lilia vanrouge is the vice president of the diasomnia house

so when you first saw him, you respected him quite a bit, though his features did make him seem a little out of place as compared to malleus, silver and sebek

you quickly learned that those exact features made him incredibly popular

maybe overly so, because every time you saw him, you could see him flirting with an entirely different person

the first time you actually spoke to him, he was looking for his misplaced pencil case, still wearing the overly large science coat with the large goggles resting atop his head

"Excuse me dear, I seem to have misplaced my pencil case and I have no idea where it could be. Would you be a dear and join me in my search?"

you simply raised an eyebrow, and shook your head no

he pursued his lips and made a pouting face, but you just stared blankly at him

relenting, he sighed and turned around to find someone else to help him with his search

you could faintly hear a "... Am I not cute enough today?"

fortunately (or not), you stumbled across a pencil case at the edge of the staircase, with diasomnia, light music club, and bat keychains attached to the one zipper

hmm, he must have dropped it while switching classrooms

so you bring it to the diasomnia house room, where you were greeted by silver

you entrusted the pencil case to silver, but not without him asking for your name and class so Lilia could say thank you properly

of course, you tried to leave, really not wanting to get involved in any sense with the playboy and his fanbase

but silver being the dear that he is insisted on having your name

the next day, as you were walking to your classroom, Lilia appeared seemingly out of nowhere

he thanks you, but starts rambling off "Oh I knew I was cute enough yesterday! How sweet of you to help little old me, khee hee!"

ಠಿ⁠_⁠ಠ ...sure, lilia-senpai

you try to brush off his gratitude with a quick "you're welcome" and "it wasn't a bother really"

but then he's spouting "It must be fate that you were the one to help me! Darling, won't you let me return the favour? Perhaps, with a date?" he says while batting his eyelashes cutely

??? no??? you weren't into the cute type of guys, you liked more masculine, muscular men ahem leona senpai

so you rejected him honestly, but rather than be upset, his eyes are just twinkling mischievously (uh oh)

after that event, you just started encountering him randomly in your school life

popping up randomly to ask you out because he looked particularly cute that day

asking you to come over to the light music club after school

you continued to reject him, thinking he was just playing around like with all the other girls

but then one day, he came up to you with a request

"Dear, would you happen to be good at baking?"

see, silver's birthday is coming up, and apparently it's all the rage nowadays (so he says) to have a homemade cake rather than a store-bought one and "of course, it's also more nutritious"

but, rather infamously, Lilia's not the best cook

see the white day incident, where he made chocolates in return for all the ones he received and almost succeeded in murdering everyone's tastebuds

so nobody really wants to work with Lilia in the kitchen, not even his devoted(?) fangirls

usually you would've rejected his request, for two reasons, one being the rumours of his cooking, and two being not wanting to become further involved with him

but he seemed so sincere about his wish for silver, and so downcast at being unable to make the perfect birthday cake that you couldn't help but agree

on the condition that he listen to your every word whilst working in the kitchen

and thank god for that condition, because you quickly learned why he was a bad cook

"But this recipe isn't nearly nutritious enough! Shall we add some lettuce? Or perhaps..."

Lilia, we're baking a cake, not a salad...

you felt so bad for whoever was his partner in home economics

but you gave him the task of whisking the eggs after having him prepare the stovetop, where you planned to melt the butter in a saucepan...

"There was one time I went abroad and brought something back for Silver..." Lilia recounted, his hand hard at work whisking the eggs.

But just as you were getting lost in his storytelling, disaster struck. The stovetop suddenly caught on fire, flames dancing dangerously high. Panic welled up within you, and before you could react, Lilia acted swiftly.

"Careful!" he exclaimed with urgency. With the grace of a gallant knight, he pulled you close, his body a protective shield against the fire. His surprisingly serious face caught you off guard, the fiery glow reflected in the depths of his crimson eyes. His arms were a fortress, secure and tight around you.

Thump. Thump.

In a matter of moments, Lilia turned off the gas and moved the saucepan away from the stovetop, as if he were used to dealing with emergencies in the kitchen.

"Are you alright, dearest?" he asked, genuine concern in his eyes.

You took a moment to collect yourself, your heart still racing. "Oh, uhmm, yes, I'm fine... Wait, did you turn the stove all the way up?"

Lilia looked a bit confused as he admitted, "Yes? I wanted to melt the butter faster."

You couldn't help but shake your head in exasperation. "Lilia!!!" you exclaimed, incredulous at his impulsive cooking decisions.

