Your story starts at a coffee shop, sounds simple but your interaction really wasn't. You first met Derek a few months before your internship at the hospital. You just moved to Seattle with your cousin Meredith Grey and your meeting with Derek was totally unexpected but you'll never forget it.

Now, as weird or stereotypical it may sound it was love at first sight to Derek. You were there by yourself studying a medical book and Derek just happened to be walking by and saw you in the window.

Your first date was simple but romantic. You told him you weren't into anything too extravagant, so you went to a nice Italian restaurant and you talked the whole hole time.

You talked about anything and everything. Favorite movies, favorite childhood memories. You talked about why you guys became doctors, but failed to mention you both would be working at Seattle Grace Hospital.

Communication won't be a problem in your relationship. You both just find it so easy to talk to each other.

Later that night you went to your place and watched a movie. You almost kissed, but you made a rule not to kiss on the first date. Derek respected that and didn't have a problem waiting for you.

But you couldn't help it, your first kiss happened on the fourth date. You were at the movies and you couldn't help but lean into each other. The kiss was passionate and sweet. He held you and treated you like you were the only girl in the world.

The way he kisses you makes your heart race. He holds your face in his hands and you honestly feel like you and him are the only things that matter in the world.

He never felt this way with anyone, not even Addison.

You guys were dating for about a month before you started your internship at the hospital. You were suprised when Dr. Bailey asinged you to be on his service, you didn't even know he was an Attending there.

So you powered through it and ignored the whispers and honestly it made you two stronger as a couple.

You have an old black Labrador that is your protector and shadow. He didn't like Derek at first. Your dog Duke would stare him down every time he came over to the house, grumble at him and make sure to sleep on Derek's side of the bed, and he will shove his way between you if Derek was hugging you.

Speaking of which you and Mark become pretty good friends surprisingly. It'll scare Derek at first and in the back of his mind he'll have this fear of Mark sleeping with you.

Even if you're good friends with Mark he's not your person. Callie is your person and later on you become close to April and kinda become her guard dog.

Dating Derek Shepherd headcanons...

He is your biggest supporter. Derek is your absolute number one fan in a way you've never had before. You've never had someone be so wholly and completely on your side, supporting you and encouraging you all the way.

You'd need to be in a similar career as him. I really think you'd need to be a Doctor/Surgeon/Nurse/someone in the hospital to date him. It just doesn't work if you don't know how hard and time consuming the job is.

It's hard. It can be really hard when your schedules don't match and you find that plans you both have are being cancelled for emergency surgeries but you and Derek try so hard to keep communication lines open. How do you think MerDer would react to Alex being bi and sneaking out to meet a guy or someone from the hospital catches him and MerDer find out (I know he doesn't experience any attraction due to being little but if he were Big or in another AU)

I think Alex would be so sneaky about it and would start to set up lies for alibis (managing to pay Jackson in coffee or something to say they're going out together somewhere while also telling Jackson nothing about who he was going out with) and sneaks out at night, or claims to be working nightshifts (that one rarely though as he knows he'll be found out fast) While MerDer try not to be overbearing when he's big they do worry a lot about him, and Alex is often grounded anyway, and he does have a curfew for when he's not working as even when Big as a Little he needs more sleep than Neutrals or Caregivers

He ends up being seen by Bailey who is at the same bar with some friends, but Alex and the guy, who also works at the hospital, leaves before she can go over, after he leaves she does see that there were two empty beers on his table. Alex gets caught sneaking back in, he claims he just went for a run, and MerDer are already so tired from working that they ground him for being out past curfew and tell him that they're going to have a long conversation after work the next day

It's only when at work that they find out - with Bailey bumping into Derek (cause the two of them are friends lbr) and stopping the elevator like they do, and being like 'I'm not telling you how to parent, but I'm surprised you and Grey let Alex out on a date at a bar at night, especially without you guys around." She quickly realises by the look on Derek's face that he had no idea and is like "... ah... I'm guessing you definitely didn't know about the whole beer thing then?"

Derek literally goes storming off and reluctantly forces himself to see Mer instead of going straight to Alex and grounding him forever , because he knows (after several fights in the past) that parenting is them having to talk first.

Meredith hears about it and like Derek wants to find out who this guy is and kill him, but they need to find out who is first, they page Alex claiming its an emergency and he thinks it going to be a cool surgery.... nope, its them and they force him to go to Derek's office which is when he knows he's in trouble they force themselves to not yell or say anything until they get to the office, and when they do they demand the name of whoever it was he was on a date with

Alex internally spirals, Jimmy Evans was probably every type of phobic, and Alex didn't think that MerDer would be but he worries now.

