there had been many things in her life that bo-katan had learned to find she was not proud of. one of those was leading maul to mandalore. she had her reservations, but ultimately, with vizsla, she had been confident that it was the right choice. she had not one, but two deaths weighing on her conscious because of him -- both of vizsla and her sister. her sister's weighed heavily on her. while they had not been incredibly close their entire lives, she had led death watch to overthrow her rule. she had been the one to lead maul here. while maul may have been the one to kill her, she had not fully placed the blame on him. no, that blame had fallen on her.

with her helmet on, she looked at him. even though he could not see her expression, not yet, the rage echoing from her was evident. she was tense, her hands aching to just pick up her blasters and shoot at him. however, she knew it would be futile. especially against him. there was blaster fire outside of the throne room, echoing in her ears. she hated that this was what her homeworld had become. it was constant battles, constant fighting. more and more, she was beginning to understand why satine had been so insistent that there be peace. people would associate all of this with her. bo-katan kryze, the woman that led her people to destruction. that was, unless they were able to take this planet from under maul's grasp.

" revenge? " she could almost laugh. " revenge would be so much worse. " she stood still, the tone of her voice altered slightly by her helmet. " i will have mandalore back. " she would lay her life down to ensure that it happened. whatever it cost, she would pay the consequences. " you never deserved to sit on that throne. to hold that saber. " she looked towards the window then, an explosion happening in the distance. " every single person fighting out there wants you gone, maul. " turning back to him, she tilted her head slightly. " i hope you enjoyed your time warming that seat, i would start looking for whatever planet you'll inevitably crawl off to. "

Now. Reasons reasons reasons. Where to begin.

I took my time thinking about this question bc there are quite a few downworlders I have an affinity to. But the showdown where it was REALLY hard to pick one or the other was the battle of the warlocks…

Tessa or Magnus.

On the one hand, I love Tessa So much (wrote a piece on why you can find here hehe) and I truly think she is a timeless character (well before she became literally timeless ie. immortal) and her influence throughout the shadowhunter world is iconic, relevant and enduring.

However… her choices and inner narrative became a bit clumsy dealt with and a bit inconsistent unlike Magnus’s, as the shadowhunter novels went on. Of course, characters are allowed to change, grow, develop at any age, but her character felt slightly manipulated in the writing? All for the sake of peddling the plot. Not to get TOO into the whole herongraystairs touchy topic but I do think as I’ve grown up and done over a handful of rereads I do spot the slight manipulation that started then, which kind of set a precedence in her character throughout. I adore Jem but he as well was felt a bit clumsily. Topic for another time.

Meanwhile Magnus, while through his own self discoveries and through his own immortalities feels more cleaner in plot. He’s necessary, vibrant, witty and is that character that you ALWAYS look forward to reading. He is That character that just lights up a room and you wait with baited breath on what he’s going to say next. His air of lightness that he brings into every interaction makes you be able to read and listen to him all day long. With long promises made of laughter, sage advice, experience, history and adventure.

And because of this, when he is being serious, his words strike you when you least expect it and leave you stunned.

“You endure what is unbearable, and you bear it. That is All” (Clockwork Princess).

His bisexuality was handled wonderfully, and was truly one of the first stories I think our generation read where the sexual identity wasn’t about coming out but already at the stage of acceptance and fun loving. He remains respectful and doesn’t want Alec to rush out of the closet but rather does the best thing- inspire Alec to be the best version of himself in life which is finite. That’s the best thing a partner can really do for you.

However he isn’t a Mary Sue bc in every series he stars in the reader sees his vulnerabilities in pure daylight. And also has a plot line that challenges his Yodha immortal dogmas. Will being one weakness of his in TID, Camille and how she mistreated him and being alone in a very sad world. I don’t think these topics were explored nearly as well with Tessa.

And of course, his relationship and development with Alec is my top 3 relationships in all the shadowhunter world. It felt natural, wonderful, sizzling, exciting and steadfast. Didn’t feel too young or naive like I sometimes feel when reading Clace, but new enough to feel like the honeymoon will never end. And I think in part it’s because of Magnus bringing out the best in people, and how Alec chose him. Of all the people Magnus helps out, he actually doesn’t really ask much in return. But for once Alec did a double take on him and let Magnus take the reins of where their relationship will lead them. With great readership payoff 🥹💍

In fact, he has SO much to offer we got standalones, his own mini series with his partner and constant features in further novellas stories. There is no other character in the Shadowhunter chronicles who has been that centre stage as him. And he deserves all of it.

