, and a lot of the fanart of DekuToga is Yandere related. No thanks.
Misc: Dekubowl
I don't actually ship this but I think its funny if more then one person takes interest in Deku and has a sort of rivalry over it. Its silly and fun.
OVERALL: Shipping is silly and fun and If you disagree feel free to say so, I really don't care! Its fine! As long as you aren't being rude I'd even love to chat about opinions! I might make more notes on pairings in the future, or maybe not, we'll see lmao.

WHY HINATA IS NOT A GOOD CHARACTER
Tumblr media
INTRODUCTION
I wanted to take a deeper look at Hinata’s character, considering there are a lot of claims about her out there, that she’s strong, that she’s kind, that she’s complex and relatable, that she’s the perfect woman and that she’s at least better than Sakura. I don’t really think so, and I’ll explain why. I’ll be focusing on canon, so no fillers or novels will be included in this post. I’ll say this as a warning, if you’re a fan of her character this probably won’t be something you’ll like. This will be tagged with the anti tags and put under read more so please do not complain if tumblr somehow puts this in the normal tags, it is not intentional. Also Sakura stans please don’t write lengthy comments about Sakura under this, I’m not a fan of her either and I’ll write about her later. Make your own post instead.
”HINATA IS STRONG AND THE BEST KUNOICHI”
Tumblr media
Hinata is generally really bad as a shinobi and I’m not sure where the claims that she is strong come from. Hinata's entire character revolves around her being weak. This could have been fine if she actually developed, or if she found some other area for herself, yet she's mediocre at best and a waste of panels at worst, because she never becomes good or strong at anything. She’s not only physically weak from start to finish, but she’s also the equivalent of a damsel in distress. Everytime Hinata attempts to do something, she ends up failing, getting beaten up and having to be saved. She lost to her sister who is five years younger than her, which is what marked her as a failure in her clan. She tried to fight Neji in the chunin exams and ended up coughing up blood and losing her consciousness, and Naruto had to beat Neji for her. After Kabuto heals her fully, she spends the rest of part 1 either sleeping or missing in action. Very underwhelming.
If this had been only the beginning, it would have maybe been fine, but it’s a reoccuring pattern with her character. She throws herself in front of Pain, managing to do nothing but get one-paneled and almost killed. Even at the start of the war she had to be saved by Naruto. She tried to run to Naruto and tripped over a rock. Actually, she’s so weak she got Neji killed, when he had to jump in front of her so she wouldn’t get impaled. Why is she even in the front lines when she can’t fight? Even in Naruto the Last movie she had to be saved multiple times. In Boruto the movie she is still useless and reckless, leaving her daughter’s side to help Naruto, ending up defeated and having to be healed by Sakura once again.
Tumblr media
I can’t say she’s mentally strong either. She has the personality of someone who hates conflict and tries to avoid it as best as they can, to the point of agreeing with others on everything, as Neji pointed out. Even without him saying it out loud, most of Hinata’s moments that aren’t her thinking about Naruto are her doing exactly this. This is not the personality of someone who is strong mentally. It’s the personality of someone who is too weak to have their own mind, someone who will go with the flow and is easily led and convinced. It can be dangerous the more you think about it. Hinata is also the bystander who never stands up for Naruto despite liking and admiring him. If she’s a compassionate girl, why isn’t she showing this by reaching out to Naruto and befriending him? Why doesn’t she show he’s not alone? Why is she only drawing inspiration from him? I don’t normally watch fillers, but there was one filler scene unrelated to Hinata where this girl says if you only look at the loser and do nothing, you aren’t much better than the oppressors, which probably wasn’t meant to be a call out for Hinata, but ended up being so anyway. Another thing that’s annoying is how she is berating herself often, yet doing nothing, it comes off as self-pity. Even in the Last movie, she is talking about how she must be a bad sister for knitting a scarf when her sister is in danger. Then why are you doing it and not stopping? Of course everytime this happens Naruto must cheer her up because she just can’t stop moping around and doing something herself.
Aside from all this, from the very beginning Hinata’s honor needed to be defended by Naruto because she couldn’t stand up for herself. Of course, after Naruto’s words she did stood up for a moment, and that was good, but it should have been a wake up call which altered her course. Instead, she kept doing the same she always did. If we take the Last movie into consideration, she’s still not strong enough to do anything even about her crush on Naruto. She needs genjutsu and Sakura to do the work for her. So even when it comes to the only thing she cares about 90 % of the time, which is Naruto-kun, she can’t do anything about it. That’s really sad.
”HINATA IS KIND AND SELFLESS”
Tumblr media
There’s one mistake I see people make often, and that’s assuming characters that are quiet and shy are automatically kind. I wouldn’t say Hinata is as kind as the fandom makes her out to be. She simply comes off that way because you don’t really see her have her own opinions or disagree with the other characters. Hinata’s shyness on the other hand is most of the time a fetishized quirk to appeal to certain subset of fans. Her shyness doesn’t stop her from taking exams or hanging around Shino and Kiba, or talking to characters other than Naruto. She also has enough attitude to rub Neji’s status as a house slave in his face during their match, but because she stutters Naruto-kun every five minutes she’s supposedly kind. Kindness is shown through actions, not through standing around and stuttering. For comparison, we see Ino befriend an unpopular kid like Sakura, and give her confidence. That’s an act of kindness. Did Hinata ever cared about helping the branch members in any way? No.
She's supposedly "kind" but like I mentioned before she never shows this kindness by standing up for Naruto, or reaching out to him. She simply stares at him behind a tree and draws inspiration from his suffering. The only time she can actually stand up is to selfishly confess her love and die. She even said she felt like being selfish, and like I said she knew there was nothing she could do, she was told she’d only be in the way. She came there only to confess and commit suicide. This actually reminds me of another anime where this female character, after being unable to receive a male character’s love killed herself in front of him and said ”now you’ll never forget me”.
In the end, she cares about nothing but her own hormonal urges. Hinata tried to help Naruto cheat to pass an exam at the risk of disqualifying her whole team. This is the first individual action we see her character take. Did she consider Shino and Kiba during that moment? No, she didn’t even have an inner conflict on whether she should do this, whether it’s right towards her teammates. Even Naruto considers he might get Hinata, Sasuke and Sakura all in trouble if he accepts Hinata’s offer, which is why he doesn’t do it. Then when Hinata wonders if she can cheer for Naruto during his and Kiba’s match, she thinks Kiba might get mad. It’s more about how Kiba views her rather than whether she should cheer for Kiba because they are in the same team and should support each other. During the Pain attack, she left an injured shinobi, who couldn’t move, to go to Naruto, even when said shinobi told her she would only be in Naruto’s way. She didn’t try to save people, she simply wanted to confess and act in front of Naruto. This is about a threat to the entire village, which includes her comrades and her sister and she’s thinking only about her romantic feelings towards a guy she had maybe two conversations with and who barely remembers she exists. How is she better than Sakura? War arc really was the icing on the cake that Hinata’s character is only about Naruto. We should not forget the infamous ”Naruto-kun’s hand is so big… so manly...” is that really the right time to be thirsty? When Neji just died? Shikamaru mentions that he could help out Naruto as a right-hand man and then Hinata thinks “I-I want to be by Naruto-kun’s side too.” Then there’s of course the scene where she starts running to Naruto, leaving her post and teammates, even when Naruto is a mile away and already in the hands of medical ninjas, and even that ends up her pathetically tripping over a rock. Kiba has to remind her to use her byakugan because she is too busy gushing about Naruto. Eventually her only last line is “Naruto-kun”, when everyone is put into IT. It’s like a parody by this point. She doesn’t have any concern for her sister, her father, her teammates, Kurenai or her baby. It’s just “Naruto-kun” like it always is. Even in the Last movie, she is knitting a scarf for Naruto during the mission where they’re supposed to save her sister. Who brings a scarf on a mission? Why is she thinking about her romantic gift to Naruto so much she has to take it with her on a mission which focus is saving her sister? She even looks more devastated when Toneri tores the scarf apart than she ever does for Hanabi’s sake. It’s just silly and selfish.
”HINATA IS A COMPLEX CHARACTER”
Tumblr media
Is she complex though? Her development goes from standing behind a tree looking at her crush she never talks to, to committing suicide for feelings that could never be reciprocated, to… waiting that a genjutsu and Sakura guilt trip Naruto enough for him to be with her? Like I already mentioned her character revolves entirely around Naruto, she has no hobbies or interests we know of aside from him. She has no motivations aside from being by Naruto’s side. She once had an interesting goal and backstory, but that was never fully explored, and it turned into her wanting Naruto’s attention and thinking about him. Her clan plot was irrelevant, she showed no interest in wanting to be a leader or even wanting to make things better for the branch members. It’s funny because immediately after the ending, no one cared about the Hyuuga branch and how the storyline was dropped and had no resolution. It was only when Hinata was being attacked for not showing to care did her fans start to over-analyze all the panels looking for the tiniest little clue that might hint at some changes.
It’s possible to be both shy, anxious and quiet and also to be strong, motivated and have interests and dreams. Hinata is never strong for herself, she’s only strong to be with Naruto, to die for Naruto, to motivate Naruto, to have Naruto look at her even for a moment. All the while Naruto doesn’t pay much attention to her unless she’s literally dying in front of him or she slapped him. Even when a big climax is happening, what’s on her mind is always her romantic feelings and her crush. I saw someone say if she were a male character, and she pulled this pointless sacrifice and theatrical confession in the final fight of an arc, she would’ve been universally mocked. Actually, I think even if it was Sakura who did this instead of Hinata the former would have been mocked, because their stans are unable to see the same flaws in their own fave as they see in the other girl. Naruto is a battle manga, characters are supposed to contribute to the defeat of the villain in some material way. The only reason people praise Hinata for what she did in the Pain arc is because they either pity her or because they’re men who think women killing themselves for a man is great because it boosts their ego.
Tumblr media
I also notice many Hinata fans don’t notice the vanity in their own fandom. They call Hinata “princess”, ”heiress”, ”Konoha’s first lady” and draw fanart glorifying these concepts and how it makes Hinata good, because they like the superficial status, what they don’t care is the titles are unearned. I thought Hinata’s appeal was that she’s the underdog and a loser? Or maybe her real appeal is the idea of getting everything you want without doing much in order to get it?  Another claim is that Hinata is the perfect woman, which you might see from men. This is what I might dislike the most. Men judge Hinata’s worth and whether she’s a good character based on what kind of woman they want and think is the right kind of woman. Hinata has big breasts, she’s submissive, she has no other interests than the man she likes, and she’s the only girl in her class who didn’t go for the popular guy. Many men hate Sakura, Ino and Karin for being fangirls but praise Hinata for being a fangirl. Basically to them if a character is a fangirl of the wrong guy, she’s a stupid slut. If she fangirls their self insert, she’s wife material and the ideal woman. If Sakura has to be saved, she’s useless. If Hinata tries to kill herself for Naruto, she’s ”so kind”. Rin is a one-dimensional character, but Hinata saying Naruto-kun for the 50th time is depth. Hinata is also claimed to be better than the other girls because she had more kids and thus is more ”fertile”. It’s like feminism never happened and we are back to the 16th century. Why are we judging women’s worth on how many kids they have and how much they can please a man?
Tumblr media
I could also talk about how Studio Pierrot turned Hinata into a hentai bait for otakus, which also plays a part in her popularity, but I don’t think it’s necessary, so I will just offer this picture which speaks for itself.
END NOTE
Hinata is simply just a sexist stereotype, a shadow of a real woman, with not much depth, and who is certainly not better than Sakura either. Both of them are fangirls whose characters revolve around men. It’s wild to me how there are women who genuinely act like one must be a misogynist if they reject Hinata’s superficial, one-dimensional and boy crazy character. Her character itself is misogynist for crying out loud. And honestly, what does it say when even the creator himself assumes that Hinata is someone’s favorite character because he must like big boobs?