He chuckled, seemingly unfazed by the near-disaster. "Well, it did the job, didn't it?"

thankfully, you manage to finish the cake without either of you getting hurt

it's not the best looking cake, but it definitely has a homemade feel to it, only enhanced by the chopsticks used to support it

you also get invited to silver's birthday party! lilia keeps trying to take pictures with you and ask you out

only this time, you can't help but feel more affected by his attempts than you were before

maybe you've taken a liking to the playboy afterall ;)

"Goodness, isn't it about time you give me a chance, darling?" Lilia playfully pouts, placing his hands on his hips in a mock display of irritation.

He sighs, before a rueful smile graces his lips. "Well, I suppose it's alright for now. I'm a very persistent man, you see," he says, his unwavering gaze fixed on yours.

"Ohoho~!" You laugh mockingly, sweet. Prideful and arrogant as you stand beside the reporter. "I'm glad to have met you, Mr. Reporter.. Maybe will see each other soon!" You chirped, soft and gentle as you wave him off, heading into the limousine.

I swear there's a fic of like Wayne!Reader out there that's shipped with Clark! I swear!

Also! I think it would be fun that the reader was the "comedic-villaness" troupe since the show is so "shoujo-esk".

I would see Wayne!Reader straight up going to Metropolis to spite Bruce or to "understand" this so called "superman"

Then meeting Clark and just dragging him to expensive places and Clark showing her the simple city life.

IRL Shoujo | SFW

Summary: You go to the store to get your new shoujo manga only to meet someone new.

a/n: here because @keedas made a post and @merotwst tagged me in it and I think Chifuyu is cute.

Today was the day, the new volume for your favorite manga came out. You were finally going to be caught up. Online there were spoilers everywhere, and you had tried so hard to avoid them. You made your way to the manga section. The bookstore wasn’t super crowded, but the aisle did have a few other people in it.

You were scanning the covers of the books laid out on display. The store would always put the new volumes out on a few tables, that way you weren’t having an issue finding them on the shelves. You scanned and scanned, looking for the blue-green haired boy with his pulled down face mask, the girl playing with his glasses. That’s when you saw it- Tonari no Stella. You reached your hand out to grab it eagerly, surprised to find your hand not grabbing a book but someone else’s who was also reaching for the manga.

Your eyes trailed up the arm to the set of eyes staring at you. His tousled blonde hair with an undercut, his teal colored eyes almost glimmering as he smiled with his mouth open at you. You quickly took your hand off of his, embarrassed. “I’m sorry, I’ll get the one under it. You take that one,” you said nervously. He laughed awkwardly as he picked up the book and handed it out to you. “No, you take it,” he smiled with rose-colored cheeks. His smile was almost too precious to bear.

“Thank you,” you said quietly as you took it from his hand. He picked up the book that was under it in the stack and stood there for a moment. “Soo, you like Tonari no Stella, too?” he said, tapping his finger on the manga cover. “Uh, yeah I do. You… like it?” you asked confused. It was a typical shoujo manga, not really one you would expect a guy to pick up from the store. Maybe he was picking it up for someone- a sister? A girlfriend? “Yeahh, it’s kinda embarrassing. But shoujo… is my favorite,” he nervously chuckled.

Your eyes lit up though. Finally, someone you could talk to about shoujo manga. “Really?!” you said excitedly. You paused for a second, trying to make yourself stop and calm down before you scare him away. He was cute and reads the same manga as you. You could be living your own shoujo manga fantasy right now if you played your cards right. “Yeah, I’m kind of a sucker for this kind of stuff,” he said with a beaming grin, his cheeks still dusted with a rose hue. “Do you.. want to go to the cafe after we checkout? We could talk about manga more,” he asked awkwardly, pointing in the direction of the bookstore’s in store cafe.

“I would love that,” you started to say as you both walked towards the front registers. “Oh, I almost forgot. My name is Y/N, what’s yours?” He smiled at you, he was so cute. “My name’s Chifuyu,” he said with a grin.

My black mage is too cute... (and a carboncopy, too)

If you like Spy x Family (SxF) you might find this somewhat interesting. A plus if you are a wee bit familiar with Harry Potter (HP)

If not, skip this.

Warning: Chapter 1 Spoilers for My Black Mage is too Cute under the cut. Long post, too.

Yes, the above is official. It is not fanmade. The chap above is a student actually saying "I will kill you" whilst thinking "I like you". The pink-haired girl is a classmate, shocked as SHE CAN READ HIS MIND.