MerDer on the other hand aren't even thinking about the sex or gender of whoever it was, they just care that Alex has been hiding it from them, sneaking around, and drinking when he definitely shouldn't.

Meredith is like "Alex I mean it, tell me his name now. I'm going to kick his ass."

"So am I!"

"Wait... what, his ass? It's not like he turned me bi, the fuck?"

thats when MerDer get confused and realise Alex is looking panicked.

"Yeah, you were drinking, Alex, and sneaking around, hiding things from us? He's clearly an asshole-"

its then that they realise that they probably can't kill this guy, even if they feel protective of Alex.

They assure him that they know someone can't just turn him bi. That they're not homophobic or anything, and love him no matter what.

Then they get him to tell them absolutely everything, because they need to be able to trust him, so he does... and totally ends up grounded for a month...

They also find out about the guy, like who it is, how they met, what he knows about Alex or doesn't know.

They all leave to head back to work and MerDer privately admit to each other that they still want to kill the guy, and are like "Who doesn't ask about their classification in the first few dates?" then realise that they only promised not to kill him... they didn't promise not to threaten him....... so of course they do threaten him, because at the end of the day they know what they are, and that's protective parents

they also give Alex a very indepth sex talk, he points out that he's both a doctor and completed high school, they tell him they don't care, they know him, and they heard him and Jackson saying that they thought the morning after pill is 100% effective, and they're like 'nope, you're gonna be safe, whether you do or not, and you're getting regular checks'

'and someones going to be in the same place as you are on dates until we know him better, us, or one of your uncles'

Alex would never agree to them that it's nice getting to have essentially the teen experience which he never had, even if they're overprotective and embarrassing

~~Christmas in New York~~

“Cmon Derek, can’t you just tell me where we are going now” Addison pleaded as they walked through the city of New York, his hands covering her eyes, they were up to their ankles in snow.

“We’re almost there, just trust me Addie” Derek laughed. Addison hated surprises, she completely despised them, they’d been dating for two years now and he rarely got away with surprising his girlfriend.

They were on a pre-Christmas vacation in New York, and they had agreed that Derek could plan a special day for them both, although Addison was sooner regretting her decision when she’d woken up. Derek had picked out her outfit before they even left to come to New York, Addison had an outfit for absolutely every situation. She was wearing a white thick turtleneck jumper tucked into a brown corded skirt, her black winter coat, with tights, extra fluffy socks and a pair of brown boots.

New York was loud, there were people all around, the streets lit up but Christmas lights and decorations. The sky slightly grey as the snow fell slowly and melted as it hit Addison's warm cheeks. She felt like they’d been walking forever, in reality it had been about 2 minutes from the hotel, she just wasn’t sure what to expect.

“Okay Addie, we’re here” Derek took his hands down from her eyes putting an arm around her shoulder as he watched her face light up covering her mouth with one hand.

“You remembered,” she leaned in and placed a kiss on his lips.

“How could I forget” Derek had taken her to the Bryant Park ice skating rink. Addison had mentioned when they very first met how she loved ice skating, her parents took her and her brother to the Alps every year growing up, she said skating felt like home, and since that day he’d wanted to bring her. Addison struggled to relax a lot of the time, she’d been going through a stressful time at the practice, probably one of her worst years yet, but when she was here with Derek all her worries melted away. He’d been staying up with her often lately, she’d come home from work when they were on different shifts and he’d have dinner made for her and try to help her relax. Her anxiety had been so much worse but he’d learnt her triggers and knew what to do when she was struggling. He knew when it was a bad night and offered her extra comfort. She was grateful for Derek and how careful he was with her, before him she’d spent so many nights alone wondering what her purpose was and what exactly she was here for. With Derek around he brought a light to her life she’d never experienced, like a new colour that could never be explained.

“So this is why you made me wear extra socks” she laughed as she tied her skates, she loved Derek so much, they hit it off almost immediately when they met. He wasn't like the other guys she had dated, he treated her well, they shared the same goals. She fitted in to his family, she was even spending Christmas there this year, with Derek and his sisters, his mother and his best friend Mark. Something about being around Derek’s family made her feel more at home than when she was with her own family but she liked that, she liked knowing that they actually cared about her and wanted to know about her days and how she was getting on. She also felt like she had a place as Amelia’s big sister. Of course Amelia already had her big sisters but they’re getting on with their lives, Addison wanted to show her the love she wished she’d had from a big sister growing up. Being slightly estranged from her mother whom she never saw eye to eye with, having Derek's mom treat her like one of her own held a special place in her heart.

