what did you study to get better at anatomy? did you follow tutorials or was it a lot of throwing stuff at walls till it stuck? did u reference like. statues, other fictional characters, real people or stock photos. sorry if its a lot of questions, i'm just overwhelmed on where to start for improving my anatomy ^_^''

Mostly I paid attention to when things look right in other people's art and in my own body. Like 70% of me knowing how to draw anything in any way is just me staring intensely at many things, like watching my posture in the mirror or seeing how someone draws a fist, stuff like that. In my experience, stock photos don't work great for me because they ARE real so they tend to be a bit less dynamic? I do take liberties. But photo refs are good for specific body parts or for base skeletal structure.

You can also find good tutorials on basic body shapes (like the flat-curve thing the legs often do) that can help with understanding what you're looking at.

To me nothing beats looking at your own body and paying attention to the muscles, bones, sinews, where they go, how they twist etc.

I really love your art style! ♥️ Do you have any recommendations for tutorials on learning to draw digitally? I know I could just look at little micro tutorials but I’m autistic so I need really specific instructions step by step to get started

Hey thanks! Honestly I am not good at digital art as much as traditional. Also, this question is pretty vague and you havent reblogged/liked anything of mine so Im not sure which artwork you might be referring to... if you mean pixel art, digital paintings, commissions Ive done, etc

But, I have a HUGE tag full of art resources that are 90% for digital art because I also had a really hard time getting started!

If you want to scroll through my #art ref tag, I have been compiling resources for almost a decade.

Here is a small tutorial Ive been pulling up for years to look at whenever I forget how to digitally paint, that just shows exactly how the artist does layering, shading, etc

Also, Tutor Tuesday is a BUNCH of tutorials that are all about very specific things (hair, faces, animals, lining in general, sketching in general, you name it) , in fully illustrated guides so you can see step-by-step how to do it. This is the best resource I can find for beginning digital art

Also check the users I reblog tutorials from, if the above aren't really what youre looking for. Drawingden, etheringtonbrothers, and art-tutorials-n-references are all good pages to follow if you want to see more guides!

Talk Shop Tuesday: what’s your gif making process look like?

let’s pretend I answered this on tuesday and not saturday 🫣

my gif making process boils down to I get obsessed with an idea and can’t think about anything else until I finish that idea. whether it’s a parallel I noticed or a lyric or quote that screams so and so ship or a new effect I want to try, I get obsessed.

in that obsession I get so particular about the exact scene and underlying meaning of even the dialogue of the scene I use in a gif. I want it to match the feeling of whatever copy will go along with it perfectly AND look pretty lmao. recently I can’t do anything without blending, it’s a problem but you know it’s me, hi, im the problem and idgaf. I typically outline & pick all my scenes way before I even open ps, down to the caption I want.

in ps my favorite layers are curves & selective color and im weird and stubborn and refuse to use multiple of the same type of layer 💀 almost always do I add some bright vibrant color bc why not and then add like three different effects including the typography bc also why not. and then i post and hope like hell it doesn’t flop bc I just spent hours adding color and fun effects.

finally there’s so many ideas that get left on the cutting room floor due to lack of time which is probably the most depressing part of my gif making process.

Hi! I’m CatboyBiologist.

Formerly a femboy, now a trans woman just starting HRT, and a PhD student in molecular biology. I started using this online persona as a fun, shitposty way to explore gender a few years ago. I post selfies (generally sfw, but somewhat sexy, so minors and ppl who don’t like that have been warned), rambles about science, tutorials and advice from the stuff I’ve learned by being a femboy in the past, nature pictures, stuff about the ocean, my adorable grumpy little tortoise, and unsolicited opinions on random nerdy topics. Any pronouns are fine. I don’t plan to socially transition for a while, and still present as a man most of the time, so I’m used to whatever you wanna use for me (for now, I’ll update this if that changes). Please send me pictures of your pets or other cute animals in your life!

As a scientist, I’m also documenting my transition! This google sheet will be updated at least monthly. I also have additional metrics I’m keeping to myself, and pictures that go with this, but I’m not sharing them publicly yet. Keep in mind that this is just one person’s experience with HRT, and may not represent universal trends!

Adding a little something here, bc I think it was an interesting bit a writing: if you want to see me respond to a transphobe about what "biologically female" means, here's a thing I wrote about it. CW for transphobia and discussion, obviously.

Also, if any of my measurements look weird, its entirely possible I fucked up. Let me know if anything looks off!

As for terminology, I personally do think of myself as a “man who is becoming a woman” as opposed to having always been a woman. If that doesn’t resonate with your experience, I totally get that! But that’s why I freely call pre-HRT me a femboy, while still calling post-HRT me a trans woman. I’m also keeping the blog name as CatboyBiologist for the forseeable future, because at this point, Catboy just seems like a gender neutral term to me.

I’m also trying to put together a script for a podcast regarding how studying biology influenced my perspective on sex and gender- lmk if there’s any interest in that! It’s probably gonna be way too long and indulgent but oh well.
