Sonic also very much HAD gradual design changes between 1991-7...it's just that the general public didn't give a shit. We go from this tubbiness

To long legs and hair mcbrow here. Hoshino did Sonic CD and R 2D art, and the diff between that and here is still indicating an overall evolution. Only Amy and Eggman drastically changed, which for the former I'm glad. Better than being a literal girl Sonic clone. The rest are just continuing a trend then adding iris color

But really I feel Sonic Team did the redesigns to welcome a new era, given how Japan unironically forgot about Sonic. It's jarring- if you ignore 6-7 years of the franchise, but also distinctively full of much needed energy given the crap 1995-7 period.

Similarly I feel we're missing cultural context; both the US and Japan had a problem with associating design with specific tone, so you ended up with typecasted designs. Sonic despite having attitude and games like 3K WAS associated to being a cutesy generic mascot inferior to Hello Kitty in Japan, which is not a good thing. Almost all noncanon manga further just divorced itself from actual game tone to be a parody or cutesy manga, which both Naka and Oshima didn't like, same for early Sega Harmony Calendar art.

The US market had a forced redesign that lasted till 1994 that while ass, unfortunately just lended to the idea of not accepting a design as is, regardless of tone. So Sonic Team gave in to that for Adventure, which a competition was held in 1997 to see how it was recieved. Uekawa won ironically cuz he had the safest design, but took elements of Okano's art later to add flair and zaniness as it'd defeat the point otherwise

I feel Capcom had a similar problem with Megaman: they didn't feel comfortable with solely using the same design for bigger stories, so they opted for the more adult X spinoffs, and then similarly did the same for Legends and Battle Network (ironically I feel this backfired). Even Ruby Spears attempted to be faithful for their show pilot, but test audiences didn't like it, so we got a mediocre jocked up muscle Mega Man. While in Japan the anime OVAs were very cutesy and basic, despite games being more action oriented

It's hard to say if this issue disappeared now, and I feel it's revisionism to say "oh, if the redesigns didn't happen, no one would be mad" cuz the truth is...Sonic would die if he didn't change harder

I feel both ignoring every middle design and just lumping Sonic as "Classic" "Modern" is a very stupid thing as both are fucking subjective and tempermental terms. Adventure isn't "modern", and anything with sentimental value and nostalgia is "classic". Heroes is fucking over 20 years old, and can be considered one to some, as unpopular of an opinion that is. Sonic Team didn't have eras awkwardly like that in the 10th Anniversary book, and even said "Sonic will continue changing", but after 10 more years of the fandom, original creatives outside Iizuka leaving, and game reviewers destroying nuance and history, they forcibly had to split him like so for Generations. I see the same fan mentality outside Sonic for Golden Age era cartoons, it's maddening. Just look at Looney Tunes fans on how they treat Daffy, it's the same shit

Sorry for ranting, but I hate when history and evolution are ignored just to make strawmanned points when it boils down to "wishful revisionism under MY misnostalgia/control". I saw someone make an SA1 mod to make stages "More classic" with checker spam when not only is that term bullshit, Sega and Okano literally showed us concept art of Adventure stages before the char designs tweaks, and it's the exact same texture and bg prop set as final. That is maddening

I'm tired of it

At the risk of being blunt, I'm aware of all that. I assure you that I could never forget American the Assface and Ivo No-Eyes no matter how much I'd prefer to.

As for Mario, his earliest designs had the excuse of it not being fully set in stone yet, and with the N64 era onward, they generally only involved slight proportion changes or subtle details in the clothing and what have you... much like Sonic in the years between 91 and 97, American Assface and other questionable SoA decisions notwithstanding. The point is, Mario wasn't redesigned for the explicit purpose of seeming like a more mature bing bing wahoo man. :P Neither was Kirby, who I used for reference due to his reputation of fighting eldritch abominations and occasional dark subtext despite resembling a pink blob with stubs for arms.

Finally, I can't speak for how others choose to use the terms, but I use Classic and Modern for simple convenience. I agree that there should never have been an official line in the sand between the two, at least outside of Generations' context, but this is what the franchise has taught us to do at this point. That's the ugly truth, I'm afraid. As is the ugly truth that the vocal, dramatic shift to the Adventure designs and style - regardless of intent, regardless of justification, regardless of the gradual alterations and differences between artists in the years beforehand, regardless of every angle of relevant context - still brought on one of the single most notorious divides in a fandom full of them, up there with the debut of SatAM. We can debate all day as to whether it was fair or not, but the divide happened all the same.

