Reposted from the McLennon Server on the request of one of my friends. This is an essay I wrote up tonight regarding my interpretation of Paul McCartney’s “However Absurd.”
This builds off a concept that the server started discussing sometime in March 2022 -- the idea that Paul considered himself John’s domestic partner and that this was a desire or interpretation Paul had about their relationship in light of his various interviews where he said he wanted to take care of John. Paul being who he is, he could only imagine this in the context of touring as the Beatles which was safe for them because they were had privacy in hotels and the context of touring meant no one examined that John and Paul were essentially living together, along with George and Ringo. This dynamic would be special for Paul as he finally got to take care of John the way he always wanted but only in the context of being a part of The Beatles.
Leggy Maddingway — Today at 9:04 PM I'm kind of interpreting the above song with this lens:
things changed for John and Paul after John was living with him part time in Cavendish. The Scruffs noted that they often went into work together, John has referred to that year as "domestic," Paul has said since the 90s that he wished he could take care of John and that he basically viewed John as helpless, often referring to him in infantile terms.
We also know from an interview survey (the gamer girl bathwater one that I loled about a few moons ago) that Paul was interested in buying a farm out in the country as early as 1965.
My personal belief re: India is not so much that Paul rejected John when John came on to him, but that John asked Paul for a full blown relationship, as in living together, John divorcing Cynthia (which was already in the works) and being a genuine couple. He'd had a taste of this when he lived with Paul at Cavendish during 1967 before the India retreat. He wanted that full time and was desperate for a change. (Notably at this point he was already writing letters to Yoko Ono. He was looking for an offramp.) But Paul always wants things done a particular way -- I'm not even sure if homosexuality had been decriminalized at that point in the year, but it was still a very dangerous time to be gay even if you're a Beatle -- maybe especially if you're a Beatle since cops were already crawling up your ass trying to arrest you, they had already had conflicts with the police who were trying to bust them for drugs.
So with all that in mind, I posit that Paul said "no" and that he may have further insulted John by offering a really awful alternative -- Paul gets married and has a family while keeping John as the secret lover no one knows about. That would have been incredibly disrespectful to John regardless of circumstances so in my mind, a scenario like this is what would have triggered John into crawling to Yoko and subsequently blowing his life up. I simply don't believe that a "not right now" or a freak out over first-time sex would cause the kind of mental break we saw on John's end. However a firm backhand of disrespect and selfishness from Paul McCartney would.
The thing is, I also believe that Paul wanted to take care of John from a very early moment, maybe even from the moment he met John. This is primarily driven by the story about Here There Everywhere that Paul has told -- that he drove out to John's house to write, that John wasn't awake or wasn't dressed, and Paul hung out by the pool and managed to assemble Here There Everywhere in the time it took for John to at least wash his face and put on a clean pair of pants.
I think Paul must have gone up there, crept into the house, and woke John up from his depression sleep and John told him to fuck off and leave him alone, hence Paul's comments about John not being dressed and ready for the day. But Paul knew what John really meant so he just noodled around the pool with his guitar while John dragged himself out of bed.
Paul has mentioned how John was a tender hearted person and that he wanted to take care of John, and that's the anecdote that tells me he felt that way from the start.
"Here, There and Everywhere" is so obviously about John, I don’t get the people who try to insist that it isn’t and that it’s not related to them at all. But to me anyway it feels so clearly inspired by what's going on in front of Paul's face -- he's with John, John is sick and grumpy but Paul doesn't care: "But to love him is to need him everywhere." IDK, something about the song and the circumstances [that it was written under] shows so much tenderness and even understanding on Paul's part, John wasn't dressed for the day because he was depressed and exhausted and I think he yelled at Paul after Paul drove all the way to Kenwood just to be with John, but the fact that Paul wrote that song anyway just shows me that he knew better than to hold that outburst against John. He wanted John with him and since it sounds like Cynthia and Julian were gone for the day, he went there because he wanted to have John all to himself.
And then we get the quote that Veggie just pulled:
“Yeah yeah, it’s all very well, Paul,” muttered John. “Just because your Dad played in some old time music hall in the thirties doesn’t mean we should go on stage wearing white coats. People will think we’re a bunch of fairies.”
“Wait a minute, John, I’m burning the toast.” Paul, clattering about in the kitchen, seemed oblivious to John’s emphatic statement. He then came out of the kitchen with a pile of buttered toast on a large plate for the ravenous horde waiting.
“What did you say? I couldn’t hear you properly; oh, the white coats, is that what you’re on about? What’s your problem with that? Look John, it’s about time we started smartening up our image because we can’t go on looking like a gang of ruffians just dragged off the streets,” retorted Paul. “We must look professional – we’re on the stage, in the public eye, and appearances are important. If we start looking the part then perhaps you may even be able to get your chords right.”
Paul said this last point in a jovial manner, not wishing to rouse John’s temper, as he knew even after short acquaintance with John that he could soon ‘fly off the handle’ if provoked. John seemed unperturbed by the insinuation that Paul was making about his professionalism (or lack of it).
There was a silence for a couple of minutes as we all munched on our buttered toast.
“Yeah okay – but white coats? I can’t see myself in one of those. Anyway, where would we get them from?”
“Never mind that – Nigel will sort that out. Look, it will be you and me up front from now on as main guitarists and vocalists so it’ll look good, the both of us wearing the same gear. It will be white coats, white shirts and black bow ties – the rest of the group can wear white shirts and black bow ties..."
“Okay, we’ll all be in white then – it’s agreed,” said Paul. John then started up with a song that had recently been popularised: “A white sport coat and a pink carnation, I’m getting dressed up for a dance.” With that John did a little dance around the room. The Quarrymen Committee had arrived at another major decision without too much rancour.
I know this is mostly Paul being a decent host to a bunch of teenage boys but I also think that this is the earliest example we have of Paul already managing John/taking care of him domestically.
So when I see stuff like this:
Ears twitch, like a dog, Breaking eggs in a dish. Do not mock me when I say This is not a lie.
Happy dogs, eggs breaking into dishes, these images are things that I see in a lot of material today that's about romanticizing domesticity. Cottagecore/grandmacore and the like.
"Do not mock me when I say this is not a lie" <- for me this feels like a reference to a fight that they might have had about the sincerity of Paul's feelings. After the India retreat we know that Paul hardcore self destructed (I think seeing John glom on to Yoko so hard was a big shock and he may have realized what he had done). It could have easily lead to a fight anywhere between 1967 to 1980 about whether Paul meant it or not. Paul wasn't deliberate about his word choice, this was supposed to be a nonsense song but that means he was word associating so who else would he be talking about associating domesticity::mockery of him finally being sincere?
There's a lot of ground muttering about Paul lying to John about his feelings or just not articulating them and I think that this is true up to a point but I also flat out don't believe that Paul didn't take the opportunity at some point to finally spit out what he really felt. But it would be extremely on brand for John to mock him for it, regardless of whether he believed it or not.
But Paul has something to feel guilty about -- or he believes he does. "I didn't say what I thought in exactly the right way and if I had then John would still be here." He couldn't say the words. They didn't get his feelings through. So he's still talking to John and trying to make him understand.
Something special between us, When we made love the game was over. I couldn't say the words, Words wouldn't get my feelings through, So I keep talking to you...
I think for someone like Paul McCartney, the idea that two men could live openly together was absurd. And to be fair there was a lot of reality in that thought -- he and John were being targeted by the police, a sodomy charge would be more than enough to put them both away and ruin their careers.
But Paul wanted it. He wanted it was early as 1957. He wanted it when he wrote "Here There Everywhere." He admitted this in the 1990s when he was being questioned about John Lennon. However absurd it may seem, he did in fact want to be a couple with John and just be able to fuck off somewhere with dogs that have twitching ears and you can break an egg into a dish. That's probably what made the rejection so horrific -- not because he rejected John on a reasonable basis but because he thought the idea was too absurd to follow through with despite the fact that he wanted it.
