Just a wee update 💛

Wanted to apologise for how spacey I've been lately. I know there are folks I normally talk to more often, and I have unanswered messages and asks and comments all over the place, and this isn't an excuse or anything, but I'm really struggling with a case of autistic burnout right now. I'm finding it hard day to day to have the spoons I need for just living life, I had two meltdowns earlier in the week, and honestly I'm just exhausted.

I've taken a day of impromptu holiday this coming Monday so I have a long weekend to rest and recover, and tbh I already knew I was on the edge of this last week, which is why I warned at the end of the last chapter of BTTW that I was planning a break.

Please be patient with me, and know that if you're not seeing me around or hearing from me in a way you would usually, it's not personal. I'm just hibernating a bit 💛

ok i need to. rethink my dnd campaign plans because my players’ characters are so stupid (NOT MY PLAYERS! THE CHARACTERS!) that today they managed to fail every single investigations check/roll that would have revealed any of the intrigue & worldbuilding. every. single. one

#in retrospect they also failed these last session. which is. #this is a team of himbos #actually ok we are use the see you space cowboy ttrpg not dnd i just say dnd as a shorthand #and their brain stats aren't even BAD like it's not anybody's BEST skill #but it's second best for two people #and somehow they are. not even partial success (like 50% chance AND they have rerolls if they've previously failed). all failures #orz #on the other hand they managed to completely curbstomp a. well it wasn't a hard fight but it wasn't supposed to be that easy LMAO #while not intending to fight but rather run the fuck away #they failed their running away rolls like 4 times and so just had to retaliate to being attacked #they took out each opponent in ONE ATTACK #meme abt 'guy crying and screaming but he's obviously winning the fight' #anyways the combat was probably the most successful scene so far in terms of player engagement which is GREAT but also profoundly funny #because they were in way less danger than they thought they were. you can't even die in this game #new thing learnt abt my players: they are cowards when it comes to the health & livelihoods of their characters #which is very good that's a fantastic trait for getting them attached to & embodying their characters and means i don't need to curb overly #risky behaviour that doesn't make sense in the story context #but also means. i need to kinda railroad them into not running away from every noise in the dark lmaooooo #bytebun rambles #high moon

saying that aisha has resigned herself to being one of the boring (16yos who think they're) adults in the room during gm would not be true because she still has a silly streak. but it's a Tragic silly streak now because her hopes for truly staying silly with it died when the person she wanted to stay silly with did. and now all of her silly behaviors come with the underlying acknowledgement that no one there is actually really paying attention to or getting her beyond seeing her as, like, an endearing annoyance who knows longer words now. literally outright makes a "pro tip just ignore me it's what everyone else does lmao" joke in front of canary and everyone. Just ignores that. ignores that she said that. taylor does not even stop to think "maybe that means something" she just moves on. and aisha also, despite literally still being in the same age range as alec was when he died, has now upped the things she was able 2 observe about him when he was alive (bc she's perceptive) into a full-on psychoanalytical retrospective wherein she certainly wishes that he was still around/had gotten to grow up with her but on some level is aware that he didn't and died when he was still a very sad little boy who understood effectively nothing about himself. so she explains how his brain worked to people who didn't know him well enough to see the obvious. and she talks about him in affectionately diminutive terms like constantly calling him an asshole because the thing she remembers fondly is that they were both asshole kids Together. but she is no longer an asshole kid, she's in charge of asshole kids now. her method for stopping them from being assholes is, often, out-assholing them, but she's still in charge of them.

which is to say that even if you bring alec back from the dead via ciara as early as humanly possible in an AU where he somehow got glastig uained his relationship with aisha is going to be weird and sucky for everyone involved because he was expecting his Fun Best Friend he remembers having lengthy personal conversations with just a few days ago back and she wants the person alec would've been if he'd gotten to grow up with her. but neither of them get that. alec only gets what he would probably term Lame and Mopey aisha and aisha only gets the alec that takes 12 business days to realize he just experienced an emotion. :(.

although. there are nonzero odds that they would meet in the middle (aisha is like "Hey man you know it takes you 12 business days to realize you just experienced an emotion right? you do have them though" and alec is like "what no really? seriously? aw shit okay" + alec starts infecting aisha with The Sillies again, which is actually good for her psychological wellbeing but pisses absolutely everyone else off)

Hello everyone! I'm Tom (he/him), and I decided to join Writeblr to make some more writing friends. I have no idea how any of this works, but let's give this a go and see what happens!

My Writing

I mainly write YA sci-fi, though I'm open to a bunch of other things

I started writing seriously in April 2021, messed around with a few projects, finally finished a first draft in 2022, shelved it, and have been project hopping ever since. But I've finally found a story I have passion for, so here's hoping purgatory is over!

Beneath the Burning Sky

I call this story Berg for short, after my friend was very mean and called it ice Dune lol. This is my main focus, and a book I hope to traditionally publish someday. I have no idea how much I'm allowed to share with that caveat, so I'll probably avoid major plot things.