I'm not a Classic-only purist. SA1 is one of my favourite games in the series, and I love various other Modern titles. And to stress once more, I like the Modern character designs and have no personal beef with them whatsoever. But I can't ignore these things in an age where Adventure era rose-tinted goggles are at an all time high, and while it's true that not everything is straightforward, that goes both ways in cases like this.

My first impression

Admittedly I was pretty indifferent to Betty at first, when she was just Betty. Not to say she was a bad character or anything, she just seemed burdened with being the Hulk's love interest and someone to be kidnapped or exploited by the villain of the week.

My impression now

Favorite thing about that character

I love how both the She-Hulks explore anger, rage and how to manage what your feeling. I love how as Red She-Hulk, Betty has a whole other approach to Jen. She likes being Red She-Hulk and wears it like armour. She likes being angry, getting to channel that rage on her terms. She can be impulsive, do things on a whim, she can be true to herself in ways she never was as a human. She's unapologetic about what she is and that carries over into her more monstrous form as Harpy. Also both her Red She-Hulk and Harpy designs are gorgeous, stunning, all the heart eyesss.

Least favorite thing

Just how little content we have with her?

Also every time they try to de-power and reset her.

Favorite line/scene

So much of Immortal Hulk is a monster lover's delight, but I especially enjoy the dialogue between Betty and Bruce/Hulk/Joe in the hotel. So much of that series is Betty finding her boundaries and sticking up for herself. Also canonical monster fucking.

Favorite interaction that character has with another

I'm very easily amused and this always makes me smile.

A character that I wish that character would interact with more

I'd genuinely like to see her beat the ever-loving fuck out of The Leader a few times? She's earned it.

She's a bit of a solo act, but I like seeing her in a team with Dr Strange. It'd be fun to see her have buddy cop dynamic with someone... an Iron Fist to her Luke Cage, as it were.

What's Clint Barton up to these days? Take that for a ride, everyone else has.

Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character

Thats kinda hard to say, I feel like we seldom get to see female-coded characters that get to enjoy being angry whilst having control over their anger, so it's kinda slim pickings.

A headcanon about that character

I think for all her wild, reckless behaviour, Hulk Betty probably finds parties every bit as obnoxious as she did as a human. She's all about having fun, that's just not fun to her. Big red grump isn't asking you to turn the music down, you're being told .

A song that reminds of that character

Mars Needs Women - Rob Zombie

Not particularly deep or meaningful, it just keeps thumping about angry red women.

An unpopular opinion about that character

I think she should be in more stories as she is. Especially ones where she's written well, preferably by someone who isn't a man.

Apparently 'comic fans' really hate that.

Favorite picture

It was how she made her entrance in her solo series and I was absolutely sold on her immediately. Betty Ross hefting a tank like its nothing.

Also the smorgasbord of body horror and creature design that is Immortal Hulk.

I like to read your thoughts on IM comics. What were your thoughts on invincible iron man #6, i am ironman #3 and avengers (2023) #1

Hi anon! I'll gladly give you my thoughts.

Invincible Iron Man #6:

This run stays good, and has been consistently good for 6 issues now, which gives me hope that it will stay that good for the rest of it. I liked seeing 80s Tony, and his run-in with Emma was a fun and believable retcon. It does make me think that Emma and Tony being an item at some point in the future is likely, but at least Duggan builds it up, unlike Cantwell someone else. I think that even if the plot itself gets worse (which I don't really think it will), I will still enjoy this run because of the characterization. Look at these gems:

There are so many characterization moments that just make sense, and it has been that way in every issue so far. I love it. I also love that all the call-backs to his past seem to serve a purpose, and to me it feels like Duggan really knows what he's talking about and not just making a surface-level reference. The blend of seriousness and humour that Duggan writes really works for me. I like that Tony has moments of self-reflection, I like how determined he is to stop Feilong. The mix of recklessness and calculation that Tony shows is peak Tony to me. He uses his brain, but his emotions run high. Yes!

Also there are always fun panels, like this one: insert meme caption [me when I write fanfiction at three a.m.]

