TTRPG Read-Through: Patchwork World

Here is a read-through I did last year (originally posted on Twitter) of one of the most unique PbtA games I've ever read: Patchwork World by Aaron King! - Christian

Credits up first. I know a lot of these folks and they are really cool! Excited to dig into this. I've heard good things, and it's been a while since I've read or played any Powered by the Apocalypse.

This is a cool, strong set up for me. I really like settings that ask characters to face a changing world and either take up change themselves or work to restore the old way of things. It's a headspace I find myself in a lot IRL these days so it's fun to explore.

I'm interested to see how the no stats, no playbooks angle of this game works, considering playbooks are typically such a staple of PbtA games.

Standard three-tired success, mixed success, fail forward resolution for rolls here and questions on the moves determine your bonus to the roll. Easy peasy. +2 is the max bonus.

Other types of rolls are described here. Interested to see how they come into play. I also love clocks and use them in pretty much every game I run so it's nice to see those laid out here too.

We just love a lil guy, don't we folks?

A good chunk of the opening here is spent on laying out a lot of solid foundations of roleplaying generally. It feels like a book (so far) that would work for entirely new players. It doesn't feel essential for me, but I never mind a game that supports varied experience levels.

Character creation is wide open, especially since there aren't playbooks and the text stresses that character creation is very much worldbuilding because of this. Fate-like concepts and tags are in here too which are things I generally enjoy. I like the Drawback mechanic.

Moves are in the playback I set in the other room so I'm gonna go grab those. You get two chosen moves and everyone has access to a number of default moves. You've got three other life/XP things to keep track of too. I'm especially interested in Hex.

There are a lot of moves! They seem quite varied and often very weird, fitting well with the titular patchwork world. You can have a duck's slick soul to dodge more easily or a magical space suit or speak to birds or be good at cartography. Overwhelming, but in an exciting way.

You also choose a community as a party. While PCs all have their original homelands (before the end of the old worlds), you know have a community that gets its own little sheet. This is a cool reshaping of the Gangs from Blades. I also like how the community can change over time.

Coming back to a PbtA game after months of more OSR-minded stuff, I think a lot of what these games contain are things that experienced players would say you could just do in any game at any time that it makes sense in the story, but I do find value in stating what's possible.

Esp since many players come to games with artificial limits on their options (whether that's from video games, more traditional RPGs, etc.). I just think good GMing here requires making sure that the players don't limit themselves just to the bevy of explicit options either.

GM moves (mostly to guide the response to failed rolls). I really think the community aspect of this set up is one of the biggest appeals to me so far. That and the wild list of moves, which I'm sure makes for amazing parties of characters.

I always feel like it's never something I should be in my own writing (for some probably unnecessary reason), but I enjoy the first-person, casual writing style throughout the book. Makes for a very chill read.

Good to see this game employs the Branson Reese style of NPC naming.

Stress acts as a single catch-all health and challenge rating for NPCs. Ideally, I'd hope this would help lead to the PCs approaching encounters with more than just violence.

Sections like this are what I'm referring to when I say this book feels very friendly to new players. It's got little anecdotes and thoughts like this throughout.

Look, it's been a while since I've seen A Christmas Story but... it didn't have ghosts in it right?

There's a sample adventure in the back (which I'll skip for this read-through) plus loads of random tables. Some wonderfully bizarre stuff in the characters and faction tables. Really gives you a good idea for how gonzo you can go with the setting.

Love these two in particular

Optional rules include hard mode (which I just think is kind of funny to see in PbtA, but could be cool if you lean heavy into the post-apoc setting) and some optional moves. I like that some moves focus on romance, something I enjoy IRL but never think to focus on in games.

I was wondering why this was the sixth edition!

That's all for the book itself. Going back to the packet to dig into the things I missed. Some expected bits in here but always one or two unique options I really enjoy. Leaking hex is cool (and could have some troubling cascade effects in certain situations).

I definitely wish, at least in sitting down to read like this, that the contents of the player packet was also in the book itself. I think PbtA has this tendency of leading to loads of pages on the table, but it can make them very easy to pick up and play or to learn as you play.

That element is definitely here, but I think the vast number of wide-ranging moves and the excitement that would drum up in my player group would more than makeup for that initial overwhelming feel of "whoa, that's a lot of papers out on the table".

Overall, it's the most I've wanted to play a game in this style in a while. I like that the base setup for the world is very much up to the players to determine via the characters they make. I like that PCs here will probably feel unlike any other folks have played before.

The community aspect feels like where I'd want to center my story around, as a player. Seeing that shift and change over time feels like it would be very rewarding and would help lean into the "the old world is dead, what do we want the new world to look like?" theme I enjoy.

