japanese learning is so fun it will be like
AH! Incredible! i understood that!
then wow. i have. no idea. in the slightest. what i’ve just read/heard.
at the moment the no idea parts are almost certainly hiragana (or audio only) that is not a cognate to a language i know better. which fair enough. an opaque language is going to be more of a struggle.
there is a huge payoff in japanese though when i understand something, if that makes sense. like... with japanese, the day i could read a single line (even a tiny one) in a manga in year 2 of learning was IMMENSE. the day i could comprehend a caption on instagram was Awesome. even now, just being able to comprehend PART of a conversation in a video game scene is so cool. just being able to play 2 hours of kingdom hearts in japanese (even though i know the game by memory) is so awesome to just pick up one tidbit of new info - some translation difference, some new word, some kind of formality/informality that was never preserved in the english translation. reading a novel sentence... just sentence... and not being overwhelmed. reading a novel Chapter and actually knowing some of what’s going on... especially when i still remember when i could Not even read a simple manga chapter for preteens and follow the basic overall main idea without the help of a dictionary. japanese always feels like a very long process, journey, to me. but it also makes each smaller achievement feel like a lot when i manage to do it.

Better Boyfriend than Him (18+)
Tumblr media
Jessie Fleming x Reader
Preview: Jessie finds out your boyfriend is leaving you unsatisfied in the bedroom, she offers to prove that she’s can treat you better than him. (Inspired by the song Boyfriend by Dove Cameron)
Warnings: SMUT (18+) frat boy Jessie vibes, oral sex (r receiving), fingering (r receiving), suggestive comments about straight sex, small mention of masturbation, technically cheating on boyfriend by reader.
Word Count: 4.7k
A/N: this is the first time I’ve written any form of smut, maybe not my finest work but I wanted to give it a shot.
“I thought your attitude was going to be fixed once you started getting laid regularly. What happened to that?” Those were the first words spoken to you by your best friend that afternoon. You had just opened your apartment door, slamming it behind you, kicking off your shoes with a huff. You had gotten home from your boyfriend’s apartment to find Jessie already at your place, making herself at home. She was your best friend and naturally you both had the spare key and an ongoing open invitation to each other’s apartments.
You had texted her to let her know you were leaving his place and she had run over wanting to spend time with you. Your new relationship had been taking up more of your time, the time that Jessie usually got to spend with you.
“Shut up, Jessie.” You say, a bit harsher than you should but you were already annoyed and felt like any small inconvenience could set you off like a bomb. Moving over to the couch, she had already helped herself to chips and a gotten out a pair of beers one for each of you. You slump down next to her, a heavy sigh leaving your body as you bring the bottle to your lips.
“Oh come on, it's a joke.” She gently pushed on your shoulder. “Seriously though, maybe you should try getting laid more often, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind.” Jessie’s eyebrows wiggle suggestively at you. You know she means well, as far as she’s aware getting laid should relax you, and it would, if your boyfriend was any good in bed.
“I’m technically getting laid plenty often Jess, it’s just not helping.” She glances at you, tilting her head in a questioning manner. You realized you messed up with the way you chose to phrase your sentence, she was going to ask questions.
“What does that mean? How are you technically getting-” You shoot her a pointed look, slight scowl across your face, wanting to end this conversation as quickly as possible. Jessie quickly puts two and two together, stopping her sentence and just replying with. “Oh.”
“Yeah.” You look down feeling a slight flush come across your face, embarrassed that you accidentally just admitted to your boyfriend lack of sexual talent.
“I thought you said it was good, you came raving to me after the first time and from what I heard the other day, it sounded like you were having a great time. What happened?” The confused look from before comes back across her face, this time it has a bit of concern mixed in.
Your embarrassment wasn’t aided by the fact that Jessie brought up hearing you and him the other day. You had forgotten to tell her he was coming over and Jessie had opened the door of your apartment to noises that she won’t ever be able to unhear.
Leaning back on the couch, staring at the ceiling, you give her the answer. “I lied, it was fake.” Pinching the bridge of your noses between your thumb and index finger, you wait for her response. Part of you expects her to be angry at you for lying to her. Looking over at her, she doesn’t look angry or upset with you, she looks sad. She’s giving you the same look you would an injured puppy. Her brown eyes soft, a very faint trace of a sympathetic smile across her lips.
“Is it like everytime? You know? That he doesn’t make you…” her sentence trails off as she looks at you. The red flush that had just been on your cheeks starts to cover the rest of your face and neck, clearly embarrassed by what you had said.
“Jess, can we not do this, please?” Covering your face with your hands, you didn’t want to have this conversation with anyone. You didn’t want to have to explain that your boyfriend wasn’t able to satisfy you, that you had to pull out all the acting for him so that he felt satisfied with himself. You especially didn’t want to have to admit this to Jessie, you knew she’d find it hilarious that your boyfriend was bad in bed. She always made comments about how women do it better, specifically how she does it better than anyone. She had a small reputation, not necessarily for making her way around but she had slept with her fair share of girls at school, well known for the rounds she had made in various sororities and sports teams. She was right, most people gave her raving reviews.
Taking the attempt to change the subject as a yes to her previous question Jessie’s mouth drops open, her previously soft eyes now wide, eyebrows raised.
“He’s never made you cum? That’s embarrassing.” She paused before quickly adding, “For him! Not you.” Not wanting you to think she was calling your inability to finish embarrassing.
“Maybe it’s just hard for me to finish, some people are like that, maybe it’s not his fault. I mean he tries.” Cringing at the words as they come out of your mouth, you question why you continue to respond. Jessie was your best friend but this still felt embarrassing.
“Well, is it always hard for you to finish?”
“Obviously, so it must be me, that’s why I haven't been able to finish any of the times I’ve slept with him.” You continue to defend your boyfriend.
“That’s not what I meant. When you’re doing it solo, is it hard to get there?”
“I’m not answering that.” Feeling your face heat up even more than it already was, your skin feeling like it was burning under Jessie’s gaze. You hadn’t expected her to pry for details about you touching yourself.
“Oh come on, don’t be a prude, we all do it.” The deadpan look on her face indicated that she was fully expecting you to answer the question she had proposed.
“No, it’s easy. It’s different when I’m alone though!” Again you came to the man’s defense and you’re honestly not sure why.
“So he’s the problem. That’s not hard to realize.” When you don’t respond or even look in her direction, she adds, “You can’t just continue to convince yourself that you’re the problem.” When you don’t respond to her, she continues on.
“I’d put him to shame, I’ve only ever left happy customers.” She laughs as she says it, bringing her bottle to her lips to finish the drink off.
“I’m sure you would.” Adding an eye roll at her overly confident statement.
“What? You don’t believe me?” Her eyes squint at you now, hand on her own chest as if she was insulted by your words.
“Sure I do,” the sound of sarcasm was dropping off your words, “all I’m saying is talk is cheap Fleming.” Knowing you would be pushing on her nerves a bit, you continued. She had a reputation and it sure was positive, you didn’t actually doubt her abilities, just not confident they’d work on you.
“Well what, do you want me to prove it?”
“What if I said yes?” You’re not sure what made the challenge come out of your mouth. You didn’t even think before saying it. Maybe it was the annoyance with your boyfriend, maybe it was the three months of pent up sexual frustration, maybe it was Jessie’s confidence surrounding her skills.
Jessie doesn’t respond. Panicking as you realize you just asked your best friend to cross a line beyond friendship, you begin to back track.
“You don’t have to, sorry I shouldn’t have said that, I’m not sure why I did, I don’t actually expect you to-.”
You’re cut off by Jessie walking over to you, taking two strides before grabbing your face, tilting it up and bending down so her lips could meet yours. She pulls away for a second, nodding her head in the direction of the couch, her hand coming to your legs to help you move them so you are laying down. Following your actions Jessie climbs onto the couch, placing herself above you and reconnecting your lips.
Jessie was now on top of you, your back pressed firmly into the couch as her weight and hips held you down. Her hands on either side of your head. She continues to kiss you, each kiss growing sloppier. It had moved from sealed lips pressed together to your lips sliding against hers. Now she had started to open the kiss allowing her tongue to tease at your closed lips. It didn’t take much convincing on your end to open your lips and let her tongue meet yours.
Your hands found their way to her hair, one grabbing a handful at the base of her neck and pulling gently away from you. Taking the hint, Jessie pulled back. She opened her eyes to look down at you. Something about her gaze had almost a dominant expression to it, the way she was hovering over you, trapping your body between hers and the couch, you found yourself biting your lower lip as you looked up at her.
“Are you going to prove it or are we just going to makeout?” Impatience has started to spread in your body. You could feel your heart pounding against your chest, the noise loud in your ears. You secretly hoped Jessie couldn’t hear it.
“Are you sure?” Her soft eyes returned as she checked on you. Her eyes scan your face, the same way she would scan a textbook while the two of you would study, as if she was trying to commit every detail to memory.
“Please.” You weren’t usually one to beg in a situation like this but so desperate to finally feel something, you couldn’t help yourself. The last thing you needed was Jessie backing out if she felt like you were uneasy.
“Okay, let’s go then.” She sat back on her feet before moving your thigh out her way, standing up and placing a hand out for you to grab. With the assistance of her hand you stand up as well and follow her as she walks the two of you to your bedroom. Gently shutting the door behind you, Jessie places her hands on your hips gently rubbing her thumbs against the bump of your pelvic bone.
“Are you sure?” You give her a quick nod, eyes locked on hers. “Okay, if you want to stop at any point, just tell me.”
“I will.”
With your confirmation Jessie pulls you toward her again, your chest coming to meet hers. Unsure of where to put your hands you leave them at your sides for a minute. Still kissing you, you feel her hands leave their place on your hips and grab your hands. She pulls your left hand to her waist, just above her hips and your right she moves to her shoulder before her own find their place back on your hips.
Jessie begins to move her hands, they slide up slowly, coming up to cover your waist. They trail around your sides and onto your lower back. Her hands feel electric, leaving a trail of warmth wherever they go. You can feel her hesitation before she begins to slide her hands lower. She slides her hands into the back pockets of your jeans, giving a gentle squeeze. All it takes is that gentle squeeze to get a choked sigh to come out of your throat. Surprised by the noise, Jessie pulls back from your kiss.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, no I’m good. Keep going.”
Jessie does just that. Still holding your ass she spins you both, your back now toward the bed. You feel her start to lean forward, encouraging you to step backwards. She continues the pressure until you hit the bed frame, her hands coming off of your ass as you find yourself sitting down on the edge of the mattress.
Jessie gives you a quick peck on the lips before her hands are back on you, this time they meet the bottom of your shirt. She grasps it between her fingers, pausing and looking down at you
“Can I take your shirt off?”
Instead of verbally answering, your hands reach to your shirt, starting to pull it off yourself, she takes the hint and helps remove it for you. The black shirt you had been wearing is flung across the room, landing on your desk. A small gasp leaves your mouth as Jessie bends down grabbing the back of your thighs from where you were sitting on the edge of the bed and moves you toward the center. She climbs on the bed, taking her spot back on top of you.
You watch her eyes as they study your body again, her gaze now floating across your chest where your black bra still hides your breasts. Licking her lower lip, her hand moves, running fingers down from the band of your bra to the top of your jeans. A trail of goosebumps rising in response to her touch. She continues tracing lines and circles across your bare stomach, such a simple act and yet it was making you start to squirm, wanting more from her.
“Jess,” her hand freezes in its path and her eyes glance up to meet yours. Before she has the chance to ask if you’re okay, you add, “take my bra off.”
Leaning down she attaches her lips to yours as her hand previously on her stomach moved to the back of your neck. She gently pulls you forward, encouraging you to sit up. You do so, letting her other hand that had been supporting her body weight move to your back, she unclasps your bra easily. You mentally roll your eyes, knowing Jessie is probably too proud of that one handed skill. She gently lays you back before moving both of her hands to the straps. She pulls the straps down your arms, fully exposing your chest to her.
You watch as her eyes wander from one side to the other. Thankful that she’d see you topless on a few occasions before while changing, you felt a bit more comfortable being exposed to her.
“Maybe I shouldn’t say this, but you have some of the best tits I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen my fair share.” Her eyes meet yours for a second before she is back staring.
“Thanks? I guess.” You’re not sure how to respond to her compliment. She continues to stare, her hands staying firmly on your stomach.
“Do you like them played with?” Her eyes bounce between your breast where your nipples had gone hard from the chill of the room, definitely not from the arousal Jessie, your best friend, was causing you.
“He doesn’t usually do much with them besides like a squeeze.”
“Okay, but I don’t care what he usually does. I’m trying to literally do everything he doesn’t do. I want to know what you like, what feels good to you. Stop thinking about just what he does.”
“Then yes, touch them.”
Jessie doesn’t need to be told twice by a pretty girl to touch her boobs. She sits back putting her weight on her legs freeing her hands. She gently cups your chest in her hands, gently squeezing before she moves her thumbs to graze over your already peaked nipples. You’re watching her movements but you can see in your periphery her eyes are watching your face. It felt good knowing she was watching, her attentiveness, her focus on making you feel good made your head spin. She wanted to please you, he was nothing like this.
She removed her hands temporarily placing them back by your sides to support herself as she leaned in to kiss you. The kiss was short lived as she pulled away, moving to place her lips against your jaw. Her warm mouth moved down, leaving a trail of open mouth kisses down the column of your neck before reaching your collarbone. Letting her tongue graze along the definition of the bone, you let out a sigh, you could feel as she smirked against your skin.
She continued on, making her way down your chest until her lips met the curve of your breast. Her mouth found every inch, intentionally avoiding your nipple. Her teasing only lasted a few seconds before she placed her lips against your nipple. Giving it a gentle kiss, testing the waters before going further. Not hearing any protest she continued. This time sucking with some force, letting her lips wrap around you. A small whimper fell from your lips. Her lips released your skin with a slight pop.
“What? Feels good?” A big smirk was across Jessie’s face, she was feeling proud being able to get you whimpering and moving under her by just barely touching you. Her cockiness was radiating off of her, you couldn’t even lie to yourself now, she may be your best friend but she was fucking hot.