So... what can I say? The boy looks suspiciously like a teen SxF Damian, and the kawaii girl looks like a teen SxF Anya. Browse the damianya tag and you will see how similar they are.

Other than being students in a magical school (hi, Hogwarts), and girl is a prefect (hi again, Hogwarts) the rest does look like an AU Damianya to me... sans the Damianya/SxF charm.

-Background-

My Black Mage is too Cute (such an unimaginative title but on par with other shoujo titling standards) launched in the August 2023 Hana to Yume issue 17/2023.

The premise is quite damianya simple: Tsundere boy, named Jade, with a rather obscure family, is hiding romantic feelings for your standard bubbly, chirpy pink haired shoujo heroine, named Aria Popwell. She is a senior (third year) to him (first year), and prefect at their School of Magic.

-Aria, the female lead-

Seriously, "Aria"? Nothing to connect with certain Anya, right?

Anyway, chapter starts with introducing Aria, the female lead. She is a prefect (whatever this means) at Hogwarts Hardy Quartz Magic Academy, "where apprentice magicians attend classes" We don't know where this Academy is (Japan, I suppose)

Aria is in her third year (no sure if this is a grade, and in fact, how many grades there are if any). She also teaches other junior students (perhaps for being a prefect, this is not confirmed) Her first words are to let us know that Kafugori are big bad wolfs that are very dangerous and how to face them. This is important to the plot (more on this later) It also sets some expectations. To me, I am led to believe that Aria is proficient and competent in whatever she does as a magician or at least, as a student in a Magic Academy.

Yes, let's have a closer look at our heroine... Yep the ^_^ shoujo trope.

Oh no no... that is not a damian jade-shoujo-filter yet. This is how WE are meant to see her. The shoujo flowers are absolutely necessary to help you understand that she is the cutest, loveliest creature on Earth. Unfortunately, we have seen the same face, same flowers and same cheerful shoujo attitude hundreds of times.

-Jade, the male lead-

Yes, this is Jade. Probably if Damian's puberty makes him... agonisingly emo teenager whilst keeping his mysterious and irresistible good looks. Or else. And Yes, Anya Aria just read his thoughts for the first time, much to her shock. Apparently until now, she did not know she can read thoughts when she touches people.

-Giving Tsundere a bad name...-

In case the first time's insults (pushy bitch) were not clear, he escalates his attitude. (Note: I appreciate that the fan translation might not be that harsh, so probably bitch is not what the original Japanese intended to sound) As he is such a cute and charming misunderstood black magician, he has to make sure his prefect is well aware that he is not only terrible at throwing unimaginative insults... he is also proud to announce he will kill her. Why? I do not know.

If you are a hopeless 13-year-old romantic teen that finds that charming, I hope you grow up out of this as soon as possible. If not, please stay away from handsome, dark, mysterious boys/men who might feel the opposite when they say "I'll kill you" Good looks are not worth it and I bet you do not have mind-reading abilities.

There is a kind of cute tsundere (Damian himself, though he is just a young boy), this is not one. There is absolutely nothing sexy, romantic, attractive or remotely interesting in a guy that pretends to hate you, says he will kill you, when they actually like you. Insulting is no praise either and I detest this trope.

Some tsundere fail to recognise or deny (again, Damian, he is too young); some are a bit embarrassed and these pass soon. Insulting and threatening is not charming.

-No, we don't need to see your fantasies (part I)-

Is he really fantasising / wishing to be kissed by her???

Yep, he is. What a creep.

It is bad enough that this guy thinks Aria is cute/hot/pretty and admits (to himself) that he likes her, when in actuality he is insulting her (a charmer). Wait, why would she kiss him? Because she is flattered she is called pushy bitch? Slow poke? Because she likes to receive death threats?

I was truly hoping Jade wanted her to kiss him to destroy that stupid crush. Only an idiot would kiss such a jerk. That would be his eye opener, at least, to realise he cannot possibly like someone so daft. Otherwise, this is ridiculous.

-She is adorably clumsy... NO. She is not.-

Moving on, good news is that the story goes to the point, way too much. Does not waste time with world-setting, simple when/where/why/how/what...

No, we meet cheerful Aria, and dark Jade like that. Other characters do not have any names, and do not really matter. Simple and lazy storytelling.

As Aria is completely shocked she reads minds, she has some little insights/flashbacks about this newly (and conveniently) found ability. No creativity, no build-up, no surprise, nothing. It just happens. Maybe this will be developed later, but it is just dumped like that.