I Am Iron Man #3:

A touching issue. The start felt a bit weird and stilted to me, and I suspected that Tony was reciting lines/playacting. I was relieved when it turned out to be the case. The best part about this issue is the various Maria and Tony flashbacks. It made me a little emotional, to imagine that Tony's (only) best friend was his mother. They loved each other so much..... I am sad. This was my favourite panel:

Now, this might be a little bit of an unpopular opinion but I can't fully enjoy the I Am Iron Man series because I can't really get into the writing style and art style. But I almost always like the Tony characterization, the humour is fun, and I love the Tony-Rhodey friendship. Also, Ayodele and Akande LOVE Tony and that really shows through and it's so refreshing to read. As fellow Iron Man fans, I love that they're doing an Iron Man series.

My nitpicky thoughts about this issue: 1. The tombstone with "Tony's best friend" is touching but makes zero sense and I found it a little too on the nose. 2. Tony's armour and his facial hair do not match in the last panels. He had a goatee at the time.

I do think that I haven't really been able to get into the series because the execution of the story didn't really work for me. The themes are great, though. Next issue will take place during Director of Shield Tony, and I think it will make or break my general opinion of the run. I have a very specific interpretation of what Tony's headspace is like during that time.

Avengers #1:

(under a cut because this post is getting long and the issue came out last week)

Great start of the run. I really loved the Tony and Carol interaction, and that it reminded us that Tony and Carol are good friends and important to each other. Carol mentioning that Tony is her sponsor is so good. I liked how everyone was portrayed, it's very promising. Carol and her talk about the Avenger's purpose and what they do was amazing. MacKay's insistence that the Avengers are not cops, but people who fight every day to save lives, to save the world, is very welcome.

I also really liked this:

I think that MacKay knows what he's doing, and the voices and characterization of every character felt good to me. I'm excited that Tony is the Executive Officer of the Avengers, the number two. I think that this position is one where Tony has the potential to excel.

The interactions between team members were fun, too. No artificial hostility, a good deal of trust and familiarity, even some joking! I hope that MacKay will continue on this line of "the avengers are more than just co-workers". It's nice to have them be friends, even though there are tensions (between Sam and T'Challa for now). The plot itself seems interesting, but it's too early for me to form an opinion.

Unpopular opinion: I think Caitlin should have become a reoccurring character instead of back for every episode during series 4 rather than immediately back to Star Labs no consequences for, you know, assisting with the attempted murder of Iris and death of HR or apparently working for a human trafficker during the break between series 3 and 4. At least give her a she was infiltrating to try and take down (with ex Rogue turned vigilante Hartley) Blacksmith's Network in an attempt to feel like she was working on earning her redemption and using her powers for good arc which then converges with the main plot while Barry's in Iron Heights rather than like a throw away oh yeah she worked for this woman who's keeping a man captive to use him to create drugs and make herself rich because she had some tech or whatever it was Caitlin wanted that Cisco probably could have just made in like half an hour

You are so correct, and this has always bothered me. Don’t get me wrong, I like Caitlin, but…the fact that she was brought back to Team Flash in s4 despite a) aiding in trying to kill Iris last season and b) working with Amunet between seasons is wild to me. She didn’t have to apologize to anyone or make amends or anything (and honestly, Iris was so unbelievably kind to Caitlin all season…she’s better than me fr ✋)

An arc of Caitlin trying to take Amunet down from the inside would’ve been so cool omg, and yeah it could’ve tied into Barry’s incarceration plotline! They had options!

KotLC as the Avengers bc why not

This is probably going to be an unpopular opinion but. Sophie as Nick Fury. “I get that the council has made a decision but considering that it is a stupid decision, I’ve decided to ignore it” yk.

Fitz as Cap, of course. The first in the team, the shining hero who’s not as perfect as people think.

Keefe as Iron Man—the ego and humor to hide the self deprecation, etc etc. Also the fact that Tony was a child prodigy AND a prankster :) (with daddy issues)

Biana as Black Widow. Often underestimated, but trained in stealth and easily one of the most lethal.

Dex as Bruce. Constantly working with chemicals, tech, lab work, all that jazz. He could definitely be Hawkeye, though.

