Many men had offered her many things in the past, love and friendship, luxury and jewels, entertainment, dogs, amusements, homage--some she had accepted, some refused, but no man before had offered her work. Peter had offered her that, he had offered her a share of his--not noble or inspiring or fascinating work, just his work, what he had. He had offered it her, called her great energies into play, and set her to work beside himself in a furrow. And she was glad; for some reason she found it very good.

A message to all the assorted unscrupulous undead: Beware the Ides of March.
To everyone else: Grab your kukri blades, your bowie knives, your stakes, your bone saws, and whatever else you have on hand to appropriately accessorize with your new copy of The Vampyres.
The book is out! Loose! Running rampant and bloodstained through the terrains of eBook and paperback alike!
My beautiful little baby, toddling into the literary world to deliver havoc unto the dastardly bastards of the revenant realm. I’m so proud. (And so happy to feel the stress headache finally start to crack.)
Now that The Vampyres is out in the open, a brief FAQ under the cut:
Where can I get the eBook?
Check out the Universal Book Link (UBL) here:
It’ll show you all the places you can grab a virtual vampyre by the throat.
Where can I get the paperback?
For folks in ‘murrica, I’d say hit up Bookshop.org to go and grab it from your physical store of choice:
You can also just search The Vampyres C.R. Kane and see the waterfall of options. Not sure of the exact timeline, but it should be more widely available in the coming weeks. At least hereabouts:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured: Places to potentially purchase a paperback.
Can I get it at my library?
If you ask for it, yes! You’ll need the ISBNs when filling out your library’s request form, so:
eBook ISBN: 9798218374594
Paperback ISBN: 9798218374587
What’s the status on that paperback cover business?
Current status is still ???
At least in the sense that I’m not sure what version of the book cover you might get at the moment. Original matte? Temporary glossy? Updated matte that’s here to stay? No idea at the moment. My self-publishing page shows the update’s confirmed, but the online stores are still using the first version as the preview image and I’m not sure when that gets swapped out. At least the books are all print-on-demand, so whatever you order, just know it’s not coming from some thrown-away backup heap. It’s fresh from the book oven press.
Anything else I need to know?
First, reviews are extremely welcome! I am running on negative budget when it comes to waving my little flag to announce that I Made a Scary Vampire Book, so I’m really relying on word-of-mouth if I want it to actually get its head above water. Leaving stars and comments wherever you can, be it in the online stores, the Goodreadses or Smashwordses or whatever else, would be a big help.
(Really though, I can and will dissolve into a puddle of relieved ego if I see so much as one (1) Nice Comment on Tumblr, my cesspool of choice.*)
*This is not hyperbole. I can count on one hand how many PROMOTION © ™ posts I’ve made on Twitter and have fingers left over. This novella is tailored to my fellow fiendish bookworms on here.
Second, to those coming by this stuff for the first time and don’t know what all this hoopla is about, a preview of my novella, The Vampyres, is available on my website. Give it a gander if you want to see under-appreciated classic supernatural bogeymen dropped into their own horror story.
Thirdly, lastly, vitally: thank you.
The Vampyres is a beautiful accident that came together out of an itch to rattle something out just for myself; a break from a bloated piece that had turned into a chore which burned me out and threw away the fun of scribbling. A lightweight read that saved me from being crushed by a cinderblock.
By the same token, the people on here have shouldered me up and out of the creative pit of thinking ‘This is all for nothing.’ For all that I talk of how much I’m powered by spite and the desire to Read a Specific Thing only to realize I Have to Write That Thing First, I’d be a liar if I said the kindness and excitement of the folks who’ve been reading my nonsense for (holy hell) TWO YEARS in the wake of the first big Dracula Daily surge didn’t have a major role in getting this thing done.
I did make The Vampyres for me. But it’s for you guys too. For everyone who saw one of my rambles or little fictions and spoke up to say, I love this! I was thinking this! I wanted this! Finally, finally!
When you crack open the cover for the first time, on a screen or in your hands, I want you to know I’m thinking Thank You at you. I hope you enjoy all the horrors inside.

Turning Red Defense Post
Tumblr media
It has come to my attention that some people think this blog is just me whining. I can see why those people think that, because it is true. I love to whine, and it is what I am good at. But there comes a time when one must venture out of her comfort zone.
In this post I am praising Turning Red, a movie that I like very much but that many other people seem to hate. My reasons for this are threefold. For one, I am running out of movies to complain about; two, I really like Turning Red; and three, my professor said I can’t just bitch about movies anymore, so my classic complaining style posts are hence extinct.
Before I get into my praise for the film, I want to address the common criticisms I have seen people make of it. I perused the one-star reviews on Google, and the most common complaints seemed to be “it’s cringe-worthy," “the characters were annoying," and “it has inappropriate themes.”
The reviews that said the movie was cringe-worthy mostly said so because of the main characters. The protagonist of the movie is a thirteen-year-old girl named Meilin Lee, whom many reviews had stated to be very annoying. I don’t know about anyone else, but when I was thirteen years old, I was absolutely insufferable. Cringe would be putting lightly how annoying I was. Comparably, I found Mei to be a sweet, if not dorky, tween with a similarly sympathetically dorky friend group. They were cringeworthy, but so is almost every thirteen-year-old out there, so really, the movie is just realistic.
Many reviews also found Mei Lin’s mother to be overbearing and weird, which I found to be true as well, but then that was kind of the point. Her mother is not the villain of the story by any means, but she is a flawed character. One of the most touching moments of the movie came in the form of Mei Lin helping her mother overcome those flaws. If her mother had been perfect from the start, we would have missed out on that moment.
Tumblr media
Aside from the characters, the negative reviews for this movie took offense to the “inappropriate” themes, namely the fact that periods were brought up and the fact that the protagonist rebels against her parents. The whole concept of Mei turning into a giant red panda is supposed to be a metaphor for puberty and growing up, and as it is such a huge part of puberty for girls, there was a quick mention of periods. This came in a very quick scene where Mei Lin’s mother brought out a stash of pads when she thought her daughter had gotten her period.
It was an extremely brief moment, but evidently, that was long enough to get some people upset. I was personally thrilled to see that periods were being brought up in a normal way, and I think it is a step in the right direction for this movie to have that scene. Some parents want to take the puberty talk at their own pace, but the mention of periods in this movie is brief and vague enough that most parents should be able to sweep it under the rug until they want to discuss it with their children.
As for Mei Lin rebelling against her parents, I am truthfully confused as to why this movie specifically is guilty of that message. Plenty of other Disney or Pixar movies have the main characters going against their parents. To name a few: The Little Mermaid, Brave, Mulan, and Pocahontas. I thought that Turning Red handled Mei Lin growing up and learning to be her own person very nicely, while still portraying her overbearing mother as sympathetic.
I can see why a lot of people don’t like this movie. It was risky, and it certainly was not made to please everyone, but I think much of the hate this movie gets is undeserved. I, and many others, really enjoyed Turning Red. Despite the plethora of negative reviews I read, there were more five-star reviews than one-star reviews by a good amount.
I do truly understand where the desire to loudly hate a movie comes from; I will crap on The Greatest Showman at any opportunity. But it is necessary to remember that the movies you hate may simply not have been written to please you. There are, for some reason, people out there who really like The Greatest Showman, despite the numerous reasons I have for reviling it. And there are people out there who hate Turning Red, even when I think it was one of the best Pixar movies made in some time.

____________________________________________________________
The marital bliss you experienced after wedding Anthony never did seem to fade.
You really had no doubt that your love developed ever more with each passing day.