However absurd, however absurd... It may seem. However absurd, however absurd... It may seem.
"Custom made dinosaurs" <- this is just my personal interpretation but when I read this I immediately imagined dinosaur costumes for kids. We have photos of Paul and Linda dressing their family up for Halloween and Paul going full PTA mom by carving pumpkins. Again, the full life he wanted: children and John and pastoral peace.
But it's too late now for a change, John is dead and Paul will never get him back. He's supposed to be the guy with everything but he's lost or estranged from everyone he's ever loved except for Richard Starkey which is...crushing.
Custom made dinosaurs, Too late now, for a change. Everything is under the sun, But nothing is for keeps...
This is not a nonsense song. It may not have been deliberate but this is not nonsense.
Tumblr media
mynamesbetty — Today at 9:20 PM Read a quote on Tumblr that was basically "John used his feelings to make music and Paul used music to access his feelings" That's what is happening here
VeggieRavioli — Today at 9:26 PM something something the band and touring as a means to play house something something
Leggy Maddingway — Today at 9:27 PM PRECISELY because they were in private, their women weren't there, Paul tried to get John to tour with him again 1969, that was the context where they could live together openly and Paul could care for John like he always wanted and no one would question it and I just
for fuck's sake Paul hemmed John's trousers in Paris
he wanted to be John's partner, he wanted to live with him, he wanted to be a couple. He did those couple things. He made John toast, he mended John's clothes, he looked after the packing, I just feel insane when I look at this stuff and it's adding up to all this fucking gay shit.

do you have that quote where paul is like “john was kinky and would have sex with a married couple with man there but that wasn’t gay”
Hiya anon,
Not sure if this is the exact quote you’re looking for, but it sounds similar to me:
Well, who cares, I suppose, yeah. I mean, well, I care, ‘cause as much as, like… [pause] A-all I care about is that if he isn’t, then it’s a naughty. I mean, if John was–the trouble is, see, is he’s not here to fend for himself, and we can’t ask him, “‘Scuse me, John, are you–have you ever been gay?” I mean, he’s the kind— I remember people used to ask that. There were lots of people asking cheeky questions, and they were always saying, “Well, why–have you ever tried homosexuality, John?” You know, they always used to ask all that kind of stuff. I remember John saying to them, “No, I’ve never met a fella I fancy enough.” And that was his kind of opinion. You know, “I may go–I may be gay one day, if some fella really turns me on.” He was–he was that open about it. But as far as I was concerned, I slept in a million hotel rooms–as we all did–slept in a million places with John, and there was never any hint of it. So I suspect that it’s just a–it’s just something to sell a book. The guy will say that I’m a hopeless romantic, and I’m naive, and I’m an idiot, and I’m cloaking stuff behind this mask of secrecy, and I’ve got a great front and I’m really a wicked person behind it. But you know, you can say all that stuff, but I just don’t think it’s true. I think he just made it up.
— Paul McCartney in interview w/ Roger Scott, 1983

Curious to hear your opinion on the theory that the banana milkshakes were a euphemism for blowjobs? Also, are there actually sources for the banana milkshake quote at all?
Firstly, I can’t find a source for it. The earliest it seems to have appeared is 2012 (also that’s when the idea it’s more than milkshakes started) on a post from @paulmcfruity (tumblr won’t let me tag them for some reason). So perhaps they know where it came from? It’s always attributed to them or just to Paul after that from what I can see. And he doesn’t mention it in Anthology. So, from that perspective let’s be careful with it until we’re sure it’s a) a real quote and b) the context he said it in.
Leaving that aside, though, this question is really do I believe that Paul McCartney was telling journalists that John Lennon gave him blowjobs in Paris? To which I say… no. I don’t think Paul would ever do that. Not in a thinly veiled innuendo. Why would he? What would be the point? There aren’t any other instances of Paul making a joke like that that I’m aware of. Or of him hinting him and John did anything outside of wanking together. He doesn’t even make gay jokes outside of doing that homophobic limp wrist thing.
So assuming it’s a real quote it’s way more likely to me that it’s a face value statement. John liked him and paid for him to have what was very much considered a luxury item. Even when I was growing up milkshakes were very much a treat item. So that’s how I’ve always seen it. Also because Paul can’t make a pun without telling you it’s a pun. Like this.
If we need it to be more - perhaps he’s saying milkshakes because they’re slightly seen as being for kids and really it was alcohol. If not, and if it’s GOT to be dirty, the only thing I can see Paul saying is that John bought him prostitutes. But again. I don’t think so.
Obviously this also comes from two other things that I believe. John and Paul weren’t having an affair. They didn’t consider any sexual contact they had as being anything other than lads letting off steam. Certainly not until much later than Paris. And secondly that even if they were Paul would never be so careless as to tell anyone publicly like that. That secret is so tightly locked down, that it’s never found it’s way into even being hinted at in even the most outrageous of books. If he was going around making jokes/just saying it outright, we’d have a lot more examples of it.
This is also, I’m aware, a killjoy answer. Like! I love people seeing shit like this and going, “I dunno. Seems gay.” I do it too! But, given you’ve asked for a serious answer I’ve given you one.

Paul McCartney: Inside the Songs | BBC Radio 4
Paul reads from his new book, The Lyrics (2021).
-
PAUL: A love song to John, written very shortly after he died. I was remembering things about our relationship and about the million things we’d done together: from just being in each other’s front parlours or bedrooms to walking on the street together or hitchhiking — long journeys together which had nothing to do with the Beatles. I was thinking of all these things in what was then my recording studio in Sussex. Before it was made into a studio it was just a little house with a small room upstairs with bare, wooden plank floors and bare walls, and I had my guitar with me, so I just sat there and wrote this.
It started — as it so often does — with finding something nice on the guitar. In this case a lovely chord. I just found that chord and pushed on from that. That was the dock and I could push the boat out and finish the song.
There’s one line in the lyric I don’t really mean: “Well knowing you / You’d probably laugh and say / That we were worlds apart”. I’m playing to the more cynical side of John, but I don’t think it’s true that we were so distant.
“But you were always there with a smile” — that was very John. If you were arguing with him, and it got a bit tense, he’d just lower his specs and say, ‘It’s only me,’ then put them back up again, as if the specs were part of a completely different identity.
Why can’t men say I love you to each other? I don’t think it’s as true now as it was back in the 1950′s and 60′s, but certainly when we were growing up, you would have to be gay for a man to say that to another man. So that blinkered attitude bred a little bit of cynicism. If you were talking about anything soppy, someone would have to make a joke of it, just to ease the embarrassment in the room.
But there’s a longing in the lines “If you here were today / And I am holding back the tears no more”, because it was very emotional writing this song. I’m just sitting there in this little bare room, thinking of John, and realizing I’d lost him. And it was a powerful loss. So to have a conversation with him — in a song — was some form of solace. Somehow, I was with him again.
“And if I say I really loved you”... There it is, I’ve said it... Which I would never have said to him.
It’s a very charged experience, to preform this song in concert. It’s just me and a guitar, in the middle of a big arena with all these people; and lot of them are crying. It’s always a very sentimental, nostalgic, emotional moment.

