A concept I had in mind for the Yuyan archers in the Legend of Korra era with more modern uniforms and weapons.
( check at Vachir for comparison)
Few points:
The idea of a short jacket with a darker thick border and a red piece on the left side of the neck, the color is less bright and it's asymetrical with shorter leaves ( instead of tugging longer ones in the arm protections).
The blouse is now a thin turtleneck top, following every movement.
Exit the "skirt" parts of the bottom, which is the same pants but with pockets - who doesn't need pockets?-
A tactical tight pouch when pockets aren't enough.
The arm protections are now on both arms.
Belt with the usual "triangle" symbol.
You also have it on the head piece but not the knot and the tissue anymore, it wasn't practical.
The boots are now hight instead of short ones with bandages. It also have the separated thumb toe form that we can see in the RC police uniform. The Yuyan were shown to be kinda "acrobatic" so I figured it'd help them to be more stable, comfortable and agile.
Big ass mechanical bow, more powerful than the classic one and with features to help targetting.
The arrows are basically the same I guess?
The quiver can be wear on the back and on the side of the leg ( hold by the belt) depending on the current needs.
EDIT: winter version added for special occasions.
EDIT 2: FInally added the tatoo. However I wonder if it's still a tatoo in LOK era and not a make up item, like a temporary one. Also if it's a real tatoo I hc them having to shave their eyebrow the first time they receive it.
Also for those who want a mount, rhinos are only for parades, we have motos now. Like the ones of Bongo and his barbarians.
Tumblr media
To sum up, they were the secret weapon of the Fire Nation back in Ozai's times, bow I see more them like an elite troop, acting as bodyguards for important members of the political sphere and for special operations. They use their historical uniforms and mounts for shows and parades, being a well known attraction for tourists ( a bit like the Queen's (lol calling them the King's guards is hard) guards for example, but remaining trained soldiers.

Because I don't like cartoon logic in live action shows: I would have made Zuko wounded by the arrow instead of knocked out. Have Aang carry him off with arrows sticking out of his arms and legs.
Actually, even meaner, shoot Zuko in both arms, Aang in both legs. Zuko then has to carry Aang and collapses when they reach a hiding spot. Aang treats Zuko's wounds then escapes with the help of air bending.

(I decided to make a separate post for this)
I’ve seen some negative comments about Jujinta’s design on Reddit after being reposted by a user, so here is the process I went through with his look.
The Dawn of Yanchen, Chapter: Exposure:
“𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘰𝘸. 𝘑𝘶𝘫𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥, 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘱 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘪𝘧 𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘵.

Jujinta was an Fire Nation marksman who took on a self-imposed exile after killing his brother. He had also taken an oath not to use a bow and arrow as it’s stated in the later quote of the book.
It implies that he could have belonged to The Yuyan Archers or part of the family of Uzuku Yuyan. Tho we don’t know if they existed in Yangchen’s Era but it was a great detail to read!
If we took a look at Yuyan Archers in Atla, they are dark-skinned and wear dark tones of red.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yuyan Archers are heavily inspired by Korean history as their bow “Gak-gung" (In Korean 角弓, and English ”horn bow“). If you want to learn more about this sport, here is an interesting Page that explains more about its history!
Tumblr media
For the outfit, here are some references that I used for Jujinta’s clothes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, yes. Fire nation’s citizens are a combination of light and dark-skinned folk. A huge place with lots of different islands, therefore different groups of people. Several characters in Atla and Lok are an example of it. (Sidao, the Sun Warrior, P'li, Yuyan Archers, Combustion man among others.)
So I hope this small behind scenes of my Character design has been entertaining! I love every single character of The Dawn of Yangchen and The Kyoshi Novels. I try to portray their personalities and background in one picture as best as I can. They deserve it after all!
To my friends on Reddit: It’s art, enjoy :)
And don’t forget to read DoY!! It’s an incredible book!!
(If y'all like this, I can make more with the rest of the Team Avatar (DoY and RokSok)

you know i don't think it's Explicit that zuko was taught swordplay bc he wasn't as strong a bender as azula but also it makes a lot of sense given the whole firebending supremacy thing so WHY the goddamn FUCK was natla azula an archer