As the sun rose over the horizon each new morning, you and your husband awoke slightly more enamored with one another than the night before.
Every time you shared a look, a touch, a kiss, it exponentially added to what you felt for him and what he felt for you.
Sharing that love was an easy feat when your son made his appearance in the world not even a full year into your marriage.
With him being the perfect combination of you and your husband, you counted your blessings every day for the gift that child was.
And a few years later, you soon had to start counting those blessings again when you fell pregnant once more.
This pregnancy was much the same as the last one.
With Anthony catering to your every whim like the dotting husband he was, time seemed nonexistent as you found yourself within your own little paradise. Before long, you were brought back to reality when it came time to call for a physician as your water broke in the early hours of the morning.
You were in labor well into the afternoon, but after bringing a daughter into the world, you could not help smiling as you peered down at the mere babe cradled within your arms.
You relaxed into your husband who sat next to you on the edge of the bed. He had been gently stroking the tiny curls on your baby’s head when he murmured out to you,
“What should we name her?”
Looking back at the newborn you held after taking a glance at Anthony, your grin was content as you said just as quietly,
“Well, we named the first one after your father.”
Anthony pressed a kiss onto your temple as if giving thanks before he replied while also gazing down at your new daughter.
“Then we shall name this one after your mother.”
You gave him your own kiss of thanks that was interrupted when you heard a knock on the door. It was briefly followed by the door opening to reveal your eldest and his nanny.
“Beg pardon, my Lord, but the child wanted to meet his newest sibling.”
Smiling, you both waved him in with open arms after dismissing the older woman.
At only a few months older than three years,  he was still a toddler who needed help climbing onto his parent's bed, and Anthony assisted in such.
Placing the boy on his lap, your husband encouragingly said to him,
“Come meet your new sister.”
You watched as your son began to move cautiously toward the baby you held while excitedly peering down at what was encompassed within those swaddling blankets.
As a little grin grew on his little face, his parents found it difficult to contain theirs.
You looked toward Anthony wearing that bright grin only to find it matched on his face when you made eye contact. You both went back to watching your children interact for the first time, and felt a peace settle over you at the realization that this was your family.
This was your hope.
This was your dream.
This was your heart.
And though you knew this was not the end to your story, you still could not help thinking that, in this moment, you had truly found your happily ever after and took great pleasure in rejoicing in it.

Kicking it Old School
Alright, so the (American) government being the asshole it is, they got mad that we did the things that we have written into the constitution, namely community organizing and using our right to free speech and assembly to voice decent to the existing genocide occurring in Palestine, opposing the misuse of our tax dollars to fund said genocide, and point out that while they can not be bothered to reach across the aisle on any other issue that would benefit Americans, namely utilizing those billions and in some case TRILLIONS of tax dollars to provide help to struggling people in our country, they could agree to attempt to silence the millions of voices across the nation for their use of a platform that was developed outside of the country because of a hypothetical fear that they manufactured of a foreign nation doing the thing that American made social media platforms (including big t that I'm posting from right now) are already doing. Even though the data is housed locally for American users by an American company. Even though the tenuous "fear" they have is that the parent company of Tiktok, Byte Dance, which is located in China, has no direct control over Tiktok itself, which is based in Singapore, an entirely separate country that the Chinese Government does not have sway over (Just a reminder for Senator Cotton, the ignorant racist who refused to listen to the information provided by the CEO of Tiktok, a Singaporian National).
So the manufactured fear has allowed them to oppose a vast network of community organization, with no real enforcement to be had, which is a not so polite reminder that VPN's exist, and can be used to evade all of this. But regardless, not everyone is going to be able to afford the VPN option, and there should be a free option for community organization. So here we are, coming back to our roots, the OG, the classic, rebirth of the 2010's era, the tumblr blog has returned. I deleted my original tumblr years ago. I'm a public person, to the point that my own home is highly visible, albeit a bit tedious to watch since the one space people can see in to is where I sleep and watch tv. But being that my content was always intended to be humerous, if a bit jaded and dark, I figure now is the time to use my extensive talents and creative skills start doing something that I've wanted to do for years. If this takes off, I might transition to a full time hosted blog, but I'm a fan of grass roots starting points, and truthfully, there's not much more grass roots than tumblr. Additionally, the tools and skills of the trade for podcasting are available to me as well, and I'm not opposed to it, since I already knowledgable in the creation, and I could easily do things with it. Who knows, maybe this is the start of my full time professional career, but who knows. Regardless, I'm going to list a few things you can expect from me on my page moving forward. - Anime content
LOOOOOVE me some Anime. I don't interact a ton with the fandoms, mostly because there are some super questionable and problematic ideas (ships) floating around the internet. That being the case, I'll mostly talk about the ones I love most, namely One Piece, because I live for the display of leftist rhetoric and dispensation of Justice and Joyboy Wonder that is Luffy and his crew.
-Politics
I'm more than a little comfortable discussing politics. I've been involved as a volunteer lobbyist in the past, and I engage with and regularly review content revolving around national and international politics, and I think it's important to not avoid discussing it. My takes will not always be perfect, but I generally center them around the ideas that people should always come before companies, and people can generally make decisions for themselves regarding self identity and bodily autonomy. Science will never be political to me, and regardless of my personal religious beliefs, science will make the decisions for me regarding health and wellness.
-Tea
I am a lover of all things tea. I have a talent I have developed for a while now, of making home brewed loose leaf tea, and I enjoy sharing that knowledge and information with others. Tea is very much a special interest for me, on par with One Piece and Minecraft. So you will definitely see stuff like tea recipes and resources from me regularly. I have for some time now had a dream of owning my own tea shop, and I will absolutely achieve that some day. And yes, my love of this stems from my love of Uncle Iroh.
-Cats and Animals in General
I have two cats, Shadow, who is pictured in my current PFP, and Poppie, the gremlin boy. I intend to someday have a service dog again, and when that happens, you will be introduced to said dog, but for now, it's me and my demons. I have this desire to have a small plot of land with a few farm animals to watch over, namely a few hens for eggs, maybe a mini-cow or some goats to produce fertilizer, but also I want live in the middle of the woods, so like, who knows how that will shake out. I'm a four seasons kind of person, and northern woods tend to have that. That is for the future to decide, but for now, it's just me and my cats.
-Lifestyle stuff
The category is broad, but includes all kinds of things. Home tech, cooking, discussions on queerness, and life tips and advice. I tend to write some of these from the perspective of me to my past self, telling things I wish I had known then that I know now.
-Music
Less focused on it's discussion, and more on presentation. I have a decently expansive taste, that only really excludes modern pop country, which I view as terrible. That said, old country, such as Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, and the like, are among some of my favorites. That said, I'm also a hiphop head, and I've been to more underground rap shows than any other type of live show. -Mental Health
I'm mentally ill. I have been diagnosed with three separate mental health disorders, as well as ADD, and although I have never been officially tested, I am more than likely on the Autism Spectrum. I have lived a rather colorful life full of interesting choices, and I was not always given the grace I needed to grow. So from time to time, I'll have things to say on mental health. I'm not one to answer questions for others about their own mental health, because I know this is something that needs to be handled by professionals, but I will always do my best to be up front and honest, because I hate the idea that the stigma of mental health problems would prevent someone from living a full life.
I am looking forward to this. If things on tiktok continue, I'm still going to try to be active on tumblr, because diversifying your engagement can be beneficial. If you want more info about me, check out my other pages, including my link tree.
Stay safe everyone.