And yes, I'm still planning to revisit the "Bree Ruins Everything" episodes concerning concepts in modern witchcraft that certain parties claim are ancient but really really aren't. I also want to finish and release the Volunteer Educator's Showcase that I promised everyone last year before the burnout hit.

Taking Barbatos to a metal concert in the human realm

Barbatos x GN!Reader

“Barbie, are you sure about this?” You said as you clicked on the tour website, 

“You do know this is in my realm, right? You'll have to leave Diavolo alone for the day.” Looking at him you could see behind his calm composure he was bursting with excitement about going to a concert with you.

“I’m sure MC”

“Alright” You smiled at him gently before putting in your card details and ordering the tickets to go see his favourite band.

The time between getting your order confirmation and the day of the concert went by quickly. In his off time, you and Barbatos had gone shopping for clothes to wear, you wanting an excuse to ogle Barbados in something besides his usual uniform and him wanting to get something more in line with what you'd typically wear to a metal concert. Besides that, the two of you had spent a large amount of time listening to music together and exploring each other’s music tastes. He could talk for hours upon hours about the history of bands he liked and in turn you did as well.

Finally, the day came, the two of you said your goodbyes and soon enough found yourself in your home realm. You weren't too far from the venue and had enough time before you needed to start queuing to get near the front that the two of you decided to go to a nearby cafe and get something to eat and drink before the show. 

It was quite the sight, you dressed to the nines ready for a concert with Barbatos having let his hair grow out a few inches longer than he usually had it, he left it mostly unstyled letting it naturally fall how it wanted to. Dark makeup surrounded his eyes while spikes adorned every part of his outfit you could feasibly put them on. He looked incredibly hot to say the least. His jacket was covered in patches of both human and demon metal bands, some of which in languages you couldn't even begin to guess. 

As you began to queue you felt butterflies fill your stomach. You weren't sure whether it was nerve, anticipation or excitement. Possibly a mixture of all three but at the very least it served to let you know that yes, this truly is happening, you're taking the prince of hell, the future king of hell's butler to a human realm metal gig. A mere year ago this was something you'd never think you'd be doing.

“Barbs. Are you doing okay?” you ask looking towards him, there's nothing about him which would indicate otherwise, but knowing his tendency to cover up the state of his wellbeing it's always best to ask.

“I'm more than okay MC, you needn't worry about me” he smiles at you so sweetly that you can't do anything besides believe every word he's just uttered as truth.

Before you could continue pestering him you were being asked for your tickets and stamped on your hands to get into the venue. The second your feet stepped into the room you could feel the beat of the drums in your chest and the guitar in your throat. The energy of the room filled you completely making you smile as wide as you could towards Barbatos. 

He turned to face you matching the same smile, a spark of awe in his eyes. Together you turned towards the stage ready for the night.

hi everyone!

I hope you're all doing well! it occurs to me that I never actually said this, but I was on vacation with limited access to internet this past week and just got back this afternoon which is why I haven't been super active (all of my posts are on a queue which is why I still posted every day lol)

but I just wanted to give you all a little update on some fun stuff coming to this blog in the near future 💙

just to kick things off, I'm going to start out with one of my favorite motifs: vanitas/memento mori (hoping to get this one out tomorrow)

then, based on the polls, most folks were interested in seeing overviews of whole periods/styles and the most popular of those were the gothic/medieval revival of the late 1800s and then the high gothic/international gothic period of the middle ages itself. however, I received a special request to do carravagesque baroque (thanks so much for your interest and enthusiasm @ilikeitbetterangsty 🥰), so I think I'll start with that one and then go onto the others

eras tour!!

I'm going to the eras tour in minneapolis, and to celebrate I wanted to do like a ten day countdown, with each day being somehow themed to one of taylor swift's albums. I decided to edit each album cover with a historical painting that resembled the original cover art, so I will be posting one of those a day starting the 13th, along with an edit of a lyric from that album (non taylor swift fans I'm so sorry about this - feel free to block the tag "taylor swift eras (art history version)" if you don't want ten days of these edits on your dash)

lastly, idk if I've ever mentioned it here before, but I really love tarot art and I have a growing collection of absolutely stunning tarot decks. since I love both art history and tarot, I thought I would make a little tarot deck of my own and post the cards here! I have the first few already made and I'm thinking I'll probably post one every other day, and then just have normal edits on the non-tarot days. I'll start with the major arcana, and I can keep going if y'all want to see the rest, or I can stop there

“I can’t Prez. I just can’t right now. Mother Odd and Afareet gave Fute and I an order. Fute’s gotta make sure no more tampering of the future occurs and I need to root out the source of when this all happened and see if there’s any shred of the erased history left. I want to put this on hold Prez but I’m under orders. I can’t defy Mother Odd again…I just can’t do that. You of all people know why.”

