I have a passing knowledge of Jaime Reyes' Blue Beetle from the character's appearance on SMALLVILLE, BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD and these panels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Milagro, you are so real for this.
Tumblr media
And this is where my true knowledge about Blue Beetle comes from - Ted Kord's Blue Beetle and his friendship with Booster Gold.
Blue & Gold Forever.
Tumblr media
So with only knowing the bare minimum about Jaime I was able to watch BLUE BEETLE with no expectations. It's an incredibly vibrant, fun and heartfelt film. I'm concerned at its low box-office showing, but films with bigger leads and bigger budgets have also failed at the box office, or at the very least, didn't recoup it's budget and marketing. There has never been anything that was a guaranteed box office success. I would rather it tried to get eyes in theaters than get lost on HBO Max where it was originally slated for release. Here's hoping National Cinema Day on Aug 27th (where theaters are selling tickets for $4 for all formats) will bring more people to the tent.
Too true.
Tumblr media
My thoughts on BLUE BEETLE
Tumblr media
Nothing but SPOILERS.
Tumblr media
THE GOOD
Xolo Maridueña (COBRA KAI) is a great Jaime. If you have seen Maridueña across these five seasons of COBRA KAI, it's not surprising. He has shown consistently that he can play humour, dutifulness, vulnerable and excel at action.
Big up to COBRA KAI's annual blow-out fight sequence.
youtube
Oddly enough, at the end of the film I didn't think we got to know Jaime beyond a cursory level, but I'm sure if they did a deep dive on him I would complain about that too as my issue with origin story films is that so much real estate is given to building up the history of the character, that the plot and action seems relegated to the final act. But I guess BLUE BEETLE gave us all we need to know about Jaime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good egg, duty bound, gets hard from hugs (and kudos to this film for actually having a character who gets horny. Comic book films are nearly always a sexless thing, but my guy Jaime pulling his shirt down to cover his crotch after Jenny's (Bruna Marquezine) tale of woe was refreshing.)
-Really liked Jenny Kord. She wasn't the typical damsel in distress. She's formidable in her own right. She and Jaime doesn't feel rushed or shoehorned in. I especially loved the fact that they didn't just make her the love interest,
Though she and Xolo are great together,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but also gave her - in the Reyes - a new family. If she and Jaime were to go pear-shaped we can just know that Jenny still has a place within the Reyes clan.
-We have not one, but two new members to the Legion of Great DCEU Family Members. Joining the mom and dad of SHAZAM, AQUAMAN's dad, THE FLASH's mom is BLUE BEETLE's Alberto Reyes (Damián Alcázar) and Nana Reyes (the Oscar nominated Adriana Barraza).
Still waters run deep and Nana proved that. She's not just up in her room sewing and watching reruns of "María la del Barrio". She is sitting back waiting to showcase her experiene while fighting in the revolution.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Alberto Reyes! He was this film's King T'Chaka. Always with a wise word, strong, caring. I hate that he had to die and I think it's a worn out trope that a hero has to suffer loss in order to come into their greatness, but it worked. Long Live Alberto Reyes!
Tumblr media
Just enough George Lopez to not be annoying. He's funny, but only in small doses IMO so he was just good enough and used well enough that it wasn't eye-rolling. I really loved that he wasn't just there for the obvious comic relief, instead Uncle Rudy is a brain.
The opening along had me hyped. It set the tone and it lent to idea of the scarab being from space, but the inclusion of a classic Blue Beetle comic sketch just ::chef's kiss:
-Director Ángel Manuel Soto listed which stories he pulled from for this film,
Tumblr media
but I see a lot of BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD episode "Fall of the Blue Beetle" in the bits where they go to Ted Kord's home/lab.
-The way they took OMAC/Kevin Kho backstory and merged it with Carapex's. In the comics OMAC was a Cambodian child of war, in this film Ignacio/Carapex was left an orphan and trained by the School of the Americas (rebranded Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) whose training manuals advocated tortuing and blackmailing civilians. Using Kord Industries as not just a amorphous shady big tech corp, BLUE BEETLE's writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and Soto tied Kord Industries to the realties of what big corporations are doing globally.
This ties into another thing I loved about the film - it had a strong cultural identity. From Nana using Vivaporú (Vicks Vapor Rub) as smelling salts to rouse Jamie, to El Chapulín Colorado(!!!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The idea of gentrification that affects people across colour lines and specifically targets people of lower income.
The full integration of Jaime and Khaji-Da being exemplified by Khaji-Da (voiced by singer/actor Becky G) speaking Spanish.
THE BAD
-Is there someone with less screen prescence than Susan Sarandon? I don't know how she was ever a thing. I guess they needed a "name" but there several other actors like Anjelica Huston or Sigourney Weaver who would have done something more with that role. Carla Gugino. Anyone else!
-The establishing CGI of Kord Entrerprises was basura. There was a tangible change in F/X as if mid way through post-production they found out WB-Discovery was moving it to theatrical release and they effects crew got a cash infusion.
-While I came around on the character towards the end, I wasn't a fan of Milagro. Glad they aged her up but she fell into the trope of annoying movie sibling and it grated.
