Crimson Rivers Lily
Tumblr media
„She's so beautiful. Truly, truly gorgeous. Emerald eyes and flushed cheeks, thick-thighed and wide hips, broad shoulders with a tattoo of a flower in between the blades—a pink petunia, specifically. Dorcas asked why once, but Lily didn't answer, and Dorcas only had to ask one time to know never to ask again.“

in lieu of a moon cake
aug 29 - sept 11, 2022
where have the ilcb posts been the last four weeks, i hear you cry? well genuinely, the end of summer took me and i wandered out of time and thought. did watch the moon rise rich and golden last night, though, so--on balance--we're doing just fine.
reading finished my ancillary justice re-read this morning and i got so much more out of it the second time, newly attuned to the little differences between this and all the other space opera i've been enjoying. also finished obernewtyn (isobel carmodie), one of the growing list of YA sci/fantasy i'm catching up on using libby. spent a lot of last week reading or what you will, jo walton, which i think i will have more to say about when i finish it, and listening to ann leckie's the raven tower as an audiobook on various commutes-- perhaps not the best medium for it, but the reader's absolutely eating the accent work which does liven things up. i also acquired a romance novel from @dimir-charmer which is Certainly Something, not quite up to the level of some of the classics @pandolfo-malatesta would review but which has made me say out loud 'stop using that word, i do not think it means what you think it means!' every time this poor author tries to call someone 'contemporaries.'
listening so i know we all remember (for better or worse) passenger's 'let her go' from 2013 or whenever, but i have very specific tender feelings and memories attached to that whole album. a recent re-listen, followed by a tour through his recent, extensive new discography (like five albums since i last checked, holy shit), has shown me that i'm not even remotely capable of being objective, but i do think? that none of the new stuff has grabbed me? like it all sounds consistent, it all sounds, uh, the same, and the nuances and things i can pick out in the tracks from all the little lights (2012) or hell even whisper (2014) are just...not discernible (is this just a question of production)(possibly). to quote one of the new songs, uh, it leaves me cold? whereas 'feather on clyde' is still revealing and teaching me new things to get teary-eyed about (this time it was the line 'well god knows that i've failed, but he knows that i've tried'), and just...plus the string duet at the opening of 'things that stop you dreaming,' the way it builds up so, so sweetly, the lyrics taking you by surprise by leaving no breaks or breaths until the chorus, playing with pace and rhythm--still not tired of it.
youtube
watching i spent most of last week cycling between 'sandman', 'doulou continent', and 'oath of love', with a brief detour to the mdzs donghua with @hematiterings as per us-- sandman is good, though i haven't finished it. i got to the death episode and did briefly cry actual human tears about the old violinist and the young honeymooners, only to have the rest of the episode with its chronological humor (reminding me of ep 3 of 'good omens', what with the 'let's put our cast in several different centuries and enjoy what that does to their hair', thank you neilman) give me slight emotional whiplash. the problem with my cdrama habit is that, especially with duolou continent, i've had a hard time believing i've seen as many episodes as i actually have (also viki is...incapable of keeping my place) so i tend to back up to whichever episode number sort of feels right? which means i've seen episodes 11-15 like three times each. at least now i'm getting people's names.
playing finished up summer and fall of year two in stardew, won the grange fair and the ice fishing contest now that it's winter, and just bought a duck! (her name is fern)
making i think the garden is fading, we're still harvesting tomatoes but a lot of the leaves have turned yellow and crinkly, meanwhile the squash (?) vines have all withered except for one, perplexingly round little green squash (?) with a few nibbles out of it courtesy of the neighborhood fauna. when do i pluck it? is it still...getting anything out of being on its vine?
working on *cue panicked laughter* chapter 1! also that presentation / conference paper based on chapter-1-or-possibly-the-old-book-practicum! also that presentation based on chapter-2-or-possibly-chapters-1-and-2-OR-possibly-the-diss-proposal! with all the complaining i've done to various friends and colleagues, its no wonder there's not been any. further writing. distracting myself by insisting on doing things for the incoming students, which has been very fun and diverting since they are cute and much easier to help.