TF2 x ATLA AU :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lore, close ups, and doodles underneath !
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scout, Pauling, and Ludwig are the main three- scout, who’s an (admittedly shitty) airbender but not the avatar, who ran away after his father left. Once spotted by fire nation soldiers, he is presumed to be the avatar- and scout basks in the glory of his false identity. Pauling- a studious, too serious for her own good, non-bender, who’s Medic’s student. She’s of the southern water tribe, treating medic like her paternal figure after the disappearance of her aunt. Medic is (unbeknownst to pauling and scout) a blood bender who was exiled for his practices. He doesn’t seem to care for anyone or anything, also being very jovial and cheery.
All Pauling and Scout know is that Ludwig was exiled from the northern water tribe then fled to the south for an undisclosed reason. Pauling never bothered to pry and the Scout was too intimidated to. Here the avatar cycle has indeed been broken. It’s up to a group of nine ragtag men and one mousy girl to defeat Gray Mann.
Tumblr media
And the main three villains are soldier, demo, and sniper who're all fire nation folk. Sort of the team rocket; never truly competent enough to cause real damage, that or their hearts truly aren’t in it.
Soldier's a fire bender who specializes in jet propulsion and was kicked out of the army. He thinks if he steals back the avatar, they'll let him back in. A weapon since childhood, once a bully, always a bully, or so he’s heard.Character arc being the realization the fire nation army isn't worth fighting for. Surprisingly, he is very good with spirits, opposite to his best friend, Tavish, who despises them.
Demo’s just trying to impress his mum and be a good friend to the Soldier. People pleasing tendencies, that's his character arc. He's supposedly a non bender who's mighty good with swords; but underneath his inconspicuous-ish eye patch holds a combustion bending tattoo. Only Jane knows this. Well-versed in calligraphy.
Sniper is a 26 year old yuyan archer who was discharged for failing a mission while he was young. He joined the other two with the same goal as the Soldier. His yuyan archer tattoo still remains. He's a non bender with excellent aim, who grew up on the rural outskirts of the fire nation. His character arc is something about not adhering to expectations and learning who he's fighting for; a combination of the demoman and the soldier’s lessons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spy's a crusty airbender constantly sporting a mask to hide his tattoos, and knife. Nobody has a clue where he's from and he takes orders from whoever pays him best. His airbending tricks are so subtle, the public believes him to be a crafty nonbender. Usually said tricks are only invisibility and voice alteration. While not assassinating political figures he traverses the spirit world looking for his wife, a fellow air nomad, avoiding physical aging in brief sprints of time. He returns on a well paid mission to kill the “avatar,” which was presumably the scout. Little does he know, that weird whiteboy is just some lame airbender. Who’s also his son. His bad.
Engineers the metalbender; an art perfected by his ancestors and passed down in whispers to him. I haven't developed him much. He teaches the Scout what he knows while obscuring information on how he got that metal arm. Him and the Pyro have a shared love of blacksmithing. From an explosion, he thinks..
Pyro's a spirit probably. Nobody knows what he is. Where he’s from? Pyro. What’s his gender? Pyro. Guy who sets things on fire. Presumably human judging by his questionable use of what looks to be fire bending. And also the Spy's companion! They met in the spirit world. He and the Soldier form a close bond quite quickly thanks to their good graces with spirits (to Tavish’s immense dismay).
Heavy's an earth bender who continues to win in underground fights. Residing in ba sing se with his three sisters and elderly mother, scout pauling and medic meet him in an earth bender championship. Despite what his appearance suggests, his patience is unmatched, which is his greatest strength. He has near -perfect seismic sense. He and the Medic get on quite well, and after the fire lord has been struck down, form a duo in the ring, earning even more won championships.