Sannin headcanons and thoughts
The last thing I would like to post for the sannin week. It is still 24.04 here! :D @sannin-central
This is long. Spoiler alert. Mostly Orochimaru, some Tsunade, a little of Jiraiya (because his story is pretty clear and spoken and idk what I can add). Also I recommend to read this meta about Orochimaru, it has influenced me a lot and has some good points. Sorry for any posible grammar mistakes. Also I really should put here a lot of references to the manga or anime but it was something that was piling up for a year and I'm soooooooo lazy. After all, those are just headcanons. Also: Im not excusing Oro's bad stuff here, Im trying to understand the reasons.
Ive already posted some hcs, here, here and here.
Tumblr media
1. First if all, the chronology pic of sannin lifetime based on the info i found on naruto wiki and also some statements about wars from this post. It was tough considering what a mess naruto’s chronology is.
2. Sannin story shows what it cost to be a legend. They're like Team 7 but more realistic. Tsunade literally carried the war but left with nothing and developed a ptsd and have problems to just live on. Also anger control issues. I think she can be pretty bossy and stubborn which is not always nice. Jiraiya is the hero of the day but also very idealistic and can ignore some important details in the real word whether its the fight (he always injured during flashbacks maybe because each time he took too much to handle and on the one hand it's heroistic but on the other is a mistake that can lead your team to situations like in that Iwa cave) or your friends issues (I bet he saw what's going on but thought it's fine until Oro actually got red handed and left). He lives in his world and may have problems to get out to see it through someone else's shoes. As for Orochimaru, it seems like he was a normal guy for 20+ years (I mean, he didn't do crazy criminal shit and had something good in him and it was stated somewhere that it was his teammates influence. It is obvious they considered him as a friend, I don't thinks it was for nothing) but we mostly know his darkest side. Despite being a moster he is a human that have empathy and some ordinary human traits (man just decorates every bit of an environment he is in lol).
3. Tsunade was the leader of team Hiruzen.
4. Tsunade sometimes hit Jiraiya for some stupid things he did or said but never touches Orochimaru even if he did something same. Jiraiya complained about it once and almost got another hit.
5. Jiraiya had problematic parents that didn't care about him much and a lot of time he was wandering in the streets.
6. Judging by the look of Oro bangs and hair, he sometimes cut it off. A stress relief huh? And the fact that he doesn't do it now in Boruto..
7. It was shown that Tsunade and Orochimaru was acknowledged before they become a team. Maybe they did just before, or maybe some longer time before. I prefer the second option and hc that they met because both had no real friends - Orochimaru seemed weird and scary for everyone and Tsunade was Senju so everyone wanted to hang out with her but didn't really care. They weren't seen as what they were - people put the labels on them. But they didn't care about each other's labels and actually saw each other in true lights.
8. Tsunade knew it was an accident and it's not right but still she blamed Orochimaru for Nawaki's death for some time. It was something that seriously damaged their friendship and the team. Orochimaru was mad but also guilty, after all, he was responsible at least as a shinobi since Nawaki was under his watch. So he started to act cold and emotionless and was trying to distance himself from his teammates.
9. Jiraiya was in Ame while Dan died.
10. The whole his orphans mission was a bit irresponsible tbh. They already fought Hanzo and as he stated the conflict between Konoha and Ame is going to an end with Konoha's win. It's weird to stay here for three years in the middle of the war while there were other lands to fight. He left his teammates for some idea. Maybe that caused another crack in their team friendship.
11. If Tsunade would have find a way to live on with her trauma and follow the will of fire and stuff it would affect Orochimaru as well just as her grief affected him. It's like he would get an example that you can live on with this pain. So death isn't above human capability and we are not just the slaves of mortality (sounds stupid but i dont know how else to describe sorry). But as we know what he actually saw is that it broke her crucially to the point she couldnt be herself again. And so the death is above everything.
12. Oro wasn’t just acting as a cold pragmatic bitch in that cave but also tried to save Tsunade. Jiraiya knew it and that’s why he showed this sign to him like "I see what youre doing here" and that stunned Oro because he would prefer to look rather like a cold pragmatic bitch hehe
13. Just a thought. People in the village probably treated Oro as a foreigner or just wouldnt accept him because he looked so differently and had a weird attitude. That's why he sometimes didn't feel that Konoha is his home. After the wars where people were treated as means and tools, even the children, he himself developed this view on people - he dehumanized them and used as the means to his goals, just as his village did. Funny thing some people were straightly dehumanizing him too like Ibiki thought that he was a demon (tho he was a child). And he probably weren't the only one. Anyways the point is that it's logical that Orochimaru don't care about anybody but some few people, he's the product of his era. He's like Naruto that would chose the hatred way. But naruto had some good and understanding people around him and.. Orochimaru had them too, but match how Iruka treated Naruto and this Hiruzen's "I sAw tHe mAliCe in This cHiLd fRoM tHe BegGinNinG". And oro didn't even have a big ass evil fox in him. sry i hate hiruzen
ANYWAYS the moral of the story is not "go criminal if they hurt you" but always treat people like people. Waving my hand to Kant.
14. The reason why Orochimaru didn't pick some good morals to stick with through the hard times no matter what (like, idk, Jiraiya or Naruto) is because 1) I think he is/was pretty depending on people around him 2) the war fucked him and his friends up too much (Nawaki incident + Tsunade) 3) twisted addictions (though I don't think he's that sadistic, we never saw him torturing randoms just for fun, it was always some science experimental shit. He tends to get fun out of cruelty only when it's personal) that maybe developed as a way to sublimate anger and sadness caused by his parents loss (that's what they share with sasuke - unlicke naruto, they knew their parents and it's other kind of pain. Sasuke developed a revenge issue and Orochimaru - cruelty pleasure which... is kinda the same but less epic and more occasional lol).
15. Speaking of that, Orochimaru cared for Sasuke because he saw himself in him.
16. Oro hold grudges against Hiruzen for not choosing him to be Hokage not only because he was ambitious and/or egoistic, but also because Hiruzen was some kind of a father figure for him and his approval was important tho i doubt he was aware of that. He also probably could tell that Hiruzen was suspicios about him when he was a child and that led to many conflicts and was hurting as well.
17. Tsunade knew things weren't pretty with Orochimaru after the wars but she never expected them to be this bad. During the week that she was given in her arc she thought not only about how much she wants to see Nawaki and Dan again despite how wrong would it be but also was trying to bury all the good memories she had left of Orochimaru so it would be easier to kill him.
18. She poisoned Jiraiya exactly because she knew he would not let her do it. Jiraiya was always hesitant to kill and inclined to forgiveness, while Tsunade, as mentioned by Orochimaru, could be merciless (so much so that he was not surprised when Kabuto suggested that she wanted to use Jira for Edo Tensei).
19. That was one of her traits that scared Jiraiya and fascinated Orochimaru.
20. Remember how Oro grabbed Jiraiya's neck when the latter was trying to cover with hair jutsu? On the snake, in Tsnade's arc. Orochimaru could have easily kill Jiraiya by pulling the sword out of the mouth (arteries are right there) but he didn't. As well as he could kill Tsunade when she was still shaking - just aim for the neck or the heart. Instead, he just injured her lung and kicked her which is not a big deal for the kind of shinoby like her at all.. Also he helped Anko not accidentally kill herself but it would be way much profitable to let her do it. "Orochimaru has no feelings".
21. The reason he suddenly wanted to kill Tsunade instead of forcing her to heal his arms as it was planned (which is weird since it will not going to get him heals and he kinda said that he wouldn't want to kill her just minutes ago) is that not only she refused to help him (he thought he could work it out) but she also prefered the village over him (from his point of view). Out if everyone she was the closest to being able to understand him since the village caused her painful losses too but nevertheless she agreed to be on it's side.
22. He wasn't fighting her back in the end partly because he thought he deserved that. Somewhere deep inside hahah.
23. Tsunade got a fear to develop deep bonds so they probably weren't very close with Shizune (also the way she knocked her down in this hotel.. oh).
24. Orochimaru will be here when she'll die.
25. Orochimaru's eng dub to Tsunade: "I often wondered what it would be like to ring that pretty neck yours". No comments.
26. Orochimaru is either bi/pan or ace. Anything or nothing lmao
27. Hiruzen knew about at least some of the Oro’s illegal experiments and was okay just as he was okay with the Foundation all the time. Because it’s useful. Then he has discovered he went too far OR he knew everything and oro just became too inconvenient because of his methods. The way Orochimaru tells Sasuke about reasons they are well treated as the criminals is based on in his experience with Hiruzen.
28. As you may know the lyrics in Orochimaru’s music theme goes “don’t talk with the silence of the heart”. It was taken from one Indian song that also had lines like “don’t question life too much”, ”pain arose somewhere in the chest”, “don’t speak to the wounds of the heart”. Though I’m not sure 100% because I was translating it with some hindi dictionary with like zero knowledge of hindi
29. I like to think that this “silence of the heart” theme and the fact that he called his village a hidden sound village are somehow connected. The hidden sound is the possible explanation of all things waiting to be listened to but the truth is silent and you know it deep in your heart and it bothers you. The world is silent just like the life is meaningless but people can only hear. *Sigh* anyways
30. Orochimaru’s journey is the one about accepting death. When he saw Karin released her chains while was trying to get to Sasuke he understood that the death is a part of human’s strength.
Can’t wait to feel that everything I wrote is wrong or not enough or stupid and obvious lol. Anyways, it’s something that I wanted to share until I move to some other fandom.

Hiiii so good to hear from you again! I wanted to ask for a Shikamaru x FemNaru one shot in like a romance/smut maybe? 🥺 A “naruto finally realizes Shikamaru might not be as lazy as everyone thinks” I Hope that makes sense ❤️❤️
Hiii ! ^0^
I’m sooo sorry it took me forever to answer you. Here is a short OS; I had started by writing one that I was not very proud of and it was getting long, so I rewrote something else instead, but well, it doesn’t have any smut *cough* and I think that I’m a bit far from what you had asked. There is still some fluff though. *hides* I hope you’ll still enjoy this tiny bit! *crosses fingers*.
***
Naruto stretched her arms up in the sky with a happy grin on her face. “Haaaah, it’s been so long since I didn’t come here!”
The last time she had set foot in Nami no Kuni was seven years ago, during her first mission outside the village with her team. Today, she was returning on her own accord, to carry out a project that had been on her mind for a while now.
Since the end of the war, Naruto had been planning to create an association for orphans across the nations, with the help of all of Team 7. They had first set up a system in Konoha, since the Orphan System that existed until then was chaotic; both she and Sasuke had paid the price. Sakura took care of the health and medical management, Sasuke traveled and brought new ideas from his observations, and Naruto took care of the maintenance on site by traveling as well. Kakashi initially helped with the administrative side and supervision, but following his election as Hokage – Kakashi-sensei. Hokage! Before her! –, he had handed over the reins to Captain Yamato. As for Sai, he was mainly in charge of the orphanage in Konoha, and managed the finances and agreements with the Hokage.
All in all, her team was doing a real team job now, and she was happy that they could all work together and stay in touch like this.
Of course, she had dragged all of her friends to help out in their own way as well, or to sponsor the association when their situation allowed them to. Kiba frequently brought dogs to the Konoha orphanage to entertain the children, Choji delivered leftover food from his family's restaurants, Ino counselled Sakura in matters of child psychology, and so everyone contributed in their own way.
Now that they were starting to open new facilities outside of the Fire Nation, Naruto needed to travel more frequently. Their first contribution being in Nami no Kuni, as it was a country that frequently required help from Konoha, and they had suffered greatly over the past few years; though they were beginning to be independent and regain their wealth.
For this mission, she was in the company of Shikamaru, who was the most competent diplomat she knew and could easily help her comply with the laws between the villages that she had not yet memorized. (It was not without reason that she had chosen him as her advisor; both as a future Hokage and in her everyday life.)
Since they'd had to leave the village quite late due to last minute paperwork she had to work on as the Hokage's apprentice, not only had she not had time to go over what she had intended to cover, but they'd also had to make a stopover halfway between their village and the Land of Waves where they'd be sleeping under the stars.
Settled by a fire, Naruto had pulled out all the documents she had to memorize by the next day, while Shikamaru stargazed, lying beside her.
Well, she wasn't fooling herself, she'd never remember all of it; if she managed to memorize five sentences, no one would be able to reach her level of awesomeness. She only had to retain the main ideas, and in the worst case scenario, she would improvise. Especially since Tazuna and Inari would also be there; she didn't have anything to worry about.
When she began to read through the material at hand, her concentration was at its peak. Plus, the memorization techniques that Kakashi-sensei and Shikamaru had taught her were real helpful!
However, she felt her attention waver rather quickly.
In order to erect a building on foreign land, blah blah blah, agreements to be fulfilled with distant relatives of the orphans, blah blah blah, agreement with nearby villages and homes, blah blah blah… She just wanted to help take care of orphans. Why did they always have to complicate everything? Urgh, politics.
As her brain began to warm up, a cool sensation invaded her body and calmed her thoughts. Glancing at Shikamaru, who had crossed his arms behind his head and wasn't taking his eyes off the sky, she noticed that his shadow had expanded to embrace her.
Over the past year, Naruto had become interested in ninshū, the art of creation that connected chakra users through their spiritual energy. As soon as she had understood how it worked, she had obviously passed on her knowledge to her friends who were interested in such an ancient technique; from a time before the corruption of chakra, according to the Rikudō Sennin.
Shikamaru had been one of the first people to understand how to use ninshū, his Yang affinity making it easy for him. He was now applying it to his shadow, which could feel the presence of living beings around him; and in return, he could make others feel his calm and relaxing presence by encircling them with it.
Being able to connect spiritually opened a whole new palette of sensations for them.
As a result, Shikamaru, who rarely expressed his emotions, had found a new way to make Naruto aware his feelings, and he used it without restraint whenever he had the opportunity, with subtlety and discretion, in his usual laid-back attitude.
A smile spread across Naruto's face.
They hadn't been dating for very long, but she had always felt comfortable and at peace in his company.
“Don’t you think you should review all this stuff with me?” She questioned him as she simulated a pout. Come on, she couldn’t be the only one to… to be reading.
“What for?” he asked rhetorically. “You already have your own plans for the orphanage, and if you have any logistic issues, I’ll fill in for you.”
Naruto clicked her tongue and kicked his leg with her foot. “You know, an implementation in a foreign country’s dealt differently from mere political discussions and arrangements.” (Her vocabulary had improved tremendously since the beginning of her Hokage training. She sounded like a badass and knowledgeable adult now.) “There’s much more to it, -ttebayo!" (Her good old vocabulary was still there though.)
“I know,” he replied as he glanced at her from the corner of his eye.
“…”
What did he mean? What was it with that tone? He didn’t…?
“Don’t tell me you’ve reviewed all the documentation before me?”
The small smirk that graced his lips was answer enough.
“No way! When?! You were as busy as me all day long!”
“You took a nap in the morning.”
“For thirty minutes!”
“Those were enough.”
“You…!”
She couldn’t believe him. How did he even find the energy? And the focus?! Ugh, brains. It was beyond her.
“So you’ve read and understood all of it?”
“Uh-uh.”
Naruto put her hand over her heart and the other over her forehead, feigning a sudden headache. “Woah, how can you do that, I’m feeling sick just thinking about all these words.”
His smile broadened despite himself, and he shook his head in amusement. “You'll have to get used to it, when you're Hokage.”
Naruto blinked at the remark. “Absolutely not.” She leaned over him, before putting an arm under his neck and hugging him tightly, to the point where he was mildly disturbed in his sky-watching.
Shikamaru let out a surprised shriek at her action. “Wha- Naruto, you’re obstructing the view.”
“I’m the most beautiful view you can ever hope to see,” she corrected with delight.
He opened his mouth to answer, but knowing what was good for him, he immediately closed it. His lips twitched as he held back an amused smile. Teheheh, he couldn't resist her.
She grinned in response and planted a soft kiss on the corner of his lips. “When I’m Hokage, you’ll be doing the paperwork thing. I’ll take care of the talk and friendship part.”
Shikamaru rolled his eyes and ran his hand through Naruto's hair, laughing at her mannerisms. “I’m not sure that’s how it’s supposed to work.”
“But since you’re the best advisor, we can rewrite the rules of how stuff is supposed to work,” she chirped, resting her head on Shikamaru's shoulder and lying down beside him as she hugged him. “Rules were made by humans anyway. It shouldn’t be too troublesome if cooler humans like us changed them for the better once in a while.”
He leaned his head closer to hers. “You’re not just talking about the Hokage’s paperwork, are you?”
A cheery laugh escaped her and she looked up at him with a huge smile. “Eh, probably not. You’re still in, right?”
With her body so close to his, and her ear resting against him, she could sense his heartbeat escalate, and she noticed the soft gaze he was suddenly throwing her way.
She loved it when he looked at her like this. Like… like she was awesome.
“I guess I am.”
She knew it.
The more time she spent with Shikamaru, the more she realized that when it truly mattered, he was ready to go far and beyond to help her achieve her goals.
That was another reason why he was the best counselor and partner she could have chosen, after all.

