Per l’Alta Corte girava voce che l’Alto Re e l’Alta Regina avessero un amante. Una persona che i due condividevano, tuttavia non si sapeva chi fosse.

Alcuni supponevano fosse un mortale, altri dicevano fosse uno del Popolo.

Poi si facevano supposizioni sul sesso di detto amante. Femmina o Maschi.

In tutto questo lady (nome), che assiste da lontano un qualche Fae del palazzo, era tutto fuor che impressionata o sorpresa.

Lei è la così detta ‘amante’ dell’Alto Re e dell’Alta Regina. Nessuno avrebbe mai potuto sospettare di qualcuno che non aveva neppure l'occasione di interagire con i due regnanti. Forse era quello il motivo per cui era stata scelta. Qualcuno - non poteva ricordare chi esattamente - glielo aveva detto: Lei era la persona meno probabile. Il fatto che ancora nessuno era riuscito a scoprire chi fosse aveva reso le supposizioni della Regina più che corrette, beh… almeno fino a qualche settimana dietro.

Sfogliò il foglio ingiallito. Non sapeva di cosa era fatto e non era sicura di volerlo sapere, ha smesso di cercare una ragione negli usi qui ad Elfhame, in ogni caso non sarebbe rimasta a lungo in questo posto, aveva intenzione di andarsene il prima possibile.

Non appena il suo debito sarebbe stato saldato.

Le parole scritte con la magia ritraevano l’esistenza di un compagno di letto dei due sovrani, tuttavia nessuno aveva capito chi fosse.

Quando ha letto per la prima volta quel foglietto, aveva riportato i suoi dubbi a Jude e Cardan che risero alla sua preoccupazione lanciandole scuse poco più che al limite della rassicurazione. Poi hanno mandato tutto al vento nel loro crescente piacere. Il discorso non fu più aperto e lei non continuò a esporlo e veniva ancora segretamente scortata ogni giorno nelle loro stanze per riempire il loro tempo.

Facendo un veloce calcolo, passava più tempo con i due di quanto qualsiasi altro membro della corte a parte Jude e Cardan stessi. Oggi era una di quelle infinite giornate.

❝ Per Mab, (nome) non hai freddo vestita così.❞ I passi di Jude erano vicini, troppo vicino. Precisamente dietro di lei, la conferma arrivò quando le posò qualcosa sulle spalle sottili. Il pezzo di stoffa era grande e lungo, questo le faceva supporre appartenesse a uno dei due, forse a Jude stessa. O forse era semplicemente una coperta.

A volte aveva l’impressione di fasciarsi troppo la testa, e forse veramente per loro lei era più di un animale da compagnia. Ma poi era facile confondersi quando la vostra distanza di età era di oltre 10 anni.

Lady (nome) ha dovuto imparare molto presto che tutto questo era nella norma qui se non anche meno del normale.

Esiste molto di peggio, le aveva assicurato una volta Cardan mentre le faceva cerchi sulla schiena. Era la prima notte che era stata scortata da loro.

Jude l’ha tirata verso sé, schiacciando il suo petto con la schiena della mortale, chiudendo intorno alla sua figura la coperta che le aveva poggiato poco prima. Questa era una delle situazioni ‘normali’ a cui non poteva ancora smettere di arrossire e a Jude sembrava piacere questa semplice innocenza. L’avevano messa in situazioni molto peggiori di queste e ancora cose così semplici l’avrebbero imbarazzata a tal punto.

Piccoli elogi le caddero dalla labbra aumentando l’imbarazzo, facendo sentire (nome) - per l’ennesima volta - più al pari di un animale domestico che un amante.

❝Cosa stai leggendo di così interessante da ignorarci? ❞ Le dita di Jude componevano cerchi concentrici sul suo fianco mentre si sporgeva per leggere il contenuto. Cardan era uscito dal bagno con quel comportamento arioso e placido che lo contraddistingue, accentuato dalla doccia calda e dal rossore provocato dalla bottiglia di vino che aveva scolato. (Nome) si riteneva fortunata che i Fae non avessero lo stesso modo di reagire mortale all'ubriachezza. Sei mai quella poteva essere definita ubriachezza.

