So now that OBI-WAN KENOBI has premiered its first two episodes, a lot of us are right back in the screaming hell pit of feelings about Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker! And some of us never left. You know what might help with that? Some STAR WARS fic recs with a heavy focus on these two idiots that are dead set on breaking our hearts (along with all our other prequels-centric faves), because I’m not going to be crying in the club alone. If you want more recs, you can check out the fic recs tag where there’s a whole bunch more of them or you can check out some themed sets that are relevant, like Obi-Wan + Darth Vader or Obi-Wan Kenobi epic fics. Or if you want your heart to be healed, have some Force Ghosts recs. But if you want some recent recs, this fandom is really wonderful and I want to shove a bunch of them at you because they scratch the itch so well! Year-End Fic Recs 2022 - part 1

Every year, my fellow fanfic writers blow me away with their talent, their creativity, and their heart. I’m compiling a list to share a few of the fics I read (or reread) this year and would recommend -- by no means an exhaustive list of the many talented writers and wonderful stories, and not exclusively stories that came out or updated this year, but a place to start. Because I have a lot to say, I’ll be sharing these in multiple posts.

Fic Recs Part I: Leia Organa Has Become Unstuck in Time

One of my favorite tropes, I’m learning, is “Leia travels to the past -- either on purpose or by accident -- and tries her damnedest to fix things, while the people she meets inevitably fall in love with her and try to get her to let others take care of her for a change / make her take care of herself for at least ten minutes. With varying amounts of success.”

Of Queens, Knights, and Pawns by @chancecraz: TFA-era Leia Organa goes to sleep the night of Han’s death and wakes up in her 19-year-old body, just as 19-year-old Leia is being transported to the Death Star from the Tantive IV. *Stefon voice* This fic has everything: time travel, angst, humor, romance, Force shenanigans, unlikely friendships and surprising allies, scary parents, political intrigue, BAMF Leia Organa, ride-or-die Han Solo falling in love with Leia all over again, Bail and Breha Organa being awesome (and alive!), Luke educating others on Tatooine culture, Leia and Obi-Wan getting drunk together, dreamscape discussions between Leia and Vader, discussions of the clones and the Jedi, considerations of the fall of the Republic and the neglect of the Outer Rim, droids that make me cry, and just beautiful, complex writing throughout. It is a bit of a commitment (each chapter is often novella length or longer), has a fair amount of angst, and does include a timeline in which at least the TFA part of the sequels happened, but it’s well worth it.

The Don’t Look Back series (Like Fire in Our Bones, Blood of Our Father, and Duty Bound are the primary stories) by @this-acuteneurosis: Not long after ROTJ, Leia is grieving, having just lost Han, Luke, Chewie, and the droids while they were on a mission for the New Republic. Anakin Skywalker’s Force Ghost offers Leia a chance to go back in time to the person who could help her fix it all: a pre-AOTC Shmi Skywalker. When Leia and Shmi reconnect with Padmé on their way to Coruscant, they become part of refugee resettlement, political intrigue, Jedi business, clone rights, and much more. Includes some wonderful relationship-building with Obi-Wan and Anakin, Leia learning to deal with her power in the Force, Leia dealing with grief (or refusing to deal with grief, as the case may be), Leia trying to wend her way past Palpatine’s machinations, Threepio being important to the plot, some surprise help from Force Ghosts, Anakin getting some much-needed support, and Leia sassing a Sith Lord. Oh, and at some point you may find yourself shipping Leia and Obi-Wan (the OWK series is not canon in this story, just FYI). If you love Shmi or Padmé and the handmaidens, you will especially enjoy this series. The most recent fic, Duty Bound, is currently updating on a regular basis, but you should start from the beginning.

Shifting Sands by @chancecraz: TFA-era Leia is exploring a Force cave with Luke and ends up thrown back into TPM-era Mos Espa, where she meets Anakin and Shmi Skywalker prior to Padmé and Qui-Gon’s arrival. Told from different characters’ points of view, we see how Leia’s intervention with the two people she calls Old Man and Grandmother alters the prequel timeline and begins to change the Jedi’s approach to Anakin, their approach to the reemergence of the Sith, and Leia’s relationship with her own Force powers. Features wonderful characterization and perspectives from Mace Windu, Padmé Amidala, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and (coming up in the next chapter) Shmi Skywalker herself.