I mentioned Paul's strong resistance to being recognized as effeminate man or gay (here). Although he can hang out with gay guys, wear rainbow flag in public [yeah I definitely need to write that again in case someone didn't see it], being considered gay or "cute" is beyond endurance. I know someone love to interpret this as "don't want to his sexuality being mislabeled", which indeed looks sensible when it comes to the homosexuality, but this excuse can't be applied to the "cute" thing, right? You can't say being cute or feminine is the same thing as being gay, can you? Well, I can hear Paul's every single cell screaming O!M!G! Feminine! all the time. He doesn't want himself have anything to do with feminine, which, unfortunately can not be simply regarded as personal preference, it's indeed a despising of femininity, and femininity? Of course it's about female. Yes, "phallicism", the worship of masculine are still popular in today's society, but it doesn't mean it's right. I have to say Paul's thought is the product of this society, not to mention that he is an old man who grow up in a working-class family six decades ago, we can't demand him that much. His attitude towards women is the same thing.
PAUL: We were more amazed to see the [Japanese] women leaping up out of the seats for the promoter, because we'd never seen that in the West. The subservience of the women was amazing. They'd say, 'Oh God, I'm sorry - was I in your seat?' I remember us getting back to Britain and saying to our wives and girlfriends, 'I wouldn't want you to do that, but maybe it's a direction worth considering?' Promptly rejected.
— The Beatles Anthology
Although Paul seems to know that it's pretty cool for a woman to pursue her own career, like admitting Jane was famous before he was, allowing Linda to write a cookbook or have a photography exhibition, the androcentrism is too ingrained for him to forsake. He acknowledged Jane's achievements but still wanted her to give up work completely:
'I always wanted to beat Jane down,' says Paul. 'I wanted her to give up work completely.'
'I refused. I've been brought up to be always doing something. And I enjoy acting. I didn't want to give that up.'
— Hunter Davies, The Beatles
He allowed Linda to do her own thing, but they are not entirely hers - all those projects are belong to MPL, and do not forget Paul said this after Linda's death:
She never did anything on her own because we were together so much.
— Paul McCartney, interview w/ Chrissie Henderson for USA Week-end: Tears and laughter. (October 30, 1998)
That's so sweet to see Paul would support his wife any time, but on the other hand it also shows that Linda never get the chance to do something entirely on her own without Paul's interference after she got married. No wonder so many people from inner circle [including Linda, yeah] described Paul as "typical Northerner":
Linda confided that Paul was a ‘typical Northerner’ who believed women should stay at home while men worked.
— Bonnie Estridge, The Mail on Sunday. (March 20th, 2005)
Paul was raised the old-fashioned way. Men were the breadwinners; women stayed at home, had babies and tea on the table. He's still an old-fashioned guy, very careful with money.
— Ruth McCartney
Like the other Beatles, he [Paul] was essentially an old fashioned Liverpool man, who wanted his woman tucked away at home cooking the dinner and minding the kids.
— Cynthia Lennon, John
Jane was a serious actress and wanted to continue her career, but Paul had other ideas. That’s why Linda was so perfect for Paul; she was just what he wanted, an old-fashioned Liverpool wife who was completely devoted to her husband.
— Marianne Faithfull, Memories, Dreams and Reflections
I'd say Paul was not that old-fashioned, at least he allowed his wife to do other things besides being a full-time nanny, but everything she does must cater his needs. As Jane once mentioned, he always wants his girl to adore him like fans:
The trouble is, he wants the fans’ adulation and mine too. He’s so selfish; it’s his biggest fault. He can’t see that my feelings for him are real and that the fans’ are fantasy.
— Jane Asher, Love Me Do! The Beatles’ Progress by Michael Braun
I know some of the fans can't wait to jump up now and shout "Paul and Jane didn't have a mature relationship!" "He's much mature after he meet Linda!" "Paul and Linda had a very very very healthy relationship!" Ok, if you really did some research, you may know that he's never mature enough to know how to fully respect women, at least before the end of divorce with Heather Mills. I have seen the theory appears too many times that Paul and Linda's marriage is the result of careful consideration: Linda came along with a ready-made child and she's ready to marry again - well, I regret to tell you both Paul and Linda wouldn't agree with you.
I was a great disappointment to my family When I got married [to a geologist] and moved to Arizona, it was crazy. I had been pressured by men all my life. I rather liked being on my own, making my own decisions. I had actually sworn to myself that I would never get married again.
— Linda McCartney, interview for Playgirl: An intimate conversation with pop’s preeminent pair. (February, 1985)
As she says, she's quite enjoy her freedom and had absolutely no interest in marriage. What did Paul do? He "twisted her arm" to make her agree.
I persuaded Linda to come to London for a visit. Then I rang Heather in New York and said, ‘Heather, will you marry me?’ She was five. ‘No, don’t be silly,’ she said. ‘I’m too young.’ ‘Well, I can wait,’ I said. So we went to New York and brought her back to London to live with us, and I twisted Linda’s arm and finally she agreed to marry me.
— Paul McCartney, interview for Playgirl: An intimate conversation with pop’s preeminent pair. (February, 1985)
Linda also said neither of them knew what they were doing when they got married:
LINDA: 'So instead of getting an agent I met Paul instead and got married. Or I was going through a transition then and didn't know quite what I was doing and he obviously didn't know quite what he was doing so we ended up marrying instead.'
— Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now
Again, I'm not saying Paul and Linda never loved each other or their marriage was completely made up for media, but I don't think his marriage with Linda enabled him to prioritize other's feelings [his status as one of the four head monsters doesn't help]. Linda's overmuch unilateral compromises certainty don't make him look mature. Let alone his excessive dependence on her.

Reply to all these who think feminize Paul/men is a bad thing:
You love to say that Paul doesn't want the cute title because people used to mock him by that. I understand it. But do you ever think about why being feminine is not taking him seriously? Do you ever think about this is the discrimination about femininity from the whole society? Why does a man must be despised when he has anything to do with femininity? And Paul's approach is denying his femininity, which is the same with those who mock it, like - a man being feminine is a shame because it means he can't be "respected" like other men. It's the recognition of this concept, which is outdated if you think about it.
P.S. Someone who reblogged my post doesn't seem to like the sentence "there must be many sweet moments between Paul and Linda". Ok, I delete it then.

“Feminizing” Paul
There is a difference between A) calling a man pretty or admiring his graceful body language or his feminine features (although I don’t personally think eyelashes and lips need to constantly be gender-labeled as “masculine” or “feminine” - they can just be “long” or “lush” etc) and B) mocking a man for having what you perceive to be “feminine” traits (even if you think your jokes are not mean-spirited because Hey! feminine guys are awesome!) and especially C) making insinuations about a person’s sexuality based on external mannerisms or physical features.  The last example is homophobic behavior.  Even if you love gay people or fetishize them or personally identify as LGBTQ, it doesn’t matter! It’s still exactly the same thing homophobes do. Paul McCartney is not a sassy queen. If he was, and he self-identified that way, it would be totally cool to call him that and celebrate his fabulousness!  But as far as we know, Paul identifies as a straight man. Maybe not a super “macho” one- he wore ladies’ clothing in the 70s and sometimes he likes to playfully prance and twirl and stuff like that, which I agree is endearing and cute! But it’s questionable, at the very least, to make joke after joke about how OMG!feminine! the guy is. Of course you can admire his physicality (option A)- that’s what fans do with celebrities.  But please do so without taking a different sexuality and applying it to this person in a mocking way (as if everyone is in on the joke except Paul, who doesn’t realize what a flamboyant queen he is, LOL). I think it’s fine to speculate on an artist’s sexuality, too, so long as it’s based on their own words or even their art. But not when it’s second-guessing someone’s own identity based on your own judgments about their posture or bone structure (or worse yet, their interest in theater or having gay friends- like do you realize how homophobic that is?). Can you imagine a group of men coming on Tumblr and making post after post about a straight female celebrity, talking constantly about how butch she is and how hard she would fuck basically every woman she’s ever been photographed with? Lord knows there’s nothing bad about being butch or W/W but it would be a WEIRD thing to keep harping on about a straight woman!  Wishful thinking and fangirling/fanboying is fine.  “I wish she would top me” is different than calling a straight woman “such a power dyke.” The first is just a fun wish, the second is… weird and inaccurate and it just strikes me as maybe only half-way thought-through. I don’t think I have all the answers or claim that we’re perfect either. In our episode on Yoko we made a joke about her “big dick” - which we meant as a compliment, but that could be seen as problematic too. And maybe it was? The whole concept of a dick as being where power is stored is pretty lame, even if we all enjoyed making “big dick energy” memes and jokes for a year or so.  And yeah, Paul’s so-called “femininity” (which I put in skeptical quotation marks because again, we’re talking about gender-labeling both physical traits AND personality traits that DO NOT INHERENTLY BELONG TO ANY SEX) has been historically used to undermine everything from his intelligence to his artistic depth to his credibility (”diva” anyone?).  It’s not mine or anyone’s job to police and gatekeeper and tell people how they’re supposed to talk, I just urge us all to be a bit more thoughtful with how we use words and how we appropriate gay culture so voraciously. Also, please stop this tiresome straw-man argument of “there’s nothing wrong with being femme!” Of course there isn’t.  There’s nothing wrong with being anything! But everyone on this site knows better than to purposely mis-label a person’s gender or sexuality. Everyone also knows better than to characterize a person’s sexuality or gender identity in a way that would upset that person or make them uncomfortable. If someone prefers “Black” to “African American,” call them Black. If they prefer “Brown” to “Black,” call them Brown, etc. It’s not your place to make a judgment call about these terms, it’s for people to choose for themselves and it’s our place to respect them. I know I’ll probably get pushback that “this is just fandom” and “it’s not that serious.” And to an extent I agree because none of the Beatles would appreciate being called assholes or hearing our shitty opinions about their songs either and we all feel free to criticize them for all kinds of stuff that is essentially none of our business. I just think we need to pump the brakes from time to time when it comes to throwing labels on people.