Lady (nome) abbassò il foglio abbastanza da permettere una facile lettura, consapevole che non sarebbe servito a nulla nasconderlo, lo avrebbero scoperto ugualmente. ❝ Ancora con questa storia? ❞ Cardan si era avvicinato per leggere, e il suo brusco commento non ha fatto molto per allentare la tensione. L’imbarazzo svanì completamente lasciando spazio a dubbio e timore ❝ Non è normale che io abbia paura? ❞ I lati del foglio si sono stropicciati sotto la tua presa. ❝ Nessuno ci rimetterebbe più di me in tutta questa storia. ❞ Un sospiro lasciò le labbra della Regina, poi le stesse labbra posarono un bacio sul retro dell’orecchio mandando brividi lungo tutto il corpo della ragazza. ❝ Mi sembra di averti già spiegato che ho tutto sotto controllo. Alla fine era inevitabile avrebbero scoperto dell’esistenza di qualcun altro…❞ Cardan si è seduto sul letto, (nome) non l’ha visto ma lo ha sentito. Il peso al suo fianco era aumentato, le mani del Re spostarono le gambe della mortale sopra le proprie, accarezzando la pelle nuda.

Per la prima volta erano calde le mani di Cardan. Era una sensazione piacevole e disgustosa allo stesso tempo. Il suo corpo rispondeva ormai a comando ai loro tocchi e questo la ripugnava abbastanza da cercare di ritrarre la gambe inutilmente. Le mani del sovrano strinsero la presa in una silenziosa minaccia a rimanere dove era. Non c’era il solito conforto che di solito lui rappresentava.

Decise di abbandonarsi nuovamente a loro.

Un sorriso tirò le labbra del Re e poco si poteva intuire cosa gli passasse per la testa. ❝ C-cosa intendi…? ❞ Il dubbio si insinuò persistente in lei. Se fosse stati loro a far trapelare la notizia come avvertimento. Per darle la consapevolezza del loro potere, capacità e influenza. Del diritto che avevano su di lei ma soprattutto del fatto che ancora gli apparteneva.

Loro avrebbero potuto tranquillamente mettere la voce di un amante per farle capire quanto lei necessitasse di loro o che non era ancora uscita da quella situazione abbastanza da poter fare una qualsiasi acrobazia azzardata.

(Nome) avrebbe voluto ritirarsi su se stessa con le gambe abbastanza vicine da poterle abbracciare e farsi più piccola in confronto alle due potenze che la circondavano.

Non riusciva a vedere Jude ma dallo sguardo di Cardan si poteva dedurre che sicuramente qualcosa era leggibile nella sua espressione.

Non ebbe il coraggio di girarsi

❝ Oh cara sei così carina quando fingi di non capire. ❞ Cardan rise con ironia e leggerezza mentre accarezzava, in un vago intento di tranquillizzarla, la pelle nuda. Eppure (nome) non ci trovava niente di divertente in quella situazione, anzi il tutto era sempre più inquietante. Non stava nemmeno fingendo come lui supponeva. Non tutti nascondevano la propria intelligenza sotto un velo di ignoranza come avevano fatto loro.

Lei non era stata presente durante la loro storia, ma conosceva il finale. ❝ Pensi che nessuno abbia sentito le tue dolci urla. ❞ Non si era accorta di aver mai urlato così forte da essere sentita . Un rossore si diffuse sul viso della ragazza nella consapevolezza delle scorsi notti. I due risero inteneriti mentre Jude si alzava dal suo posto. Il foglio di cronaca che aveva prima tra le mani era caduto a terra, e Jude lo raccolse. Lo lesse velocemente e lo strappo in 4.