in lieu of a break
10pm, sept 25, 2022
the title is a lie, today and yesterday have both been breaks in their own ways! but the days do start coming and they really don't stop coming, do they. kay @girlfriendsofthegalaxy did a really nice couple of posts not long ago explaining the Theory of her tuesdayposts, to which i have only to add that-- i think for me these are turning into a steam valve, where i let out whatever is happening in my head that has built up over the past little while; they are analytical or creative endeavors in their own way, sometimes, but i mainly write them for myself and my own recall (so that i can go back and check out what i wrote about first watching the untamed, for example, please see iclb 2 or 3 from way back), and to keep track of my days. which is going to mean they aren't Reviews or really Criticism, though i may dabble in both, and any enjoyment or enlightenment anyone else gets out of reading these is incidental. for this one, it's a real head empty no thoughts list of titles, so hold on to your butts let's go.
reading the big mention here is that i just finished susanna clarke's piranesi, which i didn't know how to feel about until like 30% of the way in, and then began to enjoy quite a bit as the whole conceit became clearer, and then found...melancholy but beautiful by the end. honorable mentions over the past mumblemumble weeks to (checks storygraph): squire by tamora pierce (reread), ancillary justice by ann leckie (also a reread); the raven tower (not a reread, also by ann leckie--though i still haven't finished it); and the duchess romance which i did finish mostly out of morbid curiosity.
Tumblr media
watching strangely this will be the largest section for once! the escapism has been strong lately-- and there have been many excellent movie and tv show friendship opportunities. in reverse order, i have now seen two episodes of the new netflix bee and puppycat and find it delightful if inscrutable; i have now seen two episodes of the second season of fate: a winx saga also on netflix which i found less delightful, even more inscrutable (since i hadn't seen the first season or the previous show, lmao) but extremely funny to watch alongside more deeply invested jammies; i have now seen the first three episodes of andor and found diego luna as charming as ever; i have now seen the prestige (2006) and it did lodge in my brain in the way only very rare movies do; i have now seen the newest three (?) episodes of star trek: lower decks and did think the most recent one with the recruiting booth and the rutherford memories plotline to be incredible star trek and some of the best lower deck stuff yet; i did make my housemates watch a double-feature of the princess diaries (2001) and the princess diaries 2: royal engagement (2004), which were extremely fun and also wild opportunities for early- oughts media criticism and an in-depth examination of the portrayal of hereditary monarchy (and on the heels of qe 2's death, no less);

In lieu of a commonplace book: summer nights
begun 9pm, monday, july 25, 2022 continued 11pm, monday, august 1
this post is like a week overdue, and has been tricky to write because i've had such high hopes for it. because this post? full of things that sparked joy. so i want to do them justice! finally finished a bunch of books, finally started listening to some new music which has been so good for my mood; it's felt like (last week and this weekend in particular) there's been novelty and enrichment in my enclosure. wrote my way into something i think i can now be happy with, at least; it's long, but it's true, and i can be grateful for the small victories.
reading i want to commemorate the fact that, somehow, i ended up finishing hilary mantel's the mirror and the light on the exact day, july 28, that it ends-- *spoilers* the anniversary of cromwell's death *spoilers*-- which given that i probably started reading it like 18 months ago at this point, feels absolutely fated. also if you're laughing at the fact that i felt the need to spoiler that, just know that i didn't know he died at the end. also, didn't know his involvement in the anne of cleves marriage! also didn't quite know political the kathryn howard marriage was-- but of course it must have been, had to have been. the last, oh, maybe 100 pages of this book, where it all starts to unravel, were the most engaging of the whole thing. i think the goal for the book, the intended tone, was this slowly mounting sense of melancholy, or of fatigue, of things falling apart, but it didn't translate to suspense or tension or uhhh pathos for me, except for maybe a few brief chunks in the last five pages that were then overwritten by how...tacky the last few lines were? i wish i could say that my feelings upon finishing this book were more than just, well thank goodness that's over. i think this one was a victim of its predecessors' success, in the sense that-- it took what i liked or what worked from the first two, and overdid it.