“So are you ready to see me fall on my face” Derek laughed, he’d only been ice skating once before, he’d taken Amelia when she was younger and neither of them were any good at it. In fact he could barely stand on the skates but he wanted to see Addison on the ice.

They stepped onto the ice together, Derek clung to the side for support while Addison was like a swan to water, it wasn’t so busy in the mornings, people were at work and children were at school, but Derek also knew Addison wouldn’t have felt as comfortable being around a huge crowd, she liked people, just not a lot all at once.

“You know I could get you a penguin, like what the children use” Addison laughed, “just let go of the side, you’re making it more difficult being bent over” she took hold of his hand and let him get his balance in one spot before slowly pushing off. After a wobbly start they had picked up a little bit of speed and were circling the rink together. Addison's hair blew in the wind with tiny flakes of snow landing all over her, it’s like her sparkle had been set free, she felt so light and happy. Derek was actually surprised at himself, he was actually gliding quite gracefully alongside his girlfriend feeling the cool breeze against his face and the warmth radiating from Addison, he too was the happiest he’d been in a while. Her and Derek had been living together just shy of a year, only a small place but they’d started to make it a home.

“See I’m a pro” Derek laughed trying to show off by going on one foot but stumbled and struggled to regain his balance without falling, to which he failed. “Well almost, you should see your face” Derek laughed as he looked up at Addison from the ground. Addison's eyes were huge, she wasn’t sure whether to laugh or be concerned. “Turn around for a second,” Derek asked her and smiled, she looked confused.

“Derek just get up-” Addison started but was cut off

“Turn around for a second” he asked again, and she did, spun carefully on her skates.

“Derek I don’t know what you think you’re doing, I swear if you try and pull me over whilst trying to get up I will leave you in the middle of the ice and you will be crawling back to the edge, there are people looking at you already” she laughed nervously. Her favourite Christmas song started playing, the Christmas song by Nat King Cole, it made her feel warm inside.

“Okay you can turn back around” he said

“Oh thank goodness I-” she stopped, Derek was still on the ice, this time looking up at her with the brightest smile and twinkle in his eye.

“Addison, I wanted to make this special you know, I had to plan exactly what I was going to do and then we planned this trip and I knew this would be the perfect way. I love you Addison, I’ve spent the last 2 years loving you, and learning new things about you. How you like your coffee and toast in the morning. How when you don’t go to sleep before 11pm you’re the cutest kind of cranky in the morning and everyday I fall more in love with you. This may come as a shock to you, I mean you look shocked at least, but I am down on one knee in the middle of an ice rink with a ring staring up at you and I guess the only thing left to say is, Addie, will you marry me?”

She stood once again in shock, a hand covering her mouth, a single tear falling down her cheek. She too loved Derek so much. “Of course I’ll marry you” she took the ring and placed it on her finger, and helped Derek back to his feet, “I love you Derek”

“I love you too Addison” they were both so in the moment they hadn’t noticed the people around them clapping, Addison blushed slightly but she felt safe in Derek's arms. “Let’s go get warmed up”

They returned their skates to the desk and put their boots back on, Derek put his flat cap on, and got them both a hot chocolate from a coffee cart on the way back to the hotel. Addison still couldn’t believe what had just happened, the love of her life proposed in the middle of New York while ice skating, coincidentally whilst her favourite song was playing. He really had thought this day out perfectly for her which made it even more special. She never thought she would be the marrying type.

“So soon to be Mrs shepherd how does that sound” Derek teased.

“I thought you could become Mr Montgomery” she laughed, Derek would never go for that.

“I spoke to Bizzy and The captain by the way, they know about us in case you were thinking about them” he smiled.

It had crossed Addison's mind for a second what her parents may think, they had met Derek, they just weren’t the family type but knowing he had their blessing first meant something to her that she couldn’t put into words.

They spent the rest of the afternoon and evening in the hotel Addison had had a bath when they had gotten in as an attempt to warm up and Derek had ordered them room service and put on the Christmas TV channel while they laid in bed and waited for their food to come up. Addison cosied up next to him staring at the ring with a smile on her face. This is where she wanted to be.