The Mosley Review: Bullet Train
Tumblr media
You know when a film's trailer delivers a glimpse of the entire thing in a fun way? Its rare for a trailer to deliver the exact tone of a film so accurately isn't it? Well the team that designed the trailer to this film should win an Oscar for it because this film was everything it said it was gonna be and so much more. It is truly rare for a film to be this much fun and engaging from the opening montage to the closing credits. The action film genre can be a variety of things whether it be an action film that has a thin layered story with great set pieces or a great story that informs the set pieces and they work in tandem together. This film was the latter and I loved the story and all of its moving parts. It does take some influences from films like Snatch and Smokin’ Aces with the plot being centered around a person and object and it was great. There were multiple slivers of a family drama, dark comedy and revenge tale all mixed into this perfect storm of circumstance and luck. The characters themselves push the story and take you on a fun ride that you'll never forget. This film definitely features my favorite collection of characters this year so far.
Tumblr media
Brad Pitt was excellent and having the time of his life as the "unlucky" character Ladybug. You want the guy to succeed and get off the train, but there's always something or someone pulling him right back on. He was charming and hilarious as he tries to stay so Zen throughout the mayhem. Sandra Bullock was fun and witty as his handler Maria Beetle. The two of them have such great chemistry and I love their heart to hearts after and sometimes during the action. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Bryan Tyree Henry were truly my favorite characters of the film Tangerine and Lemon. Their chemistry was electric the moment they were on screen together. Their banter was the funniest, insightful, quick and you truly feel their brotherly love toward one another. Tangerine was the perfect bruiser and Lemon was truly the brains and I loved every second. I kind of want a spinoff with those characters. Joey King was perfectly sadistic and cunning as The Prince. She has such command on screen and you love her even though she is so evil. Andrew Koji was endearing and wonderful as Yuichi Kimura and his story was one of the strongest pillars of the film. The great Hiroyuki Sanada was as awesome and elegant as his father The Elder. There isn't a role he's played where he doesn't bring such gravitas to each scene. Their chemistry was strong and I loved their strained relationship. Michael Shannon was awesome and a pure rockstar as the Russian crime boss The White Death. Once he's on screen, you just love every villainous moment of him chewing the scenery. The way his story is tied to everyone is wonderfully weaved throughout and its one hell of a payoff in the end.
Tumblr media
The soundtrack in this film was excellent as we here the Japanese version of classic hits and they're all perfectly placed and compliment the tone of the story and emotional beats. The action in this film is perfectly choreographed to tell the story and deliver some great comedic moments and shocking twists. You have to appreciate when a director that comes from a stunt background, really shows how to shoot action the correct way. Visually the film is stunning and each train car has its own personality. Director David Leitch has made not only one of my favorite action films, but one of the best dark comedies of the year. I loved this film and I can't recommend it enough. Do stick around for one of the best story buttons in the mid credit scene that made myself and the entire theater cheer. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

Different? Better?
The adventure with the 1990s high end tube amp goes on.
There is good, and there is bad. Clearing away the bad issue is it will cost money to keep this beastie running. The good is it has the seductive sound of the vacuum to tempt and to tease me. Such a tease.
Last night I played 4 albums. The result was interesting.
The first one was my original copy of "I Robot" Alan Parson's Project. It sounded really good. AP was a recording engineer of great talent and is responsible for Dark Side of the Moon among many others. If you are familiar with that you can appreciate that the mixes are complex and deep and leave much to be untangled. If you are a detail geek as I am it is required listening. Lots of fun.
Next up was a "special" I found in my densely packed hoard of LPs. It is on the Wilson Audiophile label titled Center Stage.
Tumblr media
It has an amazing back story and provenance. It was commissioned by Absolute Sound Magazine and the recording engineers, and mastering gurus are a who's who of the high end. Everything custom and tweaked. They even note the tape preservative used. Yes tape and pure analog full on. Should be great right?
I know TAS used it to evaluate equipment and crown the winners of that month's SOTA awards.
I may have mentioned that you can have great music recorded well or poorly. You can have great recordings of good or poor music. Bad recordings of bad music stay in the bin where they belong. Some things are doomed to be test records and this is one of those.
In the full golden ear style of reviewing I will note my equipment. The Phase Linear 8000 series 2 tangential tracking TT with an AT7V cartridge front end. Preamp is the ARC SP-14 with 50 pf load on the phono, and the Amp is the ARC Classic 60. Speakers are my own "invisible speakers" bass reflex in lovely birch plywood cabinets.
The music was movie and Broadway tunes played by horns and woodwinds with percussion. Basically a symphony orchestra without any strings. There was good space and I am a full on fan of how drums are portrayed. They are big deep and with amazing texture. Horns let you show off lots of audiophile type tricks. But the music was BORING. After two cuts I could not help but think if I hear another John Williams tune I will throw up. No FN imagination just quotes of everyone from Brahms to Stravinsky.
This is big loud music, and I was falling asleep droogs. I played both sides and yes the technical production is full on high end, but this goes back in the heap for a long time. Just not fun.
Since I was bored I decided to pull up "Year of the Cat" Mofi which I have talked about before. Wonderful recording of the most boring singer in history. Now this was interesting.
With the Franken-Amp this is broad and front row and deep with really really good clear sound. With the tuber it was almost muffled. Mr Stewart was pushed back a few yards and there was fog or smoke around him. ( not literally just an audible fuzziness thing ) I could still hear it clearly and all the parts were sharp and good. The guitar was very nice and metallic. The treble was really good. This is a Mofi after all. But the perspective of the mix was far different. I was in full on WTF mode. I bet it was mixed in a studio with all Solid State gear.
Very different, but not better.
OK one more then I have to shut it down. Emmylou Harris "Quarter moon...." I just got a Mofi used record from a cool shop a 5 hour drive away. There was some groove noise like dirt, they said they had ultrasonically cleaned it. Under the noise the recording was very nice. Actually a bit of discwasher brushing cleaned it up noticeably. I suppose the mix is simpler and cleaner so the sound was as I recall it before no big changes.
One thing and I will come back to it again. There is a background singer with a really cool tone to her voice. She is there, but not as easy to separate out as I recall. That may be the mix as Mofi does fiddle it's masters, or it may be the tuber. I have the original vanilla disk right in the milk crate there. I will check it.
[ Update: I did check it next day. The original disc was much clearer and the other singer was very easy to distinguish and understand. So did Mofi remix it and mess it up a bit? Interesting that the old copy sounded just as good as the mofi. Old master tape copy perhaps?]
In a related thing I ordered a set of the driver tubes. (EHX Russian). Far cheaper than a full set of 6550s and likely 30 years old. I want to pull the covers for a peak and will throw those in. It is a lot of bother to do so. I need some things to do in there aside from look. I will also check the bias of the output tubes. I will also scope some capacitors on the PC board that can go funny. There are 4 electrolytics there that are not power supply related and are known to be vulnerable. Just to risk my life you know. I gave up motorcycles decades ago.
The Amp does help warm the room and there was frost on the car this morning.
Cheers to all.

Thoughts on Black Christmas (2019)
Uhh....brief mentions of sexual assault. Spoilers I guess ...it’s Black Christmas 2019 I don’t think anyone cares.
- I don’t know if I'm going to make a separate post comparing the three of the movies, I might end up saying everything I need to say  in this review.
- Once again, stop making remakes and sequels that have nothing to do with the original.
- That snow angle shot was actually pretty cool, I like it.
- This movie being set at christmas is just as arbitrary as the first one.
- Yeah, that diva cup thing was pretty awkward. Why did there have to be complete silence while she was putting it in? You couldn’t have used that time for dialogue?
- Oh hi Cary Elwes ….didn’t expect to see you here.
