Something New....

So….I watched one episode of Unsolved Mysteries and a whole thing happened.

First of all, I have always been a huge fan of both crime and medical procedurals. If you don’t know what I mean by procedural, here is the Wikipedia definition: In television, "procedural" specifically refers to a genre of programs in which a problem is introduced, investigated, and solved all within the same episode. These shows tend to be hour-long dramas and are often (though not always) police or crime related.

After both @harleybeaumont and @dcbbw encouraged me to do something with the fact that the unsolved mystery sent my head spinning in a million different directions, an idea was born. An idea for a procedural-type series, with each multi-chapter episode a stand-alone mystery, with overarching storylines for the main characters woven throughout every episode.

A series that has very little to do with canon. No one is royalty and it’s set in the good old U.S.A. The name of my fictional city is a nod to canon though: Cordonia City.

What lies in the heart of Cordonia City?

Situated on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, Cordonia City is the largest metropolitan area in the country. Renowned for its culture, it’s an epicenter for artists of all types, world-class culinary establishments, and financial institutions. But there’s a dark underbelly to the city, one that never sleeps.

Law’s End, the largest of the boroughs, is rife with turmoil. It’s a place where wealth and privilege live side by side with poverty and squalor, where passion intertwines with betrayal. A place where lies and deceit are commonplace, politics and corruption rule, and crime and violence flow through the city streets.

These are the stories of the people that fight against the tide of injustice, and the woman who chronicles those crusades.

Liam Rys is a strait-laced cop who won’t step outside the lines of the law for any reason, even if that means the bad guy walks. Rules are rules and they’re there for a reason.

Drake Walker is a jaded PI who believes the ends justify the means. He treats lines and rules as suggestions at best and things that stand in his way at worst.

Maxwell Beaumont is a multitalented photojournalist with mad cyber skills. He doesn’t necessarily care about the lines, the rules, or the ends, he’s just along for the ride.

Riley Brooks is an investigative journalist assigned to the crime desk and an up-and-coming true crime novelist who is looking for her next big story. She’ll go to great lengths to get what she wants, and she never reveals her sources.

With Olivia Nevrakis as the DA, Hana Lee as the medical examiner, and Madeleine Amaranth as mayor, anything could happen.

[“A skeptic who recoiled from the jingoism of the Cold War, Hughes had little patience for the notion that America was an exceptional nation immune to the moral lapses that befell other countries. After his essay on dirty work was published, the sociologist Arnold Rose wrote to Social Problems to complain that Hughes had understated the uniquely murderous nature of Nazi racial ideology. In response, Hughes emphasized, again, that he hadn’t written it with the German experience foremost in mind. “[My essay] was addressed to North Americans … to put us—and especially the people of the U.S.A.—on guard against our own inner enemies,” he affirmed. “We are so accustomed to racial violence and to violence of other kinds that we think little of it. That was the theme of my lecture in 1948. I repeat it more emphatically in 1963, when many of us Americans still practice private lynching, police torture, what amounts to inquisition and criminal trial by legislative bodies; and when the rest of us do not bother, dare, or have not found a way to stop it.”

As the exchange suggests, Hughes was interested in raising questions about a dynamic that he was convinced existed in every society, not least his own. There was, to be sure, no moral equivalence between the injustices of postwar America and the atrocities of the Nazi era, which Hughes described as “the most colossal and dramatic piece of social dirty work the world has ever known.” But less extreme forms of dirty work that took place in less autocratic countries still required the tacit consent of “good people.” In fact, one could argue, this consent mattered far more in a democracy, where dissent was tolerated and public officials could be voted out of office, than in a dictatorship like Nazi Germany. Like their peers in other democratic countries, Americans had the freedom to question, and potentially stop, unethical activity that was carried out in their name.

“The question concerns what is done, who does it, and the nature of the mandate given by the rest of us to those who do it,” wrote Hughes. “Perhaps we give them an unconscious mandate to go beyond anything we ourselves would care to do or even to acknowledge.”]

