20 Most Anticipated K dramas to watch in 2024

Without a single doubt 2023 has been a prosperous year for us Kdrama fans. Starting from Crash Course in Romance in January 2023 to Gyeongseong Creature in December, the entire year of 2023 has brought us several unique stories, fantastic plots, sometimes sad endings and sometimes fairly-tale like “happily ever after”.

Even though there were a fair amount of Korean Dramas that were disappointing in 2023, but trust me when I say it, 2024 is certainly not going to disappoint you at all. Even when 2023 has delivered back to back hits like The Glory 2, Good Bad Mother, Moving and many more, 2024 stores sequels to hit kdramas along with some fresh new stories ready to blow us kdrama fans out of our minds.

So, without wasting any more time, let’s get into the list.

1. Squid Game 2

Genre: Thriller, action, mystery

Squid Game redefined the place of Korean Dramas in the global entertainment industry. This drama became the first non-English act to win six Emmy awards as well as gained the title of the most watched Netflix series ever. And to level up the death game even more, Squid Game season 2 is all set to be released in October 2024.

This season promises Eight additional cast members, making the anticipation even more exciting. So, are you ready to witness this intense gory thriller in 2024 or not?

2. Marry My Husband

Release date: 1st January

Genre: Drama, Romance, Fantasy

This fantasy romance then takes us 10 years back before Kang Ji Won was even married. While she gets to choose a new life for herself, we get to enjoy this star studded drama full of angst and romance.

3. Aema

Expected release date: Yet to be confirmed

Genre: Comedy, drama

Next in the list is the comedy drama Aema, which is all set to feature Lee Ha-Nee, Bang Hyo-Rin, Jin Sun-Kyu, and Cho Hyun-Chul as the main cast. The backdrop of the drama is set in the 1980 as it tells the story of Jung Hee Ran a top actress, who is casted as the protagonist of a movie titled “Madame Aema”.

This drama will certainly be a fun watch with an intriguing plot. Thus, don’t forget to add it to your list of K dramas to watch.

4. Everything will Come true

Expected release date: Not confirmed yet

Genre: Fantasy, romance, drama

Who didn’t like Uncontrollably Fond aka one of the saddest k dramas to watch? Only recalling the amazing chemistry between Shin Joon Young (Kim Woo Bin) and No Eul (Bae Suzy), makes us want to scream and cry for the couple. But don’t worry, Woo Bin and Suzy’s upcoming Korean drama Everything will come true will have a much lighter tone with a sprinkle of fantasy to it.

Woo Bin here plays the role of an emotional genie who meets Ga Young (Bae Suzy) and promises to grant her three wishes. But everything that’s free often comes at a price. However, we hope it’s not a broken relationship this time.

5. The Trunk

Genre: Romance, melodrama, mystery

Gong Yoo is returning with romance and melodrama and it won’t be in your watchlist? How is that even possible! The Trunk is certainly one of the most anticipated k dramas to watch in 2024, not only because it’s Gong Yoo and Son Ye Jin casted as the main lead, but also because this drama is an adaptation of 2022 novel The Trunk by C.M. Castillo.

The intriguing plot of this drama takes us inside the life of No In Ji, the head of a fixed-term marriage agency and Han Jung Won, a music producer. Both of them despise the idea of getting married but eventually fall in love as the drama progresses. Interesting.. Isn’t it?

Maxx: (As It's known Maxx is half vampire, which means just like Matt he can turn into a bat.)

I headcannon Maxx as more of a fruit bat, just from the way he acts and how docile Maxx is. Though because he is a vampire he needs the supplement "Red" to survive or just to make sure his blood sugar doesn't drop. Though these type of bats still eat flesh(Bugs & Mice) so yes sometimes Maxx will be caught eating the usual annoying house fly or spider. Once Amanda found Maxx eating a whole mouse he found outside when he was little.

Usually during spooky month is when Maxx and Matt go out in their bat forms. Maxx teaches anxiety how to hunt Mice and maybe the occasional human to drink blood from. Maxx honestly finds this activity fun and a Great bonding experience. Also during this month Maxx likes to go tricker treating and loves to go all put on his Vampire costume, both his parents find it very sweet that he finds fun in his Vampire qualities.

Along with Maxx being a Vampire, comes the creepy bits. He can smell people's blood, not only that but the type of blood they have. scents(When he first told Malcom this it freaked him the hell out, as out of nowhere Maxx went "Your blood type is O-, i can tell feom the smell." and Malcom just stared at him in horror and confusion. ). Maxx's favorite blood type is B- .

Ethan:

Nothing really creepy out him, except for his radioactive powers maybe.

