ouattober2023 Day 7: Fav Side Chara

Mulan (ﾉ´ヮ´)ﾉ*:･ﾟ✧

I think Once Upon A Time has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to great characters everywhere. I may not be a fan of a lot of the way romances got handled, and I have opinions about the untapped potential left and right, but the characters we got to witness are pretty amazing. That's why even when I didn't care about the larger plot, I always had fun with this show. So many cool characters. But making me pick one who left an impact on me with not much screentime (well, at least I have 12 eps) and had me screaming for more - it's Mulan. Of course she does have the advantage of having one of the best animated Disney Princess movies.

Although that's a funny thing here. Where known fairytales got a little twist here and there, Mulan's backstory isn't really touched upon. She wears her armor, is a well-trained soldier/warrior and now travels a lot. It's like "we know you know the movie, let's get on". The one re-occuring thing we get is this fabulous moment when she takes off her helmet and people go "omg you're a girl" and she gets to correct them "woman". A+ Being viewed as a dude and if not getting underestimated is her thing.

An outstanding moment I love about Mulan? In 2x06 Tallahassee Emma tells her to cut down the beanstalk should she not be back within ten hours and also to do everything to get Snow back home to Storybrooke. It's the classic situation doing something dangerous while the clock is ticking. And usually a hero will be like "five more minutes", everything is very close. But we need moments of real tension to undercut the usual. And Mulan is so perfect for this. Because she will honor this agreement to the letter. She is one to ask to follow difficult orders. Snow actually does tackle her to the ground and yes, Emma arrives a few minutes late, then all is fine. But this is the cornerstone of Mulan as a character - give her a task, she will do it, with everything she has. It could even be something detriment to her own happiness or well-being. A character trait that can be a strength and a flaw at the same time. The range! We could have seen this later on if Mulan had stayed. She could have been a person to side with "the reasonable option" against the group of hope-loving heroes even.

That doesn't mean Mulan is uncaring. We got to witness how she fell in love with Aurora, we know she has a soft side. Sure, she protected Aurora, because she promised Philip to take care of her, but that situation became very personal. And omg that scene when Mulan gives Aurora her heart back... has any heart been placed back with such care? Such a sensual scene!

It's soul-crushing they kinda did this to Mulan twice. Robbing her of finding love, watching on as somebody under a Sleeping Curse gets True Love's Kiss, never experiencing that magic herself. But apart from that, when she gets her heart crushed (only figuratevily) in 3x03 Quite a Common Fairy and announces she'd join Robin Hood's band - I did hope she would. She could have been an excellent addition. Especially since the Merry Men could have used more to do (just like the dwarves). That would have been such a fun mix and overall a great way to eventually get Mulan to Storybrooke. That ep did make it clear that Robin would have a bigger role, attaching Mulan to him seemed logical.

I also like that Mulan's first instinct is to not trust people. She sees Neal, she recognized the style of clothing and she is suspicious (great contrast to Aurora's reaction). But Neal wins her over and boom, once Mulan is in your side, you can relax. Such a good partner for whatever errand you have to run. Which is why it makes sense that when Ruby asks if Mulan wants to join her on a search for werewolves, Mulan says yes. (Not like she has anything better to do.) Mulan craves a purpose. Imagine somebody would have introduced her to colorful textmarkers and color-coded itineraries. Belle showed her how useful information out of a book can be, they could have solved more situations together.

Thoughts During TOH 3x03 Watching and Dreaming

Here we go. The finale. This is it.

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t record my reactions to the first half of this so some general thoughts before I continue.

So, seeing kind of King, Luz, and Eda’s worst fears be reaffirmed by the dreams was the worst, but we also got out of the actual dreams a lot quicker than I expected. It’s fine, I understand.

Raine needs to rest after all this.

We’re actually teaching the Collector about actual friendship and kindness and the permanence of death, huh.

The fact that Luz actually reassured the Collector that what they did wasn’t wrong when they tried to apply their lessons of forgiveness and kindness to Belos but it’s just the issue itself is so much more complicated than that. That kind of approach isn’t going to work on someone like Belos. I just really appreciate her letting them know that they didn’t do anything wrong.