Tumblr media
THE REST
-Harvey Guillen's character died in the film (good!) and he appears to be dead again on HARLEY QUINN (not good. There is no way Nightwing's death sticks).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Soto and James Gunn says that Jaime has a future in the DCU. While an interview snippet is making the rounds where Soto says he would like Jason Sudeikis (TED LASSO) to play Ted Kord, I don't really believe that is true as the source is from an online site I'm not familiar with and people lie for clicks.
Yes, Buster. All. The. Time.
Tumblr media
-While comics! Jaime lives in El Paso, Texas, film! Jaime lives in Palmera City - on El Paso St. - which was created for the film (and appeared in the comics months ahead in a tie-in). Soto found inspiration in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico. But I wonder what Palmera City's real-world city will be when James Gunn finishes the DC Map that he say is being redone. Maybe because over the years Metropolis has been Chicago/Delaware/New York.
Metropolis is not in Delaware, GTFOH.

Contentedly curled up on an 18th floor balcony enjoying his chew in the ocean air.
Tzapo continues to be the best boy. My partner is often so busy we barely see each other and she has a couple of days free of appointments. So we took a spontaneous overnight trip to the beach (because beach hotels offer really cheap deals on last minute bookings to get rooms filled so it's financially not a big deal). In addition to the long car ride, today he has gone to a pharmacy, two different grocery stores, and is staying with us in a non pet-friendly hotel. Which has us on the 18th floor. He's had many people gawk and point at him and children who wanted his attention. But he's taken it all in stride, even the incredibly strong winds as a storm rolls through right now. He's just an impressive little dog, all things considered.
I'm really just so proud of him. Xolos aren't the typical service dog candidate although I don't think Xolo service dogs are unicorns either. But he's blown me away so often. I have so much love in my heart for this little dog - too much to properly express.

Heyo, you also a member of the “I believe in Xavier having a dog supremacy” club? If so, what breed do you think Xavier has?
Okay so I do an AU for fun with some friends around Solitude, and I went to them for feedback since we agree Xavier would have a dog, and the final verdict was that he would have two dogs: a doberman and a xoloitzcuintli
Doberman are excellent guard dogs, very protective and extremely intelligent. I mean really, would you wanna mess with a guy that has one of these around? I wouldn't
Tumblr media
Xolos are an old breed from Mexico that were said to guide the dead in the afterlife (which is fitting for a place that would have a lot of dead people thanks to the colosseum games). They're also very protective, loyal, make great watchdogs, and also good companions and goofballs around those they trust (sounds familiar, doesn't it?). Ever seen the movie Coco? That dog is one of those. Also since they're typically hairless, they need sweaters and such when cold. Look at this little guy!!

I'm gonna share some Flipline LGBT/Family Headcannons I have lol
Family
Chuck, Utah, and Nevada are all siblings. Chuck is the middle child, and moved to Tastyville when he turned 18
Taylor and Indigo are siblings, and Hank is their Dad. Taylor's kind of cut contact with both (mental health issues) but he and Indigo are making an effort to reconnect
Peggy and Austin are cousins! Peggy's still dreading the day he gets to be taller than her.
I read this in a fanfic (My Dearest Matilde by @yakkolicious) but Big Pauly being Penny's dad is something I totally sign off on
@magicmindless first headcannoned this but, Mary and James are siblings. James got the short end of the stick when it came to cat allergies :/
Gabitha is Treble's half sister and they either want to throw her out of a window or get her to just. Do better things with her life
Speaking of which NuMarcus is Taylor's Uncle and Taylor never wants to speak to him ever again (once was enough >:|)
Radlynn and Sarge Fan are twins and eagerly talk about their evil twisted hyperfixations
Timm is Lisa's adopted brother (based on that one Christmas image with the X twins)
Xandra is scared of big crowds and typically clings onto Xolo or Edna if they're stuck in one together. No one else, even her friends, gets this treatment.
Yippy is Wally's granddaughter! He's her number one customer.
Wylan's mom died when he was in 6th grade and was part of the reason for the move
Sue and Prudence are sisters. Prudence was the first person Sue came out to and the first thing she said was, "Called it"
Sexuality Headcannons (most are trans)
Rudy's a nonbinary he/him lesbian. Marty is the sole boy of the group
Mary and Sue are married! Their pugs were the flower girls. Love wins!
Transmasc Utah! They/Them Pronouns but they will accept he/him on occasion
Gremmie's also a transman and helped Utah realize they were also cisn't! The two are best friends.
Scooter's actually transfem, but still uses He/him Pronouns because they're fun
Penny and Alberto are T4T and started HRT when they were 15 (Alberto started a year before Penny though)
Cooper's trans and Prudence didn't realize this until he mentioned he wouldn't be at work for two weeks due to his top surgery. His binding game was off the fucking charts.
Cookie is a Devon Rex. Cooper decided on this breed because he knew how bad James' allergies were and had a big crush on him but still wanted a cat.
Quinn and Timm got a divorce because Quinn realized she was a lesbian. Timm leaving the company without warning afterwards was what ticked her off.
Wylan is transmasc, and his dad fully supports him. He even helped Wylan attain his first binder.