Linh is Thor, Tam is Loki. One, because Tam as Loki would be the most unstoppable combo (and the finest let’s be fr), and also because it just makes sense. Imagine them doing Get Help, y’all. Linh is supporting Tam on her shoulder, “Help, please my brother is dying” just *launches* Tam at the Neverseen. Like. I need this.

I’m thinking Wylie as Hawkeye (or him and Maruca as Black Panther and Shuri).

Unpopular Opinion: Valorant x MCU crossover

I have been playing Valorant for 2 years now and I keep thinking (and hoping) that riot does a collab with Marvel and create some MCU skins for their guns.

Just think about it, an Iron Man Vandal and a Captain America Phantom! A Thor Judge and a Hulk Odin, beast of a gun for the beasts of the team and don't get me started on a Winter Soldier Operator! Umpf! It'll definitely fit Bucky's aesthetic. And a Black Widow knife or even a classic? What more can you ask for???!!!

Unpopular opinion time. I like Killer alot more then Kid and I am away's happy to write for him. I've not seen him alot as I've not personally watched or red past Dressrosa so I hope I do your boy justice.

Killer x GN Reader AU: Modern - Band SFW Suggested listening: Sham Pain - Five Finger Death Punch Word Count: 1842 AN: So appaently I made up for the fact there's not much Killer contact and wrote like 3/4 fucking pages.

“So, he’s in a band and I don’t really like the kind of music they play but he’s so fucking hot that I can put up with it for like two hours” Your friend sighed leaning on the table fixating on their current boyfriend obsessively. You sipped your drink and shrugged your shoulders “I guess I can come along” Their pleading voice at the start of the conversation had definitely given away their intentions of nagging you to come with them.

And so Friday night rolled up and you were stood in line to the local alternative music venue, lots of people wearing black and spikey clothing either side of the line to you. Your friend kept going on about how they were fucking the singer slash head guitarist, thankfully you had managed to tune them out a little by now.

The line moved at a snail’s pace, and you were a little impressed at the turn out, it was pretty good for just a local band, you’d not seen a line down the street at this venue for as long as you could remember. You kept your hands in your pockets, shuffling along the sidewalk until you got to the front, your friend showing the doorman your tickets.

So, the guy they were dating wasn’t into them enough to give them a VIP access though. Your friend had bad taste in men, that wasn’t anything new. Once inside you were thankful the club did well enough at sales it could afford aircon as the room already seemed packed and you’d not even been the last one in line.

Gothic fixtures, stone gargoyles either side of the mosh pit, big iron bars, it always did theatrics well. When had you last been here? You shook that line of thought away, it had been a while and you left it at that. Your friend had already flung themselves into the crowd teaming around the bar, bursting forth with beers in their hand, passing you one they gave you such a happy grin.

Even if this guy seemed like trash, they seemed happy enough for now, you weren’t going to be the voice of reason, not when this was clearly a rebound to have some fun for your friend. You sipped your beer listening to the music playing in the background as the sound tecs worked on things around the stage.

“All the band are kinda cute but he is just beautiful” More gushing from your friend and you nodded, they didn’t seem to care the conversation was all one sided. You were far too focused on how you recognised the bass guitar propt up on stage. You narrowed your eyes before the lights went down.

The venues announcer walked on the main stage, just one light focused on him as he welcomed the band. Your friend screamed and jumped up and down waving their arm aggressively, you gave an awkward smile as you moved just an inch to save your eardrums.

Taking their places in the shadows behind the man “Please give a big welcome to The Kid Pirates!” Everyone started to clap and cheer as he ran off stage, the lights casting their full beams on the band and your heart dropped, you should have asked what band your friends’ new boyfriend was in but you never guessed the small possibility of this.

“That’s him that’s him! The red haired one!” Your friend screamed grabbing your arm and shaking it. You suddenly decided one beer wasn’t enough to help you cope with this evening.

“Alright fuckers” Kid laughed with his arms raised. “This is the one your all here for, right? basic! But here you fucking go!” The red-haired man had just insulted the crowd but everyone was losing their minds, he hadn’t learned any manners since the last time you’d had to spend time with him.

But you didn’t focus on the loudmouth for long, your eyes automatically found your exe, muscles, long blond hair, that dumb mask he always wore for performances, the goatee however was new but the addition of facial hair wasn’t what surprised you the most. He was wearing the black and white polka dot shirt you bought him for his birthday years ago.