(Nome) guardò sconcertata l’azione seguendo ancora la regina con lo sguardo, mentre si spostava verso il caminetto. In un attimo, prima ancora che qualcuno potesse obiettare, i pezzi di carta sono stati gettati nel fuoco.

❝ Cosi va molto meglio, ora non avrai più motivo di pensarci. ❞ Lo sguardo della Regina di Elfhame era su di lei, mentre lei guardava il foglio diventare cenere davanti ai suoi occhi.

Si chiese se avessero ragione, se veramente era solo paranoica. Forse si poteva godere tutto questo senza che diventasse un pericolo. Ma non era stata Jude stessa a dirle di non credere a niente che era offerto dalla corte? Lei e suo marito erano la corte. Modellata e governata da loro per loro, lei era una pedina su cui giocare.

La mano di Cardan posava sulla sua guancia ora, guidandola a distogliere lo sguardo dal fuoco per averlo per se. Gli occhi color mezzanotte con l’anello dorato intorno alla pupilla erano quasi ipnotici. Si trovò quasi a chiedersi se qualcuno potesse mai sospettare che ci fosse qualcuno che lui avrebbe guardato con lo stesso ardore e desiderio con cui guardava sua moglie.

❝ Ora ricominciamo da dove ci siamo interrotti.❞ Niente li aveva interrotti in realtà e lui era ancora in bagno quando era arrivata. Tuttavia non disse niente. Non disse che era ancora dubbiosa. Non disse che nonostante il foglio fosse stato bruciato il problema persiste. Non disse nemmeno che in quel momento voleva rimanere da sola, come tutte le altre sere prima di queste. Ma giustamente nessuna di quelle cose trovò posto per essere dette o ascoltate.

Strange was the first word you thought of when you woke up in a cozy hammock of grass and things that only a qualified florist could determine. “Yes?” You said numbly, the shock of seeing her took your breath away without knowing it.

She liked that reaction.

“My dear, you are with me now.”

Her tone didn't give you confidence.

“Who are you? Where I am? Because I am here? Are you from the mob?” Fear spread like fire with sticks.

"Calm down, little lily." Her voice was captivating, your muscles relaxed and your expression stopped being aggressive.

The mysterious lady approached you with steps similar to what she would take an angel, you hardly heard any noise and she had the poise of a model. Seeing her come towards you allowed you to observe her clothing, it seemed from those fantasy novels that you vaguely heard from your university classmates.

“You're mine.”

You stood up immediately.

"I don't even know who the hell you are!"

"Don't talk to me like that." To your surprise, your mouth closed as if by magic. “Little human, if you'd let me explain...” She didn't even bother to see your vague attempts to speak, “everything would be easier.”

"Well... talk to me," you said with great force, for some reason you couldn't insult her or raise your voice.

Her dark blue lips distracted you, but your willpower brought you back to reality.

“I am Nicasia, little lily, I am not a mortal like you. I'm not human and this is your new home.”

You took a few steps back, alarmed. It must have been some crazy, raving actress!

“Home? What are you talking about? Is it some kind of joke?”

"I can't joke…" she murmured vaguely before turning her attention to you. “I have chosen you as my consort, sweet lily. You should be proud.”

“What are you?”

The fear had escalated to the point that it was reflected in your voice. You thought about some kind of scandal related to kidnappings, any rumors to clear everything up and not have a panic attack right then and there.

"I'm a fairy, what's more," she proudly raised her chest, "I am the crown princess of the kingdom of waters and tides."

The expression on your face made Nicasia smile.

You were a limnologist, your passion had made you interact with the aborigines who lived near rivers in various parts of the Strait of California and the Mississippi. You heard legends of fantastic beings, of seductive women with long hair in shades similar to blue and green who used to take unsuspecting people to the depths.

"You're kidding," was the only thing you could manage. There was a strange tightening in your throat when you wanted to say "crazy".