- God I fucking hate it when professors call on you even though you didn’t raise your hand.
- Also they make Cary’s character so fucking creepy that the first time I saw this I he  assaulted Riley.
- “He totally went off on me because I asked why there were no women, or people of color, or queer people on the syllabus.” Yeah that is weird, most classics lists i’ve seen for colleges, even in 2019, at least have like Frankenstein or a book by one of the Bronte sisters. You have to be trying to not have a woman on the list. (Also: I don’t think they ever mentioned any of their majors? I feel like that would have been a good thing for character building, at least for Riley)
- Yes, Riley does need to take back her agency and learn how to live her life again, but I don’t think getting up on stage to sing and dance about what is probably one of the most traumatic experiences her life, in front of the person who assualted her, is really the healthiest or safest way to do that.
- Also, am I the only one that thinks Kris petitioning to get the bust removed from the main hall and that actually happening sounds weird? Maybe it’s just because I went to community college so I don’t know how larger, more established colleges work but that sounds like she was probably petitioning to get the name of the school changed and they just did the bust thing as a ‘compromise’.
- What did they steal for Kris for the pledges to know that she had to be killed too?
- Nate, dude, I know you have a migraine or whatever but just leave the room or something.
- I feel like a lot of real world discussions about feminism and equal rights end up like the one that happened in the kitchen so I think maybe this needs to be said: We do need men in the world, however what we don’t need is bigots and abusers. Misogyny negatively effects all of us, you can talk about the issues men face without having to put down women.
- I find it really odd that this movie claims to be a more ‘feminist’ version of Black Christmas (I have no idea if the director or writer intended that, maybe it was just a studio or marketing team thing) but they cut out the women’s reproductive rights subplot? How do you even do that?
- I kind of wish this movie was a full on psychological thriller of Riley having to actually process her trauma instead of being a qausi-slasher movie.
- Referencing the point above, I feel like the ending is in this weird limbo where it’s not weird enough to clearly be an allegory but it’s also not normal enough to be like, believable.
- Was Riley’s smile fading at the end because one (or some of them) got out alive or because she realizes that she just destroyed half of the evidence that proves she and Kris didn’t kill all those people?
- Do I think this movie is misandrist propaganda? No. Do I think this movie is great and everyone should see  it? also No. I think its a movie that tried to do something good but fumbled and wound up in a no woman’s land of cringe dialogue and ham fisted morals.
- also in case anyone was wondering, my favourite character was Jessie, she reminds me of one of my cousins.

Do you think Disney should go back to re-releasing their animated movies for limited theatrical releases in 3D again Rather than making these live action remakes / reboots? How do you feel about those (the live action stuff)? I honestly think it's bad (imagine if they made a live action Hercules movie). At least the 3D thing was a fun gimmick and actually got people in seats.
Totally! They need to take some of those classic movies out of the Disney vault lol! I’d love to see Cinderella and Mulan and Hercules back in theaters! I know during the summer some movies theaters will play kids movies that have already been released for summer camps that visit and stuff like that (at least where I live they do lol) , but you don’t really see them playing Disney movies unless they’re new releases. It’s usually movies from different studios like Universal or Dreamworks.
I’m not the biggest fan of the live action reboots tbh. Disney honestly needs to go back to releasing original movies. I feel like Pixar’s the only one making original movies (and sequels) at this point and they’re doing quite well, like everyone thought Elemental was gonna be a flop, but it actually turned out to be a good movie and did well in the box office. Like, look at the live action Snow White that’s coming out, though. Haven’t heard the greatest things about it and it hasn’t even been released yet, so I guess that’s not a good sign. Personally, I feel like the only good live action reboots were The Jungle Book and Cinderella and those were made back in the mid to late 2010s. I haven’t really seen any other ones besides those only because they just didn’t look very good and I’ve heard they aren’t very good either, but maybe I’m wrong. Like, even the Little Mermaid reboot wasn’t the best, I heard it was okay, but not great. But I haven’t seen that one yet, so yeah lol. I guess I’ll have to find the time to watch the reboots on Disney+ lol (though, tbh they don’t really interest me so idk if I actually will unless they REALLY interest me lol, like I’d be up to watching the Beauty & the Beast reboot but not the Pinocchio one because omg I’ve seen clips and reviews and it is…so bad, also I don’t really like the original Pinocchio movie, it scared me as a kid lol). I’ve heard different opinions on different live action movies, so I totally respect you if you have a different opinion from mine, like, if you liked the live action Dumbo movie, then that’s cool. You do you, y’know? But to me, the movie just didn’t look that good (even though it had the great Danny Devito aka Philoctetes in it lol).
And yeah, I honestly wasn’t big on the 3D animated movies at first either, but now that Disney’s basically only making live action reboots at this point, I’d love to see anything animated lol. Like give us a Frozen 3. I’ll take it if it means no more live action reboots 😂 but I really do miss their 2D animated movies and I wish they start making those again, but I suppose it’ll be a while since there an actor’s and writer’s strike going on and 2D animated movies take a lot more time and work and people than it does with a 3D animated movie (which I guess is why they were making those so much).
But oooooooh, honey…have I got news for you…there is definitely a live action Hercules in the works and I’m scared about it lol. I believe it’s gonna be made by the same directors that made Marvel’s Infinity Wars (or maybe it was Endgame? I don’t remember lol) and the worst part….they said the movie’s gonna be inspired by TikTok….FREAKING TIKTOK OF ALL THINGS LIKE??? What do they even mean by that??? It’s a social media app??? Like is the movie gonna be made with 1 minute clips of people doing little dances in their living room or something???
I’m trying to stay positive about the whole thing, but oh man do they make it difficult lol. I think they’re also going to cast Ariana Grande as Meg and idk if that’s the best casting decision. That’s just me though, idk. I mean, her rendition of I Won’t Say I’m In Love was okay, but I wouldn’t go as far as making her Meg in a movie. I only know her acting from Victorious and Hairspray Live and those were okay too, so I guess what I’m trying to say is that Ariana Grande is an okay singer and actress, but like I said, I wouldn’t go as far as making her Meg. I think, like pretty much every movie in Hollywood at this point, they’re just putting her in the movie just because she’s a famous celebrity and her name has enough value to get people to see the movie, but maybe I’m wrong. I dunno if her being Meg is actually official, though, most of the info we have for the movie (mainly casting) is just rumors and speculation, so maybe they won’t go with Ariana and they’ll actually go with some new talent (which is very much needed and I’d love to see it as someone who is dreaming of breaking into the acting business one day, I’m so tired of seeing studios hire celebrities for everything, like it’s okay to audition people and look for new actors, my dudes), but yeah. I guess we’ll see how the movie plays out in the future.

Note
My critique partner's debut went live on the ARC sites recently and it's getting absolutely slammed by reviewers. Do you have any advice for how to be a good writer friend when this happens?
Sometimes if a book I love gets a lousy review, I look up MY FAVORITE all time books. Classics, like Where the Wild Things Are or something. Books that WE KNOW are great. I read those one-star reviews. And I realize - you can't please everyone, and lots of people are just plain wrong AND stupid. And the more people you reach, the more likely it is that stupid wrong people will get into your orbit. And Maurice Sendak did not give two f**ks if Norman Q from Oklahoma City thought the Wild Things were satanic. He would have laughed, I'm certain. The more of these you read, the funnier they get, and that helps me put this nonsense into perspective.
Anyway. On to your question. So you, as a friend, can, of course, write a NICE review to counter-act the negative ones, and enlist other people who have read and liked the book to do so. After all -- if YOU like the book, and other people liked the book enough to want to acquire and publish it, presumably it's NOT hot garbáge, so surely there are people who will want to say nice things!