Fox and Leia’s Holiday Special by @yellowocaballero: This is a Tumblr-only fic that plays off another time-travel story by this author, Twilight on Owl Creek Bridge (which involves Clone Commander Fox and Leia connecting across time as Leia tries to avert her future and appears as a ghost in Fox’s present; also, Fox keeps waking up in the fountains in the Jedi Temple). In the Holiday Special, Leia is in prequel times and has managed to free Fox’s mind from Palpatine’s Dark Side programming and enlist him in her plot to assassinate his boss and prevent the rise of the Empire and the slaughter of the Jedi. But the recent changes in Fox -- including the fact that he is regularly seen willingly and happily interacting with a natborn Senator -- have not gone unnoticed by his clone brothers, who jump to some conclusions about his and Leia’s relationship. I love this little fic; it’s funny, tender, and has some wonderful things to say about how important a deep, platonic relationship can be, and how it can transform someone’s life. Also the power of office gossip to really throw things off.

Shades in the desert by loosinetters

Not even from a certain point of view did Darth Vader kill Anakin Skywalker. He wished he did, but the specter of the Jedi’s light escaped before he could finalize his fall to the dark. Meanwhile, Anakin is raising his son on Tatooine.

It would be easier if: 1) he weren’t a Force ghost nobody but his toddler could see and 2) Obi-Wan would stick around so somebody could teach Luke about the Force.

All Ahsoka (either of them) wanted in life was to make it all better. Sometimes, especially when a Force Avatar can bend the rules, wishes can be pushed through. Maybe.

Occasionally, some go rogue. There are stories of clones blowing up entire Star Destroyers for the Generals they killed themselves, stories of them awaiting execution and spitting curses at the officers for depriving the Galaxy of what should've become peace, stories of quiet, sobbed apologies in their sleep directed at the long-dead Jedi. FFFX Recs

Five Figure Fanwork Exchange (fffx ) produced a bumper crop of fic this year! And I am sliding in with my recs at the last minute before they de-anonymize, because I ahve been tired and worn and have had very little brain space for reading anything but old favorites in the last several weeks. I highly encourage you to go read through the collection, because my recs are affected by the fact that I was not able to read as many as I would have otherwise done. (The less mental energy I have, the less widely I read.)

I recieved an absolutely AMAZING fic in the Moon Knight fandom. This was absolutely delightful. I particularly loved the way it took my expectations and turned them upside down.

Oh, thank you for this! Unsurprisingly my favourite fics I've written are mostly fix-it AUs from fandoms I love but where canon disappointed me.

Red Five (Star Wars) - Conceived as a one-shot after TFA, back when we were all full of hope for the sequel trilogy, that grew into a 200k epic of Skywalker family drama. With the EU nixed, I wondered what if Mara Jade could be repurposed into the new canon in some other way, and when the cast photo for Rogue One was released she took form as Valara. This fic was very much a labour of love, written during a very fraught time for me personally (hence all the angst), and in which I attempted to include as many elements of the (pre-TLJ) canon as possible, to try and make sense of the Luke and Rey we were presented in TFA and how they ended up where they did. This is an unabashed Luke/OC, Rey Skywalker fic and I remain very proud of it.

A Life Less Ordinary (Robin Hood) - I've written several Marian lives fics for this fandom, but this is my favourite (and I think the best). It is the truest representation of how I see the show and characters, in particular the Robin and Marian dynamic and the challenges their relationship would face, as well as fixing some of my personal bugbears - bringing back Eve and Carter, Marian coming into her own, dealing with the fallout of season two for all of the characters to get them to a place I feel they deserved. This is very much my personal headcanon for the show where season three simply does not exist.