You took a quick look around the place, noticing the magical landscape that surrounded you. The floor was made of sea stone that was curiously warm despite your worn boots, the walls themselves seemed to be made of flower buds, and a lot of precious objects further embellished the room.

"You'll have a hard time accepting it, but I'll show you."

To your surprise, a large amount of water came out of the large pink shell that served as a sink. Nicasia delicately moved her wrist and turned it into a gigantic drop.

That was enough to understand how screwed you were.

“I don't want any of this, really. Choose someone else, I… I'm not the one.”

The princess looked at you as if you had said something ridiculous. She shook her head and got as close to you as possible, leaving you between her and the hammock.

"Aren't you the one? I have not met any mortal more valuable than you. When my mother told me that she could start looking for a partner, I thought it was the most tedious thing in the world. I talked to almost every damn thing here looking for someone worthy to be my mate and found no one. Had it not been for my good friend Cardan, I would never have dared to go to the human world.”

She gave a dramatic pause and continued.

“Your world is chaotic, weird and uncomfortable, but I steeled myself and went on my way looking for someone special. I was persecuted by unworthy servants, naive stalkers...” Her gaze turned dark on hers. “human beings who seemed to be important because they were followed by devices called cameras. I was bored and decided to take a dip in an almost unknown river, no one would bother me there, the mud people know not to go near that area and that's when I saw you. You had a notebook and a pen in your ear, distracted you looked at the tides in the distance and you didn't notice my presence. You never did, that's what interested me. You weren't annoying like the others, you were smart…, generous and charming…” The crazy gleam in her eyes startled you. “I accompanied you both on your outings in the woods and around your beloved mortal school. A few moons passed and I realized that you were perfect. You are perfect to be a queen by my side.”

She took your hands without realizing the fear that invaded you.

"Please," you begged, holding back tears.

“Please what? sweet pearl.” Unaware of your fear, she stroked your chin. “You will remain with me forever, you will have power and riches, you will be my beloved companion forever. I will not let anyone hurt you, I will destroy all those who want to separate you from my side or seek to destroy you. No, I'm not going to allow even an unseemly look. You belong to me, lily, from the moment I saw you.”

"Leave me alone, I beg you."

The anxious pressure in your throat can no longer be ignored. It's too much information for your anxious mind.

This blog isn't dedicated to any particular fandom, so don't be fooled by whatever my blog's current theme is. I post what I like. My main criterion to determine whether or not I post a fic here is whether or not I want to reread a fic someday. I'm a simple woman. (This blog is basically my library.)

Most of the fanfictions here are female reader or OC inserts. It's quite rare for me to post character/character fics because it's also rare for me to read character/character fics. The Cruel Prince Book Review

The Cruel Prince Book Review by Holly Black

I honestly have no idea of where to begin with this book. There’s so much to say, probably too much to even get on the page without alienating people. This book has a lot wrong with it, and yet, yet, it was a highly addicting, almost fervent read with an ending that left me trembling and wide-eyed. I guess there’s no other solution than to just jump right in. Holly Black is giving us a thumbs up so here we go.

Holly Black. I’m sure she’s a lovely person, helps old ladies cross the street and brings casseroles to her sick neighbors and everything, but she’s one of the few YA authors that have made it onto my X-list. While this may sound dangerous and elite-ooohhhh, an x-list, it’s really quite simple and judgmental on my part: I read a book I don’t like from an author and that author is banned.

It only takes one time.

That being said, I love books. If it wasn’t obvious with the whole reading and writing book reviews thing. It takes a gargantuan effort to get me to hate a book. Almost always I can find something good, a character I liked, a scene that was memorable, a charming line of dialogue. Almost always without exception do I finish a book. If, and only if all of these are missing, the author will make it onto my x-list and I’ll ditch the book midway through.

