If you like soft ginger cookies you will love these. I made a batch this weekend and introduced my one year old grandson to them. He wolfed them down.
MOLASSES SUGAR COOKIES
Cream together:                      Sift Dry Together:
3/4 cup shortening                  2 cups flour 1 cup sugar                              2 tsp. baking soda 1/4 cup molasses                     1 tsp. cinnamon 1 egg                                        1/2 tsp. each: salt, ground ginger                                                  and ground cloves
*
Stir dry into creamed mixture. Roll into balls. Roll in granulated sugar and place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet.  Bake at 875 degrees for 8 -10 minutes.
Flatten the balls to 1/4 -3/8 inch with a glass dipped in sugar.  Bake.  They will puff up during baking.  Cool for 5 minutes before removing from the cookie sheet to absorbent paper.  Let cool completely.  Store in a tin for soft chewy cookies or a paper sack for crisp cookies.  They usually don't last long enough to worry about storage.

Just experienced such an unusual burst of BBC Merlin fan energy, and after having spent a good portion of my night surrounding myself with young royals content, I can safely ask why more people don’t talk about how Merthur walked so Wilmon could run??? Also. The knights. The knights are stupid and funny and chaotic lil shits, and thinking about them gives me Forest Ridge named first years (literally just Henry, Walter, and Alex) vibes. Blonde royal with dark-haired “commoner” best friends to lovers speed run (I don’t care that I remain delusional over a decade after the Merlin finale was released, they were SOULMATES, two sides of the same coin and all that idc), the queer-magic metaphor in Merlin and how Wille is queer (unlabeled) and Arthur was literally BORN of magic. As in, there is never any confirmation as to whether Arthur could have a talent for learning magic, but being born of it sounds pretty innate to me (something something unlabeled-uncertainty Wille???). And then Simon and Merlin knowing exactly who they are from the moment we meet them (Simon is out to anyone who cares enough to know, Merlin was born with his magic and has used it throughout his childhood). The “commoner” boyfriends being constantly overlooked or disparaged for their lack of status, but their royals (eventually) get to the point where they couldn’t care less about status. Arthur talking about dragging Merlin away to live on a farm away from the royal life —> Wille telling Simon in s2 that he’d give August the crown so they can be together. The royals having a really shit parent who doesn’t want to accept them or change to the country/kingdom. Sad one, but the “commoner” boyfriends sorta losing themselves in the other guy (Merlin losing his innocence so completely because of how much he puts into protecting Arthur vs Simon being Wille’s ONLY support for most of s1 and the only one Wille feels he can really talk to, prior to his and Felice’s friendship developing). Meta one, but the royals’ character development being a goddamn rollercoaster at times, but they’re getting there.
You can’t say that these two shows aren’t so perfectly aligned with each other in so many ways. The queer-magic metaphor alone goes so crazy!!! I love the conversations about heartstopper and rwrb in connection to young royals but give our OG queer-coded royals some time in the spotlight too, it’s super fun!!!

Nick Kay x Salim Othman x Jason Kolchek
1. I read a really good fic with the three and it stuck with me. I just think Salim deserves to be sandwiched between and double teamed by the two marines, lol Also I think it's good for multiple tropes and post HoA events story lines. Nick being jealous of Jason for being with Salim or established relationship between the three where Nick has to deal with once suggesting to leave Salim behind
2. It’s like Jalim, but more love to go around. Like, Nick is so in need of some damn love, and I just don’t think Rachel and/or Eric would cut it. Jason is Nick’s best friend, and Salim and Nick really just needed more development. Nick was the first one to trust Salim, Salim held him from behind with his hand over Nick’s mouth. Nick sacrificed his LIFE for the two, and they can BOTH save him. ‘Oorah’ this and ‘semper fi’ that, I think they’re just gay.