The music started up, loud and aggressive just like the front man, it had been so long since you’d heard his band and memories came flooding back from the time you’d sit on the tatty ripped sofa in his garage as the whole band practised at your house. The house wasn’t the best, but it was the home you’d shared together.

Seeing him after all this time you could feel the dull ache in your heart, your friend trying and failing to sing along but you did, you knew the words, you’d watched as Killer threw rolled up paper ball after ball into the trash can.

Feeling weak at the knees you watched the performance, how Killer threw his hair back, how the entire band worked as one beating heart. You knew how hard the band, especially Killer had worked to get this far and as mad as you’d been at him when you parted ways right now you were happy for him. He’d done what he set out to do.

When the show was over your friend grabbed you before you could protest, dragging you towards the backstage, the bouncers didn’t seem pleased until your friend aggressively showed them the messages from Kid and they believed them, letting you both back. Wow that hadn’t taken much convincing..

The door swung open with a thud almost hitting someone the other side of it, there sat on the sofa stretched out was your exe and Kid was balls deep in the fridge getting an armful of beers before he glared over his shoulder at the open door, his expression only softening a little.

“Ah you guys were great!” They squealed and rushed to Kid trying to wrap their arms around him as he passed a cold drink to each band member, two for himself. Everyone cringed at your friend’s outburst before all eyes were on you.

“So this is my friend I was telling you ab-“ “I’m well acquainted with this fucker” Kid narrowed his eyes at you, a snarl on his painted lips as he tried to wriggle his arm free form the death grip your friend had on him.

“What? Exes?” The tone in their voice was shocked but Kid shook his head.

“My exe” Killer spoke this had to have been the first time in years you’d heard that voice. He removed his mask and set it on his lap before opening his beer, taking more than a generous gulp.

“Yeah, we dated but it was… it didn’t end well” You sighed suddenly feeling extremely uncomfortable. “It just didn’t work out” You added and you tried not to look at Killer, everyone else in the band had the decency to busy themselves with hair, makeup, downing beer to numb the sheer vibe in the room, anything to ignore the dense atmosphere. Kid sat your friend down on another sofa, joining them, a lazy arm around their shoulders giving you death glares.

“I tried to make it work, just didn’t help any” Killer mumbled, peeling the label off the bottle, flicking it onto the floor absently as he did so.

“Excuse me?” You stared at him but tried to remain calm “Do you not remember how I tried too? It’s not my fault you have the emotional capacity of a brick”.

“Shut the fuck up!” It was Kid that snapped, slamming the empty bottle on the table at his side making everyone stare. “You don’t get to say that, you didn’t see him when you fucking left him. You weren’t the one who saw him sat in that fucking empty ass house crying every night. He could barely eat or sleep when you fucked off out his life” Kid spat, leaning forward on the sofa and glaring daggers at you.

“He ain’t good at expressing his feelings, he’s a fucking stoic piece of shit but you, you ain’t got the right to say that, not the mess you left him” “Kid, that’s enough” Killer tried to calm his friend, hands raised in defence, giving you an apologetic look.

“That shirt he’s wearing? He wears it all the damn time because even now he misses your worthless ass” Kid leaned back, angrily dropping his feet clad in heavy boots on the coffee table, eyeing you up, warning you to get out of his sight.

“I had no idea..” You balled your hands into fists, digging your nails into the palms, the slight pain grounded you, not wanting to shed tears.

“Cus you didn’t even look back” Kid spat.

Killer got up, walking over to you and gently holding your arm. “Hey, sorry about Kid, can we talk outside instead?” You nodded dumbly as he led you out the side door where some bar staff had been smoking before you both appeared.

“I didn’t know you knew Kid’s partner, I’m sorry he just went off on you, I didn’t tell him too” He mumbled, running a hand through his long blond hair, you realised watching it swing behind him how much you missed playing with it, the feel of it draped over you when he pinned you onto the bed, kissing your neck.. Well, that was three three beers catching up to you.

“I know, you’ve always been the one to have to keep a muzzle on him, nice to see somethings never change huh?” You kicked a bottle cap across the concrete offering him a slight smile. He leaned against the wall and watched you, all the things he’d wanted to say bubbling up, he repressed them and just nodded his head.