Mousse bullied Allan throughout highschool for "being gay" (he was bisexual) and then when he grew up he realized that A. Whippa's a lesbian (that's when his support began) and B. HE DOESN'T EVEN LIKE WOMEN.
Roy and Moe are constantly on the verge of asking the other out but are both too socially awkward to do so. Ninjoy actually beat Dynamoe once because flirting with the pizza boy is more important than murding his archenemy.
Chuck and Taylor are dating, they just don't remember when the hell they even started. The B in their Bromance faded out so subtly and they never brought it up to each other until after someone asked them when they started dating.
Nonbinary Taylor! He genuinely does not give a fuck about Pronouns but if you ask you'll probably get he/they.
Transfem Mindy! She helped Liezel figure out that she was also trans.

DP HC - Ghostly Auras
I hc that most ghosts have an ominous, deathly, oppressive aura to them that typically weirds animals out & scares them. The stronger the ghost, the more strongly it's felt.
Humans usually only feel it on a subconscious level until the higher levels &, to them, every ghost has a slightly different feel to it. For instance, Skulker feels like being in the presence of a predator. (The animal kingdom kind.) While monarchs generally bring to mind being in the presence of a king that could easily have you beheaded at any moment.
Animals just feel a general predatorness.
However, that's just with animals in-general. There are some animals that are almost unaffected by the auras of ghosts unless they specifically register as being a threat, like with Pariah Dark or Dan.
Such animals are generally associated with death or interacts with spirits in one way or another. Things like cats, bats, snakes, & quite a few birds such as cardinals, bluebirds, owls, & vultures, but specifically corvids including but not limited to crows, ravens, & magpies. Several bugs such as worms, spiders, dragonflies, as well as moths & butterflies alike. Not to mention, certain canines such as the xolo dogs of Mexico, the hyenas of Africa, & the jackals of Egypt.
However, tutelaries like Danny have an aura slightly different. While there's still the deathly feeling to it, it's more a formidable feeling, like being around someone powerful that you know won't attack you. They give off a sense of comfort & safety to those that ally with them or are being protected by them, but of judgement & coming justice to those that oppose them.
However, there's still a hint of danger surrounding tutelaries that tells people to be wary on instinct. It's almost a contradictory feeling in a way.
For Danny, specifically, it's the feeling of being around a strong & capable soldier that you know would do anything to protect you. Until he bested Pariah, then it slowly turned into that of a strong & courageous soldier crowned king for his good deeds, then after his coronation, that of a benevolent ruler.
As such, animals don't outright run from or attack him, but they are instinctively wary of him.
After the accident, but before the Lunch Lady's first attack, (which was went Danny's Obsession first began to form) animals avoided Danny as he still registered to them as being a predator, but after his Obsession fully formed, they started to register him as being more of a predator who's food source decidedly wasn't them.
However, animals that are around him frequently enough will begin to recognize that he's a protector & will treat him like an alpha & someone to be respected, but it takes a lot of time & association for them to eventually get there. A lot more so than usual & even pets that are generally very friendly by nature tend to be wary of him at first, but not in a "this person is bad" way. More so a "this is a stranger" way.
The specific animals associated with death & spirits mentioned above, on the other hand, are able to immediately recognize Danny's protective aura for what it is & instantly see him as being very much a non-threat unless attacked.
Of course, they don't really follow him or try to get his attention or anything unless they recognize him specifically. They initially just recognize him as being a non-threat until they get used to him specifically, then he slowly becomes more & more friend-shaped to them.
Like, butterflies, moths, & dragonflies will just land on him for rest even if he's moving. Corvids, cardinals, & owls will perch on his head or shoulders & just chill. Cats & bats love him though.

James Gunn has reiterated that Xolo Maridueña, along with multiple other actors who are playing characters in Blue Beetle, WILL STILL be playing their respective roles in the DCU. That means that yes, Xolo will continue to play Jaime Reyes in the DCU going forward. I will once again continue to reiterate my message that I haven't stop talking about since the beginning of this month: You should still absolutely support DC's Blue Beetle when it releases. As I said previously, here's why you should support Blue Beetle: • Blue Beetle is DC's first live action Latino superhero film • The film stars Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, Singer and Actress Becky G as the voice of the Scarab and George Lopez as Jaime's crazy uncle Rudy. • Blue Beetle is the first character in DC Studios' DCU timeline, as confirmed by DC Studios Co-Owner James Gunn • As stated above, Blue Beetle is part of the DCU world filled with superheroes. However, and thankfully, the past DCEU films are not relevant at all to Blue Beetle -- as confirmed by the movie's director Angel Manuel Soto. • Blue Beetle was made as "the first act of a saga" and is currently planned to have a trilogy, assuming the first film does well. • The Hollywood Reporter's sources believe that if Blue Beetle does do well and if it ends up getting a positive reception, Xolo Mariduena's Blue Beetle can end up appearing in the upcoming Booster Gold show. • A big focus of Blue Beetle is displaying the importance of family, as confirmed by Moviemaker.com. They want to invite viewers into the Reyes Family, showcase their culture and tell a story centered around family without it going through the typical trauma hope that we see in various Hispanic shows or movies. Today's Dog: Chinese Crested! These typically hairless dogs also have a powder puff variety, which has hair. The most famous Chinese Crested is probably Sam, who was named the ugliest dog in the nation twice in the early 2000s. They share the same hairless mutation that Xolos do.