*Prez’ expression suddenly softened. The demigod cleared his throat a little and began nervously rubbing the back of his head.*

“I uh… I know. L-Look Pats. I’m- I’m sorr-“

*Pats suddenly held his hand up to silence his brother. he appeared to be looking at something intently. Within the fragment of time.*

“Prez… I think I found something you and Fute gotta see…”

*As if on queue, Fute appeared next to his brother and they both began looking into the thread of time with Pats. As their eyes glowed, Pats began to shake intensely as they delved deeper into the vision. As the vision before them continued to play, Pats began to whimper as the shaking intensified. Fute and Prez suddenly grabbed a hold of Pats and just held him straight. Their brother suddenly began to cry out in distress*

“IT HURTS! IT HURTS! I THINK WE ARE DELVING INTO FORBIDDEN TERRITORY! THIS WAS SOMETHING NONE OF US WERE MEANT TO SEE! SOMETHING IS PROTECTING IT! ODD IN HEAVEN IT HURTS!!!

*Fute and Prez struggled to keep their one-armed brother standing. Supporting his weight as he was trying to collapse into their arms. He struggled to keep the vision playing before them. As the vision finally ended, Pats suddenly fell silent. His eyes suddenly dimmed as they slowly shut. the oracle had his hand over his heart. He was unresponsive as his form began to fade before them. Prez suddenly shot a look to Fute in pure panic, but Fute held a hand up.*

“He’s not. He’s just exhausted so much power that he’s slipped out of our plane. He needs time to recover and I suggest you do not bother him while he rests.”

*Prez breathed a sigh of relief, but the oracle grew an intense glare. He barred his teeth and let out a deep growl as he turned to walk away*

My story: Being a fan of most things Ryan Murphy does this poped up among my sugestions on Netflix when it arrived. The costumes, the music, the story and the characters and their diversity and representation are all so amazing and I feel myself getting pulled into the feelings, drama and subtle hints of queer history.

Teachable moments: Never give up on your dreams and who you are, the reward will come to you one day.

Best character: When Ace suddenly gets ill, his wife Avis has to step in and take over the studio for a while. Apart from her husband, Avis is openminded and even though it might scare her she follows her guts and greenlights the movie our lead roles are presenting. She knows how to use her privileged position and take chances when needed, even though it might wreck everything.

Best episode: "A Hollywood ending" (E7). In this last episode we get to see love, dreams coming true and the Oscars all at once. What more do you need?

Best quote: "A while ago you asked me to be your boyfriend and I said no, cause I couldn't see a future for us. But watching my movie get made, I realised aint nothing impossible." (Archie to Rock).

Fun fact: Several of the characters in the series are loosly or entirely based on famous people in Hollywood at the time. Rock is Rock Hudson, the moviestar. Jim Parson's character Henry Wilson was a famous agent for actors. Anna May Wong, who gets a part in the movie, was America's first big moviestar with Asian herritage. Hattie McDaniel was the first African American who achieved an Oscar, of which ceremony she wasn't allowed to attend due to the segregation laws. In the series, she's a big support of Camille.

tl;dr: we have some special blurry thumbnails now, but you won't see them much yet.

Thanks to a user who did a bunch of research and work to get this going, the client now generates the 'blurhash' of all files that have a thumbnail. This hash is essentially a micro-thumbnail, only about 34 bytes, that shows a very blurry coloured impression of the general shape of the image or video. They are usually used as placeholders when it may take time to load something--you have probably seen something similar on slower news websites.

You won't see these in hydrus itself much, since thumbnails load fast enough that we don't have to worry about placeholders. In the advanced ways of seeing files you don't actually own, however, I will now show you any file's known blurhash rather than the default 'hydrus' thumb. Same deal for damaged/missing files--if I can't fetch a thumb, I'll now fall back to the blurhash.