“Derek” she looked up at him. “How did you know I’d say yes?” she smiled.

“The truth is I didn’t, but I hoped that you would because I want to spend every day for the next 70 years with you”

“So what happens when it’s been 71 years” she laughed.

“You know what I mean Addie, I want to spend the rest of my life with you, doing what we love, surrounded by our people, and one day we can start a family of mini Addison and Dereks, whatever it is we end up doing, wherever the future takes us, I want you by my side the rest of the way”

“I’ll always be here Derek, I’m here for the long run”

They just kept looking at each other with raised eyebrows wondering if they were there for the same reason, until Billy broke the silence. (Apparently their dealer was being sketchy and Billy and Derek beat the dealer up)

— Billy hates vapes, specially the ones Derek buys. He usually sticks with regular cigars.

— Derek introduces Billy to crack. As much as Billy looks like a bad ass he’s actually just a guy that smokes cigars and drinks beer. That simple.

Billy dosent really like getting high, Derek respects it but still calls him a pussy.

~you've known Derek since you were kids. Even though he's got a few years on you the two of you have been glued to the hip ever since you met.

~you of course met Addison through Derek and she seemed to take a immediate liking to you. You didn't really have a good home life so Addison didn't hesitate to take you under her wing.

~with the three of you being so close and them helping you through medical school you were certainly crushed when you heard Addie cheated on Derek.

~the night that it happened Derek had came to your apartment. He was emotional mess and not only was he distraught he was angry... And so were you, you would never in a million years think Addison would cheat.

~what hurt more was the fact that she cheated on him with Mark, another close friend.

~you always liked Mark. Yes he's was older but he always treated you like a queen dispite you being strictly friends. Derek always made sure of that.

~“I just need to get out of this damn city”

~“what if you came to Seattle with me? I'm starting the residency program there”

~so that's exactly what you did. He got his trailer out in the woods and you got an apartment about ten minutes away.

~like mentioned before you two are glued to the hip, but there was no way you were gonna live in that cramped trailer with him, no matter how much you loved him.

Your relationship with Derek:

To the unknown people might think you'd two would be a couple... That's far from the truth.

Derek is your Soulmate. He's more than best friend but less than a lover. You've always had each other's backs and he loves you to death.

Derek has always protected you, him and Addie both but Derek seemed to always take it to another level.

You met him through Amilea. It may sound stereotypical but you were getting picked on at a public park near the neighborhood you grew up in. Amilea saw it and got Derek, she was to young to handle it her self so she got Derek. He chased the little punks off and the rest is history.

As Kids you practically lived at the Shepherd's home. Mrs. Shepherd loved you like her own and never made you feel like you did belong.

You had decent relationships with his sisters I guess. Nacy and Kathleen made it clear they didn't care for you too much but Liz and Amilea cared for like crazy, but not as much as Derek did.

Derek is one that inspired you to become a doctor. You would always be fascinated by all his medical books and when he graduated medical school is when you decided to go yourself.

Him and Addison got you threw it all and never gave up on you.

It's the little things that made your bond strong, rather it be listing to your rants about your favorite topics, taking you to concerts even he doesn't like the music, dressing up on Halloween with you, or even taking you to watch every Harry Potter movie when they'd be in theaters.

He got you threw your first heartbreak and he's never confirmed or denied the facted he slashed your Ex's tires after finding out he cheated.

If you want a movie night, done he'll get the popcorn, you want to bast Elvis Presley he'll find all the speakers and dance with you. You had a nightmare, he'll sleep on the floor next your bed in till your not scared anymore.

You may not share the same blood but your his sister no matter what.

Your relationship with Addison:

Addison loves you like a daughter or little sister, there's no doubt about that.

She use to stay that day she met you she automatically new you'd be close.

She thought you most things girls learn from their mother, but since yours past away Addie made sure to take care of you.

She'd do your hair, help you pick out close, taught you how to use make up and was there when you got your first Period.

You wanted to be just like her and she was your biggest inspiration growing up.

She helped you get threw your insecurities and always made sure that you knew how beautiful you are.

She hates it when you talk down on yourself and she wishes you saw what she was and that was pure beauty.

If you say anything decorating about yourself she'll give you a little love tap on the head or shoulder.

You were her maid of honor at hers and Derek's wedding.

Addison was the only one who knew about Mark's feelings for you and she kept it a secret for him. She also told him to stay away from you.