Genre: YA sci-fi sapphic romance

Status: Currently drafting, approximately 25K

Description: When they're both stranded in the frozen wilderness by an attack on their planet, Lana (a village hunter) tries to bring Sierra (the president's daughter/rising star of the stage) back home. Rivals to lovers, class conflict, winter survival. Lana may have a long-lasting crush on Sierra from watching her performances on TV. Also sentient flying snake aliens which are very friendly. Mostly. I promise I will write an actual blurb soon lmao

To Dream of Brighter Shadows

This has a very complicated history which I won't go into now, but in it's current form, it's a project I desperately want to write some day. The discovery writing I've done for it so far is by far my best prose.

Genre: Adult literary sci-fi

Status: Discovery writing

Description: A university student struggling with burnout and undiagnosed neurodivergence uses VR cybernetic implants to try and rebuild her old life.

Space Spies

This is entirely vibes right now, but it'll probably be the book I write when Berg's first draft is done.

Description: A world made of floating islands, trees that are impossibly tall, reverse waterfall elevators, magic airships, teleporters, matchlocks? There is no plot.

Ok watched spiderverse 2 again here's some thoughts in no particular order (spoilers and long post ahead):

- peter b is reading a book called "how to talk to kids" at the very end. Presumably because may can't speak yet and Gwen and Miles were zapped away I choose to believe he was reading this so he can go talk to Miguel LMAO

- I fucken love the way spot, after he powers up, move around via just like... sliding around in the air basically with his bad posture like he's hung from strings like a puppet

- when gwen is drumming at the opening and when spot gets zapped both are intercut with frames from later in the movie and also later in the future. I'm guessing spot got a glimpse of canon events but when Gwen was doing her intro it was phrased like a retrospective- but unlike most intros it didn't have a shot of a new spiderman comic being thrown on the pile. So when was she doing this retrospective? I hc she'll pick back up at the end of the third movie

- someone needs to make procreate brush packs for each universe/character PLEASE

- ok the "watercolor" effect being a mood ring is incredible but I havent seen anyone talking about the sort of abstract animation?? It almost reminds me of like experimental film from the impressionist/dada/supremetism eras, you can see it synced to the drum in the intro and also in some of the backgrounds during her big speech

- also during the Guggemheim fight when the Renaissance Vulture was like "you call this art?" And Gwen was like "well we're talking about it aren't we" YOU'RE SO RIGHT GWEN I AM KISSING YOU ON THE LIPS

- the shaky 1st pov cam when Gwen's dad sneaks up on her both times reminded me of when Miles accidentally watched kingpin kill perfect Peter? Idk if it was exactly the same I'd have to go back and rewatch but UGH it really gets that Gwen's dad has two sides too and the cop side isn't really human almost, lurking in the shadows, silhouetted

- also Gwen's dad just being a shit cop, giving her mixed instructions, raising a weapon at an unarmed person who is trying to communicate, firing warning shots, yelling the Miranda rights over her which is not how its supposed to be given

- contrast that with Jeff who literally never pointed a weapon at anyone and went charging after spot with his bare hands, is casual with his spiderman. I mean even when Jeff was talking about Miles not capturing Spot correctly it was lighthearted and joking, he's actively not going by the book, he's keeping the squad off of Spiderman's back, he apparently talks to spiderman about his family troubles???

- have I mentioned I LOVE MUSICAL MOTIFS????? Seriously they’re always good (fuck Wagner everyone knows Toby Fox invented the leitmotif) I mean everyone noticed the horror style Prowler stinger but even more characters got some: Gwen got a Little Rock theme with a guitar lick that echoes the ‘spi-der-man, spi-der-man’ song, Miguel’s distorted synth whine, the interesting mouth and bells percussion that Pav gets (good job Hollywood avoiding the exotic Asian pentatonic lick for once), at the end when the 42 prowler reveal slowly changed the prowler stinger into a human scream???? There’s probably more but I’d have to go back and watch it again again lmao

- I really love how Miguel is kinda goofy. He’s aloof and over serious but he makes mistakes and shows other emotions despite his best efforts. His flaws are shown off in his very first interaction, with his unwillingness to ask for help despite the fact that he knows he needs it. He’s frustrated. He’s got group object leader energy. It makes it so much more lovable that he’s susceptible to quips and he also gets knocked down and messes up and shows up and has his quirks that everyone puts up with. THATS how you make an interesting, relatable, lovable antagonist. Perhaps it worked too well LMAO

- I am an Oscar isaac simp I gotta go rewatch moon knight

- when miles was swinging around with gwen he passed a truck called "redex" bc gwen rejected him lmao

- theres an 8 clearly visible in the background of earth 42? Wacc

- the Spread Your Wings, Man scene focusing on the plastic wrap on top of the Alchemax flowing in the wind like it’s an ocean?/??? I really hope they call back to that imagery later because it clearly means something and I need to know what

