😭 Dalamar cares so much about all of his friends and they so rarely can see that side of him for what it is! He asked about Tasslehoff and Destina first! Tasslehoff is his tiny troublemaker friend and Dalamar can empathize with Destina and I am just a puddle of tears over here. =')

Right off a semi-non-sequitor strategy game, DL12: Dragons of Faith (1986) gets right into…another mass combat heavy scenario. Hooray. Again, there is a ton of stuff in the package — the module and its folder, a sheet of little tarot cards, die-cut chits for the Battlesystem bits, another big ol’ map. Borderline decadent product design, tbh.
The digression of DL11 aside, this picks up directly from the action of DL10. I don’t honestly know what novel we are mirroring at this point — my recollection of Spring Dawning is spotty, and these modules have never really reflected the novels with any great care. At least part of the action here is still in the tail end of Winter Night. There is a ton of stuff in here that isn’t in the books, for sure. I don’t remember Spring Dawning well, but I am SURE there wasn’t a gigantic underwater battle in it. Conversely, I am pretty sure there are character moments in the novels that aren’t reflected in the module, but I’ve already come to terms with that since Sturm is potentially still alive at the tabletop. At any rate, the game is structured like the previous installments — narrative heavy, with players really navigating a series of events more than a dungeon, city or wilderness. The formula does feel like it has become rather refined at this point (it better be, with nearly 60 events in the chain!) even if I don’t really love how it is brought to bear, if that makes sense.
The little tarot deck is interesting. In a way, it is a regurgitation from I6: Ravenloft: they get drawn and tell the players about specific things that are going on in the game. It’s…OK? I don’t feel like, thematically, they fit very well, but what do I know? They are used in the subsequent modules and, like, become the basis of a whole new game with SAGA System in the late ‘90s (which powered the Dragonlance Fifth Age game and a Marvel Super Heroes game).

426. Gary Gygax - Saga of Old City (1985)
Tumblr media
The first novel set in Greyhawk (well, nominally the second as Andre Norton's Quag Keep already had scenes set in the city of Greyhawk, although it predated the official TSR novels), this would be one of only two official TSR Greyhawk novels written by Gygax. There would be a follow up, Artifact of Evil, in early 1986, but with Gygax exit from the company that year it would be the end of the official TSR Greyhawk novels starring Gord, the Rogue. It wouldn't be the end of the story though, as Gygax would continue to write Gord, the Rogue and publish these novels in his new label, New Infinities. These would consist of three more volumes in 1987 and two more in 1988.
Tumblr media
Greyhawk as an official TSR setting would survive Gygax's exit as would novels set in that world. Rose Estes would pick up on the world and write six more novels after Gygax's exit up to 1989. Then the world would be pretty much dead in terms of fiction up until the 2000 when a couple more novels, adapting adventure modules, mostly, would come out. It would never reach close to the level of popularity of the novels set in Dragonlance or the Forgotten Realms.
Tumblr media
In terms of story Saga of Old City is a good introduction to the Gord character, you follow him from being a young orphan abused by a relative who got saddled with him, and then see him take on an Oliver Twist twist, by becoming a beggar under the control of a Fagin-like Beggarmaster. Later on, freed from beggar bondage Gord develops his thieving skills and eventually becomes a kind of mercenary/adventurer by the time the novel ends. A bildungsroman set in a fantasy world, it isn't that great at characterizing Greyhawk as a setting and it often feels too indebted to Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser to be its own thing. Shockingly enough for an official TSR novel it also has plenty of profanity and amoral actions by the "heroes", something that would eventually disappear with the institution of a more stringent official TSR "code of ethics" in the early 90s. A pity.