You just give her a quick nod, unable to decide what words to respond with, slightly worried no words will come out, only a moan. Jessie sits back, removing her hands and mouth from your body. She adjusts herself so she is now straddling your leg. She brings herself back down, her lips attaching to the nipple she had been neglecting. With her new position, her thigh is placing pressure on your core, providing you the slightest bit of friction as she moves to attend to your chest. Instead of just sucking, her tongue is now circling, applying soft pressure to your sensitive bud.
“Fuck.” Your hand now reaches up to the back of her head, grabbing a handful of her hair and pushing her face further into your chest, wanting more from her. Happy to oblige, her tongue applies more pressure. As she goes to pull away, her teeth gently graze your skin, sending what feels like a shockwave from your chest down to where her thigh was placing pressure against you. You can’t help but tilt your hips in response, involuntarily grinding yourself against her.
Taking the hint that you were ready to move on, Jessie sat back her fingers trailing down your stomach before pausing at the waistband of your jeans. You felt as the tips of her fingers on one hand found their way between your skin and the band of your underwear. The other hand came to rest where the button of your jeans sat. She paused again, giving you the same look she had when she asked if you were sure, the same look she had given you before asking to take off your shirt, the same look she gave you before she touched you. Knowing she was going to ask, you beat her to it.
“Take them off.” Looking her in the eyes as her hands began to move slowly. She undid the button, slowly pulling down the zipper. Both of her hands finding the sides of your jeans, she begins to slide them down along with your panties, leaving you bare. She carefully removes your jeans, taking the time to pull them off, you lift your hips and legs accordingly. Once she has them removed they find a place on the floor, she turns back to quickly take your socks off and motions for you to lay back down.
Unlike before, Jessie had never seen you fully naked before, shirtless on occasion, a few times she’d seen you just in your underwear, and she had seen you in a swimsuit that didn’t hide much, but now here you were completely naked laying in front of her.
Your own insecurities start swarming in your head, slowly you pinch your knees together, subtly trying to cover yourself.
“We don’t have to do this if you’re not comfortable.” Apparently you had failed to close your legs subtly like you thought.
“No, I still want to, it’s just, I’m naked, and I just became very aware of that.”
“That’s kinda the point,” A soft laugh falls from her lips. “Not that it’ll help, but you should be proud of your body, you’re…” she hesitates “I’d say you're gorgeous but I’m not sure that’ll do it justice.” Jessie sits back up removing her own shirt, leaving her shoulders and stomach exposed.
“Thanks.” Your blush from earlier returning across your cheeks as you tried to accept Jessie’s compliment. You close your eyes taking in a deep breath and you relax your clenched thighs allowing your knees to fall back apart, giving Jessie access to you.
She lays down between your legs, her head even with your knees she turns to the side and places a soft kiss on your thigh before turning to the other one repeating the action.
You can’t help but think about your boyfriend in the moment and compare. Jessie was being so soft, so careful with you, checking in on you, and sure he made sure you wanted to, never doing anything you didn’t want, but this felt more intimate, more comfortable.
Continuing her trail of kissing Jessie slowly begins inching up toward your center. Her hands come up to the bend of your knees, she pushes them outward, spreading your thighs and placing your legs over her bare shoulders, giving you a small amount of skin to skin contact. She moves in close enough that you can feel her warm breath between your legs.
She hesitates, her eyes looking over you. Her tongue darted out wetting her lips before she leaned in. You sucked in air as you felt her tongue meet your center. It moved against your pussy with ease due to your pooling arousal. Tracing a line from your entrance up to your clit, she repeats the motion over and over, her eyes locked upward looking at you.
Her tongue slows down, licking slower and slower stripes before she stops with her tongue on your clit. Focusing on your sensitive bud, she begins flicking her tongue with light pressure. You bite your lip, holding back the moan that wanted to escape. Holding it in only lasted a moment as she began to suck softly, making the movements of her tongue feel even more pleasurable. As you had done before, your hands tangle themselves in her hair, pulling tightly on the strands. Small moans now fill the air of your bedroom, no longer feeling like holding them in.
The mixture of warmth and wetness of her tongue makes you throw your head back. You couldn’t help but stare at her, something about her looking up at you from between your legs, while she was eating you out made your brain feel fuzzy.
Pushing your thigh out with her hand, Jessie gave herself enough room to bring her arm up between your legs, her middle finger coming up to rest against your hole. She didn't push in yet, just resting her finger against you and slowly circling the opening. Her tongue still working against you, you could start to feel the faint clench on your abdomen, the same clench you would feel as you would bring yourself close to orgasm when you were by yourself.
Feeling Jessie’s finger enter, you clench around her, causing her to stop moving her finger and her lips to detach from your core as she looks up at you, you release her hair from your tight grip, just letting them rest on her head.. The sight of her looking up at you with messy hair and your wetness covering her lips and chin was not something you had prepared for.
“Are you alright? Sorry I should’ve asked before I used my fingers.” You could see her blown pupils from here, barely any brown remaining around them.
“No I’m good, it feels good, please keep going,” your voice comes out with a slight rasp that you weren’t expecting. Clearing your throat you add, “you can use two.”
Hearing your request, Jessie’s lips and tongue return to your now swollen and red clit. Her hand pushes up and back on your leg, giving herself even more room between your thighs. Still moving slowly Jessie begins to push her middle and ring finger into you. The feeling of her fingers opening you has you throwing your head back, closing your eyes to focus on the feeling. Jessie takes her time still moving only a knuckle at a time, making sure you were open enough around her. You feel your muscles clench again from the feeling of her long fingers along with her tongue.
She pauses when she’s fully inside of you. Instead of thrusting her fingers she just begins to curl them, placing pressure against your walls.
“Fuck Jessie.” Eyes snapping open as you register that you had just moaned her name. You keep your gaze at the ceiling, not daring to look down at the Canadian between your legs. Without looking at her you feel her reaction as she lets out a small moan of her own, the noise causing her lips to reverberate around your clit.
Her tongue continues its movements, she could feel you beginning to tighten around her fingers, becoming increasingly difficult for her to curl them inside of you. She begins thrusting her fingers slightly, still curving them up but adding more movement. The new movement is all you need, the warmth and tightness of your incoming orgasm begin to increase and spread.
“Please Jess.” You’re not even sure what you’re begging her to do, wanting so badly for her to push you over the edge, whatever it takes is good with you. You feel the pace of her fingers speed up slightly, the suction from her lips around your clit increases. The muscles of your thighs begin trembling as you become increasingly sensitive. Your back slowly pulls away from the bed as your arch into her touch. You only last a few more seconds on the edge before your orgasm washes over you.
A loud groan is released from your body as your hand firmly grasp Jessie’s head between your thighs. You push her hard into yourself as your hips move to grind yourself against her face. Your shaking legs wrapping around her head, your walls clenching her fingers so tight they no longer move in and out of you, just curling inside. The pleasure lasts a few seconds before it becomes too much, you let your legs fall off her shoulders and onto the bed. The hands that previously held her tight against you are pushing her back, she releases her lips from you. Her fingers remain inside of you, as you are still clenched around them.
Jessie doesn’t say anything immediately, she just looks up at you from between your legs, face covered in your arousal, her cheeks a slight red from her work. Waiting a second for you to catch your breath, her fingers stay still inside of you. With her free hand she swipes her thumb across her chin, collecting the mixture of her own spit and your wetness, bringing her thumb between her lips to suck it clean. She feels you begin to relax around her fingers, recovering from the intense pleasure, she slowly pulls out of you, a groan leaving your lips as she does so.
Her lips place one last quick kiss on your core, causing you to jump, pulling away from her, slightly being over stimulated. She moves from between your legs, laying down on her side next to you. She pulls the blanket up with her, covering your body and hers with it.
“See I told you it wasn’t you. It’s him.” You turned over to see her shit eating grin, you could still smell yourself on her face. You have the urge to reach out and make her kiss you, wanting to taste yourself from her lips.
“Shit.” Rolling back away you breathed out the word, staring at the ceiling. The reality of the situation comes back into your mind. Your best friend had just made you cum with ease, a task your soon to be ex-boyfriend hadn’t been able to do in the months you had been seeing him.
“What? Are you okay?”
“Yeah I just need to break up with my boyfriend.”

Neteyam felt worry settle deep within his stomach as his eyes jump from Na’vi to Na’vi during the communal dinner. He desperately searched for a specific female amongst the crowd, only to come up empty. He couldn’t figure out where she was, the girl in question who had been occupying his thoughts regularly as of late.
“Neteyam?” Kiri calls for her brothers attention, carefully taking a bite of her fruit.
She watched her brothers tail twitch stiffly. As if he was on alert. His eyes roamed around the crowd before him, squinting as if to zoom into the crowd. His ears twitch to the sound of her voice as he reluctantly turns to face her, his bowl of fruit left untouched within his grasp.
“Yes?” He says, his voice sounding strained.
“What’s got your tail in a twist? Everything ok?” Kiri asks, chuckling at her brothers tensed up state. Neteyam pouts at her teasing tone, letting out a sigh he had been holding in.
“Have you…..seen Y/n?” Neteyam asks carefully, his words come out slowly as if he was afraid to admit what’s been bothering him for the first half of the dinner. Kiri stifles a laugh, passing it off as a cough.
Y/n was Kiri’s best friend, Kiri’s only friend as many Na’vi children around their age were weary of her. It made it difficult for children to approach her due to her interest in the nature around her, which made her to be an odd Na’vi. But not to Y/n. They both shared a love of nature together, searching out herbs and interacting with the creatures around them in pure awe. They met coincidentally many years ago and have been inseparable ever since.
Normally Neteyam never had the time to focus on his siblings friends. He was too busy with his training and shadowing his father that he didn’t quite know what his siblings did on their feee time. Unless they did something that caused trouble. But other then that, he didn’t know or care of any other friends they had.
Until he met Y/n.
About a year ago when Neteyam had come home early from his solo hunt, he came home to a surprise. A female Na’vi he didn’t recognize, braiding his sisters hair. Even though she was doing the most mundane activity at the moment , she looking so beautiful she literally took his breath away upon eye contact. It didn’t take long for Neteyam to linger around Kiri often, always in hopes of seeing Y/n again.
Y/n was shy and very soft spoken. She rarely met Neteyam’s glances, always opting to look at the uninteresting soil below. The only time he really got to admire her up close was at the communal gatherings. Where she would always sit next to Kiri as they shared a meal. It was at those moments Neteyam’s heart felt full. He was close enough to talk to her, see her smile and hear her laugh. He always looked forward to any event or dinners cause of this.
But for the past week, she hasn’t been showing up as often. She either missed breakfasts, or dinners. It was on and off but she missed enough of them that made Neteyam feel restless. He counted down the days he had without her presence, and it pained him not knowing why she would disappear like that. He rarely had time to spend with his family and his friends outside of his duties. The only leisure time he had were these moments. Where he always felt happy, But now, he was anything but happy.
“Missing her already?” Kiri jokes making Neteyam frown at her teasing.
“I’m being serious Kiri. She’s missed many meals, I’m worried for her…..she’s your friend, why aren’t you worried?” Neteyam questions suspiciously. He immediately catches the way Kiri’s face twitch at his words. A look crossing her face. If his eyes weren’t trained onto her face he would have missed it entirely. She knew something, something she didn’t want him to know.
“O-oh, I don’t know. Maybe she’s feeling a bit unwell? I’ll check up with her later. You focus on eating. Don’t you have a hunt tomorrow?” Kiri desperately evades the topic. Neteyam clenched his teeth. He opens his mouth to question her, ready to grill her for answers but is cut off when Lo’ak sits in between them. Kiri let’s out a sigh of relief as if Lo’ak had saved her from confrontation.
“Guess what I just heard!! Oa’kae is planning on courting someone!” Lo’ak says excitedly, eager to gossip about what he heard from his friends.
~~~~~~~~~
Neteyam groans in anger as he paces around in the family tent. He had come back from the hunt a good while ago. Thankfully the hunt well perfectly fine, no casualties and they had hunted a lot. But Neteyam couldn’t shake the thoughts that had him on edge since last night.
Which is why he waited for Kiri in the family tent. He was ready to pry the answers he knew she had. But she didn’t show, it was as if she knew Neteyam would be waiting for her. Neteyam’s ears twitch hearing footsteps come towards the tent.
His frown deepens when Lo’ak peers in. His eyes stare at Neteyam in question as he glances around.
“What’s wrong? You look angry and I haven’t done anything yet” Lo’ak points out, stepping into the tent. Neteyam huffs out, his shoulders still tensed.
“Where is Kiri?” Neteyam asks, ignoring his question. Lo’ak smirks at his words. Something about Kiri getting in trouble amuses him. He didn’t like being on the receiving end of his fathers or Neteyam’s glares. According to him it’s nice to see someone else get in trouble for a change.
“She is near the Tsahik’s tent” Lo’ak replies eagerly. Waiting for Neteyam to explain why he was looking for her, wanting to know what she had done.
“Is she in trouble? What did she do?”
“She isn’t in trouble. I needed to ask her something” Neteyam sighs out, his fingers pinching his nose in thought.
“Oh I don’t know, she seemed busy. She was talking to Y/-“
Neteyam runs out of the tent before Lo’ak gets to finish his sentence. His legs carry him towards the Tsahik’s tent praying that he didn’t miss her. That he would make it in time to catch the one girl he had been going crazy over the past few days.
Just as Neteyam rounds the corner he comes to an abrupt stop hearing hushed voices. His ears twitch recognizing Y/n’s quiet sweet voice. He tip toes closer so he can hear what was being said.
“Y/n! You have to be more careful. Neteyam was there today. You could have gotten caught!” Kiri hisses. Neteyam frowns at her words.
“I know, I’m sorry Kiri. I just had to make sure he was ok. You know how Rik’ean gets when I’m not there” Y/n replies back. Neteyam’s ears pin down, his heart rate quickening.
Thousands of questions flood his system.
Tumblr media
‘Who is Rik’ean…..why was she with him this morning?’
Neteyam felt sick to his stomach. What if it was a potential mate? What if she was already promised and he lost his chance before he could actually take a proper shot?
“It’s fine, just be careful” Kiri reminds her, huffing in relief . Y/n giggles at her friends panicked state. Normally Neteyam’s heart would sore at the beautiful sound of her laughs, but now it felt like a stab to his heart.