And yes, perhaps I’m sensitive about this topic because I grew up in a much, much more homophobic era than our current one and I’ve definitely got scars from it. But I also believe that it’s OK to encourage everyone to think about this stuff and talk openly about it without attacking each other or getting overly defensive. -Phoebe

Little Miss Perfect
Mikasa x Reader
Tumblr media
I walk into the school councillor’s office at the very start of the school day so no one sees me. “Good morning, (y/n).” Ms. Lynn greets me. “How are you doing? I have to say, I was surprised that you requested to see me.”
“I’m… I should say I’m fine but I’m not.” I respond as I take a seat. “I don’t know who to talk to. I’m seen as this perfect person with no flaws and it honestly puts me under a lot of pressure, so I feel like I can’t talk to anyone about my problems.”
“Alright, why don’t you tell me what kind of pressure you’re under.” Ms. Lynn requests. “I know you feel like you need to be perfect so just elaborate what you mean.”
“Well, I’ve gotten straight A’s all throughout high school.” I start to explain. “I’ve got perfectly straight hair. I don’t cut corners on anything I do, just take a straight path, go straight forward. I’m the head of Student Council. I hate being late so I always make a point to be on time.”
“Alright, what about outside of school?” Ms. Lynn asks me. “You have a life outside of school, right?”
I nod. “I’m invited to all the parties but I don’t drink and especially don’t black out like almost everyone else does. My favourite singer is Paul McCartney- I love old music like the Beatles but also like new music and singers like Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga. (“Ok, what else?”) Well, I was adopted when I was two. My parents spoiled me rotten. Often, I ask myself ‘What did I do to get as far as I’ve gotten?’”
“Ok, so why exactly did you come to talk to me?” Ms. Lynn asks. “Um…” I say and look down nervously. “Nothing that we talk about in here will be discussed out there.” Ms. Lynn assures. “Unless it’s incredibly disturbing, of course.”
“Well… A few months ago I saw my friend walk by locker and I felt my heart flutter, and my face heat up.” I tell her. “Are you afraid that your feelings won’t be reciprocated?” Ms. Lynn asks me. I nod my head. “Well, that’s a worry we all have when he have feelings for someone.” Ms. Lynn says. “Except she’s a girl…” I tell her quietly. “I’m the perfect student, perfect girl, perfect friend, but I have a crush on my friend who’s a girl. What stereotypical perfect family depicts one of the children- hell, the parents as gay or lesbian?”
“When you think about how you feel about her, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?” Ms. Lynn asks me. “I can’t fall off my throne of perfection. I’ve never been in a relationship before so how do I even know what love feels like?” I say. “So I just pretend that I’m straight in hopes that I’ll trick my mind into liking someone like Armin, who’s extremely smart and already has three Ivy League schools begging him to go there when he graduates next year. Or Jean, who’s the star football player, captain of the team. Or even Eren. Anyone but a girl. But it didn’t work.”
“Of course, it didn’t.” Ms. Lynn tells me. “It’s the chemicals in our brain that determines what kind of person we like.”
“That’s not exactly what I mean…” I say. “I stayed over at her place last week because we were studying for a history test. I kept saying that everything I was feeling towards her was completely platonic, it obviously wasn’t. Her smirks were so enticing when I’d answer a question from the cue card and I got it correct. I didn’t even realize that hours had sped by until it was 9 pm and we ordered pizza.” I remember how when she took a sip of her water, I bit my lip and when she joked about a question on the test, I nearly choked on mine. “After that, she wanted to braid my hair and it was the first time I blacked out.”
I hesitate to continue. “You look nervous, (y/n).” Ms. Lynn notices. “What happened?”
“I lost control…” I say. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand-“ Ms. Lynn says but I cut her off. “I kissed her. Then I swear I saw a face in the window behind her as she looked… I don’t know, creeped out? She just kinda stared at me. The face reminded me of how I’ll fall off my throne and that I don’t know anything about love so how could I possibly love her? Then it said that I’m just confused and that we can forget all about this and no one will know. I freaked out and she told me that there wasn’t anything there, so I booked it out of her house. All my stuff is still there.”
“Why did you run away?” Ms. Lynn questions me. “She said ‘There’s nothing there’.” I answer. “Do you think she was talking about the face, and not about returning your feelings?” Ms. Lynn asks. I open my mouth to speak, but I don’t. I didn’t think about that. “Has your friend tried to talk to you?”
“I… I don’t know…” I say. “I’ve kinda been ignoring the whole situation like it never happened.”
“Maybe you should go find her and talk about it.” Ms. Lynn suggests. “The worst she can say is ‘no.’ And it’s alright to like someone of the same gender. It’s completely normal. And if people don’t like you for it, then you know who the real people are.”
I nod and stand up. “Thank you.” I say before exiting the office and going out into the hall.
“I remember seeing her every morning outside with Jean hitting on her.” I think to myself as I head out the front doors. “Maybe she’s there.”
I look around at all the students arriving for the day and indeed see Mikasa sitting on the same bench under the same tree with Jean hitting on her. I can hear my heart beating in my head and can even see my shirt shake slightly. “She’s gonna push you away.” The negative voice in my head tells me. “Run away, now. You’re reputation can be saved. You can still be the perfect person.”
I take a deep breath and ignore the voice as I walk over to Mikasa. “You know,” I hear Jean say to her as she reads her book. “I’ve got a game tonight, and it’d be great if you came. People say that I’m gonna score at least four- no, five touch downs!”
“Uh huh.” Mikasa responds monotonously. “Mikasa?” I call out her name. Her head snaps up from her book and I freeze when she looks right into my eyes. “Run away! Run away! Run away!” The voice orders me. Mikasa stands up and walks over to me, Jean looking completely confused. “I, um…” I stammer. Mikasa then, without saying anything, cups my left cheek her free hand and kisses me. “Don’t run away from me again, please.” Mikasa whispers as she pulls away. “You can come get your stuff tonight.”