Today's Monkee: Shorty Blackwell from Instant Replay (1969)! It features Micky and Coco Dolenz on vocals, and it's about Micky's cat!

BLUE BEETLE (2023)
Starring Xolo Maridueña, Bruna Marquezine, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, George Lopez, Elpidia Carrillo, Belissa Escobedo, Harvey Guillén, Jorge Jimenez, Eyra Aguero Joubert, Gabriella Ortiz, Vicente Ydrach, Modesto Lacen, Oshún Ramirez, Brianna Lewis, Tahj Vaughans, Dante Gonzalez-Abreu and the voice of Becky G.
Screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto.
Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. 127 minutes. Rated PG-13.
I’m not going to lie. I’ve never heard of the character of Blue Beetle before this film. When I first heard of the title, I thought it may be a movie about a Volkswagen. I asked my nephew, who is more up to date on comic book characters, what I should know about Blue Beetle, and he explained that the version of the character in the film (who is apparently the second Blue Beetle in the comic saga) is “just your normal teenage ‘relatable’ superhero.”
And yes, this Blue Beetle is sort of like a DC version of Spider-Man with a different insect and more alien tech. Beyond the Spider-Man connection, Blue Beetle also has certain connections to Iron Man (the high-tech armor suit) and Venom (symbiotic connection to the alien).
Still, I’ve got to admit, while there was nothing all that unique about the overall story of Blue Beetle – other than the fact that it is strongly grounded in Hispanic culture – the movie was a whole lot of fun. In fact, it was probably the most purely enjoyable DC film since the similarly low-key Shazam! (The first Shazam! movie that is, the second one kind of stunk.)
After the recent calamitous popular and critical crash and burn of the much higher profile The Flash (which I have to admit, I mostly liked),the new DC needed a low-key charmer like this to get back on track.
And speaking of low-key charmers, the film certainly scored one in casting Xolo Maridueña – previously best known as one of the lead characters in the series Cobra Kai – as the hero. Maridueña has the type of every-kid sense of wonder which is necessary for a character like this to work. As his uncle says, “He’s like Superman of Metropolis or the Flash of Central City — but not as good.”
He is also surrounded with an interesting and varied family unit, particularly Adriana Barraza as a surprisingly able Nana and George Lopez adding comic relief as the conspiracy theory spouting uncle.
In lots of ways, Blue Beetle is typical superhero fare – the alien trinket with unimaginable power, the evil corporation headed by a megalomaniac tycoon (Susan Sarandon) desperately trying to get her hands on the item, no matter who it hurts. (She often says the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, even though she is personally never one of the few making these sacrifices.)
However, it is not the story that makes Blue Beetle so good. It’s just so upbeat and good humored that it’s hard not to embrace, with enough off-the-beaten-path quirks to capture even someone who is getting a bit of superhero fatigue – which can be said about a lot of us at this point.
Blue Beetle is a fine reminder of why the word “comic” is part of the term “comic book.” After way too much of the DC movie universe has been dark, moody and morose – we’re looking at you Zack Snyder – it’s nice for some of these stories to just be good old-fashioned fun.

Catfishing, a Shallura Fic
Here’s a shallura fic that I’m working on~ I’ve been pulling it up every October or so and keep getting stalled, so here’s the opening. I hope you like it!
Quick summary: Witch!Allura summons Cat!Shiro to be her Familiar. But of course, he lied on his online profile. Still, she tries to keep her head up.
Allura read the directions three times over.
There was always a nervous pit in her stomach when it came to new spells. A frizzle of excitement at her fingertips; like her powers were ready to pour out of her at any moment. Allura knelt down on a blanket, as to not hurt her knees. She inhaled, steadying her hands before drawing the circle. She put the sigils on the inside, then laid alternating tributes of snowflake obsidian and Oreos over them.
Allura was glad her potential partner had sweet tooth like she did. The online profile was fitting most of her criteria in a Familiar; not too old to feel babysat by them, not too young she feels like a babysitter, a shared interest in astrology, a patient disposition, and experience in potion making.
Her dear Uncle Coran would complain that there was no fun in it anymore. The elder used to slapdash a Summoning together just to see whatever popped up. While ignoring whatever popped up was angry they were pulled away from something.
The internet expanded their worlds, yet made it seem so much smaller. Modern society didn’t know about the actual power she could wield; and Allura liked it that way. She was merely a young woman who practiced her religion. It was comforting, keeping the rituals passed down from her mother and grandmother. If the key-chains she made were never lost, or her mugs kept tea at just the right temperature, that was just a bonus.
There was only so much one could do alone, which was why she sought a Familiar. Their heightened senses and connection to magic itself aided a witch in their studies. A partner that understood their ability in its fullest, and helped it grow.
She had been trying with several these past few months. Her poor neighbors thought she was bringing her veterinary work home with her; an absentminded parrot, an overactive Xoloitzcuintle dog, a string of indecisive geckos and distracting budgies. But as Coran pointed out; Allura was a traditionalist. When she saw the listing for a house cat, it was like fate.