“I’m sorry about… how things ended” “Don’t, just..” Killer sighed and heard Kid yelling about ‘ten minutes before they leave his ass’ “I’m sorry, I don’t know what to say right now… I don’t think you do either, tonight blind sighted us and we just weren’t prepared and there’s no shame in that”

How could he be so calm all the time? Always the voice of reason, you missed that in your life, the balance the blond provided you. He gestured for you to follow him back inside. You parted ways, your friend going with them, you didn’t want the drama to ruin their night.

Sitting on your bed after a shower, washing off all the grime and shame from the evening you looked at your cell phone how it flashed in the darkness. Picking it you saw a familiar number, deleted from your contacts but you’d never forget the number you’d memorized, engraved on your heart.

“Can I get you a coffee tomorrow?”

Favorite thing about them:

Among the many, many things I find awesome about Hunter, one thing that’s always stuck out to me is the passionate streak constantly present in his character. Ironically, I’d argue he’s one of the most human-like characters in the agent story—unlike your colleagues in Intelligence, who hold emotion at arms length and behave as machines, or even some of your companions, a few of which choose to live life without a care or concern for others (stares at Kaliyo), Hunter is extremely invested in his cause, the state of the galaxy, and in the agent. And in the end, his genuine interest in the agent (regardless of nature) is the catalyst for the downfall of the Cabal.

Least favorite thing about them:

As for a least favorite… tbh there’s no singular thing I could think of. Even his reprehensible actions and (at times) downright cruelty play very important parts in developing his character. I suppose I very much dislike some of the interpretations of him I’ve seen, though this just boils down to differing opinions. OH—the stupid “identity reveal” at the end of the story. It sucks. It was done so badly. (He’s… he’s trans, guys. That’s all there is to it.)

Favorite line: (I have several. I am indecisive)

I believe that even with all the overwhelming Andrew Minyard content, we can never give the love this precious soul deserves.

Andrew Joseph Minyard deserves all the love in this universe.

He is very loyal.

Like, because he was often left behind most of the times in his past, it’s kind of ironic how Andrew understands the concept of family.

How willing he is to fight for his family, keep his family- even if it doesn’t show in the most obvious ways.

Friendly reminder that Andrew Minyard strike deals with people because he thinks it’s the only way to make people stay.

Friendly reminder that he is willing to go through hell and back for his family to the point of even hurting himself.

Because he could give less shit if he gets hurt. This MF is willing to go all in in protecting “his” people even if it kills him because he just don’t see anything worth living his life all the while secretly doing the best he could because he wants his family to succeed and that’s just-

Isn’t it ironic that everything Andrew Minyard are for are also the same things that ended up hurting him?

Like this kid honors promises to a fault and ensures hope when necessary (eg Kevin and Neil) when his life consisted nothing of false hopes and broken promises.

Did you know that the second character in the book to say the word fine the most is Andrew? While Neil says fine as a defense mechanism, Andrew mostly says the word to assure others that they’re going to be okay when they’re overthinking.

He also really values consent and that first kiss with Neil, when he pushed him and said he wasn’t in the head space to give it? That scene is underrated af.

Also, for someone who got lied to all his life, Andrew is so honest. He tells the truth in all its ugly glory because better terrible truths than kind lies.

Honesty suited Andrew because he was an instigator at heart and his opinions were often unpopular.

Andrew Minyard is not a good person- doesn’t try to convince someone he’s a good person.

He threatens people, he can kill without a second thought. I think this is why most people view him as “psychotic” but if you do read the times Andrew act out on violence, they’re mostly because they’re provoked by inappropriate behavior slash words.

Like with Nicky, and the things he says about Neil and Kevin. I really like that Andrew acts on that because as violent as it is and as much as I love Nicky, he tends to oversexualize someone and say unnecessary and inappropriate things.

I love how Andrew doesn’t act like he likes people. Doesn’t feel inclined to make someone comfortable.

And honestly, who can blame him when most of the foxes see him as a monster? Like I love the foxes but they’re judgmental assholes.

I really hate this about the books, like I can defend why the upperclassmen and even his own family sees him as such but it just gets to me.

Because for me, out of all the people there is in the world, the foxes should’ve been the first people to understand that Andrew was human with real feelings- that he didn’t have to act on a certain way.

I will never get over about how until the end of the book, the rest of the foxes still sees him that way.