The more important thing is these hashes are now available on the Client API, under the normal 'file_metadata' call. If you are implementing a browser or similar and have access to a fast blurhash library, try them out! I've scheduled all users to generate the blurhashes for their existing files in the background, which will take a few weeks/months for users with hundreds of thousands of files (although, if you are working with this and want to hurry it along, remember the queue is manageable under database->file maintenance.

other highlights

The file history chart (help->view file history) now has a search panel, just like Mr Bones! You can search your import, archive, and delete history for creator x, filetype y, or any other query you can think of. Some of the math here got a bit weird, and I am sure I have missed out several 'cannot provide good numbers for this domain' situations, so let me know if you get any really stupid results or outright errors. There's more work to do here, like a button to hide the search panel, which I hope to push on in the near future.

Thanks to the same user above, we also have epub support! No 'num_words' yet, but it turns out epubs are just zip files with some html, so I think it'll be doable in future. Also, some rare incorrect jpeg rotations (for 'MPO' jpeg files) are fixed.

If you right-click on a selection of files, the 'open->similar files' menu now has a 'in a new duplicate filter page' command. This will initialise the filter page just looking at those files, hopefully making it simple to clear out the potential duplicates in any particular selection.

Unfortunately, I am retiring the Deviant Art artist search and login script. DA have been slowly killing their nice old API, and the artist search just went. Individual page URLs still seem to work, but I suspect they will be gone soon. Gallery-dl have a nice DA solution that works with the new API, so if you can't find the same content on a more open booru, that's my best recommendation for now.

I want to take a very simple cleanup week. Nothing too exciting on the changelog front, but I'll refactor some of the worst code into something nicer to work with.

RAMMSTEIN IN BERLIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey folks sorry for running a month late but better late than never, here's my 7th review of 2023, Rammstein!!!!!!! This was my 3rd time seeing them and on the day I saw them it had marked exactly 4 years since I last saw them, which was July 16, 2019 when I saw them in Prague. Exactly 4 years later, I saw them in Berlin and I saw them in an old stadium that has a dark history since Olympiastadion Berlin was the sight of the 1936 Summer Olympics, which was 3 years after Adolf Hitler ascended to power and it was of course the sight of Jesse Owens winning a gold medal. After 3 times of Rammstein coming to Berlin on the stadium tour, they finally came in a month that was favourable for me in the form of July because in 2019 and last year, they came in June, which both were no good for me as I wasn't travelling in June at all both those years. Also before I entered Der Feuerzone, I waited an hour and 45 minutes to buy merch, which consisted of a new Rammstein t-shirt and a Rammstein patch to put on my vest in the future and the queue was disorganized af, plus a bunch of locals were yelling "HELGA!" and I'm thinking "Who the fuck is Helga?" Of course I wouldn't find out until Wacken Open Air. So after I got my merch, I eventually found Der Feuerzone and I got my wristband.

Let's start the festivities!

First band up was Abélard. They reminded me of Duo Jatekok as both duos are French and they play Rammstein covers on piano, and of course they would both go on to make a guest appearance during Rammstein's set when they played Engel in Rammstein's first encore. I personally didn't find Abélard anything special as I wanted to save my energy for the headliners later in the evening. After Abélard got off the stage, people started doing the wave from the ground floor up to the seating areas and it was fun to do.

After doing the wave with the crowd to occupy my time it was time for RAMMSTEIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 3rd time seeing them live as I first saw them May 8, 2011 in Toronto as I remember queuing with my pals Nik and Tom for a good 8-9 hours to see them at the front, in which Nik and I didn't pass out from the intensity of the Pyro, then saw them 8 years later on July 16, 2019 in Prague, which smoked the Toronto show in a landslide for a multitude of reasons, and now exactly 4 years later, I see them in their hometown of their home country in Berlin, Germany, which is a show that will never get topped. The pyrotechnics and theatrics were nothing short of incredible especially the scene of Till blasting the cauldron during Mein Teil with a large flamethrower to try and cook Flake alive, Flake doing his dances, Till doing his vinrage Till hammer and even headbanging at times, etc. The crowd was definitely loud and passionate especially singing the lyrics of Bestrafe Mich, Zeit, Du Hast, Sonne, Engel, Ohne Dich, etc. I also got teary-eyed during Ohne Dich because it made me think of my recently deceased friend Elouise since the song means Without You in German, and without Elouise, life feels more empty. I'll also add, the day before the Rammstein gig when I had gotten into Berlin after changing planes in Dublin, I chatted with the immigration officer and she asked me the standard questions of "Whats the purpose of your trip?" And "How long are you here for?" For which I gave her truthful answers and before I left to cross the gate to go to the baggage carousel, I said to her "I'm going to see Rammstein tomorrow". She then gave me a double thumbs up and smiled and she replied "I'm seeing them on Tuesday" I then asked "Are you in the Feuerzone?" She replied "No" and I go "Aww, that's too bad". I'll also highlight that like the Prague show from 4 years ago, Rammstein had a 2+ hour set and there was no shortage of eye candy in the crowd, since I'm single. I also got a bit emotional during their last song Adieu, which made me think of Elouise. Here's Rammstein's setlist:

You tend not to ask Ikaris where he goes when he leaves for days at a time, but that doesn't stop your mind from wandering to the darkest places. Is he cheating on you? Does he have another family he goes home to? Is he a criminal? Can he really not see that his wife and son need him?

"Where's Daddy?" your son asks as you tuck him in for the night.

"He's out right now. He should be back in the morning."

You're going to make sure that he's back by the morning because this has been going on for too long.

"I miss him," your son sighs.

"Me too. Get some sleep. I love you."

You lean down and kiss his forehead, tucking him in before turning off his light. You leave his room but you stay in the hallway with unshed tears in your eyes. You love Ikaris with all your heart, but his disappearing act is getting old.

You remember when you first met him and how it was love at first sight, as cliche as it sounds.

If you don't get this paper to your professor now, then he's going to fail you and dock you a whole letter grade. You've already asked for two extension dates, and you cannot miss this one. You're rushing around your campus, not really paying attention to your surroundings when you slam into a person.

All of your papers go everywhere including your other belongings, scattering across the sidewalk.

"I am so sorry," you apologize, looking at the man standing before you.

Your breath is knocked out of your lungs at how beautiful this man is. He has bright blue eyes, a stubbled and sharp jaw, full lips, and short hair with a sliver of white in the front. This man is so beautifully sculpted that it takes your brain a few moments to play catch up.

"No, I'm sorry. Here, let me help you."

And this man has an accent? God damn. Your cheeks heat up as you gather your things with the help of the stranger.

"Are you okay?" he asks.

"Y-yeah. I-I'm really sorry. I'm late."

"Sure," he nods.

With the last piece of paper in your hands, you hesitantly leave his side. You wanted to stay and get to know him, but your professor is waiting on this paper from you.

That was the first time you met Ikaris, and like everyone else says, the rest was history. He actually met you after class to talk to you, and you ended up spending the whole day with him. He was trying to get over his ex, but it's like everything disappeared when you two were together.

Now, ten years has passed, you're married to him, and you have an eight-year-old son with him. Life is perfect when he's here with you, but lately, he's been spending more time apart from you. You don't know what is going on, but you have to get to the bottom of it.

Speaking of the devil, you hear his keys in the door, and you wipe your face of any tears before heading over to your husband.

"Sorry, I'm late, darling." He sets his keys and and closes the door when he notices the streaks of your ghost tears on your cheeks. "What's wrong? Is Caleb okay?"

"Caleb is fine. Where were you?"

"I had some business to take care."

"You know, I never ask what you do or where you go because I trust you to always be honest with me, but lately, I feel like you're putting me third. I'm your wife, Ikaris. I deserve better than your secrets."

"I know you do. Everything I do, I do for you." He walks closer to you and grabs the sides of your face so that you can't look anywhere but him. "I love you, Y/N, more than you know."

"I love you too."

He pulls you close and kisses you, molding his lips to fit yours. These are the best kind of kisses--ones where you crave but you know you can't have until the moment you do, and it's everything you ever dreamed it would be and more.

Ikaris scoops you up in his arms and takes you to the bedroom to show you just how much he misses you.

You wished you could be in your perfect bubble, but all good things must come to an end. Ikaris is out right now to pick up some groceries for the week while you and Caleb are watching the news. There is news of something going down with some alien shit that Earth has no business being in. It seems like as soon as the Avengers were founded, the Earth has been in the middle of danger when she shouldn't be.

This time, people called the Eternals are here to stop some Celestial from destroying Earth. It seems about the same threat that Thanos brought not long ago. You don't know who all the Eternals are, but you've seen clips of them fighting what's known as Deviants. If they weren't so evil, you'd mistake them for beautiful creatures.

So far, you know that there are at least four Eternals. One can fly and shoot lasers out of his eyes, one can alter the structure of one thing into another, one who can change their appearance, and one who can shoot magic out of his fingers. There have been reports of Deviants attacking people, and someone always finds a way to record these Eternals.

It's a dangerous world out there, and you're glad that your family is normal.