The Warriors of Kyoshi
Aang brings Katara and Sokka to Kyoshi Island to ride the giant koi fish, but after a close encounter with the unagi, the team is captured by a group of female warriors. Aang reveals he is a reincarnation of Kyoshi Island's founder, Avatar Kyoshi, though the villagers do not believe him and plan to throw the three friends to the unagi. After Aang frees himself and demonstrates his airbending, the villagers celebrate the arrival of the Avatar. Word of his presence eventually reaches Zuko, who sets sail to Kyoshi Island immediately. Sokka befriends the Kyoshi Warrior leader, Suki, who teaches him the warrior skills of Kyoshi. She manages to change his sexist attitude in the process while also developing a crush on him. However, Zuko arrives and attacks the village, forcing Team Avatar to leave the village and draw Zuko away. As they depart, Aang manages to ride and control the unagi, using the creature's water spray to douse the flames raging through the village, saving it from total ruin.
The Blue Spirit
Zhao is promoted to admiral and enlists the help of a group of professional archers called the Yuyan Archers. Meanwhile, Sokka and Katara become sick due to being exposed to a storm previously, so Aang goes to an herbalist to find a cure. After finding it, Aang is caught by the Yuyan Archers and imprisoned by Zhao. A warrior with a blue mask rescues him, and they escape together. Aang discovers the warrior is none other than Zuko and wonders if the two of them could be friends. Zuko attacks, but Aang escapes and cures his friends.

People wondering why Azula has a bow when my mind immediately went "because fire arrows."
That kind of looks like what we see in both trailers when the voice over talks about the fire nation destroying the world.
But then I thought...maybe Azula is the one who shoots Zuko down in "The Blue Spirit" instead of the Yuyan Archers. It would make sense for the show to consolidate characters and they did say they were giving Azula an expanded role to pave the way for her becoming a greater antagonist later. This could be a way for the show to introduce her as an antagonist to both Zuko and the gaang while we see another side of Zuko.
It also adds some interesting dimension to her antagonism with Zuko. Like, if she was there at Pohaui stronghold then maybe she recognizes that the person in the blue spirit mask is her brother?
Tumblr media
I'm calling this right now, actually.
It would also explain why Azula later thinks Zuko knows about Aang not really being dead if she suspected him of being a traitor early on. Also the emotional impact of Zuko wearing that mask that represents their mother and Azula just like, mercilessly shooting him down because she's trying to banish any vestige of that connection to her own weakness.

----------------------------- Samsara is a Yuyan archer from Korra's era, she's 14 in book 1 and her story happens right after the end of book 4. She's the descendant of Vachir, one of the Rough Rhinos of ATLA, a former Yuyan archer. She wears a modernised uniform I designed, due to the lack of informations about this Fire Nation unity even in the Roleplay game.
And yes, she's a fire bender, hiding it most of the time to join the archers. ----------------------------- Pose based on www.mastersofanatomy.com/weapo…

atla live action thoughts: episode 6
SPOILERS AHEAD
tw: opinions
things i liked:
love the moment where roku tells aang friends can be a liability and you can see in his face that he's thinking of sozin
koh lore is interesting. funnily enough i've also written koh being the son of the mother of faces in a fic before so i see netflix has been hitting up ao3
(for legal reasons, that was a joke)
i like zhao forcing zuko to turn aang over more than him capturing aang with the yuyan archers himself like in the original. this 100% feels like something animated zhao would do and it really drives home how much of a disadvantage zuko's at. this is the dynamic i wanted to see between the two of them
lmao @ zhao wanting to get every detail of his capture of the avatar in writing, and aang blowing air at him to send him falling over himself. they pulled that right from the original and it's great
BLUE SPIRIT TIME BABY
this fight (well the parts of it that i can see) is SO GOOD. pretty sure it's almost a shot for shot remake of the original and zuko and aang are working together seamlessly
oh i fucking LOVE that zuko and aang are trapped together and get to talk. zuko smiling despite himself... aang trying so earnestly to get through to him... the way zuko actually seems to be listening to him before he hears the word compassion... chef's kiss this was an INSPIRED change
"do you think we could've been friends too?"
the transitions from younger, happier zuko to older, traumatized zuko are fucking painful. the one where he looks into the mirror to see his unscarred, smiling self for just a moment before it flashes to his present reality... next time just shoot me netflix
"he will recover" "but he will never heal"
young zuko lying in bed sobbing as he's banished by his own father what if i killed myself
HIS CREW BEING THE 41st DIVISION HE LOST EVERYTHING TO PROTECT whichever writer suggested that needs a raise posthaste
"our prince" who is cutting all of these fucking onions
things i disliked/am conflicted about:
this is where the show suffers as an adaptation, because if the animation didn't exist, the agni kai would've been fine. zuko trying to dodge, having the chance to hurt ozai yet actively choosing not to out of love, being beaten up, pinned down and brutally burned as he whimpers in fear - all of that works on its own. it conveys zuko's compassion and ozai's brutality just fine, but not to the level that the cartoon does. the scene is brutal in both versions but animated zuko not even trying to fight, sobbing and begging on his knees, and being maimed anyway just hits harder than the netflix version
not sure if i saw it right but it seemed as though there were tears in ozai and azula's eyes??? i can maybe see it for this version of azula but in no world would ozai be crying over burning zuko. it feels like they're trying to make this version of ozai more complex but he was FINE as a classic villain
that being said, i do like ozai holding zuko's hand to his heart as he burns him. the symbolism of zuko trying to reach for his father's love while ozai permanently brands his cruelty on his son... ate
i don't even like roku in the animation all that much but his presence has been weirdly reduced in the show, even though he's the avatar aang is closest to. aang having to take on the burden of redeeming roku's failure is a significant part of their dynamic and i want more of that
hollywood i'm begging you to shoot night scenes that people can see because parts of the blue spirit and aang fight sequence were so dark i looked like the squinting lady meme
i really wish we'd still gotten the moment in the storm where zuko saved the helmsman. i know they kinda replaced it with the crew realizing they were only alive because of zuko's sacrifice, but they could've done both to show how much zuko still cares, even if he can't show it
how are we 3/4th of the way into the season and aang is STILL ONLY BENDING AIR
overall rating: 9/10. definitely the best of the series so far and i love how they expanded on zuko's backstory and his relationship to aang