When she slept with Mark she felt that she not only betrayed Derek but she also Betrayed you.

She couldn't bring herself to tell you. She didn't want to lose you.

What it's like being around them now:

You didn't know Addison was coming to Seattle. Everything seemed to be great Derek found a girl that really made him happy and you met this guy Alex.

When you saw her you immediately hugged her. Dispite what she did you really did miss her.

“I missed you Addie, but what are you doing here?”

“I'm here to get Derek back, what I did was unforgettable but I gotta try”

Uh oh...

When they do get back together you could immediately tell it wad a mistake.

It's like when a small child can tell mom and dad don't love each other anymore. You can just tell.

Both of them unintentionally stick you in the middle and use you to get back at each other.

“well tell him I can't do that and that he's an idiot”

“tell her that's not what the patient needs”

It drives you crazy but most of all it hurts.

You could tell Derek's hurting so you don't say anything. You love them both and definitely don't want to choose sides.

What holidays are like with them:

The first Christmas they had back together would have been depressing without you. Derek didn't feel like celebrating anything and Addison would ignore it.

But on the bright side you got a small Christmas tree to put in Derek's trailer and tried to cheer him up. With or without Addison you were gonna give Derek a good Christmas. He deserved it.

With Addison you'd look through magazines and pick out gifts for Mrs. Shepherd and Derek's sister.

Addison will make sure to get you expensive gifts. Some of which she over thought about. As bad as it sounds she unknowingly wanted to out do Derek.

Derek knows you like the back of his hand so he'd get you anything that you loved rather it be something from your favorite show or even one of a kind collectable.

The presents didn't matter you just wanted to have a peaceful Christmas with the both of them... Like how they used to be.

On Christmas eve you decorated the trailer and they came home to a Christmas tree and your puppy eyes begging for a Christmas.

It turned out to be an amazing night. Christmas movies and laughter. Like how it used to be..

If it's Halloween you and Derek will have a horror movie marathon. You two will be laughing at the gore and Addison will be covering her face in fear or disgust.

Thanksgiving is about like Christmas. You'd put something amazing together and you'll have one night of peace.

Mark having a crush on you:

This was just trouble from the start.

If we're being honest Mark loved you since they day you met, but the problem was he was too afraid to admit and derek would have never let it happen.

Mark loves everything about you. He loves how goofy and kind you are. He feel in love with how your eyes sparkl when you talk about something you love and he especially loves your bubbly personality.

Derek could tell. He saw the way he looked at you and it angered him and scared him. He didn't want Mark hurting you.

He thought he loved Addison but in reality he just wanted to prove to himself he could be happy without you. That wasn't true and not only did he hurt his best friend, he hurt you too.

When He came to Seattle he not only wanted to get Derek back, he wanted to get you back to.

Derek didn't trust him and he wanted to make sure Mark stayed far away from you.

At times it was annoying but you understood where Derek was coming from.

The day mark came to visit Seattle-Grace he got a punch in the face by Derek and you had to patch him up.

As you were giving him stitches his steal-blue eyes never left you. He could feel his heart pounding because of how close he was to you.

“I really did miss you N/n”

You didn't know what to feel. You loved his charm and you will admit you missed him. You missed his laugh, smile, even missed the smell of his colone.

You didn't want to get hurt so you pushed him away, but Mark wasn't gonna give up too easily.

He didn't tell Derek how he felt about you because he knew Derek wouldn't stand by it.

Addison on the other hand told him if he hurt you she'd cut his balls off. She just wants you to be happy but if your hurt all hell will break loose.

You kept your relationship a secret for awhile. You told Callie because of how close you were but Derek was in the dark about it.

You hated lying to him but you knew he would never except it. But really he'd just be happy that your happy, that's all he ever wanted for you.

But mark told him to at the wrong time. Derek lost a patient and Mark was determined to tell him.

They got in a fight and you and Meredith had to pull them apart. You felt like you were being towrn apart. You didn't know which side to take.

The night if happened you want to check on Derek after patching Mark up.

You and Meredith got them to work things out and everything seemed to fall into place.

You and Amelia meet in your intern year when she's in town trying to convince Derek to work on an impossible tumor case.

The two of you click nearly instantly, it makes you sad when the two of you part ways.

“I’d love to work under your guidance at some point Doctor Shepherd, might find neuro more interesting if you taught it.”

She gives you a smile at your not-so-subtle attempt at flirting before she leaves for the airport and that’s all you’ll ever get with the prettier (as far as you’re concerned) Doctor Shepherd.