He likes to go invisible on Holloween to pank his friends and random trick or treaters.

Ethan practiced witchcraft.

His mother showed him her Ouija board from when she was a teen and he was hooked. He lovesd the practice of black, it's been a weird interest of his to be able to curse and bless. To be able to contact the dead was something so cool to him. He once tried to summon something out of a pentagram once, but was quickly stopped by Roxxi and told his interest was going a little far and was never aloud to do it again.

Theo:

When he gets put of controll in his monster form he can become very reckless, though he never remembers what he does when he gets like that.

He once at a cat in his monster form. He never told anyone, especially Ethan. He didn't even know of it was a cat he just knows after one freak out he was coughing up animal hair for a week.

He can grow his limbs back, so can Tom. If one of their limbs gets hurt or damaged they can quickly grow it back or heal it. This also can happen in their human form...

He can also regulate his size from 10 c.m to 10Ft.

Tobi:

Man's father turned into a zombie. He got all them tendencies.

Yes, Tobi has bitten people before, he's even taken a couple chunks of flesh out of em' this typically only happens when something triggers his zombie part such as starvation which can happen with his body if he doesn't eat every 2-3 hours.

Unbeknownst to him his body can and will digest human flesh and bone. Gross...Along with this comes the ability to move his appendages when removed for a short period of time as he isn't fully zombie. When tord got his arm cut off after "The End" he was able to move it around for a short white before the arm started to lose contact with the brain like any arm would do when cut off form the body. Tobi experienced this once as well when he's older(this is a different headcannon) his finger gets cut off in a mechanical accident and he was able to move it around and detach it from the machine and get it suede back on.

Extra:

Anyas Halloween form or monster thing would be a werewolf, tell me I'm wrong >:^.

Susan would be a mummy.

Amanda would be a skeleton or part skeleton.

Roxix would be a Witch.

The extras are very correct, the only thing wrong is that Maxx does get blood from a hospital.

It's less about blood sugar and more that his body can't make the plasma that exists in healthy blood, on top of being born weak. So he would get blood transfusions to make up for it, but he freaks out about needles, so he will drink straight from the bag.

Creepy crawlies also freak him out, he's fine with spiders, he just can't touch them.

Also Amanda would have more of a Bride of Dracula situation XD

Imagine:

Dean and Sam are on there way to the bar where you had to been drinking, but find something dark on the way..then a few months later, they never expected this.

Sam's Pov-

It was about 10 at night, Dean was driving the Impala to go get Y/n who was drinking at the Beach house bar. She called us to come get her, everything was packed including her stuff. We decided to pack everything up, then go home after picking her up.

On the way there we spot flashing lights down by the beach, which was maybe a mile away from the bar. They weren't ambulance or police lights, more like flash lights. A huge crowd was surrounding something, more like someone. My heart started pounding as I saw the dead body, I couldn't tell who it was but I had a feeling I knew who it was.

"Huh I wonder what's goin there." Dean mutters.

"Pull over." I tell him, and when the Impala comes to a stop I run down to the crowd with Dean on my tail. I start pushing people out of the way to see who it was, and my heart stopped as I saw the long/short H/c in the sand. It was Y/n..multiple stab wounds to the chest and her clothes were ripped off. There were even some burn marks on her skin from cigars. Dean rushes over and begins calling her name "Y/n!? Y/n! No no no.." Sobbing he gathers her up in his arms, muttering her name over and over.

I didn't know how to feel about this...I stood there steams of tears goin down my cheeks. The love of my life....is gone, I step closer to Dean and see her blood covered phone which had a message that was being typed to us.

Dear boys,

I'm not gonna last long but my killer is C.M and I just want you to know that I lo

And that was it, she never finished it. I looked over to Dean and handed him the phone, he let go of her and read the message. I picked her up bridal style and whispered over and over that it was gonna be ok. That she wasn't gonna die, however I knew deep down that she was already gone...

10 months later...

It's been ten months and just the thought of her name makes me cry. Anything that reminds me of her makes me angry, we still haven't found what C.M means. I asked Cas if it was possible to go through her mind but he said it wasn't because her soul was gone. That includes her memories, I lied there in my bed every night wishing she was there. Laying next to me as I hold her close but she wasn't...she was never coming back...

Y/n's Pov-

I opened my eyes to see nothing but darkness. I ran my hands around my surroundings, I was in some kind of box, I desperately pushed the top to try and get it opened but I couldn't. Where am I? Did that man bury me alive? Why does the box smell like death? I look around the box but it was to dark to see anything. However I felt something in my back pocket. I reached to get it, it was square...My phone! I clicked the button and the bright light shined in my eyes.