All I can do is nod until I see Jean’s face as he realizes he’s been going after someone who will definitely never love him back which causes me to start laughing. Mikasa turns around and starts to laugh as well. “Sorry, Jean.” Mikasa apologizes. “I thought I made it clear in grade seven that I had no affection towards you.”
Jean nods, then gives us a thumbs up before going after the head cheerleader, only to have her friend, Ymir, punch him in the face. “Ten bucks says next month those two get together.” I bet. “Twenty says they already are.” Mikasa bets back and then we head inside to go to class.
Little Miss Perfect. That’s me.

Do you have the interview/ interviews when Paul says that if John was gay, he would’ve hit on him
Hiya anon!
The closest documented instance Ive come across where Paul more-or-less says “if John was gay he would have hit on me” comes from Julia Baird, Johns half-sister:
Brian Epstein, the Beatles’ manager, was a known homosexual. Epstein was always polite and charming. It has been insinuated that John was drawn to Epstein. I believe there was no such relationship between them. John was macho. But if John was a homosexual, it would have made no difference to me. I’ve asked Paul McCartney, who laughed and said: ‘Why not me? I’m handsome.’ Then he said: ‘I was holed up with John in hotel rooms everywhere. There was never a suggestion of anything like that.’ I believe him.
—Julia Baird, Boston Globe: Lennon’s half-sister remembers… (October 2nd, 1988) via @amoralto
There’s also a 1988 interview in which he makes a similar satirical comment:
I think where [Albert Goldman] starts to exaggerate and says that John was possibly homosexual, I think he throws that in with some of the truth, and it starts to have the same credence as the real truth, and I think that’s the problem with the book. […] And I say, if he’s homosexual [jokingly] I would have thought he’d make a pass at me in 20 years, darling.
—Paul McCartney’s reaction to The Lives Of John Lennon, Today, 1988
This interview is actually only a partial fit for the “if John was gay he would have hit on me” comment given that Paul still uses the words “I would have thought…”, which doesn’t exactly deny any and all possibilities that John might have been bi/gay. And it's notable as well that in both interviews detailed above, he’s being somewhat hyperbolic and comic in saying ‘why not me?’.
They seem to be closest matches I could find though!
However, there’s a surplus of quotes in which Paul reasons that he’s not convinced John was bi/gay, because if John had been Paul would have expected that he would have made some kind of move on him:
There were lots of people asking cheeky questions, and they were always saying, “Well, why – have you ever tried homosexuality, John?” You know, they always used to ask all that kind of stuff. I remember John saying to them, “No, I’ve never met a fella I fancy enough.” And that was his kind of opinion. You know, “I may go – I may be gay one day, if some fella really turns me on.” He was – he was that open about it. But as far as I was concerned, I slept in a million hotel rooms, as we all did, slept in a million places with John, and there was never any hint of it.
—Paul McCartney in interview w/ Roger Scott, 1983 via @amoralto
PAUL: The rumours came later because he’d gone on holiday with a gay guy [Brian] […] I don’t think it is true, I’ll tell you why, cause I slept with him a million times.
HOWARD: And he never came onto you?
PAUL: I tell you. And Ive seen him on tour, roaring drunk, out of his mind—in the early days, before he sobered up, and went to rehab…roaring drunk, and it was always with a female.
HOWARD: It was?
PAUL: Never once…
HOWARD: He was not a homosexual?
PAUL: And I suspect, if you’ve got a little gay tendency and you’re roaring drunk, Im gonna catch him.
HOWARD: Yeah somethings gonna happen…
PAUL: Once...Somewhere…
HOWARD: And he’s gonna come onto you cause you’re a good looking guy, there’s no question about it.
—Paul McCartney in interview w/ Howard Stern, 2001
The funny thing is when later the rumour came out that John was gay, I said: ‘I don’t think so.’ I mean, I don’t know what he did when he went to New York, but certainly not in any of my experiences. We used to sleep together, top and tail it, you know. I always used to say: 'Come on, I would have spotted something here.’ But what I spotted was completely the opposite. It was just chicks, chicks, chicks.
—Paul McCartney in interview w/ Pete Doherty, The Guardian, 2007
This is an incomprehensive collection of Pauls commentaries on Johns sexuality throughout the years, I was just picking out a few interviews that I found interesting. However, if you’d like to read more on this then have a look through this post from @thebeatlesaesthetic!
To be honest, I do actually understand the logic behind thinking ‘well I never saw/heard anything that would suggest he was bi/gay, so he probably wasn’t’. Obviously, don’t get me wrong, it’s a flawed logic—but it’s still one where I can understand the reasoning behind it.
I think right-off-the-bat the ‘he never made a move on me, so he couldn’t be gay’ sentiment could rub off as almost an ego-driven reflection (‘they’re gay, Im attractive—who could resist??’), but to me, its more about just having spent so much of your life with that person, and feeling like you really knew the ins-and-outs of them.
Being drunk and alone-together in a bed would seem like a pretty apt environment to make a move on someone if you were attracted to them, and given that their relationship was already an intense one, I can see the logic in thinking that if John was bisexual, why wouldn’t he take this already potent relationship to the next level?
Obviously, I don’t think Johns relationship with his sexuality was that simple (and furthermore, his relationship and feelings towards Paul were definitely not that simple either), so I think there’s still plenty of room to explain why he might never have attempted a physical relationship with Paul, even if he had wanted one. But as I said before, I can see how Paul got from point A to point B here.
And I think another big thing is that Paul valued his relationship with John a lot, so Im sure he wants to feel like he actually knew this person—which is fair enough, because he obviously did know John very well. But if you have biographers and journalists telling you new information about a close friend, and there’s no way you can actually gain any clarity on this, I think it’s a normal response to reflect on your own experiences in having known that person, and conclude that this is probably sensationalism, given that you never saw anything to support the speculation.
I also find it interesting though that Paul tends to tell things from his own perspective, i.e “as far as I was concerned”, “I would have thought”, “I don’t think it is true”. He’s not saying that he knows John was heterosexual beyond a shadow of a doubt, he’s only saying that he doesn’t think John was bisexual, because he knew him very well and never got that impression from him. So he doesn’t outright deny the rumours, he only offers his own truth on the matter.
To reiterate though, Pauls position is not an entirely unproblematic one, and there’s plenty of criticisms that could be made to counter his logic. But my point is that his thinking on this subject is still understandable.
Bonus: Also, for anyone interested I actually had a recording of the Howard Stern interview from 2001 saved to my library, so if you fancy some visual/audio contexts have a watch!:

I’d disagree with the anon that Paul was “incapable” of love, but I do agree he was very distanced, and pretty cruel (to women) when he was younger. (It was unfortunate they bought into the love at first sight myth, but he was also a charmer, and dropped affection and got colder after fucking them.)
But I just can’t see romantic interest on Paul’s end. I’m sure he loved John, but a lot of the “sexual/Romantic evidence” really can just be as construed as platonic love. I feel there may be some confirmation bias looking for “clues”. (Not an attack on anyone, but some of the analysises seem to try too hard, really).
He does make references, with the whole “calling him babe during concerts”, and “in bed” but that could just mean he’s not uncomfortable with coming off “gay”. He has a quote about it somewhere I think. He’s supportive of the community at any rate.
This is kind of my own bias, but at times I think he…plays it up a little during the present day? Again, I’m positive he did love John a lot, but with how he is, a charmer, good at manipulating his image, he knows there is a benefit to building up the “magical” Lennon McCartney dynamic. John’s dead, and the old conflicts have faded, so he has no reason not to. I don’t think he’s anti-social, or a psycho or anything, but he certainly does put a lot of thought into his image, especially now, with how he wants to leave his legacy.