And finally, before I continue, Luz’s “death” got me to cry. Especially when it showed Camilla crying even as a puppet like she knew! Ugh. Pain!

Okay, back to the live reacting.

“I should have thanked them.” AHHHHHHH! Pain!

TITAN DADDY!

Who voices him? It’s an interesting voice.

Okay so, two things. The voice acting for the Collector right now? Amazing. He sounds like such a scared kid. Love it. Second, Luz’s Titan Witch design? Gorgeous! 10/10.

OH MY GOD! My baby is casting spells with spell circles and Eda is supporting her and the animation got real smooth and I’m getting emotional again!

I haven’t mentioned it yet but this version of the theme is killing me! Oh my god!

The overview of the Titan! Like back in episode 2! A callback to the scene that made me realize I was going to love this show! How dare! Crying in the club a lot tonight!

You Didn’t Just Break Promises, You Broke Me Clarke & Lexa — The 100 (ep. 3x03)

After a short knock, Lexa re-entered Clarke's room with one of her dresses delicately draped over her arm - careful to avoid any wrinkling. She caught Clarke in front of the mirror, which in any other situation would have made her smile.

"Are you sure you want to do this for us?" she asked, her jaw tight with tension.

Clarke, about to finish her last braid, turned towards her. "I am," she answered, "But I'm not doing anything for you."

The emphasis on the last word wasn't hard to miss. This you was meant to be singular. This you was for her and for no one else.

Swallowing hard, Lexa avoided Clarke's stern glare. There were not many people who could make her feel small, but somehow Clarke didn't even have to try. With her eyes stuck on the floor, she mumbled, "I'm sorry."

"You said that already."

"Because it's true. If I'd known th—"

"—that you would ruin everything?" Clarke snapped, cutting her off before she could finish.

Lexa didn't reply. She did force herself to look back up and meet Clarke's gaze though, despite the way it made her feel. She'd hated those moments when Clarke had been angry with her, but right now she would give anything to see her like that again. Anything not to see her in pain, which was a thousand times worse.

"You know, you didn’t just break promises," Clarke went on, her voice more quiet now, almost calm, "you broke me."

She watched how Lexa let her reproach sink in, before abruptly spinning away from her, just like she'd done a season ago. Yet unlike last time, she didn't leave. She just moved to the big window at her left to take in the land far down beneath her - or so Clarke presumed, as she could now only see her back.

"I know," Lexa simply said.

Clarke looked at her. Not at the army commander, not at the blood-stained warrior that betrayed her, but at her—the girl underneath all that. The girl with whom she'd spent all those weeks. Who she had come to know and appreciate for who she really was. Who she had come to care about, and who cared about her too - or so she thought.

Not Heda. Lexa.

Lexa, who had managed to find her, to capture her - only to realize this wasn't Clarke. Not anymore. The traces of the past months were clear, written all over her. The once smooth skin now harmed and shattered by life and battle in the wilderness. The soft, pleading eyes that she'd stared into right before they'd parted now hardened, lying dark and deep in their sockets. Lexa had been visibly shocked by the dirt, the scrapes, the bruises; berating those who'd brought her in.

But Clarke wasn't talking about her time in the woods. If anything, those days of survival and solitude had only strengthened her. Nor was she referring to the reason she ended up there. How it had been the treachery at Mount Weather that had made her lose everything: starting with her innocence, then her home, her people, and—eventually—herself.

No, it hadn't been the action, the war they'd been in, that had given her the final blow. It had been the person. It had been the fact that Lexa, of all people, had broken her trust, and with it, a part of her. A real part.

Most likely her heart.

Because life had been chaos. From the moment she'd set foot on earth there had been conflict, danger, loss. Always, all the time, with not a minute to spare to even think about anything else. About anyone other than those who needed her. Let alone about herself; her own feelings, her own desires.