Because Aaron King is cool and recently hit a lot of Twitter followers, Patchwork Worlds is now Pay-what-you-want over on Itch.

say there's a day where you come home from a long day and the house is literally spotless bc hao offered to clean it, thinking you were mostly likely tired

not just that but he'll always talk to you when your feeling down and listen to whatever you have to say and try to make the situatio better

and out of the blue he'll just message you and say that he wants to be with you

or he'll just sit on facetime with you for hours on end while studying and not say much, only because he wants you to be with him

you are his favourite person to be with and he will always show that through his quality of time

especially seeing how in the taerae he went to each member's room to see how their doing, idk man that just did things to me

i was torn between this and acts of service tbh but i think woa suits ricky so well

like hanbin, he'd always remind you of how much you mean to him as a partner and never make you second guess his feelings for you

Okay. K - Diari Del Klondike has got to be one of the goofiest, dumbest, most illogical series yet with only 2 episodes. Barbieri is all like: yeah I'm going to make these stories to be consistent with Rosa and fill up the parts that he didn't write. So you expect that he's going to think about continuity. Then this episode he introduced Glomgold in the Klondike. You serious? That's not only going against Rosa, that's going against BARKS! BARKS?! You don't contradict Barks, that's sin in the Duck comics world. Scrooge doesn't know who Glomgold is until when they meet in the first ever Barks story. Rosa went around this by making sure that Scrooge never learns Glomgold his name in LaToS Chapter 6 The terror of the transvaal. Gervasio went around this by just avoiding these characters to directly interact in the past. They don't meet aside from that one Rosa appearance, so he makes sure that they don't meet. Glomgold can take over Duckburg and fake his curriculum vitae all he wants, but he doesn't interact with Scrooge. Meanwhile Barbieri is all like:

Does he just not know or does he not care? 'I will be building upon Rosa' is a pretty big claim. But that's obviously not the case here so, like, huh, what, why,, i am confusw.

Then look at the random new 'lore' he creates that only rivals the bullshit Kari Korhonen pulled in the McDuck Diaries(funnily enough also a diary. It seems Scrooge has a lot of those together with the secret one that Donald finds). Korhonen had literally every single character be ancestor or family member of present day character. It was weird, but I don't mind it too much compared to what Barbieri did.

Cause for some reason we need Blackheart Beagle to also show up in the Klondike with a new name?????? Huh?? Where did that come from? Why? That's the goofiest thing ever.

Then we need to give Scrooge this treasure that he actually holds very dear even though we have never seen it before.

Then we need to give Scrooge a dog sidekick that he just has had through his Klondike period.

Then we establish that he was actually best friends with Goldie all the time even though she drugged him, he kidnapped her, she stole from him, they beat the shit out of each other, and Rosa shows that their relationship is very rocky and terrible which is what made their love story so good. But no now they're bffs. Sure.

And I don't get the whole diary thing either? What point does it serve? It only makes everything more annoying to read because it gets broken up by HDL talking. Is it just to fill up pages? Idk

Then Scrooge's glasses why does he need those why why why why why

You get the chance to write about the Klondike, arguably one of the most exciting things in the donald duck universe and you decide to write the lamest stories ever. It's not like Barbieri can't write cool shit.

Some of his Wizards of Mickey chapters are the only wizards of mickey stories ever that are in the inducks top 10000. If you somehow manage to write good wizards of mickey stories you're a goddamn wizard (pun not intended).

So why is K so incredibly dull? I don't get it. I only have questions it's so weirddd

Why does it have references to life and times even though it directly contradicts it? You don't have to adhere to the Rosa Canon but then why do you say that you do? I don't get it.

Why is Flintheart Glomgold just chilling with Soapy Slick? This feels like a fever dream. You were somehow allowed to do this, this is crazy, so why is the result so boring? How? How can Soapy slick and Flintheart Glomgold be boring? *insert Tumblr blabbering*

There's so much goofy stuff. Scrooge as hulpsinterklaas is canon.

Only the Dutch will understand that this is a big deal.

Why would panini want a new series taking place in the past? Why did they ask Barbieri to write this? Or was it his own initiative? Even then, why would Bertani give the green light? The Klondike is a holy part of the duckverse. Or can people just do this if they want to? I can't imagine that. Rosa and Korhonen couldn't just write about Scrooge's past. They needed to have a reason (the reason usually being demand from the publisher). But if panini wanted it, then why don't they promote it? They have only placed these stories in issues where the cover could be something else.

A big new part of Scrooge's past is revealed!! That will sell well! How do we let the people know? BY MAKING THIS

It's just such a strange series. And all the random OC's that pop up as well, but those are the least weird thing.

The battle has begun, you fly out blasting down TIE fighters as you help keep them off everyone.

You see Poe getting tailed by two and you get your ass in gear and blast them both out of the sky.

“Hey there fly boy, looked like you could use some help over there” you say flying next to him.

“Y/n? Y/N! Oh my maker is it great to see you. But wait, your father never wanted you to leave the farm. As much as I love you being here, it's too dangerous, you need to get out of here.” He says.

“I’ll explain everything later! But right now we need to win this war general” you divert your x wing to destroy more TIE fighters and help them take out the command ship. Poe is in awe of your skills as a pilot, ever since you were children on Yavin 4 and you both dreamed of following in both your mothers foot footsteps in fighting for the resistance. However when Poe ran away to be a spice runner, your father got sick and you needed to watch over the farm.