Against the Dying of the Light (Merlin) - Not so much an AU but definitely a fix it - exploring Gwen as Queen of Camelot following the end of the show, Merlin as her right hand as she navigates her rule and pregnancy, with frequent flashbacks to her time with Arthur. This was a show that had so many missed opportunities including the sidelining of Gwen (and the Gwen/Merlin friendship) as well as great supporting characters like Elena, Annis, and Mithian so this was definitely something I tried to rectify and build Gwen a female power base, as well as explore both her and Merlin's grief and inject some hope back into a show that had a very grim ending that I didn't feel was earned.

Turn Your Face to the Sun (Star Wars) - My take on Obi-Wan's time on Tatooine, written in journal format as he pens missives to Qui-Gon and watches over Luke. Obi-Wan is a character I have a huge affinity for, particularly in this time period and his dynamic with Owen and Beru and little Luke that doesn't seem to get a lot of attention in fandom (or it seems in canon either). It is unfinished as yet, but I am very attached to this fic and am rather proud of (imo) capturing Obi-Wan's voice, since first person is not usually a pov I write in.

It's hard to choose this last one! I guess maybe I would go with another wip Twin Hearts of Kyber, an AU in which Leia is able to make it to Tatooine to meet Obi-Wan, and the twins are told of their connection and Force sensitivity from the start. I just love exploring the possibilities of this - Obi-Wan as mentor to both twins, Owen and Beru surviving, Luke meeting Bail and Breha, and how this would change how events unfold. I do intend to finish this at some stage!

I love senate rarepairs such as those. Especially since they're triads. I'll admit that I only know Riyo through fanart and fic, but she looks pretty and is possibly a good ally for Padmé? 👀 The truth is that I haven't seen TCW and haven't made it a priority. 😅

I've read a bit of Bail/Obi/Breha. There's a NSFW CodyWan fic that features them that broke my heart so I highly recommend it: Government Hooker by EwanMcGregorIsMyHomeboy12.

I will say that I actually personally am more interested in Padmé with Bail and Breha as I've been working on a slow-burn romance for them... Obi-Wan is good with almost anyone, I think. I could be convinced of any ship with him.

(Even More) Star Wars Fic Recs

Hello everyone, happy Monday! I've been reading some fantastic fics recently and wanted to share them with you. May 4th was an absolutely glorious day to be a Star Wars fanfic reader, but the downside to having so many great stories posted on way day is that it's super easy to miss some, so I tried to highlight some here, as well as the usual random assortment.

Alternating Current by @jessepinwheel (gen, WIP, 1/3 chapters, 5.7k words) I am subscribed to @jessepinwheel's AO3 account, that's how much I love all of their writing, and this is just their latest masterpiece. The premise is that after Naboo, Obi-Wan starts experiencing some strange things, almost as if there's someone else in his body. But it doesn't feel like a foreign presence in his mind... And, well, the presence calls themselves Ben. I'm so, so intrigued to see what happens next in this story.

See, I'm the Living Icarus by @crispyjenkins (Rex/Obi-Wan, WIP, 2/6 chapters, 7.0k words) Role-reversal with Obi-Wan as Anakin's Padawan post-Melida/Daan fighting in the Clone Wars alongside Rex. Yeah, that's what I thought -- you're hooked, right? I was too. And then I read the first two chapters and wowwwww, just got even more obsessed. It's all just *chef's kiss*. Cannot wait to read more.

Off Duty by thosenearandfarwars (Obi-Wan/Cody, one-shot, 4.4k words) A post-ROTS world in which the Jedi were not destroyed, the clones are given reparations, and Obi-Wan throws his whole self into reforming the Jedi Order. It's from Cody's POV as he tries to stop his (former?) General from running himself into the ground. Featuring Jedi culture, positive change, some fun namedrops (Chirrut?!), and CODYWAN! Highly recommend this fic.

Starting Over by @ewanmcgregorismyhomeboy12 (Obi-Wan/Cody, one-shot, 3.8k words) Speaking of amazing ideal post-ROTS AUs with Codywan, here's another! This one is described in the tags as being soft and domestic, and it totally is. Cody + plants + Obi-Wan = delight. Such a pleasure to read. Makes you feel all cozy inside.