I’m less knowledgeable about John, and the speculation about his mental illnesses, but on his end, I can certainly see it. Maybe he’s just blind, but the looks are very much…yeah. He does seem to rely Paul a lot, and hold him in very high regard (REGARDLESS of what those old male biographers might make of him). You just know he was suffering over Paul, poor bastard.
Not sure if anything happened. I think Paul knew though, and either ignored it, or was kind, knowing John wouldn’t act on it. OR he didn’t notice! With the whole “we shared beds A LOT. you would think he’d make a pass at me, darling~”
I guess that’s how I see it. I don’t really have strong feelings on the nature of their relationship, or want them to be “confirmed”, so I try to be as objective as possible! Not a shipper, but not a male biographer. In fact, I was very put off learning the ship was a thing at first! With every fan base “having to” ship the main male leads, that’s what I thought this was. But after three years, reading actual books, primary stuff, I’ve began to change my mind on its legitimacy, and this was my conclusion. But new information can always change!
(Sorry for the long long analysis, god! I just took my adderall and I should go eat! Feel free to block me for spam/harassment.)
Yeah, this is basically my big mclennon dilemma: did Paul love John?
Of course he loved him, but I mean did he harbour any homosexual feelings towards John - and I just go back and fourth on that a lot.
In my last response to an anon I wasn’t necessarily trying to argue that Paul was romantically/sexually attached to John, because all in all, I don’t believe he did - but it probably came off that way because I didn’t particularly like the way the anon had phrased some stuff (like calling him “a master manipulator” and “incapable of love”) and so I just sort of wanted to show that the relationship was more nuanced then just “john was simping for paul”. My overall point with that response was more so that whilst I think Paul struggles in showing real affection and emotions, I don’t think he was incapable of love prior to Linda. I think he did really love John (in whichever form of love you want to take it: romantically, platonically etc.)
And so my point I guess wasnt so much that Paul was always capable of love (because I think he did at least love his family, his close-friends, probably Jane etc.), but maybe more so that he was always capable of intimacy with another person, though he struggled with it.
But yeah, he was quite cruel to a lot of the girls he slept with in the 60s, but I wouldn’t say that suggests he was incapable of love (i know thats not what you’re saying but other people might interpret it through that lens) I would just say he was young, dumb, ridiculously rich and famous and not emotionally mature enough yet to really empathise with most of those girls. Not trying to completely excuse him, but like, i dunno, i always just try to view people from the most human perspective. Everyones an twat sometimes yknow
I also really struggle to see romance on Pauls behalf towards John - the only times I think “wait but maybe he did fancy john back” is when I read some of his lyrics (like in ‘Coming Up’, ‘Yvonne’s The One’, and to some extent ‘Here Today’ - though I think interpreting Here Today as strictly platonic love is still a valid interpretation). I mentioned this in a different post though, that analysing his lyrics just isnt particularly convincing for me, because it feels more like speculation - and also as someone who does write songs, I know that a lot of lyrics just arent as deep as we wish they were. It is really difficult to be truly introspective and honest in a song, without exaggerating or hyperbolising or fictionalising any autobiographical aspects.
I do see your point with Paul possibly playing up the “Lennon/McCartney m a g i c” - im not entirely sure how much I agree, but I do agree to some extent. I think he’s always been very image conscious, and being in what is probably the all-time most famous pop band definitely wouldve heightened that. Even as a teenager I think he’s always just had this natural charm about him, and that tends to stem I guess from a need to be liked; I think you can see it in every interview he’s ever done to be honest. Its not necessarily a bad thing, (because id take a charmer over a rude knobhead any day) but I guess it sort of just shows that Paul is flawed like everybody else. Also, just read @mothernatures-sons tags and I agree with her - Paul just knows when to be a nice person! Nothing wrong with that! It isnt manipulative like the last anon suggested, its just how most people are: polite :) Ive heard a lot of anecdotes from people who have worked with or met Paul and the majority of them say he was a just a nice guy. Not saying he was never an arsehole (cause yeah he was pretty cruel to those girls in the 60s) but I think overall, hes a pretty good guy 👍
On the other hand though, you could also say that superficial journalists are looking for superficial answers - and Paul knows what the people want to hear. But occasionally ill hear an interview that does seem more intimate then most - I havent listened to it in awhile, but the interview he did with Sean I remember felt more honest to me then most. And when he said he’d like to spend the day “in bed” with John, to me that felt like a genuine and fitting response. Because, whilst it has sexual connotations, it also just feels like he’s saying he’d just like to sit around, chat, dont chat, just whatever with John for a day. Like he would just like another moment of intimacy with him.
I think we are pretty much in agreement on most of this though! At first I was also like “nah, mclennon isnt real, teenage girls just love shipping guys!” (I am a teenaged girl and I can confirm this lol) but then it just sort of became apparent to me through reading more and more about their relationship that there probably was something more on Johns behalf. If John wasnt in love with Paul, then it feels as though a lot of things he said and did just dont add up (the big one for me is him marrying Yoko so soon after Paul married Linda - like I really cannot come up with a heterosexual explanation for that!)
But when it comes to Paul, though ill have moments of doubt, I dont think he was in love with John (homosexually) and I do think a lot of the evidence on Pauls behalf seems like a stretch (but like you, im not having a go at anyone, because I understand that it is easy to carried away, plus its fun - but realistically, most of Pauls evidence just is not convincing to me). He’s comfortable with his sexuality, and I really do try to respect that and not force a gay interpretation of quotes or songs from him, unless it is genuinely making me question his sexuality and mclennon.
PS dont worry, I didn’t take this is spam at all!! And also, I would never block someone just for disagreeing with me! I enjoy discussion and I think its good to engage with people who disagree with you! To be honest, id only block someone if they were purposely being a real arsehole <3

I was reading Norman's biography of Mick Jagger the other day and at some point I realized that good old Mick had it BAD for John. They hung out a lot in the Lost Weekend and Mick seemed heartbroken when May told him John had gone back to Yoko. He was so upset that he talked to the press about it multiple times, whining about not having any access to John and that he was hiding behind Sean. Mick wasn't wrong, though. I was just very entertained by his reaction. Then there is this:
"Mick, as a result, had found himself in the—for him—highly unusual position of wanting to see someone but having his every friendly overture rebuffed.
From his sitting room window, he could see the Gothic rooftops of Lennon’s home, and would sometimes act out the part of a spurned girlfriend: “[John’s] right over there. Does he ever call me? Does he ever go out? No. Changes his phone number about every ten minutes. I’ve given up . . .” But there was no disguising how much this apparent indifference really hurt. Once or twice, he put aside the Tyranny of Cool sufficiently to leave Lennon a note with his own current phone number at the Dakota concierges’ desk, but no response ever came."
LOL "John is right over there. IS HE THINKING OF ME?" The thirst was real, you guys. I don't remember Mick being this sad about any of his women leaving him. Me thinks Johnny hit and quit it but someone fell in love, you see.
I agree, Mick sounds like a jilted lover/girlfriend here who just wants to be at least acknowledged. He was seriously upset about the fact that, when John went back to Yoko he knew that she didn’t like him. She thought he wasn’t worth John’s time and was a bad influence. Gotta remember, Mick and John had been friends since the sixties-- Mick was much closer to John then Paul, even.
Also talk about the gall because she was completely fine with John hanging out with the likes of Klein, Phil Spector, and Magic Alex... Like, talk about bad influences-- Phil fucking pointed a gun at John because he liked to freak John out and upset him. She liked these people. She approved of them for John. Yoko isn’t fully to blame, John also holds blame for how he’d treat people and just cut them off [even if he personally didn’t want too] but she encouraged John to cut ties with family and close, old friends just, like that.
I feel for Mick. I honestly feel for anyone who loved John, it did seem trying at times. I mean, sometimes it’s not always easy for me to love John just as some crazed groupie... I could only imagine how intense and, confusing and exciting and, memorable it would have been to know him, personally, and get to love him personally.
