A Mother’s Dream - Channa Mereya
Usually I find the “dream” of parents getting their kids married off as irritating. But in Channa Mereya Gulabo Ji’s dream of seeing her daughter married is beyond the traditional fixation of “marrying off kids”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it hits me in the feelz because it’s a point of view we don’t think.
The househelp might hope for a splendid new year when they clean up the mess. The nanny might dream for the biggest cake for their own child when the kid they look after gets a birthday surprise. The janitor at airports may also dream of flying a thousand miles away. And it’s our privilege if these things don’t feel like massive dreams. The fact that Gulabo simply stood for a moment at the wedding of a woman who’s as old as her daughter.
Tumblr media
For a moment Gulabo Ji sees Ginni at her happiest - dressed in jewels and fine fabrics.
Tumblr media
For a moment she realized that’s where her daughter should be. Not slaving behind a kitchen... but sitting pretty, celebrations in her name.
And when everyone starts clapping, she’s back to the moment where she’s not a mother happy for her child, nay, she’s simply a server holding sherbets in a tray.
Tumblr media
The pang of realizing where you and circumstances might’ve failed someone where they’re not living the best a person can at that age.
It’s really beyond “marriage”.
You see, Ginni has no aversion to marriage. She hasn’t been able to simply marry because she bears the responsibility of her household. She does not live for herself. Her mother knows this, and despite breaking her back to make the restaurant work she knows that they’ll pretty much slave their lives around it with Ginni’s own dreams unfulfilled.
It’s not that Ginni has any dream of being married.
Ginni simply has no dreams. She cannot afford to dream.
For Gulabo Ji, she doesn’t see Ginni not being married as a problem. Rather, the fond dream stems from the pain that her father’s death and the financial strain has kept Ginni behind from living her life.
I ended up crying when Gulabo Ji is serving sherbet to the guests at a wedding and sees her own daughter in place of the bride. A beautiful dream of Ginni, her wedding, enjoying being served and cared for.
But in reality, all her daughter is doing is running door to door scraping for money when she deserves so much more.
Just how frequently do we keep forgetting that the people who help us also have lives, dreams and families?
Sigh, I’m emotional again.

Instead of apologizing for liking "trashy" media, consider: what is it doing well? If you like it, if it's making you feel pleasure and interest, then it must be succeeding at something. Is it shaping a set of emotional beats that you find satisfying to watch play out? Did it craft a character you find really compelling? Is something in the styling and aesthetics speaking to you? Did it unexpectedly resonate with a mood or experience you needed to see reflected right then?
However shallow or flawed a piece of media is, if you like it, it's because of something it did well - at least well enough to affect you, on the day that you encountered it.
There are a lot of good reasons to acknowledge this. One is about gratitude and manners: someone worked hard on that thing, and if they provided something that gave you happiness and pleasure, it's nice to honor that. Another is about breaking down the insidious habit of sorting everything into simple good/bad boxes. A piece of media, like a person, can do a lot of things wrong and a lot of things right, and the things on one side do not magically erase the other.
But the most important reason, I believe, is to get in the habit of celebrating what brings you pleasure and happiness. All your life there have been and there will be people telling you that you find joy in the wrong things, that if a particular thing makes you feel good it shows that there's something wrong with you. I reject that utterly. If a particular thing makes you feel good then there's something right, about you and about that thing. I'm not saying that pleasure is the only important thing or that every pleasure should be indulged indiscriminately. All I'm saying is that pleasure is in and of itself a good thing, and deserves notice.

Channa Mereya Liveblog | E2: "Kal Jo Tera Tha, Aaj Woh Mera Hai, Kal Kisi Aur Ka Hoga”
Tumblr media
The line above is from a terribly funny comedy film called All The Best where two people, struggling over the same property, say “what was yours, is now mine, and will be someone else’s in the future”.
And trust me, this episode, nay this whole show is literally that.
We just have to imagine that Ginni is:
Tumblr media
And Adi is:
Tumblr media
And omg... I even found Goldie, he’s:
Tumblr media
Wait a minute, is Channa Mereya nothing but a show inspired by Dhondu’s Dilemma from All The Best? *cry*
Please watch the clip below:
youtube
So... *cough* coming back to the show, let’s now resume watching Channa Mereya - with the blessings of OG LB Queen @tellywoodtrash and the persistence of @aye-masakalii
Episode 2: "Kal Jo Tera Tha, Aaj Woh Mera Hai, Kal Kisi Aur Ka Hoga
Tumblr media
Going on a more analytical side, it is interesting how the whole competition is literally about control.
Tumblr media
Really yaar I want Ambar’s skincare regime. Yeh toh age of Adeline ki tarha atak gaya.
Tumblr media
Yaar ITV has enmity towards every Tayi, Mami, Chachi - kabhi toh Taya, Mama ya Chacha ko bhi villain banao yaar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Is it just me or did anyone else think that we got to see Daarji, Ambar and Adi constipation face?  Like that is the face when you’re not able to poop, sorry.
In short, this really is the summary of Adi and his father’s relationship. Which is how abusive relationships work - it’s all about control. And the literal struggle Ambar is having without his control because he uses control to show masculinity. Tbh, good competition selection. You can feel it in your bones that Ambar feels a drop of masculinity cause he isn’t able to control his son.
And of course, Adi wins - otherwise hero banne ka kya fayda? But it’s also a good way to represent that the control has shifted in the house. The point being, how much toxicity can Adi escape from showing with him having the power of his house?

Closeted Harry coming out to Ron after his breakup with Ginny and Ron just being like, “cool just don’t date one of my brothers”
Fred and George freezing and looking at Harry with nothing but absolute delight at the potential mischief.
Harry making eye contact with them, immediately understanding their intentions, and winking as he puts a finger to his lips, shushing them.
Ron following Harry’s line of sight and screaming “NO. NO. FUCK NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT.”
Harry and the twins platonically flirting in the most obnoxious ways imaginable.
Harry showing up to breakfast in the Great Hall late with a different twins sweater on, looking debauched. One or even both the twins give him a salacious once over. Ron wants to sink into the floor and die.
Ron eventually gets used to this but absolutely loses it when the rest of his brothers send him their sweaters and flirt with him at the Burrow.
The Weasley boys sending flirty howlers to Harry just to send Ron spiraling.
Ron being so relieved when Harry dates literally anyone who isn’t one of his older brothers.