Holly Black was one of those authors up until this book. Honestly, I’m struggling with deciding if I should keep her on the list or not, but that’s neither here nor there. I only decided to pick up the book because of its position on the New York Times Bestseller’s List, because it deals with fairies, which I love (The Wicked Lovely series any one?), and because it’s been a few years and I decided to give Holly the benefit of the doubt. But enough about me, let’s get on to the story.

So, why do I hate it? And why do I hate that I kind of like it?

The biggest reason: Jude Duarte. Our protagonist, main character, and female heroine. Arguably. I don’t think I have ever read a YA novel centering around a main character with less empathy, connection, or conscious. She murders, fights her sister, fights her surrogate father, fights the other fairy teens, fights pretty much everyone actually and never seems to learn anything??

I was honestly baffled. She spent chapter after chapter making horrible decision after horrible decision and seemed to get rewarded for it at the end? She gets the boy (in a messed up very unhealthy kind of way), gets the power, and gets the recognition, but at what cost?

Maybe it’s because I’m a teacher, or maybe it’s simply because I’m a decent human being, but Jude is a monster. I cringed when my students asked me what the book was about because I didn't’ want them reading it. They learn nothing from it: no morals, experience, or difficulties. Jude just does what she wants when she wants and it’s awful (although you wouldn’t be able to tell from Holly’s expression in the picture below).

In a way, I think Jude is entirely how Holly Black planned her out to be. She mentions on almost every page how she’s broken, how something is wrong with her, and how she isn’t human, justifying all of her behavior on the murder of her parents and her traumatic backstory.

It’s horrendously disconcerting to read about a human being who is more of an abomination than a person. And she’s the only notable character in the book, you can’t get away from her if you tried. No one else has the same amount of attention, page count, or insight.

Outside of Jude, there are very few characters whom you empathize with or even like as a reader. There is one character that I liked throughout the whole novel and he’s still awful. The title of the book is named after him if that gives you any ideas. So with no empathetic or likable characters, what else could go wrong?

A lot actually. Quite a myriad things that are presented to the reader. There are several plot points that left me mystified and confused-who is Dain again? Why is he worse than Balekin? Or Orlaugh? Or Roiben? Black introduces you to so many political figures in such a short amount of time that it’s impossible to keep track of all of them without a chart and pictorial representation. Game of Thrones can pull it off with incredible storytelling and intricate meshing, but Holly Black can’t, and it gets frustrating not knowing what’s going on a lot of the time.

Another frustrating part is the world of Faerie as a whole. Holly almost expects her readers to know that riding toads is normal or what will happen to mortals when they make bargains, but most of this information is highly specialized and very uncommon public knowledge.

She also includes details that are completely ridiculous: I never needed to know what Jude does when she gets her period. Ever. It has no relevance to the story and it was more disturbing as a tidbit than a fascinating aspect of world building.

Lastly, the thing that bewildered me the most was Jude’s unflinching decision to stay in Faerie. It is a place that loathes her, wants her dead, and scorns her at every turn. It is a place that despises humans and everything they stand for (which also rankled. It stings to be be told how horrible and inferior you are as a human-which all of Holly’s readers are-at every turn of the page).

But Jude is adamant about staying in Faerie because it’s her home. Who in the f*** actually cares? I’d leave a home that tried to murder me every day, that was excruciatingly dangerous, and not all that great from what Holly has to say about it. So her decision to remain in Faerie over and over and over again even when she is given an out by her sister is truly insane. It’s lunacy that I cannot even comprehend and that bothers me (although it doesn’t seem to bother Holly. She looks like she sleeps soundly at night after all that grinning).

So. All that in mind, why was this an addicting read? Why did I finish it in a week? Why did I go to Holly Black’s book signing last Friday? The ending was very entertaining. The whole book was damn entertaining. I loathed Jude, but I wanted to see what happened to her. I hated Faerie and all the people in it, but I wanted to see how the political quagmire would unravel and unfold.