- I’ve got an inkling of something that specifically revealing one’s spider-dentity to a loved one is some kind of anti-canon event, like maybe it’s the thing that fixes the destabilization? I mean we’ve seen that it’s ok if loved ones figure it out themselves (or if they then die, like uncle Aaron) like it’s a clear theme that miles keeps trying to tell his parents, and then Gwen tells her dad, which causes him to quit the force, thereby averting the canon event of him dying indirectly??? Also, it’s implied that the MJ of 1610 sold out Perfect Peter Parker to Fisk, leading to his death, ALSO also, gayatri probably figured out Pav’s identity right before HIS world destabilized??? Idk lmao

- I hope spiderbite/Margo and Jess get proper intros I can’t wait

- the background spider hockey girl has my heart, I couldn’t stop looking at her during the chase scene

- God I need to watch moon knight again

- when mj moved into mays room to greet them she lifted a picture frame back up as she moved in the door? What's up with that???

- not Spanish originally starting as a too-relatable joke that Miles gets a B in despite his mother speaking Spanish at home as well, not living up to his expectations, and then 42!Miles presumably speaks more/better Spanish due to being closer to his mom because his dad died???

- most importantly: what was up with the Comic Code Authority’s seal being shown after the studio logos at the beginning??

Did that happen in the first one??? Why would it be there??? The cca has obviously been defunct since before superhero movies were really a thing. Famously, the cca seriously censored a ton of content, causing Marvel to be unable to portray darker stories involving drugs and other more mature themes, which they wanted to do with many superheroes including Spidey??? Is the Spider Society secretly the cca, censoring storylines that they think shouldn’t be portrayed, including darker timelines like 42? There was also issues with the convoluted Spider-Man comic lines going through unsatisfying ‘resets’ to keep Spider-Man relatable, without evolving the character into anything too far away from the OG Spider-Man, ie young, relationship issues with MJ, nerdy, tragedies etc. this is the detail that had me wondering the most because it was so clearly displayed right at the beginning, and the cca was generally a shameful part of comic book history in which publishers submitted to satanic moral panic. Like, not really something that reads as a cute little callback to an era of comics like he use of Ben day dots or misaligned printing or the onomatopoeias??

Which character should I choose to ask you about for the character game?.. Hmm, I don’t even know… Let me think… SEBASTIAN please! :D

DIANA!!! MY GLORIOUS MOOT (may I call you Diana???), THANK YOU. AHHHHHHHHHHH. (...I'm just a little bit excited. Can you tell? XD)

1. How I feel about this character

Hmmm, well... so, it's complicated. I obviously adore Sebastian, that's a given, but I will say that it took me a while to get past his attitude during my first playthrough because I felt like I was watching teenage me self-combust. In retrospect, that's probably why I wrote my series (and from his POV) because the ending of his storyline felt like a punch to the gut, and I needed to freaking FIX IT.

Besides that whole can of worms, when I can separate the character from teenage me, I think he's the most fleshed out character in the game. He's so well-written and his backstory is so tragic. And the SNARK (especially with Ominis)! I just go absolutely feral over it.

2. All the people I ship romantically with this character

Besides shipping him with my OC, Damien, I ship him with @heyitszev's Charlie (from his series To be Loved is to be Changed). <- READ IT FOLKS. GOOD SOUP!!! I actually ship him with most M!MCs to be honest with you. LMAO. But I do have a hard time reading really dark Sebastian. I like him with a bit of spice, so to speak (not too hot, not too cold vibes), I suppose.

3. My non-romantic OTP for this character

Ominis. I don't know why, but I can't get into Sebinis. I WANT TO LIKE IT SO BAD. (I actually see the dynamic between my husband and me as Ominis/Sebastian, so you'd think I'd like it, but alas.) They are just best buds in my brain. Their personalities are very different, but sometimes that just works, you know? They complement each other in a platonic way. Most importantly, Ominis gets exasperated with Sebastian's antics a lot, but he will always forgive him in due time.

4. My unpopular opinion about this character

I'm actually not sure if this is unpopular, per se, but I'm not into Dark Sebastian, unless he's in "protecc"-mode. It seems unrealistic to me. If MC doesn't send him to Azkaban and MC, Ominis, and Anne are there for him and eventually forgive him (which is what happens in my head canon), I don't think he's physically capable of becoming a Dark Wizard. The events of Hogwarts: Legacy happen when he is 15/16, after all. He is still so young. Teenagers make mistakes. (AND YES, I do realize he made a more egregious mistake than most teenagers... but the point still stands, at least IMO.)

5. One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Two things. I wish we could have given Sebastian some semblance of happiness at the end of the game. A hug would have been a good start. LMAO. But SECONDLY! I wish he didn't freaking ignore us after everything! I'M SO BITTER ABOUT THIS. Avalanche, please change this in the summer update. Pretty please????