"Jesus that's bright..." I muttered, it only had five percent left. Shit, I thought, one call that's all I need. I quickly dialed Sam's number and placed it next to my ear. It rang a few times, "C'mon answer...I'm dying here."

"Hello?..." A gruff voice asked, he seemed tired.

"Sammy! Uh I'm kinda trapped in a box and I only have like 5 percent left so if you could like track my phone-"

"Y/n?.."

"Yea it's me, I need help man."

"No I don't believe you. Y/n died 10 months ago."

"I-I died?...I thought the guy buried me alive."

"If it's really you, then who was your killer?"

"C.M, his actually name is Carlton Mathews, you know the rich boy in town?"

"Oh my god...Y/n j-just hold on ok! Dean! We'll be there in an hour."

"Wait-" Before I could say anything else my phone died. "Fuck..." Ok so what now? I thought, I could try to get out of this box. Possibly die again of suffocation, just do it like that woman from Kill Bill. I placed the tip of my hand on the wood, took a deep breath in the punched the wood. "Son of a bitch that hurts..." I did it again, my knuckles burning like hell now, however it is a good thing because the wood cracked open a little bit. Ok a few more, I did it harder this time and dirt fell on my face, making the smell worse. I sit up and push my way threw the dirt, it felt like bricks were pushing me down. I gasped for breath as I hit the surface.

"Holy crap...uh Cass? Come help? Hopefully you can come to my aid?" All of a sudden the angel appeared.

"Y/n! It worked!" He grabbed me by the arm and pulled me up out of the ground.

"W-What worked now?"

"I'll explain later, let's get you back to the Bunker." He placed two fingers on my forehead and all of a sudden we appeared back in to Bunker by the metal stairs. I looked down and I was covered in dirt, worms, and blood. When I looked up, I spotted the two brothers with there bags packed and shovels in there hands. Eyes widened with tears falling down there face.

"Oh hey...miss me boys?"

It’s one day when Zelie goes to the market to get more money to cover this tax that a desperate girl grabs her and begs for her protection. From that moment, Zelie’s life will take a turn. Now, tasked with the overwhelming responsibility of bringing magic back to the world, Zelie and her friends will go on a dangerous adventure to undo that damage that was done so long ago.

This book has only done one thing for me and that’s to remind me why I stopped reading YA books. Pretty much everything I don’t like about most YA books is condensed into this one story and notched up to eleven. I struggled so much to just fight and get through this. I practically had to force myself to pick up this book and read more than ten pages at a time because I wasn’t enjoying it at all.

It’s been a while since I’ve given a book an F, which means it’s back to the bullet point review style since I refuse to write a paragraph for every single one of these issues.

1. The writing is so bland, especially when you consider that this is a fantasy novel. I expected so much more. More characterization, more world building, more rules to the magic system, more detail in general. The writing is the source of all of my problems. It’s the main hub and everything I mention after this just spirals from it.

2. These are cookie-cutter characters. There’s not a single unique one in this bunch. If you’ve read any mediocre YA book, then you’ve seen these characters before. They’re dull, they’re lifeless, they don’t have much going on beyond the surface level stuff.

3. All character voices sound exactly the same. The chapters are split between Zelie, Amari, and Inan, and if it wasn’t for their names being at the beginning of each chapter, I’d have no way of telling them apart.

4. The plot is painfully predictable. I saw every single major plot point coming from a mile away, and knowing how this story was going to go step by step for over 500 pages was absolute torture for me.

5. Dumb things happen to get the plot where the author wants it to go. As soon as a character would make a dumb decision, I knew what was coming. This ties back into point #4, but the fact that these decisions are so STUPID adds it as its own bullet point. Example: Zelie and her gang only have five days to get somewhere vitally important to their mission, but they stop to have a party. Because plot. And then the Bad Thing happens because they stayed. Oh no! Who could have seen this coming???

6. Character motivations and decisions make no sense whatsoever. Or they change constantly and are never explained in a way that’s believable or satisfying. That’s if they’re even explained at all. I have a ton of examples for this because it occurs all the time, but I’ll use the moment when Zelie has a chance to share the scroll’s magic and turn the people around her into maji. She thinks it’s the greatest idea ever until, uh oh, for some reason it’s not anymore and she doesn’t want to do it because magic is dangerous. But if you feel that way, Zelie, they why are you still trying to bring magic back to the whole world?

7. The “love” story. Oh my god, the “love” story. This might be the worst relationship like this I’ve ever had to experience in my life. It’s worse than any insta-love trash piles I’ve seen in the history of all terrible insta-love stories. It takes a less than a page. A page! This was the point in the book where I took the longest break in reading because I just couldn’t anymore.