The Bomb Expert | Sasuke Uchiha x chubby!Reader | 1/?
A/n: Reader summons rats to dismantle and place bombs. She and Sasuke were close friends up until he left for Orochimaru. One day, Sasuke comes back to ask her to join his team to kill Itachi. Sorry if Sasuke is a bit ooc in this. I suck at writing him so I'm trying to write him more so I can get it.
Tw: Female pronoun reader, animal death (old age)
Tumblr media
--
(Y/n) sniffled softly as she sat at the small grave. Her male rat, Gozaburo had died. Her parents were off on a mission when it happened and they wouldn't be back until she was going to start the chunin exams started, so here she was in the field burying the large rat. It wasn't the first time a rat had died of old age, it wasn't new but it was always heart breaking. The ninja rats were her family. It was sad, she hoped he would be there for her to help her through the exams but that didn't seem possible. She sniffled again, placing a flower down once he was buried and stood up.
Sasuke had originally came to this field to train and get away from Naruto and Sakura but instead he found a young slightly plump girl around his age looking quite sad. She looked familiar. Oh right, she was on team 8. He stared at her a moment thinking about leaving and finding somewhere else to go but then he saw the tears. He sighed internally before speaking.
"Are you okay...?" She looked up, shocked that anyone was there. She thought this area was going to be secluded but here was the famous last of the Uchihas watching her cry over a rat. He would probably think she was ridiculous. His whole clan was killed. "You'd think it was stupid... It's not a big deal... Really." Sasuke rolled his eyes. "What is it?" "One of my older ninja rats passed. That's all." "..." He didn't say anything. "I know it's not that big a deal." Sasuke sighed. "You cared about him. He was one of your partners."
"Yeah..."
"It's not that stupid."
"But--" he shook his head stopping her from mentioning his struggles. "How did he die?" "He was old for a rat." She said softly. "I see." He responds. "You want to come train with me?" He didn't know why he asked her that. Maybe because he understood her feelings, even if it was just a rat.
--
Somehow Sasuke developed a friendship with the young kunochi. He was impressed by her, even if she wasn't the best in hand to hand, she was fantastic at tactile explosives. Hell, she was even amazing a dismantling complex bombs. He found himself often seeking her out when he was annoyed by Naruto or his many fan girls.
She was calm and didn't obsess over him. It was nice. He enjoyed visiting her place, watching her care for her partners was a peaceful environment.
When he was marked by Orochimaru and he was trying to decide what he was going to do she was the only one he would stay for.
Did he fall for her? That was ridiculous. He would miss her.
That's why he snuck into her window before he left. (Y/n) was shocked to see him there so late. "Sasuke?" "I'm going with him."
Her face scrunched, she was getting ready for bed and damn she looked cute looking at him like that.
"With Orochimaru... I need to get stronger. I need to kill Itachi." He said smoothly. "I just needed to see you before I left." Maybe he did fall for her but he couldn't. He wouldn't. Not until Itachi was dead.
She gave him a look. One that he knew everyone would give him. She was going to stop him. "If that's what you think is right." He looked up at her in surprise. He was sure she would tell him not to go. "Sasuke... This is your path to walk just know I will be here if you need me for anything."
He wanted to kiss her. But he didn't. He just left. That was the last time she would see him, at least for the next three years.
-- 3 years later
"How was he?" Sakura and Naruto had returned from their mission not long ago. Sakura and (Y/n) decided to have some time together. Sakura liked (Y/n) though something in her told her that Sasuke would pick her before he'd pick Sakura.
(Y/n) handed a grilled veggie to a small rat cuddling against her neck. She took a bit of her own food as she waited for her response. "He was... Different. Stronger." She sipped her tea sadly. "I see." Was the rat handlers response. In all honesty, Sasuke looked disappointed in her opinion when he saw her. He was definitely hoping she would come for him, at least that is what her inner Sakura was screaming.
"Next time... You should come with us." She said. "Maybe you could convince him to come back. He always liked you..." (Y/n) shook her head. "I think he'll come back when he's ready." Sakura looked at her in surprise. "What?"
"Sasuke is stubborn... Just like Naruto. They need to come to their own conclusions. It's why I didn't try to stop him." Sakura instantly froze.
"You had the opportunity to stop him?" She was hurt, the small rat hid quickly into her master's shirt knowing Sakura's rage. "Kind of. He wouldn't have stayed for me..."
"It kills me to say this, (Y/n) but... I think he would have."
-- Orochimaru's "death"
(Y/n) had not expected this.
Not ever. She was in a town in the land of fire that had a specific shop with her rats favorite treat. It's the only one a certain rat would take and she goes on a journey often to be sure she always had it at home. Some would say she spoils her ninja rats but she didn't mind... But she never expected to see him.
"(Y/n)." She froze when she heard his voice. It only changed slightly but she could find that voice anywhere. Her plush form turned quickly, Sasuke's heart skipped a beat when their eyes met. "Sasuke..." She grew into herself. Even if she was a bit on the fatter side, it suited her.
There where nights where he dreamed of her but he had no idea how beautiful she would be once he saw her again. She would be a distraction but her skills and intelligence would be useful.
"Wh--...? Did you...?"
"We can catch up later." He said coldly. "I have been waiting to see you here."
"What...?" She was shocked. "Why? Why didn't you just come to my house I haven't..." It was clear she was rambling, he simply shook his head to get her to stop. "I can't go back there... I just need to talk to you."
"Okay."
She purchased her items and walked out with him.
"I am putting together a team to take down Itachi."
"And...?"
"Your skills would work well for me."
"I see."
She adjusted the bag in her hand, without thinking Sasuke took it from her, as if he were some kind of lover of hers. What an idea...?
No. Not yet.
"So you want me to abandon the village for you."
"You don't hav--"
"Can I think about it?"
Sasuke looked her over, hiding any of his emotions on his face.
"Three days. Meet me at the Great Naruto Bridge. I am going to be there. If you don't show up by sunset I'll assume you won't do it."
--
It was that last day. It was hard to choose. If she left maybe he would come back after he reached his goals? Maybe... Just maybe.
She couldn't tell anyone. She didn't want to risk becoming a spy and Sasuke finding out. It would only push him away. The sun was still high. If she left now she would just barely make it.
She looked at her rats and sighed. There was no choice. She had to help him if she ever wanted him to come back with her.
With shocking speed she grabbed her clothes and a bit of equipment, as well as food for her summons. Out the door she went to make it to the great Naruto Bridge, hoping not to draw attention.
She told the two keeping watch at the gate she was leaving for more rat treats due to an unfortunate accident. (Y/n) had a feeling she wasn't the best liar. Hopefully it wouldn't draw to much attention. That was one part of her journey that didn't need to be worried about for the moment.
Sasuke waited.
In fact sunset was already falling upon the bridge. "It's sunset." Suigetsu said boredly, he really wanted to get that sword. Sasuke looked at him with an annoyed expression. Suigetsu shrugged a bit.
Sasuke turned to leave but stopped when he heard his name. "Sasuke... Sorry I'm late."
"That's her?" The shark like male said in surprise. "She doesn't look that impressive."
Sasuke glared at him in annoyance. "Tsk." Somehow he was personally offended that he would say something like that about her.
"Let's just go. We still have more members to collect."

Writing Romance: Opposites Attract
Tumblr media
One of the most widespread among romantic tropes is opposites attract, and with good reason. When a couple are opposites, they’re meant to be one of a few things to each other: 1. An inverse reflection of each other. 2. Compliment each other 3. Cover each other’s shortcomings
In a sense, a good Opposites Attract serves to turn two incomplete people into one solid force. If they’re a battle couple, they’ll tend to fight very well together, often balancing force and finesse, melee and ranged, or physical and magical abilities. If the show or book has a lot of time dedicated to foils and character moments, they are more likely to be the ones that each other lean on, since their opposing characters makes them interesting to react off one another. Their roles, story arcs, and backstories tend to run opposite or parallel to one another depending on the series. If one character’s arc is to mature and become more responsible, likely their partner’s arc might be to learn to loosen up and have fun, learn to trust people, or to face a trauma in their past that made them so mature at a young age.
In terms of design, opposites attract partners tend to be inverse in color schemes. Light and dark hair or eyes, warm and cool color schemes, clashing or complimentary fashion styles, etc. The degree in opposition also varies. Some opposites attract look very similar with only a slight difference, indicating that something small is what set them on different paths in life but are otherwise very similar, almost as two sides of the same coin. Other couples are stark contrasts with virtually nothing in common to really emphasize their differences so that they can better make each other whole, as shown very literally through the character of Garnet in Steven Universe.
Tumblr media
Femme and Butch
While typically, you’re mostly going to see this in femmeslash/yuri pairings, this dynamic is actually fairly universal. This divide focuses on a pairing where each couple reflects the values of masculinity and femininity. Although mostly used as lesbian terms, a femme and butch pairing can also be gay or heterosexual. A fashion-loving twink who cries during romantic movies dating a jock who likes sports and drinks beer is still an example of Femme and Butch. Heterosexual is rather obvious, but can also be inversed, with a tough, assertive woman partnered with a sweet, sensitive man, such as Calhoun and Felix in Wreck-It Ralph. A Femme and Butch pairing doesn’t need to check off every box on this list of traits, but these traits tend to be common in these types of relationships.
Tumblr media
Brains and Brawn
Also known as Jock and Nerd, this romantic dynamic prioritizes the usefulness of both intelligence and brute strength. Another variation is Book Smarts vs Street Smarts. The Brains will be good at doing research, organizing, and will tend to fight more strategically while the Brawn is primarily going to be good at fighting and likely protecting the Brains from serious harm. Princess and Bodyguard is another possible example of this dynamic, albeit a little less directly.
Tumblr media
Hot and Cold
Hot or Warm characters tend to be friendly, outgoing, upbeat, loudmouthed, temperamental, boisterous, and battle-ready. Cold or Cool personalities tend to be shy, calm, quiet, logical, reserved, serious, and emotionally withdrawn. However, while these extreme opposites of hot-head and cold-shoulder balance each other out, it’s worth discussing same heat relationships. Kiribaku is an example of a Hot/Warm relationship, as Bakugou Katsuki is an angry little spitfire with an aggressive streak, while Kirishima Eijirou is a happy-go-lucky sweetheart with a good attitude. This is sort of the same concept, just that both boys are on the warm side of the spectrum, with Kirishima being the cooler counter to Bakugou’s temperamental hot-head. This also works inversely, as the ship Tododeku is a Cold/Cool relationship. Midoriya is a shy, but upbeat young man who tends not to draw too much attention to himself, while Todoroki is stoic, logical, and a bit dense socially. In this case, Midoriya is Cool while Todoriki is Cold, with Midoriya serving as the “Hot” aspect of their relationship as the more friendly and outgoing of the two.
Tumblr media
Light and Shadow
This archetype is often used as a “opposite sides of the same coin” format, where the characters serve as foils to one another. In Teen Titans, Raven’s powers are dark and demonic, while Starfire’s are bright and extraterrestrial. Both girls get their powers from their emotions, but where Starfire revels in her emotions to make her powerful, Raven must suppress her emotions to retain control of her powers. As the only two girls, they stick out as the obvious foils of the group. Many times, when this trope appears, it’s in the form of Classic Paragon Hero vs Cynical Anti-Hero. Superman and Batman are a great example. Superman is a boyscout token good guy, while Batman is a brooding loner. One is the hope for justice and goodness to always triumph while the other acknowledges that people are flawed, and maybe not everyone deserves to be saved. Naruto is interesting because he has two dark reflections. The first is Sasuke. While Naruto is the golden-haired idealist who befriends villains almost as often as Steven Universe, Sasuke is a dark counter consumed by a thirst for vengeance and the power to exact it. Naruto’s other dark counter however is Gaara. Both are Jinchuriki, but whereas Naruto eventually found friends and love in his fellow genin, Gaara was very much still alone when he met Naruto, reflecting what Naruto could have become without that love and support in this life.
Tumblr media
Protagonist and Rival
Another case of “two sides of the same coin”, most anime protagonists and their rival tend to either have very similar backstories, very similar motivations, or very similar personalities, if not some combination of the three. Both Naruto and Sasuke were abandoned in the world at a young age with the Hokage looking out for them from afar. Naruto started off having nobody, and was always reaching out hoping to connect with anyone. Meanwhile, Sasuke started with a family and lost it, and decided to keep everyone at arm’s length and isolate himself further. Rin Okumura and Ryuji Suguro are practically the same person. Both lost their families and homes due to Satan, both are strong-willed loudmouthed tough guys with a knack for leadership, and both share the goal of killing Satan. Natsu Dragneel is immature and battle-ready, but while Grey Fullbuster at least pretends to be above it, he’ll jump into a fight with Natsu practically unprompted. The main appeal of the anime protagonist and his rival is that they push each other to succeed, often coming from very similar roots, but where they end up is entirely up to the effort they put in and the path they choose to take. They both refuse to lose to each other, and that propells them to constantly want to out-do each other.
Tumblr media
Sweet and Sour
My best friend and I are polar opposites in this sense. When we met, she was far too trusting, submissive, and far too forgiving. Meanwhile, I was a lot more cynical, mean-spirited, and unfortunately, a little more closed-minded than I’d like to admit. After five years of friendship, my friend is far more assertive, has a lot more confidence in herself, is a lot better at handling criticism, and rather than just submitting in an argument, she now has the nerve to get in someone’s face and make her point heard. Because of her, I’ve become less stand-offish, more patient and polite, less of a control freak, more aware of valuing other people’s emotions, and more tolerant of a group I hadn’t realized I’d been intolerant toward. We saw the world in such distinctly different ways that we have managed to rub off on each other, and now we’re both such stronger and more complete people for having known each other.
Tumblr media
Serious and Goofball
A classic comedy duo, the comedian and the straight man. The Goofball character tends to be immature, a knucklehead, a jokester, and comes off as a bit inexperienced. Meanwhile, the Serious character tends to be mature, responsible, disciplined, but comes off as a bit aloof. The Goofball reminds the Serious character to have a little fun every once in a while, while the Serious character reins in the Goofball before they hurt themselves or somebody else.

Hero and Sidekick
The hero has their act together and the sidekick is just doing their best. This happens a lot in Action movies where the handsome tough guy and the hapless damsel (who he kidnaps a little too often for my liking) is just kind of along for the ride. The two live in entirely different worlds. Sometimes this comes in the variant of Starlet and Manager where one in the relationship takes center stage while the other is content to help them run their life, promote their career, and help them. Another variation is Superstar and Random Extra, wherein one person leads a very visible life in the public eye being adored by millions of fans while their partner works 9-5 in an office dealing with insurance claims. Although they coe from very different worlds and lead very different lives, that doesn’t mean they still haven’t found love in an unlikely place. Often, the reason the hero or big shot loves this random nobody is because they fell in love with them before they ever became famous, or they didn’t know/care who the celebrity was and just liked them as a person without interest in using their celebrity to climb the social ladder.

Loud and Quiet
She’s quirky, outgoing, bubbly, energetic, and talkative. Too talkative. She never shuts up. He’s quiet, simple, down-to-earth, and calm. Too Calm. He never gets excited. This pairing works to push and pull each other until they’ve harmonized. The Quiet one will be pulled out of their shell and learn to be more open and talkative, while the Loud one will learn to think before they act. This couple is divided along lines of Introversion and Extroversion, and together can navigate the anxiety-triggering unease of a social gathering, and finding joy and pleasure in just enjoying each other’s company without needing to fill the silence with pointless chatter.
Tumblr media
To be fair, many Opposites Attract couples will fit into more than one of these archetypes, and there’s probably more I didn’t list. But if you’re wanting to create a couple that balances each other out, I hope you find this helpful to you in your writing.

