"So much fuss!" Wen Qing protests, only half meaning it, as they take turns kissing her. Mingjue shuts the bedroom door with a click before taking his turn; Xichen moves away, presumably to unmake the bed; it’s almost like they’ve choreographed the dance.
"We missed you," Yanli says and moves in to kiss her as soon as Mingjue steps aside.
--
Wen Qing comes home from a conference and gets quite the welcome back.
This is my contribution to the wonderful MDZS Women Flash Exchange! Frostferox’s prompts went perfectly with my “let Wen Qing be spoiled” agenda :3

Nie Mingjue's Age
Briefly popping back into Da-ge posting hours (this will not be long so no cut lolsob) to scream about this line from chapter 49:
当年,在聂明玦只有十几岁,清河聂氏的家主还是他父亲的时候,有人上贡给温若寒一把宝刀。温若寒高兴了几天,问身边客卿,你们觉得我这把刀怎么样?
Which I would translate as:
"Back in the day, when Nie Mingjue was still a young teenager, and the family head of the Qinghe Nie sect had still been his father, someone had given Wen Ruohan a treasured saber as a gift. Wen Ruohan was happy for a few days, and asked the guest beside him "what do you all think of this saber of mine?"
Here’s that line from the ExR translation:
“Back then, when Nie MingJue was only a teenager and the leader of the QingheNie Sect was his father, someone gifted Wen RuoHan a rare saber. Wen RuoHan was pleased for quite a couple of days. He had asked the guest cultivators—what do you think of this saber of mine?”
That same line from the official translation (which happens to be on two different pages, forgive me lmao):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing I want to scream about here is the phrasing of Nie Mingjue’s age in the Chinese, which says “只有十几岁” “only shijisui.” 十几岁 does refer to a very specific and kind of narrow age range, however it’s not a phrase that actually has a good English equivalent because it refers to the ages of 10-15, which in English is both pre-teen and teen wooo. BUT, the most common usage and definition of 十几岁 in Chinese is older than ten and younger than fifteen which. Means that at best, according to this line, Nie Mingjue was no older than a high school freshman when his dad died and could’ve been anywhere from finishing elementary school to a whole middle schooler!
(The best English equivalent of this sort of phrasing I can think of would be like, “early 20s” which in Chinese is the parallel 二十几岁 “ershijisui.”)
Okay time to lie down and cry.

just discovered something by accident
We know Niè Míngjué's name is 聂明玦 in og chinese, 玦 being a character for jade. Interestingly, there's another character written as jué in pinyin. 决, meaning to decide, or determine.
Which is fascinating, given it certainly takes a lot of determination to practice a form of cultivation that will make you lose your mind and lead to your early painful death.

After the conference with WWX:
Nie MingJue walked over, “All clever talk—hard work indeed.”
Hearing this, Lan XiChen smiled but said nothing. Jin GuangYao knew that Nie MingJue would teach him a lesson whenever he found the chance. Quite helpless, he tried to change the subject, “Huh, Brother, where is WangJi? I saw him leave early.”
金光瑶就知道聂明玦逮着个机会就要教育他好好做人
(ER translation, ch 73)
During the stairs:
Just as Nie MingJue unsheathed his saber, Lan XiChen happened to leave the palace to see what was going on, concerned after having waited for long. Seeing the situation before him, he unsheathed Shuoyue as well, “What happened, this time?”
Jin GuangYao, “Nothing. Brother, thank you for your advice.”
(ER translation, ch 49)
多谢大哥教诲
It's not the same word, 教育 vs 教诲, but I suspect there's more of an echo there than the ER translation might suggest.