8. Amari’s whole character introduction is extremely flawed. In her first chapter not only are we introduced to her, but we see her being spurred on by the death of her best friend and stealing the magic scroll. Amari is the epitome of what goes wrong when authors tell instead of show. First of all, I don’t know her as a character when she does all these things, so her decisions make no sense to me. And all this stuff about Binta should have been in separate chapters at the very beginning, that way I could actually see the relationship she and Amari had instead of just hearing about it afterward. That could have made Amari’s actions feel less fake when she steals the scroll. But no, all these memories of Binta happen after she’s dead, and I don’t feel the emotions the author wants me to feel since this is about some character I never even knew. And worse, Amari comes off as whiny because of it.

9. A majority of Amari’s chapters should have been given to Zelie. They’re together the entire time, and most of the time when Amari is narrating it feels like the reader is missing out on something. Especially when it comes to the magic and the mythology of this world. I don’t want Amari telling me these things because she doesn’t know anything to begin with. If Zelie had been narrating those chapters it would have been an easier way to work on defining this magic system.

10. For the first half of the book, Inan’s chapters should have been condensed down or just cut completely. He says the same thing every single time. “Duty before self. I force my magic down. Kill the girl, kill magic. Curse her and her silver eyes.” Nine chapters of this. So unnecessary.

11. The ending doesn’t make any sense at all if you take even one second to think about it. This is the only place I have spoilers so skip ahead if you don’t want to know how this story goes. So at the end when Zelie and her gang go to the magical island, Saran and his army are already there. But...how? It’s not said that Zelie gave him the location of the island. And even if she did, why would she not warn her allies that he’d be waiting for them when they got there? And on top of that, Saran managed to capture her father in less than a day and transport him to this island? How? HOW? Mama Agba should have seen that coming, no? But she’s mysteriously absent because...plot. Nothing clicks and it’s the final nail in this coffin for me.

I think the author had good intentions but she couldn’t execute. She talks about why she wrote this book and how seeing news about the murders of people like Mike Brown and Philando Castile made her feel angry and helpless. I absolutely applaud her for wanting to speak out against institutionalized racism and the murders of people of color at the hands of cops. And I’m glad that diversity is finally, finally getting into main stream books. It’s been too long and it’s great that books with POC characters are getting their time in the spotlight. But I’m not going to praise a mediocre book just because it has diversity and was written with good intentions. I’m not going to hype this up when I don’t think it deserves that hype.

Prompt: Playing Monopoly (bonus points for realistic angst)

“This is stupid,” Monica said staring at the monopoly board.

Jen handed out the pieces. “Which do you want to be C.M.?” she asked.

“The car…” Monica mumbled. Jen placed the piece into Monica’s hand then grabbed the dog piece for herself.

“It isn’t any fun to play with two people,” Monica state as Jen handed her the die.

“It’ll be fun.”

Monica rolled and moved her piece across the board. Jen reached over for the die and brushed Monica. Jen rolled the die them moved her piece.

“It’s kinda hot in here,” Jen said taking off her jacket. She only had a tight tank top underneath.

“What is this strip Monopoly?” Monica asked.

Jen smirked. “It could be,” she said.

“Less boring than this… If you land on my space you have to take a piece of clothing off or pay the fine,” Monica said making up rules.

So they started to play following those rules. Instead of paying the fine Jen always took off clothing. She was in her underwear before Monica had removed anything.

“You should really start paying,” Monica laughed.

“You think I have a problem with being naked?”

Monica smiled as Jen rolled again and landed on another of Monica’s spaces. Jen reached for the back of her bra and undid it with ease.

Monica covered her eyes jokingly. “You really have no shame.”

Monica uncovered her eyes laughing. Jen was big, green and naked… and completely comfortable that way.

“Your roll,” Jen said handing Monica the die.

Monica took the die from Jen and rolled. She landed on one of Jen’s spaces. She reached for her money at first then took a long shaking sigh and took off her shirt.

“Finally playin’ the fun way.”

“Jen, I know I was complaining about playing… but I do like spending time with you,” Monica said passing Jen the die.

Jen smiled and took the die from Monica. “I know,” she said rolling again and passing go and landing on a community chest space.

Monica handed her the two hundred dollars, and Jen reached for the community chest card.

“It’s your birthday, collect 10 dollars from each player,” Jen read.

Monica took a look at her depleting funds. “Do I have to?”

“You gotta give me something else if you don’t.”

Monica shifted slightly. “Close your eyes.”

Jen closed her eyes, and Monica crossed towards her and kissed her gently. Jen opened her eyes just as Monica was moving away from her. “Forget the game. I want to do that again!”