Next panels are a few random examples of him pretending not to care about her, but actually saving this clumsy Aria girl. Too fast and again, no time to digest anything.

First time Jade stops a magic lab accident by destroying a hazardous chemical aimed to that foolish girl.

Second time, he appears to be shoving Aria off his way when in reality, he was saving her from being poisoned.

Why is she even a prefect???? How come she is not aware of the hazards around school??? Why are there hazards like those in a school no matter how magical this is???

Frankly, instead of being charmed by Jade's apparent indifference (yet saving her arse), to me this is a disservice to the girl that started the story being introduced as a prefect. We meet this shoujo heroine explaining useful tips as to how to defend yourself from big bad magical wolves. Sets a bar, you expect some proficiency even if you are not (yet) explained her merits or how she got the prefect status. By being this dumb, requiring the hero to save her, we have to lower our standards. At some point, even Jade himself wonders how she even became a prefect in the first place...

Back to the story, as now Jade inadvertently picked Aria's interest after saving her, we have Aria determined to know him better because, and I quote "Is Jade actually a really good kid who's easily misunderstood?"

So she joins him for lunch. Basically now she is trying to connect with him which only makes him complain and insult again. Now I have to agree with Jade, and I hope these attempts to connect with him help him realise his crush is as dumb as Aria.

How many times have we seen the kawaii heroine with that exactly same pose??? Eye wink + finger + cute smile + shoujo flowers. This is supposed to charm boy who (for no reason) is already charmed by this standard shoujo/magical girl trope.

The highlight of the chapter is when dark boy saves clumsy useless girl from being eaten by a Kafugori. Yep, the same beast she started the chapter talking about. Too bad, I would have appreciated getting rid of this ridiculous FL.

Why is a prefect unable to defend herself when chapter started with this lady mentoring others? I've no idea.

Why is the first year student able to save her? Other than a convenient plot device, I suppose we are led to believe that (1) he is powerful (more than her, but this is not a high bar at this point) (2) as he is a dark mage or comes from a family of dark mages, then his abilities are better. Or both.

She is again pushy, wants to understand why he saved her again (and yes, we want to know too) The pacing and rhythm are confusing, he declares he does not want her around because he is dark magician and would stain her reputation. There is a flashback when they meet, on his first day at school, and apparently, how he started his crush on her.

Again, the same shoujo-face, with shoujo-flowers, with naive shoujo-girl that smiles at sad kid declaring she does not care about his dark magic nature.

-No, we don't need to see your fantasies (part II)-

After the flashback to understand (?) why he seems to like her so much, Aria insists she will help clarify that he is actually a nice kid so that everyone knows.

Then she touches him again, and so she reads his mind.

My face mirrors Aria's. D:

Why does he have such ridiculous fantasies about her?? Marry her??? WHY??? Even poor Damian, being six years old, did not even fantasise about marrying Anya (and it is overkill, yet so appropriate for the comedic tone of SxF) With panels like this one, I wonder if this is actually a parody of shoujo fantasies, inspired by damianya doujins, or the author is really serious about this romantic trope.

To be honest, there are damianya doujins that are ridiculously charming, and follow the comedic style that SxF has and it is so refreshing. Here, those fantasies seem so serious I am inclined to believe it is just feeding shoujo readers.

-Conclusion-

Yes, there are fics and doujins that do a much better job at using the crazy and hillarous setting of a tsundere boy crushing on a mind-reader... A tsundere's worst nightmare.

However, this story has not earned that tone yet. It feeds from the premise of Hogwarts with a teen damianya... but both worlds (HP and SxF) are set and well-constructed. This one not yet.

This is a confusing setting instead, I am reading this as a (serious) romantic story (shoujo) with some supernatural/magic environment and bits of comedy. But also, perhaps it is just a comedic shoujo with a HP/damianya parody; a parody of both shoujo and HP/damianya ship; an homage to SxF damianya... Or simply a confusing combination of shoujo tropes with zero creativity (nothing we are presented tries to be original) The humour/comedic tone is just not good either.

Speaking of... and considering that Damian and Any are in primary school and are just little kids, these two have so much charm. She can read minds, yes, but she is young (it is implied she is 4 or 5 and not 6 like Damian and the rest of her little classmates) Therefore, Anya cannot identify that Damian has a crush on her, and Damian, as a little boy, does not know how to deal with a crush. The insults are not cruel, they compete with each other and they also care for each other in a naive, adorable way. But here... Aria just unlocked this mind-reading ability, so maybe it would have been more interesting to see her confused by his feelings towards her, as a first time mind-reader, making the comedy more intriguing. But no, she clearly reads him and concludes he is misunderstood and wants to help him (?)