Uchiha weddings were nothing, if not extravagant and over the top, you should know, you have had one for yourself.
Standing beside your husband of three years, the prodigy, Itachi Uchiha, you couldn't have been happier. Sasuke was getting married and you and Itachi had the most triumphant grins on your faces, both beaming gleefully.
You and Itachi had been childhood bestfriends but didn't start dating dating until late teen years. So naturally Sasuke had been an important person in your life, an amazing boy whom you had watched grow up.
The wedding had been a blast, everyone enjoying themselves to the fullest. Asuma and Kurenai were dancing along with their son in a group with Kakashi and Gai. Kakashi drunk dancing was really a sight for sore eyes.
Genma was at the bar, really vibing with one of Sakura's distant aunts while Iruka was being paired up with one of Hinata's quiet aunts by Naruto.
Minato and Kushina were standing alongside Fugake and Mikoto drinking champagne and feeling proud.Smiles of genuine happiness were on each of their faces as they felt their life goals had been achieved.
Of course all the boys were dancing alongside the Jounins' group with Sasuke in between surrounded by a wild Naruto, drunk Kiba, flustered Lee and other friends of the like.
The girls were in their own group with the bride in between surrounded by perfectionist Ino, jovial Tenten, inebriated Temari, bewildered Hinata and likewise. Ino kept straightening the flowers in the newlywed girl's hair.
This was all you could ever ask for someone as important to you as Sasuke. You, someone who never cried, almost shed a tear when Sauske said his vows. The fact he found love in his life made you really grateful to God.
After all the guest tired themselves out by uncoordinated and off beat dancing, it was time for the best man's speech or in this case, best men.
Naruto and Itachi were the two best men as they both mean the world to Sasuke. His best friend and his elder brother.
With a champagne flute in hand, Naruto started, "Putting our rivalry aside for one day, I would go so far as to call you-, this is only a once in a lifetime privilege remember Teme," He referred to Sasuke getting off track his speech, "-my best friend. Who would have thought you would get married? Howbeit to a girl?"
Everybody laughed, silently agreeing with Naruto. The atmosphere of the wedding hall was bright, beautiful and cheery. The exuberant and buoyant gathering listened with real enthusiasm.
"I don't have anything against you marrying a guy, honestly because all of us expected you to, after you broke a lot of poor girls' hearts."
Sasuke seemed really shocked at this, even his mouth fell open with widened eyes while everyone once again silently agreed. Sasuke's shock told you that he actually had never heard about this rumor before.
God, he was a really oblivious kid.
"I know, Dobe," Naruto said referring to Sasuke's surprised expression, "I was that shocked too, when I came to know they shipped you with me nonetheless, because that was something even I wasn't aware of." Naruto and Sauke both made disgusted faces, as if on cue. The look of terror on Sasuke’s face might have led people to believe it was the most sinister thought ever.
But they did look cute together.
"But I guess they say, you aren't really best friends if they don't confuse you as homosexuals." Naruto let out a beaming grin while Sasuke gave a crooked smile. Everyone inwardly cooed at the pure expressions.
"However, there is one female I remember you crushing on, the only one in the entirety of our lives."
Sasuke had a look of horror on this face as he shook his head 'no' immediately, trying to get Naruto to shut up, specks of red in his eyes as he threatened to activate his 'Sharingan'.
"I remember you being all flustered and look at (Y/N) with heart eyes.”
Naruto's grin widened, showing his pearly whites, clearly content with Sasuke's reaction.
Your name caught you off-guard and you were in absolute shock. People turned around to give you a not-so-subtle glance but you didn’t care. You always thought Sasuke was a shy and quiet kid who liked to keep to himself. Mikoto let out a cheer while Fugaku smiled. Itachi let out a deep-throated chuckle from beside you which caused you to turn to him, “You knew about this?”
He silently nodded with a smile on his face and you carried on, “And never even mentioned it to me? Would it have killed you to do so?”
“It wasn’t any of my business. Also, it was pretty funny.”
You lightly hit his arm and retorted, “Oh God, I don’t even know who I got married to!”
A smile still broke out on your face as you turned to Naruto once again.
“I remember once Kiba and I were hanging out and we heard a really high pitched shriek from the forest. We ran all the way inside thinking someone was in danger but it turned out to be Sasuke squealing beacuse it was (Y/N)’s birthday and she gave him a kiss on the cheek for some gift he gave her. I swear our ears started bleeding. He was so red that we thought all the tomatoes he ate finally caught up to him.”
You blinked twice, your expression blank. Then a coy smile made its way to your face. You looked over to find Sasuke as red as a cherry, not even meeting your eyes. He was definitely praying to God that looks could kill, so that Naruto would drop dead.
“I remember that back in the academy, he never let any of us touch his hair because (Y/N) ruffled it while dropping him off. So he would sit through the lessons looking like he just woke up.”
All his classmates snickered at that, recalling the fond memory, while you were amused. It was so hilarious to see such a stoic person so flabberghasted.
“The most interesting incident that came out of all this was, and I’m totally risking my life by telling you all this. Sasuke would kill me if I even narrate it to anyone, rather announce it on the microphone at his wedding, but your best friend gets married only once. Well hopefully. If I turn up dead by the coming of dawn, it was Sasuke Uchiha everyone.”
Everyone laughed along once again while half of the people were on the edge of their seats thinking what it could possibly be. Sasuke had a puzzled expression on his face, anticipating and fearing what Naruto had up his sleeve.
“Anyways, one when we were high........ I mean drunk, he confessed of a secret love letter he wrote to (Y/N) as a tween but never sent it.”
Your eyes widened as you let out an audible gasp while the room buzzed with chortles and sniggers. Your brother-in-law crushing on you wasn’t necessary negative news but the whole event had overwhelmed you that you could not contemplate even your reaction.
Apparently, you were the only one to be surprised as all the other guests smiled knowingly and cackled. You glanced over to find Sasuke so scarlet that you wondered if the sharingan had spread to his face given that his kekkei genkai was active now.
Itachi chuckled again seeing your reaction and put an arm around your shoulder while gently squeezing. You turned to him and finaly let out a chuckle yourself, eyes still widened in disbelief.
“Am I dreaming?” you asked and shook your head.
“Seriously though, have I been that oblivious Itachi? How could I not notice this while everyone here recalls it as some keen memory?” You held your head with one hand, leaning furthermore into itachi. Your eyes flickered to see Sasuke’s eyes, boring apologetically into your own.
One look at his chiseled face told you of his anxiety and concern. The small frown on his face saddened your heart.
Does he think I hate him? Poor baby, NO!
You weren’t offened, flattered if anything. But the spontaneity of the situation rendered you speechless.
You gave him the best smile you could muster, wiggling your eyebrows at him and blowing him a kiss from your cherry lips, and grinning again.
He visibly relaxed, shoulders now less taut, jaw a bit slackened though his face remained painted in scarlet hues. Seeing him calm down, you winked at him and turned to Naruto again, anticipating his next words.
“My only regret tonight is that I couldn’t find that letter even inside his personal diary or his deep closet. I swear it was there the last time! No worries, hope you found this speech of mine, entertaining as it is. One last toast to Sasuke though, for his new life ahead. Cheers.”
Sasuke cooled down with each passing word, smirking triumphantly when he realised he won’t be shred of his remaining dignity anymore.
Everyone toasted together, drinking huge mouthfuls of their wines, rejoicing in Naruto’s words for Sasuke.
Itachi kissed your temple, and left you while moving to the centre of the stage, where Naruto was.
“If I may?” He asked as Naruto passed him the microphone.
“I’d like to say how proud of my baby brother to have come this far in life, as a great shinobi, an excellent son, a marvelous friend and a terific human overall.”
Everone clapped vigourously including you, while all his classmates hollered and hooted. A faint blush adorned Sasuke’s cheeks as he visibly pouted on being call ‘baby bro’.
“And I was about to give a half an hour long speech, but my wee brother’s best friend, Naruto just stole all my content. So much for the tales.” Itachi playfully sighed, all the specatators buzzed with laughter while Sasuke deadpanned.
Well, he wont forget his wedding day ever now. Everyone is dead set on embarrassing him.
“However, I do have something Naruto didn’t have.”
Everyone stilled, waiting with anticipation of what was about to come, including you. Itachi refused to rehearse his best man speech with you because he wanted to write a speech for Sasuke on his own, heartfelt and everything.
He reached inside his tuxedo’s jacket and took out an old cramped paper, yellowing a bit and you raised your eyebrows, questioningly.
Sasuke gulped.
“I have the love letter, everyone!”
Oh Wow.

Approaching Sun (29)
Author’s Note: Happy Halloween! Sorry this is so late everyone. I am currently writing my thesis for graduate college (the very reason why this chapter is not longer) and it has been sucking up ALL of my time in combination with Covid-19 face-to-face teaching and virtual teaching. In short, my life has been a walking list of “to-do’s” which causes me to neglect my writing. This chapter is dedicated to zeidika (hope you are reading this) who reviewed my story back in July. I occasionally think about your message and it keeps me going through stressful times. I hope your upcoming graduation is a memorable moment and that your son is doing well. You inspire me too! Congrats on the outstanding GPA! I am hoping to follow you soon with graduation!
Please let me know what you guys think. More action-packed chapters coming your way soon (hopefully).
P.S. While you are waiting on more chapters of A.S., go check out my new mystery/horror fiction story, “Beneath the Harlow Grove” by @anerdinallherglory on Wattpad.