I personally don’t think anything serious happened between John and Mick. Kind of like how I believe nothing deeper then just, solid friendship was between John and Stu-- someone he could confide in, who wasn’t just Paul.
Was there flirting between the two? Absolutely, though I find it to be a partially playful joking sort of flirting between friends, and partially with a serious edge to it. Libra’s are natural flirters, they often to do it unintentionally because it’s just, part of their personality. John most likely both an unintentional and intentional flirt, and his male friends weren’t left out on his teasing’s and naughty, playful behavior [specifically moreso open and direct about it in the 70s]
But, I do think you’re right that Mick had it bad. Most male friends of John seemed to have it bad for him, in some way or another. Women and men loved John-- he was rather easy to love, despite how he’s painted and the sort of front he put up. As Paul said-- John was a loveable guy, everyone loved him, and he was right [though Paul usually only mentions everyone else when talking about loving John, deflects onto others at the same time but I digress]
Even men who apparently thought of him a poky bastard seemed to inevitably be drawn to him, and like him [like David Bailey]
He was loved, so, so much.
“The theory is that when John went off to Spain on holiday with Brian, that’s what it was all about - John trying to get his position clear as the leader of the group. Also, I’m sure Brian was in love with John. We were all in love with John, but Brian was gay so that added an edge.” Paul McCartney - Anthology
PAUL: “Well, I’m sure Brian was in love with John, I’m sure that’s absolutely right. I mean, everyone was in love with John; John was lovable, John was a very lovable guy.” [x]
“What did John Lennon see in me? I think outrageousness and being true to myself and not giving a fuck. We hit it off straight away, even though I was in complete awe of him. He was nothing else but kind to me. I never saw the other side of John, the Harry Nilsson drinking side of John, where he turned on a sixpence. I only saw the gentle, gorgeous side of John, and he was gentle not only to me but my parents, my band members, and I just fell in love with him.”
— Elton John [x]
“Nowhere can the caring side of John Lennon be documented more accurately than in his relationship with Malcolm Evans, the very tall and bespectacled man who became a regular as a road manager, along with Neil Aspinall, on the Beatles’ tours. Evans had a magnetic personality and was a favorite with reporters and the women who tagged along. His smile and charm could be deceptive; he would have done anything to protect the Beatles. At one point on the touring aircraft, while traveling from Jacksonville to Boston in 1964, a tired Mal Evans sat next to me in the rear of the aircraft with tears trickling down his face. I asked, “What’s the matter?” Mal answered, “John got kind of cross with me … just said I should go f— off. No reason, ya’ know. But I love the man. John is a powerful force. Sometimes he’s rough, if you know what I mean, man. But there’s no greater person that I know.” I never learned what the dispute was about, but I do know that a few minutes later, a sullen Lennon walked by and embraced Evans.” — Larry Kane [x]
“Sharing a twisted sense of humour and a penchant for mischief, Nilsson and Lennon were natural buddies. It was perhaps inevitable that the LA-dwelling singer would gravitate towards Lennon. Lennon clearly appreciated Nilsson’s edginess and was very likely looking for a male soulmate to fill the hole left by McCartney. For his part, Nilsson’s feelings for Lennon ran even deeper: ‘I really fell in love with him. He was all those things you wanted somebody to be.”
Man On The Run: Paul McCartney in the 1970s by Tom Doyle [x]
“But the acerbic John is the one we know and love, you know, because he was clever with it, so it was very attractive. But, for me, I have more than a slight affection for the John that I knew then, when we were first writing songs, when we would try and do things the old songwriters had done. I slightly regret the way John’s image has formed, and because he died so tragically it has become set in concrete. The acerbic side was there but it was only part of him. He was also such a sweet, lovely man – a really sweet guy. ””
— Paul McCartney, discussing John Lennon [x]
John was a charming man in his own right, charismatic, and funny. Having a good sense of humor is always attractive, and draws people to you. As Paul says, and Elton, John was kind, he was sweet and friendly. He wasn’t always this, Mr. Tough and aggressive, ripping into people with his sharp tongue. He was gentle, he could be gentle, in his own way. Warm, and loving.
He had this ability to just... make you feel like you’ve known him longer then you actually have. Like you have some sort of, special relationship or connection with him-- that you were the only one who was close enough to see underneath his armor, to know him as intimately as anyone else ever could.
Course, this was simply how many felt and wanted to be the reality[specifically men], when it wasn’t, not exactly. They didn't really know the real John, they didn't get to see him at his most sincere, when his beautiful armor was chipped away and he was standing naked and scared. He described himself like a chameleon when it came to social settings, when interacting with different individuals [friends], which honestly makes sense as a Libra [Gemini’s are just as guilty of this]
They got to know a facet of John... Maybe they did get a glimpse of John here and there, but it’s just reality that John didn’t just, open up so easily to people like that. He didn’t like feeling vulnerable, and he had a habit of testing people’s loyalty and love for him [whether it had been consciously or not, I’m not always sure] because of the insecurities and doubt that one day, they’d turn on him or abandon him.
Again, he had this way in making people [other men] feel as if they had an intimate and special connection with him. And maybe they did to varying degrees. John had a way to act open with others, without actually being open and vulnerable, or at least not fully. I’m not sure if I’m making sense lol
Only ones who I think ever got to know the real John, were Mimi(of course she raised him), Pete (friends since they were just peanuts), Cynthia somewhat, May got glimpses and wanted John to be himself and independent... Yoko to a degree (though she focuses on entirely pushing and talking about Brand John Lennon™)
And who I know for a fact did, and does know John the most intimately, deeply, unabashedly, is Paul.
But anyway, speaking of being so very attractive, John was attractive. Like, many women and men found him exceedingly attractive, like this one male photographer who believed John was the most handsome out of the band;
“I think John was the best looking, actually. The refined nose.  He never went out of his way to be a disagreeable person.  He would be the one to go over and just sit and sign some little girl’s book...”
Harry Benson, photographer who took the photo of the iconic pillow fight and other well known Beatle photos, talks about John. [x]
Then we have David Bailey, who described Paul, Ringo, and George as rather pleasant-- while describing John as being a fucker, a bit poky.
And yet, it was John who David Bailey claimed to like, out of all of them.
“I didn’t like the Beatles – I liked John ... John was a fucker. Paul was always the nicest guy in the world. George, he always seemed full of angst. Ringo always seemed Mr Nice Guy. But John was a bit poky; I liked him.”
-- David Bailey Originally; published in the March 2014 issue of British GO magazine.
That’s honestly the only parts of the interview worth reading, Bailey is sort of a dickhead and clearly seems biased against Paul, and just The Beatles as a band in general, so [which is fascinating. Considering he might’ve been peeved towards Paul ever since John brought his partner along for that photoshoot because he didn’t want to go in alone lol]
Mick did love John, though in what way or in what varying degree, is up for discussion and personal conclusion. Just like how it’s up to interpretation and discussion how much and in what way David Bowie, Elton John, Harry Nilsson, Mal Evans, Billy Preston, and Brian Epstein loved John.
But it’s clear as day that, in my opinion, they almost all seemed to have some sort of man-crush on him. A serious admiration. Harry Nilsson sounded like he was in a bro-mance with John [or at least he wanted to be in one with him]
Course we can’t forget Paul, but we all know that Paul loved John in such varying degrees, it’s truly impossible to label it. They’re soulmates, can’t really categorize the love between soulmates so easily.
Anyway, point of this all; Mick definitely had it bad for John, but then again who didn’t?