The fantasies he has (kiss, carrying her bridal-style) are so disconnected... Even with the lame flashback, we have no reason to understand why he seems so infatuated other than Aria being pretty and choosing to ignore his dark reputation. He does not even know her (ok a boy crushing on a pretty girl does not need more) And when Jade gets to know her just a bit, it is to realise she is useless. And the crush seems to be at least the same or worse (wedding!!!) But again, I cannot help to remember how Damian started his crush: it was earned. We see him noticing Anya at the student ceremony and smugly believes she is the one crushing on him. Such a conceited brat. Then she punches that very smug face (priceless!) and you cheer for Anya. And then she tearfully apologises for punching him. Damian realises he does like her, we are shown his now celebrated damian-shoujo-filter... and we have to adore this kid. Poor Damian runs away embarrassed and disgusted (he is a child) And then their friendship develops, with comedy and nice moments that do progress their connection (keeping it in line with their age) Anya does not take advantage of Damian's feelings for her, as she is clueless about these.

But with Jade and Aria, I found no chemistry, nothing to really empathise with Jade's feelings towards her other than she smiles too much and has the standard kawaii looks. Compare that to how badass Anya is, she stood her ground, yet she was such a sweetie when she genuinely felt sorry for punching him. She is not necessarily pretty all the time, but Damian's shoujo-filter sees her as such a cute girl. I insist: the crush is earned. I would have crushed on Anya, too. With Jade? Not really.

Conversely, I also struggled to understand why would Aria care for such a jerk, no matter how pure his actual feelings are. Yeah, we need to wait for him to realise, and publicly accept he is not actually a killer and he has this heroic streak blah blah. But I am not even intrigued by this potential either. Moreover, I mentioned that Anya did not take advantage of Damian's feelings as she is not aware of these. Aria declares this mind-reading ability will make her "feel guilty" and "she will not touch anyone again"... yet she definitely touches Jade, and does use his secret to approach him. How noble.

Regarding this mind-reading ability, with Anya, we don't know much (yet) other that she was experimented on since birth (or was she born with the ability?) With Aria, we are shown a simple flashback of her Mum mentioning this ability as "high level magic only used by some bloodlines with excellent magic manipulation skills" and that some Popwells have the ability. Being so useless, Aria is not in the Sue category yet... but I hope being such a special snowflake with such great blood and the cute shoujo clumsiness does not make her one.

Probably this Story has not found its place yet, and I am definitely not the target group. But I would have never considered myself the target group for the crush of a 1st grader like Damian, and here I am. I will read the next chapters until I confirm my suspicion, but this is definitely not my cup of tea.

It is simple (very, very simple), easy to read, and does not seem to deceive anyone: Aria will eventually fall for the misunderstood tsundere with a secret heart of gold, and probably more shoujo tropes will be added to the story (boy saves girl, exes, competitors, jealousy, his family of evil magicians...)

1/5 only 1 for some decent artstyle. Zero/few backgrounds making the art super amateur and lazy (only faces and people) And lack of originality.

I noticed a bunch of new people in the Les Mis tag because of @lesmisletters, so I thought I’d share my Les Mis Blog recommendation list! If you’re looking for Les Mis blogs to follow, here are some people I recommend checking out! : D

Because Les Mis Letters is a readalong of the Brick I’m going to keep my recommendations to “currently active Les Mis blogs who focus on posting primarily canon era Brick-related things, are participating in the readalong in Some way, and post a lot of meta or academic analysis or information about historical context/political context/artistic movements relevant to Les Mis.” if I were to include every Les mis blog I enjoy this post would be 200 miles long XD.

1. @pilferingapples is basically the pillar of the Les Mis fandom on tumblr! They’ve been here for a decade and have an extremely organized blog that basically feels like an archive of the entire fandom- including everything from meta on all the different characters, information about lesser known adaptations like the anime Shoujo Cosette, and discussions about the historical context around the novel/French Romanticism/Victor Hugo’s life. I definitely recommend looking through the tags in their pinned post ajdjdjd. They are also just Very Nice.

2. @everyonewasabird is a Brick-Club member who has already done exhaustive chapter by chapter analyses of the entire book, and writes amazing intensely researched fanfiction. They are also very nice! (Just assume everyone on this list is nice)

3. @fremedon also has tons of exhaustive analysis/meta, and also writes great funny intensely researched fanfic that captures Hugo’s writing voice extremely well.