Like they travel all over the U.S and other countries picking up where Police and others have left off with a group, they're uncovered vehicles from lakes/cliff sides/marshlands/swamps, they even solve murdered missing people cases, almost like Sherlock Holmes except they don't work in police, but sometimes they get called in by detectives

They're not afraid even if the Mafia tries to threaten them from time to time they're just trying to give Closure to the missing people's families

He doesn't often come with you on cases mainly because he doesn't want to ruin anything

He'll happily stand between you and the Mafia if you need him too

Demoman

He's really fascinated

He might ask to come with you on a case and just stand to the side to observe you working

He also does ask pretty helpful questions while he's with you

He's also for some reason not phased when the mafia shows up

Pyro

They think your job is super cool and super sweet toward the families who've lost that person

They want to help but they don't want to leave their mercenary job either

They're super concerned when they hear the mafia showed up though

Heavy

He thinks your job is dangerous but he knows it makes you happy so he doesn't say anything

He's just as scary as the mafia (they've tried to recruit him once) so he'll stand between you and them if need be

Seeing how happy the families are as well makes him bite back on voicing his worries

Medic

He murders a lot of people whoops sorry about that

He might end up being the cause for a few missing people

He's very good at autopsies though if you find a body and need it cut open

Sniper

He might awkwardly point out that he was hired to snipe one of the people you're searching for

Please don't sell him out he needs this job

He's concerned when the mafia shows up and even more when you say "not again"

Spy

One time you showed him a picture of the missing person and he said "hey I made that guy go missing for a reason mkay?"

So yeah Spy knows where some of them are and he's skeptical to tell you

He's annoyed if the mafia shows up especially if they try to take responsibility for his kill he'll be like "excuse you? I killed that man not you peasants. Uncultured"

just scanning the headlines that different news organizations give this story is very telling. remember all media has some bias

cops are not your friends and they don't actually protect you. or help you. or let you do it yourself. cops stopped (ie, pinned down, threatened to taser) multiple parents from attempting to rescue their children, then did nothing

nothing. cops literally stand there using hand sanitizer in the school hallways while children died.

guns are the number one cause of death for children and teens in the u.s.a.

the nra had its convention in texas days after this shooting and complained that the nra members were the "real victims"

Christmas With the Super-Heroes (Limited Collectors' Edition #34)

I decided to read all of this, not just the Santa story. It contains:

A reprint of Silent Night, Deadly Night (already covered, though in the fun of rereading it, this was definitely recoloured - the most obvious point is Betsy's dress changes from red in Batman #239 to green in Limited Collectors' Edition #34)

Billy Batson's Christmas (two fake Santas) - this is some classic old Shazam nonsense where Billy is troubleshooting things and a model train starts a fire!

Angel and the Ape: The $500,000 Doll Caper - our Santa story. Another story about repairing old broken toys for kids for Christmas. Apparently this was a major thing?

The toys are delivered to...Santa's Workshop. Santa reusing and recycling for Christmas, hey?

Anyway the actual plot is about a man who smuggled in a diamond sewn inside a doll. Only the doll gets lost in a car accident, Angel picks it up, and "Mr Stooge" (the guy who arranged for the diamond to be smuggled) orders his thugs to find every doll in the city to locate the diamond. This goes poorly.

Here are some *sigh* police detectives acting as bait to try and catch the gang.

We also have a 'evil making' gas that gets reversed and Mr Stooge gives Santa 2 million dollars to buy toys for the children.

A Swinging Christmas Carol - this is a reprint of Teen Titans #13 (1966)

This, of course, a retelling of A Christmas Carol, extremely subtly foregrounded by Bob Haney (oh Bob).

Bob Ratchet needs his job with Ebenezer Scrounge to get an automatic wheelchair for Tiny Tom. Yes, really. (Oh Bob). Then Jacob Farley appears. Farley has escaped from jail and used to work with Scrounge.

The Titans eventually realise everyone in this story maps to A Christmas Carol, just in case you, the reader, happen to be unfamiliar with the story, and explain this (Oh Bob).

Wally pretends to be the Ghost of Christmas Past at Scrounge, Garth the Ghost of Christmas Present and Donna is the Ghost of Christmas Future (in a red and white Santa outfit, it must be said).

But oh no! Donna gets shot!