Tumblr media
in contrast, and what an interesting world it is that i ended up getting to read these two in conversation, my loan for victoria goddard's the hands of the emperor came in on july 18 and, despite being actually longer than mirror and the light i have already finished it, and in fact started it over again from the beginning immediately. it...stunned me a little to think about the broad similarities between these two, but think about it: two main characters who are, essentially, self-made men who worked in and through governmental policies to change the world on behalf of a monarch ruling with the force of state and church and tradition, whose succession is a Big Issue and whose temperament, for better or worse, makes all the difference. i wouldn't say that's necessarily what hote is actually *about*, but putting it out like that was a fun thought-experiment.

in lieu of a commonplace book has fans??
8 pm, july 11, 2022
wow y'all . in the last week i've been tagged in three (three? 3!!) other weekly roundup post from... loyal readers, what the fuck. friends!! first, i love that this series has been entertaining for literally anyone apart from its intended audience (i.e. future me). indescribable feeling. second, feeling flattered but dismayed by the folks who say they have never liked or commented on an ilcb post, but have apparently been reading them this whole time. wild. i had...no idea. you are all hereby empowered to engage, if you'd like (which i'd like!), and i'll do the same on yours! i love this for you guys. please revel in all the things you like and the delights that are you.
now, this post is delayed (again), because as much as i like to have them published on weekends, weekends are also where i tend to get the material i talk about. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ read on for some discussion of stranger things s4 episodes 1-5, and an extremely goofy medieval-renaissance video game. mild spoilers for the lloyd alexander novel the black cauldron.
reading i finished lloyd alexander's the black cauldron after having lingered on the last 3 pages for like....multiple weeks. (i thought there was more to go, but it turned out the last few pages were a preview of the last book.) i know a lot of people in welsh / celtic studies have nostalgia for these books but at the same time may or may not actually like them, because of the way they play with characters or lore from the Four Branches. personally i'm kind of into it? i didn't read them as a kid, so i don't have nostalgia per se-- i'm into the fact that i can recognize things, tone or theme as much as substance, and that i can imagine reading this aloud and enjoying the pronunciations and inspiring whatever children might be listening. also, the change from the first book to this one, and the changes made between this book and the movie, made me really enjoy this book. i liked adaon, and i was okay with the presence of ellidyr (he's very consistent with the spirit of efnysien, if not the reality, which could also be said about most of the book). i was...almost ecstatic about the way it wasn't gurgi, in the end, it just made so much more sense this way. this falls into the same category of reading YA fantasy i missed as a kid, initiated by the dianna wynne jones books and alison croggon's books of pellinor last year, and contrasts interestingly with the tamora pierce reread i've been doing.
Tumblr media
listening a weird mashup of the a short hike soundtrack and the reddit manwhore playlist , because work and focus has continued to be. weird and challenging. the video game 'energizing but also focus' music is usually helpful but i nearly dozed off at my desk yesterday. still, i like that i've discovered a new game ost (owlboy) which is a lot of fun. do i know anything about the game? no! i'll have to investigate it.
watching episodes 1-5 of stranger things season 4. i'm not...having as much fun with this season as i remember having with season 3? it's something about how spread out and disconnected the cast are (they split the party ☹️) and partly also, that... as the kids have grown up, the differences in acting skill level have become more obvious. i just...have so much more fun watching joe keery and sadie sink and millie bobbie brown do their things, than i do the rest of them? the fact that david harbour basically doesn't get to speak for these whole first five episodes (plus the fact that his whole story line is just not that interesting?) feels like such a waste. a lot of what they give joyce and robin to say also feel like a waste? murray is fun but like...he's light comic relief now. what happened. the first episode of this season felt like it had a coherent vision with the dnd / hellfire stuff, but it's diffused a lot at this point. though i do giggle like a maniac when they so earnestly name-drop vecna-- having listened to crit role campaign one, i go 'oh hey i know him!' every time. i guess the thing for me is, i've always come to this show for the way it imitates and references horror/80s thrillers/etc, for the loving callbacks, more than these things themselves. i don't want or need it to be like. actually these things. and the more it tries to be, the less fun i have?