my (probably easily solvable with just reading the necessary parts in the novel lol) problem with the post abt how it’s not that nmj doesn’t have any hobbies, it’s just wwx being unreliable, is... okay. “wwx knew this from the time my was working under nmj” -- how did he know this? was he close to them during that time? close enough to notice my’s attempts at finding nmj a hobby and nmj’s incompatibility with these? were there rumors about these that reached wwx’s ears? why would people talk about that, though? or did wwx come up with a random headcanon on the spot?
(i’m honestly puzzled by quite a number of things wrt the narration; often i can’t discern if the narration is from wwx’s pov, showing us what he knows, or if it’s omniscient narration that tells us the true state of things. in the first chapters of the novel, after wwx is brought back to life, a lot of the information feels too... informed to be wwx’s knowledge, unless he spends most of his time in inns gossiping with people, but also too flimsy/gossipy-sounding to be the Objective Truth.  that, or i’ve lost the ability to read lmao;;)
i do feel like empathy is less “a sequence of separate scenes shown by the deceased exactly as they want it” and more “the deceased sharing with wwx the state of having experienced their memories, with focus on the memories/feelings they want him to see”, though. nmj’s empathy sequence has time skips, sums up nmj’s dissastisfaction with his new deputy envoy without a concrete “scene” to illustrate it... therefore, my trying to “find nmj’s weakness/hobby” could be just something that happened between the lines that wwx/mxtx simply didn’t find important enough to describe earlier. it wouldn’t be surprising, considering other things that mxtx doesn’t consider necessary to write about.
wwx sure can misinterpret people’s activities, but i don’t see him coming up with a headcanon about something as mundane; he could have simply observed that nmj can taste “tea. that’s tea for sure, aye” regardless of the quality of the leaves, that he doesn’t care for wartime tension-relieving hookups or about the artistic properties of a calligraphy scroll. the “meng yao was trying his best to find something in nmj that he could exploit later” bit is a bit confusing again, because it talks about my’s intent that was somehow noticeable for either nmj or wwx or both. but then, i could easily imagine my trying to get nmj to relax, asking him how he unwinds and then trying to find something for him (and failing), or alternatively: nmj adding the “everything he did was to figure out my weaknesses to exploit my trust!” tint in, uh, post-production.
on the other hand, i also simply wonder if the 当年孟瑶在聂明玦手底下做事时魏无羡就见识过了 sentence has anything in the phrasing that would hint at how exactly wwx obtained the ~intel~: personally during the war or via empathy. hmm
in general though -- i don’t think that nmj having no hobbies other than practicing his saber is necessarily bad, or something a hater would say. dude seems like someone who’s busy as hell, and there’s a certain straightforwardness about him that just gives me the idea that he’d be... rather utilitarian in the things he does. he focuses on the saber training because the nie sect Does Sabers Here, sir, to the point that he doesn’t even go “okay whatever, my did is shit at the saber, let him be a diplomat instead” but constantly nags him about saber practice. practice your saber, and you’ll be a good sect leader, and you’ll be able to protect people and vanquish evil. functionality!
and if he sees a painting, well, does the painted mountain succeed at looking like a mountain? then it’s a good painting, he guesses. is the calligraphy legible? then it’s good. but are they useful? if it’s a book with lan rules, a map, a name of a pavillion or a motto for the disciples to live by -- then sure, but if it’s yet another poem about the beauty of flowers? eh, they’re fine. a character written on fancy paper solely to be beautiful? in what way is it going to influence you? it’s not? then why have it in the first place. an expensive fan painted by a master painter? you’d cool yourself down just as effectively with a blank, cheaper one. etc, etc

Names & Title
Name
Niè Shuǎngnǎo (聂爽瑙)
爽 - shuǎng - bright, clear; frank, straightforward; to feel well
瑙 - nǎo - agate (a gemstone)
The name is inspired by Mingjue's (明 - bright; opposite dark, 玦 - penannular jade pendant) since I wanted them to have some kind of 'family way of naming' sons. I know Huaisang differs, but my reason for that is my hc that his mum died in childbirth and he got the name she wanted due to that.
Agate is also a gemstone found in the Hebei province, which Qinghe is inspired by.
Title
Zhuófēng-zūn (灼锋尊) - blazing edge
灼 - zhuó - luminous; burning; to burn; to cauterize
锋 - fēng - point of a spear; edge of a tool
尊 - zūn - honorific
Once again inspired by Mingjue's title. With Nie being known for their sabers, I felt like there could very well be a tradition where any titles they're given are based on their saber skills. For SNS, I let him have a special technique where his blade get engulfed by green fire and that's the base of his title.
Saber
Yázì (睚眦)
Like Baxia, Yazi is one of the Nine Sons of the Dragon. It looks like a hybrid of a dragon and a leopard or dhole (aka whistling dog). It's known for its bad temper and love of fighting and were regularly depicted on the hilts of sword (both single and double edged ones). Just like I let Huaisang's saber get named after a mythological creature, I let SNS's saber too get its name from one. Yet another Nie tradtion, perhaps?