4. @bobcatmoran posts a lot of great things, but i especially love their recent posts about the Arai Manga and its translations!

5. @vapaus-ystavyys-tasaarvo has been posting tons of great historical context/footnotes lately—- and they’re also the number one source of Les-Mis-related maps!! So many high quality maps

6. @psalm22-6 posts translations of old 19th century reviews of Les Mis, as well as vintage advertisements and other weird ephemera. It’s very fun and often deeply cursed stuff.

7. @thevagueambition also does a lot of historical research (especially into things like queer history) and writes really great intensely researched Grantaire fic!

8. @persefoneshalott does a lot of great translations of Spanish adaptations of Les Mis, and has recently been posting about what things were removed in censored editions of the novel.

9. @alicedrawslesmis is a great Les Mis art blog that also dives into jokes/analysis too!

10. @shitpostingfromthebarricade posts a lot of brick-focused stuff, and does a lot of clever clever and thoughtful modernizations (ex. Retelling an entire chapter with nearly the exact wording Hugo uses, but changing the setting/historical references to modern day ones)

11. @ueinra posts illustrations from old editions of Les Mis across the world and screenshots of/ information about obscure adaptations. :3

I might add more later because I know I’m missing people, but these are just the first currently active brick-focused somewhat research-heavy blogs that came to my head! :D

I don’t have a consistent tagging system, I use whatever comes to my heart. HOWEVER, I will USUALLY try and tag posts like memes and fanart with the fandom name (and, if I reblog or a post about a fandom a lot, FULL character names! For example, I will tag “nao egokoro” instead of just “nao yttd.”) I do have a couple tags I use a lot:

Hi anon!! My deepest apologies to you because this was from Apr 23... I swear I tried but I just failed. I'm so sorry.

For this ask, I wholeheartedly agree that Nico wasn't actually ready for a relationship. He has self-issues, he has other-issues, he's just fresh out of multiple traumas (no thanks to you, Cupid). Idk. It just feels so rushed. It's like Rick was trying to appease the fandom since some might take him not giving Nico a partner as... idk discrimination or st, what's with Nico's history of internalized homophobia...

It would take quite a lot of neurons which I don't have right now and probably an essay to explain that, but I, with all my heart, believe Nico should have been allowed a gap-time (yeah i made it up from the term gap year lmao) to settle down with himself before committing to a romantic relationship.

And should the fandom decide to roast it bc "The gay character deserves a partner" then I don't care. I have seen gay crushes being snuffed out in shoujo mangas before. This is not new.

Now, that's before TSATS for you.

I honestly don't know if my inability to reply an ask in time helps with this ask lmao. Now we've had TSATS out of the closet, maybe it can provide some insight into this.

I would give it to Rick for addressing this ^^^ problem in TSATS. Though there still is a few things to say about it (the come-outs, the asking-out, etc...), I'd take it that Rick acknowledges Nico inner problems and has made an effort to address and resolve them, and further along the problem in his relationship with Will.

So basically, Rick knows he was rushing when he made Nico and Will a couple, and now he's taking the chance to fix it. At least, that's how I perceive it.

I won't refute the suspicion that TSATS is, in fact, a sudden change of plan, either. As in: I do have some doubts that all of Rick's original plan was to paint Solangelo as a perfect couple right of the bat as a happy ending for Nico - who, at that time, already has a fanbase that rivals the protagonists; however, he changed his mind sometime during TOA or post TOA and decided to publish TSATS instead. There's proof(s) I can provide to support this claim, but we'd leave it for another time. The point is that if this is true, it'd be another reason/proof for Solangelo's lack of foundation from Nico's side.

Regarding TSATS, as I suppose you can see for yourself all the debates that have been going around in the tag, Rick's efforts in addressing and resolving Nico's (and Will's?) inner problems, along with Solangelo's problems as a couple, are still on the table for evaluation. Afaik, there're thus far various opinions, some are lenient, some are acceptable, and others are not... So Ig we'll leave it for another time.

I can't decide if my phrasing was good or worse at trying to repel interest or if there are people like me out there that are starved enough that we'll nab anything even if it's a bit..... something something. Replying to this late so my brain can be too tired to strangle me before this gets made/sent.

Few disclaimers;

it is VERY ecchi if not bordering/crossing hentai status in certain chapters, while I have yet to see the anime I've heard from some of the manga-to-anime fans that they found it even MORE brazen than the manga. This is the series where very few outsiders will believe you if you say you watch it for anything OTHER than the ecchi/I-can't-believe-its-not-hentai.