HSHQTASK059: FAREWELL

when did you join ? what made you join ? what do you remember from the plotlines that were current at the time ? where were you in life when you joined and where are you now ?

I joined in June '17! I was on my summer break and needed some casual fun hobby. I had been in other groups but I hadn't stuck in one. Then HSHQ came and stole me away. I think when I joined the major plot was the Portuguese-Italian attack on Spain. I had picked a Brazilian crown princess and since she was related to the Portuguese, I got involved in it a bit. I remember having a hard time understanding the lore and reasoning behind it and it's why Flavia was kind of anti-Braganzas lmao. Retrospectively, I was looking for a logical reason when I should have understood that "for the drama" was a valid reason haha

which characters have you written over the years ?

Flavia, Fanni, Lixue, Roman, one Andorran, Robbie... I think that's all? I've been quite conservative with my roster.

what is your favourite plotline that you've been part of ?

It would have to be Roman's arch. I liked the fact that it had a proper ending and a clear storyline. It was also the kind of story I had never had the chance to write because it required so much time and it required loyalty from all members. It was an unique experience so it gets the special mention.

what about other people's plotlines ?

I think I'll give this one to Sergi-Remei-Chico thing. The whole Spanish fires, Spain vs. Catalonia + Andorra vs. France. I think it was a compact set of stories that worked individually but still created a larger story. Okay, now that I think about this a bit more, this is probably a cop out since Fanni was somewhat involved in this, but I swear I'm talking about Chimei more than France's role in all of this.

who is your favourite character from the ones you've played ? why ? what made you love them ? what made them so fun to write ?

I can't choose between Roman and Fanni. I think it's pretty clear to everyone that I love Fanni. She has had some of the best plots that I've ever had the chance to write and there hasn't been a dull moment with her. Through Fanni I got to write some complex and dark feelings, and I think it worked as some kind of therapy too because when I put some of those feelings into words, I got to rationally look at some of deeper and hidden feelings I myself harboured. I do want to put a disclaimer here that Fanni is a much much much unhappier person than I am but I think everyone can relate to comparing yourself to others or feeling like a lesser person? If you don't know what I'm talking about, this is very awkward lmao. The emotional side of writing Fanni was fun and I feel like I made so many discoveries and felt proud of my writing. But.... Roman is so special to me. He was a complex character and a character I had to spend time on a lot. I really had to think about his motives and I had to find a backstory for him that worked. His relationship with Giselle was one of my favourite relationships to write because there were so many emotions stitched into it. I think I should write the relationship task for them just to get all of my thoughts out. Roman was interesting to write. That is all. And I echo Hails' words when I say that it was fun to write a more down-to-earth character. Someone who wasn't overly wealthy and obnoxious. I enjoyed writing characters for Eastern Europe. It was maybe an easy option to choose since it's what I know well. I'm a bit saddened by the fact that I didn't get the chance to write about Fanni's complexes more. It would have been fun to expand on her tough relationship with Hungary.

if you could relive a plotline, which would it be ?

Oooooh.... I think I'd go with post-break up Farnauld? It was a very exciting time and the interactions were fun to write. What I would change would be how we ended up extending the break up? The reconcilation should have happened a year quicker haha. Wait no. That's my second option. My first option would be Isanni in the beginning. Their interactions were super intense and I loved the complexity of their relationship. I'm very pleased with their storyline but I wish I had written the beginning more.

is there a plotline that you'd edit now if you could ?

I know if I edited these plotlines, Fanni would be somewhere different so technically I wouldn't change these but... I think the beginning of Tekla and Fanni's interactions. I think I'd have Fanni be a bit more open. I would have liked to see their relationship as a supportive one. The other one that I'd edit would be Fanni and Nadya. I think it would have been fun to have them actually become friends. I do stand behind my replies, they were accurate portrayals but I think there was some wasted potential by having them end up being almost-friends.

what's a plotline you wish you would have been able to finish before closing or just write more of ?

Tekla and Fanni. I needed just one more thread gaah! Their dynamic was the most important one for me. Fanni's codependency on Tekla was so interesting and fun to write. I think an ending to their difficulties would have been cathartic.

what is your favourite ooc memory ?

I have to say I'm not that involved in OOC stuff as you guys have probably noticed haha. I enjoyed the HSHQfeed stuff and... Naomi's shanenigans.

what else would you like to say ?

I never thought a group would mean this much to me yet here we are! I've loved every second of it and I think I've been given a special opportunity to express myself through writing. Everyone's dedication has amazed me and I'm literally literally so so happy that I made HSHQ my home. I'm so sad that it has come to an end. I don't know if I would have had much more to give but it's hard to say goodbye. Seven years is a long time to know people! I can't believe I've graduated and switched jobs all while being here. If I compare my life pre-HSHQ and post-HSHQ, I can barely believe it myself! Thank you everyone, it's been a truly wonderful experience <3 I think I'll write a few things and if you still want to write a thread or two, don't hesitate to message me <3

what do you consider to be the best metal albums of all time? or your favs!

this ask has terrorized me all morning. thank you, and i mean this from the bottom of my heart, for sending it to me so i can talk about metal.