Oh hi!
I'm Phyn! I write things. I'm not going to get into a bunch of identity stuff, but I'm queer, I'm an adult, and I like writing queer adult stuff. Mostly horror (see: queer) and absurdity (see: the world)
I have degrees in english, theology, and more theology, which just means I have a bunch of experience doing critical thinking and analysis of storytelling, and enough imposter syndrome that I don't know how to put that on a resume.
FANDOMS!
If you're already following me it's probably for Pillars of Eternity, TMA, or LOTR/Silmarillion. I cycle through hyperfixations every few years. It's still TMA/TMAGP right now. You can find my TMAGP sideblog here, where I just collect art.
Other things I like: Fallen London, everything by Pia Foxhall/not_poignant, re:dracula, SILT VERSES, Rivers of London, Murderbot, Critical Role, Saga, Wicked+Divine, anything by Neil Gaiman, I Am in Eskew, norse myths, egyptian myths, jewish myths, the dragonlance books (don't judge me they were foundational), pretty much everything Mike Flanagan makes, and much much more
WRITING!
I'm on ao3 as Phynoma! What do I write? Well. I write in-depth explorations of characters placed in harrowing situations which draw out the very inmost parts of their vulnerabilities and--
Smut. I write smut, okay?
Almost all of these fics are explicit and PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD mind the tags, I am *very* careful with my tagging for good reason!!!!
HERE YA GO, YA FILTHY ANIMALS!
The Magnus Archives:
I mentioned this is my current fixation, right?
an extant form of life: pollen fic! You could say, maybe, that the Consuming AU uses pollen tropes, but I'm counting this as my first-ever pollen fic. Jon/Tim, Jon/Martin, maybe Jon/Tim/Martin, we'll see if Sasha gets thrown in there. Ongoing.
Hey, Jude: A hurt/comfort fic about what happened after Jon shook Jude Perry's hand. Jon & Georgie & the kindness of strangers (not those strangers) Oneshot.
The Consuming AU: My pride and joy. My baby. I started this halfway through listening to TMA the first time and finished the original fic in about two months in time for the Rusty Quill Big Bang of 2023. Canon is basically the same, with the addition of "what if there was a Entity of Hunger, (fear of) Intimacy, and Codependence?" Also Jon is turning into a succubus. Main fic is complete at a little over 100k words. Sometimes I add one-shots to the series.
~Incredible bookbinding done by @bluejayblueskies HERE ~Art of human-looking Rhia (by me) HERE and commission of eldritch angel Rhia by @isbergillustration HERE ~Commission of Naadia by @dcartcorner HERE
Kittens & Kink AU: Fluffy Somewhere Else one-shots. Cat play. Mostly nonsexual kink. Oliver/Jon/Martin. Ongoing, until I get bored of it, basically.
Pillars of Eternity:
The In-Between Series: A series of fics following the relationship of Watcher Mirad and Aloth Corfiser, ten years or so after the events of Deadfire. The world of Eora is ripe for a new cataclysm, and these two elves are trying to finally have the relationship they've been dancing around for two decades. Ongoing, on hiatus as my hyperfixation is elsewhere. I do plan to finish it, though.
Moments: same universe and characters as above, focusing more on events that happen in canon-- ie, during gameplay. Complete.
Faetales:
Mat & Kal: Fae AU: You know how sometimes you keep writing characters and put them through a blender so many times that they just become something completely new? That's this AU. Mateo and Makalo are two ancient fae beings trapped in the human world during the events of The Ice Plague (by not_poignant) who become bound by each others' lives and deaths. They hate each other, they love each other, they're in weird psychosexual sadistic codependency with each other. They're a cat-person and a snake-person. I'm not a furry but I like some of their ideas, okay? Series complete.
See commissioned art of Mat & Kal by @shojoshark HERE
The Silmarillion:
Mistakes Were Made: Imma be real, this is just straight up torture porn. Sauron is punished by Morgoth after the loss of the Silmaril to Beren & Luthien. Basically, I was annoyed by all the fluffy Angbang fics I was reading and wanted to depict them in all their horrifying, codependent glory. Complete.
Cost of Surrender: I read a really good fic about what it took for Mairon to grovel/debase himself to Eonwe to gain his freedom and I took it a bit further. Complete.
Good Omens:
the beautiful and the fitting: pretty sure the title of this is a quote from St. Augustine, too. I almost didn't include this one because I don't even remember what it's about. Fluffy sex times with nonsexual beings, I think. I started writing it because Good Omens is one of my favorite books, but tbh the fandom for the show exhausts me and I don't know if I'll come back to this. Abandoned, probably.

G and U for the ask game! :)
G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?
I play fast and loose with ships but the first one I was really ride or die for was Rei/Makoto from Sailor Moon. They're not even one of the more popular ships like like Ami/Makoto or Rei/Minako but 12yr old me thought they should kiss and they were right and always will be.
U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
(gonna pick different characters that the last ask)
Raistlin Majere - Dragonlance Saga. This OG probably first started my love of asshole characters. Characters who are fiercely ambitious and hurt because they've been hurt, who trust only themselves because even tho the people who love them try how can you be sure and....omg wait that's just Tegan. hmm. My subconscious must have pulled a fast one there.
Gideon Nav - The Locked Tomb Series. You ever feel like a character was designed just for you? There's nothing I don't love about her from her muscles, her silly personality (despite the horrors) and her terrible, terrible (I approve tho) taste in women. I still haven't gotten around to the second book I can't read.
Ifan Ben-Mezd - Divinity Original Sin 2. The voice. I mean he's a great characters with a lot of good qualities but that voice. 100/10.
Thanks for the ask!