If you can turn your brain off for most parts and/or take the content abstractedly you'll probably be okay with this series? Otherwise there will be a lot of "problematicness" that's gonna grate like nails on a chalkboard. The ages of the characters ALONE is a big deal breaker for many and is one of many personal gripes for me as well.

While there are some Interesting Plot Points it mostly just has fun with itself and tries to be comedic at times and could be called pretty shallow of a series overall. If you want a hefty indepth story with this setting that its placed you are probably not gonna come out of the series fully satisfied despite some of its compelling moments. If you know of some other series/story with this kind of setting that do it better PLEASE TELL ME.

I DON'T NORMALLY LIKE TO READ/WATCH THIS KIND OF MANGA/ANIME but the stars aligned in such a way that I ended up checking it out of pure curiosity and somehow fell into this bizarre though shallow rabbit hole of a series.

I've seen it referred to by three different names; Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete, Gushing over Magical Girls, and/or Looking Up to Magical Girls.

Tldr of the setting is that a huge fan of magical girls named Utena who's a very shy magical girl otaku gets tricked by an evil mascot to become a Villain instead of the magical girl of her dreams, her closeted sadism/horniness rears its head and she ends up really good at being a villain to clash heads with the magical girls. There is implications of the Mascots (at least the evil mascot) having some ulterior plans/motives but that currently has been left mysterious and up in the air as of current translation/release.

If you were to a ask me why I ended up continuing to read the series despite my huge nitpicks with it my answers would be that it had the Yuri tag on dynastyscans and I don't get to see many villain x hero stories of this angle so I'll take what I can get (I really need to dig and find some cause there must be some), the villain protag for her simplicity is kind of interesting and funny/crazy, and the other is cause some of the plot hooks/characters occasionally snap your brain into attention in a way that's weirdly compelling.

"oh haha how kinky/funny the villain has mindbroken the hero into submission like the classic hentai tropes in this chapter, surely the villain protag will delight in winning this way right?"

WRONG

GIRL DOES NOT DELIGHT.

Now excuse me as I bury myself into a hole in utter embarrassment cause I feel like I sound almost as crazy as some of the other fans who discuss the chapters of this series in a abstract literature symbolism manner.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (EP 8, 16, 24, 26)

I want to start off this post by talking about a new main character Asuka. It took me about 2 episodes to figure out she is Rei's opposite. Appearances: Blue hair and red hair. Long hair and short hair. Eye colors are different. One is soft-spoken, the other is vocal. One talks too little (from what I gather from the assigned episodes, I think Rei is supposed to be Eve or Lilith, but Asuka is like Shinji in that they are some descendants of the Evas or Angels or something that is not totally human, so this explains why she acts so cold), the other talks too much. Also the weird but true observation: one is indifferent to perverted accidents, the other is sensitive to perverted accidents; both may or may not [always] involve Shinji.

Asuka represents the tsundere stereotype, I think. I hear the "Baka, hentai!" comment from her a lot, but I can't tell if it's hormones or if she is actually attracted to Shinji. Shinji is a teenage boy, so I know he gets the classic red hand mark on his face, and it's rarely ever his fault. Those characters who are quick to anger and violence without listening to reason are often redheads, and I know it's a popular trope, but I realize as I am writing this the paradox of it all. Asuka is a young girl, and as a bit of a crazy anime watcher, I do believe violence is not always the answer, but it's wrong to assume violence is not an option. However, if every situation that triggers you is answered or resolved in violence, then it's rarely ever resolved. If Asuka even paused for a moment, she could tell Shinji probably did not even have the guts to pull harassment on any girl. To accuse him would make her the true culprit, not the victim. I know the children did not have parental figures to follow, but I guess their immaturity further proves they are really not qualified at all to be humanity's saviors. On the other hand, it is ironic that Asuka's hits can be overlooked so easily. Think about it, if a young boy suddenly had his p**is touched, accidentally or not, by a girl, he probably would just shove her off because if he hit her face, everyone would call him violent. Children who are used as child weapons are essentially taught that violence via their mecha skills is the ONLY solution to solve humanity's biggest problems, so quietly, it's the only solution for small misunderstandings.