Finders Keepers by SpaceWall (Obi-Wan/Cody + a ton of background ships, 2/2 chapters, 8.4k words) This fic is a soulmate AU that follows the premise that everything you lose, your soulmate ends up finding. It really does an excellent job of exploring this fascinating premise, and using it in ways I wouldn't have thought of. Like, something happens with Anakin that is just so beautiful yet haunting, I just... Ah! The main ship here is Codywan, but there are so many great background ships like Aayla and Bly or Anakin and Padmé, and some that are super interesting, like Satine and Rex, or Fox and Bail and Breha Organa. Fascinating stuff!

Benediction by @misskirby (gen, one-shot, 3.3k words, Obi-Wan & Anakin) Each new fic by @misskirby destroys me, and this one is no different except it's destroying me with HAPPY THINGS and POSITIVE EMOTIONS for once. My heart hurts just thinking about it, not because it makes me sad, but just in a... ahhh I don't know, the emotions, okay?! Obi-Wan is watching the twins with Anakin in a ROTS-didn't-happen AU and they actually TALK? With their words? And express positive feelings towards each other without being put in horrible situations? Like I said, AU 😂. This is so, so good. (This fic was not posted on May 4th, but @misskirby did post Stride for Stride on that day, which is an excellent fic about Obi-Wan and Anakin sparring for Ahsoka that you all also must read.)

still much that is fair by RaineyDay (gen, 8/8 chapters, 21.1k words, Obi-Wan & Anakin) Massive trigger warning right off the bat for this one, because it starts off with Padawan Obi-Wan trying to commit suicide by throwing himself off of the Temple roof, except instead of dying, he ends up getting caught by -- Anakin?! Somehow he ends up in the future to find out that he's loved, and a good Jedi. Back in his own timeline, Qui-Gon thinks his Padawan has just succeeded in killing himself, and is distraught and has to reckon with their relationship. Don't worry, it has a happy ending! Give Obi-Wan a hug 2k21!

trouble with the curve by jimmytiberius (Cody/Obi-Wan, one-shot, 2.4k words) Modern day baseball AU! Cody is the analytics guy whose job it is to watch Kenobi and how people hit off of him, and Rex is Obi-Wan's normal bullpen catcher. Problem is, Rex is a little hungover, so Cody has to secretly take his brother's place and hope no one notices. Sparks fly!! You guys, this fic is awesome. You don't need to know anything about baseball to read it, though if you do it adds another delightful dimension. Highly recommend! I smile just thinking about this fic!

Lasting Marks by kyitsya (gen, 10/10 chapters, 25.8k words, Obi-Wan & Rex) I reread this fic the other day and it was just as emotionally devastating the second or third time around. It follows Obi-Wan and Rex in the Zygerria arc, except they're trapped in the mines for weeks and things really take a toll. Obi-Wan and Rex's relationship is not one that's explored much in canon, so it's really cool to see a bond form here. I also really like the later subplot with Ahsoka.

Got Me in a Tricky Situation by @dharmaavocado (pre Rex/Obi-Wan, one-shot, 5.2k words) Rex and Obi-Wan are trapped together underneath a collapsed building and they have to literally and metaphorically hold onto each other for support. I absolutely love the descriptions in this one, they're killer (almost literally haha). Some great good ol' fashioned whump. Love it!

A Long Way Down by @kckenobi (gen, one-shot, 3.8k words, Obi-Wan & Anakin) @kckenobi writes truly wonderful fics, but I gotta say I think this is my favorite. Obi-Wan and Anakin are trying to escape Separatists by climbing up a cliff face, but Obi-Wan's injured and he's really struggling to hold on... Oh, everything about this is perfect: the characterizations, the descriptions, the dialogue, everything! I reread this one all the time.

I was really excited to post this set of STAR WARS recs because it contained some of my favorite fics of recent times and there are some fics in the fandom that are SO INCREDIBLY GOOD, it’s a marvel to me that every time I feel like things are slowing down, I remember there’s this other fic that makes me want to yell at the top of my lungs to fandom about how much I loved it and then there’s that other one, too! It’s the best kind of problem to have, to feel like there’s so much fic I want to yell about and how satisfying some of them can be! That this post got so long because I just had so much I wanted to flail about! People hate Russingon because it’s ubiquitous and overshadows all other content with either of them.