Allura chanted the spell softly under her breath, and placed her hands on the markings. There was a surge of power in her hands, the vertigo made her head spin. And suddenly it was over. Allura opened her eyes.
A black and white cat was in the center of the circle, as promised. Wide gray eyes were looking at her, it’s body tensed for a moment, as if ready to jump away. The profile may need updating – the picture promised a classic tuxedo, but she could see sprinklings of white hairs here and there. She could chalk it up to stress, or an outdated photo. Then she saw his front paws. There was a prosthetic made of gray and black plastic, with a shield up to his shoulder, and small parts molded to look like toes. That wasn’t typical, most feline prosthesis only had a nub to walk on. The problem was that he didn’t let her know.
She’s met with her share of liars over the internet. The Xolo dog “forgetting to mention” he hadn’t had experience in potions, a Witch and Familiar trying to add a third, an errant Demon Hunter (as if Demons existed)...it was a wonder she still tried at all.
An injury like that would require some permanent changes to her home, even if he keep his prosthetic on. Ergonomic door handles, specialized cutting boards, maybe even a shower chair? At least she already had an electric jar opener. (And Coran said it was a waste! Well, it paid for itself in pickles and kimchi more than a partner ever could!)
Allura was getting ahead of herself, as usual. She turned to the side, picking up the contract she had prepared. The unusual terms made even more sense now. “Good afternoon,” she bowed politely. “I am Allura of Clan Altea, and I ask for your partnership as a Familiar. I understand your request and have modified the standard terms.”
The Familiar blinked, then seemed to recover and bowed in turn. “Good morning Allura.” his voice was deep, held steady by composure. “I am Shiro, and I...would like a minute.” he backed up, picking up the Oreos and the contract. They seemed to disappear out of view behind him. An essential trait of a Familiar. “Do you have a bathroom I could use?”
Her welcoming smile didn’t falter, “Yes, through that hallway, first on the right.”
Shiro nodded, his feline body gracefully dipping before nearly running out of sight.
Allura waited until she heard the door close and then she sighed and stood up. This was starting out spectacularly. .
.
.
So - there’s more. And an outline. This could be the year I finish it~ Thank you~

Blue Beetle: Unmasking the Cinematic Odyssey
Hey there, folks. Welcome to Venture Onward, your one-stop hub for pop culture and comics. Today, we're about to embark on a deep dive into the exhilarating world of Blue Beetle and trust me, this is a rollercoaster you absolutely won't want to miss.
Now, let's keep it accurate for a moment. Blue Beetle didn't exactly set the box office on fire, and it deserves far more recognition than it ultimately received. But, hey, let's not linger on past disappointments; there's a treasure trove of insights waiting to be uncovered here, so let's dive right in.
I was over the moon when they first dropped the bombshell about this movie. Finally, a Latino superhero got the spotlight, and Jaime Reyes was the perfect pick. It felt like a groundbreaking moment in cinematic history, a chance for genuine representation to shine.
But then, the fateful day of its release came, and it didn't quite soar to the heights of success I had envisioned. Instead, it felt more like a turbulent nosedive, to be brutally honest, and it even dipped below The Flash's lukewarm reception from earlier in the year. It was undeniably disappointing, especially considering the immense potential that Blue Beetle held. But let's not get bogged down; there's a fascinating story to dissect here.
Xolo Maridueña's Phenomenal Portrayal
Let's kick things off with a detailed look at Xolo Maridueña. You might remember him from Cobra Kai, and let me tell you, he absolutely shines as Jaime Reyes. Seriously, his portrayal is a spot-on fit for this role, capturing the essence of the character with remarkable precision. From the moment he steps into the suit, you believe in Jaime Reyes as the Blue Beetle. His charisma, vulnerability, and the sheer authenticity he brings to the character make him an ideal choice.
But here's the burning question that keeps fans buzzing: Will we witness more of his exceptional talents in the expansive DC universe? Our collective fingers are tightly crossed for that, and the anticipation is palpable. It's not an exaggeration to say that Maridueña's performance breathed life into the character of Jaime Reyes and left us yearning for more of his adventures.
The Stellar Supporting Cast
Now, shifting the spotlight to the supporting cast, where George Lopez takes the lead as Rudy Reyes. In superhero films, secondary characters often feel shoehorned in, but not in Blue Beetle. They seamlessly meld into the narrative, adding depth and authenticity to the story. George Lopez's portrayal of Rudy Reyes? It's nothing short of a masterpiece, and his contribution elevates the film to another level.
Lopez's Rudy Reyes provides a vital emotional anchor to the story. His relationship with Jaime Reyes is a heartwarming and relatable portrayal of father-son dynamics. It's not just about the superhero and his adventures; it's about family, responsibility, and the bonds that tie us together. Lopez's performance adds a layer of emotional depth to the film that goes beyond the typical superhero flick.
Authentic Representation Done Right
Representation was a central focal point here, and I must say, Blue Beetle hit the bullseye. Jaime's story and the dynamics within his family resonated deeply with countless viewers. In today's world, this authentic representation is not just essential; it's a cultural necessity. And this movie delivered impeccably on that front, sparking conversations and connections.
