Highlights from the conference room where they nominated contenders for Word of the Year 2023:
• They put Skibidi Toilet on the projector to explain what “skibidi” means.
• Baby Gronk was mentioned.
• We discussed the Rizzler.
• “Cunty” was nominated.
• “Enshittification” was suggested for EVERY category.
• “Blue Check” (like from Twitter) was briefly defined as “Someone who will not Shut The Fuck Up”
• The person writing notes briefly defined babygirl as “referencing [The Speaker]”. He is now being called babygirl in the linguist groupchats.
• MULTIPLE people raised their hand to say “I cannot stress this enough: ‘Babygirl’ refers to a GROWN MAN”

Y'all. Kraft just erected an 8 foot tall monument to its own mayonnaise outside of Merriam Webster's HQ in Springfield in an effort to make "Moist" Merriam Webster's word of the year. It feels like an article from the fucking Onion but this is real life

A look inside the front cover of my Hobonichi Weeks. I have my word of the year, a place to put whatever Gloomies card is speaking to me in the moment, and my DopaMenu. The DopaMenu is a list of activities that increase dopamine in the brain, divided up into a menu that makes activity selection easier during times I have trouble with decision-making.
Note: Gloomies cards are by @petite-gloom .
DopaMenu concept is by YouTube channel, HowToADHD.

“Swiftie” is officially one of The Oxford Languages “Words Of The Year”
The word was more than 10 times more common in September 2023 than a year before in September 2022, with a noticeable uptick in the use of the word likely related to the success of The Eras Tour.

Russian Word of the Year: искусственный интеллект
Russian linguists picked the word of the year 2023, and it is
Искусственный интеллект /ɪˈskustvʲɪn(ː)ɨɪ̯ ɪnʲtʲɪˈlʲekt/, m - artificial intelligence
Sometimes you can see ИИ in Russian news and blogs, now you know that ИИ stands for AI.
Gramota.ru - a portal run by the Institute of the Russian Language - chose another word of the year:
нейросеть - /nʲɪɪ̯rɐˈsʲetʲ/, neural network

Being a goblin ain't so bad. People tend to leave you alone, and don't expect too much of you. Plus there's something oddly therapeutic about collecting shiny things, don't you think?

Ahaha I have just come across your WOTY nominations posts. I work for the Oxford English Dictionary. At risk of corroborating every stereotype ever proposed for my countrymen, I have to relate that our equivalent conference was Not Like That, and that people here are still pretty caught up, on multiple levels, with “mid”
Yea I was so surprised! People at the LSA convention kept telling me to go to the WOTYs and I was like "how fun could this possibly be?" But I was wrong! It was such an absurd and hilarious experience. I think it helped that the person who had control of the projector (who I *think* was the VP of communications for the American Dialect Society) had a penchant for causing chaos on purpose.