And if any reviews truly are just dog piling / bashing the author / bullying or something like that, report them if there is a way to do so. Like I've had situations a couple times where an extreme right-wing pastor or somebody talked about one of my books, and sent all their minions to flood us with bad reviews, and we were able to report and get the most egregious ones where they clearly hadn't even LOOKED at the book taken down.
Meanwhile, if your friend wants to vent, let them do that -- but also gently let them know it's a limited time event. You can and should be compassionate, but you can't really be expected to hear endless complaints about this for the next however-long, that's not fair to you, and certainly unhealthy for them. I'd propose something like, "How about we have a friends weekend where stay OFF the internet, eat ice cream and drink margaritas, go to a scream room or whatever, ceremonially block all review sites together, then go to a spa and emerge refreshed, relaxed, and ready for a fresh start."
It's like a breakup or something, IMO - yes absolutely they should punch that pillow, get those feelings out, do some self-care -- but then they just have to pull their pants up and move forward, they can't wallow around indefinitely.
The thing is, reviews aren't FOR authors. If you are a thin-skinned person, as many authors are, you should not be looking at them AT ALL, actually (and it shouldn't need to be said, but you FOR SURE should NEVER respond to them!!!) - If I were an author, I would block those sites like they are X-Rated and I'm both a sheltered child AND a helicopter parent.
I know authors who get stressed and upset or obsessed when there is ONE slightly negative line in an otherwise glowing review -- they don't see the glowing part at all, they can only see the negative shining like a beacon -- so of course, actually-lousy reviews really suck to get.
However. There's an upside . . . which is hard to believe if you are in a bad head-space, but is actually true . . .
If you are getting reviews... positive or negative... that means you are getting READ, and people are invested enough to actually say something. Most books actually DON'T get read, or nobody cares enough to review them. So if your book is getting read AND provoking an emotional response from people, enough so that they are moved to actually write a review, that's actually better than nobody even looking at it at all. Because one person's 'ick' is another person's favorite thing. And your book is much more likely to find THOSE people if it is actually out there, circulating and being talked about. Reaching those readers is what it's all about.

A good day to all of you,
After an exciting end to the preliminary round, we arrive at the true business end for 2022's Movie Odyssey Award for Best Original Song (MOABOS). This is tenth annual edition of MOABOS on this blog, as many of you know, and the ninth with participation from family, friends, and tumblr followers. If you asked me back in 2013 how long this would run, I would never have imagined five editions, let alone ten.
Record-keeping for this year's edition began when I saw All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989) on January 2, 2022. Somehow, that one song I picked out in that movie has survived the entire year to get to this point. Over the rest of 2022, numerous songs from various movies filtered in and out on my master shortlist, culminating into this final round.
INTRODUCTION
For those who have never participated in this before, my classic movie blog traditionally ends the year by honoring some of the best achievements from movies that I saw for the first time that calendar year (the "Movie Odyssey", in which any rewatches do not count) withan Oscar-like ceremony. I choose all the nominees and winners from each category except for this, Best Original Song. Original Song is the only category which does not require you to watch several movies in their entirety. As always, MOABOS is considered a sort of cinematic-musical thank-you for your moral support in various ways over how long I've known you for. In addition, I think it's a fun way to introduce to all of you films and music you may not have otherwise encountered or sought and to give everyone a dose of film and music history. MOABOS is but a foot-deep glimpse into my Movie Odyssey for this last year.
This final will be contested by fifteen songs. But it should (and still could be, unless I can't find it by January 1) be sixteen. Absent from the final round due to the fact I cannot find any video or audio on it is "Nous sommes seuls dans la forêt (We Are Alone in the Forest)” from 1930's Le Million. Unless I (or someone else) can find a video or audio clip of before January 1, this song will have to be considered an honorable mention. One online movie reviewer had a YouTube link to this song, but unfortunately it ran afoul of the Criterion Collection (who handle the film's distribution in North America) some time ago.
COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc on the film industry. And as such, for the second straight year running, there are zero original songs from movies released this calendar year (I know, some of you are wondering why I didn't see the Top Gun sequel, and that's because I haven't seen the original). There was one entry from 2021 in this year's preliminary, but it was barely eliminated.
Also reflective of how personally difficult this year has been for me, this is a monolingual field for the final. That is a MOABOS first. I've said how much I find this distasteful, that I have no French chansons, Japanese anime songs, Viet Film Fest finds, Indian cinema discoveries (I refuse to watch RRR in any language other than the original Telugu and certainly not the Hindi dub on Netflix), or anything else found their way into the mix. Tracking down a significant amount of non-English language movies I see every year requires a certain amount of effort and time, and I wasn't able to do that as much as I'd like this 2022.
For this year's final, an MGM musical makes a MOABOS bow for the first time since 2017, with one the studio's more iconic songs (albeit not in the form of its most famous rendition). Doris Day, Warner Bros.' principal musical actress in the 1940s and '50s, was featured heavily in last year's edition, but did not end up in the top ten, She returns with three songs in the final this year. This ties a record for a performer - shared by Prince who had three songs for Purple Rain in 2018 and Elvis for three songs in Blue Hawaii and Frankie and Johnny in 2020).
Animation fans might raise their eyebrows with the sort-of rekindling of a rivalry: Disney (with The Rescuers and Oliver & Company) v. Don Bluth (All Dogs Go to Heaven). Meanwhile, the ageless Harry Belafonte makes the final on his MOABOS debut. As does the incredible Alice Faye (who is here twice over for The Gang's All Here). It's shaping up to be an interesting final!
2022's winner will join this company:
2021: “Lullaby in Ragtime” , The Five Pennies (1959) 2020: “Can't Help Falling in Love” , Blue Hawaii (1961) 2019: “I Wish I Didn't Love You So”, The Perils of Pauline (1947) 2018: “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing”, Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955) 2017: “Remember Me (Recuérdame)”, Coco (2017) 2016: “Stayin’ Alive”, Saturday Night Fever (1977) 2015: “Amhrán Na Farraige”, Song of the Sea (2014) 2014: “Rainbow Connection”, The Muppet Movie (1979) 2013: “The Gold Diggers’ Song (We’re In the Money)”,Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)
INSTRUCTIONS
Please rank (#1-15) your choices in order. The top ten songs will receive nominations; all others get "Honorable Mentions". There is no minimum or maximum amount of songs you can rank, but because of the nature of single transferable vote, it is highly recommended to rank as many songs as possible, rather than only one or two. Those who rank fewer songs run a greater risk of their ballots being discarded in the later rounds of tabulation. Again, this is all described in the "read more".
Please consider to the best of your ability (these are only suggestions, not strict guidelines):
How musically interesting the song is (incl. and not limited to musical phrasing and orchestration);
Its lyrics;
Context within the film (contextual blurbs provided for every entry for those who haven't seen the films);
Choreography/dance direction (if applicable);
The song's cultural impact and context/sociopolitical context/life outside the film (if applicable, and, in my opinion, least important factor)
Because of the difficulty to find clean recordings of much of this music, imperfections in audio and video quality may not be used against any song. You are highly encouraged to send in comments and reactions with your rankings - it makes the process more enjoyable for you and myself!
The tabulation method used in the preliminary round (10 points for 1st place, 9 points for 2nd, etc.) is being used for this round. But is used for the final only as the second tiebreaker (the tabulation method that will be used principally for the final – aka "single transferable vote" – is described in the "read more").