When Lexa had kissed her, it had awakened something in her. She knew that the moment their lips touched. But she also knew she needed time. Her mistake was believing she had some. Believing Lexa understood, cared enough to respect that… and would wait for her.

Clearly, she was wrong.

Lexa had literally turned her back at her. Deserted her. It had been a slap in the face for many reasons, but more than anything it had been the true realization what she'd meant to her.

Yet the worst part still had to come.

In the months after Clarke hadn't been alone. Lexa had been with her - all the freaking time. Whatever she'd tried, whichever distraction she'd sought, from fighting panthers to sleeping with Niylah, Lexa had never left her mind. And not just in the hating-her-guts-way, a feeling that she at least supported. No, the truly destroying part was the fact that she'd kept longing for her.

She had many reasons to be angry with Lexa, but the truth that she still had such a hold on her, after all she'd done, made her hate this girl even more. And with it, herself...

Clarke blinked, breaking her stare, then sighed deeply.

"I don't think you do."

Slowly, Lexa faced her again. To Clarke's surprise, she didn't fight her, didn't tell her wrong. She just nodded, in the most subtle way. It was nothing, really, yet when their eyes locked, they shared a look of careful understanding. One that seemed to say: we've taken ten steps back, but maybe, just maybe, this could be a small one forward?

Clearing her throat, it was Lexa who eventually broke their silence.

Holding up the dress, she said, "I think this should work," before swiftly leaving it on the bed on her sudden way out. "I'll be in the throne room, waiting for you."

@fratricidesam Starting this as a separate thread, not because I don't like your thread, but because the details of Biblical angels are tangential to your original point, and also I suck at long threads.

it's interesting that the writers didn't actually depict the Christian apocalypse. i understand taking some liberty, though. what you said about the Christ is interesting because - insane theory alert - in 3x03 Kubrick, a Christian hunter, says, "Sam Winchester is... the adversary," and in 3x07, gordon walker says, "Sam Winchester's the Antichrist," and i've wondered since then if that makes dean a type of Second Coming. it's dumb, i know, especially considering gordon didn't know about the angels or the apocalypse, but it lingers at the back of my mind.

First, regarding the appearance of Biblical angels: Angels appear in different forms in the Bible. They can appear as humans, although it isn't their true form. The Book of Hebrews warns against failing to show hospitality by strangers, since they might be angels in disguise.

As for not-disguised angels, the Book of Ezekiel describes seeing cherubim (singular: cherub) as accompanied by, rather than resembling, sparkly wheels, which, along with the cherubim's bodies, are covered in eyes. Each cherub has four faces: Of a cherub (doesn't help much), a man, an eagle, and a lion. I'd say that Zachariah's "four faces, and one of them is a lion" boast was something of a self-own for such a supposedly high-ranking angel, but I doubt that the writers looked into it that deeply.

The Book of Isaiah mentions a different kind of angel, the seraph(im), each of whom has six wings. Christians have, for a long time, interpreted them as higher-ranking than cherubim, although I'm not aware of any basis for this, other than the number of wings.

The widely-accepted canonical Bible gives us very little detail on archangels' appearance. (IDK about the Apocrypha.) They do, however, appear as powerful warriors and messengers. Virtually all Christian denominations accept Michael and Gabriel as archangels; Catholics accept Raphael as well. I grew up assuming that Satan was an archangel, even though I can't recall any verse which states it, so it's probably a common interpretation. I think that some of the smaller Christian denominations, in North and East Africa and Asia, believe there are more archangels, but I don't know the details.

Second, regarding Dean as the Second Coming: I've got to say, I did not see this one coming.

Christians differ widely on what they consider to be the details of the apocalypse, including the basic order of events. However, a few points stand out.

No major denominations subscribe to the idea of reincarnation, or believe that Jesus will return as a human. He had to live a human life to perfection in order to take away humans' sins; he doesn't have to be human to judge the dead and resurrect his true followers.

2. If Jesus did return as a human, he would have to be without sin. This doesn't apply to Dean, who is pure only in that he lacks demon blood.