Ever since you were kids Poe has loved you, even when he left those feelings never left, same can be said for you. So now that you are here, fighting in your mothers X wing, those same feelings from when you were younger have come back in full force. He thanks the maker that you’ve come back into his life because he won’t waste this second chance.

When you all arrive back on Ajan Kloss, you run to find Poe. His arm is in a sling but when he sees you he runs towards you at breakneck speed. You wrap your arms around his neck and hold him close, but not too tight as to hurt his already injured arm.

“Stardust,” he whispers into your neck, his hot breath causing a blush to rise to your cheeks, “I can’t believe we won and with your help. How’d you get your old man to let you leave the farm?”

“He knew he couldn’t keep me there forever and when the call came over the comms he knew that I was needed here, just like my mom.” You say smiling while pulling away, “you look good fly boy, the scruff suits you.”

He looks at you with stars in his eyes, you notice his eyes move down towards your lips for a microsecond. You get the gist of what he wants so you slip one hand up the back of his neck and pull him in for a very overdue kiss. It’s slow and sweet, his one good arm goes to your waist as you continue. All the feelings you both had as teens raised back to the surface as your lips mold together. You hear a cough behind you and pull away, lips kissed swollen and faces red.

You turn to see 2 people who smile at Poe, “Fin, Rey! This is Y/n, she was a childhood friend of mine on Yavin 4, well I don’t think I can call you a friend anymore.” He smiles at you. You place your hand in his and smile at his friends.

“It’s nice to meet you,” you greet.

“Come on stardust, there’s a lot to show you,” Poe says as you all begin to walk towards camp, followed by a cute orange and white droid named BB-8.

A/n: eeeeeee i finally finished rise of skywalker and dudes I shed so many tears 😭 I’m rewatching the entire saga including shows this time. I’m so excited to write for Poe he is my fave along with Obi Wan and Leia! The scene at exegol was insane I got chills especially when Lando said “there are more of us” chills

Here's what I've got so far, anyway

Yo, Technoblade he was just 14 when his parents made a very strange machine!

Unlike in Danny Phantom, Techno would be an only child. Which is exhausting. His parents care more about their research than they care about him. And as the kid of the weird scientists, he has NO FRIENDS at school. (That's right, its a No One Knows AU. So much angst potential). He's bullied, poor piggy.

His parents portal doesn't work, so for curiosity sake he goes inside and-oops! The portal to The Ghost Zone opens on top of him, half killing him and giving him ghost powers.

Cue Theme Song.

The fic would be THREE CHAPTERS! NO LONGER THAN THREE!

Anyway, first chapter would be dedicated to Technoblade fighting off the weird musician ghosty with fire powers, Wilbur Soot. Wilbur Soot is using his musical abilities to brainwash everyone into basically worshipping him. DP Technoblade would defeat him by pointing out how cringe it was that Wilbur Soot had to brainwash everyone to even listening to his music. Lame. The dude had 0 confidence in his own music. Wilbur Soot gets super peeved off about this, ready to blast Technoblade's eardrums when Technoblade offhandedly mentions he didn’t need to brainwash everyone anyways. Because his music is good. Wilbur Soot is stopped by that. Wilbur seems legitimately excited that someone enjoys his music without the brainwashing, and Technoblade rolls with it. Wilbur Soot promises to stop with the brainwashing if Technoblade promises to meet up and let him play music for him. Technoblade agrees, but says he can't do it too often because he has so much work keeping the ghosts in line.

Wilbur Soot tells him not to worry about it. He'll handle it.

Suddenly, a lot less ghosts come through the portal.

Chapter 2 sees a different ghost causing issues. At first, Technoblade doesn't see it as an issue. Why should he care that all the adults are listening to some trash discs? It doesn't effect him. And Wilbur Soot seems to get a kick out of absolutely rinsing the music disc at every opportunity, saying it sounded like the artist was "forced to write a song for a child".

Techno's parents wanting to go off on some cruise? Totally fine with him. Less dangerous with his parents not around. And Technoblade is desperate for a break. The ghosts have chilled out quite a bit, but it's hard to do school work AND worry about whether or not your family's water was going to get cut off. He never gets to be a kid.

Which is why he is so annoyed when a child ghost with a pirate ship attacks his house. The kid steals a bunch of Tech from his parents. The kid, calling himself Tommy Innit, is very annoying. Technoblade tries to stop him, but fails.

Something else would go here, but basically all the parents get kidnapped on Tommy Innit's pirate cruise for *reasons* and Techno goes to save them. Only to find a very bored Wilbur Soot dressed as a pirate, and a very exhuberant Tommy Innit speaking like a pirate. Technoblade asks what Wilbur is even doing there, and Wilbur Soot says that he has to humor his little brother sometimes.