The deadline for submission is Saturday, January 7 Sunday, January 15 at 7 PM Pacific Time. That is 5 PM Hawaii/Aleutian Time and 9 PM Central Time / 10 PM Eastern. That deadline is also Monday, January 16 at 3 AM GMT / 4 AM CET / 5 AM EET / 8 AM Pakistan Standard Time / 8:30 AM Indian Standard Time. This deadline – and I really hope we don't have to do this – will be pushed back if there are a large number of people who have not submitted in time.
All of the below songs can also be found in this YouTube playlist (but please note you may not judge the music video of "9 to 5", you must judge the song and how it is used in context).
Enjoy the music! Feel free to listen as many times as you need, and I hope you discover music and movies you may have never otherwise heard of that you find fascinating. The following is formatted... ("Song title", composer and lyricist, film title):
2022 MOVIE ODYSSEY AWARD FOR BEST ORIGINAL SONG – FINAL ROUND
“Good Morning”, music by Nacio Herb Brown, lyrics by Arthur Freed, Babes in Arms (1939)
Performed by Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney
4th in Group A
This song appears early in the first Judy Garland-Mickey Rooney musical of several (the two had previously appeared together in the fourth film of the Andy Hardy series) for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). Here, two vaudeville kids from different families – "Mickey" Moran (Rooney) and Patsy Barton (Garland) – are attempting to sell one of his songs to a musical publishing company. Babes in Arms was released a month after Garland starred in The Wizard of Oz.
If this song sounds familiar, it's because its most famous use was when it was recycled for Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Connor during Singin' in the Rain (1952) – a movie that recycled many MGM songs to immaculate results (MGM liked to recycle its songs multiple times for some of its musicals).
“I’ll Never Stop Loving You”, music by Nicholas Brodszky, lyrics by Sammy Cahn, Love Me or Leave Me (1955)
Performed by Doris Day
2nd in Group B
(use in film) / (single version)
Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song
Ruth Etting (Day) has left the rough-and-tumble Chicago nightclub scene, thanks to her gangster boyfriend Martin Snyder (James Cagney). Ruth wants to break into the recording industry and, early on that journey, partakes in this early rehearsal with singing coach Johnny Alderman (Cameron Mitchell; whose character falls for Day's).
“Island in the Sun”, music and lyrics by Harry Belafonte and Irving Burgie, Island in the Sun (1957)
Performed by Harry Belafonte
5th in Group A
Played over the opening credits of this romantic drama, complete with aerial footage of the island where the film takes place. Set on a fictional Caribbean island (and shot on location in Barbados and Grenada), Island in the Sun was controversial when it was first released due to its depiction of interracial relationships, adultery, and colonial politics.
Jamaican-American singer and actor Harry Belafonte introduced calypso music to American audiences in the 1950s. The genre, originating in Trinidad and Tobago in the 18th century, is influenced by the storytelling tradition of West African griots and often employs a syncopated 2/4 beat derived from West African musical beats. Calypso is a precursor to ska and reggae.
“Johnny Guitar”, music by Victor Young, lyrics by Peggy Lee, Johnny Guitar (1954)
Performed by Peggy Lee
Advanced directly to the final
Appears in the transition into the end credits of this proto-feminist Western. Victor Young's melody is the centerpiece to his score to this movie, and it is heard throughout. Joan Crawford plays Vienna, a saloonkeeper who has a tumultuous relationship with the locals because of her support for a local railroad project. The locals, led by hotheaded Emma (Mercedes McCambridge) find a pretext to run Vienna out of town for good, but not before the mysterious Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden) shows up in town. The film was received cooly upon release, but time has elevated its reputation.
I know certain folks who have played Fallout: New Vegas are going to have a hard time setting aside their animosity for this song, but alas. “Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.”
“A Journey to a Star”, music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Leo Robin, The Gang's All Here (1943)
Performed by Alice Faye; reprised by film's cast
5th in Group B
(initial performance) / (reprise)
Onboard a ship bound a destination to, erm, somewhere, onboard entertainer Eadie Allen (Alice Faye) starts falling with Andy Mason (James Ellison), who is shortly about to report for duty in the South Pacific. The reprise occurs as a film-ending fantasia, complete with Busby Berkeley's oftentimes kaleidoscopic mass choreography, which he popularized in the 1930s (although they were already out-of-fashion by the time he made The Gang's All Here).
In the days of Old Hollywood, key cast and crewmembers were contracted specifically to the major studios. Some of the major studios had their signature musical stars. Among musical actresses? Judy Garland was contracted to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM); Doris Day to Warner Bros; Deanna Durbin for Universal; Ginger Rogers for RKO while partnering with Fred Astaire. Until her being blackballed for a perceived breach of contract, it was Alice Faye who was 20th Century Fox's principal musical actress (she was supplanted by close friend Betty Grable). Faye makes her MOABOS debut, and it won't be the last time we see her.
“A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow”, music and lyrics by Michael McKean and Annette O'Toole, A Mighty Wind (2003)
Performed by Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara
Advanced directly to the final
(use in film) / (soundtrack version)
Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song
Christopher Guest's A Mighty Wind is a comedic mockumentary about a folk music reunion that sees three acts reunited for a send-off public TV special. Levy and O'Hara are Mitch & Mickey – once a married couple, but long separated after Mitch had a mental breakdown and never recovered. Mitch is seen having difficulty communicating and concentrating throughout the film, except when playing music. This song is heard in bits and pieces through the film until finally played in its entirety in this final scene. If you like this, I highly recommend watching Levy and O’Hara’s Oscar performance of this song (in character, to boot).
"I know this song. This is that really pretty one." – you better know this one Michael McKean, as you're the one who co-wrote it! Yes, the tall blonde lady is Jane Lynch
“Love Survives”, music and lyrics by Al Kasha, Joel Hirschhorn, Mike Curb, and Michael Lloyd, All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989)
Performed by Irene Cara and Freddie Jackson
3rd in Group B
“Love Survives” appears as the first song in the end credits of this animated musical fantasy directed by Don Bluth (1986's An American Tail, 1988's The Land Before Time). To preempt your questions about the YouTube comments in the provided link, it should be noted that this song was dedicated to voice actress Judith Barsi – who plays the human protagonist, Anne-Marie, in this movie (and Ducky in the original Land Before Time) – after she and her mother were both murdered by her father before this film was released.
“A Mighty Wind”, music and lyrics by Eugene Levy, Christopher Guest, and Michael McKean, A Mighty Wind (2003)
Performed by The Folksmen (Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer); Mitch & Mickey (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara); and The New Main Street Singers (John Michael Higgins, Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, Christopher Moynihan, David Blasucci, Mark Nonisa, Steve Pandis, and Patrick Sauber)
6th in Group B
The son (Bob Balaban) of an acclaimed folk music producer tries to put together a memorial concert on public TV to honor his late father, asking the three most famous of his father's acts to participate. After some drama among all three groups, they all come together for the concert, with this number concluding the occasion.
The video provided is from the public television alternative print that was offered as a DVD extra, not how this scene was shot in the movie. I have decided to provide the public TV alternative because the original is not available on YouTube (and also because the public TV version mirrors closely how it was shot in the film).
No apologies for that dirty lyric.
“Never Look Back”, music and lyrics by Chilton Price, Love Me or Leave Me (1955)
Performed by Doris Day
2nd in Group A
Ruth Etting (Day) has left the rough-and-tumble Chicago nightclub scene, thanks to her gangster (and now ex-) boyfriend Martin Snyder (James Cagney in one of his final gangster roles). At this point, Ruth has made it in the recording industry and is now recording a song for a Hollywood movie she just starred in. A jealous Martin watches on in the recording booth.