That is until nearly three years later, during your residency when Doctor Amelia Shepherd joins the newly named Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital ranks.

“Well, Dr. (L/N), is my brother still boring as a neuro teacher?” Is the first thing she asks when she runs into you, she remembers you.

Your relationship with her takes off soon after she starts working there. You are working under her guidance, and in all fairness, you do love it.

She doesn’t show you any more favoritism than the other attendings do to their favorites.

She helps you in figuring out what specialty you want to go into, never pressuring you into neuro if it isn’t what you want.

Everyone else just thinks you have a close mentor-mentee relationship.

That is until Meredith catches you sneaking out of Amelia’s bedroom to get a glass of water, wearing nothing but a pair of panties and one of Amelia’s oversized shirts.

She doesn’t even mention it, you didn’t even notice it. Thus, the sneaking around continues.

She is a sucker for teasing you during surgery.

“Well, Dr. (L/N)... You’re always still learning, but I am glad to see you’re skilled at the new things even when you start.”

She loves to hold you, after losing Ryan, it makes her feel much more sure that you’re safe and with her.

You two literally will leave Seattle to go on dates. Not far, just over to Bellevue or Tacoma.

That’s how everyone else figures out that you are dating.

“Where’s Amy?” Derek asks nobody in particular, Alex answers though, “She’s running an errand or something I think, Bellevue.” Derek scoffs, “What the hell? What would she need in Bellevue..?” It doesn’t click for either of the men, that is until Callie walks in and asks, “Where’s (Y/N)? Is she not back from Bellevue yet?” Click. Combined with the weird behavior you’d both exhibited the past few months, it all came together.

Meredith was the one to confirm their suspicions.

“Yeah they’re dating! I honestly don’t know how you didn’t figure it out earlier… She lives with us, Derek!” Meredith does consider chastizing her husband further but the embarrassed look on his face is enough. It quickly becomes the well-known gossip among the residents and attendings, without much effort at all. When the two of you return at as suspicious rate where it seems like you arrived together but staggered your entrances, as to not seem suspicious.

Jo comes to you first, “Are you actually sleeping with She-Shepherd?” You choke on your drink.

“W-What are you talking about, Jo?” You stammer out, “It’s none of your business who I’m sleeping with!” She rolls her eyes, pulling a strand of her hair behind your ear, “I frankly don’t care who you’re sleeping with or even dating, but for your sake and your job’s sake… Don’t pull a Leah Murphy.” You laugh softly, “I’d never do that, Jo.”

Meredith stops Amelia in the hallway before she goes into the attending’s lounge.

“I wouldn’t go in there if I were you…” She warns as Amelia sends her a nervous look, “Why?” Meredith only shakes her head, “Go!” All is good until she runs into Derek later in the day…

“Amy, you can’t sleep with your residents!” She scoffs at her brother’s accusatory tone, “That’s so rich coming from you, Derek. If I remember correctly, your wife was your intern!” 

Safe to say that Derek relented quickly from his attacks on his sister’s relationship.

When the two of you reunite that evening, it’s an all-out snuggle fest with venting and snacks.

All and all, despite your relationship no longer being a secret, it feels much better to be a little more open about your budding and growing relationship.

Six weeks after Derek left to take the NIH job, Meredith is ready to use the holidays to prove she has this working mom thing on lock. Sure, he neglected to tell her he'd be bringing a guest, but whatever, 'Tis the season for truces. Even Ellis Grey took the day off. But with every moment of family togetherness, a return to the trenches seems more impossible. Can a few days of peace put their relationship back on track, or has she fallen for the illusion of a snow-globe, destined to either settle or shatter?

New York Derek. Genetically-engineered for Manhattan, maybe, but it’s not all about genetics. The show never goes into it explicitly, but I think it’s very important that Derek went to Bowdoin for college. At eighteen, he wanted out. I think he came back because of Amelia, and between Mark and Addison, found his life shaped into this Upper East Side, house in the Hamptons lifestyle that he didn’t actually like. The guy with that life isn’t even the one Addison fell for, judging by things like the Chinese food on Thanksgiving. She might’ve felt as out-of-place in the world they would’ve been in if he’d had the self-awareness, or felt allowed to make the choices that would’ve taken them toward a life more like the one her and Meredith get—but it wouldn’t have been as extreme as the trailer.

