BRIDE OF CHUCKY- 1998 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The best Chucky sequel hands down.
Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) resurrects her former lover Chucky (Brad Dourif) and plans to marry him.
After a falling out he kills her and puts her in doll form also. They have to travel to the buried body of Charles Lee Ray in New Jersey to retrieve his amulet and return to human form....
What a classic. Such a departure from previous Chucky films. The first not to have "Childs Play" in the name. The first not to have Chucky battling Andy. And the movie that introduced Jennifer Tilly to the franchise.
Tumblr media
This film leans fully into comedy and is pretty hilarious at points. The doll sex scene is great.
Plenty of fun kills. Jennifer Tillys bath death scene is tremendous. Damiens piercings being ripped out traumatised me as a kid.
Living Dead Girl by Rob Zombie is great.
Love the late 90s vibe in this film. Bride of Chucky is directed by Ronny Yu who also directed Freddy vs Jason. I think hes a very underated horror director.
Chucky has some great one liners and moments. Katherine Heigl isnt bad as Jade. Julia Stiles was originally cast as Jade but dropped out to star in "10 things i hate about you".
Jennifer Tilly is the star of the show. Hilarious, dramatic and adds so much to this film.
One of my favourite movies.

Child's Play (1988)
"Karen buys her son Andy a sought-after doll for his birthday and Andy names it Chucky. Things take a turn for the worse when Andy discovers that Chucky is possessed by the spirit of a serial killer."
This is a film that was released 34 years ago, and it looks like it was released way, way back. The fashions in the film, the sets and furniture, and the look of the film itself, all hearken back to a very different time. I was easily able to put that aside though, and watch this for what it is......a classic horror film.
I would happily put this up against any other stalker/horror of the last 15 years as one of the best examples of the genre.
There are two very specific things that are the central pillars of this film, that make it as good as it is.
The first is the effects used for Chucky. They are all practical and are easily superior to a lot of effects used even now. The doll is still seen as one of the creepiest characters in movies. A lot of people are still scared when someone, or something, dressed as Chucky runs at them or even looks in their direction. There is a longevity to this character that a lot of actors would kill for. The fact that there is a new tv series running now, that is still terrifying people, is testament to that longevity.
The other thing that solidifies this film, and makes it stand the test of time, is the central human performance. Alex Vincent, as Andy Barclay, was only 7 years old when this film was released and, obviously, younger when they filmed it. He gives an assured, believable, outstanding performance that shines far above the adults in the film. The quality of his performance is such that you'd think he'd been performing for 20 years. Just sublime.
All that being said I really enjoyed a big screen rewatch. Child's Play, as a story, has absolutely stood the test of time, even if the way it looks has not aged well. I'm not going to mark it down for that though. I went to see it to see if it was still a good film, and it is. A solid 8/10 for one of the best horror films in cinema.

M3GAN THEE CREEPY DOLL: Our First Time Watching M3GAN!
The film M3GAN, featuring a creepy girl doll which embodies the "AI gone bad" horror trope, was evaluated. Although a comparison was drawn to the reboot of Child's Play, it's unclear whether M3GAN achieved success in the still-emerging genre.
AI dolls with murderous tendencies… a reboot of Child’s Play tried it with a modern Chucky and didn’t quite land, but what about this creepy girl doll? Did M3GAN hit the mark of being the next big doll horror, and succeed in the still-forming “AI gone bad” horror genre? Well, Jared sat down for the first time and gave it a watch, and here are his thoughts!

Horror TV Shows Have Never Been Better
Tumblr media
Horror has had a tough run on tv shows in the past. It seems like it's been hard for producers to nail exactly what horror fans want and so these shows have failed.
One show that was cancelled early actually was Ash Vs. Evil Dead. This show is beloved by horror fans that love the franchise and the genre. It has all the blood and guts it needs with a good mixture of practical effects.
But the show ended up cancelled by Starz. The show was great and deserves more love. It has great rewatchability.
Another show in this genre that actually is still running is Chucky! Chucky isn't as gritty as Ash vs. Evil Dead. It is definitely more polished with better camera angels and it seems more family friendly. But, that doesn't mean it doesn't lack the passion. Chucky is helmed by all the same people who did the original films. Chucky is still a puppet. There's still great practical effects. There's still a lot of Chucky one liners. It's quirky and fun. There's so much to love. Go watch the new documentary Living With Chucky for more behind the scenes at what goes into making these movies!
Taking an even more comedic approach, What We Do In The Shadows is still out there killing it. The show is based on the film of the same name and this is one you don't want to skip. It has great humor. And is about a bunch of vampires. You will fall in love with the characters. One of the main people directing the episodes and producing this show is Kyle Newachek who is famously from Workaholics! If you love Workaholics humor you should check this out!
But so many horror shows seem to get passed on but they are thriving and need more love! If you dive deeper than the Netflix originals you will find some great shows out there! Check them out!

CHILDS PLAY 2- 1990 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) is now in foster care, his mum has been institutionalised.
A family takes him where things are going ok... until Chucky turns up. Chucky is out for revenge and also still needs Andys body.
Really good movie. Plenty of good characters. Chucky has some funny lines.
Always loved the end showdown at the good guy factory! One of my favourite childs play endings, its such a good setting.
Also, enjoy seeing Jenny Agutter in this, real classy broad. Although, she hates this film and has disowned it as they cut out a lot of her good scenes.

it’s kinda funny to me how, even though my biggest problem with Roger Ebert is how middle of the road white liberal his takes and blind spots were, he’s also one of the only mainstream film critics who actually has To Kill a Mockingbird’s number. Some quotes from his retrospective review:
To Kill a Mockingbird, set in Maycomb, Alabama, in 1932, uses the realities of its time only as a backdrop for the portrait of a brave white liberal.
The courtroom scenes are the most celebrated in the movie…Atticus' summation to the jury is one of Gregory Peck's great scenes, but of course the all-white jury finds Tom Robinson guilty anyway…The problem here, for me, is that the conviction of Tom Robinson is not the point of the scene, which looks right past him to focus on the nobility of Atticus Finch.
Atticus drives out to Tom Robinson's house to break the sad news to his widow, Helen. She is played by Kim Hamilton (who is not credited, and indeed has no speaking lines in a film that finds time for dialog by two superfluous white neighbors of the Finches)…[Bob Ewell] lurches out of the shadows and says to [one of the men], "Boy, go in the house and bring out Atticus Finch." One of the men does so, Ewell spits in Atticus's face, Atticus stares him down and drives away. The black people in this scene are not treated as characters, but as props, and kept entirely in long shot. The close-ups are reserved for the white hero and villain.
This is a tricky note to end on, because it brings Boo Radley in literally from the wings as a distraction from the facts: An innocent black man was framed for a crime that never took place, he was convicted by a white jury in the face of overwhelming evidence, and he was shot dead in problematic circumstances. Now we are expected to feel good because the events got Boo out of the house.
To Kill a Mockingbird is, as I said, a time capsule. It expresses the liberal pieties of a more innocent time, and it goes very easy on the realities of small-town Alabama in the 1930s. One of the most dramatic scenes shows a lynch mob facing Atticus, who is all by himself on the jailhouse steps the night before Tom Robinson's trial. The mob is armed and prepared to break in and hang Robinson, but Scout bursts onto the scene, recognizes a poor farmer who has been befriended by her father, and shames him (and all the other men) into leaving…Could a child turn away a lynch mob at that time, in that place? Isn't it nice to think so.
like, you know what Roger? gotta give it up to you for this one. you nailed it.