Paul McCartney on John Lennon’s Sexuality [Quotes]
Tumblr media
[wordcount: 1.3 k]
I don't think [the gay claims] are true. John never ever tried anything, I slept with him a million times. I've seen him on tour roaring drunk, out of his mind in the early days before he sobered up and went to rehab. Roaring drunk and it was always with a female, never once [with a man]. If you've got a little gay tendency and you’re roaring drunk I'd have caught him once.
— Paul McCartney (from The Sun)
That was the intimacy we had. We would always be walking in on each other and things. I’d walked in on John and seen a little bottom bobbing up and down with a girl underneath him. It was perfectly normal: you’d go, ‘Oh shit, sorry,’ and back out the room...
That’s why I’ve always found very strange the theory that John was gay. Because over fifteen years of sharing rooms, sharing our lives, not one of us has an incident to relate of catching John with a boy. I would have thought that kind of thing would be more prevalent, and John’s inhibitions were certainly free when he was drunk.
...
So there was the homosexual thing - I’m not sure John did anything but we certainly gave him a lot of grief when he got back [from Spain with Brian].
...
There has been a suggestion since that John had some homosexual thing with Brian, but I personally doubt it. All the intimate moments we shared were always about girls.
— Paul McCartney (from The Beatles Anthology book)
The funny thing is when later the rumour came out that John was gay, I said: 'I don't think so.' I mean, I don't know what he did when he went to New York, but certainly not in any of my experiences. We used to sleep together, top and tail it, you know. I always used to say: 'Come on, I would have spotted something here.' But what I spotted was completely the opposite. It was just chicks, chicks, chicks.
— Paul McCartney (from The Guardian 2007 interview with Pete Doherty)
But I--I mean, I hear [Peter Brown] said John Lennon had a gay thing with Brian Epstein when they went to Spain together once.  That's been rumored for years. I mean, was he in the room with them? It's probably just wishful thinking on his part. But I'll tell you what's naughty about it--that John's not here to answer it, and neither is Brian. All that stuff that's written about us, I just hope that people who've sort of heard of our music, vaguely, know what the Beatles, or the ex-Beatles, were--and it wasn't what's been written. I mean, John's time and effort were, in the main, spent on pretty honorable stuff.
— Paul McCartney (from the Playboy 1984 interview)
I don't actually know the truth of the John [and Brian Epstein relationship] rumor. I mean, all I can ever say about that is that I slept with John a lot just 'cause you--you had to sleep and you know you didn't have, you know, more than one bed. And, um, to my knowledge John was never gay. It might've been--I've suspected that the John thing and Brian was a power play on John. 'Cause John was a very political animal. And John I suspect went away on that, uh, Spanish holiday, wherever it was, number one 'cause nobody went on holiday so anyone--I would've gone. Anyone would've gone. Off a free holiday? You're kidding. Yes! I'm there. Number two, I'm sure John took Brian aside and said "Hey, you wanna deal with this group, I'm the guy you deal with. Okay?" John was that kind of guy. Very sensible, very pragmatic. So I'm sure that was the main reason John went there. Now as to whether there was any sort of gay dalliance or whatever, I don't know. That's--that's--that’s, uh, I can't tell you that... And I say, he never hit on me at all. You know, there was never any question of it at all. And I say, we lived so intimately together that there would've been one evening when he's sort of drunk and so and so and so, would've been in his character to do that...
— Paul McCartney (from the Beatle Stories channel)
I slept in a million hotel rooms, as we all did, with John and there was never any hint that he was gay...
When the group was formed John was a smart cookie. Brian Epstein was going on holiday to Spain and Brian was gay. He invited John along. John, not being stupid, saw his opportunity to impress upon Mr Epstein who was the boss of this group. And I think that's why John went on holiday. And good luck to him, too - he was that kind of guy, he wanted Brian to know who he should listen to in this group, and that was the relationship...
So they say he went on holiday with someone who was known to be gay and therefore he is gay.
— Paul McCartney (from Lennon, Ray Coleman)
I think where [Albert Goldman in his John Lennon biography] started to exaggerate and says that John was possibly homosexual. I think that he throws that in with the truth and it starts to have the same credence as the real truth... But, um, there's a bit about me where John's supposed to come around to my house and put his foot through a picture or something. Well, I mean, it never happened you know. So if one of them never happened it's quite possible that a lot of stuff in the book never happened. And I say, if he’s homosexual, I'd have thought he'd made a pass at me in 20 years, darling!
— Paul McCartney (from The Today Show 1988)
You know, that rumor [about John being gay] came out a long time ago and the thing was, the person that started the rumor or the book that it was in, he didn't know John. Whereas I did. So I--I said to people, you know around about that time, said, "Look. I was on tour with John. I grew up with John. We kind of--we slept in the same bed in hotel rooms. We topped and tailed it like kids do, you know, when you're growing up." And I said, "I never once did I see any hint of that." Now, you know, we spent drunken nights together. I think there would've been a hint. Don't you? Somewhere. If he was gay, I think there would've just been a hint, somewhere. But it was a rumor started, uh, years ago that I--I think is a nice story if you can make it stick, but I don't think it's true.
— Paul McCartney (on The Howard Stern Show)
Stern: Here's what [Philip Norman’s] book claimed: Your sexuality was so powerful over [John], he was so enamored of you, so attracted to you, almost... McCartney: Wow. Stern: ... that you could have your way with him. Not sexually... Quivers: Did you feel a power over him? McCartney: No. Stern: ... that in business. That you had a--that--that he was sort of at your mercy because he was so in love with you. That was the theory in the book. McCartney: Well, you know, I mean I--I like that theory. Stern: Yeah [laughs]. Wish that could've been true. McCartney: No, man. Stern: No, not to have sex, but to be able to control him more because it would've been a little bit easier, business-wise. McCartney: No, but--but Howard, listen man. You can make up theories about anything... I mean, you know, we can make up anything. And that is really, particularly with The Beatles, that is what happens. They just take one tiny fragment of evidence and they blow it up into a book, even.

▬▬▬▬
If I were to insert my own personal take on this...
I think part of the reason Paul is insistent on John’s heterosexuality (other than because he never saw John as gay) is because Paul found Albert Goldman’s, Philip Norman’s and Peter Brown’s biographies ‘trashy’. As he said when speaking about Goldman’s book in 1988: “For me, I just think it’s trash.” The rumors were around before the books’ release, but I think they - particularly Goldman - widely spread the theory among the public and elaborated on it. Paul claims there are lies in the books and he’s commented before that he strongly dislikes when people ‘cash in’ on the Beatle story with made up information. Especially when it was old friends, like Peter Brown.
As far as I can tell, Paul is also a bit protective of John’s image. To quote him from the Today Show: “[John] isn’t here to defend himself. I think that’s the big problem with a book like [Goldman’s]. It’s too cheap a shot, I think.” Remember that this book was released not even ten years after John’s death, when his name must’ve been a hot-ticket, and it’s obvious John wasn’t there to respond to any claims. John used to be asked about his relationship with Brian, denying that anything happened between them. But in these books, it was no longer asking John directly if he were gay; it was speculating that John was gay and strongly suggesting it to the reader. I think Paul feels the need to talk about what John was really like, even clarifying things like John’s flawed nature, or that John wouldn’t have wanted to be a martyr. John’s sexuality is something deeply personal and accusing him of being gay even more so. Paul must see himself as one of the few people who knew John well enough to comment on such personal things like that - which is why he says things like “I mean, was he in the room with them? It's probably just wishful thinking on his part” about Brown writing on John’s trip to Spain. I think he must find spreading rumors like that a bit presumptuous.
And of course there’s the thought that John might’ve been attracted to Paul himself. I think Paul values his memories of John’s friendship to the highest degree. So, when he hears people turning it into something else entirely, he almost immediately goes “No, no” in very clear and firm terms as he did on The Howard Stern show.
I know there is a variety of opinions on this subject, but that’s just mine!
