Neon City Lights and Rain

“Of all the nights- damnit!” Yang rounded the corner, slipping from the rain-soaked streets.

“Let’s meet at that café after your job, okay?” Blake’s request echoed in her mind.

She’s late, painfully so. Her last job with Ruby went smoothly if you asked her. It was just the aftermath that took longer to deal with than it should have. So what if they used a little more force and that lead to a lopsided and malfunctioning street light which then lead to a (in her opinion) semi-worse off traffic jam? Then she and her sister had to endure another lecture courtesy of General Ironwood and Winter about collateral property damages. And to add insult to injury, the damages were covered by part of their payment for the job they took! 

The harsh evening city lights, reflected off the increasing downpour, glared at her in all directions as she finally saw the café down just two more blocks. Good- she didn’t want to keep Blake waiting any longer for their meetup. Yang looked down at her drenched form. No umbrella and little spending lien left for the night, she took off sprinting across the street when the pedestrian crossing signal finally flashed. She hoped she could salvage the remnants of her evening with Blake. And if by chance, Blake had already heard about her and Ruby’s incident (probably from Miss Ice “Snitch” Queen herself), she would play it cool. Yeah.

She's late. Blake mused, her mind calm despite Yang's delay. A message from Weiss had enlightened her about the extent of the chaos caused by the sisters during their recent job.

Ruby's in for an earful from Weiss.

No matter. This was precisely why Blake had taken to carrying a book. It wasn't that she assumed Yang would always be tardy—after all, back in their Beacon days, Yang had surprised her with her punctuality.

Completing the third paragraph of the page, Blake shifted her gaze to the intensifying rain. Droplets meandered down the windowpane beside her, accentuating the wet streets awash with the hustle and bustle of pedestrians. Amidst the crowd, Yang was impossible to spot, despite her golden obvious mane anyone could pick out.

Abruptly, a loud thud grabbed her attention, her sensitive ears detecting the collision of wood against wood, followed by unintelligible exclamations and the hurried sloshing of wet footwear. She turned her head towards the entrance, just in time to catch exhausted panting and the sound of that unmistakable voice. "I'm here, Blake."

Conceptualized during early middle part of Volume 9 before we’ve seen Ruby’s outburst, if I remember correctly. Then after THAT episode and scene (from episode 9), I thought of the dialogue.

Volume 5, emotional reunion hug with Yang Volume 6, comforting hug with Blake Volume 8, (many) comforting hugs with Penny … So where’s that one-on-one hug with Weiss, hm?!

Encounter in the Sands

 I want to know what happened during the  confrontation between Summer (+Raven) and Salem. Ruby guessed she was grimmified into a hound beast.

Wonder where Raven took them? Tai & Yang, obviously not they were in the house. Qrow in Volume 7 said it was a ‘Summer secret’ and that he ‘was just as in the dark’ as Ozpin and Tai, so it couldn’t have been him either. Unless she teleported them to Qrow at first then split off secretly, or Qrow lied to Ruby, but I doubt it. Vernal, very doubtful given age (maybe?) and we don’t know how long she’s known Raven and was part of the clan. So there’s someone else and new, an angle that hasn’t been hinted at yet, or there’s more to Raven’s semblance than we know in canon.

…where I told you to run so- wait wrong series lmao.

As for the latest episode, all I’ll say imo is that it was so underwhelming, and didn’t live up to the hype around it by CRWBY (this time).

Slight rant coming:

It was too short and boring. I liked the Summer reveal and the Blacksmith’s full design. But it didn’t seem like it gave the previous episode weight, and we all know that the implications should’ve had a larger impact on the others. But I guess the payoff will come down in the finale. Instead, of course, they made it about Jaune and his mistake of not letting the Paper Pleasers just be for his own delusions of heroism. I don’t know, it’s weird that WBY saw their leader, sister, and best friend essentially commit suicide, and they comfort Jaune again. No strong visual reaction from Weiss or Blake- it’s like they both skipped all the way to the acceptance stage of grief. Everything Weiss said to comfort Jaune both in this episode and to her teammates last episode, she should’ve said to Ruby.