“9 to 5” , music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, Nine to Five (1980)
Performed by Dolly Parton
Advanced directly to the final
Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song
This song is performed over the opening credits to this workplace revenge comedy starring Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dabney Coleman as the three leads' chauvinist boss. “9 to 5” represented Parton's breakthrough into pop music, having previously only been known as a country music star.
NOTE: the above link takes you to a clip of the opening credits. The provided YouTube playlist only has the music video (remember you are judging the song and its use in context, not a music video).
“No Love, No Nothin'”, music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Leo Robin, The Gang's All Here (1943)
Performed by Alice Faye
3rd in Group A
A dinner-and-a-show club is in dress rehearsal for their newest show and, more urgently, a war bond party. Eadie Allen (Alice Faye) is the performer here, with U.S. Army servicemember Andy Mason Jr. (James Ellison; whose character is on a furlough) among the few people permitted to preview the performance. Andy and Eadie had a chance encounter a few years back, with the two clearly interested in each other but nothing transpiring.
“Nous sommes seuls dans la forêt (We Are Alone in the Forest)”, music and lyrics by Armand Bernard, Philippe Parès, and Georges Van Parys, Le Million (1931, France)
This entry is a placeholder. Do not rank unless I find the audio/video to this online somewhere. If I cannot find a video/audio clip by January 1, this song will be considered an "Honorable Mention".
Performed by Constantin Siroesco and Odette Talazac
Lyrics in French
Siroesco and Talazac are two operatic singers at a stage show that is almost interrupted by the heavily indebted Michel (René Lefèvre) and fiancée, Beatrice (Annabella). Michel has won the lottery, but he has misplaced his winning ticket in his jacket. Michel's pursuit of the jacket has taken him to this theater, where he and Beatrice run out on stage at the worst possible time. They crouch behind some scenery, while this song - reflective of their relationship - plays.
“Pillow Talk”, music and lyrics by Buddy Pepper and Inez James, Pillow Talk (1959)
Performed by Doris Day
6th in Group A
This is the title song – played over the opening credits – to this romantic comedy starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson.
This was the first of three groundbreaking romcoms (an informal trilogy) starring Day and Hudson. Tony Randall also starred in all three of these movies in supporting roles. Along with Lover Come Back (1961) and Send Me No Flowers (1964), Pillow Talk was considered risqué for the time and helped to contribute to the demise of the Hays Code (a series of self-censorship guidelines for almost all major Hollywood movies released from 1934-1968). For the classic film buffs out there, Pillow Talk is like a pre-Code picture that just happened to show up in the late '50s.
“Someone's Waiting for You”, music by Sammy Fain, lyrics by Carol Connors and Ayn Robbins, The Rescuers (1977)
Performed by Shelby Flint
1st in Group A
Six-year-old orphan Penny (Michelle Stacy) has been kidnapped by the greedy Madame Medusa (Geraldine Page). Medusa has imprisoned Penny in a Louisiana bayou. But the resourceful Penny has sent a message in a bottle that has been received by the Rescue Aid Society, an international mouse organization housed in the U.N. in New York. This song plays non-diegetically as our two mice heroes, Bernard and Ms. Bianca (Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor), arrive.
“Tomorrow is the Song I Sing”, music by Jerry Goldsmith, lyrics by Richard Gillis, The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970)
Performed by Richard Gillis
4th in Group B
Thumbnail image is slightly NSFW
In this American Western film's opening minutes, Cable Hogue (Jason Robards) has been abandoned in the desert by his two companions. He wanders the Arizona desert, speaking in a folksy demeanor to no one but God as if trying to bargain over his desperate situation. The opening credits play during this song and Cable's exhortations to the Lord. For film score fans: this movie was released one month after Patton (which Jerry Goldsmith also scored).
The Ballad of Cable Hogue was an unusually light-hearted and tender Western by director Sam Peckinpah, best known today for revisionist Westerns that soaked in nihilistic ultraviolence (most notably 1969's The Wild Bunch).
“Why Should I Worry?”, music and lyrics by Dan Hartman and Charlie Midnight, Oliver & Company (1988)
Performed by Billy Joel
1st in Group B
(use in film) / (soundtrack version)
Early in this adaptation of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist (but where almost all the characters are sassy talking animals), the dog version of Billy Joel, Dodger, reneges on a deal with young orphan cat Oliver (Joey Lawrence) to steal hot dogs from a human vendor.
Have a question or comment about MOABOS's processes? Maybe you would like to know something more about a song or a movie featured in this year's competition? Well, just ask yours truly! If you are having difficulty accessing any of the songs (especially if region-locked) or if there are any errors in the links above or the playlist, please let me know as soon as possible.
Once more to all, my thanks all for your support for the Movie Odyssey, the blog, and for me personally over this last calendar year and beyond. However long you've known me - whether it's been a few months, or, wow, more than half my life, it is a privilege and a pleasure to share all this music and (at least excerpts of) these movies with you. It's my hope you find this entertaining and enlightening about cinema and the music that goes along with it. Do not worry too much about this if you cannot participate, although I will be checking in as the deadlines get close. Happy listening, and I hope you have fun!
The winner is determined by a process distinct from the preliminary round. For the final, the winner is chosen by the process known as single transferable vote (the Academy Awards uses this method to choose a Best Picture winner, visually explained here):
All #1 picks from all voters are tabulated. A song needs more than half of all aggregate votes to win (50% of all votes plus one… i.e. if there are thirty respondents, sixteen #1 votes are needed to win on the first count).
If there is no winner after the first count (as is most likely), the song(s) with the fewest #1 votes or points is/are eliminated. Placement will be determined by the tiebreakers described below. Then, we look at the ballots of those who voted for the most recently-eliminated song(s). Their votes then go to the highest remaining non-eliminated song on their ballot.
The process described in step #2 repeats until one song has secured 50% plus one of all votes. We keep eliminating nominees and transfer votes to the highest-ranked, non-eliminated song on each ballot. A song is declared the winner when it reaches more than fifty percent of all #1 and re-distributed votes.
NOTE: It is possible after several rounds of counting that respondents who did not entirely fill in their ballots will have wasted their votes at the end of the process. For example, if a person voted the second-to-last place song as their #1, ranked no other songs, and the count has exceeded two rounds, their ballot is discarded (lowering the vote threshold needed to win), and they have no say in which song ultimately is the winner.
Tiebreakers: 1) first song to receive 50% plus one of all #1 and transferred votes; 2) total points earned (this was the first tiebreaker in the preliminary round); 3) total #1 votes; 4) average placement on my ballot and my sister’s ballot; 5) tie declared

REVIEWS OF THE WEEK!
Books I’ve read so far in 2023!
Friend me on Goodreads here to follow my more up to date reading journey for the year!
___
58. I Dare You by Ilsa Madden-Mills--⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have a confession to make: I had to read the synopsis to remember what this book was about. LOL. This was quick and cute. I liked the mystery aspect of her not knowing who it was that was texting her, even though it was very obvious. That's all I'm going to say about that because honestly...I forget most of the rest that isn't a spoiler. I remember the major spoiler. But to be honest, I started reading the sequel today and I couldn't even remember some of the major plot points that were brought up in the second book. Oops. This book was a blur. I blame my craving for a sports romance.