I care about none of the characters except for Cardan (begrudgingly-and only a little) and yet, the ending was this dark, twisted dystrophy of madness, bloodshed and scheming that I couldn’t help but be sucked into and spat out in the end leaving me wanting more.

Either this was exactly what Holly Black wanted, and greatly succeeded, or this was not at all what she was going for, and yet, resulted in anyway. I can’t make up my mind about it, but I suppose I don’t have to just yet seeing as books two and three of The Cruel Prince trilogy are in the works. I’ll bide my time in both agony and anticipation until then.

Recommendation: If you can stomach a vile protagonist, poor plot points, repugnant side characters, and confounding choices in order to experience a truly intriguing ending that promises more offbeat and gritty situations, then pick up The Cruel Prince and leave your regret behind (as I did before going to meet her and Susan Dennard).

Score: 7/10 (For now)

1. Escogida (dark! Nicasia x reader!)

Extraño fue la primera palabra que pensaste cuando despertaste en una acogedora hamaca de hierba y cosas que solo un florista calificado podría determinar. No recordabas haber bebido, ni haberte ido a una fiesta de amigos. Es más, debido a la mudanza repentina a Estados Unidos, tu número de conocidos había bajado increíblemente.

Te sentaste en el suave cuerpo de tela intentando recrear nuevamente cómo acabaste ahí.

Pero nada.

Sentiste como tu garganta se tensaba por el miedo que comenzaba a nacer en el profundo de tu pecho. Moviste las manos ansiosamente y te concentraste en el sonido de una catarata a lo lejos, agua goteando pacíficamente como en las revistas de viaje solían describir.

No querías tener un ataque de pánico ahora.

—Has despertado.

Moviste la cabeza rápidamente.

Frente tuyo estaba la doncella más hermosa que habías visto nunca. Poseía una trenza bien cuidada, brillante, larga y decorada con perlas, sin embargo, lo más sorprendente era su cabellera azul. Su cabello se veía como si hubiese sido tratado en las mejores peluquerías de Nueva York, solo para estrellas de cine y famosos.

—¿Sí? —dijiste atontada, el impacto de verla te quitó el aliento sin saberlo.

Esa reacción le gustó.

—Querida, estás conmigo ahora.

Su tono no te dio confianza.

—¿Quién eres? ¿Dónde estoy? ¿Por qué estoy aquí? ¿Eres de la mafia? —el miedo se expandió como el fuego con leñas.

—Cálmate, pequeño lirio —su voz era cautivadora, tus músculos se relajaron y tu expresión dejó de ser agresiva.

La misteriosa dama se acercó a ti con pasos similares a los que daría un ángel, prácticamente no oíste algún ruido y tenía el equilibrio de una modelo. Verla venir hacia a ti te permitió observar su ropaje, parecía de esas novelas de fantasía que vagamente escuchabas por tus compañeros universitarios.

—Eres mía.

Te pusiste de pie inmediatamente.

—¡Ni siquiera sé quién demonios eres!

—No me hables de esa manera —ante tu sorpresa, tu boca se cerró como por arte de magia—. Pequeña humana, si me dejaras explicarte…—ni siquiera se molestó en ver tus vagos intentos de hablar—, todo sería más sencillo.

—Pues, …háblame —dijiste a duras fuerzas, por alguna razón no podías insultarla o levantar la voz.

Sus labios de un color celeste oscuro te distrajeron, pero tu fuerza de voluntad te devolvió a la realidad.

—Soy Nicasia, pequeño lirio, no soy una mortal como tú. No soy humana y éste es tu nuevo hogar.

Retrocediste unos pasos, alarmada. ¡Debía de ser alguna actriz desquiciada delirante!

—¿Hogar? ¿De qué estás hablando? ¿Es una especie de broma?

—No puedo bromear…—murmuró vagamente antes de centrar su atención hacia ti—. Te he escogido como mi consorte, dulce lirio. Deberías de estar orgullosa.

—¿Qué eres?