I am going to separate this into best, as in the classics i think hold up the best/are the most complete, and then my favorites (obv there is overlap but i'll ignore it).

Top 5 "Best" Metal Albums- the records you find on retrospectives and blog lists:

Black Sabbath- Black Sabbath. Not only a historic achievement of an album (the definitive point in which metal, for sure, existed) but also, i truly belive the best Sabbath record. The opening track itself is good enough everything else could be joke covers of the beach boys and I'd still put it here (they're also very good though. GOD. the wizard slaps)

Master of Puppets- Metallica. I know. I know. It's just solid all the way through, not a bad track, incredible opener and fantastic instrumental, everyone's said it all.

South of Heaven- Slayer. Again, undeniable. The Slayer record with the most literal heft and, well the closest thing to maturity the asshats of Slayer can achieve. The speed and ferocity of Reigh In Blood is still very good but over in a blink of an eye, while Heaven gives you more to be pummeled by. different kinds of anger.

Don't Break the Oath- Mercyful Fate. One of those true, blue perfect records, while also being beautifully cheesy. Like if a campy 80s movie about naked sacrifices to Satan was... really good with gorgeous cinematography. edges out Melissa by the narrowest margins (production is more suited for their style, giving the guitars an edge and putting the vocals front and center)

Live After Death- Iron Maiden. I love Maiden so much but their albums always have one or two duds. even if they didn't, though, live after death would probably smoke them anyway- it's that good. getting to hear phantom of the opera in dickenson's voice... i like di'anno but that song deserved Theatre

I love all of these records, many of them are what got me into metal so if you are looking for a high-qualiy place to start...

But I'll put my favorites under a read more lmao

These I would consider my top ten favorite albums at this given moment:

Stained Class- Judas Priest (the best priest. to me. i got my pentagram stomach tat on her 45th anniversary <3)

Thundersteel- Riot (rock city might edge this one out but that records barely metal at all. THIS is the pinnacle if power metal- in the old school uspm speedy way. incredible vocals, ripping speed, and its good from start to end)

Rock Goddess- Rock Goddess (something about this record....standard nwobhm fair but there's a surprising variety in the songs emotional center- it's all love and sex but it encapsulates a lot more humanity than most- different kinds of passion, heartbreak, desperation. and it ROCKS)

Operation: Mindcrime- Queensryche (greatest of all time. thee concept album. nothing else to say)

Black Metal- Venom (venom, if you catch me on the right day, is probably my favorite band. i love first wave black metal- it sounds like shit, it's lost all the edge in the intervening years, and yet. and fucking yet. they threw together something special.)

Behind the Realms of Madness- Sacrilege (crusty thrashy goodness. i love everything sacrilege has done, including their doomier late career, but the energy on this is wild. beat out detente on this list so if you like them, youll like sacrilege)

Feel the Fire- Overkill (overkill, by the band overkill, is the best thrash song of all time. well. maybe not but it's fucking undeniable. this overkill has the best energy of any of their albums, even if the others are more well-known)

Darkness Decends- Dark Angel (metal that sounds like shit eats punk that sounds like shit for breakfast)

The Blueprints for Madness- Deceased... (one of my favorite old school death metal records, mostly for the strange grind touches. it could be shorter but damn.)

All Creatures Great and Eaten- Nuclear Death (stands toe-to-toe with mindcrime at the top of my list. strange and depraved in the best possible way. lori bravo is the best to ever do it)

Sagrada Tierra Del Jaguar- Yaotl Mictlan (the black metal/folk thing usually sucks bc the people making it are white pagan nazis and shit. but, globally, there's been some very cool indigenous bands who have incorporated precolonial music traditions in their black metal as a result. yaotl mictlan, a band with prehispanic themes and instrumentation, is prob my favorite of these bands, easily.)

Glory, Glory! Apathy Took Helm!- Vile Creature (idk why this made me cry but any doom/sludge capable of that deserves a spot on my favorites)

What other film versions of Hedda Gabler are worth watching?

GOD i'm trying to remember lmao....this truly would have been a better question for Me Age 17. it has literally been eight/nine years since i saw most of these but uhhhh:

-janet suzman, which i mentioned earlier—my favorite filmed version of hedda the character, iirc. she's smarter than everyone but also it's one of few performances where you buy that she's literally two seconds away from blowing her brains out at any given moment. considering those are hedda's two primary character traits, you'd think more actors could pull off this juxtaposition, but it's shockingly rare! not perfect—she is a little old for the role imo, and the costuming choices are weird as hell. but what can you do

-ingrid bergman—i remember liking her fine but remember liking this production's torturous (in the best way) hedda/tesman dynamic even more. unrelated but also i went years between seeing this and casablanca so whenever people would mention ingrid bergman i'd mentally be like "oh yeah. from hedda gabler" which in retrospect is so funny