Dude I was on the language learning forms as I do sometimes, and someone was lamenting the lack of Chinese content to immerse in (watch, read etc). And how it was hard to find and they didn’t have this problem with Japanese what should they do?
Well. 1. I get their frustration on one level, as I do think Japanese content is so much more mainstream to watch in English speaking countries (at least anime and Japanese video games), that trying to find content in a language where it’s harder to just find content right on Netflix or from a friends recommendation does bring up a new challenge. Whereas with Japanese, probably you could accidentally stumble onto it or have a friend recommend you something, then at least explore deeper with some idea of what you liked/where to start finding it.
However. The person also sort of thought the lack of content was due to Chinese just not having as much content or as interesting content. Again I’m going to assume their key issue was just - it can be a new challenge finding media if you have a harder time just starting.
Because lol?? Chinese has SO much content. Like as far as language content on the internet alone??? Chinese has been eons easier to find than Japanese for me, and in terms of sites I actually use regularly is much closer to my experience of English online (there’s so much Chinese content online... so much... an incredible amount... like in chinese I’ve even found free movie watching sites FOR shows in English - like the way I find sites in English to watch Chinese shows IN chinese lol! Like you can use English to search for Chinese stuff, and literally do the reverse to find English stuff, there is so much Chinese stuff... I found more stuff in Japanese using bilibili in chinese than I could find of Japanese using YouTube In English). And Chinese drama land is HUGE it feels as active as American television, so you have endless genres to dive into and companies and actors and writers etc (there is a distinct lack of sci fi though as far as I’ve seen, but to be fair america isn’t making a Ton of sci fi compared to like Detective shows either - it’s just English speaking sci fi has had some more good ones in recent years). There is no lack of Chinese content out there. There’s audiobooks, dramas, audio dramas, talk shows, radio, fanfiction, novels, fanart, manhua, sites to find other stuff, forums, weibo, search sites, just a lot?? Like, if you think Japanese has enough internet content then there is an adequate amount of Chinese content on the internet too lol. You just may have to do a touch more initial exploration.
I just. Thought the assumption “can’t find media means their media sucks” was funny. Because also? I have not found that to be true. I know very little about Thai media. I just happened upon SOTUS cause of a friend talking about it. So like someone watching anime conveniently - I got into it. It was good, so I dug, and found a lot of amazing Thai shows (and some I didn’t love cause lol genres all have a mix of quality depending on show etc). There IS a ton of amazing Thai shows that exist right now. But if all you ever found was SOTUS? While it was great when I saw it to me, once I found more I realized there was a LOT better stuff. So like if you see one cdrama on Netflix (if that’s how you first easily find the media), that does not mean all shows will be that quality or anything like them! And just cause it’s the first one you found doesn’t mean they’re all like that ones quality.
Like I had a similar experience with jdramas growing up, so I get it. I was into anime, saw some (trainwreck) live action adaptations. And as a teenage just blanket assumed all Japanese live action media was gonna be around that quality. And then in recent years, I checked out some Japanese live action media - to see if new stuff was better. YEAH IT SURE IS (and I would imagine some old stuff was great I just gave up after one not-wonderful one lol). SO MANY AMAZING jdramas exist now! Even the ones I most feared would not be great - live action adaptations of anime’s? They’re so much better now, some of them are genuinely loved in their own right as standalone live actions. So like. One not-great show experience is NOT representative of the entire plethora of shows available and their quality. Now that I’ve realized how MANY good jdramas I missed out on? I have so much catching up to do ToT
2. If you’re in this boat of “content seems hard to find, so I feel like there’s none or no good stuff” what to do?
First ask some friends for recommendations?