LXC would've gotten disbarred
After I kind of drifted away from the cnovel translation forum I used to be a part of, like, a decade ago, I thought to myself: my translator days are over! I will not translate stuff again! The post about if NMJ has hobbies (found here if you want to see it) was merely a blip on the radar of “not translating anything.”
Alas, I appear to have descended into a new pit, and that is seeing things in the other translations of mdzs and going back to the Chinese to look at things, discussing with @autumnslantern and just, translating snippets of this book and then deciding to share the results.
In this case, it’s a passage from Chapter 73, which is doing the rounds again, but I’ve most commonly seen as evidence for “LXC really wanted to say something about the treatment of the Wens but got steamrolled by NMJ’s objections” and I kind of just want to wave at the title of this post because if Chinese Novel!Xichen had been my defense lawyer, I would fire him. I would want him disbarred lol. I love him but this was not a shiny moment of Xichen getting steamrolled.
Again, this appears like it will get long, so meta under the cut:
The passage in question in this one, which is early on in Chapter 73:
Tumblr media
The fantranslation I have access to says this:
Lan XiChen responded a moment later, “I have heard of Wen Qing’s name a few times. I do not remember her having participated in any of the Sunshot Campaign’s crimes.”
Nie MingJue, “But she’s never stopped them either.”
Lan XiChen, “Wen Qing was one of Wen RuoHan’s most trusted people. How could she have stopped them?”
Nie MingJue spoke coldly, “If she responded with only silence and not opposition when the Wen Sect was causing mayhem, it’s the same as indifference. She shouldn’t have been so disillusioned as to hope that she could be treated with respect when the Wen Sect was doing evil and be unwilling to suffer the consequences and pay the price when the Wen Sect was wiped out.”
Lan XiChen knew that because of what happened to his father, Nie MingJue abhorred Wen-dogs more than anything, especially with how intolerable he was toward evil. Lan XiChen didn’t say anything else.
One of the sect leaders spoke up, “What Sect Leader Nie said is quite right. Besides, Wen Qing is one of Wen RuoHan’s most trusted people. You’re telling me she never participated? Well I don’t buy it. Is there any Wen-dog without a single drop of blood on their hands? Maybe it’s just that we haven’t found out about it yet!”
Which I got from this source on the internet. At some point I should invest in buying an actual physical copy of this text, but I spent my discretionary Chinese book money on a great copy of Yanxi Palace so I’ll have to wait on my physical MDZS copy.
Anyway, what follows are a bunch of screenshots of the translation process of this section and then some cleanup and a basic summary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Idk about you all, but I do not call someone a pejorative equivalent of WRH’s toady/crony/trusted ally, while saying “why would she stop his horrible crimes!” and then think that my good friend would have to “turn a blind eye” if we were to let her off when I’m trying very hard to defend her against the masses but am getting steamrolled into agreeing that she probably deserved it.
Indeed, the two things that LXC says in this scene are: “I have heard briefly of Wen Qing’s reputation, it does not appear that she personally murdered anyone…” and “she’s a crony of WRH, how would she have stopped his atrocities?”
Now, I actually like him more after realizing this fact, because he was being mildly bitchy about this! And honestly, given that the Wen burned down his house and killed his dad and killed a bunch of Lan cultivators and broke Wangji’s leg and kidnapped Wangji and nearly killed Xichen himself and he had to flee with a bunch of their sacred texts…I’d say he’s earned the right to be bitchy about them.
But also if I were Wen Qing depending on Zewu-jun for his excellent defense lawyering skills at my criminal trial I would want him disbarred. And also fired.