Chapter 29: A Generation of Weaklings
Sasuke blasted through a few too many red-dirt mountains in Kaguya’s core dimension. With every blast, he felt more like himself. Something chemical happened in his brain when he tunneled raw chakra through his veins; it helped him adopt the right mindset. Sasuke found that the quickest way to erase his thoughts was to surrender them to his shinobi persona who had to be focused. That chakra felt like a jolt to his nervous system, reminding him of himself and his shinobi goal.
Of course, now that he was less distracted, he found himself too depleted of chakra to do anything more than take a breather. Now that he was in the core dimension, Sasuke would have to adjust his plans. Previously, the Uchiha had been trying to cross into the desert dimension without going through the middle dimension. Now that he had jumped ship and escaped here by instinct, he was going to have to do this whole thing in reverse. Logically, his next step would have to be crossing into the desert dimension and then overpassing this core dimension directly to Kunagakure. All this would require a lot of chakra.
Just to speed up the process, Sasuke momentarily considered swallowing one of the chakra pills that he had swiped before his cold exit hours before into this dimension. It might be a good idea for experimentation purposes, but Sasuke knew enough about shortcuts to comprehend that chakra pills would do more harm than good, which is why they were typically reserved. It was best, the Uchiha decided strategically, to take the pill when he was at his chakra max, so he could ultimately top it off and have just the right amount to make the jump.
And besides, Sasuke just didn’t have enough time or chakra to experiment recklessly. He would get one shot to try it before he had to wait a significant amount of time for his chakra to replenish enough to try it again if he failed. Not to mention in what ways he would have to recover from whatever side effects he would suffer through from abusing the chakra pills.
Sasuke pinched his nose in concentration and tried his best to expel Sakura from his mind while he waited. And it worked just enough, for the most part…consciously—until he fell asleep that night and dreamt of her, his suppressed thoughts confronting him in his subconscious. He had developed a habit of dreaming about Sakura lately, so this wasn’t something new to him. His dreams of her usually involved her imminent death; an enemy threatening her life in a way that Sasuke was too late to prevent. This was the case. Usually. But something about that kiss earlier had unnerved Sasuke, transforming his instinctual focus on her from one of concern to one of…how would he describe it? Desire? Hope? Longing? None of those words seemed acceptable to the Uchiha; he hated to have to admit to any of those feelings even when dreaming.
In this dream, he was back in that damn medicine preparation room, glaring into Sakura’s green eyes after that unexpected kiss. But this time, instead of sensibly leaving, the Uchiha gave in to her desperate pleadings, taking her chin between his fingertips and bringing her mouth back to his. In this dream, Sasuke kissed her. Was kissing her frenziedly, hand suddenly twisting in the pink fuzz at the nape of her hot, flushed neck. Was, until a hand clamped firmly on his shoulder, jerking him abruptly back away from her. When he turned, Sasuke was face-to-face with himself. His conscious self vs. the subconscious.
When Sasuke woke, he laughed derisively as he realized he would always be the one to get in his own way in both reality and fiction.
“Good,” he said aloud to the airless dimension, suddenly frustrated for fantasizing about the opposite scenario of the one he had chosen. He hoped Kaguya, or others like her, somehow were able to hear him through this connection of dimensions. They would see just how determined he was to rid the world of them; how dedicated he was to protect those he loved. So much so, that he would sacrifice and surrender every aspect of his life to this goal.
Sasuke stood then, forming the hand sign to split the dimension in the space before him until raging sand materialized before his eyes. He decided he would just not sleep; not unless he was so tired that he wouldn’t even have enough left in him to dream.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Sakura was a quick learner. The medical ninja gave herself that credit at least as she imitated the slow intake and exhale of breath that professed sleep. This certainly wasn’t her first kidnapping. Half a year ago, Kido had done just exactly that and as soon as his posse realized she was awake, the show had begun. Sakura’s poison-trained system had finally started to break down whatever sleep-induced toxin Mako had spiked her drink with. With no conception of how long she had been unconscious, Sakura had become cognizant and immediately began to mimic an undisturbed state. This time, she was set on listening. This time, she would assess and strategically plan.
She had been waiting to hear the answer as to “why” she found herself in this particular situation as she was dragged, then hoisted over someone’s shoulder. For a blurry second, Sakura was taken back to her drunken episode several weeks ago when Sasuke carried her home after the medic had decided to deplete Tsunade’s alcohol stash. The only similarity between this state of stupor and that one was the pounding headache that made Sakura want to vomit. That was when memory caught up with her and she began to “act.”
She was exchanged from one shoulder to the next and Sakura realized suddenly that she had been carried by Mako up until this point--that bastard--and was being surrendered to someone else. She didn’t know the voice.
“Great job,” a guttural accent commended Mako for his successful abduction. Sakura planned on commending him herself once she regained the upper hand.
“Just shut up and walk,” came Mako’s voice, in a tone that sent shivers down Sakura’s spine. She had never heard him speak like that. How could she have been played by him this whole time?
Sakura began to second-guess her decision to pretend the longer that they walked. In cases of abduction, it was well known that a person’s chances of survival drastically dropped if the kidnapper succeeded in moving them to a second location. But Sakura thought of Isao, her patients, her coworkers, and even Sasuke and resolved herself. It was better for them if she could allow these maniacs to believe that they had got her. What they didn’t know, was that their mistake would be getting Sakura just far enough away from civilians where she could cause some real damage. She had handled Kido; she could take care of these two as well. Neither of them could have anticipated her other skillset; Mako didn’t know her well enough.
When they had dropped her not so gracefully onto her back an hour later, Sakura bit the inside of her cheek to keep from making a pained groan or facial expression to give away her performance. Other voices chimed in then, and Sakura realized her adversaries had just doubled.
“About damn time,” someone drawled as she was dropped. “You couldn’t have taken care of this sooner?”
There was some shuffling as her capturers arranged themselves in what sounded like a cramped space.
Mako announced: “She’s surprisingly resistant. Not to mention Uchiha’s been around just until recently.”
That particular statement wounded Sakura a little more than the fall she just sustained. Of course, this was all about Sasuke. She should have known. Kido had kidnapped her for this same reason: to lure in Sasuke, kill her in front of him so his eyes would change. Sakura was starting to get pretty annoyed with people trying to use her to get to Sasuke—as if she would ever let that happen. When would they learn that things weren’t so black and white? Mako’s previous statement the morning of her capture began to make more sense to her now: “Well, it’s obvious that he likes you. To be honest, I thought you were already a couple.” And Sakura cursed her mouth for confiding in him because now she identified his interest as a predatory investigation.
“Or maybe you just weren’t trying hard enough because you liked her,” came a response from a voice Sakura seemed to recognize for some reason. It was different from the rest—distinctively female. Sakura mentally raised an eyebrow at that fact.
“Believe me, that’s not the case” came Mako’s defense. “Ashuwa just didn’t do the trick on a medical specialist as we had hoped.”
And then Sakura was cursing. Cursing a stream of silent words that wouldn’t do her any good to express verbally now that she was getting information. The bastard had even convinced her that Sasuke should take it. She thanked the universe for Sasuke’s non-allergic reaction to it.
“What ended up working?” came the female voice again, expressing honest curiosity.
“Tea and kindness,” Mako stated unemotionally, eager to move past the topic. “Now let’s get on with this.”
“Of course,” said the female again, tossing what sounded like clanging metal onto the floor at his feet. “You have been given a position among us as promised for your service. Welcome.”
Sakura couldn’t resist. She snuck a peek through the corner of her eyelashes at them then and did not like what she saw. She was in a small gathering room with a domed ceiling, one of the many adobe homes on the outskirts of the Sand Village. She had also miscounted by 1. There were four of them, an extra silent companion seated & leaning against the wall farthest from her, seemingly uninterested. In the same second, Sakura also noted that Mako had bent down to retrieve something she recognized, a headband with a foreign symbol etched onto it—the same symbol she had seen on the headbands of their assailants back at the Tanigakure lodge. She made the connection: these were the same ninja who had followed Sakura and ambushed her and Sasuke in the night. The ninja she had recounted to Gaara, who was supposedly on their trail. How did they manage to get past him?
Just as Sakura thought this, an unexpected thud came from the ceiling accompanied by the crumbling sound of sand. Quiet consumed them as no one moved. Sakura observed quietly as all ninja revealed their weapons in silence as if they were snakes quietly coiling back to strike.
The man in the corner nodded toward the door, and the ninja closest to Sakura’s head disbanded from the group and disappeared within a second. Once outside, the same ninja began swearing loudly at some surprise. Everyone in the room relaxed as a child’s vocal squirming reached their years. The shuffling continued as this child was being brought inside.
“Damn kid must have followed us!” the returning ninja said in annoyance. “Got some bite to him.”
If Sakura hadn’t been laying down already, she would have collapsed in shock and fear at the memorable voice of the child they had just apprehended and threw down next to her. “Get away from me!” Isao shouted, the boy swinging a kunai out in front of him. They laughed wickedly at the boy’s ferocity.
Okay, show’s over.
Protective instincts kicked in swiftly as Sakura successfully reached forward and stole the kunai away from the child in less than a blinking second. There were unanimous intakes of breath throughout the room as Sakura managed to get Isao behind her and compress the blade threateningly against the esophagus of the man who had touched the both of them—it all happened within a microsecond.  Sakura’s sudden revival activated the group’s defense and they were upon her, but she let out a snarl, drawing blood against the man’s throat.
They immediately stopped their advance when the man she had ensnared began to laugh, throat nicking against the knife as he did so. “Do it already,” he breathed through his laugh. “My death will be a part of this effort. It will only help us in our cause.”
Sakura was certainly tempted by that. The way he had roughly handled Isao seconds before with his colossal insensitive hands was like a fresh and bloody burn on her skin, painful and needing the immediate relief of this man’s execution. But something in his words froze her hand. A cause?
“Glad you are finally awake,” came Mako’s distinct tone, a vicious friendliness warming the words again.
“Shut up you liar,” Sakura spat viciously.
“If you let him go, we’ll tell you why we are going to kill you,” came the female’s voice, and Sakura flashed her angry green eyes over in the woman’s direction. Her face and hair were covered, and Sakura acknowledged the same black shemagh that had concealed her attackers in Tanigakure.
Fat chance, she thought. Sakura immediately assessed her chakra levels and was aggravated by how slow chakra was reacting to her body’s summoning of it. Mako was a fellow medic, and Sakura deduced that whatever he had given her had strategically messed with her system and chakra connection. Sakura mutely criticized herself for trusting Mako. How many times would she be tricked in her lifetime? Probably many more, but she would learn from them all. Oh well, she thought. She had had worse odds before. Her only additional complication was Isao because now she was responsible for herself and the 11-year-old boy who had pursued after her. Had he somehow witnessed Mako’s abduction of her?
It was at this moment that the woman at the front of the room began to take off her mask, and Sakura almost dropped the knife altogether. As the black wrap was loosened and it slumped around the woman’s neck, Sakura immediately recognized the face of Hisa, the female medic ninja who had been her assistant throughout Sakura’s entire stay in Kunagakure. Even Isao behind her, gasped when he saw the woman who had helped take care of him.
Sakura’s moment of surprise was all it took for the ninja she stood behind to reach his hand lightning-quick between his own throat and the kunai. He grabbed on to Sakura’s wielded wrist with his left hand and flung her forward over his shoulder. She mentally cursed as she went flying toward the forefront of the room, landing painfully into the opposite wall. She practically went through it, and the side of the adobe house collapsed around her. As she fell, Sakura realized that the brute force used against her revealed their intention to truly kill her. They weren’t planning on preserving her, let alone sparing her life.
Sakura had been launched farther than she initially realized because when she managed to rise from the dust and sand, she winced at the other consequences of her distraction that was now beyond reach. One by one, the villains stepped through the new door that Sakura had made, carrying Isao with them. In the next second, Isao was tossed to the sand, screaming threats and clutching at the thug man’s foot that suddenly pinned down his chest. When the beast applied pressure to the child’s sternum, Isao began to moan in pain.
The sight enraged her, and she broke her silence. “You’re wrong if you think this plan of yours will work!” she screamed at them. “I am nothing to Sasuke. Nothing to anyone, do you hear me?!”
All but the quiet man snickered in response to her declarations, but she continued, seething through her teeth.
“He will not come to save me! You will not get what you want by using me! Let the child go!”
“This isn’t about Sasuke,” replied the wraith-like man who came last through the shattered side of the building’s exterior wall. For the first time since her awakening, the still man walked to the head of the party and addressed her. “Neither is it about the Hokage, or even the Jinchurki. This is about you.”
The night suddenly seemed starless, dark, and void of all sound save the squealing wind. As the stranger spoke this truth, three of the other members flanked his sides before fanning out beside him like Tamari’s fan, creating a close-knit semi-circle. The phantom-like man stood casually in the middle, his face cloaked in the combined darkness of night and the face wrapping he wore. As Sakura looked closer, even this man’s eyes, the only thing that could be seen between the black fabric, seemed like depthless holes of nothing. This man reminded Sakura of a walking desert mirage, some sort of shadow demon hiding in human clothing.
Sakura gritted her teeth as her body instinctively begged her to flee. Isao’s need for her overpowered that. She would die before abandoning him.
“Me?” Sakura asked instead, revealing her honest surprise. “What do you want with me?” It was a trick, the kunoichi told herself. What could they possibly have to gain from killing her when much more powerful figures literally walked side by side with Sakura? There was nothing to gain besides Sasuke’s, Naruto’s, or Kakashi’s ultimate death, defeat, or capture.
“Your efforts to fix the ‘mentally ill’ goes against the philosophy of our newly founded group,” came Hisa’s poison-dripped answer. Sakura noted that they all took a step toward her in synchrony, tightening in on her a little closer. This practiced pack was testing her and Sakura took a step back to match their own. She was smart enough not to let them surround her like the meal they believed her to be. Sakura felt suddenly empathetic for those mother animals who felt torn between their captured young and their own safety. Let them believe that she was this helpless observer who reeked with fear.
“And what philosophy is that?” She asked, imitating the breaks of a trembling in her throat. She practically seeped the question with distress. It must have had the effect Sakura wanted, for her enemies smiled in response and took another step toward her.
With an insanity that Sakura had not heard in his statements before, Mako declared emphatically, “Progression!”
Sakura couldn’t wait to punch his teeth so far down his throat that Mako’s vocal cords and epiglottis would permanently suffer damage.
Sakura stammered again, portraying the weakness they wished to see. “Pro--progression?” Another step back. Just a little more.
“Whether or not it is your intention, you will create a shinobi generation of weaklings,” stated the leader again. He essentially breathed more darkness, because the night around her suddenly grew thicker. Was she imagining it, or could this be some sort of jutsu?
“How do you figure that?” she questioned, adding a nervous laugh to her annoyed tinged inquiry. Sakura’s exasperation with their reasoning was starting to make her focus waver.
As she asked, Sakura concentrated on her chakra. She was calling it, calling it, calling it, but it did not spring forth. She would have compared the sensation to drawing blood from a syringe, except her chakra was like liquified cement and the syringe was the size of a pen. If she chose to use it, the Strength of a Hundred Seals just might flood her chakra paths and burst through whatever plug the medicine had caused, or it could potentially well up like water in a dam and she wouldn’t have any access to it. Medically, that might be a concern. And it had only been a few weeks since she had last used her reserves to assist Sasuke crossing dimensions, so would the risk be worth the additional amount behind her forehead?
In an eerie declaration, the masked leader stepped toward her again and said, “If you go around curing the next generation of their anger and pain, brainwashing them with this vision of peace, there will be no more progression.”
“What the hell does that mean?” she asked, all pretense gone now. The confidence in her tone made them stop their encroachment. For a second, Sakura didn’t look so weak to them. They glanced at the leader, the shadow-man, and then again at Mako because Mako knew her best out of the group; he had also drugged her.
“The medicine should still be working. We must hurry though. It won’t last all night.” Listening to this, Sakura inhaled and exhaled, willing the small drip of chakra to pool more heavily in her palm. She would only have one shot before she could collect enough chakra for another one. Sakura took another step back. And another, drawing them away from Isao and his captor. Just a little more. Keep them talking.
“There is peace in the world now,” Sakura baited. “There’s no need for children to suffer through trauma alone anymore.”
The leader did not hesitate a second before responding with the practiced mission justification of their group: “Without anger, hatred, and pain, there is no incentive for war between villages. And without war, there is no need for young shinobi. You will create a generation of weaklings who cannot defend our borders. The world of Shinobi as we know it will disappear.”
Sick freaks, Sakura thought. She was their target because she worked with children? They were afraid that children would be weaker without pain? “The world would be a better place,” she commented, “if there weren’t people like you in it.” Sakura didn’t care to listen to this nonsense anymore. She hated to kill them, but they weren’t giving her much of a choice.
At exactly this moment, Isao had somehow reached into his pocket for another kunai, stabbing it into the foot that held him down. Apparently, the ninja had been distracted by the rest of the pack’s slow pursuit of Sakura and the conversation. Isao left his mark, slicing it clean across the top. The ninja screamed which turned the heads of all those before her. Isao bolted up before anyone had the chance to stop him.
On his feet now, he charged the group and Sakura watched in panic as the ninja he had left behind now followed, brandishing a sword of his own.
“Kill that brat!” came Hisa’s order.
And then Sakura was in the air, her fury propelling her forward and then down on top of them.
Mako let out a cry of alarm, the first to notice her above them. The kunoichi had just enough for one hit, and Sakura prayed the sand wouldn’t buffer too much of it. She fisted the meager amount of chakra between both of her palms, fingers interlocked to make a combined fist. She brought them down as hard as she could at their feet, making it through several feet of sand before she connected it with the ground. Sakura was not able to see the damage done, because not only did sand fill the air, but all light blinked out and a shroud of complete blackness consumed her.