So I sat on this for a while, because I wanted to think about it, and to consider whether or not I agreed with it. I don’t want to dismiss frustration with something’s ubiquity as homophobia or sexism or something it isn’t. And, having sat on it for a while? I’m unconvinced that “popularity” is a valid reason to publicly talk about why you hate something, at least in a way that aligns you with homophobes, unless those discussions are untagged or privately tagged to keep them out of public spaces.

I dabble in other fandoms sometimes, though I’ll never be as passionate about anything else as I will about Tolkien (and I don’t have scholarly inclinations for any other nerd property, either) and I know what it’s like to like something that isn’t popular - I’m a Bail Organa/Breha Organa shipper, and my interest in Star Wars is reserved pretty exclusively for House Organa, and I don’t ship Bail with Obi-Wan even as part of a throuple/triad with Breha. I’m left with like sixty fics on AO3 that are about their relationship, handfuls of dialogue in now-noncanonical EU books, and a smattering of graphics and fanworks. When you add to that the fact that I can’t stand the new canon for Alderaan as introduced in Leia, Princess of Alderaan? I completely understand hating something because it’s ubiquitous. I get it. I’m actively resentful of Disney Wars for what it did, which was kill a lot of my interest in a franchise I really liked.

But I don’t publicly talk about that. I don’t harass Bail/Obi-Wan shippers, or talk about how Bail/Obi-Wan is everywhere so I can’t find content I like. I don’t make sweeping statements about how Bail Organa Is Not Gay (I mean, he’s not, he’s bisexual, but that’s beside the point) or how Obi-Wan and Bail make such good friends and how can people ship them?! I also don’t post on my blog about how I’m dying for good fic recs that don’t include gay content or include Bail/Obi-Wan.

That’s rude, and it’s also putting me in a position where I could really offend somebody, and if I did any of that I stop being justified in my feelings and I become an asshole. If people are frustrated by Russingon’s ubiquity, Tumblr’s native tag filtering and xKit blacklist and the block button are easy solutions, I think? It’s a big reason why I tag all my reblogs and original posts with ‘Russingon’ and I’m up-front in my blog description about what I ship - if people don’t want to see it, I support them filtering that out, you know? (And if you’ll notice, a lot of the “I don’t ship it but - ” arguments are basically indistinguishable from the “I’m a homophobe” arguments, which is also frustrating. I’ve got no real way of knowing how somebody actually feels, and in many cases the public claim is that it’s not about homophobia but the argument itself hits all the same beats.)

Also if I’m being honest I’m not quite sure what’s being overshadowed by Russingon, unless the complaint is that there’s just not gen content for those characters in general, and even then I’m ??? Plenty of art is either ambiguous in whether it’s platonic or romantic, and solo pieces of either Finno or Mai are pretty common too, and there’s lots of Finwëan family art that focuses on other kinds of relationships and ties. There’s decent amounts of genfic about the Silm characters (and I LOVE genfic and I’m really excited that we have projects like @tolkiengenweek that are solely gen-focused), or fic that prioritizes other plots and elements besides their romantic relationship, or fic that presents their romance as part of a larger story with other characters that matter.

And ultimately even genfic is going to have to be on some level about their deep bond, even if it’s not romantic? That’s the defining piece of a lot of their characterization. They’re ridiculously important to one another, even if the reader interprets that as friendship rather than romance, and any genfic that doesn’t include that, or that presents them as something else than The Most Important Person In Each Other’s Lives? It’s just gonna feel inauthentic, at least to me. If there’s good non-romantic out there, I’ll read it, as long as it preserves their relationship on some level.

If there’s evidence of Russingon shippers harassing non-shippers, or shit-talking their content, or telling people to write romance instead, please tell me, because I do want to speak out against that if it’s happening. Ship and let ship is a good mantra to live by no matter what and it’s not cool to start ship wars.

I do have a lot of Vader fanfic recs! Most of these are Luke & Vader because I am a sucker for the Sunshine Son and Nightmare Dad. And also canon-divergence because canon is so sad R2D2 play despacito. Otherwise... In general I’d avoid the stories that are heavy on the Imperial politics because those are confusing af. Snowflake Challenge Days 6 & 7

(Catching up crossposting from Dreamwidth. I’m listing Day 7 first because it’s shorter.)