Lately, I've been reading any and all Dragonlance books I can get my hands on, and most recently finished The Second Generation. Having only now started Dragons of Deceit, I was tickled by the apparent difference in the book when it comes to Justarius's opinion on our good friend Dalamar—the dark elf mage that dated his daughter, Jenna.
Take a look at this excerpt of "The Sacrifice", from page 293 of The Second Generation:
If Justarius had sent them, he would have told her first, and she’d had no word from him in months, ever since their last quarrel. He strongly disapproved of her lover.
Compared with page 116 of Dragon of Deceit:
And although Justarius was a Red Robe, a follower of Lunitari, daughter of the god Gilean, and Dalamar was a Black Robe, follower of Nuitari, son of the goddess Takhisis, the two were friends.
...While I understand that these books were published decades apart...It is way more entertaining to pretend that Justarius's issue with his daughter's partner had nothing to do with the normal reasons Dalamar is maligned—Justarius just wants his friend back!
Jenna, please lend your poor father his study buddy back, he misses him!

Of Deities and Fantasy
So I’ve been simmering a new project that ties into my Camp NaNoWriMo project from last year (Signet of the Sea King), but inspired by stuff like the Volsunga Saga and Heimskringla. So it would be in a very different geographic and chronological time than SSK, but some elements would cross over.
And I want it to have that sort of mythic feel barely remembered from the edge of history where deities and humans interacted, clashed, and engaged.
But like- how do people make deities in fantasy? I generally don’t do a ton with them in my fantasy projects, since I focus on smaller things. But I’ve been reading some of the Dragonlance novels and the 5e War of the Lance guidebook. Its whole thing is what happens when gods and mortals find themselves clashing and people have basically come back from the dead multiple times.
What do y’all think? Thematically and tonally, this story is going to be more grim and perilous and wild, I think, with a strong sense of wyrd, revenge, honor, and hope. So lots of value shifting. What’s been useful for your worldbuilding when it comes to deities? I’m a bit stumped and it feels like this is a foundational concept for the story.

What has happened to our happy endings?
It's one of the things I loved about SW. The characters went through hell, but it all worked out in the end.
I'm a depressant. I've earlier mentioned Raistlin Majere, the most memorable character in the Dragonlance games/novels. Much as I loved those books, I had to put them aside eventually because the endings were so...depressing.
And now I've had to walk away from SW for the same reason.
If ever a character deserved a happy ending...it was Ben Solo. Instead, this was given, along with everything else, to Rey PALPATINE.
Some SW fans, much to my surprise - and I admit, my disappointment - are fine with this. They are happy to say goodbye to the Skywalkers and move on with new characters. I would have been okay with that too...
......if Ben had gotten his happy ending.
It would have been great if he had redeemed himself by destroying Palpatine, and started a new life - even better with Rey. I would have been happy for the Skywalker Saga to have ended there and future films being about new characters.
But, to end it how they did...I'm sorry. I can't accept it, and never will.
A lot of fans of Ben and reylo have said DLF have turned SW into a horror story.
For what? Just to promote a tiresome 'women rock' agenda? Leia rocked. Padme rocked.
Rey is a bore. And TROS made her extremely unlikeable. She came across as callous, supercilious and arrogant.
But the real 'horror' was making her a Palpatine.
That is not a happy ending.
I miss happy endings.

412. Douglas Niles - DL9: Dragons of Deceit (1985)
Tumblr media
Not to be confused with the Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman Dragonlance novel of the same name that came out in 2022 and has nothing in common with this, except for the Krynn setting, DL9: Dragons of Deceit is the grand finale to the Second Book of the Dragonlance saga. Again this does not mean that it exactly corresponds to the ending of the second volume of the Chronicles, because it really doesn't, the majority of the events in this module are not really present in the novelization which ends around the finale of DL8: Dragons of War with the great battle at High Clerist Tower (and the death of Strum).
Tumblr media
So, in this module, the party, directed by Silvara/Silvart (the name keeps changing, confusingly), now revealed as D'Argent the Silver Dragon, are led to the city of Sanction in the heart of the Dark Queen Takhisis empire, in order to be able to release the good dragons of the oath not to fight the evil dragons they were forced into. By the end of the module and setting up the third volume of the adventure, the metallic dragons should now be firmly on the side of the party and the real Dragon war can start.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With some cool sections specifically dedicated to D'Argent and to the Solamnic Knight Lord Gunthar, with their backstory to be read by the players (or DM) who will control these important NPCs, it also has some great interior art by Diana Magnuson (as well as the classic Larry Elmore cover). As always full of goodies, such as diagrams for the dragon lances and saddles and so on, it's clearly AD&D's premium adventuremodule series of its day.