“Oh! Guess what!” Y/n adds before the girls part ways. There is a pause before she continues
“Today, he gave me so many kisses!! It was so cute Kiri!!” Y/n squeals in delight.
Neteyam hand juts out, his hand holding himself up against the branch beside him. His breathing came out in gasps as remembers what he heard.
‘He kissed her, and she liked it?’
Neteyam figured he had heard enough. Not wanting to hear his sisters response as he runs away from the tent. Angry tears sting at his eyes as he tried to clear his head.
Kiri makes a face at Y/n’s words.
“Y/n…..we’re talking about a Palulukan here. You sure he just didn’t want to eat your face? What was meant as bite, you misinterpreted it as a kiss?”
Y/n huffs out in annoyance. “No Kiri, he is truly grateful. Trust me!”
~~~~~~~~~~
Neteyam blankly stared down at his food, he couldn’t seem to find it within himself to eat anything. He felt utterly heart broken.
“Are you gonna eat that, bro?” Lo’ak asks, pointing at the juicy piece of meat in his bowl. Neteyam shakes his head as Lo’ak grabs for the piece, guzzling it down with a satisfied hum.
Neteyam glances at Kiri, who was focused on her own food. He didn’t know why but he felt the deep urge to question her on what he had heard today. But chose against it. What else did he need to know? He heard everything he needed to hear, and that’s that.
Neteyam sees something move swiftly within the crowd form his peripheral vision. He snaps his head to that direction seeing Y/n rush out , towards the forest. A new feeling surging throughout his body as he shoves his bowl into Lo’ak’s hands. He stands up ignoring his siblings calls before blindly rushing to where he had seen her disappear.
As Neteyam expertly weaved his way through the trees he sees Y/n’s retreating figure. Speeding up he placed his hand on her shoulder causing her to let out a surprised gasp.
“Y/n” Neteyam calls, catching his breath.
Y/n carefully turns around. He notices how she looked scared, holding a tiny woven bag in her hands. She also looked…beautiful. Her top that matches her loincloth was beautify woven with blue beads, Neteyam’s favourite colour. It was it if it called to him. But he knew, it wasn’t for him.
Neteyam feels his throat close up. He didn’t know why he got up and ran after her. Why he came all this way knowing what he already knew. He gulps back before pulling his hand away from her shoulder.
“You’re going to him” he states causing Y/n’s eyes to widen in fear.
“H-how?” Y/n stutters out, her voice low. Her eyes wonder around his face aimlessly, noticing the anger that radiates off him.
“I overheard you this morning….” Neteyam confesses. He didn’t even feel ashamed, just heartbroken.
“N-net-“
“Y/n, I love you” Neteyam blurts out. The words that stayed locked within his heart bubbling up in a last ditch effort. Y/n blinks rapidly, trying to process what she was hearing.
“I’ve loved you for so long. I kept my distance because of how shy you are. I didn’t want to scare you off. I swear to Eywa, you’ve stolen my heart the moment I saw you”
Y/n’s face turns purple with embarrassment. She has to pinch herself to know she wasn’t dreaming.
“I don’t know how long you’ve been seeing him, and what you’ve done. But none of that matters-“
“W-wait, I think you-“
“-what matters is that my feelings for you will never chang-“
“N-Neteyam-m”
“I will love you forever. I’ll cherish you forever. I swear. Just give me a chan-“
“Neteyam!!!!” Y/n calls loudly, effectively stopping Neteyam’s plea. He pouts at her tone, she had never raised her voice against her before. This was new.
“Neteyam. You’ve got it all wrong…” Y/n says softly. She bites her lips, her eyes searching Neteyam’s to confirm what he said was the truth. Feeling like she had no other choice Y/n sighs out.
“I want to show you something, come with me.”
~~~~~~~~~
“What are we waiting for?” Neteyam asks, his eyes searching around them. He had let Y/n pull him deeper and deeper into the forest. They stopped in front of a rather large tree, waiting for the past few minutes.
“Neteyam, I need you to keep an open mind. And stay calm. Think you can do that?” Y/n asks taking him off guard. This is the most Y/n had spoken to him with eye contact. She usually keeps her head low whenever she speaks to him.
Neteyam smiles at the new change. Now he was able to admire her smile while he listened to her melodic voice.
“I can do that. Why?” There is a pregnant pause as Y/n swallows thickly.
“You’ll see”
Y/n faces the tree letting out a tiny call. It held similarity to the call she used to call her Ikran, but different at the same time. Neteyam hears rustling come from the bush up ahead as his body rises wth goosebumps. His hand reaches for where his knife would be at, coming up empty.
‘Shit, I don’t have a weapon?’
Neteyam was so immersed in Y/n he had forgotten that they were deep in the forest, at night. With no protection.
“Y/n, I don’t th-“ the words die in his mouth as Neteyam sees something walk out of the bushes. It was large, it’s green eyes scanning both Y/n and Neteyam. It’s paws step onto the soil with a thump under its heavy weight.
Instinctively Neteyam pulls Y/n behind her, his heart racing a mile per minute.
“Shit!!!”
It was a Palulukan.
Y/n tries to step back to where she stood but Neteyam wouldn’t allow her.
“Y/n listen carefully. I need you to make a run for it” he says lowly. He is confused why the creature hasn’t attacked already . But he didn’t want to take this moment to wonder why, when he could use this moment to ensure Y/n got out of there safely.
“No, Neteyam. Be calm, this is Rik’ean”
Neteyam’s ears twitch to the sound of the fimiliar name, the name that has been haunting him all day. Neteyam steps aside, his eyes blown wide in fear and surprise.
“W-what?”
Y/n sighs out, stepping towards the creature. Rik’ean cooes as she comes near, bringing the bag towards him. She empties the contents onto the floor, as Rik’ean purrs excitedly at the meat in front of him. She caresses the creatures head as he closes his eyes at the warm touch.
Y/n stands up and turns to Neteyam. Her hand still petting the Palulukan lovingly.
“This is Rik’ean” she announces. Neteyam closes his mouth, which had been hanging through out the entire interaction.
“This is Rik’ean?” Neteyam confirms, pointing a shaken finger towards the Palulukan. Y/n nods before letting go of Rik’ean who immediately begins to swallow down the meat.
“How!!?” Neteyam questions stepping closer. He stays weary of the creature, but seeing how comfortable Y/n was, he felt himself relax.
“A couple of weeks ago I found him injured. I took care of him and nursed him back to health. He disappeared right afterwards so I thought I’d never see him again” Y/n explains. She glances at the creature before turning to Neteyam, who stood a head taller than her.
“But out of bad luck, Kiri and I ran into some nantang’s. We would have gotten hurt, or worse. But Rik’ean saved us that day. He recognized me…..he’s my friend” Y/n says, peering up at Neteyam. The entire time his eyes filled with awe and adoration.
“Please don’t tell anyone, I don’t want anyone to know…” Y/n pleads, in fear of what the clan would think. What Neteyam would think. The expression his face proved he was ok with it, he didn’t look scared or freaked out. Neteyam nods in understanding.
“I won’t, I promise” he assures glancing at the creature. He had long finished his meal, now opting to watch them quietly. His peculiar green eyes watching Neteyam.
“So….what do you think?” Y/n whispers. Half in fear, half in question. Neteyam chuckles , stepping closer to her.
“I think your wonderful….I mean, befriending a Palulukan? That’s an amazing feat! You know my mother was Palulukan Makto. She was fierce in battle and a Palulukan recognized her” Neteyam beamed, his eyes filled with adoration as he refuses to break eyes contact with her.
“You’ve befriended one, out of your kindness. You’ve been recognized…..you are special Y/n” Neteyam whispers, unknowingly leaning closer. His breath fans against her lips enticingly. Y/n smiles wide, her heart soaring at his words.
“And to think you were jealous of him” Y/n teases. Her breath proving how close they were to one another. Neteyam hums in defeat. He was jealous, terribly jealous. To the point he confessed, and not in the cool way he wanted to.
“I’m sorry….can I make it up to you?” Neteyam asks, his eyes glancing down to her awaiting lips. Y/n’s eyes twinkle in happiness.
“You could give me something I’ve wanted for a very long time” Y/n offers, the boost in confidence helping her through.
“Oh? And what would that be?” Neteyam quirks an eyebrow.
“This” Y/n whispers, her hand reaching up to pull him flush against her own. Their lips press against each other for a much needed kiss. Neteyam grabs on waist, keeping her close to him as he closes his eyes at the sensation. Their lips mold against one another feverishly. The feeling of love deep within them. Just as Neteyam nudges his tongue against her lips he pulls away hearing a threatening growl.
Y/n and Neteyam turn to Rik’ean, who is much closer now. His eyes on Neteyam, baring his teeth. Not in a threatening way, but the growl he gave was a warning.
“I think he’s jealous” Y/n teases, catching her breath. Neteyam swoons at the sight of her swollen lips.
“Let him, he deserves it” Neteyam responds, side eyeing the creature out of annoyance. Sure, it was a Palulukan. But did he have to ruin the moment?
“Why?”
“He deserves to feel what I felt” Neteyam replies easily causing Y/n to laugh at his words.
“So…..did you prefer his kisses. Or mine?” Neteyam asks, still firmly holding her against him.
“Hm…I wonder” Y/n teases, her finger tapping her chin in thought. Neteyam smirks, leaning his forehead against hers.
“Guess I’ll have to to convince you, Ma’Y/n”
been obsessed with coryo after watching tbosas 😭 please write more of bestfriend!coryo <3
so so adorable 💋 i love u tehe
me gasping like in that tiktok sound: oh my goodness i love this question!!!
in all seriousness i have so many more thoughts on this dynamic omg
----
thinking about bestfriend!coryo who knows your parents love him, and, more importantly, he knows how to use that to his advantage.
it's no accident, he's put in meticulous effort in making sure that they not only approve of the friendship, but that he's their favorite friend of yours. when it comes to a family as prominent and wealthy as yours, parental approval goes a long way, especially with how regularly your parents leave town for business.
your father's admiration isn't an easy thing to win, but coriolanus is no stranger to uphill battles, and you're worth it. with the way that you look at him, how could you not be?
so he puts in the work: being the perfect student in classes taught by known friends of your father, wearing his best clothing and practicing old capitol etiquette his grandma'am was more than happy to review with him before family dinners that you invited him to, and making sure to keep proper distance between the two of you whenever your parents are around, no matter how difficult it is for him to remember to not hold your hand.
the hardest part is the fact that most of your father's intimidation comes from the fact that he's the exact kind of man coryo wants to be. powerful, respected, and in a position to never worry about finances or status. but he keeps at it, taking more care than usual to make sure that the signs of poverty are never visible in front of your parents.
even if that means purposefully leaving leftovers of the best food he's eaten in years on his plate so that no one will think he's starving. even if you give him a look that only he can feel the strangeness of because even though you've never spoken of his financial status, you can tell that he's not as well off as everyone thinks. that's the only thing about you that digs beneath his skin--you can always tell.
he's unsure if his efforts are working because of your father's constantly stoic disposition even though you assure him that that's your father when he's relaxed.
but then one day, he's over on your father's last night at home before returning to the districts to oversee some business, and your father asks to speak with him in private. you're instantly snapping your head up from your textbook, wanting to make sure that your father won't say anything embarrassing or rude.
he's scared off other friends in the past and even though it hurts, you never fight back too much because your father isn't an easy man to talk back to. but this is where you draw the line. you're not going to lose your coryo.
coryo feels something in his stomach knot, especially at that bewildered look behind your eye, but he's not about to be openly intimidated, so he assures you that he's fine. when you push, asking what topic could possibly involve just coryo and him and be that private, your father says that it's just business from man to man.
coryo has to force down a smile because he knows he'll be hearing no end of it from you as soon as the two of you are alone together. then he starts to think that this might be it. maybe your father has found out about his true financial status or dean highbottom has finally gotten to him and he's about to be banned from seeing you.
he forces down his anxiety and follows your father into the hall. your father's quick to the point, letting him know that he's leaving for another long stretch of time and that your mother's social and professional engagements mean that you'll be alone often. he closes the statement by asking coriolanus to look after you until he returns.
the realization that coriolanus has made it hits him at the same time as the relief and for a second all he can do is stare. then his senses return to him and he's swearing to your father that he'll take such good care of you, your father will have nothing to worry about. then your father's clasping his shoulder and offering him a gruff but oddly genuine thank you, son before telling him to get back to your room before you get paranoid.
it's an odd way to end the moment, but coryo's so busy trying to convince himself to not mentally plan out your wedding (because let's be honest, that's a level of trust from someone like your father might as well be a pre-engagement) that he doesn't think of it.
when he gets back to your room, you ask as casually as you can manage what your father wanted. after telling you that your father just wants to make sure that you're looked after while he's away, coryo expects you to be happy. but instead of reacting positively, you just sort of nod and mumble something polite before attempting to go back to studying.
something in his chest hardens. he's your best friend, who you spend as much time as socially acceptable with, and you two are being given the perfect excuse to be around each other more and you're not happy.
he immediately pushes and you reluctantly tell him that this has to mean that he's in with your father. another thing that coryo thinks you should be thrilled about. the more your father approves, the closer the two of you can be. he's accusing you of being sick of him, of trying to get rid of him, of no longer wanting to be best friends with him.
that has you scrambling to defend yourself. there's little you consider more important than your friendship with him. it's the only bond you fully trust.
so you tell him that your real concern is that your father never gets along with your friends that way, and that the only similar reference point you have is the way he talks to people like him.
you then tell him that the people in your father's social circle aren't like coryo. at the very least, not your coryo, who's never harsh with you and would rather spend parties sitting with you than sharing cruel opinions to impress other men.
all coriolanus hears is that you don't see him the way you see the actually important men. the hurt behind his eyes has you moving to stand and reaching for him. he lets you take his hand but doesn't react, so you explain it as transparently as possible. people that your father likes are mean, and you don't want to lose him to that.
there's something about the way you say it, all round eyes and genuine worry. it reminds him too much of tigris, of the newfound hint of tension in their relationship that's become more prevalent. she's constantly reminding him of what his father's success turned him into.