Tommy Innit throws all the stops at Technoblade. Canons, guns, swordfighting, swashbuckling, etc. Tommy Innit is have the time of his life (or death). He keeps talking about how fun the whole thing is. Or complaining when Technoblade "cheats". Technoblade is about to lose, when he tells Tommy Innit he can't just shoot him. He needs to make Techno walk the plank. Tommy Innit eagerly agrees, and points him towards the plank. He asks Techno if he has any last words and Techno points out that Wilbur Soot should walk the plank as well. Wilbur Soot is just flabbergasted by that, But Techno points out that Wilbur didn't help at all when his Captain needed him. It was worth walking the plank. Tommy Innit agrees, and tries to get Wilbur to also walked the plank. Wilbur refuses. Techno points out that that means it's a mutiny. Tommy Innit is gleeful at the concept of a mutiny, pointing his sword at Wilbur Soot. Wilbur is not all that amused. Technoblade volunteers his services in bringing the "treacherous snake" down in exchange for not having to walk the plank. Tommy Innit agrees and Technoblade full tackles Wilbur Soot, much to Wilbur Soot's dismay and Tommy Innit's delight. They roll around on the deck for a bit, Techno promising he will make it up to Wilbur if he just plays along. Wilbur gives in and goes overdramatic with it.

Tommy Innit is over the moon. He is having so much fun. Wilbur, why didn't you tell him Techno was so much fun? Technoblade points out that there was no way that all the kidnapped adults were any fun. Tommy Innit hadn't even noticed that they evacuated.

Tommy Innit looks and is upset that all of his prisoners have disappeared. No one ever wants to play with him. Technoblade offers to play with him occasionally, if he would, you know, not kidnap people.

Tommy Innit asks if he can kidnap Techno sometimes, instead, because its funny. Techno agrees, but not more than once a month. He has responsibilities. He can't play all the time.

Tommy Innit Agrees, super happy with the idea.

Suddeny, Technoblade's home no longer has to worry about bills anymore. Huh. Maybe his parents finally started to act like parents. He doesn't really complain when Tommy Innit and Wilbur Soot start monopolizing more of his time.

Chapter 3 Listen, this chapter is going to be Reign Storm. But there is no Vlad character in this AU, so I don't know how to start it. Maybe Techno's parents go into the Ghost Zone and steal the ring of rage? Who knows. But the Ghost King is awake, finally free from the eternal sleep he was forced into. Thousands of ghost refugees pour out of the portal. Technoblade is incredibly concerned that he doesn't see Wilbur or Tommy.

Technoblade is doing his best keeping all of the ghosts from hurting people, plus playing keep away with the giant ghost crows that were trying to return the ring of rage back to the Ghost King. Techno is exhausted, everyone is terrified, his parents are trying to use inventions that might get them killed. He's havinf a bad day.

The ghost king pulls the entire town into the ghost zone.

Technoblade is shocked by the whole thing, terrified with no way to fix it.

And then the Ghost King shows up.

King Philza is intense. Burning crown on his head with regal robes flowing all around. Wings blacked than the night sky raised behind him.

He demands the ring back, or else.

Technoblade chooses the latter.

It's not a close fight at all. Technoblade is tired and the ghost king is POWERFUL, even without the ring. Technoblade is forced to change back into his human form, in front of everyone to see. His secret is out, he's injured, and he isn't able to move out of the crater in the ground the ghost king knocked him into.

The king takes back the Ring of Rage, putting it on his finger. He's even more powerful, which Technoblade thinks is cheating. The Ghost King raises a hand and intends to wipe Techno from existence-

Two figures block the hand. Both start shouting at the Ghost King, incredibly annoyed that their Dad would attack their friend. That Technoblade hasn't even had his first deathday and that Dadza was being a bully.

King Philza is incredibly confused. There is no way that Technoblade hasn't reached his first deathday. He's too powerful. But Wilbur Soot and Tommy Innit insist.

Technoblade is a young ghost and he's like a brother to them.

No actually-

He is their brother.

Technoblade tries valiantly to crawl out of the crater. He is hurt, and can't focus on all of the conversation. One minute he is staring at the remains of the football field-

The next he is staring into piercing blue eyes. He flinches back, but two fingers touch his temple. And then everything is black.

Technoblade wakes in a bed inside Philza's Keep, deep in the ghost zone. He cannot leave, phasing through things doesn't work. He is stuck.

Wilbur and Tommy seem over the moon. Their Dad is finally home and they can play with Techno whenever they want!

King Philza seems indulgent of his sons, but doesn't have a ton of time. It takes time to reprganize the entirety of the Infinite Realms under he control. It takes effort into crushing all resistance.

But he makes it known that his newest son WILL behave. He shows Techno a glass ball, inside containing the entirety of Techno's whole town. It would be so easy to shatter.

Technoblade submits, being hugged tightly by an excited Wilbur and Tommy.

So, yeah, I would love to get around to writing that. Especially fleshing out some of the shakier parts lol. But basically Wilbur is Ember, Tommy is Youngblood, and Phil is Pariah Dark. With a LOT of liberties thrown in!

Okay. So wow. Gross.. also wow.. that was so entertaining and enjoyable and honestly I had my feet kicking up behind me while I was reading.

I had a whole grimace on my face reading that scene. Very descriptive.. very detailed.. did I say gross?

1. Aw I had the feels for MC shame omg. Poor thing. So many emotions. I felt the pain. Especially when explaining the hand scar. Sorry if I'm being spoilery I'm tryna be chill here.