Finally, the last episode was more philosophical than I thought. I didn't watch EP25 which I assume is the final battle because I don't think there is a sequel series. The ending didn't even explain what happened to humanity. But I think it's a good moral story to explain ego and self. The swap to 2D pencil drawings is a good way. Without depth, shadow, and background, a sketch exists limitless. I like how Shinji was always told what to do and how he should live. Even at his crisis, he asks people what he should do and how to live, they are the ones telling him the truth of how he should live. While I know the show is the one telling us the truth, to Shinji, it's still outsiders instructing him, even if they have his well-being in the best care possible. It was Shinji, experiencing the No Angels AU (that got to be an AO3 tag, if not, something like No Eva AU) or Middle/High School AU (love the silly shoujo reference with Rei, bread in mouth, "I'm going to be late on my first day of a school in this new city!", and headbumping ML, but not the accidental peeking), that he realizes the truth people have been trying to tell him this whole time. Funny how even his best friends care more about him than he does himself, and only when he really loves himself unconditionally, Eva or no Eva, even in a world where only he exists, that he can learn to actually love others, even his hated father becomes a person he can accept unconditionally. You realize after hearing all the voices, it's because they were people, not static faces with voices, that Shinji can compare his world and his self-image to everyone he meets in the show to find his true self.

It's such a roundabout way to explain everything. All anyone needs is a famous quote by a powerful warrior, one who transcended the mortal realm for his wisdom, bravery, and sheer popularity:

I never heard about ATLA until COVID-19. Funny because if I had heard of this show when it came out, I would have had a very different childhood.

In my attempt to do a spoiler-free review...

If I'm being honest... If I could go back in time... I'd tell myself not to watch this anime, which looks crazy since I was freaking out through most of it

Now it ticked lots of boxes before I went into it, but for it to tick even more when the anime already seemed perfect was incredible. So it ticked an extra three boxes. One of the before I watched it moments being that, I literally had only just made a rant about BL and how that label should be removed from animes and like, y'know, let us be surprised if the main character ends up in a same-sex relationship. Don't spoil it with the BL tag. But I'd made the Banana Fish post a month before that rant. I'd listed the Banana Fish genres, already hyped at it being a shoujo, made by a woman, with the delinquent/crime/psychological genres.

1. And so therefore, I did not go into this knowing that... it would end up being a BL. And anyone that tries to deny it was a BL is actually insane. The author could try and tell me this gay as fuck anime wasn't a BL and I wouldn't believe it (whether she has or not idk). Fucking heart emojis coming outta these fuckers eyes whenever they're in the vicinity of each other. I didn't screenshot the majority of it bc I'd too many screenshots. So yeah, this anime basically... did the exact thing I wanted in my rant. It's honestly the weirdest and most perfect timing. Legit shocked at the gay that happened in an anime not labelled as BL. I'm still not over it

Takahiro Kagami was the key animator. The animation director most known for YGO's signature style. YGO at its most beautiful. The guy who created Joey's chin. The animator they called back to animate DSOD and gave Joey his most perfect look

So I learn just before watching this anime that made me think of Joey in the first place, that Joey's key animator was working on this show? Incredible.

Joey's S!0 VA comes in as our main dudes trainer/mentor, who taught him how to fight and shoot. Like, I been comparing him to Joey the whole time and Joey appears?? What sorcery is this??????

So with the boxes out of the way, I'll list the positives outside of that:

Voice acting was fine, but the MC has risen up the ranks for me and this is my second time hearing him as a main character. Before that he was a side character in animes I barely remember. Actually I just finished Starmyu again and I think he was one of the less memorable characters (ok just checked and yes, also he was a little gay in that, he's always gay that's crazy). But he was fantastic, a scene stealer.

The animation was stunning (as expected). And it being set in New York added so much to that appeal. The action scenes... yes.

And for 24 eps it had a decent pace, I had a few days off so just binged it but took a lot of breaks (even tho it may not look like it lmao).

I had some good ass laughs.

Onto the negatives...

Now... this anime is rated an 8.5 and its very popular.

I rated it a 7.

So I decided on the 8 rating about a third of the way into the anime. It had the potential to be higher but... the anime got sloppy and repetitive. Super repetitive. And it drags, quite a bit. But bc of all the positives, I was like "ah... its going downhill a little but I'll still give it an 8."

Then something happened. And I... just couldn't give it that 8 anymore. What happened infuriated me. There's animes that can do what happened well, and I'll be upset but like, get it. Not in this one. I had to pause and breathe for about 3 mins before pressing play again.

Others may rate this anime low due to how triggering it can get. It didn't trigger me in any way but I can see how it could. The MC goes through a lot. I just wanted to protect him.

But uh, yeah. Due to the thing that happened I'd honestly rather have not watched this show. It kinda erased all the joyous, positive things that happened throughout, in a way. Idk. I need more time to sit on it.