The portrayal of a Latino superhero isn't just about the costume and the powers; it's about capturing the essence of the culture and the experiences that come with it. Blue Beetle manages to do this with grace and respect, making it a landmark moment in the history of superhero cinema. It's not just a movie for Latino audiences; it's a movie that celebrates the diversity and richness of our world.
The Enigmatic Villain: Carapax
Let's pay attention to Carapax, the film's enigmatic villain. He's far from your run-of-the-mill antagonist. Carapax is captivating, particularly during the heart-pounding action sequences that leave you breathless. His motivations and background add layers to the character, making him more than just a foil for our hero. There's complexity here, adding depth to the conflict at the story's heart.
And speaking of action, Blue Beetle's battles could quickly go toe-to-toe with the best offerings in the DC cinematic universe. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the screen; the choreography and execution were awe-inspiring.
Rivaling the Titans: Blue Beetle's Action Sequences
DC fans, it's high time to sit up and take notice. You're genuinely missing out on a cinematic experience that can effortlessly hold its own against The Dark Knight and Man of Steel. These action scenes are not just heart-pounding; they're intricately choreographed to a level of finesse that keeps you teetering on the edge of your seat, fully immersed in the breathtaking spectacle.
Blue Beetle's battles are a visual treat, a symphony of special effects and choreography that elevate the superhero genre to new heights. The fluidity of the action, combined with Maridueña's convincing performance, creates moments of true superhero magic. It's not just about the punches and explosions; it's about the emotional weight of each battle, the choices Jaime makes, and the growth he undergoes as a hero.
A Hero's Journey Worth Witnessing
Now, let's delve deeper into the narrative itself. It's a breath of fresh air in the superhero genre. Jaime's journey from an ordinary young man to a hero is a recipe for success. The storytelling keeps you riveted from start to finish, invested in every twist and turn of his transformation.
The heart of Blue Beetle lies in its exploration of what it means to be a hero. It's not just about the flashy costume and the superpowers; it's about the choices we make, the challenges we face, and the responsibility that comes with great power. Jaime Reyes' character arc is relatable and inspiring, a reminder that heroes can come from the most unexpected places.
The Box Office Conundrum
But, here's the curveball – that box office performance. It's genuinely disheartening to witness such potential go underappreciated. The future of the franchise the potential for sequels, it's all precariously hanging in the balance. The Mosley Review: Blue Beetle
Tumblr media
I believe we're all familiar with the term "suspension of disbelief" correct? I mean, you can say that about the majority of films in the superhero genre, but man does this film truly take that term to a level that I haven't seen in a while. For the longest time we have been treated to more grounded superhero films that had fantastical elements, but felt tangible and above all, possible. When dealing with alien tech in these films, yeah its supposed to be over the top, but somewhere along the way the tone needs to center itself for us to stay engaged throughout the film while being pelted by nonstop CGI madness. As a massive DC fan, the character of Blue Beetle has always been flashy and they nailed that aspect with the beautiful color scheme and visuals. This film truly leaned into the neo 80's sci fi style complete with plenty of neon blue and purple. The core of the film is about the power of family, but it lacks balance in trying to represent the Latino culture while trying to deliver a decent origin story that isn't filled to the brim with boring stereotypical character archetypes. You can throw as much kinetic energy on screen with cool visuals, but it means nothing if the story has nothing to say.
Tumblr media
Xolo Maridueña was charming and fun to watch as Jamie Reyes. I loved that he was always connected to his family and how he was a brilliant kid. I engaged with his growth as the film progressed, but I wish he had toned down the characters reactions to the Scarab. He spends most of the film screaming and freaking out and I wish there was more moments of him actually stopping and trying to figure out the new tech and his abilities. By the time he finally becomes a sort of hero, I liked his dedication, but he could've been directed better in how he got there. Belissa Escobedo was good as his annoying and angsty sister Milagro Reyes. There were moments where I wish she would pull back the constant negative and snarky comments as they completely stop the momentum of a scene. Damián Alcázar was awesome and heartfelt as Jamie's father Alberto Reyes. He was the core of the family and I enjoyed his scenes the most as he imparted the wisdom and calm the story needed. Elpidia Carrillo was good as Jamie's mother Rocio Reyes and the strength she portrays later in the film was astounding. Adriana Barraza was amazing and stole the film as Jamie's grandmother, Nana. I loved that there was more to her than the strong and lovable character in the background. George Lopez was fun and sometimes hilarious as Jamie's uncle, Rudy Reyes. He brings back that infectious energy that we all love him for and his expert comedic timing is on display. Even though he was paranoid most of the time, he was right and a brilliant engineer. Bruna Marquezine was really good as Jenny Kord and I liked that she had a strong moral compass in the film. Her chemistry with Jamie was forced at times, but levels out once everything slows down. Raoul Max Trujillo was good as the stoic fighter and bodyguard Ignacio Carapax. He pretty much was the person for Jamie to fight in the film, but there was more to his story and it made him more than a cardboard cut out villain. Susan Sarandon was decent as Jenny's aunt, Victoria Kord. She was your typical crooked and manipulative business woman that had the cliche rule the world with a new weapon program idea. Honestly, you were just waiting for her to be dealt with in some form and you can tell Susan was just there to have fun.