2. I love that you can choose to just go with this is my nature so fuck u mentality or actually try to go against it.

3. Very detailed.. very gross scene. It was great. I don't generally read much horror IFs. I hate horror movies but I really enjoyed this. A testiment to how really good this was.

4. The beast scene was both kinda cute and bittersweet left me with some sadness once again.

Looking forward to getting to know Felix and Eden. Well all the ROs actually. Im very intrigued how the relationship dynamics will work with MCs lil issue.

MC's shame is going to be a common theme/occurrence throughout. I wanted to write a somewhat cathartic story about healing from trauma + how trauma can make you act in ways that aren't the best! MC is far from perfect, and I plan to delve into that more in future chapters.

YES!!! I love the trope of giving in to your nature no matter how grotesque it may be vs. fighting that and trying to become a different person....

I'm honored you checked Nemisi out! I love horror, but I haven't written much of it personally (especially not things I've shown anyone besides my best friend) so this IF is definitely going to be an exercise for my brain writing that genre.

The cat scene was one I wasn't expecting to have such an impact to be honest! But I needed to give the MC some more human aspects, since no matter what they think are now, they did start out in life as one and they still experience human emotions, like it or not.

Writing character interactions is one of my favorite things to do! So I'm excited to show off the dynamics. I also love writing romance so I cannot WAIT to get to that. I love characters who either help each other heal or make each other worse.

...so you're going to get an answer to both! I am honestly SO thrilled that you asked about the Fed kidnapping fic, because I have been DYING to talk about it! The amount of space it takes up in my waking and sleeping thoughts is CONSIDERABLE. Just the outline is right now is as long as [conduct not unbecoming]! 😭 I'm still holding a lot of cards close to my chest regarding this fic, but I'll give you some basics, and a tiny snippet of my outline! But before I do, just a heads up: this fic is actively going to explore darker topics and themes than I've explored in any of my published writing thus far. Characters are going to get seriously physically and psychologically hurt, face some pretty sadistic enemies, and have to reckon with some really intense moments. Because it is me I can promise 1) no major character death, and 2) a happy ending, but there will definitely be suffering before that happens. See more below the page break. 💙

Essentially, it is going to be one long sequel to my entire 'Percy's senior year (mis)Adventures' series (you'll see why once it's out), and it will be set just after his sophomore year at New Rome University. He and Annabeth are back in NYC for the summer, Annabeth has an internship, but he's still trying to figure out how to spend his summer. He's got some tentative hopes and plans, but because he's Percy Jackson...well, does anything ever go right for him? Here's a chunk of what will become the first chapter. You'll probably be able to tell what I mean by 'Fed kidnapping' after this. 😉

"Percy absently unlocks the front door, arms full of bags, not looking up but calling to his mom that he's home. 

It's as if the apartment is holding its breath. No one greets him, he looks up, concerned. "Mom?"

A toddler's squeal is heard from the living room, and is abruptly cut off.

He doesn't even stop to put down the bags, palms Riptide but doesn't upcap yet, comes charging in…and is brought up short by the presence of men in dark suits surrounding his terrified parents and baby sister. More suits emerge from the kitchen, weapons drawn.

Percy thinks for a moment about fighting, but freezes when the suits in the living room also draw their weapons and point them at him. He stiffens and holds his bag-laden hands away from his body. Too many guns to risk an open fight, not in this setting.

A suit who looks like he might be the leader has been sitting in Percy's favorite chair, cool as a cucumber, the whole time. With everyone frozen, he stands and casually starts talking. He is bland and boring looking, very gray, and he looks oddly familiar to Percy - though he can't figure out why.

"Hello, Perseus."

"Who the hell are you?" (Angry but controlled, eyes darting)

"An excellent question. But we need not concern ourselves with those particularities right now." (Smiles placatingly) 

Percy gives him a withering look.

"Now now, none of that. Your country is in need of men like you, son." (Charming, but only barely, flashes an official-looking badge)

"If this is the beginning of some kind of weird military recruitment spiel, don't bother. I heard enough of those in high school. I'm, uh…a pacifist." (Wary, thinking frantically)

"A pacifist, eh? Been in a lot of fights for someone who doesn't believe in violence," Rattles off a brief list of Percy's history of school incidents. (Still barely charming)

Percy is shaken by how much this guy knows, but doesn't want to show it. How does this guy know who he is? Who is he?

"...so don't try to lie to me, boy. It won't end well for you." (A hint of real menace)

Percy wants to snark back, but his danger sense warns him to shut up…for now. Probably not for long.

"Now, if you're done with the smart remarks, this is how this is going to work. You are going to put those bags on the floor. You are going to turn around, and you are going to put your hands on the wall behind you. You will be searched and secured. You will not resist. And you will come with us, quietly."

Percy is still, mind racing. This is no military recruitment spiel. So why does the government want him? Do they still think he's a potential domestic terrorist, or have they discovered he's more than meets the eye? So he falls back on the old standby: making fun of his enemies. "Very original, 007. What movie are you stealing all the cheesy lines from?"

