Calibreon Expansion #15 - Gryphon
Somewhat lore, mostly speculative thought about my choices in deign under the cut.
Gryphon are a species of Calibreon that have always remained semi-nebulous in their existence. Thinking about Gryphon as any large massive species never seemed to work because there in my mind wouldn't be enough food to sustain them where I imagined they'd be so I settled for something simpler and more compact.
These medium-sized creatures can be found in northern Talis. Though by nature they are wild, it is possible to tame one for work in hunting results may vary on workmanship with one. They're at largest around the size of an average bobcat and form groups or prides of around 5-8 individuals. While they can fly it's not very long-distance and is ideal for short burst hunts and roosting at night.
Weyr are one of the few species to have constant run-ins with Gryphon. While they won't actively hunt one another sometimes Gryphon will follow a Weyr hunting party and try to snipe their catch from them- typically interactions never get more violent than this. Some Weyr are even clever (or brave) enough to try and tame a Gryphon much like someone would a hawk or eagle for Falconry practices. Gryphon are very tempermental however and may not listen the best- but some have managed.
Gryphon anatomically resembles hawks, smaller eagles, and puma or bobcats. Though the species aren't one-to-one aesthetically pieces of the design influence their colors. They have feather-like "ears" like a Great Horned Owl which they use expressively to communicate silently to one another. They have sharp beaks and teeth- though like other birds they lack the ability to chew so they swallow food in whole chunks.
Their diet mainly consists of but is not limited to small mammals such as deer, sheep, or with group efforts Elk or Bovine. They have also been known to eat fish, insects, birds, turkey and in rare instances they may brave going after wild hog.

At the start of a long Interval, a virulent disease breaks out among dragonkin. While three of every four infected whers eventually recover, the disease is fatal for dragons and flits without exception. Highly contagious and able to be carried between dragonkin by humans too, quarantine is entirely ineffective. It soon becomes clear that dragons will imminently go extinct, and a radical plan is devised to avert this. Three gravid queens will go forward in time, laying there eggs in a time when, it is hoped, the disease will have died out.
With eggs on the sands, people of all walks of life flock to Nerat to get a chance at the eggs, for better or worse. What final chance with the eggs give the world? It's just a matter of time to find out, when the eggs hatch...
Features
Follows the revival of the dragon population from scratch
Six non-canon dragon ranks with more to come
Two non-canon firelizard subspecies
 No sexuality-based impression
All female dragonkin able to clutch
A strong emphasis on wher handlers
Playable wild/unbonded whers
Several upcoming dragon and wher hatchings

My problem with AIVAS is that it’s not NECESSARY
The pernese don’t need deus ex AI, they’ve spent the last decade plus rediscovering their ancient history all on their own. And yeah, it speeds things up a bit to have a machine that magically tells everyone exactly what they need to know and do, but tons of other things could serve that purpose.
Imagine how much more fun it would be if the history of the first crossing and Landing was discovered when someone saw the murals painted at Honshu, and microbiology info was hidden in Wind Blossom’s labs at Fort, and a normal old computer with some files detailing the plan to move the red star was uncovered, along with Emily Boll’s desktop photo of her family.
Imagine the awe and eeriness of the pernese learning exactly what they need to know while touching tbe artifacts of their ancestors! But instead we get AIVAS rolling out lists of bland facts and taking the fun out of everything

“spank” for the wip guessing game 👀
"Spank me once, shame on you," Jason quips, wiping blood from the split in his lip, smearing red across the lecherous pull of them. Blood stains his teeth as he snarls and Dick isn't sure he's ever seen someone look so beautiful despite being beaten and bruised and biting.
Dick's gaze dips before shooting back up to catch Jason's gaze, but he's already given himself away. Jason latches onto him, digging metaphorical teeth into skin as he goads Dick with a drawled taunt, "Spank me twice, shame on me."
He's pretty sure that's not how the old saying goes, but he supposes that's neither here nor there at the moment.
"Is that why you came back?" Dick asks, steeling himself against the temptation Jason makes of himself. "To get spanked?"
Jason raises his chin, haughty as he huffs a rough laugh and sneers, "Yeah, hit me harder."

[OC] Ghasht, the Weyr deity of the Hunt is a typically neutral creature that upholds the good hunt. Those who hunt with the intention for sport or waste, those who seek to do only harm are in turn hunted by Ghasht who takes the visage of the defiled corpses.
Little bit more info under read more.
Saturday warmup- needing to draw more OC's! Ghasht is a fun deity to try to figure out- lots of grey areas with her considering what would be a "good" hunt or not. She likely came to be during the end of the Moth Plague when food was the scarcest; reminding those to not waste a kill and punishing those who wasted during a time of much needed coopoeration and sharing of resources. I haven't fully decided how deity come to be and when yet- but playing around with it!

So, if it isn’t obvious, I draw a LOT of Dragonriders of Pern stuff. After getting TONS of template/base requests in commissions, I sort of burnt out doing them.
As a compromise I have a store full of DRoP bases!
I have others planned, but I only make them when I have the time and headspace.

For your birthday ask…
Anything pern + food especially separate regional cultures!
Crom Hold, High Reaches Hold, and Telgar Weyr have the heartiest stews you will ever eat in your life. They're the farthest north, and up in the mountains, they need shit that is going to stick to your ribs so fast there won't be space for cold to creep in.
Southern Boll, Keroon, Nerat, the whole of Ista, all have what we would recognize as forms of barbecue.
Everywhere southerly of Fort Hold and the line across from it has ducks and other waterfowl, and is about the only place you see food made from them and their eggs outside of Lords' tables. They actually do fairly well if they get stuck out in Fall, and will eat the shit out of drowned Thread if they get the chance.
If you start at the tip of the Fort Peninsula and work your way north up the inner edge, then along the mountains in the north, and back south towards Igen Hold and its coasts, almost none of these fuckers eat horse. This is purely due to Ruathan influence and the use of horses as transportation and a status symbol. This isn't the case, however, with Ista, the tip of that little peninsula by Keroon Bay, or Crom Hold. Humans don't eat horses in Crom Hold, but they're considered special occasion food for whers and Crom breeds it's own horses specifically for wher consumption.
As a result of the above, dragons from Fort, Telgar, and Igen Weyrs don't eat horse either, but those from the other Weyrs do.
Llamas are common in the Western part of the Northern continent, and are used for fiber and meat. Everywhere east of that big chunk of mountains however, you more commonly see sheep filling that role alongside dairy production.
Best known for betting, Bitra Hold is also the quail capital of Pern. You can find people keeping quail in that whole region from Bitra to Lemos to Keroon to Benden Hold, with the loss of pigeons they seem to have filled the 'fanciers' and 'racers' role in these areas, but it's in Bitra that you will find the greatest number and variety, as well as the greatest variety of recipes.
The Nerat Peninsula has a history of eating firelizard eggs. They didn't know the eggs they harvested en masse each year were from Northern Firelizards, but they were. Popularity dropped substantially after the rediscovery of firelizards as a species, but as they became more commonplace and people started finding their greens clutching in the laundry, well. Flit eggs are back on the menu, boys. The Nerat Peninsula is actually the only place on the Northern Continent you can find wild firelizard populations, and the fact they remained myth for so long is generally attributed to clutching out fewer rankers and having better camouflage than any of the Southern species.