Tumblr media
The score by Bobby Kalic was fun and filled with the classic 80's techno infused sound. It really hits hard when we get into the history of the original Blue Beetle and when we get to see his lair. The visual design of the film was vibrant as I mentioned before with the neon accents. I really liked that the suit was practical and the action was fun to watch when the camera was pulled back and still. The film was a decent introduction of the character and the emotional family story was the core of the film, but the film truly does lack focus. There are so many ideas thrown around and the plot of the film was so bland that after while it felt like a chore to get to the end. Although we're dealing with alien tech, I wish this film was way more grounded, slowed down and less crowded. In the grand scheme of superhero films, this was a more middle of the road adventure. Its a good watch, but nothing that elevates the genre in meaningful or extremely impactful way. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in comments below. Thanks for reading!

Let's be honest I just really want to always have a well socialized and bombproof Xolo which... Is not what they're known or bred for. Confidence in novel environments is not the typical for them.
I just want a Xolo who believes in its own immortality in the face of the unknown as your average JRT is this too much to ask for

How do you feel about Peyton, Mary, and Jacob? I know that you don’t like Xolo for good reason…. So I wanna know about the rest of the young cast.
I love Peyton and I think she’s an incredibly talented actress. I’ve never met her but she seems very sweet and has a nice sense of humor. Plus, she has a really good cosmetic line that has become my new favorite lol 😆
As for Mary, I’ve actually met her and she’s definitely my favorite actress.
Mary’s like a literal ray of sunshine in person and I really got into watching a lot of shows/movies she was in after meeting her just because she was such a wonderful person that I wanted to delve into her career.
I’ve never met Jacob in real life, but I find him to be really annoying and I had to delete him on Instagram just because I couldn’t stand listening to his stories (he just has that “I’m so funny” persona that should make him interesting, but it rubs me the wrong way and comes to close to typical “boys will be boys” behavior that it grates on my nerves).
I actually don’t like Xolo for that same reason. Their personalities and attempts to be funny just rub me the wrong way.
I also don’t like him as a actor, (so that doesn’t give me reason to want to follow him anyway.) Whether it’s Cobra Kai or his Disney shows, I just can’t stand watching him on tv.

Werewolves and an interesting thought that came into my head
You know I always have to begin by saying that these are just thoughts- they're not thoughts aimed to hurt anyone! I'm not here to dismantle anyone's beliefs, I'm just here to spew out my little inner ramblings.
So, werewolves... ah yes, those guys.
While I'm scribbling away on my google doc about my grand plans for this stupid story I'm working on, a thought comes into my head: "why are male werewolves so predominant in mythology?"
So, I do a bit of digging...
You see, the word 'werewolf', as we probably all know, comes from Old English, but what I think is sometimes ignored is the fact that 'were' stems from 'wir' which means 'man'. As modern English speakers, we're used to 'man' and 'human' being used interchangeably, removed from gender, but 'wir' doesn't mean 'man' like that. It means 'male human'. 'Werewolf' is technically 'male-human-wolf'. **
Werewolves are male in nature, and this is rare. It's rare because when monsters are gendered, they're typically female. Think gorgons, sirens, harpies, succubi, banshees, slit-mouthed women, manananggal and so on. Yes, there are of course male monsters, but what's special about female monsters is that their femininity is particularly tied to their monstrosity- especially when we're looking at the backdrop of European lore which the werewolf makes its home in (think witches and their relationship with femininity and womanhood). Werewolves are unique in that their masculinity can be tied to their monstrosity.
What can you do with this information? Well, a lot. I think what's interesting is that werewolves, particularly in western Europe, were feared, hated and looked upon with the same amount of scorn one would look upon with a witch. Heck! There were even trials held for werewolves during the famous witch-hunts! That's interesting because a werewolf is still tragic, much unlike the witch, who was seen as getting what she deserved. And yet, the werewolf was still hated.
There's a struggle there. Mythology is really not known for its consistency and no better example of that is the treatment of the werewolf. Looking through the lens of a patriarchal storyteller, the werewolf is something which is feared and sympathised with. Because you can't deny its savage nature but you want to. You want to forget the violence, the anger, the hatred this beast is capable of, because it frightens you. Because you too can be that beast. You can "give in".
Werewolves have always had a relationship with masculinty. The constant discussion of violence and manhood can be linked to this monster. And, personally, I think there's a lot of room here for creative potential. We've seen how the werewolf can be used to illustrate body horror and its relationship with female adolescence (a.k.a Ginger Snaps, an amazing film) but I really don't see much about werewolves and what they can be done with men, and men's own relationships with themselves, be it their current or adolescent manhoods. There's been a lot of male werewolf protagonists but the werewolf has been used in other ways symbolically, but not as a symbol of something within the realms of masculinity. I think the subject should be approached tentatively and with care, as with most subjects regarding gender, but yeah, I really want to see this aspect of lycanthropy explored.