As someone who went thru a lot of shit, Andrew was such a comfort character. Personally, I feel like his character arc was one of the best ones I’ve read.

He’s coping, still coping- and that’s okay.

Y’know what I love about Andrew most? He actively goes to therapy. In a way, despite seemingly giving up on everything, kid is willing to fix himself.

And maybe the results are slow or next to none but so what? He doesn’t have to recover immediately and honestly, reading AFTG back in a time when I was pressuring myself to heal fast because I was too frustrated with everything- reading Andrew was like getting washed by a cold bucket of water.

Recovery takes time. Healing is a process. And it could even take years and no matter how long it takes, it’s okay ✨

Also, another thing I like about Andrew’s character was that Nora made a point about not forgiving abusers. Most books tend to send that message (which is disgusting) but with Andrew’s character, it’s clear that you don’t have to attach yourself to your abusers.

Forgiving abusers is not a necessary part of the healing process.

This is getting dark so to lighten things up a bit, Andrew has a sweet tooth. He loves ice cream.

Also, he majored in criminal justice and I know Nora said he did that just to be a troll but I like to believe that deep inside, he wants to help those who are in a situation like him and actually make the world a better place.

Andrew knows what to do when someone’s breaking down. Like, with every character, his apathy aside, he always knows how to act.

Also, he’s one of those annoying even-if-I-don’t-make-an-effort-I’m-talented-af-and-can-still-perform-well-so-sue-me assholes and normally I hate those type of characters but Andrew was an exemption.

Like, we do not talk enough about the fact that he asked Wymack to choose between numbers 1 - 5 and only let that number of goals in of the opposing team that night before shutting down the goal completely.

Or that he only let 13 of the ravens’ shots - the nation’s best team - in and that is oh my gods where do I even begin with Andrew Joseph Minyard being a superior goalie I cannot-

Also the fact that Andrew completely shut down the goal when Neil freaking asked him to- who is this man?

What a simp. What power.

I hope in the AFTG universe, someone out there is doing the god’s work and compiling his saves. Like, I don’t normally watch sports stuff cuz I hate sports but I would pay good money to see that yes sir I will.

We could talk about Andrew’s saves more but that just deserves its own post cuz it’s chef kisses

We do not talk enough about Andrew’s eidetic memory. Seriously, we don’t.

Also, you can say all you want that he’s an emo kid but kid has good fashion sense.

Andrew seriously has the best lines in the series. Did some of them made me choke and wheeze and cringe? Yes. But did most of them make me cry like a bitch and hit my heart right where it hurts? Also yes.

Also, some of them were lowkey Shakespearean and I refuse to believe that Andrew doesn’t read Shakespeare-

Bless you, anon. I mean, I knew this one was coming, but bless you.

Why I like them

I mean, half the things I wrote about Rena apply here too, it's the same archetype of well-done tsundere. (Yeah, tsundere, fight me I'm not wrong.) Socially-impaired lonely kiddo who tries way too hard to be unlikeable because he knows nothing else. Poor dude.

I pointed out the presence of the 'Prodigy Who Knows It' trope with Touka, and Enzan kinda represents the opposite trope -- what I call the 'False Prodigy.' Yeah, he's wicked sharp, he's an ace operator, and at least in the anime, holding a full-time job in a high up company position. But. All versions of the narrative make very clear how much Enzan worked and sacrificed to get to that point. He's extremely smart in an academic and logical sense, but his only manner of socializing is reading people like in a court room or poker match. He's so used to adults in the cold and callous business and professional world that he kinda forgets that, like, honest and nice people exist. If all you're looking for is backstabbers, all you're gonna get is an anxiety disorder. He's an ace operator, but he spends hours and hours every day training as one. Not to mention, Blues is pretty capable on his own, so half the time Enzan's not actually doing that much in terms of operating -- contrast teams like, say, the Hikari twins, whose lack of independent strength and Rock's civilian navi status were traded for iron-clad teamwork. (Enzan and Blues kinda get to this point eventually, but depending on which version of the story you're looking at, this can take a long time.) And yeah, going by anime canon specifically, Enzan serves a full-time position as IPC's vice president. Because Shuuseki is a horrible little shite and made his adolescent kid work that position instead of just hiring someone to do it like a sane person.