Hey y’all back at it again :p I’m living for the picture below🤣😭 (but it’s not mine!)
Meeting Again
Naruto~
After that fateful meeting with Naruto (who’d emptied your wallet), you two had agreed to go out again a week later. Of course, you told Naruto that he had to pay since there was no way you were paying for him to eat six bowls of ramen ever again.
That brings you to the present, as you sat down next to the blonde ninja. “I hate that guy! He thinks he’s so great with his duck butt hair and tragic backstory.” Naruto whined sullenly. You laughed at his antics, wondering if this Sasuke was as bad as he sounded.
“Well, you guys are on a team now, you have to get along or else your team will fall apart.” He crossed his arms with a huff. “Tell him that! He’s always trying to make me look bad, believe it!” You stifled a laugh, you felt bad at the genuinely upset expression he had.
You placed a hand on his shoulder. “Forget about him, you’re eating ramen! You can’t be upset while eating ramen, it just doesn’t make sense.”
He snickered, digging into his third bowl. “You’re right! Now tell me about your team!” You had skipped the last year of the academy, so even though you were the same age, you were a year ahead.
“My teammates are (guy friend name) and (other guy friend name). We make a pretty great team, even though they can be total idiots.” I finished my bowl of ramen, completely full.
“Lucky,” he pouted, thinking, “I have an idea! How about we hang out a few times a week so we can relax after a long day of dealing with idiots?” I giggled, but that actually sounded like a great idea.
Even though the two of you had a lot in common, you balanced each other out perfectly. He was impulsive and loud, while you was more level headed and quiet.
“Sounds good to me! Say, after this, we should prank Sasuke. Are you up for it?” His evil grin matched yours. “Definitely! Should we dye his hair pink?”
Sasuke~
You and Sasuke had easily fallen into a routine. You’d spar and train together as the sun begins to leave the sky, then the two of you would watch the stars for a while. Sometimes you would talk about things that neither told anyone else and other times you would spend it in silence. Today was not one of those days. Sasuke had asked you to tell a story of when you ad Deidara were young. He didn’t give you a reason but you were happy to indulge.
“Deidara and I didn’t really have a happy childhood, our parents made sure of that… but sometimes, when he would earn enough money by selling sculptures, he would take me places.” You smiled wistfully at the memory.
“Where?” You shrugged. “Anywhere I wanted. Out for dinner, a candy store… he bought me a kitten once. Tell me a good memory of your brother.” For once Sasuke’s face didn’t harden at the mention of Itachi if anything, it softened.
“He used to do this thing, a forehead poke… I’d ask him something and if he couldn’t answer or was too busy he’d say sorry, poke me and say next time.” You turned to him, curiously. “He would just… poke your forehead?” Sasuke chuckled quietly.
“Just like this.” He took his middle and index fingers and all but jabbed them into your forehead. You grunted, rubbing your head. “Ow,” You pouted. The Uchiha just shrugged. “Yep, it used to bother me too.”
It was quiet for a moment, the two of you just watching the stars. “You said your parents didn’t want you guys to have a childhood. Why?” You looked at him for a long second. “They hated us. Hated Dei’s hand mouths, hated my forehead tattoo, hated our need to blow things up…” He scrutinized you for a second. “Forehead tattoo?” You nodded but didn’t move to show him. You just weren’t ready yet. Luckily, he seemed to understand that.
The two of you didn’t stay for much longer, but it had been a good night. Sasuke and you had a lot in common, and it seemed to form a bond between the two of you.
Neji~
Somehow you’d let Ino and Hinata drag you to the mall. They had assured you it’d be fun, light shopping and then you’d all go out for sushi afterward. You knew you’d regret it, but you loved hanging out with your friends, so you agreed. You were right, of course, the second Ino and Hinata stepped into the first store they had made it clear they were going for a whole new wardrobe.
You, on the other hand, had a specific agenda in mind. You just wanted to purchase a few hair accessories. Hairbands, clips, and the like. But, no, the girls insisted on dragging you everywhere.
“(Y/N), we’re going to try these on, we’ll be right back, ok?” Ino grinned, already halfway in the dressing room. “Yep…” They were already gone as you sat down knowing you had to wait. This was the sixth store and you were already more than a little irritated.
“Bored, (Y/N)?” You whipped around, already knowing who the smooth voice belonged to. “Neji? What are you doing here?” You didn’t even try to hide your smile. It’d been a week since you’d met him ad you were hoping you’d get to see him again.
“Hinata dragged me here, but I escaped. I didn’t know you would be here though.” You sighed. “Lucky. This is the sixth store they’ve dragged me to! I don’t think I can handle much more.” You whined dramatically.
Neji smirked, holding a hand out to you. “Let’s escape. I know the perfect place to go.” You looked back towards the dressing rooms. “You don’t think they’ll be mad?” He shrugged, as you put your hand in his. “They’ll get over it. Now let’s go before they catch us!”
~~~~~~~~~Time Skip Sponsored By Neji’s L’oreal Commercial~~~~~~~~~~
The two of you found yourselves at the food court, surrounded by vendors with tons of different kinds of food. “Neji, you read my mind.” He smirked. “They bribed you with the promise of food too, didn’t they.” You laughed. “It was the only way.”
The two of you looked around, the number of options overwhelming you. “That sushi place sounds good, what do you think?” Neji suggested. You grabbed his hand, dragging him over. “Sounds perfect to me!”
After ordering, the two of you find a seat away from all the other patrons. “So, how’d the shampoo work out for you?” Your eyes lit up as you thought of the way it practically rejuvenated your hair. “It was amazing! I’m so glad I ran into you. Is that the one you use to?” He nodded, putting his chopsticks down. “Yes, it’s my favorite of all the ones I’ve used.”
“Neji?! (Y/N)?! Why’d you leave?!” You saw an angry Ino and Hinata rushing after you. “Uh oh, time to dip!” Grabbing Neji’s hand you pulled him out of the mall, both of you laughing all the way.
Shikamaru~
Despite your plans to meet up with Shikamaru, it’d been about a week since you’d seen him and you’d spent a lot of time at the spot you’d met him. You brought your notebook every time, but you never ended up using it. You just watched the clouds, although it wasn’t as enjoyable without him.
You began to feel a little foolish, staring at the sky by yourself. Dejected, you stood up, grabbed your stuff and prepared to leave. “Leaving so soon?” You stood up from where you’d bent down to grab your things and was met with the boy you’d been waiting for.
“Shikamaru? You came!” He grinned sheepishly. “Sorry, it took so long, I had to go on a mission, but I’m glad you waited.” You giggled. “It’s alright, I’m just happy you’re here now.”
You both sat down next to each other, just like the first day you met. “We agreed that you’d show me the wonders of writing… what better way than by reading to me?” You instantly flushed at the suggestion.
“The stories not even finished yet…” You mumbled. He shrugged. “Oh, c’mon! Just show me what you have. If you don’t read it to me, I’ll just have to look at it myself and that’d be a drag.” You laughed at him despite yourself at his catchphrase.
“Okay… I’ll read some. But don’t laugh!” He gave you a small smile. “Wouldn’t dream of it.” You began to read your story, the tale of a girl named (name of protagonist) who only dreamed of two things; freedom and power. She ran away from her town, with enough supplies to last her few days-
“Why would she do that? Her parents loved her, she had friends and… everything was great…” Shikamaru interrupted quietly. You smiled softly. “Sometimes our goals can drive us to do foolish things. Now listen!” He pouted. “Geesh, woman, so demanding.” You snickered before starting where you left off.
As you finished your story, Shikamaru looked disappointed. “That’s it?” You gave him a look. “I told you it wasn’t done yet.” He groaned. “How troublesome. When you finish it, I want to hear the rest of it.” You smiled, flattered that he had liked it. “You’ll be the first one to know. Doesn’t that cloud kinda look like a pineapple?” He gave you a weird look before looking at the cloud. “Um, I guess so-” You smirked mischievously.
“It reminds me of you!” He scowled. “How mature, (Y/N),” He muttered, but you kept laughing. “Okay, it’s not that funny, geez, woman!” You only laughed harder.
Kiba~
Ever since that movie night, Kiba seemed to frequent the Nara home; not that either of you minded, he was great company. Per usual, the three of you were in Shikamaru’s room, bored out of your mind. You were laid out on the bed, your head dangling off the edge, while Kiba sat on the floor, his head next to yours, and Shikamaru sat at his desk chair, staring at nothing.
“Guys, I’m bored.” You groaned. Shikamaru sighed. “How about I go grab some things from the basement. I’ll be back.”
He immediately rushed off, effectively stunning you both. “Was that really our Shika? Cause, he would’ve complained about you being troublesome and a drag and would’ve made us go.” Kiba stated in shock. You nodded dumbly. “Yeah… he’s up to something.” You didn’t miss the cute smirk on his face, nor did you miss his eyes full of mischief. “Wanna prank him?” You grinned deviously. “Let’s do it.” The two of you scrambled to your feet, going straight to the closet to grab supplies. “So what’s the plan, dog boy?” Clearly choosing to ignore your nicknames, he handed you a button. “What’s this? Wait a second, you’ve been planning this?!”
He grinned. “I wanted it to work. It’ll beep every time it’s pressed, but it’s not very loud, just shrill. Go ahead and try it.” You did and immediately winced at the high pitched whine.
“We’re going to put it under his pillow.” A slow grin spread across your lips. “A tired Shika is a Shika who won’t bother to check his pillow. This is genius!” I regretted the words as soon as they left my lips. There was no way Kiba’s smug expression was going anywhere now.
“C’mon! We don’t know how long he’ll be gone. We have to hurry.” You dragged him back to Shikamaru’s room, snickering as you imagined your best friend’s reaction.
“You can play it cool right? You won’t be laughing all night or something?” You huffed at the question. “Of course not, I’ve played plenty of pranks on him. But this is a pretty good one.” Kiba chuckled as he stuffed the small button inside the pillowcase.
“Perfect. Now act natural before he gets here.” You both laid on the bed, playing with Akamaru, who barked, excited at all the attention he was receiving. Just as you were about to mention his pillow, you heard the door slam.
“Hey, guys, come down here.” You and Kiba shared a look before rushing downstairs. “Blankets and pillows…? What’re you doing?” Kiba asked. “You two are watching a movie in a pillow fort, so I can take a nap!” You and Kiba sighed. “He’s such a chivalrous host, isn’t he?” Both guys laughed, but Shika was already up the stairs.
We both watched as he left, excited our plan was working so well. “Do you think he’ll fid it?” You asked. Kiba grabbed a blanket. “Nah, he’ll be pissed though.” Snickering you guys built the pillow fort. Five minutes later you heard Shikamaru yell a few… obscenities.
Gaara~
You walked up to the sand sibling’s door, excited to meet up with your friends for a day of shopping. You knocked on the mahogany door, hoping all three of them were up and ready. They told you 8:30 and you were perfectly on time.
The door opened revealing their redheaded brother. “Hey, Gaara! Are you guys ready?” He sighed opening the door for you. “Hello, (Y/N). I am, but when I came down, Temari and Kankuro were still sleeping.” You facepalmed. “I really should’ve expected this… this is the fourth time!” Gaara smirked. “Want to wake them up? I’m sure we can find something loud.”
You rubbed your hands evilly. “Can I play the piano?” You pointed to the grand piano in the corner, already forming a devious plan. “Yes, of course. I didn’t know you played.” You blushed, sitting down on the bench. “I don’t usually tell people… but this is one of my hobbies.” He flashed you a small smile, as he sat down next to you. “What are you going to play?” I placed my fingers over the keys. “Dissonant chords. They’re harsh and loud and will surely wake them up!” He nodded once in approval and you began.
Your fingers flew over the keys, the sounds of a jarring and mournful wail poured out. You both winced as you played the notes as loud as possible. It took a few minutes, but you heard the stomping of footsteps.
“What is going on?!” Temari and Kankuro, both looking half asleep. “Oh, hey (Y/N), what’re you doing here today?” Kankuro asked, yawning. Both you and Gaara stared at them, unimpressed. “We were supposed to go shopping today.” Temari blanched. “Shoot! You’re right!” They rushed back up the stairs, leaving you and Gaara alone once again.
“Can you play me something else?” Gaara whispered, awkwardly. You were beaming as you positioned your hands over the keys. “I’d love to! I’ll play Swan Lake, it’s my favorite.” (A/N Yes I know it’s not anywhere near the era or location but just bear with me XD) The familiar tune wafted all through the room and you smiled at the calming music.
“Would you ever be willing to teach me to play?” You paused, a delighted smile on your face. “Next time I come over, I’ll teach you everything I know.” His cheeks reddened slightly, matching yours.
“Thank you… I’m looking forward to it.”
Kakashi~
After your spar three days ago, which you had very nearly won, you and Kakashi had decided to take a stroll around the park. You were both outdoorsy types so it worked perfectly for both of you.
“So you were ANBU Black Ops Captain before you got a Genin team right?” You nodded thinking of your team, Ino, Choji, and Shikamaru (screw Kurenai no one needs her). “Yeah, it’s been quite the transition,” You laughed.
“What made you change?” You sighed. “It was great being in ANBU, but I’ve been doing that since I was 15. I… guess I wanted to pass on my own ninja way if that makes sense.”
He gave you a closed eye smile. “That makes perfect sense, in fact-“
“Kakashi-sensei!” Three teens that you recognized as Team 7, Sasuke, Sakura, and Naruto, ambushed the silverette, with angry expressions.
“You were supposed to be at training four hours ago! That’s late even for you, Kakashi-sensei!” Sakura exclaimed. You gave the man a look. “We could’ve hung out another time, Kakashi. Go train your team.”
Three pairs of eyes settled on you. “Heyy… you’re Ino, Shikamaru, and Choji’s sensei! What are you doing here?!” You flushed as Naruto pointed at you. “Ah, yes I am. I didn’t know he had somewhere to be, sorry guys.” Sasuke gave Kakashi a sly glance before addressing you.
“Tch. It’s not a problem. Kakashi should’ve just invited you to our training session. I’m sure you could help.”
Both you and Kakashi blushed, but you smirked right back at the Uchiha. “That’s a good idea! I’ve heard great things about you guys!” The masked man groaned but didn’t protest.
~~~Time Skip Brought By Team 7 Reading The Icha Icha Books~~~
That’s how you ended up watching Naruto and Sasuke spar, while Sakura practiced her medical skills. “You know, you never did get to finish your sentence earlier.” He thought back to the moment for a second.
“Ah, yes. I was saying I felt the same way when I left ANBU… it’s a great position, and very important, but there’s more to being a shinobi- to life- than endless missions and the like.” You watched the Naruto narrowly dodge a kunai. “Couldn’t have said it better myself. Plus I wouldn’t have gotten to meet you, and even though we haven’t been talking long, I enjoy your company.”
You could just ake out the grin under his mask. “Same for me. We should hang out more often. Preferably when our students aren’t around to bother us.” You giggled. “Well, actually you were supposed to be with them four hours ago!” He waved a hand. “Technicalities.” You both laughed, silently agreeing that Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura could handle their training for a day.
~Akatsuki~
Pein~
“That’s the girl? She looks pretty harmless, Leader-sama…” Your eyes opened a bit, hearing voices not far from you. “I didn’t bring you here so you can tell me what she looks like, Kakuzu. She stole my ring and I need it back.”
Your blood ran cold. That Pein guy was back for you and he had brought help. You had been sleeping in the corner of an alleyway. As of now, there was only one way to escape. There was a hole that you fit through perfectly that led down to catacombs you could hide in.
You stood up, leaping for the entrance. “Oh, no you don’t kid.” Just as you reached the hole, something wrapped around your waist, restraining you. Stitches? The man, who you assumed was ‘Kakuzu’ had grabbed you with the stitches that encircled his body.
“We ought to kill you, but had I not wiped off my hand, I wouldn’t have noticed you’d even stole my ring- enough Kakuzu, stop laughing- and then you’d already disappeared. Your expertise could come in handy.”
Just then you noticed their cloaks. Oh god. You had stolen from the Akatsuki. Your blood ran cold. “Y-you want me t-to join?” Pein nodded walking closer. He roughly grabbed your wrist and snatched his ring back. “Tch. Stealing from a God.” His hand struck out, hitting your pressure point, causing you to go limp.
~~~Le Time Skip Brought By An Akatsuki Outing To The Nail Salon~~~
You woke up with a splitting headache and with itchy wrists. Your eyes blinked open, trying to rub your head, but your wrists were restrained in shackles. “W-what? Hello?! You can’t keep me here!” The orange-haired jerk came into view, causing your eyes to narrow.
“You’re right. You can’t stay here; that’s why I’m giving you two choices. Become a member of the Akatsuki or die.” Your jaw dropped. “I’m not even a shinobi! What-” He held up a hand.
“You will be a spy and gather information for our organization. Now, what is your choice?” You hung your head, knowing you had no choice but to accept your new fate. “I’ll join.”
Deidara~
You searched the shelves of the art shop, looking for very specific items. The blonde artist you had met the day before had inspired you to try something new. You were going to do something of an explosion exhibit. You had already bought mini fireworks, now you just needed (favorite color) spray paint and colorful smoke bombs.
“Fancy seeing you here, (Y/N), un,” Chuckled a low voice from behind you. You spun around, coming face to face with the very man you were thinking of. “D-Deidara! What are you doing here?” Your surprised face turned into one of happiness. It’d been less than a week since you’d seen him, you weren’t expecting him to visit so soon, not that you were complaining.
“Well, I needed more clay, and I heard this place had good quality materials, yeah.” You nodded eagerly. “They do, this is the only place I’ll shop at.” His head tilted to the side a bit, and you glimpsed a piece of metal where his eye should be. Before you could ask, he was peering into your basket. “What are you doing here, un?” Heat colored your cheeks as you explained.
“Well… you kinda inspired me the other night…” His eye lit up. “What are you planning and can I help, hmm?” You grabbed his arm, pulling him along. “That’d be great! I just need two more things. While I do that go grab your clay and we’ll meet up front so I can explain everything!”
It didn’t take long for either of you to find your supplies and you hurriedly paid. “Okay, so I had the idea to plant colored smoke bombs all over town square and set them all off, along with some flares.” He was beaming at you as you both left the store. “Spoken like a true artist, un! I can set off the mini bombs while you do the flares, hmm?” He suggested.
“That’s perfect, we can do one at a time, one bomb for every flare?” You two quickly finished planning and agreed to meet up in front of the store at dusk so you had time to set up.
~~~Time Skip Brought To You By Deidara, Sasori, and Hidan Having A Fashion Show~~~
(PIC BELOW)
The sun was just starting its descent when you snuck back to your and Deidara’s rendezvous spot, flares and matches in hand. “Psst, (Y/N), psst!” You looked to your left to see Deidara dragging a clearly unwilling Sasori toward you. “Hey! You guys ready?” Sasori crossed his arms. “I didn’t agree to this.” You pouted. “Please?”
He rolled his eyes with a huff. “Fine.” You cheered quietly. “Okay, here’s the plan. The square will become real busy with night activities in the next fifteen minutes. We need to set up the bombs three per corner.” Sasori looked at all the different colors.
“Should we mismatch them?” You shrugged. “I’m not picky, whatever you guys decide you like to do. I’ll set up the flares.” The time flew as you guys hurriedly set up all your explosive materials.
A small bird landed at your feet, signaling that Deidara and Sasori were ready. You let out a shrill whistle and the first three bombs went off in a small pop! Purple, red, and blue smoke drawing the attention of bystanders. You set off a flare that lot up into the night sky in response.
The ‘show’ had been a huge success, drawing crowds from all over. It had lasted a good amount of time as well.
“That was beautiful, un.” You threw your arms around the blonde, startling him. “I couldn’t have done this without you, thank you!” His arms wrapped around your waist.
“You’re welcome… maybe we can do this again sometime, yeah.”