coryo's pulling you into a hug, whispering promises that you could never lose him. you're hugging him back tightly, hand smoothing circles against his back.
he realizes he means what he's saying. he can achieve the prominence he wants without alienating you. there's a way to be stern with the world and just coryo to you. and even if his edges become a little sharper, he'll keep that away from you and you'll understand.
you may criticize some of your father's views and actions, but you do love him. coryo sees it in the way that you constantly strive for his approval, he sees it in the way your face lights up when he's home. if you can love your father through your disagreements, you can love him as well. he'll make sure of it.
feeling better, he starts semi-playfully chiding you for even thinking that anything could take you away from him. that you should know better than to not see this as yet another thing he's doing for you, for your friendship.
you don't want to admit it, but you're feeling a little bad for reacting like that. after all, coryo was so excited to tell you and you know your father's capable of scaring people out of your life. at least this means that nothing's going to get in between the two of you.
coryo recognizes your slight pout and the apologetic line between your eyebrows. the two of you so rarely argue that even a hint of conflict has you willing to do anything to make things feel normal again.
so he lets himself play into his hurt. you're quick to pick up on it, holding onto him a little tighter. the two of you stay like that for awhile until you break the silence, saying that you're happy that he has an excuse to be around more.
eventually the two of you end up sitting on your bed, both of you silently agreeing that you've done enough homework. instead you focus on reassuring him, holding his hand between both of yours, pressing the occasional chaste kiss against his knuckles and resting your head against his shoulder until he has to go home.
after your father leaves, coryo takes his promise to look after you seriously. he's already in the habit of walking you home after school every day, but he start staying over after every day. the lack of authority figures around makes it a little easier to accept the after school snacks your maid always prepares and sometimes he even lets you send some home with him.
his grandma'am's over the moon when he starts accepting invitations to school social events that he honestly considers painful because he's escorting you. she's convinced that the two of you are getting married and with your family's status and the snow name, there's no door the two of you won't be able to unlock. even though you're still just friends, he rarely reminds her. it's for her own sake, he tells himself, it makes her happy.
the promise to your father also makes him bolder. he feels more assured, more justified in his disapproval of those that show a little too much interest in you.
you still don't notice the way his jaw tightens when some unaware guy gets too close, or think anything of the way that it almost always leads to him grabbing your hand.
he also stays over more, sometimes leaving for a few hours in the late afternoons so your maid doesn't think anything's going on. your family's estate is so large it's easy enough to get him in and out through a secondary exit.
the two of you fall into such a good routine that when your parents do get back, they start trusting coryo even more. your father asks if he can take you to certain social events that normally you wouldn't be allowed to attend and your strict weekday curfew becomes more of a suggestion when he's around.
“Cause You Kiss Me and It Stops Time ♡˖” BSD Men x GN!Reader ੈ✩‧₊˚
╰┈➤ Nikolai Gogol, Chuuya Nakahara, Fyodor Dostoevsky
Warnings; Nothing but Nikolais part is proofread, spoilers
Description; Bungo Stray Dogs men as my favorite kiss cliches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A/n; today I sent an ask and wanted to cry it's scary dawg
⑅Nikolai Gogol⑅
• Cliche - Smudged makeup after kisses; As both a clown and someone who couldn't care less about gender norms, Nikolai like to paint his face with pretty shades of makeup to add more to his clown look, but sometimes his makeup wasn't the most transfer proof, especially his lipstick.
ೃ⁀➷
Nikolai was readying himself for the day in your bathroom mirror, sifting through the drawers for his lipstick that he kept in your apartment for times like this when he stayed overnight and didn't care to bring anything. He had extra clothing there, and you could easily wash and dry his clothing overnight while the two of you spent time together, so he figured he'd just start leaving some makeup, too. That way he wouldn't have to bring anything but himself and his love to your apartment. His eyes finally land on it and he snatches it from the drawer and pops the lid off, bringing the stick to his lips and smoothly applying the red pigment. He then put a dot on his nose, blending it out and finishing his routine. He can hear the bed creaking from the bedroom, signaling your awakening. He then hears the soft sound of your steps trudging closer.
He put the cap back on the lipstick and tossed it back into the drawer, going to meet you in the hallway only for you to walk right into him. "Oh, m'sorry, Kolya. I thought I'd find you here...you look so nice." You say, yawning and wrapping your arms around him. He smiles and rubs your back sweetly, placing a kiss right between your eyebrows. "Thank you, my dove! Don't worry about it, it's alright...oh, I forgot about my lips." He brings his thumb out to wipe the deep red mark away, but you swat his hand away. "No, I like it when I have your lipstick all over me...you should give me kisses with it freshly applied more often." You say, looking up at Nikolai with a small sparkle in your eyes. He hums and rubs his thumb across your cheek instead of over the mark and pulls you in. "Whatever you'd like, my dove." He whispers against your lips, closing the distance between your faces pleasantly. His nose bumps against your own and the hand that's not cupping your cheek is on your hip.
Once he's decided he's had his fill of your kiss for the moment (when you're both nearly blue with a lack of oxygen), he pulls away, tracing circles into the skin of your cheek. He scanned over your face that was now reddened with his lipstick and smirked, moving his time to glide over the faint redness. "Look at that...so breathtaking." He whispers in your ear, turning you towards the mirror to see yourself. The dark maroon shade pressed to your lips in the shape of Nikolais along with a smudged dot from your bumped noses remained painted on your skin. You could help but blush at the lasting proof of his affections while you leaned into his body. "How'd I do? Good?" He asks, his own face now smudged too. You nod groggily. "Yeah, really good. It might make me giggle." You say. He laughs under his breath and pulls you in for a short peck, a kiss so different from the other one but just as loving. "Great, you know I'll always try to make you happy, darling." He says, nuzzling his cheek into your head. Your smile stays plastered on your face while you remained in your boyfriends arms, feeling the light peek through the windows into the bathroom, pleased with your new, temporary look.
⑅Chuuya Nakahara⑅
• Cliche - "shut up and kiss me"; Chuuya and you love each other enough to tease one another regularly, but when Chuuya gets tired of it, he's gotta find a way to make you knock it off
ೃ⁀➷
Chuuya slept next to you as he always does, his arms wrapped around your midsection and his head buried in the crook of your neck. You had awaken from your sleep abruptly due to his snoring, especially since it had been so close to your ear this particular morning. You almost couldn't stand it, but it was only a few minutes until his alarm, and you wanted the warmth from his body for a little bit longer. His ginger hair was messy and draped across his face and you could feel it prickling your shoulder every time he snuggled closer to you. You savoured the comfort of your position while it lasted, but unfortunately the anticipated ring of his phone did in fact come. It took a couple rings before Chuuya started to stir and eventually open his eyes, but when he did, his gaze fell onto you.
"You're up early, darlin'.... why's that?" He asks, burying his head back into your neck to yawn with his hands roaming over your tummy. "You were snoring directly into my ear." You tell him, brushing his hair from his face with your fingers. He lets out a quiet chuckle before propping himself up on his elbow and looking down at you. "M'sorry, was it really that bad?" He tilts his head to the side, flashing his teeth in a sleepy grin. You nod and yawn yourself before giving him an answer. "I think it was the worst snoring I've ever heard from you. It was like- 'honk-mimimimimi'." You tell him with a giggle. He scoffs playfully and swings his legs over the edge of the bed, scooching off to brush his teeth in the bathroom connected to your bedroom. You watched him walk to the door, staring at his back muscles and grinning to yourself. You almost couldn't fathom how much work must have gone into getting them.
It took the sink turning on for you to snap out of your thoughts and return to reality. You liked the darkness in the bedroom , but it was making you sleepy again, so you got up and turned on the overhead light while Chuuya brushed his teeth and tongue. You could hear him coughing and decided you had a great opportunity to tease your boyfriend again, you figured since it ended quickly he was perfectly fine and there was nothing to worry about. "What happened, babe, did you fall asleep in there? Sounds like you're snoring." You say while pulling on some pants. "Shut up, it does not sound like that." His grin was practically audible through his voice and it was clearly contagious, because the next thing you know you had a matching one. You heard the water run again and turn off before some quiet rummaging, and then Chuuya re-entered the bedroom, walking up behind you and holding your hips while you searched for a shirt in the closet. You could hear him whistle quietly and rub circles into your bare skin. "You always look so good, baby, even when you've just rolled out of bed." He whispers, kissing your neck softly, nipping at your skin gently. "So do you, you're so gorgeous, Chuuya." You say, twirling some of his hair around your finger, making him hum.
"Again? Chuuya, you can't keep falling asleep and snoring everywhere." You tease again, pulling one of the hangers out of the closet and inspecting the shirt you chose. He rolls his eyes and spins you around to face him, snatching your shirt and tossing it to the side. "Shut yer trap 'nd kiss me already, you haven't yet this morning." He nearly whines, leaning in to press his lips against yours. Your hands fall on his cheeks, pulling him in closer and humming into the action. He briefly pulls away, looking you up and down before speaking in a mocking tone. "What happened babe, did you fall asleep? Sounds like snoring." He raises an eyebrow and watches you roll your eyes. "Fine, fine, I'll let it go.." you say, pulling him in for one more peck. "Mn-, you taste minty." You say, gazing into his blue eyes. "Yeah, well you don't. Go brush your teeth, you loser..." He playfully says, gently pushing past you by guiding you to the side with his hand on your hip. You could only assume he was gonna go get coffee or smoke a cigarette before getting dressed, so you just sighed and did as your lover suggested.
⑅Fyodor Dostoevsky⑅
• Cliche - Sweet and somber goodbye kisses before a long separation; Fyodor didnt like leaving you behind ever, let alone for extended periods of time, but if it was for what he thought would be the benefit of the world, then he knew he would have to at some point. It didn't make leaving any less difficult though.
ೃ⁀➷
Fyodor sat with you near a helipad, waiting to be taken to Japan. He informed you about the plan to end up in mersault and eventually terminate Dazai, but he couldn't give you an exact estimate on when he would be back- things were still patchy, after all. He had an arm around you with his head resting on yours, his hand rubbing your shoulder while you gloomily frowned. "Ah, don't be so sad, Myshka. I will have the vampires relay messages to you, I promise." He whispered, looking down at you. You sighed and sat up, scooching to turn your body towards him. "Yeah but the vampires aren't going to make tea with me or play the cello for me, and they're ESPECIALLY not going to sleep with me every night." You say with a large frown, your voice becoming wobbly with every word. "Sweetheart, please don't cry." He says, reaching out to cup your cheek. "I'll be back before you know it."
He leans in to kiss your lips so softly, his hand guiding your face impossibly closer to his with your noses bumping together. You let out a shaky sigh as your lips moved with his lovingly, tucking some of his hair behind his ear. When you pulled away, he also took an unsteady breath. "I promise. This is to make the world better, you know that." He says, his eyes searching yours for signs of some comfort or reassurance at his words, yet he found none. "I...know, it's just so dangerous, Fedya. You better come home, you hear me?" You say, gently grabbing onto his shirt and tugging at the fabric. He gives a small smile and runs his hand from your neck down to your shoulder. "No need to worry. You know I'll figure something out." He says. You could see the helicopter approaching the building and you felt your stomach drop, not yet ready to let your lover slip out of your grasp.
"There it is." Fyodor says quietly, rubbing your thigh and giving it a soft pat before standing up and helping you do the same. You sighed and looked at your feet while intertwining your fingers with Fyodors and giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "Can you tell it to turn around?" You ask, completely serious, but he just chuckles quietly. "No, unfortunately not. You'll be okay, y/n, I will send you letters." He tells you, stroking your cheek softly. You couldn't help but feel your gut pool with anxiety, but you nodded. "Okay. Just be careful, don't be stupid, I know that's hard for you, but just don't overlook anything." You demand, grabbing both his hands. He leans in to peck your lips as the helicopter starts to land, blowing his hair every which way. You couldn't help but laugh a little through your forming tears and help him keep his hair back for another kiss before he had to go. He leans in to yell over the sound of the helicopter. "I love you, I'll come back home safely, I promise, Moya Lyubov." He loudly says, squeezing your hands and giving you one final, loving kiss before pulling away and walking off to the helicopter. You cup your hands around your mouth and yell out to him. "I love you too, Fedya! You better!!" You call out, biting back your tears. You sniffled and wiped the escaped tears away from your cheeks and swallowed hard. He waved to you from the helicopter, barely catching your attention through your cloudy vision, but you manage to wave back. Your frown and tears make his sadder, but he can't go back now. You watch the vessel fly away with your lover inside, and no matter how hard you try to suppress your nerves, you have a lingering fear that he won't live up to his promise- that he won't come home.
Simon 'Ghost' Riley
Lieutenant Quick On His Feet here
He’s quick to react when you start to wobble on your feet, or when you start to falter in the speed of your actions.
He stands by your side and either waits for you to pass out or for you to start to feel better.
^ He more so does this if you pass out frequently, if it’s not a common occurrence then he’ll hold onto your arm lightly as if he was support.
John ‘Soap’ MacTavish
He’s the type to not expect you to pass out (even if it is an often occurrence and he knows that it is)
The minute he realised you’ve passed out, you’re legs have given up and he’s already cursing out trying to catch you before you hit the ground
Now, don’t worry for he is a sergeant and his reflexes are pretty good (most of the time). You’ve never actually injured yourself because he might have been a little too delayed in catching you
Kyle 'Gaz' Garrick
Not as quick as Ghost in a way that Ghost is able to catch you before you hit the ground.
Gaz obviously isn’t about to let you hit your head, but it is a delayed reaction from him to the point where your knees have already given in and are about to hit the ground
He sits in the floor with you, your head on his lap if you’ve passed out once he gets to you.
He’d brush the hair from your face and quietly whisper that he’s there for you and that you’re okay, even if you can’t hear him and wait for your eyes to open again.
It’s a 50/50 chance you open your eyes to see a half-calm, half-panicked look on his face, or a opening your eyes to see him calm (but there’s something in his eyes that tells you his mf heart dropped).