There's room for real horror here, real tragedy and also discomfort. Maybe werewolves are that repressed, unanimous truth we've been refusing acknowledge out of fear (I'm looking at you, Lord of the Flies) or maybe werewolves are a cry for help?
Anyways, that's all for today, folks!
** By this logic, female werewolves technically should be called 'wifwolves', stemming from the Old English word 'wif' which, you guessed it, means 'woman' and is also where we get the word 'woman' from, along with 'wife' and 'midwifery' :).
P.S. No idea why, but this thought like resurrected itself from the back of my mind whilst I'm watching that "Xolo Marideuña trying snacks" video by the channel that does Hot Ones. Absolutely irrelevant but a fun fact nonetheless.

NAME. Vidal Larentia AGE & BIRTH DATE. 24 & December 7th, 1999 GENDER & PRONOUNS. Male & He/Him. SPECIES. Witch COVEN. Alstroemeria OCCUPATION. Front Counter at Çiçek FACE CLAIM. Xolo Maridueña
biography
( tw: death, sickness ) The siblings, Faustulus and Acca were famed for departing through the Otherworld via the Temple of the Sun. Brilliant innovators, unbeknownst to Faustulus, a woman that he’d left behind was with child at the time. Sovereigns of the Alstroemeria Coven, Faustulus and Acca went on to lay the foundation for generations of innovators to follow. They worked with light in its many forms, and through their practices created the first of the daylight rings.
Generations later amidst the lilies of the Incas that bloomed over an Ecuadorian hillside, a once proud coven had dwindled to only two. Vidal had never known his father, he’d died before the witch was born but he’d come from a long and unbroken line of Larentian witches. From their home the ruined temple of his family’s ancestors held a panoramic view of the hillside, the small town of Ingapirca was largely buried from public purview but every year tourists would make the trek out to see the ruins of the Temple in person. The elliptical shape made its design unique, the construction was typical of the inspired genius of the Incas, and the stories associated with the site transcended generations. To Vidal, it was home.
For most of Vidal’s childhood his mother was never sick, he remembered the days when her smile was bright and warm. That was what always felt like home, it was just the two of them now which was far from enough to call a coven but they were still family. The others had moved on, passed on, or had just faded away. Still, in his bones he was an Alstroemeria witch, regardless if the true coven existed on the other side of the world. His mother had raised him to be proud of his roots and she helped guide Vidal’s hands through the formative years of magic.
From a young age though Vidal’s mind seemed to work differently from others, to start he was always looking for ways to make life easier. One person’s trash would be his treasure, with some adjustments technology could be adapted to magic and vice versa; while the coven had vanished their work and their practices had not. A legacy of inventors, though it was Vidal that was inspired aptly by the modern era; he’d take apart his mother’s toaster and adapt it to keep the TV from losing signal, or he’d pull apart the pipes under the sink to use them for parts to his steam powered bicycle.
Young ingenuity and optimism defined his formative years and while many of his neighbours thought he was precarious at best, or troublesome at worst, it wasn’t until a tourist passed through the town one summer that everything changed. Vidal’s mother got sick very soon after, though the cause of the disease was always uncertain. She developed a cough, she pitched a fever, and over the months and then years that followed it would come and go. Vidal grew up never really knowing what was wrong with her but with every passing year she seemed to get weaker and weaker. Eventually they called for a healer from a coven of familiar witches some distance away when modern medicine and what few restorative practices Vidal knew weren’t helping. A portion of his mother’s soul had been taken and with every passing moment her body grew weaker and weaker, the victim of a cubi, eventually she succumbed to the injury and Vidal was powerless to do anything about it.
Within the old, empty home Vidal remained for a time. The grimoires and histories that hadn’t been stolen, traded, or destroyed over the years were among his few comforts. Friends came and went, but Vidal largely sequestered himself away as he continued to practise his craft; in time those that he was closest to were the things that he managed to put together himself. Small automatons with predetermined purposes, something crablike made out of scissors to cut his hair, but more often than not things were a bit off, at least with the first few variations.
One year passed, then another, and by the time news of the famed Alstroemeria coven’s disappearance found him Vidal was already in his early twenties. He’d thought about it of course, following in the footsteps of his ancestors, Faustulus and Acca Alstroemeria-Larentia, but the thought of leaving home behind was a daunting one. It was all he’d ever known, his friends were there, and if he left then the last remnants of the Larentian name would be gone from the town forever. The journey would be dangerous, through a hidden gate in the Temple of the Sun it was possible for him to travel to Rome through the Otherworld… But that was something he’d never done before. It was something that no one he’d ever met had done before, but the Otherworld had been used by his ancestors and had been used by witches around the world for ages.
Months of toiling saw him imbue an old flashlight, a broken microwave, some refrigerator coils, and a token from his mother with a few choice spells. One for location, another for energy, and a final addition to imbue the metals with some choice clairvoyance. A few trials, some modifications, and then a few more experiments saw Vidal packed and loaded. Through the Otherworld his Bug led him to Rome, and to the doorstep of the Alstroemeria Coven he brought three new mechanical designs of his own creation: a crab that could cut hair, two mice that could alter clothes, and a monkey that could cook (poorly).