-fiona shaw—what one might call an, uh, Inspired take! most heddas imo opt for "condescending" (at risk of forgetting suicidality) and fiona shaw opted for "suicidal" at risk of forgetting that hedda's actually also super condescending and awful. watching her is like watching a protracted nervous breakdown. it's probably worth a watch because it does get to the heart of the emotions in a way one rarely sees with ibsen but i would not call it, like, super faithful to the intent of the text

-diana rigg—i think this was the one we watched in high school on the days when my teacher was like "fuck it movie time". did not leave much of an impression on me tbh. all very mannered

there's some version from 2016 i never watched, idk if it's good. re: stage productions, there are clips of cate blanchett hedda floating around, and i'm sure it was great, but who knows if it was ever actually filmed in full. i have also heard good things about the ntlive hedda directed by ya boy ivo van hove/starring ruth wilson but still haven't watched it yet due to being a fake fan

tbh i actually do want to finish the series at some point but i kind of phased out of the fandom for a long while and then life got in between and so on. you know the spiel for sure, i got busy with school and other shit (also taking care of my mental health better which was a huge driving point in even writing the series). my life is still busy and i’m currently finding it easier to write silly block men fics instead of the… huge saga thingy that was faf lol.

but it also kind of made me infamous (?) on ao3?? like it’s popular?? and that completely baffles me??? my own little slice of internet fame is dark percy fic lmao. and reading it back really marks my progress as a writer and i can look back on so much stuff that happened during it with so much melancholy and pride… yk it’s kind of a retrospective of me 2021-ish. so because it’s so close to my heart, and for all the people still commenting and waiting on an update i do want to finish it at some point. i just have no idea when!

Daily WoF Designs - A Retrospective

Here we are! Three hundred thirty one designs, eleven months, and one very, very tired high schooler. I’m writing this at two am after finishing Freedom’s design and wow. Just. Wow.

In case you dont want to read all my sappy stuff and just want to know about the future of the blog- I WILL be posting new designs if any new characters are introduced in new books (the dragon guide, any future winglets, etc). I will also answer any asks. There just wont be any more designs for a while.

Onto the sappy stuff!

I got the idea of this while working on my Sirens animatic, because I thought to myself that a reference would be useful to have right about then. About a month later, I saw someone mention that one of those “drawing every warrior cats” blogs had finished (ive looked and cant find it anymore, but im sure I saw that post!). So, I got the idea in my head and wondered if this was a good idea because- really? four hundred designs? (in concept I was going to do the humans too. I decided against it partway through book 2)

So, who better to ask than my hashtag besties who I’ve known for years?

I immediately disregarded her, of course. But it’s the principle of the matter.

This was a project I started on the tail-end of quarantine, and it gave me something to do with myself once the school year started up and I went back to in person school for the first time since eighth grade. It was something to keep me grounded. I knew that if I had nothing to do, I could always knock out a few designs while listening to a video essay.

Even if theres some designs I’m not so proud of (looking at you, tsunami and deathbringer), I always enjoyed it. Trying to figure out how to make every character look interesting, how to go beyond “brown scales” or “black wings”. It helped me improve my character designing skills, that’s for sure. If I were to go back to some of my book one designs, I’d probably do things differently. But I know if I go back to redo book one, I’d end up redoing EVERY design. Best let sleeping dogs (or dragons!) lie.

Anyways, now that I’m here, I’d like to shout out followers (or just those who frequently interacted) that I noticed a lot. If I missed you, I’m very sorry- theres just SO many of you and I’d like to keep it short haha.

But anywho! This could be so cute with Bertie!

I think at first, Bertie would be very put off by someone so hopeful. Probably see it as naivety. Obviously they've had a cushy life and have yet to experience anything real to finally shatter their rose tinted glasses view of the world.

It's making me wonder about Bertie happening upon YN when YN doesn't realize anyone else is at the office, and they're having a bit of a breakdown....though this plot is now making me reminiscent of a Nanamin x YN fic I think...rory just posted a bit ago? But whatever,

Bertie happens upon them in this state of non joy and maybe they end up having a lil heart to heart--that he does NOT plan on having cause he has no idea how to comfort someone in this state. But maybe the next day, he ends up bringing them some kind of baked goods as a --cheer up kinda gesture, cause that's all he can think of. And they end up raving about his baking, which he thinks is a little overkill, but it actually makes him feel really damn good inside.

And then just them slowly building a rapport as time goes on and Bertie realizing that YN's sunny disposition isn't fake but isn't naivety either, it's them doing their best to try and look for the good meaningful things in life because they've had so many challenges in life.

And it's not a perspective that Bertl ends up adopting or anything. But. He does begin to crave seeing them happy and joyful. Hearing there laughter or seeing them smile brightens his own day. And sure, life still feels fairly pointless to him. But every day he ends up getting to see them that way becomes a day he retrospectively feels held some meaning.

