Ride the Cyclone is in Australia, and goddamn am I pissed off.
So it's been known for a while that RTC is coming to Australia professionally, but only very recently was the cast announced.
DISCLAIMER: no hate to the cast. between the cost of living crisis and the government abandoning the entertainment industry, i don't blame these performers for taking the first job they're offered. So no hate to the cast!!!
The theatre running the production is Hayes Theatre Co, based in Sydney. I loved this theatre company, because they had a clear focus on amplifying the voices of marginalised performers, however it seems this does not extend to disabled performers.
For a company that has such a focus on diverse stories I was incredibly disappointed (but entirely unsurprised) to see that Ricky is being played by an able-bodied actor. The cast has racial, gender, and size diversity (which don't get me wrong, is wonderful), but its devastating to see that Hayes has clearly licensed the newer edition of the script, the one that erases any visible sign of Ricky's disability.
For a theatre that emphasises authentic, diverse representation on its stage, it is disgusting to see them perform a show that is a mockery of the disabled experience, created by a man who has used disability as his punchline for his entire career; the version of the script licensed being influenced by the very people who hate crimed the marginalised performer they were supposed to protect.
There are many fun shows Hayes could have picked up that are a much much better representation of the disabled experience -- Tae Tae in the Land of Yaas (an Australian Production, again something this company tends to showcase on their stage), The Little Big Things, How To Dance in Ohio, just to name a few. Instead they had to choose the one that is violently ableist and presents Ricky as a caricature of the stereotypical non-verbal disabled kid. They chose the show in which it is easily accessible knowledge that Ricky is supposed to be physically, and visibly, disabled, but that it was changed due to the author's inadvertent support of a violent hate-crime against a marginalised performer.
yannick-robin did not risk his fucking career bravely speaking out about this for it to be completely ignored and glossed over. he did not risk legal action from the very people who hurt him only for people to pretend the show was never problematic because its more convenient for them.
I feel like I'm screaming into a void here, begging for people to listen. Disabled people deserve to have their stories told authentically and safely. Ride the Cyclone is not authentic. It is not a safe show for disabled performers. It has done nothing but harm disabled people.
Hayes Theatre Co, you are now complicit in the damage this show has done to the disabled theatre community. You are complicit in the crimes of Jacob Richmond, Sarah Rasmussen, and her team of ableist shitheads. And if you say "oh they probably don't know"... If a professional theatre company in one of Australia's biggest theatre centres can't be assed to properly research the shows they are producing, then maybe they shouldn't be in the industry.
Hayes Theatre Co, if you say you care about diversity then ignore disabled people, you don't actually care about diversity. You care about being palatable to your audience.

Cyclone Mocha: IMD predicts an upcoming cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal
Tumblr media
As a low-pressure area develops in the region, Cyclone Mocha, the year's first cyclone, is expected to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal this week. A cyclonic circulation is expected to form around May 6, according to the IMD. However, the cyclone's formation has yet to be confirmed. "On or around May 6, 2023, a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal." "A low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region during the next 48 hours (May 7 and 8) under its influence," the IMD stated on Tuesday. https://twitter.com/Indiametdept/status/1653319468192497664?s=20 The IMD issued its statement after the Global Forecast System, the US weather forecast model, and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts predicted the formation of a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal. The cyclonic storm, if it forms, will be named 'Cyclone Mocha' according to the WMO/ESCAP nomenclature system. Yemen suggested the name, which is based on the Red Sea port city. Most cyclones that formed in the region in recent years, including Amphan in 2020, Asani in 2021, and Yaas in 2022, made landfall in May. Though the IMD has made no predictions about Cyclone Mocha's path, its impact on the coasts of West Bengal and Odisha cannot be ruled out. The Odisha government has already begun preparations to mitigate any damage caused by the cyclone. According to Windy.com, the cyclonic storm is expected to pass over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday next week. It will then gradually move northward, closer to the Indian coast. A low-pressure area forming over the southeast region of the Bay of Bengal will intensify into a cyclonic storm on May 9 near the Andaman Islands, according to the IMD-Global Forecast System (GFS). According to the IMD's forecast, the storm will move north-northeastward towards the east-central Bay of Bengal until May 11. On May 11, a low-pressure area will form in the south Andaman Sea and the southeast Bay of Bengal, followed by a cyclonic storm, according to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF).   Tags: cyclone mocha update, cyclone mocha 2023, mocha cyclone chennai, new Cyclone, Cyclone Mocha, Cyclone Bay of Bengal, Cyclone in May, Cyclone landfall, Cyclone Mocha Odisha, Odisha Cyclone Read the full article

Embarrassing story: I was watching the news with like 5 of my relatives over. So basically I have a habit of reading aloud captions, and this was during Cyclone Yaas, so there was a lot of, like, destruction and news about the bad weather.
And at one point, there was some news about embankments along the southern bay breaking, and I read aloud: <so-and-so> te bandh bhangol. BHANGOL. Which led to my relatives staring at me, and my mother, dead-eyed, correcting me and saying bhanglo, Pika, BHANGLO. It's been nearly a year and the relatives still laugh about that :')
This is a not-so-subtle way of asking if you could make a post about the inherent vowel fuckery of Bangla someday :'))) genuinely no pressure though!
And thank you for all the amazing posts you make already!
Yo, I'm finally answering to this ask lol
First of all, THIS IS SOOOOO RELATABLE :'D Just the other day my mom pointed out that I was mispronouncing the word বনে. It's supposed to be 'bone' and not 'bône'. I debated with her on that, arguing that this sounded like বোনে (also bone) but it seems both of them are indeed pronounced the same. Aishh...
Second of all, I'm essentially just translating this page here.
Rules of pronunciation for the letter অ (ô/o)
If in a word that starts with the letter অ, অ is followed by a consonant with zhô-pholā (য-ফলা), অ is pronounced as ও (o). Eg: অন্য, অধ্যক্ষ
If in a word that starts with the letter অ, অ is followed by a consonant with i-kār (ই-কার) or u-kār (উ-কার), it is pronounced like ও (o). Eg: অতি, অরুণ
If in a word that starts with the letter অ, অ is followed by ক্ষ (kkhô) or জ্ঞ (ggô~), অ is pronounced as ও (o). Eg: লক্ষ, যজ্ঞ
In the Bengali language, the inherent vowel (অ) of the last consonant of many adjectives, instead of being deleted, is pronounced ও (o). Eg: শত, বড়
If অ is present in the middle of a word, and is followed by ই, ঈ, উ, ঊ, ঋ or zhô-pholā (য-ফলা), it is pronounced ও (o). Eg: বিরতি, অসভ্য
In all other cases, it is pronounced ô.
Hope this will help a lot of us (including me lol) from making mistakes while reading...
Thanks for the ask!

May 25, Tuesday
I went up on my terrace after a long time. It was all cloudy and there was a faint rainbow that disappeared within a couple of moments. A cyclone has hit a state nearby and it's raining here too. As dreadful as the cyclone is for the people hit by it directly, I can't help but enjoy the rains.

The Storm
25-05-2021, 9PM
The calm has passed. Fear, fear - the storm is near.
maths and electrical tests went without much fireworks tbf - plain papers, kinda easy, more than enough time for each of them. The real challenge is the mechanics test on thursday - I just PRAY that I don't mess up massively. not that I am well prepared for the wave physics test the day after, but mechanics is just a whole different level of terror.
oh, and there really is a storm coming to get us.