Captain John Price
If you pass out when the two of you are at home, then he’s picking you up and setting you down on the sofa or bed (depending on where you passed out)
He’s mostly quick, like Ghost, because he rushes over when you give the slightest indication you’re about to pass out
You can thank the military for his wariness, but his wariness for you is a totally different thing
Rodolfo 'Rudy' Parra
Quick just like the others (I know this sounds like a damn broken record with the amount of times I’ve wrote this), however, unlike the others the concern on his face is as clear as day. No point in hiding it, you know he cares enough about you
When you wake up again, he’s asking if you want anything, like if you have low iron he’s asking if he can get you anything to eat that might remedy that. It was because of the heat? Okay, he’s so fucking quick to ask if you need a drink.
Even if you don’t need a drink, or food, he’s grabbing it regardless. He cares so much about your well being, you wonder if he cares more about it than you do
Alejandro Vargas
Has a little mini heart attack. And (if you pass out regularly) even asks you if you’re trying to kill him with the amount of times you pass out
If it’s a less occurring thing, he’s less obligated to try and pick out little signs that you might pass out (because he wouldn’t really need to)
But if you pass out often, he is so quick to realise when you are feeling even slightly dizzy, or the first to realise when you’re stalling in your movements, sometime even before you realise!
This mf is like a mind reader too, it’s like he just knows. You don’t even have to say anything and he’s ushering for you to sit down before you pass out, hands on your sides as if you can’t walk without him
The key difference to McLaren that makes Ricciardo's revival real
Ricciardo drives the car very differently to regular driver Yuki Tsunoda, but also to Pierre Gasly - who was Alpha Tauri’s spearhead for several seasons. They prefer a later-braking approach with a sharp, later rotation - the V-style we often hear drivers talk about, and that Ricciardo wanted to move away from at McLaren but couldn’t. The way Ricciardo brakes and approaches a corner puts very different demands on the car and tyres, and requires (and instigates) a different kind of car behaviour. What you saw in Mexico was the result of Alpha Tauri really adjusting the car to that for the first time.
“The driving style is different and not only from the mechanical or aero platform, but we know the Pirelli tyres are quite sensitive,” says Alpha Tauri’s chief race engineer Jonathan Eddolls. “The way he drives we can see different tyre temperatures, different tyre temperature balance. We're not talking big numbers, it's not massive, but we can see differences in the way he drives. And he makes the laptime in different parts of the corner. Therefore he exposes different weaknesses to say Yuki does - he drives it in one way, Daniel in a slightly different way. So we just need a slightly different set-up direction for him.”
Ricciardo prefers to carry more speed through the corner by making it more of a ‘U’ shape. To do that he needs a little rear instability on entry to turn in, and enough grip to rotate the car mid-corner without the rear braking away. The McLaren had a lot of peak downforce but it was not always usable, making the car unstable and inconsistent to drive in certain corners and conditions. That was murder for Ricciardo’s preferences. And even now, in a McLaren regularly scoring podiums, Lando Norris says he wants to ‘U’ a corner but has to ‘V’ it off because the car can’t handle that.
Ricciardo admitted he’d had a limitation exposed by his failure to switch styles in the way Norris could, and even how Ricciardo’s replacement Oscar Piastri has. But give him the right car and he was adamant he could still work wonders. That’s what he seems to be moving towards with the AlphaTauri. But achieving that by pursuing this set-up direction was not the work of a moment. AlphaTauri started to experiment after the summer break but Ricciardo only managed one and a bit practice sessions at Zandvoort before breaking his hand.
Then the first attempt at his second comeback of 2023, at Austin, was hamstrung by it being a sprint weekend. Given it was his first race back, upgrades had changed the car’s behaviour in his absence, and the sprint format meant just the one practice session before qualifying, AlphaTauri played it safe and put Ricciardo on Tsunoda’s set-up. That didn’t really work for him. So it was all about getting to Mexico and working on different set-ups to try to unlock a bit more potential from the car based around his driving style. “One of his big limitations has been the front end,” says Eddolls. “So the [new set-up] directions have been able to improve the front end of the car for him, accepting the stability compromise and how that impacts the tyre temperatures through the corner and through the lap.”
It may sound surprising given this was his Kryptonite at McLaren but what Ricciardo has been clear on from the start at AlphaTauri is that he could live with a bit more rear instability. There were signs of this right back in Hungary, where Ricciardo drove the car for the first time. There, and in his second race in Belgium, there was some under-rotation in the car. While the AlphaTauri lacks the aerodynamic peaks of what Ricciardo was driving at McLaren, it seems to have a more stable platform. It’s consistent, and understandable. So Ricciardo actually found that he could cope with some more rear instability than it had, to help give him the front end he needed, without it prompting the kind of inconsistency in car behaviour that he could not handle the way Norris could at McLaren.
The key to understanding the difference is to consider that not all rear instability is the same. AlphaTauri has battled some specific corner entry trouble all season, mainly when its drivers were braking late into heavy braking zones. Given he generally struggled with rear instability at McLaren, it was initially a concern that this might be an issue for Ricciardo. But with the way he drives compared to Tsunoda, Ricciardo didn't counter the same issues with the AT04. Instead, Ricciardo knows what to expect from the car and is able to take it to its limits more comfortably.
“Probably the car that we've got, the characteristics, it behaves,” says Eddolls. “Maybe we haven't quite got the load or efficiency of some of the top teams. However, there's no big fundamental weaknesses of the car other than a lack of a bit of load. He knows what it's going to do. And the fact that it does the same thing, every lap, corner to corner, it's given him the confidence to be able to throw the car into the corners and know that it's going to stick and knows that it’s going to do the same every time. Once we've got that platform in those couple of races earlier in the season, then we can start working on changing the balance corner to corner or through corner with the set-up to try to extract a bit more performance. It's a car that's given him the confidence to be able to push it closer to the limit than maybe he had in McLaren.”
Since Ricciardo’s early races before the summer break, the team has added a bit more aero load through upgrades, and the new set-up direction has now unlocked an even more Ricciardo-friendly balance. In Mexico, Ricciardo was able to use the stronger front end to rotate the car through the corners more to his style - braking a little earlier but riding it a little longer, giving him the grip to turn the front in mid-corner and carrying speed through. The result was being at ease with the car in qualifying, visibly leaning on the front and throwing the car around more.
It doesn’t mean he was on another level to Tsunoda, who looked like he could have been just as quick were his qualifying not sacrificed because of a predetermined engine change and grid penalty. But it did mean Ricciardo was more at the limit of this car for the first time, and feeling more like his old self. This continued in the grand prix itself. The controlled tyre management and comfortable race pace was different to the vast majority of his grands prix for McLaren. Were it not for a red flag, Ricciardo probably would have finished fifth – the final stint suggests he’d have had the race pace to fend off George Russell’s Mercedes (who jumped him at the restart instead), and Norris would have been too far back to catch and pass him on his recovery drive from the back of the grid. Ricciardo also looked feisty at both the start and the post-red flag restart, doing a good job amid frenetic runs to Turn 1 and beyond, and even launched an attack on Russell the final lap. It didn’t quite come off, but how often did you see him able to try that in papaya?
“It was a little weird, at the start of the stint, I didn’t feel as good as towards the end,” Ricciardo said of the second part of the race. “It felt like it took me a little bit to get a rhythm with the tyre. Then the last probably 10 laps, I was able to really start pushing harder. Lando getting George probably hurt George’s tyres a little bit, so that brought him back to me. It was tough. I probably didn’t expect to get that close. When you’re that close, you’re like ‘ah, we could’ve!’. But he protected well in Turn 4. At one point, I was trying to go on the outside, but I could see we were both going to run off and had to abort the mission. We tried, but ultimately, just to be battling a Mercedes at the end, that makes me more happy than just missing out on sixth.”
Ricciardo probably does need a Red Bull Racing promotion to start doing that on a regular basis. Getting the most out of the car he has now must be the objective for the rest of the season – and on this evidence, it should be sustainable. “After last week, it’s funny,” he said. “You can never guarantee a good weekend [but] I’m not surprised we had a good weekend. I was just ready for it, and I think the direction we went with set-up, I knew that would allow me to have a bit more confidence with the car. There’s still certainly some things to get out of it. Even in the race, my first sector was a little average, I wasn’t very consistent there through the first chicane. For sure some things I could improve on, but overall I was very happy with the weekend.”
Never Hold Back Your Step... Part 5
Hey guys, back with this one! Again, I have a backlog to share with all so this should come out more regularly.
Just a reminder there isn't a set schedule anymore, just vibes. But if there is a story you want to see more often, let me know.
In this we have Steve's good luck charm, Gethin coming to Steve for help with the journalism schism, and Nancy and Steve finally having the talk they should have had from the beginning (she's not there 100% yet but it's better).
Pt 1 Pt 2 Pt 3 Pt 4
****
They went to nationals and lost. When Steve got back he joked that Eddie was his good luck charm.
“Get off, Stevie,” Eddie scoffed during lunch. “I am not.”
Gareth chuckled. “I don’t know, man. Steve’s luck has shot up since you guys became friends. He hasn’t been hit once!”
Steve glared at him. “Thanks, Gary.”
Gareth stuttered. “What the fuck is Gary?”
Everyone laughed.
“Don’t ever call me that again,” Gareth growled. “My name is Gareth.”
Steve tilted his head to the side. “But isn’t that where Gary comes from? A shortening of Gareth?”
“I don’t give a fuck, man,” he hissed. “If Gethin hears it, he’ll never let it go.”
Steve’s mouth formed an ‘O’ in understanding. It was like Dusty Buns. “That’s fair.”
“What’s fair?” Gethin asked from behind Eddie.
Jeff opened his mouth to answer but Gareth kicked him under the table.
“That my taking hits to the face have gone down since I started hanging out with Eddie,” Steve said with a smile.
Eddie rolled his eyes. “Stevie here seems to think that I’m his good luck charm.”
Gethin rubbed his chin. “I think Steve’s got something going with that.”
Eddie threw his arms in the air. “Not you too!”
Gethin started ticking off reasons on his fingers. “Billy has left him alone, he got a pretty major part in the school play, made it to nationals for swimming...need I go on?”
Eddie’s jaw dropped and he looked over at Steve in shock. “Holy shit. Maybe I am your good luck charm.”
Steve grinned. “Told you so.”
“Why are you here, Geth?” Gareth growled at his sibling. “Don’t you usually hang with the journalism crowd?”
Gethin grimaced. “There’s been a divide among us.”
Steve’s lip curled. “Let me guess, half you sided with Nancy over the swim team making it nationals and the other half thought she went too far?”
Gethin nodded. “Jonathan’s for too much, too far, but most of them think that jocks should be prosecuted more, not less.”
Eddie winced. He had espoused similar thoughts before befriending Steve.
But Steve just snorted. “Like she didn’t enjoy the benefits of dating one last year.”
The whole table erupted in stomping and pounding on the table.
“Ooh...” Jeff said. “Burn!”
Gethin grinned. “I’ll be sure to remind her of that fact. That last year she was all for sports when it pleased her. Thanks, Steve!”
Steve just shook his head.
Gethin skipped away from their table better armed against a furious Nancy.
Steve looked around to make sure that Jonathan and Nancy weren’t within hearing distance. Then he leaned forward.
“Who would be interested in a sequel comic to ‘The Boy With a Bat’?” he whispered conspiratorially.
Everyone else leaned in excitedly.
“What would this one be about?” Brian asked, his voice barely loud enough to be heard in the crowed cafeteria.
“Our hero helping out a bunch of kids in a junkyard fighting off dire wolves,” Steve whispered back in conspiratorial tone.
Steve had learned the term from Eddie. Apparently they were very big wolves. And that sounded to him like the right amount of ‘what the fuck’ the demodogs gave off.
“How did our hero get into that mess?” Eddie asked, his voice on the verge of cracking. He knew that these were things that Steve had gone through for real and that terrified him.
Steve let out a sigh. “By realizing that the kid with the high intelligence and the low wisdom would have gotten himself eaten if our hero hadn’t went along to protect him.”
Eddie’s mouth formed a silent ‘Oh.’ Yeah, there was no doubt that was Dustin. In the few times he had met the kid, he was always struck by how dumb he was despite being a literal fucking genius.
“That sounds so cool,” Gareth breathed. “I would love to read that, man.”
Jeff nodded. “Like you should serialize the whole thing and sell it, dude. You could make bank.”
Steve thought about the NDA that was sitting in a lockbox at the back of his closet and snorted. Those bastards would be on him faster than lightning.
“It’s just something fun to do while Mrs Click drones on and on about the Ottoman Empire,” he said with a shrug.
Eddie pointed at him and clapped. “Yes! Like how could one person take something so interesting and make it duller than dishwater.”
Steve smiled at him gratefully as the conversation shifted to horrible teachers. Eddie was still the only one outside of the “Party” that knew about the Upside Down.
He looked over at Nancy and found that she was glaring at him. He didn’t want to anger her further, so he got up and threw away his garbage. He stacked his tray up and bid the others goodbye.
If she wanted to speak to him, she would have to come to him.
****
Steve had to wait a couple of days, but Nancy did come to him.
It was one of those rare days where Steve didn’t have anything going on but the rest of the Hellfire Club crew did. So he was at his locker making sure that he had all his homework that he needed for the weekend after school.
He was alone for all intents and purposes.
“Steve,” Nancy said, “we need to talk.”
He slammed his locker shut and she winced. “Are you actually here to talk or are you here to excuse your bad behavior and get me to apologize even though I haven’t done anything wrong?”
She frowned at him. “I don’t do that.”
“Whatever, Nance,” Steve said, rolling his eyes and shouldering his backpack. “I don’t want to get into a screaming match right now.”
Nancy held out her hand to stop him. “Would you just wait?”
“Come on,” Steve said with a sigh. “We talk on the way out to my car.” At least if he needed to make a quick getaway, he’d be able to drive off.
He started walking toward the doors and she scrambled to catch up.
“I can’t believe you told Gethin to throw it back in my face that I used to date a jock,” she hissed.
Steve smiled at her smug. “Well you did, Nance. And as I recall, you flirted with me first.”
“Yeah, I did,” Nancy said, ducking her head. She let out deep sigh. “I just want to be a journalist. A real one. But the advisor for the newspaper only sees me as a girl so all I get are the fluff pieces like Homecoming Queen and King and sports like boys’ swimming because all the guys are uncomfortable with all the Speedos.”