Kate Wilder x Jamie Tiergan (Wildgan)
1. "rivals to lovers" dynamic always gets me and when i started playing TDiM i didn't know a shit about the game at all so i started shipping Wildgan from the beggining because THEM, i love these badass girls. also headcanon that they're exes in pre-canon
2. Their rivalry to begin with already made them amazing to think about but the way that dynamic evolves to reluctantly working together to actual full-blown trust is so... my GOD. That hug they can share before Jamie runs out can bring me to tears tbh.
3. IDK I'm mostly just putting this for my sister. BUT. Enemy's to lovers. They have a really interesting relationship in-game and an interesting past with each other so seeing that develop into a romantic relationship is really interesting.
Becky Marney x Felicity Graves (Gravey)
1. Basically from the moment they meet they're ride or die for each other. When a life or death situation comes up, the first person Becky can call isn't her work partner, but Felicity. Felicity risks everything just to try and prove that Becky is innocent in this case. No matter what, Felicity never stops believing that Becky is innocent. Ultimately, it's their trust ans faith in each other that leads to the best ending.
They're basically canon! Always very friendly to each other, with a few suggestive scenes and dialogue that can be easily interpreted as flirty. They deserve more love :)

Notes on Sara’s initiation costumes
I am allowing myself a few comments of meta before before I begin my Substantial Adulting Task Of The Day.
How we see a character at the beginning of a season and at the end of a season is so indicative of their arc. Costuming plays a role in this, and this morning I’m particularly interested in how it plays out with Sara.
In episode 2.1 of Young Royals, the Manor House girls initiate Sara into their circle. This initiation ceremony includes various costume items, all of which evoke with different archetypes and provide foreshadowing for the group’s eventual split. The girls cover Sara’s face with a witch mask, and have her wear an apron painted with a garishly bright and headless naked body, including prominent pillow breasts. For a portion of the initiation, Sara wears a princess’s tiara—something that is taken back by Fredrika, who anxiously explains about it being a family heirloom.
As we saw with Wilhelm’s initiation, and with initiations of this sort in real life, there is often a stage of the process that involves degradation or humiliation of the initiate before they are fully integrated into the community. The Manor House girls decide to degrade Sara with the breast-apron and the witch mask. Let’s unpack these symbols a little more. The nakedness of the apron speaks to with the idea of being exposed and vulnerable, but also—in this case—has connotations of sexuality and sexual awakening. It’s hard not to think of the way people cut teenage girls and adult women down by slut-shaming them. As for the witch, witches are folkloric outsiders. People of all genders in modern times have reclaimed the label of witch and found the empowering aspects of non-conformity, the same way Sara sometimes tries to empower herself by saying “I don’t need to fit in anyway” especially early on in the series. At the same time, we can’t ignore the way that historical accusations of witchcraft and witch trials have been used to push women out of their communities—especially older women, and women who were experiencing mental illness and neurodivergence. There’s a difference between claiming the role of the witch for oneself, and having it slapped on you as you’re forced out of the place you call home.
What about the tiara? The tiara of course invokes the archetype of the princess, and more broadly the idea of royal women. By joining Manor House, Sara has gotten a chance to “try on” royal status, but she doesn’t get to keep it. Fredrika taking the tiara back shows how quickly the can girls take back their welcoming of Sara, and how conscious they all are of Sara’s outsider status even when she’s passing her initiation with flying colors. (Lighting the banner on fire? Iconic.) I love how layered the symbolism of the tiara is, and how organically it fits into the Hillerska universe. It makes total literal sense that these landed rich kids would bring a family heirloom like that to school, use it for their teenage antics instead of like going to the drug store for bachelorette party supplies or whatever, and then get nervous about breaking it or getting it dirty during aforementioned teenage antics. And yet, the fact that this item has a history in Fredrika’s family shows that there’s a real system of power and wealth and lineage beyond the tiara—a system that works against girls like Sara.