Lead Suit does not like Percy's attitude, but mostly stays cool - only small cracks appear in the armor. But he now gives a command, and suddenly red laser dots appear on the heads of his mom, Paul, and Estelle. 

"I don't think you really appreciate the gravity of your situation, Mr. Jackson. Should you not decide to cooperate with us…well, actions have consequences."'

...dun dun dun! So yeah, I think you can parse out where this might potentially be going. 💀 I'm actually incredibly excited to write it, to get it out of this abbreviated form and onto ao3! But I have to finish 'Percy's senior year (mis)Adventures' first, or a bunch of things won't make sense. 😉

sorry gaymers i'm twstposting again

so i started a yokohama kaidashi kikou inspired (kinda) zombie apocalypse twst au. i'm currently writing it as a fanfic but i'll probs draw a bit for it too. i say its ykk inspired bc it's more "soft apocalypse" bc i love that kind of thing. (though there is some angst/intense shit for you pain lovers out there, mostly in the first chapter but it's also gonna be sprinkled throughout)

uhhh but yeah it's from epel's perspective but i kinda have everyone in it. each dorm has their own post-apocalyptic chill spot/hobby/business. i'm not gonna talk about them all here tho as i want it to be revealed in the fic. may talk abt it later tho.

i'm having trouble with deciding on ships to put in the background. the main focus is obviously their lives during the apocalypse but for some characters i think it can be used for development and for others i just think its fun.

prolly gonna have rooktrey. however, i need help deciding who i want riddle to be with. my multishipper ass is losing my mind over having to pick one. appletart (riddle/epel) would be neat but im kinda ehhhh for this one. then there's riddle/che'nya cuz he shows up later and theres a lot of intereting childhood friends -> lovers stuff there that i can play with + riddle finally being able to enjoy his company. and then maybe riddle/ruggie bc they make me happy and also i think ruggie would do a good job of pushing riddle out of his comfort zone a bit.

considering putting idia with someone cuz they're kinda learning to cope and live their life more in this but also i love the idea of them being able to be happy by themself. but also they'll have a neat dynamic with diasomnia in this so possibly malleus or silver but irdk.

Requesting some Rowan worldbuilding for WIP Wednesday this week, because I love the concept. What are some of the primary elements from Fallout and Borderlands that inspired you? Other than sci-fi, what genre do you see this being? In this future are people chill with queer relationships or is that an obstacle people are going to have to deal with? You don't have to answer all the questions but if any of them catch your fancy I would be happy to hear it. Or if there are any other random pieces of information you'd like to share!

So, full disclosure, Fate is Just the Half of It grew out of a concept for a Rhack (Borderlands) fic set in the world of Fallout 4.

The main Fallout part of the inspiration is a post-apocalyptic world with people surviving in different ways and different societies, plus several factions, each of which believes they have the right idea of what the new world should be like. Also, a man-out-of-time premise for one half of the main duo, being a survivor of cryogenic freeze; and exploring the themes of identity and humanity for the other, being a digitally preserved consciousness of a pre-apocalypse person, now living in a lifelike android body.

(In short, if you know Fallout 4, RhysRowan is not quite the Sole Survivor, but in similar shoes; and Jack is a self-aware synth. Also, both these facts are revealed in chapters 1 and 2, so I'm not really spoiling here.)

So the main Borderlands influence is the main characters. Jack Howard, who refused to change his first name for this story, is inspired by Handsome Jack, albeit with a less... villainous life trajectory. Another easy way to picture Jack Howard is to take MCU's Tony Stark and never give him the existential crisis of Iron Man 1. So, brilliant industrialist, charismatic douchebag, really good at capitalism, emotionally closed off from everyone except very, very select few. And Rowan Woods, modeled after Rhys Strongfork, an ambitious young engineer who, instead of taking a technically-minded job, takes a shot at being the PA of someone he'd admired for a really long time. Wouldn't you know it, they fall in love, but then apocalypse happens.

Genre-wise, I think FiJtHoI (wow, what an acronym) will mainly feature sci-fi and romance. There's adventure, there's drama, and there will be a happy ever after.

Which brings me to the last question: are people in the future I write cool with queer relationships? Yes. Parts of the story will be set in an alternative near-ish future (late 21st century), and parts, two hundred years later. And in both of these times, queer relationships are universally accepted in my story world. (As are trans people, by the way; Rowan is a trans man.) I give my queer characters plenty of obstacles to overcome on their way to happiness, but I also like to give them a world where they can be who they are and love who they love without fear of discrimination or violence.

(That's not to say I'm writing a post-apocalyptic utopia. Other forms of prejudice may well be present: for example, differences in opinion on whether sentient AIs are deserving of human rights.)

🎉 Happy 2-Year Blog Anniversary~ 🎉

Wow, are we really that old now— 😂 nswrhiwgejfnkdb It always feels so surreal when I think about how long I’ve been in the TWST fandom, or about how much the fandom has grown since the launch of this blog (especially with TWST EN making the game more accessible to the international audience). We’ve almost done with the main story (in JP), too!! Many more exciting things are afoot!