Steve snorted. “Only you didn’t go after Ezra, or any of the other members of the team, you went after me. And you did it so hard that Jonathan who I’m pretty sure would hate my guts if I hadn’t saved his life, thought that you were being harsh.”
Nancy pursed her lips. She didn’t know why she went after Steve as hard as she did. She needed a target and Steve was right...there.
It had been so easy to lash out at him for Barb, the monsters, the frustration of not being taken seriously, for all of her problems. But she knew he didn’t deserve it.
“He told me that unless I fixed it,” she said softly, “that he would eat lunch and go home by himself.”
Steve laughed bitterly. “So you’re not even here because you think you need to apologize. You’re here because your boyfriend won’t put out until you do. Jesus Christ, Nancy. What even is this?”
He stopped in front of the doors. “I’m not your punching bag anymore. I’ve got friends now. Friends that really care about me, for me.”
Nancy sighed. “I’m not trying to start a fight.”
“Not this time,” Steve scoffed.
She winced, but nodded. “Yeah okay, I deserved that.” She lowered her voice and hissed, “It’s just really hard to fathom you liking men all of a sudden. We had sex, you got off. And now you’re with Eddie and gay and I just don’t know what to think anymore.”
Steve squeezed his eyes shut. He heaved a sigh and hauled her out to the parking lot where they were less likely to be heard.
“Fucking hell, Nance,” he huffed as they walked to his car. “You think I don’t realize how fucking messed up that is. I thought for a bit that maybe I liked both, because of what I felt for you. Because I did love you. I still do, for Christ’s sake.” He threw his arms in the air in frustration.
He tugged on his hair. “But the more I thought about us. Our relationship, I realized that I was just trying so hard to be what everyone wanted me to be.” He started waving his hands around as he tried to get his point across. “The perfect boy next door. But that isn’t me. I love theater and boys and not having to worry about who was fucking who and why. Because all that ‘King’ shit was exhausting as fuck.”
Nancy let out a low shuddering breath. “Okay. I’m sorry.” Steve scoffed. “No, I am. I mean it. You deserve to be happy and I don’t know why I’m still hung up on this.”
Steve raised an eyebrow. “Because you want me as your fall back in case shit goes down with Jonathan.”
“What?!” she squawked.
Suddenly everyone was staring at her because of her outburst. “That’s not true!” she whispered harshly, leaning forward.
“I’ve said it before and we both know it is, Nance,” Steve said, his face twisted in that same pained expression from when she couldn’t tell him she ever loved him. “You broke up with me right after our first go round with the monsters and then not even a full month later you were back with me. What happened, huh? Did Jonathan turn you down the first time and that’s why you came running back?”
Nancy crossed her arms and looked away.
Steve huffed out a bitter laugh. “That’s it, isn’t it? You couldn’t even tell me you loved me at all after our fight at Tina’s Halloween party. You’re standing there getting mad it me for not loving you, but you’re the same. You’re exactly the same.”
She let out a shuddering sigh. “You’re right, Steve. You’re right about all of it. I’m sorry.”
“That’s all I wanted from you,” he said, “an actual honest apology. Thank you.” Steve let out his own breath that he had been holding.
Nancy bit her bottom lip and looked up at him through her lashes. “Can we still be friends?” Her voice wobbled and her eyes were glassy with unshed tears.
Steve pulled her into a hug and she wrapped her arms around him tightly.
“Yeah,” he breathed. “Of course we can.”
Steve looked up and saw Jonathan watching them. He let go of Nancy and held her at arms length. “You are a great person, Nancy Wheeler, but you’ve got think past your own needs, okay?”
She nodded. “I’ll try.”
“Good,” he said gently. “Now go. Jonathan is waiting for you.”
She looked over her shoulder and nodded. “Thanks, Steve.”
“Yeah, of course.”
Steve watched as she walked away, he could feel a part of his wounded heart heal, just a little.
It wasn’t enough. It might not ever be enough. But it was a start. He just wished it didn’t feel like a fucking Chutes and Ladders game.
****
In order for Nancy to be a better person, she has to fight against her nature. Something that won't come easy.
How They Text the Reader Headcanons
↳ Characters included are Bruno Brucciarati, Leone Abbacchio, and Guido Mista. Gender Neutral Reader with they/them pronouns.
A/n: I’ve always wanted to try my hand at doing x Reader text messages! This was very fun to make, and I do plan to make more of this kind of headcanon list for the rest of Bucciarati’s team.
Warning(s): None.
Tumblr media
Bruno Bucciarati
Bruno’s text messages are straight to the point and utilize proper grammar like the mother he truly is deep down.
Not the type of person to send emoji’s… ever, really. This is because he views texting as a simple tool to use when he can’t just speak to you in person or over a phone call.
However, you prefer the funnier explanation of it actually being because he’s secretly very inept at using technology (this is very much so part of it he just won’t ever say so).
In all honesty, he prefers to call you and hear the sound of your voice more than communicating over text. He’s the type to call in order to converse about whatever mundane thing is on his mind instead of sending a text.
That said, he’s definitely the type to always tell you good morning or wish you goodnight with a sweet text message.
Also, because of his job, he’s often put into long-term situations where calling isn’t exactly ideal. That’s when he’ll text the most; he just wants to check up on you regularly when he can’t be there in person do so! This became especially true after rising to the position of Capo.
His text messages may seem… bland to those unfamiliar with him.
But since you know him as well as you do, they always ring as genuine and an extension of his polite kindness.
Admittedly, it is hard to argue against the fact that his straightforward style of text often leads to misunderstandings. This is due to his sometimes unreadable tone:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leone Abbacchio
Hardly ever texted you at the beginning.
Since the two of you started going out, he’s gotten a bit better, though. Before, he was very adamant that if he has something to say, he’ll wait when he’s face-to-face with you.
But when he eventually let it slip that he often forgets what he even wants to talk to you about, you slowly began getting him to text you more.
Arguably the best method of doing so is to get him to tell you about something he feels strongly about. Whether it’s something positive like asking him about the music he’s been listening to recently, or it’s something more devilish like bringing up subjects that really bother him.
Leone is at least very reliable.
Meaning that, although he doesn’t often start a conversation over text himself, he will respond to you reasonably quick.
Tease him by claiming it’s because he has a soft spot for you and he won’t text for an entire day (you know he loves you).
He also prefers to use proper grammar and punctuation in his texts. That said, Leone does use emojis (usually just to express disappointment) and sometimes can seem more expressive in text than he is in actual conversation.
One sweet thing he does over text is that he always sends you a message after he makes it home after a particularly dangerous mission, informing you that he’s safe. He knows you worry, and although he often puts up a front claiming it’s annoying, he truly does take note of that concern.
Abbacchio’s just not completely used to having someone like you in his life who holds a special concern for him. He is adjusting; slow and steady.
And although he forms the habit of texting you more, it’s you and only you he has the energy to do this for (outside of probably Bruno). This leads to other’s on Bucciarati’s team to text you when they want to get a hold of him:
Tumblr media
Guido Mista
Real talkative over text, especially in the evening after he’s finished with his dinner. He’s pretty expressive and uses a decent amount of emojis.
Will plop down on his couch with an exaggerated bounce, pull out his phone, only with the purpose of talking to you and doing nothing else on the device.
The two of you actually had to work on how late you’d stay up texting one another.
Hours disappearing in the blink of an eye and leaving you both extra tired the next morning. And on occasions that it was decided to take the conversation into a call… it’s easy to see why you both have slept in late more than once.
Although not as frequently as someone like Narancia, Mista will send memes every now and then. Not only that, but he always replies to the ones you send him.
He prefers to send you embarrassing or funny pictures of others in the group over memes, though. You’ve seen photos of Abbacchio and Fugo in particular that Mista could honestly use as blackmail.
This has bitten him in the butt quite a bit, though.
After discovering Mista’s been doing this, the others now send you every single unfavorable image they own of the gunslinger. Even Bruno’s sent his fair share.
And although Mista often forgets to say good morning to you through text, he always says goodnight to you.
Not only that, but Mista will text right after he’s completed with a mission. Although a bit of a goofball, he always takes work seriously, and will leave you on delivered on hours at a time depending on what he’s up to. But the minute things have calmed, he’s letting you know.
Mista will certainly ask one of his common out-of-pocket questions designed to get a conversation going via a text message.
This isn’t a bad thing per se, except for the fact that he has a bad habit of doing so at three in the morning.
Even still, they’re not the weirdest variation of texts you’ve ever received from him:
concerts • matt sturniolo
a/n: first matt post!! idk how i feel abt this one but i’ll post another matt one soon hope y’all like ittt
summary: you and matt go to a dominic fike concert together.
warnings: nothing just a lil fluff? not proofread.
Tumblr media
“guys guys guys!” you repeated, getting the triplets and madi’s attention.
“dominic fike is gonna be performing at camp flog gnaw, let’s go pleaseee,” you practically begged. dominic fike was one of your favourite artists and you knew the boys, especially matt, liked him too so there’s no way they’ll refuse.
“are you kidding? we have to go! when is it?” matt reciprocated your excitement.
“it’s this sunday, i know someone who can get us tickets on short notic-”
“oh, this sunday is the lil skies show we told you about.. a couple of our friends are going so we can’t cancel last minute sorry,” chris interrupted looking guilty that he let you down. you declined going to the lil skies show before since you don’t really listen to him.
“that’s okay, i’ll look for someone else to go with i guess,” you were kinda disappointed.
see, when you first befriended the triplets you instantly clicked with nick and chris, but matt was a little harder to crack…or maybe your crush on him made it difficult to say a word. but when the topic of music and dominic fike was brought up, that was the first time you two really bonded and it became your little thing.
one time you had a particularly bad day, you were stressed and going through a lot with your job, college and friends that you started to isolate yourself. matt noticed you hadn’t been answering his texts or hanging out with them for a while.
so without telling his brothers he drove all the way to your house, you were so embarrassed of him seeing you in this state. but all he cared about was your well-being. he sat down next to you and listened intently to your venting without interrupting. he held you in his arms and rubbed your back as you cried and let it all out. he made you feel safe and comfortable.
“get up,” he said as you calmed down. he took you by the hand and gestured for you to go to your room. confused, you furrowed your eyebrows and turned to give him a questioning look.
“wash your face and change into something comfortable, just trust me.” that was all you needed to hear as you went to do exactly what he said. once you were done, he took your hand again and led you outside to his car where he opened the passenger door for you and closed it gently after you were seated.
“where are we going?” you asked as he got adjusted in the driver’s seat.
“somewhere, anywhere, i didn’t really think this through ngl,” he giggled nervously, “but whenever i felt down, going for a drive and listening music always helped, so i thought it would help you too- this is goofy it probably won’t i’m sor-”
“that’s perfect, matt.” you smiled trying to hide the creeping blush on your face. seeing how caring and nervous he is right now made you feel giddy inside. he smiled back shyly and started the car.
you got takeout and listened to dominic fike the entire time, singing your hearts out and laughing at how awful you both sounded, at how silly you probably looked playing an air guitar, but you didn’t care. you’ve never felt so free and happy and without realizing it you were falling more and more for matt.
eventually he parked in a dark, deserted area and opened the roof of the car, “this is the best place for stargazing, it always calmed me down,” he said making you both look up at the stars.
you sat in silence for a few minutes listening to his playlist shuffle. until ‘why’ by dominic fike started playing and you both sat up straight singing and dancing along, you singing extra loud relating to the lyrics and matt admiring you, happy he got you out of your bad mood.
this was the beginning of your “little thing”, you regularly went cruising together listening to dom, and eventually it turned into you two hanging out alone more often. that’s why you wanted to go to the concert. it was your thing. but live this time.
“i’ll go with you,” matt blurted.
“you will?”
“yeah, i’ve already seen skies plenty. not passing up on this opportunity,” there was a sudden tension in the room between you two, you knew what he meant. the others remained clueless as you both shared a knowing smile.
the day of the concert you felt a bit anxious, maybe it was seeing dom for the first time, or going to a concert alone with matt, or both. it seemed like a couple-y thing to do. it also didn’t help that matt was acting like your boyfriend.
holding your hand, guiding you everywhere, placing his hand on your lower back or around your arm while squeezing past the crowd of people. he even told you you look pretty, which he never did before.
as dom opened with one of his songs you were already screaming and jumping in excitement causing matt to chuckle at how cute you were. you spent the entire time reenacting your cruising time but live in concert, singing, dancing, jumping around.
some lyrics you would sing to each other looking straight into the other’s eyes. it felt like you were the only two people there. the last song that played was ‘why’, you both shared a look remembering the first time you hung out alone. you wanted to sing along so badly but the way matt was looking at you made you forget where you were and what you were doing.
you were suddenly nervous again, he looked so beautiful with the light hitting his face, his hair messed up from jumping around, and his face flushed from how cramped it was. you wanted to kiss him so bad.
luckily, he was thinking the same thing as he slid one hand up your neck, cupping your jaw and the other on your waist and leaned in to kiss you. no one would believe you but fireworks actually started going off in that same moment almost representing how you both felt from the inside. you wrapped your arms around his neck and pulled him even closer deepening the kiss while he smiled against your lips relieved that you reciprocated his feelings.
as you both pulled away the song got to the more upbeat part, he held your hand and you started singing along again with a new rush of adreline running through your veins lasting the entirety of the show.
on the way home you got some food and talked about the night you had and your feelings for each other. safe to say you don’t relate to ‘why’ anymore but it’ll forever be a special song to you and matt.
y/n always loved the off season because it meant that she could spend more time with her beloved quinn, wether it was in vancouver or michigan. where they were didn’t matter, as long as they were together. it had been like that for years, until this year. this off season she was stuck in vancouver. with it being summer and all, many of her co-workers opted to take vacations, leaving the office short on people. y/n being the nice person she was, decided to take one for the team and work through her summer.
quinn planned on staying with his girlfriend but she knew he missed his family and urged him to go home to michigan to visit with them. to combat the fact that they weren’t going to be together, they set up a schedule with certain dates and times where they would sit down and chat over the phone. sometimes the call would take place over facetime, which often times of you were alone would lead to sexy times
unfortunately for y/n tonight wasn't a phone date night. after having a crummy day at work and desperately missing her quinn, she just really wanted hear his voice and maybe see his face. ideally she would love to curl up into his side as he held her, but she was going to take what she could get. and sure they had been messaging all day long but it wasn't anything compared to hearing his voice
"hey queenie. im a little busy right now what's up?" quinn inquired. he was currently out on the boat with his brothers and a couple of others. it wasn't the ideal place to have a conversation but since it wasn't a regularly scheduled time something must have been up.
even though it had been an unplanned call quinn was always willing and wanting to talking with his girlfriend. she was his everything. it had physically pained him when he had to leave her behind in canada. he wished like hell that he could have brought her along with him to michigan, but he understood how important her job was to her.