Note that the tiara appears again in 2.5, when the girls are doing their TikTok video. The camera is panning across the dormitory wall when the voice on the video says “Who’s going to be the first to get married?” The camera lingers for a moment on a Polaroid of Sara during her initiation, where she’s wearing the breast-apron and the tiara together. This combination of power (tiara) and reproductive biology (apron) are a glaring reminder that the monarchy’s historic power has relied upon bloodlines to keep it going, and that they’ve used dynastic marriages to secure and maintain those bloodlines. This raises the question: does Sara reinforce that historical pattern with her gender in a way that Simon can’t, or disrupt it with her social class the same way her brother does? The camera cuts away from the photograph and over to the Manor House girls, who push Fredrika forward and she mimes showing off an engagement ring.
(Tangent: I keep wondering if Fredrika’s going to end up in a somewhat significant heterosexual relationship next season. I don’t see it taking over the plot but I can see it being used to develop themes.)
Let’s move ahead to the girls’ falling out and where Sara ends the season. Felice is upset with Sara in a fairly nuanced way; we know what she feels most betrayed by is Sara being in love with August when August did horrible crimes and Sara knew about it. Felice is trying to grapple with the complexity of Sara—she’s seen a side to her that she didn’t know about before and couldn’t have easily predicted. I think it’s fair to say that even if Felice is furious with Sara and feels deceived, she’s still seeing Sara as a human being. She’s just seeing a human being she doesn’t want to be friends with anymore.
Stella and Fredrika, meanwhile, don’t see Sara—they only see the initiation costume. Sara, the witch, is disloyal to Hillerska conformity and should be cast out. Sara, the blatantly naked girl, went and slept with a boy she shouldn’t have. I think it’s worth pointing out that while, yes, August did crimes and Sara knew that, Fredrika and Stella don’t know this part of the story. From their perspective, they are attacking Sara for… *checks notes*… hooking up with a guy that Felice dated last semester and never really cared about?  They’re mad with Sara for being so “naive” as to be “manipulated” by the school’s notorious player (even though Sara did a fair amount of initiating in the relationship and August was infinitely less harassment-inclined toward the other Hillerska girls in season 2?) While, in life, sometimes slut-shaming is really obvious, there are other times where it’s covered up by flimsy excuses. “I’m sex-positive, I just think in this case she should have…” Stella and Fredrika are not making the case for justice or accountability. Again, they don’t know what this has done to Sara’s relationships with Simon and Felice. They’re enjoying the opportunity to tear Sara down and reinforce the values of their insular, elitist community.
This is precisely what makes Stella and Fredrika so interesting to me. Until they clear the air about whatever’s going on between them (we know Stella has unrequited romantic love, but Fredrika’s romantic feelings are unconfirmed, and it’s clear they haven’t had a real conversation about it) they are inclined to lash out at authenticity in others. Their joking about the sex tape and surrogate mothers in 1.6 kinda happens along the same lines. Sara has the authenticity of the witch archetype and allows herself to be emotionally naked/vulnerable in that moment, holding true to her heart even when it’s weaponized against her. This is why her parting line to Stella and Fredrika, about how at least she can be honest about her own feelings, is so satisfying to me. YMMV, of course. But I think it says a lot about who Sara is and what she’s willing to own, even if she takes a while to process a deeply messy situation and let go of what she loves.
(This is also why Maddie can’t be present in the scene. Maddie is chaotically authentic and only follows Hillerska’s rules when she wants to. She’d be chiming in like, ok yeah he’s evil trash but he at least went down on you right?)
To wrap up, I want to address Sara’s final look of the series. The word that comes to mind when I think of her final outfit is “dislocated.” Sara’s left her riding pants behind on the dorm room bed—a symbol of breaking with her friends, and specifically the way they’ve weaponized their wealth against her. As she leaves Hillerska’s grounds with her rolling suitcase, she’s wearing her skirt and blouse, but not her blazer and tie. She’s still somewhat attached to the school, but not in the way where she’s wearing their logo anymore. She also wears her purple shirt, reminding us of Simon’s infamous purple clothing accents, and I think we’re supposed to see this as her thoughts being partially with her brother and the home she grew up in. While Sara begins the season in caught up in a jumble of archetypes, she ends the season in a different kind of liminal space: between two worlds, but not really anchored in either of them. This makes me wonder where Sara will end up in season 3 physically. We’ve all assumed she is going back to Linda, but it may be that she tries something really unexpected, like moving in with her dad or trying to make it on her own now that she’s eighteen. Both of those things make me worry for her.