El miedo había escalado al punto de que se reflejó en tu voz. Pensaste acerca de algún tipo de escándalo relacionados a secuestros, cualquier rumor para aclarar todo y no sufrir un ataque de pánico allí mismo.

—Soy un hada, es más —orgullosamente levantó su pecho—, soy princesa heredera del reino de las aguas y mareas.

La expresión de tu rostro hizo sonreír a Nicasia.

Eras limnologa, tu pasión te había hecho relacionarte con los aborígenes que vivían cerca de ríos por diversas partes del estrecho de California y del Misisipi. Escuchaste leyendas de seres fantásticos, de seductoras mujeres con melenas de tonos similares al azul y verde que acostumbraban a llevarse a incautos a las profundidades.

—Estás bromeando —fue lo único que pudiste articular. Había un extraño apretón en tu garganta cuando querías decir: “loca”.

Diste una rápida ojeada por el lugar, notando el paisaje mágico que te rodeaba. El suelo estaba hecho de piedra marina que curiosamente era tibia a pesar de tus desgastadas botas, las paredes como tal parecían hechos de capullos de flor y un montón de objetos preciosos embellecían aún más el cuarto.

—Te costará aceptarlo, pero te lo demostraré.

Ante tu sorpresa, de la gran concha rosada que servía de lavadero salió una gran cantidad de agua, Nicasia movió delicadamente su muñeca y la convirtió en una gota gigantesca.

Eso fue suficiente como para entender lo jodida que estabas.

—Yo no quiero nada de esto, de verdad. Escoge a otra persona, yo… yo no soy la indicada.

La princesa te miró como si hubieras dicho una ridiculez. Negó con la cabeza y se acercó lo más posible de ti, dejándote entre la hamaca y ella.

—¿Qué no eres la indicada? No he conocido a ninguna mortal más valiosa que tú. Cuando mi madre me dijo que podría empezar buscando una pareja, pensé que era lo más tedioso del mundo. Hablé con casi todos los condenados seres de aquí buscando a alguien digno de ser mi consorte y no hallé a nadie. Si no hubiese sido por mi buen amigo Cardan, nunca me hubiese atrevido a ir al mundo humano.

Dio una pausa dramática y continuó.

—Tu mundo es caótico, extraño e incómodo, mas me armé de valor y seguí mi camino buscando a alguien especial. Me persiguieron indignos sirvientes, ingenuos acosadores…—su mirada se tornó oscura—, seres humanos que parecían ser importantes porque los seguían aparatos llamados cámaras. Estaba aburrida y decidí dar un chapuzón en un río casi desconocido, allí nadie me molestaría, los de barro saben que no deben de acercarse en esa zona y allí fue cuando te vi. Tenías una libreta y un lapicero en tu oreja, distraída mirabas las mareas a la lejanía y no notaste mi presencia. Nunca lo hiciste, eso fue lo que me interesó. No eras molesta como los otros, eras lista, generosa y encantadora…—el brillo desquiciado en sus ojos te asustó—. Te acompañé tanto en tus salidas en los bosques como en los alrededores de tu amada escuela mortal. Pasaron algunas lunas y me di cuenta de que eras perfecta. Eres perfecta para ser una reina a mi lado.

Tomó tus manos sin darse cuenta del espanto que te invadía.

—Por favor —suplicaste, conteniendo las lágrimas.

—Por favor, ¿qué? dulce perla —ignorante de tu miedo, te acarició la barbilla—. Permanecerás eternamente conmigo, tendrás poder y riquezas, serás mi amada compañera para siempre. No dejaré que nadie te haga daño, destruiré a todos los que quieran separarte de mi lado o busquen acabar contigo. No, no pienso permitir una mirada indecorosa siquiera. Me perteneces, lirio, desde el momento en que te vi.

—Déjame sola, te lo ruego.

La presión ansiosa en tu garganta no puede ser ignorarse más. Es demasiada información para tu ansiosa mente.
