Sergio Benvenuto in his book "Lo psichiatra e il sesso" (The Psychiatrist and Sex) writes:

«L'idea della malattia come disfunzione presuppone insomma tutta un'antropologia metafisica, teleologica, che dà per implicito il fatto che l'essere umano vada pensato come una macchina volta a uno scopo. Si è disordinati nella misura in cui non si funziona più secondo una norma tacita, implicita, di "vita normale".»

[The idea of illness as a dysfunction presupposes a whole metaphysical, teleological anthropology, which implicitly takes the fact that the human being must be thought of as a machine aimed at a purpose. We are disordered to the extent that we no longer function according to a tacit, implicit norm of "normal life".]

Normal life is that which is functional to commodity society, and it is no coincidence that Benvenuto points out how organicist psychiatry arrived in the USA in the period of Reaganism and in the United Kingdom in the period of Thatcherism.

Psychiatry therefore becomes what R.D. Laing feared it might become: «But psychiatry can so easily be a technique of brainwashing, of inducing behaviour that is adjusted, by (preferably) non-injurious torture.»