Sara’s future home is another issue entirely, so I’ll bring this back around to character arcs. There’s themes going on in season 2 about how people can get pigeonholed into certain fairy tale archetypes, and a lot those themes get reinforced through costuming choices. At the end of the season, we’re being asked to see Sara as a person—her sparkle and flaws all as once, just as she is.
BONUS COSTUMING NOTE: did you notice that Sara is predominantly dressed in white during the Valentines ball scene, while Felice is predominantly dressed in black? Please note that this is the episode where August begins scheming again and in the episodes that follow we see him lurking around the chess board in the common room and talking to the other third years about how to win chess and stuff. My point is, FELICE AND SARA ARE THE CHESS QUEENS THIS SEASON. I THINK IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE ON PURPOSE. I love the way this show makes me think!

Sara & The Girls
One thing I love about season 2 is that we see that, when it really comes down to it, the girls like Sara. Outside of just Felice bringing her around, they really genuinely like Sara.
Madison gives up her room for her. She gives Sara crystals to ward off "bad vibes," she loans her clothes, and does her hair. She sits with her at meals and explains things to her. Fredrika, albeit a bit ditzy, tries to connect with her over the fact that she’s a “real virgin” and she thinks it’s cool to have one in the group. And then she offers to let Sara help with her horse Indigo, despite the fact that she doesn’t need extra assistance, just because she knows how devastated Sara must be about losing Rousseau. Fredrika even makes the effort to tell Sara not to listen or take Stella seriously when Stella is messing with her about the nudes. Early in the season we see Sara wearing one of Stella’s sweaters and the later in the season we see that Stella goes after her when she’s clearly upset about the horse thing. Stella also feels comfortable enough to tell Sara about what's going on with her and Fredrika. She could have left it at "you can't tell anyone," but she didn't. Stella chose to elaborate and trust Sara with the information that she loves Fredrika, that she's scared of what it means, that she doesn't want to ruin the friendship that they have.
The girls consistently throughout the season try to teach her about life at Hillerska both as a higher class citizen and just as a teenage girl - they talk to her about meeting the Queen but they also talk to her about sending nudes, making tik toks, and the Valentines Traditions that fall somewhere between the two worlds. They explain things to her, they tease her, they look out for her. They buy her a thoughtful birthday present, they try to make sure she’s comfortable with her initiation, they have spa nights, they walk with her to classes and sit with her in classes.
As soon as Sara broke “girl code” they all turned on her, sure, but even outside of Felice bringing her around, the girls just like Sara. They want her around. They turned on her because Felice was obviously hurting. They know Felice, they trust Felice, and if Felice is telling them Sara is a bad person, they're going to believe her. They've known her a lot longer. That doesn't take away from the fact that they did like having Sara around.
And that opens up an even bigger hole for Sara, because she hurt Simon and she hurt Felice, but she also just lost the trust of all of her friends - the first friends she’s ever made that genuinely like her.

DAY 3 | It Takes Two (3/6)
Nina: Yeah, a little too late to be repentant now, Tucker: Tori's already booked to fly home tomorrow because of your little in the moment decision. But we'll get to you in a second. Over by the pool, Joey checks in with Manny about whether he's got a shot at capturing her affections this summer. From what I can tell, that's about to be a bit of an uphill battle for him. Though it looks like he's willing to put in the effort to prove that he's got what it takes to be Manny's main man! Not too far away, Tucker and Felicity talk romantic goals, to which Tucker seems to be less than interested in sharing, much to Fe's displeasure. I know we always say this isn't Friend Island, but Tucker probably would have been much better off saving Tori than putting himself in his worse case scenario. Eh, I'm sure he'll survive.