The Lesbian One
SakuHina head canon where the dark haired, noble clan inheriting child she falls in love with is Hinata instead of Sasuke.
Bullies were making fun of Sakura for her forehead and Hinata said, through bright red blushes that she thinks Sakura is the prettiest girl Hinata knows, other than her Mother.
This gives Sakura self-confidence of doom and she doesn’t care about her looks anymore because suck on that, kind, cool Hinata thinks she’s the prettiest girl around!
Sakura giving Hinata the support she deserves.
Hinata being grateful and always reminding Sakura how cool Sakura is.
Hinata still being shy, but working on her shyness because there’s no way Sakura doesn’t praise the very ground her crush walks on.
“HINATA-CHAN! YOU DID IT! YOU’RE SO AWESOME! Isn’t she awesome Ino????”
Academy Arc:
Hinata told Sakura she wanted to be a strong shinobi like her father, but kind like her mother and Sakura heard “I wanna be the strongest ninja out!” To make sure her crush succeeds in her goals, Sakura promised to be the best kunoichi ever, so her and Hinata could be equals.
She studies to be the top kunoichi of her year and trains with Hinata a lot, complementing Hinata for every hit she makes and drowns Hinata in support.
Sakura hates Naruto. With a passion, nothing to do with Naruto being Naruto and everything to do with Hinata crushing on him. This hate manifests in her declaring them rivals.
Sakura is 100% the type to wonder why her rivals an idiot and to feel frustrated that an idiot like Naruto makes Hinata blush or laugh. The angrier she is the more she demands to spar him in taijutsu, they both get dramatically good at it.
Sakura because if Naruto drags a fight to stamina he’d totally win, so she figures she needs to get stronger with her form, finish the fight sooner. Naruto because he’s always been a hands on person and kata’s don’t make any sense to him, but whatever Sakura-chan does works for her, so he doesn’t mind copying her. Plus, Sakura's scary strong when she wants to be and Naruto makes a point of not getting hit from her.
Naruto becomes the fastest ninja in their year...Whenever Sakura’s involved. Not even Sasuke can catch him when he’s running from Sakura and he’s tried, it’s good practice.
Hinata once made an off-handed remark when she was training that Naruto has some pretty large chakra coils and Sakura’s been trying to increase her chakra coils since. (Muttering, “Stupid Naruto can barely hold a kunai right without me having to smack him sideways but he’s the one Hinata compliments?”) Moral is Sakura makes him a very competent ninja, but only because she’s like “An idiot like you can’t even aim properly, look at me, I’m better! Shifting my weight properly, unlike you!” and Naruto just copies her because to prove people wrong is in his blood and if she can do it, then all he has to do is copy her to do it better.
Unfortunately she can’t do much for his chakra control in the academy.
Everyone at the academy except Ino and Shikamaru thinks Sakura likes Sasuke because once she during an argument with Ino she screamed that “DON’T BE STUPID I LIKE” Pointed at Hinata, who happened to be with Sasuke. She didn’t finish the sentence because she looked at Hinata when she pointed and Hinata smiled and she melted.
Sasuke figures out Sakura doesn’t like him when he notices she blushes around Hinata more than him and this one time Hinata dropped one of her salves, so he gave it back to her the next day in class and the glare she gave him was telling.
As long as you’re not Hinata, Sakura has no problem expressing her crush. When Hinata’s around she never says I like you Hinata, but her actions are telling.
Sakura and Ino are still best friends because only Ino wants Sasuke and they only fight when Ino says Sasuke is better than Hinata.
Ino gets way better at taijutsu as well, because if her best friends going to be the strongest kunoichi then hell no is Ino gonna get left behind.
It gets to a point where Inoichi’s like “Ino darling you don’t need to be so serious about taijutsu, you know how we Yamanaka fight” and Ino’s like “WHAT DO YOU MEAN? HELL NO IS SAKURA GONNA BE STRONGER THAN ME, I REFUSE TO BE PROTECTED BY HER!!!!”
Genin Arc:
Hinata is an oblivious eggplant and thinks Sakura is just a very supportive friend.
Kiba, “She asked you to live happily with her as the strongest kunoichi in the future,”
Hinata, eyes sparkling, “Yeah isn’t it cool, I’m so lucky to have such a supportive friend with me.”
Kiba ships Hinata and Happiness (it’s canon guys) so he’s Sakura’s biggest wingman but Hinata manages to turn every cute, romance-y moment they have into a friend thing.
Kiba could see Sakura’s crush from a mile away, it wasn’t until the Chunin exams that he realised they weren’t dating though. This is when he begins being Sakura’s wingman.
Scene:
Kiba looks over at Hinata, “You know...If we meet Sakura and them in this exam, I won’t let you hold back. We’ve worked too hard for your feelings to stop us and if she’s the enemy, we face her.”
Hinata smiles softly at Kiba and stammers out, “I’d never do that, Sakura-chan would hate it if I held back against her, as her friend I will fight her with my all!”
“I do not believe Kiba means your feelings as her friend? Why? Because it is clear he is speaking of the deeper connection you two share.”
“Ano– Ino-san is her best friend, though Sakura-chan and I are certainly good friends.”
Cue two more minutes of them tryna coax Hinata to admit her and Sakura have something before they realise Hinata doesn’t know about Sakura’s crush and looking at each other in amazement because like. Now that they’re genin, Sakura is way less subtle because she misses Hinata and wtf, how had Hinata not realised yet?
Also Sakura wins her fight with Ino bc Ino’s strong af but she doesn’t have any concrete goal in mind, she’s just getting strong to be Sakura’s equal and Sakura’s like ‘giiiirl I’m tryna be the strongest to protect my wife you hear!’
When Sakura meets Neji she understands what true hatred is and it’s only Kakashi’s warning her that Hinata would hurt more if she jumped in that stopped her from trying to fight him. She doesn’t speak to Kakashi for the whole month she trains, trying to justify if Hinata’s pride was worth her life.
She totally trains with Gai for that month because Kakashi is lazy and Gai was around and Sakura is hella strong, she just needs motivation like Gai!
Hinata still has a big fat crush on Naruto until shippuden and when she canon confesses and nearly dies, Sakura confesses to her and says shit like “You don’t have to love me/ I’ve accepted that you won’t, no matter how hard I try. But as your friend I want you to promise, you won’t ever do something so reckless. I don’t wnt to lose you Hinata. You’re my special person I can’t lose you.”
Hinata is 140% confused and then like. She just notices Sakura. How fucking cool and kind she is and she’s always appreciated Sakura and thought she was beautiful but. She’s never really looked at those arms and damn are they defined. And her smile just makes Hinata feel at ease?

I’ve seen a lot of (obviously nsfw) Gaara/Naruto fanfics where Gaara has a praise kink, but consider the opposite...
Naruto spends his whole life just wanting to be acknowledged by other people, and it doesn’t even end there. Even after Sasuke “acknowledges” Naruto when they’re both in the academy, Naruto can’t bear to lose that “acknowledgement” from Sasuke. He’s one of those people that can’t accept the fact that some people just won’t like you. He needs to be friends with everyone, and I think a lot of this comes from growing up as an orphan and having most of the village automatically looking down on him/hating him. Obviously being alone an outcast by society sucks, so when he gets his first taste of friendship (Iruka, Sasuke, Sakura, etc.) he is terrified of losing those bonds. He never wants to go back to the loneliness he faced before, and he doesn’t understand that it’s okay to grow apart.
Naruto grew up around other kids, and even though he was often left out, he got to see how they interacted with each other normally. He saw them make friends and have crushes and develop these relationships that he could only dream about. So, growing up, he would notice when certain interactions were missing from his own life. He would notice that even after making friends, he was known as the “goofball” or the “knucklehead” and sure, he doesn’t mind being known as those things (and is probably somewhat proud of it tbh) but he’s never the handsome one, or the cool one (Hinata thinks so but he’s never shown to notice or realize that). If someone is nervous around him, it’s because they are afraid of Kyuubi, not because they particularly care about what Naruto thinks of them. And Naruto would grow up noticing that...but, at the same time, he feels like he’s lucky to have any friends at all. Anything is better than how it was before he joined the academy, so he doesn’t feel like he has the right to want anything more than that.
And people are always calling him “dead last” or “dumb,” and they’re not exactly wrong (in context). But...when has anyone really given Naruto a compliment? The closest I can think is during the chuunin exams when Sasuke says he wants to fight Naruto because he’s gotten strong (which is maybe another reason why Naruto is unable to let Sasuke go, this was the first person to actually praise him).
On the other hand, Gaara had an isolated childhood, but in a different way. The first few years of his life, he had a pretty healthy relationship with Yashamaru (if I remember correctly). He is still kept away from other kids since he’s 1. the Kazekage’s son and 2. a jinchuuriki that people are afraid of, but Yashamaru is there to make him feel safe and loved and important. So, at least in the beginning, he’s not starved for praise or attention the way that Naruto was. Also, since he doesn’t really get to socialize with other kids ever, he doesn’t know what he’s missing. He doesn’t get to experience other kids and their crushes and friendships and rivalries and all of that.
Then of course Yashamaru betrays him, and that severely breaks Gaara’s mind. He goes on a rampage, he decides he doesn’t need anyone else and that he’s just going to live for himself, completely independently. It’s unhealthy, and deep down he’s lonely, but at the same time, he’s not really seeking anyone’s approval. He knows (or he thinks he knows) what he is, and he accepts it. He wants to be accepted for who he knows he is, and that’s why Naruto is able to get through to him, because Naruto understands exactly what he’s been through and can accept him for the good and the bad. This is what makes Gaara realize that it’s possible for others to accept him for who he is as well, and he begins to establish relationships with his siblings.
Fast forward three years. Gaara has become Kazekage. He’s friends with his siblings, and many of Naruto’s friends as well. He put a lot of hard work into establishing himself as a respected leader, and I feel like, at that point, he had really come to terms with himself. He knows who he is and who he was, and he knows that things change and that people come and go. He’s happy with his small close-knit circle, and he doesn’t care about outside validation because he’s spent years being independent. The only remaining hurt he has comes from Yashamaru’s betrayal (understandably), but he seems to accept it is what it is.
Naruto spends two and a half years away from everyone, hiding because he’s a jinchuuriki, honing his skills in order to chase down Sasuke. Most of his motivations are external. He comes back to the village and everyone has changes and that is uncomfortable for him (though it’s some consolation that they missed him).
I still can’t think of a time where anyone is openly praising him until after the fight with Pein, where he becomes known as the hero of Konoha...and I feel like even that would be a bit of a hollow victory for him because ultimately he failed and it was Kyuubi that came to the rescue.
More fast forwarding to when Gaara fights the resurrected Fourth Kazekage during the war. His father tells him that he ordered Yashamaru to kill him. That Yashamaru and his mother really did love him. We see that this finally closes one of the most painful open wounds that Gaara has carried with him for his entire life. This is the point where he really can put his main insecurities to rest and fully heal. The most traumatic events of his life finally make sense, and while they still bring up painful memories, it’s like the hole in his heart has been sealed (I’m explaining this poorly but there’s a really good YouTube video about this by Sage’s Rain called ‘What is Love’). We see later during the Infinite Tsukuyomi that Gaara’s dream is to just have a happy loving family (and Naruto). I think it’s at this point we can see that Gaara is finally completely confident in himself.
Meanwhile, Naruto makes friends with Kyuubi (”I’m coming for all that hate in you too”). Besides the Sage of the Six paths, no one had ever befriended a tailed beast--but it’s just in Naruto’s nature, he won’t give up, he will make friends, and he won’t let go. He states multiple times throughout the series that he feels like he’s the only one who can understand Sasuke’s pain, and that he’s okay if they fight each other to the death. He “needs” to save Sasuke, he can’t let their friendship get away from him. The second time they fight in the Valley of the End, he does not give up. Sasuke is the one who finally gives up. Naruto needs Sasuke, he needs their friendship, he needs that external validation.
The series (at least the anime and ch. 699 of the manga) end without Naruto becoming Hokage. But wasn’t that his whole goal from the very beginning? To become Hokage because...because he wanted the village to acknowledge him. He deeply craves that love and affection that he was missing throughout his childhood (and adolescence for that matter). The series ends with him “getting Sasuke back” because his real end game was to get that acknowledgement, that attention, that affection.
SO
All of that was a really long-winded ramble-y way of saying that I 100% think Naruto would have a praise kink, whereas Gaara wouldn’t be that affected by praise (at least, not any more than the average person). Also Gaara compliments Naruto left and right, and Naruto would be so weak to that. And once Gaara figured that out, he would be just be nonstop with the praise and the random compliments because he wants Naruto to feel safe and loved and wanted too.