I go back and forth as to Derek’s desire to have kids, and knowing what happened with Amelia makes a lot of sense in that regard. I know people who were really responsible for their siblings and feel like they had their kids. That said, his dad is his hero, and nothing in his life looks at all like his dad’s life. Kids would change that—but he’s best friends with a guy who had well-off parents who likely had their kid for the wrong reason. He wouldn’t want to do that.

At the beginning, I think a lot of the appeal of his relationship with Meredith is the fresh start. That’s a huge part of their s3/s4 issues. This guy, who clearly adores his family, wants to leave all the past in the past. He can’t do that. After he has to necessitate Meredith, he’s sitting there with Addison and Mark at his sides—exactly like he would’ve been when Amelia OD’d. It’s not a coincidence to me that his mom showing up is part of the arc before his s5 breakdown. But his assertions about his family, about “normal” families, are also pretty rose-colored. Amelia’s arrival on the show is after he’s been offered the D.C. job, but their interactions; that he reminds her of the person he used to want to be—I think that has a lot to do with why he can’t let it go. Also, we���re not two full years out from Mark dying. It’s still one of the longest periods he’s gone through without him.

If anything feels like foreshadowing or a dark joke in this chapter, it is. This whole fic is about how the past affects you, particularly on holidays where tradition rules, this is the chapter with the most allusions to A Christmas Carol. Derek throughout the end of his time in New York is a very Scroogian figure if you ask me—I really should’ve Amed one of my Shepherd kids Fred.

EARLY LIFE,

Being a mere new-born when her father dies, only a few months old and so far apart in age from her other siblings, her mother struggling to cope after her husbands death, Hope falls through the cracks. Carolyn tries her best to provide the infant with everything she needs but everybody struggles with the baby who’s piercing cries seem to invade the shepherd home in an already grief stricken time.

This causes Carolyn struggles to bond with the young girl at such an important time for them both. Later in life Hope would become highly dependant from a young age and becomes somewhat resentful towards her mother and siblings for the lack of relationship she has with them. As a teenager, Hope goes through a highly self destructive phase, almost getting herself kicked out of school, getting into fights, being generally disruptive both at school and home and once even getting herself arrested for shoplifting. It also wasn't uncommon to find her drinking or smoking a joint with a friend, though she never touched anything harder.

This part of her life puts both her mother and siblings through hell which drives them further apart. After this, Hope ends up getting a job at a local bar, just collecting glasses at first and slowly working up to bartending as she gets older. She moves out as soon as she finds the money for a flat deposit. She slowly becomes closer to Amelia as she finds out about her own destructive tendencies, even being younger, wanting to be a support system for her. As Amelia becomes a doctor, Hope begins to look up to her and, by default, Derek, even more and decides that she herself wants to follow that path.

BIOGRAPHY, Being away from her family was lonely, having nobody to turn to or talk to. Hope had always been the black sheep of the family and it's better than being treated as such, of them believing she couldn't change enough to pursue her dreams or perhaps even thinking she's not capable of it. More than anything, she wants to prove to herself and them that she'd good enough, good enough to get in on her own merit and not because of her connections or families money.

Being behind, Hope takes an extra two years of classes after school before putting herself through medical school. Things with her family fall on the quiet side as she does so, working two jobs outside of school just to support herself through it, not wanting to ask her mother for money and wanting to prove to them all she could do it on her own. She later applies for an internship at Seattle Grace, knowing it's one of the best of the country having the likes of Ellis Grey working there in the past. She has no idea that Derek works there, thinking that he was still in New York.

BIOGRAPHY

Mark was born to upper-class, but emotionally distant parents in New York City. While working on a case involving a man's sleepwalking and his daughter's subsequent insomnia, Mark revealed that his own parents would often go out at night, leaving him to care for himself. As a result, he would turn on all the TVs and every light in the house, even those in the closets, but still couldn't sleep.

Later, he revealed that he and Derek Shepherd were childhood friends and when Derek's mother, Carolyn, saw how lonely he was, she encouraged Derek to bring him home. This led Mark to develop a family relationship with the Shepherds, and become like a brother to Derek. When Derek's mother visited, she revealed that a 10-year-old Mark once put Derek's favorite frog into the microwave, to which Mark replied that he never pressed start.

Professionally, Mark was regarded as a very successful and renowned surgeon and one of New York's finest plastic surgeons. Alex Karev referred to him as the "go-to-guy" for plastics on the East Coast, and Richard Webber proposed that the addition of Mark to Seattle Grace's plastics program would double the revenue of other departments. He is skilled at delicate and complex reconstructive procedures, but also performs cosmetic procedures. Of his personal philosophy, he says: "People don't come to me to fix what's on the outside. They come to me to fix what's on the inside."