Check Netflix, Amazon, YouTube (YouTube has a ton of cdramas), Viki, iQiyi app. Like how some people get into anime, maybe you just need an easy conviennent show in your recommended to get into more content.
Check out rec channels on YouTube like Donghua Reviews and Avenue X to hear about some shows and figure out the kinds of ones you’d even want to check out (I imagine other languages also have review channels like for kdramas).
Go to MyDramaList.com. Search genres you like, read recommendation list posts. if you’ve seen a show at this point already you can look it up and see in the “Recommended” section what other dramas are like it, you can see it’s genre tags to see WHAT genres you even seem to like. Use this to start DIGGING and finding stuff you might really like. Since like with anime, you’re only going to find the most popular stuff at first just based on Netflix or friends (which might not match up to your personal tastes as well as finding stuff that Is more your favorite genres).
Try out new stuff. And if it sucks, you don’t like it? Drop it, learn that about yourself, start another new thing. You’ll figure out what you like and dislike pretty fast (like I personally hate bad pacing or bad writing specifically characterization, and I can notice when the specific things I love are gonna be in a show pretty fast).
Check out genres specific to that language’s media. Because if it’s new to you, you might not know if you even like it or not, and if you like it then which things you personally prefer in it (since even within a genre there will be wildly different content and feels). For Chinese this might be wuxia, xianxia, palace dramas, costume dramas, republican era dramas, tomb raiding dramas etc.
*That’s how it worked for me, SOTUS led me to the bl drama fans, eventually they recommended Guardian so bam I guess I was learning chinese, YouTube recced me more cdramas from there to continue with, and mydramalist.com helped me find other shows with actors I liked from guardian (and other bl related shows which led me to Go Princess Go of all things for the bi lead), and that site helped me find more genres and shows I’d like, as well as friends continuing to rec things. Didn’t take long to figure out what I liked, didn’t, and to start noticing what upcoming stuff I’d probably be excited for. And now there’s so much good stuff found I don’t have enough time lol.
As for non show media: use shows as the jump off point. Just like using “easy to find shows” can be used to break into finding more shows. Once you have a show you liked a lot - look up it it’s based on a book, if it has an audiobook, an audio drama, a manhua, a donghua. Chances are it DOES have some of this stuff, because cdramas do a PRETTY regular amount of the time. Often cdramas have all or nearly all of these other story types. So jump into those, then find more novels or audio drama or manhua etc by branching off from the one you liked to others like it. Novelupdates.com is good for doing this with novels (it has a recommendations section), I imagine manhua sites have rec lists too, ximalaya starts recommending stuff once you’ve listened to a few audio on it, etc. And if you get into fandoms of those x media types, those fans will start recommending more too. And again, even if you just stick to media related to shows you liked - so often shows have so MUCH related media that would definitely keep you busy. (Like I didnt wade into non-show connected novels until I looked up more novels as recommendations afte show-related novels, like MDZS and Guardian leading me to SVSSS and 2ha and Can Ci Pin which at the time had no show adaptations, and then eventually found just-novel rec lists - which is still the main way I find fanfic).

Movies watched in 2021: Shang-Chi
Tumblr media
This movie was fucking awesome! I loved everything about it, even the third act that seems to be a bit... controversial? IDK, I thought it was great!
Shaun (Simu Liu) and his best friend Katy (Awkwafina) lead an unambitious life, working for a hotel and having fun at karaoke bars at night. That is, until Shaun's past catches up to him and several bad guys attack him during a bus ride. They work for his father, Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung), leader of the Ten Rings, a group of highly skilled assassins. Shaun had left this life behind, but when his sister Xianling (Meng'er Zhang) is threatened, he has to stop hiding away in America and has to face his past.

So, as I’ve mentioned somewhere around here I’ve started watching „Legend of Fei“. After that it’ll be „Douluo Continent“, but for now LoF seems like the easier option since it’s basically complete on Viki. (And yes I got a Viki pass for this because YouTube also had obnoxious ads and that just won’t do.)