I’m really getting frustrated with Jaune this volume to be honest. I thought the point of him falling off the bridge and being in the volume was to reveal that he mercy killed Penny, but now that point, however revealed, seems moot. I was excited about this volume focusing on RWBY and Ruby’s development specifically, as people from CRWBY have said. But in this volume, he’s had 4 episodes now about him and his grief, and Weiss, whose home was outright destroyed, had like one minute to grieve. Let’s not forget that Ruby’s breakdown was almost entirely overshadowed by Jaune’s (frankly) immature outburst too.

Pfft, “It’s all about you [about Ruby]!” Really? Who had a bully arc in the first season that took away depth and development from one of the four main titular girls? Who already had a majority of a volume (4) about grieving their teammate? Who had to have growth and took away important moments that the main girls should’ve had, while costing others to lose their agency and left underdeveloped?

Ruby’s Despair Arc

The voice acting performances from Miles and Lindsay down to the last line were so chilling and visceral.

Alright let’s talk about this. I know that the breakdown from the episode (may just be the beginning of it too) has been analyzed a lot. So my thoughts: in short, it was really well done and raw.

Ruby has the burden of the world on her shoulders, and is now living the worst moment of her life currently. She, according to Lindsay, doesn’t know how to healthily process her losses and trauma and turmoils. “[Ep4] Her subconscious is telling her, “here are all the ways you feel you failed not only as a person but as a team leader’ ”

The moment where she finally begins to vent is when Weiss calls her attention to lead again (Ruby’s interpretation of “Right, Ruby?”) and to agree with the Blake and Yang’s words towards Jaune after the flood. Throughout the volume, Ruby’s been placed in situations where she has to lead like, for example, literally carrying her team for almost three episodes. There was no time to slow down and let her feelings catch up. Her team has tried to reach out, but they’re either interrupted (which was very frustratingly noticeable in this episode) or Ruby shrugs them off and refuses to open up. Unfortunately the negative emotions coming from both Jaune and Ruby reacted with each other; Ruby lashed out towards her teammates and also clearly projected her insecurities and repressed emotions.

To Weiss, “Gotta find someone who isn’t just going to screw everything up!”—> I believe this is a callback to how unaccepting Weiss was to have Ruby as a partner then leader. Ruby now genuinely feels that all she has done was screw up everything, proving Vol1;Weiss right, and now throwing it in her face. (It would have been chilling if she said something like, “You were right, Ozpin making me the leader was a mistake”)

To the Bees, “Maybe even finally getting our feelings sorted out!” —> I see this as her lashing out (in some jealousy) that the Bees worked their feeling out (and are happy together) and she has done nothing for herself, therefore can’t be fully and honestly (yet) excited about their new relationship. Also, others pointed out the parallels between Blake and Ruby and now that Blake in this volume have taken the most charge and acted like the leader, especially in the first two episodes.

To Jaune, I don’t know why the writers are having us wait so long after RWBY and Jaune’s reunion to finally have Ruby learn Penny’s true cause of death on the bridge. Jaune is coping with his losses and actions in his own way, but he’s not making progress and refuses to change his mind about the tree-he’s basically in a stalemate at the moment- he has been for however long he’s been in Ever After. To hear Ruby call out the uselessness of mourning his “make-believe friends”, is when he finally lashed out and fed into her anger, saying what he’s been holding into for years for him that finally caused her to take off alone.

I’ve seen some theories popping up in places that state Ruby might try to sacrifice herself to the tree in order for the others to leave. The lyrics from the song “Trapdoor” is another look into her mental state too. She might’ve left to pursue Neo or find a way to the tree or back to the blacksmith even or maybe just to swing Crescent Rose around.

(I can say more, but that’s the short of it)