Quick list of things I particularly loved from NATLA Episode 3 - Omashu before my in-depth overview
The whole rebellion inside the Fire Nation - love seeing EVERYONE fighting back
"I think that's what they said - I never listened." ^_^
"What makes you think we're outsiders?"
"We ARE Fire Nation, even out here"
"Irrigation, am I right?" :D
Aang darting through a crowd messing up everyone's day - just straight from the animated!
And the first tease of the cabbage merchant!!!
Our Gaang wasting NO time after the explosion to run in and help
Bloodthirsty Teo ready to recruit Aang to carpet bombing the Fire Nation - yet another example of children's morals and sense of self being warped by this war
How proud Teo is of his father!!
Sokka being able to show his interest in tinkering and engineering!!!
And did I spy some ECLIPSE glasses????
Aang's "no, I'm not going to just leave people in trouble, I'm going to stay and help them any way I can" moment
"He's done the impossible" in the most mocking voice imaginable! XD Adore that Azula isn't afraid to mock her father
And Mai and Tylee cameos!!!!
And the Yuyan archers! So many hints to the future here
Katara practicing her waterbending forms even in the background - really showing that she's taking every opportunity to hone her skills - she's not just perfect immediately
JEEEEETTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!
Honestly first thought cart-boy might have been Haru, but once he caught the Mechanist meeting with the spy, my Jet senses started tingling
Jet's combat - perfect! Katara's skills - growing!!
LOVE how there's such a marked upgrade in Katara's control from her single ball of water and big splash of last episode to her controlled twin water ball attacks
Jet's bird-whistle signal
I started giggling maniacally, knowing what was coming!!
And that DAMN piece of straw XD
Sokka saying 'No, my role is to be a warrior and protect the village' with the most heartbreaking look on his face as he sees the skills he truly loves being devalued (or the perception that their devalued) and then Sai reassuring him and his frown turning into a hopeful look on the verge of a smile. Seriously, my heart, guys
Chills every time Smellerbee throws up her hand and shouts "Freedom Fighters!" and the whole camp cheers - really you see how they're a family, a community, healing together the best way they know how
Honestly, everything with Jet is great - him actually giving GOOD advice to Katara, making him a real person rather than someone who only cares about himself - I believe this Jet actually cares about Katara the person, not just Katara the weapon
Also the fact that there's only the small hand-brush as a romantic gesture, the rest of Katara and Jet's interactions keep strictly platonic - nowhere near as charged as all Sokka's interactions with Suki and Yue
Katara's mom smiling in the sunrise D;
Zuko's annoyance at Iroh loving the city XD
And Lotus tile reference!!
Sokka's paper bird!!!
And oooohhh here comes the fighting!
Such a great choice to pit the Mechanist (Sokka) against Jet (Katara) where they're BOTH bad! This isn't a one sibling is right scenario - both their new allies are doing bad stuff! Very juicy and great plot thread/theme weaving
"To prove you're a jerk!" "Oh yeah, well I don't need proof of that!!"
Cabbage merchant tease #2!!
SSCCAARRRFF ZUUUTTAARRRAAAAAAAAAAA
"This guy - again?" *rolly eyes*
Sokka's first mad plan!! Riding the crates to the palace!!
The Zuko/Aang fight - beautiful, stunning, stylized, classic
Zuko being beaten by a woman furious that he's hitting a child
"YOU READ MY DIARY!!!!!!!!" sorry, "YOU HAVE MY NOTEBOOK!!"
MY CABBAGEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!
Water HAWHIP!!!!
Iroh's first firebending in the show is him using it to draw attention to him so Zuko can escape :( not to harm anyone, but to protect
Aang's little "Uh oh o.o"
This was the first episode where it ended and I thought "I HAVE to watch the next one RIGHT NOW"
Damn you cliffhangers
[Masterlist of my NATLA thoughts]