You said you held back a lot on your rogue gallery comic recs, if you’re comfortable with it I would love to see the rest of the comics you enjoy pertaining to the Gotham rogues!

LMAO okay well for the record, I'll reiterate that this separate list is the rogues gallery comics I would wholeheartedly recommend with zero caveats. I'll add three more to this list, but I would recommend these issues as a taste test for them:

Detective Comics feat. Scarecrow #23.3, "City of Fear"

Detective Comics #566, "Know Your Foes"

And Batman (2016) #49, "Best Man Pt. 2"

If you liked City of Fear:

This issue is set in the ruins of a Batman-less Gotham, where Scarecrow is going around trying to convince the other villains to join him on a plan that really only he is excited about. It's the set-up for Forever Evil: Arkham War, a series where Scarecrow and the Arkhamites battle Bane for control over Gotham, with Penguin as a neutral intermediary who plays both sides. It references a lot of previous and current continuity, but back when I first read it I had zero context and honestly enjoyed it more for the inexplicability. (The city's turned into a post-apocalyptic wasteland? There's freeze dried assassins being stored in the sewers? Whatever. Sure. Gotham is just like that sometimes.) The storyline ends in Forever Evil Aftermath: Batman vs. Bane. If you want to know what Poison Ivy was up to behind the scenes, read Forever Evil: Rogues Rebellion #3. Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Zsasz, and Black Mask all have cameos in Rogues Rebellion #4.

If you liked Know Your Foes:

#566 one leads into a larger plot, but that plot is actually not the one I'm recommending here! The main appeal of this comic (other than the ever iconic cover) is that I find it fun to compare the rogues gallery of the 80's to the gallery now, and one of the best stories for that is the giant sized anniversary story "All My Enemies Against Me!" in Detective Comics #526. Neither of these issues have much going on plot wise, which is why I can't recommend either of them as highly as "Where Were You the Night Batman Died?", but they're a fun look at what Batman thinks of his villains and what they think of each other. Also, #526 ends with Talia and Selina literally riding off into the sunset together, which is always fun. I should probably also clarify that both of these issues feature original flavor Jason Todd, back when he was an orphaned circus acrobat with naturally ginger hair (he decided to dye it when first dressed up as Robin). Yes his only friend is a clown, yes the irony is retrospectively hilarious.

If you liked Best Man Pt. 2:

Tom King's writing is kind of like cilantro, in that some people love it and want it on everything (me) and some people are inherently repulsed by it (apparently most of Tumblr). This issue is mostly just Joker and Catwoman gossiping about Batman and the rest of his villains, and it's pretty much just a thesis statement for how Tom King views Batman's rogues gallery. If you liked his sense of humor and his meta-heavy approach to the obsession Gotham villains have with Batman, I'd heavily recommend "The War of Jokes and Riddles" (Batman #25-32), the Batman/Catwoman series, and probably his just-started Batman: Killing Time (based on the previews-- I haven't read it yet).

in retrospect my first relationship is so funny. it lasted ten days and was with a guy who was one of my besties who at the time i thought was a girl and we went to school together and they had a tumblr account and we followed each other and we sent each other posts and reblogged from each other and i thought he liked me anyway we went on ONE date at his place and then we got together over a long snapchat conversation (i was simultaneously having snapchat conversations with my other besties) and then just over a week later he broke up with me over snapchat text and in retrospect we were both terrible at communicating anyway we never actually kissed or even like. held hands so i don’t really count him as my first relationship. i pined after them unhealthily for like a year and then we graduated and he fucked off to melbourne and has never initiated contact with me again which made me like. sad in this insane way which i realise was probably heartbreak and i still miss him because above all else i thought we were best friends but they cut themself off from the entire friend group (i think due to complications with a toxic guy who had been introduced to the group and had a fling with two of my other besties) and i guess our friendship was a casualty. or maybe he just hated me. i don’t know. anyway gay people flock together in high school. our entire friend group has had some sort of romantic and or sexual relationship with one another at some point. anyway this is all to say that my other bestie who i’m currently kind of in love with who i have had a thing with in the past (except not really. it’s complicated) is driving me insane and no i’m not ever going to do anything about it because i do not want this friendship to implode lmao

4. First impression of each other? Was it love at first sight?

Yes. ROFLMAO.

No. For Felix, he thought Pierre was hot and intriguing. They were curious about this put together, sober looking fellow. Who handled themselves with authority --- and how that just MELTED into a flustered mess when Felix put up his charm.

Pierre was a flustered mess. That was his first impression. He was charmed and amused despite himself. I always say it WAS love at first sight for Pierre, like he fell right away. But it was early. It was more 'oh, who are you?' The way one notices the first ray of sunshine after several cloudy days. How can one NOT be struck? But not love at first sight, strictly.