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day Three Hundred Fifty-Nine: Community ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyūga Hinata, Uzumaki Naruto ] [ SasuHina ] [ Verse: A Light Amongst Shadows ] [ AO3 Link ]
“I just...I don’t understand!”
“That’s my point. You don’t. And given your perspective, I’m not sure you ever will.”
“What happened wasn’t the fault of everyone in the village. So why do you blame them?”
“I don’t! I blame them for their complacency! You’ve known the truth since Obito confronted you on the way to Tetsu no Kuni. He told you everything…! What the council, and the Hokage, and Danzō did to my clan. To my brother, to me…! Someone you claim to care about, to understand! But rather than address it - rather than finally come to terms with my goals, and what I needed for closure and justice - it was like you never heard a word. All you cared about was dragging my ass back to Konoha, whether I wanted it or not.”
“Because it’s your home! Your community! Where your friends are! Where your family lived -”
“And died. Or more accurately, were massacred by my own government. No trials, no publicity...just outright murder. You think I wanted to be dragged back to the place where my family was butchered and then sold for parts by Danzō? Where the rest of the council that organized the Uchiha genocide are not only still alive, but in power…? You think I wanted to come back here without any hint of justice? No mention from you, or Sakura, or Kakashi about addressing the massacre. Nothing. Not a word, or a whisper. Because from the time I left, my goals and my pain didn’t matter to you. All that did was your entitlement to my time and person. You call me a friend, but when have you ever done anything to help me accomplish the only goal I’ve had since I was seven years old?”
Naruto, breath heavy with emotion, has no answer.
Sasuke stares back, his own - somehow - calmer. “...you tell me that my friends are here. Maybe they are. But until I get apologies - and action - regarding what befell my clan at the hands of the village you love so much...I can’t call you a friend. My clan was the only thing that mattered to me. Konoha had mistreated them based on the actions of one man for generations. Treated them, at times, as second class citizens. My father’s attempts to have talks regarding the tensions between them were always met with stony silence. He felt he had no choice, for the sake of his people, to rebel against the ones holding them hostage. They held us to Madara’s actions, even as we turned our backs on him and remained loyal to Konoha. Tobirama gave us the police force, but never gave up his suspicion and ire. We were kept in a back corner of the village, separate from everyone. When the Kyūbi attacked, we were blamed. And in the end...we told the truth. It wasn’t us. It was Obito, acting on Madara’s orders. The man we turned against in favor of a village that then never trusted us despite our loyalty. And for that...all but one of us is now dead.
“...I know that the people of Konoha aren’t to blame for the massacre. That lays on the shoulders of four people, two of which are now dead...one of which I had to do myself. So you have a choice, Naruto. You can blindly accept the actions of your village’s council - refuse to do anything to address their crimes - or you can step up and act like the Hokage you want to be. You can look at this injustice, and do something about it.” A dark eye narrows. “...or I will. No more swallowing the truth for Konoha’s benefit. Its foundation is built on the bones of my clan. I will see justice done, one way or another. What side of history do you want to be on?”
“...Sasuke…”
“Until you and the others make up your minds, I don’t want to hear from you. As long as you stand silent on this...you don’t have the right to my time.” Turning on a heel, Sasuke leaves his teammate’s apartment.
He knew it would be pointless. Knew that his team was still too blinded by village loyalty to consider removing the poisoned roots. But on the off chance that he could get some increment of the truth through Naruto’s thick skull, he had to try.
And look where it gets him.
He knows there’s still recovery going on. From the destruction wrought by Pein, from the war...in the grand scheme of things, justice for a crime a decade old - no matter its scale - has to wait.
...but he doesn’t want to wait forever.
Even now, the sting of his team’s inaction and silence after learning what Konoha’s elders had done boils his blood...but he’s working on his temper. Koharu and Homura still have to answer for their actions. Hiruzen and Danzō are dead. Once some kind of justice is done to those who remain...he’ll be satisfied.
...but beyond that, he wants the truth known. The price the Uchiha paid the ultimate price for the stability of the village that betrayed them. He wants every citizen - shinobi and civilian alike - to know just what that stability has cost him. So that it can weigh on them as it weighs on him.
He won’t let this be forgotten. Buried. Lost to time and the sins of a system he will help change.
Outside Naruto’s apartment, the weather has turned overcast, the first few drops of rain beginning to fall as he shuts the door, crouching atop the railing before hopping his way down rooftops and balconies to the street below. It doesn’t bother him. In fact, he finds it more than appropriate.
Even now, the people of Konoha look to him warily, distrust in their eyes. He wonders how those looks will change once they realize what drove him. What still drives him.
...he wonders if they ever will.
Water soon begins to drip from his fringe, the hair bouncing with every release of weight. He doesn’t mind the rain. It’s hardly about to make him ill.
But someone else notices.
“...Sasuke-kun?”
For a sliver of a moment, the name irks him. Sakura still calls him that. But this isn’t Sakura. The tone is far too soft, far more polite than her grating, attention-demanding recitals of his name. Instead, a glance to a nearby shop overhang reveals a growingly-familiar face.
Hyūga Hinata.
Their mutual connections have meant being thrown together rather often since his return a few weeks ago. While she was so unnoticeable before he left he barely knew her, he’s still become aware of how much she’s changed. Possibly the most out of anyone in their year, if he’s to be honest.
“...Hyūga.”
“...um...did you forget an umbrella?”
“Left before I knew I’d need one. It’s not about to kill me.”
“No, but…” Her brow gives a funny little furrow: torn between hesitation and determination. “...would you like to use mine?”
“I’m fine, Hyūga.”
“But -?”
He gives a roll of his eyes alongside a sigh. “...fine. I’m just going home, anyway.”
“O...okay.” Unfurling the thing, she steps up alongside him, and a glance reminds him of how much shorter she is than him. The lavender umbrella is actually fairly wide, and keeps most of the rain off them both.
“Were you...out for a walk?”
“Hm?”
“Well, I just...I noticed you aren’t carrying anything, so…”
“I was visiting Naruto.”
“...oh!”
“It didn’t go well.”
“...oh. I’m...sorry to hear that.”
“He’s just being his typical bullheaded self.” Hinata, as it turns out, is one of the few people most privy to the whole affair. Not that Sasuke minds - if anything, he’s glad to know someone else is aware.
Especially since she’s been a rather vocal voice taking his side.
The Hyūga, after all, are distant relatives of the Uchiha. While he hardly calls them kin, they’re the most similar to his late clan, in both terms of skills and power. And Hinata’s experiences - while hardly to the scale of his own - grant her a unique perspective on the matter...along with an understanding.
She offers a soft sigh. “...may I ask what...was said?”
“He seems to think that I need to relax and just try to adjust back into the village. It’s like he’s not considering my point about the council at all. Something has to be done. I won’t stand for anything less. But it’s like he wants me to just...pretend none of it happened. Waltz around Konoha like I never left. Rejoin the community. Like I can just open up my arms and everything will be how it was. Or...how he thought it was.”
“...Naruto-kun does seem to have a bit of a, um...rose-tinted view of the village’s politics,” Hinata replies, tone a bit dry. “...even after all that happened with the Hyūga, and with Neji-nīsan, he hasn’t approached us about his supposed promise to help us reform the branched clan policy. It’s been Neji and I heading that front. It can’t and w-won’t be so easy for you to adjust back to life in the village...especially when the people responsible for your clan’s genocide are still walking free.”
“Exactly.”
Her gaze averts downward. “...I’m sorry. I w-wish there was a way to make this easier. It’s been said been said before, but...please don’t forget that the Hyūga are with you. We’re prepared to help whatever way we can. But...we can’t act on our own. The other clans need to be made aware. Otherwise...I’m afraid the revelation will spark panic and mistrust.”
“As it should, honestly,” Sasuke mutters. “An entire clan was wiped out without fair trial or a proper audience. Any other clan, should they ever have a grievance severe enough, could be next. Of course...none of them have the relationship with the long-standing Senju-biased power in Konoha that my clan did. But once they know what happened...it’ll be a very real concern.”
“Exactly. So...we have to handle this delicately. But...that does still mean we have to handle it.”
By now, the pair have wandered out toward the clan districts, the Hyūga gates coming up first. The Uchiha clan no longer has a gate: just a large, empty field where the land was re-leveled after Pein’s assault, sans for the house Sasuke’s been built.
After a brief silence, Hinata offers, “...I’m sure Naruto-kun and the others will c-come around. It’s just...complicated. I’m sure they want justice for you. But...we all have our other strings attached we h-have to account for.”
Sasuke sighs. “...I know. But until it’s made known, I’ll never just fit in the way Naruto wants me to. To everyone but a handful, I’m a criminal and a traitor only pardoned due to my ties to the Rokudaime and the village hero.”
Her expression falls. “...it isn’t fair. But...w-we’ll get there. And...hopefully we can help this community rebuild, in ways b-better than it was before. Konoha isn’t perfect, and...addressing its wrongs and shadows is important to help us more forward into a new era of peace. For all of us.”
For some reason, her words seem to really resound in his chest. All of us. Meaning him, too. Rebuild the community...hm…
An idea worming its way into his head, he comes to a stop with her at the Hyūga gate. “...thanks for listening.”
“Any time, Sasuke-kun. Do you...want to take my umbrella with you?”
“I’ll be fine, but thanks. It’s not much further.”
“All right. If you need anything...don’t hesitate to ask, ne?”
For a brief moment, a corner of his mouth flickers. “...I’ll keep that in mind.”
“...enjoy your evening, Sasuke-kun.”
“You too.”
Watching her head into the compound, he then turns and makes to conquer the last distance before home. He feels a lot...calmer now. Funny how talking with her always seems to do that, even if they really don’t talk that much.
...maybe that’s sort of the point.
Still...her words about working on Konoha’s interior have the cogs in his mind turning. There might be something to that...but, one step at a time.
                                                           .oOo.
     A bit more of my 'canon' verse cuz...that was the first thing to come to mind with this one!      My interpretation for Sasuke in this verse is not just all sunshine and rainbows with his team after the war. I, for one, CANNOT accept the Uchiha massacre just being swept under the rug the way it is in 700+. Cuz let's be real, a boy - man - who fought for justice for more than half his life, for a decade, wouldn't just shrug off genocide because his friend wants him to forget and just...go back and play house with his team that has, in all reality, done very little to support him and justice for his clan even AFTER learning the truth.      Hence doing things my way ;3 (And just as a heads up / reminder, no, I don't debate my view of things in comments, be it plot or characterization or relationships between characters. This is my interpretation. You're free to yours. Debating said topics is not what I'm here to do, since I've gotten some rather confrontational comments on the subject before, lol. This is a fanfic, not a forum for discussion. No likey, take hikey.)      ANYWHO, it's late, and I gotta head to bed! Thanks for reading~

Prompt: “Losing you was the most unbearable pain I’ve ever felt.”
Title: Promises
Ship: Sasuke Uchiha X Sakura Haruno
Words: 1938
Rating: T
Tumblr media
Sitting on a couch in the lavish, new apartment that he was relocated to, Sasuke Uchiha looked anywhere but at the unexpectedly quiet, pink haired kunoichi right in front of him. For a brief moment, his wandering mismatched orbs met the obsidian ones of a pale guy named Sai, who is supposed to keep an eye on him for his month long house arrest. The weirdly stoic man stared at him from the far end of the living room, where he was standing comfortably with a sketch pad and a brush in hand. Sasuke averted his attention right back to his ex-teammate. Ever since his pardon (courtesy of Kakashi) for his many unwarranted crimes during his years as a missing S class nin, he had noticed the subtle change in her behavior. Its understandable that they aren’t the same teens who were put together under team 7 yet Sakura was never this guarded around him. It was almost as if she was trying to keep their encounters to the bare minimum, only stopping by to do a quick checkup on his healing wounds and his lost arm. Usually Naruto was around them to diffuse the awkwardness in such situations but unfortunately, the hyperactive blond wasn’t available that day. Something to do with him bidding farewell to his friends from the neighboring lands.
There could be numerous reasons pertaining to her silent treatment but Sasuke didn’t have the patience to mull over all of them and figure it out by himself. The only other option he was left with was to confront her about it. But having hurt her more than once due to his resolve for revenge and revolution, he didn’t know how to strike a normal conversation with her. The last time he uttered something to her was at the Valley of the End, where he had sincerely apologized to her. From then on, it had been just her looking after him at the hospital, narrating fascinating tales about her experiences as a medical ninja whilst he barely nodded his head.
Sasuke sighed. It had always been a one-sided effort— him paying no interest to anything other than his goals as she worked hard on maintaining their delicate bond. But he didn’t want things to remain that way any longer. He didn’t want his soul to stay shrouded in the darkness associated with his clan. If not more, he atleast owed her just as much importance as she gave to their every second spent together. She was generous enough to forgive him for everything he’d done and accepted him with her warm smile. She had let her tormented heart trust him yet again so easily that he wanted to become a man worthy of her forgiveness.
“Sakura,” he tried, hoping his query will reach across her by the shear intensity of his gaze.
The said woman however, didn’t spare him a glance. She was too focused on patching a partially healed cut on the left side of his lower abdomen. “Sasuke-kun,” she replied simply, signifying that she had heard him, her other palm gliding along his bare torso in search of any injuries she might have missed before.
He was glad that even after years of separation she didn’t drop the endearing suffix whenever she addressed him. To a stranger it may seem like nothing but to him, the small gesture meant that she still regarded him with the same level of admiration she did years ago. However, her response didn’t help steer the conversation anywhere.
Sasuke shut his mouth tight, his tongue pressing against the inner wall of his cheek in annoyance. Had it been any other time where she wasn’t mad at him for reasons unknown, she’d have said a few more words, making this whole thing a lot simpler for the both of them. But that day, she just wasn’t in the mood to waste her energy in idle chitchat.
With the examination done, Sakura placed her palms gently on either side of his face and angled it up. A pair of onyx and mauve clashed with refreshing emeralds and Sasuke gulped, watching her send spasms of her soothing chakra through his ocular network. The strain in his eyes reduced comparatively and Sakura let go of his face.
“There. Now you won’t have to stay in Konoha after your probation ends.” The words slipped out of her lips absentmindedly and her pupils dilated in shock. Probably because she wasn’t supposed to say that directly to him.
Sasuke took in a long breath, his calm demeanor replaced by slight irritation. Was that what it was about? Him leaving the village as soon as he was back in shape? He didn’t want to believe that his friend and lover since childhood wasn’t speaking to him over something as insignificant as this. Throughout his trial, the five Kages as well as their subordinates discussed various forms of punishment for him but it was he himself who chose that in the end. He pledged to travel around the allied nations, aid each land in repairing all the damage and inconvenience he had caused as a miscreant and even handle other wrongdoers if he happened upon them during the journey. It was his first step towards redemption— a suggestion that the jury readily agreed to because everyone was excited to give orders to and make Sasuke Uchiha dance to their whims. And so, of all the people he’s acquainted with in the Hidden Leaf Village, he had hoped that his former team would be supportive of his decisions from then on.
“Sakura..” he mumbled, unsure of how to proceed. How was he supposed to convince someone who had always readily understood him without him having to explain a word of it?
“Don’t..” she said, bringing a hand up to stop him, “You have no idea.”
He motioned his lips to try and make her realize how necessary this was for him yet she shook her head and went on, “Do you know how hard it is when your genuine feelings are shrugged off as a mere teenage crush? Do you know how difficult it is when everyone expects you to give up on your very own emotions? Do you!?” her tone escalated and she lowered her head to obscure the fresh tears falling down her eyes, “No you don’t. You do not understand it Sasuke-kun, you can’t! No one can..”
He bit the insides of his cheeks, his only hand twitching to wipe her tears away yet he resisted the urge, afraid of her reaction to his touch— to the touch of the same man who had harmed her on more occasions than protect her..
“Losing you was the most unbearable pain I’ve ever felt.” She stated with a sob, tilting her head up to let him witness the honesty in her tearful gaze. “I can’t lose you again..”
It was true that he didn’t understand. He wasn’t able to comprehend how a woman as benevolent, loving and beautiful as herself came to give her heart to someone so malign like him. He knew it was rude of him to ask for more of her when she had always given her best but he had to do this. She could hate him for the time being– god how he wished she’d have a sliver of hatred for him hidden somewhere beneath all those thick layers of her affection but she didn’t. She was too good to have any sorts of negative emotions towards him.
“I must do thi–”
“Stop lying to me, Sasuke-kun.” She cut him off, a bitter smile gracing her cherry lips, “Just admit that I’m not enough for you to stay. That I never will be..”
For the first time since his return to Konoha, Sasuke’s composed countenance wavered, shock momentarily flitting across his face. Subconsciously, he covered the dormant cursed seal on his neck and turned his head to the side. He had always considered her the small but strong flicker of joy in his rather desolate life so hearing her belittle herself irked him. Had he known that his plans about the travel were causing her this much distress and self-doubt, he would’ve talked to her sooner.
“I admit it.” He spoke, turning his head back to flash her an earnest gaze. “I admit that I can never understand the anguish of your heart. And I do acknowledge your indelible love for me. I’m grateful, Sakura..” He said, wishing somehow his words would express the sincerity in them. “But I can’t answer your feelings right now. I..I’m not worthy of them..”
“Sasuke-kun!” she literally yelled in disappointment. It was her turn to get irritated at his self-loathing. “I told you that I don’t hold you responsible for any of that. We both hurt each-other and..I have put those happenings far behind.”
“Have you now?” he asked pointedly and she bit her bottom lip hesitantly. “Have you, Sakura? If so, then why won’t you let me do the same?”
Her lips quivered then, all her pent up fury and agony unleashing like a wildfire as she broke down into loud sobs. Sasuke noticed how shaky her feet were and immediately wrapped his lone arm around her waist, helping her settle down on the couch next to him. But she paid no heed to his act for she was too busy weeping and wiping her tears, struggling with the sudden shattering of her emotions. And Sasuke watched. He made sure to capture the whole scenario with the power of his eyes..to have a recorded evidence of how much he had bruised the heart of the only woman who had truly and unselfishly cared for him..loved him!
“I..what if you don’t retur–”
His palm instantly clamped over her tear-soaked lips, desisting her from finishing that ominous sentence. This was what he wanted to bring an end to— people actively doubting him. He wanted to prove that he was way above his past, hateful self. He wanted people to trust him like they used to when he was still a willing citizen of this village. But most of all, he wanted to restore that blinding faith she had in him. And for that, he needed to leave. It was mandatory for him to pay the price of sins and redeem himself.
“I will never cause you misery again. I swear this on my pride as an Uchiha. I won’t tarnish your your soul any more than this. So please..have some faith in me.” He spoke as tenderly as he could, reaching out his hand to hold her dainty palm in his calloused one and gave a squeeze in assurance.
The glassy eyes of the pinkette faltered at his words, a mix of shock and pride swimming in them. And just like that, she allowed her head to nod slowly, a timid smile curving upon her lips. She allowed her scarred self to have faith in him.
“I’ll be back to you. And then, we can figure work out this unspoken whatever I have for you..” he added, as if to solidify the foundation of his previous statements.
More tears cascaded down her cheeks— happy tears! And she squeezed his palm in return. “Then, I’ll wait for you. Always..”
Silence took over the room yet again, the two young adults exchanging their sentiments through their meaningful gazes. They were too lost in their own little world to even take note of the pale, ex-root nin observing them the whole time, capturing those sequence of events not just in his memory but also on a fresh page of his sketchpad.