3. Most of the series' obvious messianic imagery is attached to Sam, who ends the Kripke era by sacrificing himself at Stull. The religious parallels and imagery that do attach to Dean associate him with Michael. Michael is a powerful angel-- and, if you're working with Millennialism, it makes sense for him to be the one who enforces Satan's thousand-year timeout--, but he isn't God. Conflating him with Jesus would be as idolatrous as worshipping Lucifer.

4. The Antichrist and Jesus aren't equal and opposite forces in balance. To make a much-debated topic simple, ancient Christian texts exist which support the idea of a corrupted or animalistic man with some powers who uses miracles to set himself up as a ruler, pretends to be a messiah, persecutes people who refuse to worship him, and gets taken out by Jesus's light. But he's an Antichrist in the sense of being literally against God and of being a fake Christ, not being the other side of God's coin (although High and Late Medieval writers portrayed him as such in every way except his power level; e.g., they theorized that, since Jesus was born to a virgin, the Antichrist would be born to a prostitute). There's no reason for Jesus to be his brother, or even have a more personal relationship with him than he does with any other evildoer.

EDIT: I should have clarified that some smaller denominations (like the Jehovah's Witnesses) think "archangel" should be translated as something along the lines of "chief over angels" rather than "highest-ranking angel." Since the highest authority in Heaven is God, they believe that "archangel" doesn't mean a kind of angel, it refers to God in his capacity as lord of the Heavenly host. So, there are people who believe that "Michael" is another name for God. What nobody believes is that he is both an angel (which SPN and most denominations present him as) and God.

Hmm...to me it's:

1x01 Pilot - because that's how I met Dean and Sam Winchester.

3x03 - Bad day at Black Rock (I lost my shoe. I am Batman - I won’t say more. + I always liked Bela)

3x11 Mystery spot (I mean, just the trickster again and the heat of the moment)

4x06 - Yellow Fever (I mean, this is the first time we see a genuinely frightened Dean. + Eye of the tiger...)

6x15 - The French mistake (Jensen playing Dean who plays Jensen and calls himself a painted wh*ore; the “fake” Ruby being married to Jared; and J2 acting as if they can’t act + Misha being Misha...)

9x07 - Bad Boys (Sonny is the best; we get to know more about Dean’s past; and the scene in which Dean fights a battle with himself to stay and have a normal life, a father figure, and the girl he likes vs. leaving Sam alone with his father)

9x23 - Do you believe in miracles? (Not the episode itself; the scene in which Sam carries Dean and he says with his last breath ‘I am proud of us’ kills me.)

10x01 - Black (because it's Demon Dean...)

11x04 - Baby (I love what they did in that episode. The way they filmed it. Also, Baby is and always was their home, Sam concludes...)

11x07 - Red Meat (Sam is a fucking warrior. The way he fights his way back toward Baby, the relief as he finally finds her. Dean is ready to die once again only to get Sam back.)

12x09 - First Blood (even the Winchesters can break. Isolation did this to them. And, at least Marry is not a total c*nt in that episode...)

15x20 - Carry on (in the end, it's always been, Sam + Dean. Even in heaven, they find each other again.

My favorite scene of ah toy/Nellie, so far this season, is when they are out sitting in the field joking with each other. Who knew they could be so cute. Also, in that scene, Nellie said everything is going to be fine I knew then in tv that means the opposite is true...whomp...whomp. I'm sad we only got to see their peace for a few moments😔, but I'm so here for however they get revenge. If they both survive/and the show gets a proper end I hope it ends with them getting out of the city together.

Gosh, that scene was legit gorgeous. I like that they've always had a bit of teasing and humor in their relationship. It really was showing them as too perfect to last, but like you said, unless it's the finale, it can only mean bad things are on the way.

It was SO brutal, and it's gonna be tough to see for six more eps the Chinese groups fighting between themselves and being kicked around by white people until HOPEFULLY some kind of revenge in the season finale? At this point, there are so many bad whites, I'm assuming there must be a reason to keep Leary around and he'll realize class solidarity's more powerful than race? Rich white men are the enemy of everyone. But I'm not holding my breath.