___
59. Under Locke by Mariana Zapata--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
He was my boss, my brother’s friend, a Widower, an ex-felon, and a man I’d seen casually with a handful of women. But he was everything that gripped me, both the good and the bad. Worst case scenario if things turned awkward between us, I could go somewhere else. I’d gotten over epic heartbreak before, one more wouldn’t kill me. After moving to Austin following six months of unemployment back home, Iris Taylor knows she should be glad to have landed a job so quickly... even if the business is owned by a member of the same motorcycle club her estranged father used to belong to. Except Dex Locke might just be the biggest jerk she’s ever met. He’s rude, impatient and doesn’t know how to tell time. And the last thing they ever expected was each other. But it was either the strip club or the tattoo shop. … she should have chosen the strip club.
___
60. Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris--⭐️⭐️⭐️
Re-read May 2023: My friends and I are doing a re-read of this series (and maybe I'll actually finish reading this series.) The re-read of the first book went as expected: hilariously dated and Sookie's sass will always be memorable. Don't even get me started on Bill's "sOoKiE". I dare you to read that in a regular voice LOL. Will hopefully continue this re-read!
___
61. All Rhodes Lead Here by Mariana Zapata--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Okay, pretty sure this is my new favourite Zapata book (only potentially second to THE WALL OF WINNIPEG AND ME, simply because of nostalgia's sake.) Have I mentioned, ever, how much I love slow burns? How about Zapata's signature gift of giving us the swooniest and grumpiest romance stories of all time? Well, let me tell you--I'm the biggest slut for her writing because It. Is. So. Good. and addicting. Rhodes is a grumpy and older single dad living in a tiny mountainous town who is very reluctant to rent his garage apartment to the protagonist. The level of distrust that he has for our MC is, of course, something key in Zapata books. But what I love about these love interests (which I have discussed in detail with my friends) is how we watch them slowly melt. We watch them go from the coldest bastards in town to the meltiest of cinnamon rolls and I LOVE IT. This was one of those books that made me want the story to never end. I loved the MC's relationship with the LI's son and the complex relationship between everyone. I have a soft spot for an MC who is restarting her life in a place where people, especially the LI, underestimates her. This book gave me that, but it also gave me the most coziest of reads. I loved everything about it. This was classic Zapata and I was such a sucker for it. If you like slow burns, grumpy older men, and an MC who is determined to live her best life, then I think you might like this one. In any case, I think Zapata should be on every romance reader's TBR!
___
62. The Best Thing by Mariana Zapata--⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I'm usually going to love Zapata books--even if this one wasn't a favourite. I loved the trope of the secret baby and the sexy and rugged rugby-playing love interest. I played rugby in high school, so I definitely had some flashbacks while I read this, LOL. Okay, so like I said, I loved the trope of the secret baby since I'm one of those heathens who enjoys a good surprise pregnancy tropes. But I wasn't a huge fan of how Zapata spent more than one chapter leading us into the reveal (also, this is not a spoiler because if you look up this trope, it literally is one of the first books recommended). I think if I had gone into this without knowing that not-so-secret twist, I would have liked that stretching out of suspense a bit more. But let's be honest: I would have probably guessed it, anyway. Remember--I'm a heathen. THE BEST THING felt very different from Zapata's other romance novels--maybe because this felt more like Mariana Zapate Lite™️. There wasn't a slow burn romance, the MC was different enough to give the whole narrative a different feel, and the main trope was a second chance romance. I'm one of those people who will never complain that Zapata's novels feel "formulaic" because, please, give me all of it. Formula away, baby! But I think these changes in the status quo when it comes to Zapata's type of books made this stand out a lot. This isn't a bad thing, it's just different. As a result, the story was enjoyable and it had cute moments, but it just...didn't feel like a Zapata book. For me, it kind of lacked that certain spark that makes me swoon over the love interest (even though he was very sweet). It felt like she forgave him so quickly and then suddenly, he was just there? We get an explanation, but I don't know if someone who proclaims to be feisty would really forgive so easily. Must be the Taurus in me. This wasn't a favourite, but knowing me, I'll read this in five years and declare past me "wildly blind" for not realizing the magnificence of this story.
___
63. Luna & the Lie by Mariana Zapata--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Re-read in May 2023: Listen, this is apparently my Zapata month. Ugh, before I even put this in as a re-read, I got all giddy thinking about this gruff older love interest. I've definitely reached that point in my life where I extra appreciate those older men with the grey streaks in their hair. Yum. I loved that Luna is one of those women who has fought really hard for everything she has and who finally let's someone in to share her burdens with her. Even if its this tatted up older man who sounds so...ugh...on the audiobook when he says "Remember me?" Excuse me while I go fan myself. Go, Luna, girl. Get your man.

Sleeping With Sirens - Waterfront - 18/03
Post-Hardcore from Florida takes flight at the ‘Front.....
Sleeping With Sirens arrive into our fine city riding a crest of a wave. Their live shows are receiving rave reviews and their latest album (2022′s Complete Collapse) has been heralded as their most complete work today. With this being said I was highly looking forward to what was in store and it has to be said so were the 699 others that packed out the room, especially when we have ABBA Gold playing before the band take the stage.
Not a single person could have left the room disappointed (aside from the fella that lost a near on full pint as the band took the stage) as the Sirens put on an incredible 80 minute show. Opening with ‘Break Me Down’ drummer Matty Best lead the charge with a dramatic intro, filling the room with almighty thuds. The rest of the band then piled onto the stage to a cacophony of feedback and audience appreciation, it was truly game on.
Tumblr media
There was no time to catch our breath, the band ripped into ‘Kick Me’ the younger members of the audience clearly enjoying their moment to scream obscenities without the gaze of their parents shone upon them. We were then treated to a hat-trick of tracks from the ‘How To Be Lost’ album, the highlight for me being ‘Leave It All Behind’ the chorus absolutely took off, I’m convinced every single person was singing along, even those stood on the merch stand were joining in. The song is a statement of intent, it is driven, passionate and yet still incredibly melodical, a true highlight. ‘Never Enough’ and ‘Talking To Myself’ completed the trio. I think it is fair to say that ...Lost is the band’s most popular record and these songs were greeted like a hero returning from the destruction of a Death Star.
We powered on with a range of songs taken from various albums (the band have seven studio albums in their locker) we then had for me the standout moment, before playing ‘Better Off Dead’ lead singer Kellin Quinn gave an impassioned plea to remind us all that we, as people, really do matter and to make sure we stick around. I have to say I found Quinn a truly wonderful lead singer. There’s zero arrogance about him, he comes across as someone who truly cares, his stage presence is one that is earnt by his sincerity.
Tumblr media
Slowing things down we have a couple of acoustic moments, a cover of the Goo Goo Dolls classic ‘Iris’ goes down a storm, the joy of singing along with Kellin and everyone I’m surrounded by isn’t broken by the moment I think that quite a few members of this audience might not have been born when the original was released! Still, this is beautiful. Hopefully they will return to Norwich and I’m pretty certain they could easily fill the UEA, they have the talent and support to be playing bigger venues, that said though the intensity of playing a smaller room always wins for me.
Dancing through their career for a couple of songs, back to 2010 for ‘If I’m James Sean, you’re Audrey Hepburn’ and then to the present with ‘Bloody Knuckles’ the musicianship remains tight and yet free flowing, you can see the band have honed their craft, they know how to work a crowd and are having an immense amount of fun with it.
The set closes with arguably the most popular song in the bands arsenal, a rip-roaring version of ‘If You Can’t Hang’ it is a head banging, hands in the air crushing force of nature, the energy remains as high as it did over an hour ago, the pace certainly hasn’t let go. Drowning the cheers with feedback, Sleeping With Sirens owned our senses tonight and for that we should truly be thankful. If you get the chance to see them live do take it, you’ll be transported away into something bigger than yourself and you’ll leave exhilarated. The force is strong with this one.
