Tiny random Maya tip: If you unfold UVs using a tileable texture, you might want to allow UV overlap in certain places, because it will cause less distortion. Automatic unfold can do this, just Shift klick the Unfold button and untick "Prevent self border intersection"

Hey everyone, I’m not very active on tumblr right now because I’m working fulltime on my own game!
Its a mix of Action RPG and social simulation set in the Austrian Alps! I am very excited about it and will post updates here sometimes, but of course I’ll also keep posting other stuff as well.  If you are interested you can follow the game more closely on our twitter account

3D icecream rendered with Arnold. 10 years back when I got into 3d, rendering in Maya always felt like a bit of a drag, it just never felt very intuitive to me. Nowadays with Arnold, just throw in a simple lightsetup and some material nodes, and you get something simple but cool looking basically out of the box! A pity though that batch rendering support does not come with Maya anymore...

Poor fox, he has seen some things... I‘m slowly trying to make some time to get used to procreate. I haven’t been drawing a lot the past year, and it’s very noticeable to me that I’m out of shape. Have to try hard not to get too frustrated 😅 #fox #procreate #ipad #frustration https://www.instagram.com/p/B96bpMFlyEe/?igshid=rkukmlpcc6ef

I wish I could share a secret tip that would reveal all the blender secrets, but I fear the only way is powering through your inital frustration and the feeling of reverting back to a complete 3D beginner... At least that's what I did ;D
Something I can recommend when switching to blender from other 3D software is setting the navigation and keymaps to "Industry compatible". I usually avoid using non-standard keybinds for new software, but given that blenders navigation is soooo different from basically all other 3D software (and that includes engines like unity or software like substance) I feel it helps overcome some initial confusion and frustration. There is an offical list of industry keymaps here A disadvantage of this is that you can't directly apply a lot of tips and shortcuts you find online in forums etc because they refer to the classic blender layout... but I still think it's worth it when coming from other software packages.
I might post some short 'blender for maya user' tips in the future because blender can definitely do some things better than Maya.... it just feel as if I haven't discorvered most of these things yet either ;)

Have some famous furniture! These three chairs are modern design classics from the 20th century. I got a little creative with the color variations, but the shapes are all true to the originals, if maybe a bit simplified to fit the lowpoly style.
I used this simple CG challenge to teach myself modelling in Blender, which is a bit of a challenge in itself, after nearly 10 years with Maya ;)

Swan for the 7th day of christmas. This is acutally the last of the birds!
(And in case anyone was wondering, yes, I made each bird out of the model of another one, and yes, it did save time, but no, not all that much time unfortunately ;)

4 calling birds for 3dcember
Apparently the original lyrics used to be “colly brids”, referring to the color of coal, so basically blackbirds!
texturing in all black is always an interesting challenge. you have to keep the overall impression of “black”, yet actually use a lot of grey/dark blues etc. to get some visible lighting, shapes, and details like feathers

Bawk!
It’s the third gift of Christmas, a French Hen! (which I learned is not really a specific breed or anything, so I just loosely based the texturing on a Brahma chicken)