Next, we have one more couple to check in on as we zoom upstairs to the dressing rooms!

Beginning | Island Schedule | Previous | Next
Manny: So, what did you want to talk about?
Joey: Oh, nothing in particular.
Manny: Seriously? Then why the urgency?
Joey: Uh, well, I guess there was one thing. I thought we were clicking pretty well, you and I, even before today’s challenge. But you don’t seem too enthused over being coupled up with me. Guess I’m just a little confused.
Manny: Well, I would have thought that you would have at least asked me if I wanted to couple up with you before you decided for yourself. That would have been nice.
Joey: [chuckles] Alright, maybe I jumped the gun a bit, but can you blame me? Anyone would be a fool to pass up a beauty like you. And I’m not in the business of making a fool out of myself.
Manny: Uh-huh. Well, word of advice for next time: I’m not in the business of being someone’s conquest.
Manny: [in the DR] Tonight was shaping up to be a real win for me after everything that happened today, and now this. Joey really chose the worst time to go rogue. I know ultimately it doesn’t change too much for me: I’m still free to go and explore some other connections in the Villa. But it really sucks not being with who I really had my eye on.
Joey: Next time? Does that mean I should be expecting this little arrangement to go on for a while?
Manny: Not even a little bit.
Manny: Look, you’re a fun guy, Joey. I’ll admit we have some good back and forth conversation-wise. For that reason alone, I’ll let you shoot your shot. But to be clear, I won’t be closing off any other people from getting to know me. So you better be ready to step up to the competition.
Joey: Hear you loud and clear! And don’t you worry - I intend to sweep you off your feet.
Joey: [in the DR] I’d say I haven’t done too bad for myself tonight! I traded in a controlling redhead for a sexy blonde, and so far, I couldn’t be happier. Manny might be playing a little hard to get right now, but I’m sure it won’t take too much to make her realize just how good we are together. As far as I’m concerned, what competition is there really against me?
---------------------------
Felicity: So! I already have an idea of what your career goals are, but tell me what it is you’re looking for here in the Villa. A future heiress to your culinary empire?
Tucker: [chuckles nervously] Not exactly. I’m not too concerned about my future girlfriend being that involved in my work. I think it’s healthy to have a little separation. I wouldn’t say that I have that many “expectations,” really. It all comes down to whether or not the chemistry is there between us. Everything else is just extra after that.
Felicity: Ahhh, I see. I sorta agree with you to an extent. I’ve definitely got my list of “must-haves,” but if a guy were to check off all my boxes but we had zero compatibility, there’s no way we’d last.
Felicity: [in the DR] I’m absolutely buzzing over the recoupling! I knew I had a pretty good shot from the get go, but nothing beats actually hearing Tucker call my name in front of everyone. And I must admit, it was satisfying seeing Manny stuck with my leftovers. [laughs] I just can’t wait to find out so much more about Tucker! He feels like the exact type of guy I’ve been searching for!
Felicity: So would you say I’m your usual type?
Tucker: I wouldn’t say I have a “type.” Like I said, it all comes down to the vibe. Felicity: Aw, come on. Physically you have to have a preference.
Tucker: Not at all. I consider what’s on the inside more important. But, I actually was hoping we could cut this short. I was hoping to pull a couple other people aside before turning in for the night.
Felicity: Uh, don’t you think that’s a little rude? We just coupled up. Before this morning, I hadn’t gotten any alone time with you, and you want to spend that time talking to other people?
Tucker: [sigh] Felicity, I’m not trying to be rude. I just--
Felicity: Just what?
Tucker: …You’re right. I…I can always have my other chats tomorrow.
Felicity: Perfect! I knew you would understand! Now, back to your dating history… Tucker: [in the DR] You don’t have to tell me how stupid a move this was. In the moment, I thought it would be better to not recouple with Tori since I wasn’t feeling anything more than friendship. But compared to Felicity, I would much prefer to still be partnered up with Tori right now. Fe’s the exact type of girl I don’t deal with. How the fuck am I gonna play this one off?