If you’ll pardon the pun, Raven at the Writing Desk has become an integral piece of my world. It’s a nice and quiet spot for me to retreat to when I need a break from the reality. The blog was also with me through some major moments in my life, so it has accumulated a lot of sentimental value over the years. It’s very much close to my heart.

I’ll always be thankful for having this blog to word vomit out my theories, analyses, thoughts, brainrot, and creative writings. hi, hello everyone! i'm jamal and here's my stoic, slightly emotionally constipated scientist jin dosoo. super excited to be here (haven't been in a tumblr rp for years so i'm a little nervous) but i hope i can write with every amazing writer here! here's dosoo's brief info (will be updated gradually) and here's dosoo's app that contains her story pre- and post-outbreak. below the cut is some trivia about her and some wanted connection (which is not much). i'm also available on discord for a discussion! :D

trivia:

dosoo is the only daughter in her family. she has (had?) 5 brothers, 3 older, 2 younger. they were fishermen and they had a sashimi restaurant by the beach. so naturally dosoo was expected to work there after she graduated high school

her family is the typical asian family who thinks sons can do no wrong and puts daughters on a higher pedestal; dosoo was very self-sufficient because she was expected to do all the work in the house when her mother wasn't around (while her brothers were lazing around after work)(bad). no one ever asked her what she wanted out of life

she wasn't born a genius; she was fairly average in school but she was very very very dedicated to her studies (who trades sleep for a study session kind of student). she's also very critical of herself but she hates it when other people criticize her (bad)

her relationship with her family made her not want to get married but she still did nevertheless (it was an arranged marriage). her husband, jungha, is very chill about her and the whole relationship was business-like more than anything. they b chilling 2 meters apart, watching the news and reading books, sometimes bitching about their colleagues

dosoo is not a fan of teamwork and prefers to be left alone but her marriage taught her that not everything can be done alone (and that its okay to ask for help!)(she's still feeling very conflicted about that but with the apocalypse going, she's learning to cope)

not a fighter, more of a runner. she ran marathons and it all pays off! very sloppy with weapons, it's a surprise she didn't take her eyes out or something. fairly good with knives because of her years serving sashimi in her family restaurant but she doesn't have the stomach for violence (violent thoughts are where she draws the line)

she brings her journal everywhere like a holy book. it's like a diary for her, where she writes her daily routine and what she encounters on the road especially about the infected. she's very observant when she's not getting chased by the infected (which is why she prefers to sneak around so she can take notes of everything that's going on around her)

loves animals but does not have the commitment to keep a pet. dosoo would wave at stray cats but shrink away from them because she doesn't want the cat to get attached to her. she really doesn't have the energy to take care of another being.

wanted connections:

dosoo is not a fighter and therefore susceptible to attacks by the infected or other aggressive civilians. please teach her fight! (she's not good at it)(there will be frustrated screaming)

you catch her snooping around trying to figure out what the hell is up with the fireflies. dosoo is curious about a lot of things (the wrong things). more fighting? or just talking ensues?

probably with one of the gen zs? dosoo used to teach and host lectures so maybe you've seen her before. she's not very enthusiastic when meeting people but she'll talk your ear off about her research

something in the team reminds dosoo of her husband and you, a kind soul, offer to listen to dosoo loudly denying that she misses her husband while being all melancholic

i'm always up for a discussion! i'm down for anything angsty comedic thriller any genre to ever exist please don't hesitate to pitch your idea to me

Actual fic deadlines/priorities

Now till September 2 - My three hermitshipping bang fics are due, in a complete "can post if you got hit by a bus" version. Last possible extensions till September 8. I don't know if I'll get all three done. If I don't, I can't predict whether I'll put it down for awhile or try to get through it. If I want to wait to post, I can still possibly get the "doodle tier" of art and can add it to the collection, which is just so chill and cool of them, everything is chill and cool

September 3-18 - The burning man fics, god, I really want to post them during my (partial) top surgery and recovery. The current plan is to post chapter of three stories a day, that line up with time periods. (Like the first posting day covers approximately noon-2pm, etc). The current plan is for the final story to be posted on the final day. This means for anyone who pops in at the beginning, they can have three kinds of cliffhangers! I personally think it's super cool

September 19-late September - Recovering from surgery! If anyone has any tips, please let me know! I'm very excited! And I've had a "6 days inpatient three months recovery" surgery, so it's really about the detail of a different surgery recovery.

Late september-deceber: God, first my wips, my poor beautiful wips, along with the larper au (which might top out at three fics, we'll see... and immediately on writing that i got possessed with a flower husbands idea, very well! NO PROMISES). I'll also be editing my hermitshipping bang fics, which are allowed to be totally expanded on, including adding B plots, so... I might go off the rails there.

Onwards: If life goes to plan, sometime in 2024, probably late spring or later, I will have WAY less free time, and while I am very excited about the reason, it might stop fic entirely for awhile. @that-tall-queer-bassist has offered to help me (including up to cleaning up my speech to text into something like real notes or maybe prose). Part of why I push so hard to write is because my time having this much time is limited.