Actually, to harp on Shuuseki more, Enzan's the way he is because he's got one of the shittiest parents out there. Shuuseki's constantly bullying his kid into taking on too much, while simultaneously never being around to, y'know, be a parent. Enzan's mother is dead. His only social interaction for a long time was either the people he competed against, other business professionals, other Officials (in the game and manga,) and Blues. His only friend was Blues, and the two clearly have an uneven power dynamic. It takes Netto's extreme persistance for him to even halfway soften up. The level of crap this poor kid's been through, good Lord. Why I don’t

He's a bit too competent for an adolescent if you ask me. I can see extreme skill in one area, and I can see the same skill levels in an adult that's had multiple decades to learn this all... but, Enzan's eleven. (At least, according to the manga.) Like, no. Eleven-year-olds aren't going to be that competent. Sorry. Tone it down a little, Capcom. Favorite episode (scene if movie)

The ending scene in Stream episode 7, where Netto's talking to him for the last time before heading back to Japan. Favorite season/movie

First Impression:

Ironically, when I first saw Lieutenant Ninety, I wasn’t too keen on him. His sculpt was a bit jarring to me after coming from Stingray, Thunderbirds, and Captain Scarlet. I was like, “what a funny little man, with that funny face.” But he also sounded exactly like Brains and Gordon as well, which took some getting used to. David Graham didn’t try to change the voices much between characters so something, if I wasn’t looking, I thought I heard Gordon speak but no—it was Ninety. Wrong show.

Impression Now:

OKAY SO, complete turnaround. After I was about maybe six episodes in, suddenly I saw The Light and Ninety became my favorite character in Fireball XL5. I got used to the style of the puppets and thought he was actually absurdly cute. I love his earnestness and drive to do the best he can in any situation, especially when dealing with Commander Zero who blows his top at the slightest irritation. The episode where he passes his astronaut wings (“Flight to Danger”) was just such an emotional watch for me. He almost died, but thankfully had remembered to take his oxygen pills—keeping him alive long enough for Steve to find him drifting around in space:

MY GOSH. Yeah, I was a mess after watching that episode and became just overall invested in him ever after. He also has an incredibly deep backstory that is never once touched on in the actual series. It’s worth a look.

Favorite Moment:

So I don’t really know if I have a significant moment that I call my favorite. I just get so excited whenever I see him show up. But One of the tiny moments I love is when the team is trying to raise money for charity by performing the show’s theme song, and Ninety auditions and he can’t sing AT ALL. His voice cracks and he’s totally off tune and it’s just stinking adorable. I would have chosen him anyway.

Idea for a Story:

Because I’m a shipper at heart, and there’s literally no one to ship Ninety with in the show, I’d love to write a short fic one day with Ninety/OC. I want to explore Space City a bit more because I loved what I saw of it whenever we got the rare moment to leave the command center. I’d love to have an OC working at one of the shops we’ve seen in the show and encourage Ninety’s attempts to grow into his own and secure his space in Space City.

Unpopular Opinion:

So I don’t actually find the friction between Ninety and Zero. I know Commander Zero can and does fly off the handle sometimes. He really does have a short fuse. And sure, it’s not fair that he takes it out on Ninety. But uh, have you ever met Zero’s son? That boy would be a constant source of stress to me LOL. I love Zero’s wife, though. She’s great. Tough as nails but supportive. Anyway, I do kind of love that dynamic with Ninety and Zero because it’s just so realistic and reflective of real working relationships. You can have a pretty good boss but you still need to learn how to weather their tempers when something goes wrong. I admire how well Ninety faces those moments, and I’ve definitely taken a page out of his book when things like that happen at my job.

Favorite Relationship:

Zero and Ninety. Yeah, I’m a broken record here, but I do love how they work together on a daily basis. Zero trusts Ninety to support him in the command center. He’s working an important job as a controller. But there’s also a father/son dynamic there that I love seeing. Knowing Ninety’s backstory and that he’s basically on his own in Space City, it’s so so nice to see that he has a built in support system with his boss. He seems to have great relationships with the Fireball XL5 crew, but they’re so rarely grounded that Ninety can only really build close relationships with whoever actually stays behind—and that’s definitely Zero.

Favorite headcanon:

I believe that Ninety is a kid at heart, and in his spare time, indulges in building model kits and reading comics and maybe even filling up coloring books—anything to lower his stress and connect with the pure little soul within him.