5. Nicknames? Pet names? Any in-jokes?

Felix calls him babe. Mostly. Probably darling. Hon. Maybe even 'bae' when he finds out (which both makes Pierre roll his eyes and blush, because he's a grown man Felix). Pierre isn't the type to call Felix 'Fee' but I think once in a VERY blue moon, when Felix has him feeling some type of way, it'll slip out (and drive Felix inside).

Pierre isn't one for pet names, but he is alware enough to wield them wisely. 'Sunshine' likely gets used when he cant quite contain the affection or when they're in private. In-jokes are mostly Felix and Pierre being amused. I haven't pondered any but I feel Felix tries various out so they can have A Thing, which Pierre finds ridiculous and adorable. And he enjoys delighting Felix once in a while by riffing off of it. He hasn't created his own yet ... but he will. Felix's happiness will make it worth it.

39. - Who initiated the relationship? Who kissed who first?  When did they realize they were in love?

In canon, Felix is trying his fucking best. But he's being patient. When it happens, it will probably be Felix (unless we want to give Pierre credit for accepting Felix's attempts). I think Pierre will be the one to kiss first. I don't think either of them KNOW yet, but I think Felix is more certain, more secure about things than Pierre (insert obligatory Bobby fucked with my boy bad).

40. - Any special memories? Do they have a special place they like to go to?

Not really, in term of place. Felix just likes dragging his introvert OUT! And taking lots of pictures. So, pictures have started to litter Pierre's place .. and some to his work desk. That's special enough for him because he's realizing he -- didn't have much of that before. (Can't miss what you never realized you were missing out on.) Pierre likes occasionally taking Felix to do his hobbies with him, though he knows Felix tolerates them out of love.

Their favorite thing to do together though is quiet moments at Pierre's apartments. Pierre reads to him while Felix plays with the neighbor's cat that loves to stalk/harass/cuddle with Pierre (and now Felix).

45. Any special dreams or goals they have as a couple? Any heartbreaks? Regrets?

Pierre wants to take Felix traveling. LMAO. He wants to TRY to make museums fun for his boo, but he wants to show him different parts of the world, of humanity. Their slowburn is heartbreaking for them both 3erter book 3 and they're still not together. I think Pierre will regret it in retrospect, doubting FELIX of all the people. But he really wasnt ready yet. So it is smart that he waited, but it might foolishly feel like maybe if he had said yes sooner, they'd have more time together. (He wont indulge in such thoughts often -- or at least overtly)

Last ask, these are just scattered brain thoughts. Techno realising the brothers must be bored. Also poor Puffy has to deal with Techno stealing her guards for training. I love how ‘my sibling is telling a story to brag, but I know they are lying so I must make this known to embarrass them’ overrides ‘must be polite and well-behaved in front of the imperator’.

I feel like I should be paying more attention to which daggers they are choosing because there’s probably more symbolism there. But Wilbur picks a white one, which stands for purity and innocence and so on, which is interesting.

Slamming someone into a mat and threatening their life might not be the best way to prove that you are trustworthy Techno. Though it does prove the ‘could kill you within 10 seconds’, so why would he put in extra effort.

Tommy is more distraught than Wilbur because Wilbur is his entire support system and the person he’s relying on and he can’t lose him. He has been here before and has had nightmares about it. It also makes me wonder if it’s of them have processed that near-death experience.

Tommy laughing and then cutting himself off is either because I realised he was laughing with the imperator or because last time he was having fun Wilbur got mad at him because apparently having fun means you aren’t taking things seriously enough.

Lastly, Phil likes comparing Wilbur to a dog. First it’s saying how well trained he is. Now it’s literally calling him a kicked puppy.

sflkdsjf i love making the brothers bicker even in really important conversations like talking with the imperator. even though they're both royally trained princes, first and foremost, it's a 19 year old and his 15 year old brother. they bicker a lot. when tommy tries to brag, you bet your ass wilbur is gonna call him out.

lmao i answered this in a previous ask but the daggers had no symbolism. i did purposefully give wilbur a white dagger to contrast with tommy's black dagger, but that was more just a contrast thing instead of actual color symbolism. in retrospect i really wish i'd put more thought into it but i'm not gonna bullshit you and pretend i put symbolism there when i didn't lmao

fun fact i came up with the scene of techno slamming wilbur on the mat and threatening him as i wrote it, and i had to pause and read over it like 5 times to see if i wanted to keep it. i heavily debated cutting it entirely just bc i wasn't sure if it was wise to keep it in, but it was such a fun scene and really showed a lot of techno's character so i ultimately kept it in

tommy might act like a bratty little brother sometimes but he's really protective over wilbur. he lets wilbur take the lead on most things because he trusts him, but if he feels like wilbur's in danger he wouldn't hesitate to throw himself in front of his brother because he genuinely would have no clue what to do without him. the near death experience trauma is alive and well :)

oh yeah i wanna clarify tommy stopped laughing because he realized he was laughing with the imperator. it wasn't because he was afraid of wilbur being mad at him. when he saw wilbur staring at him, he realized oh what the fuck am I doing and cut himself off.