Anyway, so far I’m really enjoying it! Zhou Fei is entertaining and I still don’t know how old she’s supposed to be, but I assume it’s something between 16 and 20. I like her even though she’s a bit stand-offish and tends to be mean to Xie Yun, who is a fucking delight, okay. But I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, since she’s likely a teenager who has no fucking clue how to react to someone flirting with her and obviously grew up suuuuper sheltered.
Like, so sheltered that she does not get the implications of wearing Xie Yun’s gift around her neck. She has this cute conversation with Wu ChuChu, who is the sweetest girl seriously, and during it she decides to make a necklace out of that gift. Chuchu’s like, „Hey what’s that?“ and A-Fei is like, „Someone gave it to me.“ (obviously not meaning her parents), and Chuchu’s eyes go big and she’s like, „Uhm you do know what it means when you wear such a gift?“ And A-Fei just looks confused and has no fucking clue. So Chuchu’s just goes internally, „OMG she doesn’t know! Do I tell her? Nahhh, she’ll get there on her own.“ XD
Xie Yun constantly makes heart eyes at Zhou Fei and is just awesome and super likable in general. He’s the kind of guy who’ll sit around in a prison (for six months I guess!) because a) he’s curious what’s going on there, b) he was with Wu ChuChu and her little brother at the time and knows some evil guys are after them, and c) he just doesn’t have anything better to do and the food isn’t that bad.
And I don’t know which of those reasons was the most important one. XD
I think he’s already decided that Zhou Fei will be his wife because she’s awesome and he likes awesome and pretty women. I enjoy their dynamic, because it’s for once the cliché of „mean unapproachable guy has that one woman fawn over him because she sees the good in him“ but turned around and with much more likeable characters.
I don’t know anything about the plot. I know some bits about characters but that’s it. So this is really… quite something.
Like, I guess there’s a war… coming? Or already happening somewhere? There definitely was a war in the past. And the evil guys of Disha are after some kind of McGuffins I guess. Which is why they try to catch Wu Chuchu and her brother.
Then there’s another possible evil, definitely weird guy all in red, who has some feud with the Disha guys.
But really, the villains from Disha are… all over the place. Their leader Shen .. *looks the name up* Tianshu has a lot of gravitas and always talks very quietly, like, okay, I don’t understand what you’re saying anyway but could you please speak up? And his subordinate - or younger brother? - or just the master under him, I’m not really sure, anyway, that guy is so OTT in everything he does. Every movement, every expression, the way he speaks screams EVIL VILLAIN WHO IS EVIL, right from 60s Batman I guess. XD He also has an eyepatch.
I think Disha seems to be a lot of… infighting? Like, several of the masters have ambitions to be the leader but for now it’s the oldest guy? But then he had a staring contest with one of the masters, and I was like, WTF are you doing? Why are you narrowing your eyes at each other? In close up? That went on really long, so I guess the younger one was kinda challenging Shen Tianshu? I guess we’ll see about all that later.
I love Zhou Fei’s parents, especially her mother. She’s the same type of character like Yu Ziyuan in „The Untamed“, BTW, so if you want to get a better read on this kind of character I think this show is really good. Because there’s a lot of tough love going on there, the mother is reserved and not exactly overflowing with compliments and praise. But there are also scenes where you see that she loves her daughter and is proud of her.
I’ve only seen 6 eps so far, I’ve got no idea where this is going (well okay, the credits tell me there will be some big fight against Disha and Zhou Fei/Xie Yun is endgame but other than that?). What’ll happen with Zhou Fei’s cousin who kinda feels underappreciated, what are those McGuffins etc. There are also several older characters around who seem to belong to other sects but it seems that these sects are in decline.
I also love the end credits song. ♥

I was inspired by @pumpkinpaix‘s wonderful idea of posting about “joyful objects” - objects that make you happy, no matter if old or new, if expensive or not. :D
This is a keychain with tail hair of our two horses. I commissioned it from a lovely jewellery maker that specialises in making necklaces, rings, bracelets etc. with horse tail hair as a special memento to perhaps remember a beloved animal after its death, or just as a pretty token of a horse that’s still alive.