Shortly before Derek's move to Seattle, Mark and Addison were caught having sex in Derek's bedroom. According to Mark, Derek merely walked out, packed his things, and left. Derek later learned that they continued to see each other after he left. Part of the reason Mark moved to Seattle was to try to continue his relationship with Addison. Addison gave him an ultimatum: If he could go sixty days without sleeping with anyone else, she would consider dating him. However, when Mark saw Addison and Alex Karev coming out of an on-call room together, he realized that they had had sex, and lied to Addison that he had slept with someone to break the 60-day contract. He never revealed to Addison that he caught her.

Shortly after arriving at Seattle Grace, Derek punched him, it is later revealed, while Meredith is cleaning his facial wound, that it was due to his even stronger feelings for Meredith rather than Addison. Meredith and Mark only spoke to each other and Mark got punched, Mark and Addison had sex and Derek simply walked away and did not look back. Mark slept with Addison again before he intended to leave, but he stayed and became the Head of Plastic Surgery.

Mark was in the running for Chief of Surgery, along with Derek, Burke, and Addison. He got a idea from Bailey mentioning the hospital needs a "right now" plan, not a ten-year plan. Richard Webber told the other 3 that the board was eating up the "right now" plan, and suggested that they should do the same.

Mark had a sexual relationship with Callie Torres. Mark started flirting with Erica Hahn, which she rejected. Mark suggested having a threesome between him, Callie, and Erica. Erica said he would be intimidated by her and Callie's relationship, and kissed Callie before stepping off the elevator.

Mark and Lexie Grey started their relationship off with Lexie going to his apartment, taking off her clothes and telling him to "teach her." They then had sex. After that, Mark wanted to resist Lexie because of his promise to Derek but it proved futile. He and Callie tried to make a pact to not sleep with the hot surgical interns, but it falls through. At the end of the day Callie and Mark are side by side at the bar at Joe's. Mark has reservations about Lexie's relative age and inexperience, but more so about breaking his promise to Derek. Especially when Derek is gearing up to propose to Meredith; Mark questions maybe breaking up with Lexie because he can't sleep with any more of Derek's sisters.

When Mark fractures his penis during sex, Lexie comforts him in the aftermath. Mark is initially humiliated and asks Lexie to leave, but after surgery they cuddle. Lexie confronts Mark about keeping their relationship a secret. She's tired of lying to the people close to her and says they need to go public. 

During the hospital shooting, Mark and Lexie were at the nurses' station, where shots were fired by Gary Clark. Mark ran Lexie to the elevator, which had an unconscious and bloody Alex Karev in it. They brought Alex to a conference room, where they treated him until the SWAT team evacuated them.

Shortly after Arizona moved to Africa, Callie started sleeping with Mark. Callie got pregnant with Mark's baby and Mark decided he wanted to be part of this baby's life, because he didn't have the chance with his other daughter, Sloan. When Arizona came back to Seattle Grace Mercy West, she and Callie got into a car accident. Callie was badly injured. She had to have an emergency c-section at 23 weeks. She gave birth to a premature baby and named her Sofia. Sofia and Callie both survived. Mark helped raise Sofia with Callie and Arizona until his death.

In 2012, while traveling to Boise, Idaho to perform a separation surgery of conjoined twins, Mark was in a plane crash. He, along with Meredith, Lexie, Cristina, Arizona, and Derek became stranded in the woods. Mark seemed to have escaped with only minor injuries at first, though after the death of Lexie, he became unresponsive. Cristina examined his chest to find major bruising. Cristina realized that he had a cardiac tamponade, fluid surrounding his heart. Meredith used a tube from a bottle that Derek and Cristina found to drain the fluid. Cristina, Meredith, and Derek were able to get Mark to the front of the plane where Arizona and the pilot were. Mark woke up and told Arizona that Lexie was dead, and that she was waiting for him. Mark tried to tell Arizona he would be okay when he died, but she told him that she, Sofia, and Callie were waiting for him, too.

Mark was airlifted to Idaho, then sedated and moved to Seattle Grace Mercy West. He spent two months declining until he woke up briefly. After that day, he fell into a coma. After thirty days, they turned the life support machines off and Derek and Callie sat with him while he died.