These Eternals have a lot of shit to go through, and rumor has it that one of their own is trying to get this Celestial to take over Earth, but you don't know who it could be.

"Who are those people, Mommy?" Caleb asks.

"Bad people. They say they want to protect Earth, but all they're doing is making it worse."

As soon as Ikaris got back, you decided to go on a walk with him and Caleb to enjoy the fresh air and quiet evening. You don't think anything bad could happen, but with the threat of Eternals and Deviants, anything could happen. Still, you don't want to be stuck in the house forever.

Hand-in-hand, you and Ikaris walk loosely behind Caleb who is running ahead and chasing some of the birds on the streets.

"Caleb, stay close to us!" you call out.

"Okay mommy!"

You're taking a walk by the park near a big ass lake when Caleb gets a little too close to the edge for your liking. Shaking your hand out of Ikaris', you rush over to your little one to pull him to safety before he falls in and potentially drowns.

"Baby, you can't get too close. You could fall in."

"Mommy, what is that?" Caleb points out.

There is something in the water, and the more it shows itself, the more you realize that this is a deviant. You hold Caleb close and get prepared to run as soon as the Deviant lunges for you two. Right before you thought you were going to be Deviant food, something comes out of nowhere and slams into the body of the creature, tossing it back into the trees.

You can't see who it is, but you look around for your husband, hopeful that you three can get to safety and away from this creature.

"Ikaris!" you call out, not seeing him anywhere.

The person attacking the Deviant shoots at it from the lasers in his eyes. He's flying all over the place trying to destroy this creature, much like Superman. Caleb often calls this person Superman, which irritates the hell out of Ikaris.

There's something familiar about the person, though, and only until he lasers the creature in half, do you really see who he is. Your eyes are wide, you hold Caleb close to you, and you're in complete shock at your husband who gently lands on the ground after defeating the creature.

"You're--"

"I wanted to tell you," he cuts you off.

"You're Superman Daddy!" Caleb giggles.

He wants to go over to him, but you hold him back from approaching him.

"Ten years, Ikaris. I gave you ten wonderful years, and you couldn't bother telling me that you were never going to grow older? That you would outlive both of us in a matter of a couple of centuries?"

The look of betrayal on your face breaks his heart, but all he was doing was trying to protect you.

"I wanted to tell you, Y/N, but I didn't want to put you in danger."

"Oh bullshit!" you exclaim loudly. "You don't think this conversation would have come up in a year or so when I'd notice you didn't age a fucking day since we met?! Fuck you, Ikaris."

"Y/N, please let me explain," he tries, but you don't want to hear it.

"No, stay the hell away from me. Come on, Caleb." you say and hold onto your son's hand tightly.

"But Daddy..."

"Daddy isn't Daddy right now. Come on."

It broke Ikaris' heart to hear you say that, but it's his own damn fault for not telling you ten years ago. Would you have given him a son and a marriage if you had known? Is it worth the heartbreak now?

"Y/N, please," he begs, but you're already walking away.

but in all seriousness, the books I've read on this list - Song of Achilles and The Chosen and the Beautiful - they were both pretty excellent, and the synopses for the rest sound like some really interesting places to build retellings from. this list also has much more YA than most articles I share, for all my YA-heads out there.

also, as long as I'm gassing up Nghi Vo (author of The Chosen and the Beautiful)...

this list contains some of my most anticipated novels of 2022, namely Vo's Siren Queen and Grace D. Li's Portrait of a Thief (which I hopefully will have read by the time this post is published...). other gems in this list of fic and nonfic include the memoir of a Vietnamese restaurant, a Chinese American revenge western, and a pulsing short story collection centered on Cambodian-American life.

next up: that's right, we've got yet another longlist for a literary award none of you have ever heard of!

sometimes I get real cocky and go into these lists thinking there can't possibly be any titles I haven't already heard about - only to be abruptly and delightfully proven wrong! this list includes bruja vigilantes, an alternate history in which thousands of women turned into dragons in the 1950s, a space opera full of time travel and galactic politics, and a queer King Arthur retelling. personally, my interested is piqued by the delightfully odd-sounding Saint Death's Daughter.

and now for something completely different:

as I queue this up several weeks in advance, I am once again attempting to find my peace with poetry - thank you, Audre Lorde! this list contains not one, not two, but THREE collections I'm actually really looking forward to by Ocean Vuong, Akwaeke Emezi, and Saeed Jones, and if there's something here for me then there's got to be something for anybody.