ATLA Live Action Stream of Consciousness (Episode 6, Part 2).
THE AANG/ZUKO HEIGHT DIFFERENCE!
This section is basically a copy of the original show which is why I have no problems with it lmao.
Zhao’s poor scribe is just trying to do his job.
Tell me why Zuko is better at sword fighting than all of these adults.
TEAMWORK!! FORESHADOWING!!
I want to marry a Yuyan archer part 2.
Ooh a longer Aang/Zuko convo? It’s all generic and I don’t care I like it anyway.
Aang being cute and funny is everything I need. He needs to do more of it.
Of course Zuko has a favorite kind of pen.
Their friendship is everything to me.
“Of course it’s what everyone expects of me” ME ON THE FLOOR! (I like that we know it’s not what Zuko really wants-what he wants is way more complicated. Same goes for Azula but she’s not here and I doubt they’ll give her something like this).
Oh Aang Zuko isn’t ready to be better yet.
Zuko your trauma is showing.
Agni Kai flashback.
THEY GAVE BABY AZULA BANGS?!?! Amazing decision.
Ozai are you actually mad rn? (In the OG it seemed like he was asserting his power rather than really caring).
Ooh Iroh’s trying to intervene that’s an interesting take.
I knew Zuko was going to fight and unlike the rest of the fandom I don’t have strong feelings about it. It’s clear he only fights back because he thinks that’s what Ozai wants.
Azula definitely looks concerned/in shock in these shots imo. I do like that change from the original show since they’re showing her humanity.
Nice callback on “compassion is a sign of weakness.”
Azula’s expression during the Agni Kai with Zuko and Ozai is the same one she had on when Ozai burned the spy in episode 3. I think it’s dissociation mostly, not wanting to acknowledge what’s happening or having to not process it because she knows it could happen to her. (Or a trauma response)
How did Iroh get his hair bun back?
Zuko does care too much Iroh’s right.
Ozai playing fake nice in this scene is chilling, and a welcome update.
“Sometimes the weak can become stronger. Sometimes you have to give them a chance.” Zuko we know you’re talking about yourself (still a great line though)
URSA MENTION?! I need more fire family flashbacks if they get book 2.
Does Ozai think this is good parenting?
I knew the 41st was Zuko’s crew already but I love that change just like everyone else.
Zuko saying “I’m fine” is peak teenager core.
Zuko and Iroh are giving parent child here.
This is a great scene with the crew it’s so sweet.
This episode has Zuko crying too much it’s not good for me.
I like the theme of friendship in this little monologue. If they’d build up the gaang’s friendship more it would mean more to me.
Wait what happened to Gyatso? I don’t get it.
The parallel father figure narrations in episodes 5 and 6 are good.
Zuko’s mirror bit ofc reminded me of Azula’s mirror in book 3.
THAT WAS A GOOD LAST LINE!

I should make a collection on AO3 entitled “Zuko gets adopted by increasingly implausible parental figures.” First there’s the sensible options: Iroh, Hakoda, Piandao, the crew of his season 1 ship, a “nice Earth Kingdom family”. Then the out-there ones: the Yuyan Archers, the Herbalist from “The Blue Spirit”, June the bounty hunter, Bato, Jet, pirates. Then we dive into the ridiculous: the Herbalist’s **cat** from “The Blue Spirit”, the dragons from “The Firebending Masters”, literal serial killer Hama, and, of course, himself from the future