After a fight scene, Scrounge repents his ways and decides to turn over a new leaf, including buying a fancy new wheelchair for Tiny Tom (Oh Bob).

Christmastown, U.S.A. (Part of Action Comics #117)

There's a flood in Christmastown, and the Osborne family, who always supply Santa, have a missing grandson Danny! So Lois and Clark are sent to report on the flood, and Clark as Superman builds a 'Christmas Ark' to float down the flooded river and distribute 'cheer and presents' to all the flooded communities (Superman makes the presents at superspeed out of wood, of course), and Lois stumbles across our missing grandson, who has amnesia after being hit by a floating log. Danny remembers who he is on seeing the ark and his grandfather playing Santa.

Also Superman makes it snow over Christmastown for a White Christmas, which as you know is exactly what a flooded-in community needs.

General Spy headcanons.

- he might seem like a gentleman, but he's a total douchebag; his insults are like putting salt into an open scar, they're very vulgar and usually meant to attack the person's very personal life,

- doesn't come from a rich family. Had to take several jobs after he turned 18. All that hard work is what really got him to the point he could afford anything he wanted,

- he loves paintings, has lots of classic ones in his room. He managed to steal at least one of these from an art gallery, to which he used to go quite often,

- when he was younger, he was a hopeless romantic. He hoped to have a family with a woman of his dreams...then he really grew up, and realized he won't be ever able to sit in one place for a while with his profession,

- about the profession, he wasn't always a Spy. How did he become one then? An Australian sold him an old, kinda broken copy of the Spytron 0015. It cost barely cents, and he decided to buy it out of pure curiosity. Once he came home and tried it out, he was in absolute awe,

- he firstly used it to sneak onto private meetings of his hometown government,

- he would knock out the mayor's right hands, and disguise as them. He did it multiple times, until he got caught. He wasn't caught by police, but by an organization working with Spies. Rest is history,

- after some years of work, he became known in the French business. Known enough to start a career in U.S.A,

- even though the language was hard to learn, he eventually got the hang of it,

- he stopped trying to find love. Instead, he would go on different rampages after work,

- the bars in Boston were his favorite place,

- and there she met her, his petite chou fleur...one of the many women and men he called that name when seducing them,

- and it happened...leaving out the details, he got a phone call the next month,

- " What do you mean with me? You could have it with any men! Why me? ",

- he sounded rather disappointed to the possible news of being a father, however, he began to look on the bright side,

- maybe it was time to put the dream of a real family into reality?after all those years,

- he even visited her again several times...and quickly got rid of his dreams entirely. He didn't want to raise seven other boys which weren't his. He coldly left her some money, and moved out to another state,

- he became a general agent, who was known in the business,

- when around 23 years later the Mann Co. was looking for new mercenaries, he was contacted as one of the first ones,

- moving to New Mexico wasn't difficult for him, considering how many places he lived in before,

- however, it turns out he was a bit late,

- he was suppose to be assigned to Team Vanguard, but someone has been faster than him,

- he got sent down very down the line, and got assigned into Team Fortress,

- there, when he first met all the mercenaries we all know...he was disgusted to say the least,

- a loud kid, a mad scientist, big guy with gun, drunken cyclop, old bald robotnik, mumbling abomination, a screaming patriotic fanatic and a bushman that uses jars with his own liquid to fight aren't his dream colleagues,

- he was forced to stay by their side to get paid,

- he regretted even applying here,

- on one of the first days, the mercenaries had been sitting in the common room, talking about their families and countries, Spy was sitting back and only observing, not talking,

- Heavy put on a photo of him with his sisters, Sniper took out a photo of him with his parents, Engineer proudly showed off a picture of him with his father, and Scout decided to join in. He put a picture of him, his mother and one older brother on the table,

- and Spy immediately recognized that woman,

- he had never forgot her, not once,

- at first he swallowed in, and decided to join the conversation,

- " Is that your mother ? "

" Yeah, it is! She's the sweetest! "

" Remind me...how old are you again? "

" Twenty three. Why you askin'? ",

- and it hit Spy like a train. His son was there, talking to him,

- that was an awful feeling,

- at some point later on however, he asked Medic to run a DNA test for him. He wanted to be sure,