Challenge #7: In your own space, create your own challenge. I usually say some variation of "be kind" but a significant number of people are saying that this year (for pretty obvious reasons!), so I want to say something else. So: Remember why you love what you love and focus on it. You don't have to share it or anything. Simply let yourself love it.

Challenge #6: In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

(I did this ahead of time so I could copy/paste from my document because I knew it would pop up sooner or later. So glad I did because classes started today [Monday] and my free time is pretty much gone now.) This was really hard for me to do because it sometimes seems like I don’t remember most of what I read last year. Part of that I can blame on grad school, when my fic reading time went down to “whatever I can read during lunch and dinner” (it could take me two weeks to read what I’d normally read in an evening). Part of it is, well, I’ll blame 2020 in general. So this is a hodgepodge of some of the Star Wars fic I enjoyed rather than anything comprehensive.

After Order 66, all Jedi survivors are rounded up and forced into medical experimentation to destroy their Force sensitivity. Caleb Dume is no exception. Rated Mature for Graphic Depictions of Violence. 3700 words. This is absolutely brutal, managed to work in pretty much all of my requested tags for Darkest Night, and I love it. [For those who don’t know, Darkest Night is a darkfic exchange.] 6. Conviction by SassySnowperson. Obi-Wan Kenobi is accused of killing Chancellor Palpatine. The galaxy is hunting him. So why did Bail decide to hide him in Breha's private medical suite? "Breha," Bail pleaded. "If nothing else, we owe him.”. Bail/Breha/Obi-Wan. Rated Teens with no warnings. 10,300 words. I can’t get enough of this triad. 7. Eclipse by SpellCleaver. Luke and Leia, the twin children of Darth Vader and heirs to the Emperor himself, defect. When they do, it's naturally a dream come true for the Rebellion and the mother they never knew, one that's been a long time in the making. But they have to get to that point first. Or: Darth Vader unwittingly sends his children down the merry path of treason... and the ugly, painful fallout. Rated Mature for Graphic Depictions of Violence. 260,000 words. Luke and Leia, raised by Vader to be Imperials, and still completely in character, down to their defection. Also, Padmé lives. 8. it snows on jakku at midnight by nightdotlight. Heat from the engines of their ship melts the snow around them when they land planet side, not far from the Temple. Even so, Rey immediately clutches at her arms upon leaving its confines, despite the heavy coat she wears, and Mace knows that by the time they return, their transport will be snowed half under. Ilum’s wind bites at his face. He braces. He wonders. Rated General with no warnings. 2500 words. Time-travelling Rey apprenticed to Mace Windu. What’s not to love?

9. Broken Pieces, Lonely Places by PaperCraneCastles. Cal Kestis finds himself alone and running for his life, having caught the attention of the terrifying Sith Lord Darth Vader. As he runs, he remembers his life before Eno Cordova, before BD-1 and the Mantis and the holocron, and wonders how a failed Padawan turned scrap rat scurrying across Bracca became the Empire's Most Wanted. Rated Teens with no archive warnings. 27,000 words so far. Post-game frame story with the non-frame sections set between Order 66 and the start of the game. 10. Shine So Bright by Okadiah. When Kasmir is captured as a slave by the Pyke Syndicate, he is less than enthused. But, no worries. Nothing’s going to keep him from busting out of the mine he’s been sentenced to, contacting Kleeve, and getting the kriff out of there.But damn his bleeding heart because he wasn’t expecting to find the baby Jedi there either, clearly in need of some help of his own. And he definitely wasn’t expecting to run into the kid’s master either, just as in need but not at all as he remembered. Unfortunately, between them, the ambitious, sadistic warden running the mines, and a Jedi Hunter on the way, getting out might be tougher than he’d hoped. Way tougher. Rated Teens with no archive warnings. One chapter so far. Depa Billaba lives AU! 11. The Weeds in the Wilderness by Ealcynn. A man wakes on a cold and desolate moor. He knows he is hurt. He knows he is alone. What he doesn't know is what he is, or where he came from. He doesn't know even his own name.