My mother and I used to have two horses. My mare died four years ago; she’d had a long history of illness and actually was doing much better until a sudden severe colic ended her life. She was 24 and I’d had her for almost 18 years. We had some troubled times as she wasn’t the easiest of horses. I guess you could say she had character. XD But I loved her nonetheless. It was difficult letting her go, even though I’d had to come to terms with it much earlier because of her illness. It was expected that she wouldn’t live that many years longer, but the colic was sudden.
My mother’s gelding died last December. He was almost 31 years old, so a very old age for a warmblood, and with us for twenty years. He was still doing pretty all right for his age, too, and the day before his death he’d rolled around in the grass happily. But the next day he couldn’t get up anymore and even meds didn’t get him on his feet again. Considering that we’ve had a very wet and uncomfortable winter and also a rainy, weird summer, I’m kind of glad that he didn’t have to suffer through that weather anymore. He went after a surprisingly warm and sunny December day, where he’d been fussed over and gotten the last of the good grass.
They both are running free on the eternal pasture now and I’m sure they’re very happy there.
I commissioned several pieces with their tail hair, but the keychain is the first that combines both of them. It hangs from my rearview mirror in my car, so I see it pretty much every day. I plan on getting more jewellery with both of them, but for now this has to do. I just love how it turned out and it’s a beautiful reminder of them. ♥

Movies watched in 2021: Love and Monsters
Tumblr media
Look. I love Dylan O’Brien, so I was really looking forward to this movie. Of course, it also suffered from the closed cinemas last year but is now showing on Netflix (Germany, I guess some other countries had an earlier release).
The world went to hell. Because humanity nuked an asteroid that would’ve have destroyed Earth, the nuclear waste caused a mutation in cold-blooded animals. The result was huge mutated monster insects, amphibians, spiders etc. and many, many dead people. Joel (Dylan O’Brien) survived one of the worst outbreaks and has been living in an underground colony with several other survivors for seven years now. His parents died and his girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick) got separated from him in the chaos.
Joel is a bit of a sadsack, because he still pines for Aimee and their lost love after all these years and also is a bad fighter that doesn’t contribute much to his colony except for cooking and taking care of radiocommunication. In this manner he finds Aimee again - she’s in a colony 140 km west from him. And in a crazy bout of spontaneousness Joel decides to go to her.
Ill equipped as he is he still braves the outside world for the first time in seven years, just to finally reunite with the woman he loves. On his journey he meets a dog, two other survivors (Michael Rooker and Ariana Greenblatt), and lots and lots of monsters.

Fic: Hanguang-Jun’s Flawless Taste In Men (by Elhana)
Read on AO3. Fandom: The Untamed Chapters: 1/1 Words: ~ 6500 Rating: Teen Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji Characters: Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, Juniors ensemble, OMC Additional Tags: canon compliant, outsider PoV on WangXian, reunions, occasional attemptd at humour, don’t worry about the OMC I just didn’t feel confident writing from LSZ’s or LJY’s PoV, so you’re getting a radnom Lan disciple instead, The Juniors are sugarcoating everything, their beloved Hanguang-Jun falls for a random demonic cultivator twink, they really have a lot to deal with here
Summary: The juniors worshipped the ground Hanguang-Jun walked on. He was perfect, his judgement flawless. So why did he make heart eyes at that crazy demonic cultivator they met on a night hunt? A man who was constantly whining, pouting, arguing with his donkey, standing much too close to Hanguang-Jun, permanently touching him, even daring to call him by his birth name?!
Based on this tumblr post by @neverdoingmuch. I took inspiration from it and it turned into this. I don’t know.
Thanks a lot to @gusulansectrules for their great beta work!
This is also my contribution for @mdzsnet’s Lan Wangji Birthday event! I hope you enjoy! ♥

For my very first wolfstar fanart I decided to draw Sirius bringing Remus his favorite coffee, even if they've only known each other for a day