"i just need to hear your voice. today wasn’t good and i need you.” her voice was soft and quiet a hard combination to hear over the boat’s motor. but it had sounded a little bit off to him, there was a certain sadness oozing out of it.
"y/n? what's up? are you okay?” he pulled the boat to a stop as best he could. they hadn't started wake boarding yet, so no one was in the water. he could tell she was about to say something when he noticed the phone no longer in his hand.
"no phones quinn!" jack plucked he mobile device from his brother's grasp. there was a rule that bee put in place some time ago that no phones were allowed on the boat. of course they still brought them in case of emergencies, but that was their only purpose. this was friends and family time, everything else could wait.
"come one man, can i have it back? it's y/n" quinn tried to get his property back from his younger brother. "please jack."
"oh it's queenie? pass it here jack!" luke jokingly used the nickname that had been reserved only for quinn to use. the younger boy made grabby hands towards the thing in his older brother’s hands to which jack happily gave him, mischievous smiles dancing around their faces. holding the phone up to his ear, luke started to speak mimicking quinn's voice the best he could.
"queenie, darling, sweetie pie, my cutie patootie. you are the love of my life. i miss you so much. my love for you is endless. i want to marry you and have ten babies, three dogs, a cat and, maybe a fish!" the youngest sibling finished his little speech by making kissing noises into the receiver of the phone, causing everyone on the boat to erupt into laughter. everyone except quinn, who's face was beet red.
"luke come on. please, give it back" quinn began begging luke to stop and give him his phone back.
"but i'm not done talking to y/n. we still have things to discuss." luke giggled holding the device out of quinn's reach, coincidentally over the edge of the boat. “i haven’t told her about the big house yet!”
he had had enough. he was going to get the electronic back. climbing over his brother, quinn reached as far as he could and almost got it before the phone was knocked out of luke's hand. everyone watched in horror as the mobile device sunk to the bottom of the lake.
to say he was mad would be an understatement, quinn hughes was furious. y/n called him sounding like she was having a hard time with life and their summer distance and his stupid little brother had to go and dropped his phone.
"im sorry. i didn't mean for that to happen quinn." luke apologized profusely, but quinn wasn't listening anymore. sitting back down in the driver's seat, he turned the boat around, heading back for home base, so he could call her back on his computer.
y/n felt her phone vibrating in her pocket before she heard the deafening ringtone she programed into her phone letting her know that it was her favorite boy calling her. the caller was confirmed when she unlocked her phone, accepting the call and quinn's face popped up on the screen. once she answered and pleasant greetings were given, quinn listened as y/n ranted about her bad day throwing in an i’m sorry and a i love you every once in a while, and she did the same for him when it was his turn to complain about the people he was with.
“so what happened before?” y/n placed an elbow on the table and her head on her fist. she felt a lot better now that she was talking with her boo.
“it’s kind of funny, but it’s not funny.” quinn launched into the story of what happened after luke said what he did and why he was on a computer and not his phone.
“you really want to marry me? and start a family of ten with a couple of dogs and cats?” y/n joked about what the youngest hughes had said. a smile appearing on her face, that made quinn feel warm inside despite being thousands of miles away.
of course he did, he loved her and even had a ring picked out, he was just waiting for the right moment. the only thing he wasn’t sure about the ten kids. but who knew maybe a big family was in their future.
Dreaded Sickness
Request:
Hi!! I love your writing so much. It's so refreshing to see some fluff. I was wondering if you could do something where the reader has a cold or the flu, and Noah takes care of them. I've been a lil stuffy lately and feel like this would be super cute. 💕
Word Count: 1800ish
Noah Sebastian x reader
No warnings.
Noah Master List
An: hope you enjoy this! I tried not to sound too cliché. Let me know what you think💜
Tumblr media
Being sick was your worst nightmare. You took vitamins regularly, washed your hands constantly, and wore masks at work.
You avoided touching door handles; if you ever heard someone was sick, you would avoid contact with them.
Noah found it humorous and often teased that you needed to be put in one of those plastic hamster balls, and he would carry you around.
He'd never seen you sick for the three years you had been dating, so it was all new to him when you left work early and texted him: I'm dying.
He saw you this morning when you left, and you looked ok. He assumed you got the sniffles and were overreacting, but when he saw you in the bedroom with the blankets covering every inch of your body, concern rushed to his core.
"Oh, babe." He whispers, sitting at the edge of the bed; his hand falls to your shoulder. A frown on his lips when he hears you struggling to breathe. He gently sets his hand on your forehead, gauging your body's temperature.
Your eyes flutter open at his touch, "Hey." You quietly groan while pushing yourself into a seated position. What a mistake that was; your body feels heavy, and sitting up feels like a chore. All the blood rushed to your head, making you feel like passing out.
Noah wraps his tattooed arm around your body, bracing for the impact of you against his chest. "What happened to you?" He asks, running his fingers through the ends of your hair.
You sigh, "I feel like shit, and everything hurts." You gently pull out of his arms and collapse back on the bed. You pull the blankets back to your face and close your eyes.
"Are you just stuffed up?" He lies beside you on the blankets, propped up on his elbow to observe you. You look a little flushed, your lips are dry from breathing through your mouth, and your eyes are a bit puffy from rubbing them.
"I don't know." You whisper, turning on your side to face the wall. You feel his hand rub your back soothingly.
"Do you want to try a bath? I can get it started." He offers.
"I don't think I can walk there." You softly say. "I don't even know if I have control over my limbs right now."
Noah chuckles, "Good thing I've had lots of practice carrying you around." He sits up and walks over to the bathroom that connects to your room. "I'll be right back."
You hear the water turn on, and Noah hums while waiting there. You're grateful for him and don't want to be rude, but part of you wants him to let you sleep.
You can only imagine what he's filling the tub up with. Bubbles, bath salts, bath bombs…there was a wide variety to choose from, but knowing him, he would overdo it. You were too tired to care. You hear the water turn off, and his footsteps gradually get closer.
"Ready?" He asks, slowly pulling the blankets down your body. "Do you want me to carry you?" He doesn't give you time to answer before he slips an arm under your back and the other under your legs, pulling you to the edge of the bed.
It always surprised you when he picked you up without an issue, no groans, no sighing, and no complaints.
You wrap your arms loosely around his neck, "It's so cold."
He frowns, feeling your body shiver against him. "I know, babe. It's only for a second." He brushes his lips against your forehead. "You're going to be ok. I promise. I'm here."
Noah lowers you to the floor, and a groan escapes your lips as the cold tile chills your skin. He removes your clothes, flings them aside, and then offers you his hand. You cling to him as he guides you into the bathtub.
You sigh as the heat wraps around you, soothing your aching body. You were reluctant to do this, but you're thankful Noah convinced you.
The water feels smooth and gentle, with lavender bubbles and elderberry oils nourishing your skin.
Noah squats beside you, his brown eyes sparkling with happiness as he watches you rest your head and close your eyes. He feels proud of himself for giving you some relief.
He loves seeing you happy and relaxed; it makes him happy, too. He thinks about how lucky he is to have you in his life. He never thought he'd find such a connection with someone, but here you were, constantly making him realize the amount of love he could truly feel for someone. “Do you need anything else?” He wonders aloud.
You shake your head slightly. “No, but can you stay in here?” You ask him softly. "I feel like I'm going to fall asleep, and I don't want to drown." You think about how lucky you are to have him in your life, how much easier life has been with him by your side. The comfort he gives you, how much love he shows you.
You think about how he always knows what to say or do to make you feel better, to make you laugh, to make you smile, to make you feel safe. You think about how he’s everything you ever wanted, everything you ever needed, everything you ever dreamed of.
He sits on the tile and leans back against the wall, “Of course.” He says without any hesitation.
A smile pulls at your lips, “I’m glad you found me.” You whisper.
He chuckles, watching you sink deeper into relaxation, “I’m glad I found you too.”
He smiles at you with a nostalgic look in his eyes. “Do you remember the first time we met?” He asks you, thinking about the moment that changed everything.
You had caught his attention on Instagram with a video you recorded singing. He wanted to collaborate with you on a duet. He sent you a message and asked you politely. You replied and declined him firmly. You told him that his music wasn’t suitable for your voice and that you didn’t have the experience he was looking for.
He didn’t give up, though. He kept sending you messages and trying to persuade you. He complimented your voice and your style. He told you how much he admired your talent and your passion. He said he had a perfect song for you and would love to hear you sing it with him.
You resisted his charm for two more months, but he was persistent and persuasive. You finally agreed to give him a chance, but you warned him that he would regret wasting his time.
The moment he saw you in person, his life changed.
You walked into the studio with a confident smile and a casual outfit. You wore jeans and a T-shirt that showed off your curves. You had your hair in a ponytail and sunglasses on your head. You looked calm and relaxed like you did this every day.
He was stunned by your beauty and your charisma. He felt his heart skip a beat and his mouth go dry. He greeted you warmly and introduced you to his producer and his bandmates.
They were all friendly and welcoming. You shook their hands and complimented their work. You made them laugh with your jokes and your wit. He could tell they liked you instantly.
He led you to the recording booth and handed you a pair of headphones and a microphone. He explained the song he had written for you and played a demo for you. It was a romantic ballad with a catchy chorus, the complete opposite of what you'd heard from him. You listened attentively and nodded along. You liked the melody and the lyrics. You told him it was a beautiful song and you were honored to sing it with him.
He pressed the record button and signaled you to start. You took a deep breath and sang the first verse with your powerful voice. It was sweet and soulful, full of emotion and expression. He joined you in the chorus, and you felt yourself melt at the sound of his voice. You harmonized perfectly and felt a spark between you.
The song ended, and he clapped his hands enthusiastically. He praised your performance. You had a few hours of goofing off but also moments of seriousness.
You followed him to the control room, where he played the song for you, and you both listened with admiration. It sounded like magic. You felt proud of what you had created together.
Noah admitted to you he had been following your Instagram for a long time and that he was a big fan of your voice. He said he had always wanted to work with you and was glad you finally agreed. He said he had enjoyed every moment of singing with you and that he felt a special connection with you. He asked you out the next day.
"I thought I was going to pass out." Noah laughs, "Can you believe that was three years ago?" He asks you.
You nod, "Best three years of my life. Thanks for continuing to try." You softly say. You slowly sit up in the bath and blink your eyes a few times, ready to get up, a yawn falling from your lips. "Can you hand me the towel?"
Noah stands up and grabs the towel, reaching for your hand to help you step out. He wraps the towel around your body and leads you to the room. "Go sit." He says, pointing to the bed; he walks away to the dresser and grabs you some fresh clothes, bending down in front of you. He starts at your legs and walks to your top, sliding your shirt over your body. He gently kisses your nose, making you giggle. "I love you." He quietly says.
"I love you too. Thank you for being so thoughtful."
Noah shrugs as you get back under the blanket and curl on the pillows. "You make it easy." He tucks the blankets under your body, making sure you won't get cold. He sits next to you, crawling in bed and pulling you close to him. He kisses your temple, "I want you to get some rest, OK?"
You nod, "I'll try to sleep, but don't go too far, please." You softly say, snuggling into his chest. "I'm scared I'm not going to wake up."
Noah smiles, melting at the idea of you needing him. "You're going to be ok, princess. I'll be right here when you wake up." He closes his eyes, getting comfortable beside you, drifting into a peaceful slumber.
He hopes that when you wake up, this nightmare will be over, but until then he will lay here keeping you safe in his arms.
as a starting history major i wanna ask how do you read/evaluate academic history papers/books? i'm trying to avoid just blindly agreeing with whatever the author is writing because it seems correct. how can you tell what is good scholarship and what is more shaky?
This is a great question for you as a freshman history major to ask (many of my toiling colleagues and I can attest that we wish more of you would!) and shows that you're already taking initiative and investment in your studies and want to be the best prepared you can. So truly -- thank you! Us on the faculty/staff/administrative end of academia can feel as if we are pouring into an empty bucket at times, and it's always gratifying to hear otherwise. We really appreciate it.
As a college freshman and/or underclassman (or so I'm assuming) your first job is learning how to collect basic information from the things you read, collate and cite them accurately, and make them converse intelligently with each other in an entry-level piece of academic writing (such as an essay responding to an assigned prompt). So before you have to worry about understanding complex nuance and granular-level fact-checking, the first step is just getting comfortable with academic forms, styles, and conventions. There's an occasional anti-intellectual strand of thinking that pops up on Tumblr, basically insisting that everyone everywhere should be able to understand everything in fifth-grade words and if not then it's Elitist Gatekeeping, but this is a symptom of TikTok brainrot where people's brains have been literally rewired to only process spoon-fed chunks of incredibly simplistic (and uh, often wrong) information, and literally can't parse anything longer, even if it's written in accessible language. Yes, many academics are not necessarily great writers, but you also have to let go of the mindset that you can speed-read once and understand everything. You will need to slow down, take your time, and make a note of concepts that are confusing or that you want to double-check, words you need to look up, and things that make you say "hmm I should look into that more," whether because you're interested or they seem questionable. I always read academic texts or papers (I prefer hard copy, because I am Fucking Old) with a pen in hand, because if I don't, I often feel like I didn't read it at all.