Crucial note about how I write: Sometimes what I need to work on fic is to go work on a different fic, and sometimes even publish it. I had a huge drought after limited life when i told myself I couldn't publish anything else, until i let myself do Driving After Dark and, well, I've published about 44k in 2.5 months. Sometimes I get stuck and all I can do is take a break. I now refuse to push myself hard enough on a fic that I burn out.

I genuinely have 20 wips that I want to publish. I acknowledge this is unlikely but they are all my weird little children. Things may appear in wip wednesday and never make it.

What does that note mean for you: Do not EVER pressure me to finish a fic. You may ALWAYS express enthusiasm for specific fic, and it may get it higher up the queue. Asking about timing is tricky. "i was wondering if you know when you might be publishing this one" - in practice has not upset me. "(affectionately) what happened to posting the next chapter in november?" - ruined my fucking day. Had to stop myself from a mean spirited essay about all the reasons it hadn't happened. I can not tell you how to ask this correctly. You now have this schedule here, and you can ask about how it's going (perhaps in an ask) if it's in a chill manner! I'll totally answer, including if any of the bang fics have been officially dropped from the bang (and thus i can tell you my neat ideas! all i'll say is there's some very me things and at least on surprise that might keep people from guessing it's me!)

Persuasion Dream Cast yes i know no one is thinking about this anymore

I love this book too much, and have read it too many times. I have been trying not to think about this out of anger but inspiration bows to no one. If no one else gets this, fine, but that doesn’t make it less correct

Sarah Snook and Joel Fry as Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth.

Are you fucking kidding me they would have been perfect. The loss of what might have been is even more painful if I had never known it was a possibility, and I wouldn’t have beacause I wouldn’t have pieced this together originally. I wouldn’t have thought of Sarah Snook as Anne Elliot until I became not stupid (watched the season 3 finale of Succession) and realized no one else could play the hold your emotions in until you combust game like her. I have also fallen in love with Joel Fry to the point that I am considering watching Cruella. Having a comedic actor play Wentworth is galaxy brain, because the tragedy of his love life can only be countered by how ridiculous it is. Also he could perfectly pull off writing a letter to someone who’s in the room, then leaving it conspicuously on a table, then coming back and handing it directly to her just to be safe.

Richard E Grant as Walter Elliot.

I am sick in my stomach to think that the only way I can hear Richard E Grant say Sir Walter’s lines is by also sitting through Dakota Johnson Fleabagging the camera like she’s making one of those annoying ass TikToks. I used to be ok with Dakota Johnson now her voice just makes me wanna punch that gap back in her teeth. Meanwhile Richard E. Grant could shit talk men’s haircuts and recommend a better beauty product to his daughters for two straight hours and it would still be funny

Danusia Samal as Elizabeth Elliot

She’s perfect and highhandedly bitchy as Countess Svenska in The Great, and that’s also how I know she can bring the right Hot Entitlement to the role.

PATTI HARRISON AS MARY MUSGROVE.

You are a fool and a coward if you think Mary shouldn’t be played by the funniest comedian in the movie. No one else could make Mary’s histrionics over her toddler breaking his arm funnier than Patti Harrison, and now I can only dream about it.

Lolly Adefope as Louisa Musgrove.

1. She’s a genius. 2. Imagine Kitty from Ghosts going “Catch me! Catch me!” before jumping and plummeting to concrete and tell me I’m not correct. She could also play post-accident Louisa deeply, but still funny, and that’s hard to pull off.

Susan Wokoma as Henrietta Musgrove.

Very excited to watch Year of the Rabbit, and I watched Chewing Gum so I know she can play the practical sister while also trying to flirt with Wentworth in the worst ways possible.

Zach Cherry as Charles Musgrove

He has perfect “this guy just wants to chill but life has made that impossible” energy. Also can picture him in a “I love my wife- and yes she bought me this shirt” t shirt.

Rachel House as Mrs. Croft

I want to be Mrs. Croft’s best friend and she was written 200 years ago, the casting of Fiona Shaw was genius and any actress playing her needs to convey that you can trust her with your life. She is the coolest MILF alive and there is no other choice.

Jake Lacy as Mr. Eliot.

I hate this bitch now thanks to White Lotus and I need him to bring that energy here now. He wants you to trust him so bad and it’s a sick thrill that we and Anne share getting nasty gossip about him because it confirms something you already felt.

Sophie Okenedo as Lady Russell. 

You should trust and like Lady Russell, but she should also be able to infuriate you like only your mother can when you’re visiting her at home and she asks a innocuous question that makes you want to eat glass.

Jamie Demetriou as Benwick.

Benwick seems absolutely heartbroken by the death of his fiancee until he can read poetry to a pretty girl for a few weeks, and Demetriou can play that soggy sadness and desperation to be loved just *chefs kiss* Also I want to see his face when Sarah Snook tells him he should read less poetry and more prose for the sake of his health.

Adeel Akhtar as Admiral Croft.

I just want Adeel Akhtar to be in everything. Cool uncle energy.

Honorable mention I think a truly great actress should play Mrs. Smith so that you’re totally absorbed in her story like you are in the book. Fiona O’Shaughnessy. #UtopiaHive