Basically, this is an interactive process between you and the text, and requires you to develop a different kind of reading mentality than just buzzing through a novel or fanfic for pleasure. You have to expect that it will take time and that if you regularly skive off the readings, you won't be prepared for class, your professors will be annoyed, and you won't be able to write good essays, because you haven't engaged with the material. In your case, it sounds like that will be less of a problem, because you are eager to know how to do it right, but I can tell you from my experience that nothing frustrates us more than students who just won't do the reading (and you know, use ChatGPT to write their essays) because then what are you even DOING here? What do you want to get out of this? Why are you wasting your precious tuition money like this? Yes, you probably have to fill a requirement, but STILL. It's disrespectful to your teacher, who has invested a lot of effort in being here to help you with this and doesn't want you to just quit because it looks hard, and your peers, and to you. So anyway, /Captain Holt voice/ apparently that's a trigger for me. Basically, if you learn nothing else from this ask: please do the reading. Even if it's only to admit you need more help or want to talk about this concept in class or otherwise take advantage of all the structures that are in fact there to help you understand it! Thankee.
Likewise, because you're an underclassman, you have an advantage in that your teacher will select the class readings for you ahead of time. That means you will be receiving things that a professional has already checked, decided are useful and trustworthy, and you don't have to do independent research and vetting yourself (that will come if you decide for some godforsaken reason to pursue graduate and/or doctoral study). So you don't need to spend tons of extra time and effort deciding if the sources given to you in class are reliable on a basic and functional level; your professor has already done the work for you to make sure that they are. Your job is now to read those sources, keep a record of what they say (hence the aforementioned pen or other way to make quick notes) and figure out how to put them together in an essay. For example, if Author A cites Factor A as, say, the main cause of the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and Author B insists that Factor B was in fact more critical, what is your best approach to reconciling that information? You would search in the rest of those texts to see what else they say in support of their position, and you would probably end up with a qualified statement to the effect of, "While Author A argues A, Author B thinks B, representing the lack of consensus and the difficulty in attributing one single cause to an event as complicated as the fall of Rome." (And then because you're smart, you would go on to mention Byzantium and the Eastern Roman Empire and show that you are aware of the further context.) All of which is true! Historians do that all the time! You don't need to select THE RIGHT ANSWER and vigorously discredit all other theories, ever, and we tend to look suspiciously on people who do (cough cough Philippa Langley).
In other words, we are certainly not expecting you as a freshman, and even as a more advanced student, to be able to pick out ONE ANSWER from the material. We just want to see evidence that you have in fact read it, are able to evaluate and place theories side by side and possibly make a judgment as to which one you find more compelling, and also to properly cite where you got that information. We've seen a lot recently about plagiarism and that being the pretext on which Harvard president Claudine Gay was forced to resign (which is a whole other can of worms, but never mind). A lot of professors think that saying "Don't Do Plagiarism" is enough, but then don't explain what it is and the different forms it can take. It's not just a matter of copying verbatim chunks of someone else's work (or you know, ALL OF IT, like certain recently discredited YouTube scumbags) and acting like it's your own. If you are relying substantially on someone else's work, whether in their wording, arguments, conclusions, structure, or anything else, even if you've changed some of the words (yep, still plagiarism!), that needs to be cited appropriately according to the relevant style guide. Direct quotes from anyone need to go in quotation marks or indented blocks and have the author cited immediately afterward. History usually uses Chicago, MLA, or MHRA, and you can find cheat sheets for how to do that online. It's a pretty simple and straightforward style, and your professor will be extra impressed.
If you're expected to do an independent project or a senior research thesis, as some undergraduate history students do, then it will come when you have already had three years of experience in reading, evaluating, and writing historical scholarship, you will probably have a faculty member assigned to you for one-on-one mentoring and personalized feedback sessions, and they will be able to provide suggestions and support for useful sources. So even then, you still don't have to do it entirely on your own. They'll probably also be MORE than happy to debate with you which ones are good and which ones are suspect, because it's all a part of developing your ability to flex that muscle for yourself. (And as noted, faculty members Will Have Strong Opinions.) That likewise doesn't mean you just have to copy whatever they say (at least if you have a good teacher who wants you to think for yourself and not just be a mini-clone of their pet theories), but it means that by the time you reach that stage, you will have been prepared enough to feel confident in taking more steps on your own. I think not enough people realize that studying history (or anything, really) isn't just throwing you out there and being like "tough luck sucker, do it all yourself."
That's why academia is so collaborative, why plenty of historians with doctorates and tenure will still have to say "I don't know, let me get back to you" when someone asks them a question at a conference, and you don't have to fear that if you don't have The One Right Answer, you will be immediately exposed as a fraud and thrown out. History as a discipline is also moving away from the 19th-century German approach that attempted to systematize it as a singular social science with One Right Answer, and to focus more on multiple perspectives and incomplete answers. That's why the goal is not necessarily to know everything (which alas, is impossible), but to make better sense of what we can know and search for ways in which the existing record is flawed and needs to be revised, expanded, or reworked with new perspectives (which have existed all this time, but haven't been privileged by the white male western academy for the obvious reasons). And that work is fun and important! I don't want you to be scared of getting to that point, because someone will be there to support you the whole way and by the time you do, it will make sense to you in a way it probably doesn't right now, just because it's a new skill and like any new skill, it takes a long time to learn and to be able to apply confidently, consistently, and at a high level. And plenty of us who do it as a career still often have to say "I don't know, let me ask Dr. So-and-so who specializes in this," so yeah. It's a process of becoming comfortable with both learning how to answer what we can, and to ask others for help with that, and it never really ends. Which is the fun part. There's so much more to do.
Good luck!
NICE my post got two notes anyways here's my thoughts on the pines fam handling over/understimulation as a neurodivergent and mentally ill family in my own personal canon
putting this under a readmore again because uhhh as always with my headcanons there's a lot and it'll probably be annoying to scroll thru over and over
if anyone else has any thoughts about this feel free 2 add onto this post <3 <3 <3 would love to hear it!!!!! ^_^
starting off with mabel, obviously she CRAVES stimulation so so badly and is constantly looking for something new to do, to the point where her default state is Slightly Overstimulated. i figure she also struggles with emotional dysregulation (even worse because mabel is literally just a kid and isnt equipped to handle heightened emotions with grace just yet sdfjjds) and she absolutely canNOT be understimulated or else she will explode the ENTIRE state of oregon. however a couple too many unpleasant sounds or textures or tastes at once and her entire day is ruined- well, it's not really, but it sure feels like it at the time. she starts angry crying and hitting things and only really calms down when she is completely separated from whatever was upsetting her or vice versa (her threshold for the amount of overstimulation she can handle before snapping probably lowers Significantly post-weirdmageddon), having waddles with her usually cheers her up a lot quicker though<3
ford is actually similar to her in a few aspects here, he too is running as far away from understimulation as possible, always sitting in his room tinkering with some new invention or running around catching some new creature to occupy himself. (he wasn't always like this! as a kid, between him and stan he was definitely and obviously the more docile one. but as an adult he feels the need to seek stimulation moreso because he needs to distract himself from his constant stream of often unpleasant thoughts) this has the unpleasant side effect of isolating himself from the people around him, but it's not intentional, it's just that busying himself with projects and studying the supernatural is his Default Solution to having nothing to do. it's comfortable for him. he also has the Thing where if he isn't explicitly invited to join someone, he doesn't feel comfortable doing so, even if he really wants to.
dipper and stan are completely different from mabel and ford in that they just. nobody ever told them that understimulation is not the default state of existing for everyone else??? so they just??? Put up with it regularly???? dipper stims frequently without realizing to combat this- clicking/chewing on pens over and over and pacing his room for example, but more often than not it isn't Quite Enough and he doesn't know Why. this is also why dipper's anxiety is So bad- sitting around without making an effort to distract himself from his many thoughts will often get him catastrophizing within minutes (him and ford probably bond over having Too Much Thought Head Full). in fact, if he didn't have mabel around to remind him to have fun and use his time wisely instead of getting stuck inside his own head for hours on end he would probably be a very different and much less emotionally stable person than he is in the show jsdjfjsda
stan doesn't stim very much except when he's genuinely scared or upset, in which case he is cracking his knuckles, gripping onto the closest fabric so hard it almost tears, pulling off his cuticles, picking at scabs etc etc (you can imagine how much he fucked up his skin in the days following both instances of him losing ford). he probably had very different habits when he was a kid though- because come on. stan was totally the poster child for audhd, constantly running around and being loud to satisfy his lil brain. however within a few years certain nd behaviors stop being "cute" to others and instead start attracting a shit ton of ridicule so now his only stims are ones which are inconspicuous and could be passed off as stress habits instead of being a clear sign of neurodivergence- plus he probably ended up developing shittier coping mechanisms while running around for 10 years after getting kicked out. but it's not like he can smoke or drink all the time with the kids (wendy and soos included) around though so his options are kinda limited
Hello! Big fan! I had a couple of questions that I'd been wondering about. I hope they don't sound accusatory, I don't mean them that way, I was just curious to see if I was understanding. Basically, I started re-reading to catch all the little differences and I noticed two things:
April was touching Donnie pretty regularly out the gate. Does he not have trouble with her touch?
2. In light of chapter 23, I'm curious how Donnie can notice the second Viola-chan is upset through a mask, but missed all the romantic cues?
Feel free to answer, one, none, or both. I'm sorry if they've been asked before and, again, just thank you for sharing your work with all of us! Have a wonderful day!
wow!! excellent eye, anon-chan! that's the first time someone has noticed! or at least mentioned it. i'm very impressed! :0
so this hasn't come up yet, but to some extent, april can touch donnie, sort of, over his clothes and on his shell. he really prefers her not to and gets irritable when she does, but when there's something going on (...like donnie being nasty to viola-chan in chapter 2) she's going to do something about it (like pinching him or smacking his shell; also to stop him from saying something nasty after mistaking viola-chan for an anti-mutant bigot). but that's as far as they go. anything more than a brief touch, donnie doesn't tolerate it, and it's quite rare.
you may have noticed that april is less surprised than the others when she hears that donnie touches viola-chan, and that's why. to her, it's not as. hm. shocking? there's actually a scene coming up uh... soon-ish... chapter after next maybe? where april talks to viola-chan about this very thing. so i shan't say more on the topic!
as for your second question, donnie doesn't know what's wrong with viola-chan in chapter 23. all he knows is that, for some reason, she's masking, and that disturbs him. it's quite common for autistic people to study others in an attempt to learn how to mirror their emotions and to mask. (i do this myself without realizing it often times, and on purpose if i'm, like, in a business meeting or talking to someone important.)
donnie, being the way he is, over the course of turtle time and also just from spending time with viola-chan, has done this to an extreme. he's meticulously catalogued every little twitch her face can make, across a wide berth of emotional states. recordings of her voice. thorough examinations of her movements. he knows her. so when she starts acting strangely out of nowhere, in a manner that seems artificial, he takes note. then, when he sees how viola-chan reacts to leo, that's when he puts together that the masking is something from a place of harm, and that leo is likely the cause. hence begins the interrogation.
i'd go into a deeper analysis of donnie's emotional state for viola-chan and romance specifically, but... hm.... that's perhaps leaning a bit into spoiler territory. by which i mean i started to answer this like. three different ways and kept butting against spoilers, hahaha so i shan't say any more on that, either!
anywho thank you for your ask, and i hope that cleared things up. uh. a little tiny bit since a lot of it is "you'll learn soon" as an answer hahahaha
It’s 1994, just over 10 years since their first brush with the Upside Down.
Steve still lives in Hawkins, in a little house of his own on the outskirts of town. His life isn’t wild or exciting but he wouldn’t want it to be. He’s had enough of that, to be quite honest. No, he’s comfortable and safe and, most of all, he’s happy.  He’s got a nice job in town, coaching at the middle school, and volunteers at the community centre when he can. Somehow, he’s once again found himself to be a beloved figure in Hawkins, but instead of the weight of his high school crown and the cruelty that came with it, it’s because the town knows him as someone who cares, someone who puts himself out there to help and support the community. The kids come and go, so do Robin and Nancy. Only Max, Lucas, and El still live in Hawkins, but Steve sees everyone else often enough.
He misses Eddie. Of course he does. Between touring and recording new albums and photoshoots and interviews, there’s not much time to come back to Hawkins since Corroded Coffin got big. Still, they call regularly and Eddie sends him the cheesiest ‘Wish You Were Here’ postcards from every stop on the road. Steve has a shoebox full of them, and his favourites are stuck to the fridge with colourful magnets.
The most recent tour ended a few weeks ago, but the band is in LA writing a new album that Steve knows he’s going to listen to on repeat as soon as he can get his hands on it. Last time they called, Eddie told him he wouldn’t be back until Christmas, and Steve finds himself wondering if July is too soon to start counting down the days. School is out for the summer so he’s bored out of his mind and at a complete loose end, so his mind constantly wanders to the calendar. He tells Robin as much when she calls, and is only slightly perplexed when she asks him insistently if he’s sure he’s got absolutely nothing on for the next couple of weeks. Yes, he’s sure he doesn’t. There’s refurbishment going on at the community centre so there isn’t even anything happening there. Robin ends the call with a cryptic ‘just making absolutely, completely, 100% sure’, before hanging up and going off to enjoy the rest of her vacation in Europe.
A few days later, just as Steve is settling down to sleep, he hears the sound of a vehicle pull up outside his house. From the amount of noise it makes, he knows it has to be something big. Before he can get the chance to check it out for himself, though, there’s a tapping on his bedroom window.
When he pulls back the curtains, he’s shocked to see Eddie standing on his lawn, pelting rocks at his window like they’re teenagers in a movie. Behind him is what can only be Corroded Coffin’s tour bus, with all its fancy custom decals and tinted glass. Eddie is grinning widely and Steve finds that it’s contagious as he opens the window and leans out.
“Eddie, what the hell are you doing here? I thought you were supposed to be in Cali!”
“I thought I’d surprise you.”
Steve laughs, unable to contain his joy at the ridiculous theatrics.
“It definitely worked. You brought your tour bus?” he asks, incredulous.
Eddie’s eyes sparkle in the summer moonlight.
“Well, it’s no Winnebago, but I figured it would do the trick.”
Steve’s heart stutters in his chest. He’s never quite been able to live down his ‘six kids and a Winnebago’ comment, but he knows that Eddie knows exactly what it means to him. And, in turn, Steve thinks he knows exactly what Eddie is trying to say with such a grand gesture.
“What do you say, big boy? Still up for that road trip?”
Surely the question has to be rhetorical, because they both know there’s only one answer.
