—————
[y/n] entered the halls of the school, she was met with a bunch of people just rushing to their first class. they were conducting a tardy sweep, a tardy sweep was basically catching whomever that was roaming the halls, bathroom, theater room, or just about anywhere in and outside of the school. although she didn’t hear anything on the intercom, she tried stopping a few people question and asking ‘what was going on.’ but they would give her freaked out facial expressions, or point.
she stomped her feet and then found nini running from being with e.j, woah they’re back together? after he stole her phone?
reaching her hand out to stop nini, she went around it and was gone before [y/n] could follow behind. same with e.j, she frowned and started to jog a bit. she was getting scared, she checked every door which were locked. tardy sweeps! oh fuck!
she thought to herself, biting her bottom lip, she looked down the hall, trying to figure where could she hide and not be found. [y/n] cut down to a corner, and huffed, i guess i’d have to get caught and get detention.
someone grabbed her wrist, jerking her into a classroom, when she looked it was a few of her friends, gina, ashlyn, carlos, seb and the rest of the crew in the play. with miss jenn sitting at the desk that was in the classroom.
-
my phone vibrated in my pocket and i pulled it out, it was a message from gina. i read it, ‘miss jenn saved us, and nini texted saying you were in the halls.’
nodding my head slowly, i checked the time as well, i was able to take these clay models and the cotton ball out of my ears pretty soon, which hopefully it’ll be by lunch when i receive that text.
another message but this time it was a group chat, involving ashlyn, gina, seb, nini, big red, ej, kourtney, and ricky.
gulping after seeing that name i for sure wasn’t going to speak much in this group chat, ricky was in it. i didn’t have any hatred for the boy, it was just his snobby attitude. we’ve crossed paths before, and he sure wasn’t sweet as nini and gina described him or protrayed him.
‘are we all up for a party at ashlyn’s?’ i read, it was from seb. immediately people were replying, except me. if ricky was to go, i wouldn’t want to go. a party doesn’t need drama involved, yes it do, ya big dummy!
i made up my mind and not answer the group chat, carlos walked up towards me, waving. he learned a little bit of sign language off of me, cause i’m the best like duh.
‘what’s wrong?’ he frowned, sitting on the desk that i was standing at. i shook my head, just sighing. instantly he asked, ‘is it because of ricky? girl fuck him.’ cue an eye roll from him, and him showing off his middle finger. i playfully nudge him, cracking a wide smile at him.
as that the tardy sweeps were done, only a few were caught this time, better than the other times. first, second and third class went by like a breeze. it was now lunch, and kourtney was begging me to sit with her since nini wanted to be with e.j.
not even knowing my phone was going off, gina came behind kourtney and i, and slipped my phone out of my back pocket giving it to me. i noticed the flashing lights, straight away i answered the phone, it was more of a video call.
it was my doctor, the call was pretty much fast and short, i was able to take out these things, and clean my ears.
first i got my lunch, and we found a table. i excused myself for a minute, walking down the bathroom, i turned the corner and my body collided into another’s.
“what’s up, mute kid?” of course i couldn’t really hear ricky, i started taking out the cotton balls. “aww, did your surgery not work? still fucking trying?” he joked, leaning his back onto the lockers.
i read his lips, and my fist connected to his lip. his lip was now leaking, i backed away when miss jenn came out of her office. “you two! let’s go!” taking a grip of our wrist, she pulled us to her office. i sat on the other side of the room, while ricky took the other.
while miss jenn was finishing up whatever work she was handling, i manage to clean out my ears. i waited for my ears to adjust from being clogged up with cotton balls and that clay. i opened my fanny pack, pulling out my hearing aids, switching new batteries as well.
“now why did you punch him miss. [y/l/n]?” her eyes were now on me, even rickys. “it’s him! he’s been fucking with me for a while now, and he can’t help but bother me all of the time!”
well if isn’t good to hear!
“bullshit, she’s a liar. i don’t even worry about this girl, she’s always being a clumsy mute girl. not my fault!” i went to leap over to him, and he was up and ready for whatever mess that was coming for him, but miss jenn was quick to step in the middle.
“STOP IT!” she screamed, i relaxed and turned the other way. “you know what, i should be sending you to the principles office, but you know you two don’t need detention especially if you’re wanting to get into those colleges!” she was serious, never been seen this way much.
“now, ricky since we have this whole play going on, and you can’t dance, [y/n] here will help you. and please do not deny that you can’t dance, i’ve seen you in the gym with gina.” miss jenn turned her head to the side, she seriously wasn’t playing.
“what?! no! you can assign me with nini, that’s why i’m in the play?!” ricky threw his hands up in the air, “not like she wants to get back with you, mister i can’t say i love you.” i rolled my eyes, folding my arms.
“miss. i’m so mute!” he argued back, i looked at him quickly, before storming out. miss jenn faced ricky, “ricky, that’s not nice. imagine if you had a sibling and she or he was being bullied..”
ricky frowned, but was quick to recover that facial expression. “you need to go and apologize. if you’re willing to win back nini, you need to fix you attitude.” and with that she walked off.

Part II of my analysing the above scene from High School Musical 2. (Part I is here).  Apologies in advance for the poor video quality: I got this from YouTube. The full video is available from Google Play or in DVD format.
Having watched this scene yesterday and again today, I have some new observations on the various problems with Gabriella’s behaviour throughout. The last observation I made was that Ryan Evans had no problem with Troy chasing this scholarship opportunity, as it was clear from Mr. Evans’ high praise that he had earned it.
“Oh yeah, they’re awesome! Playing with them is like being in another world.”
I had a previous post on this comment, but my computer froze before I could post it, so I lost everything. However, I do recall noting on this scene that the Redhawks had gone out of their way to welcome Troy. They invited him to scrimmage shortly after they met (without even watching Troy play first), listened to his tutorial on holding a golf club, gave him one of their jackets, and gave him a free ride to their gym.
The film wants you to believe that these men help Troy get too big for his britches. Does the evidence support this? Notice that while Troy appears starstruck at meeting U of A players, they don’t bask in the praise. In fact, the first player is impressed that Troy has watched them play, and senses that he takes basketball seriously. Hence the immediate invitation for scrimmage.
Yet just because Gabriella takes objection to Troy calling them, “the guys”, we’re to dismiss these men who take their profession seriously and play at an advanced level altogether. Gabriella ironically belittles them, calling them “all those tall people”. I invite the audience to decide who is really the snob here. As far as I can see, these Redhawks have shown themselves to be polite, friendly, and generous.
What’s “another world” for Troy? We don’t know. I can only assume that, based on their practice, Troy is more part of the team, rather than the one being pressured to deliver (as when he plays with the Wildcats). But that is just an assumption.
Of course, Gabriella won’t pass on any compliments to Troy, even though by an impartial source, he is doing very well. Instead, she says:
“Well, you missed out on a fun night...”
So her priorities here are 1)- attention on her (hence dancing with Ryan); 2)- Troy only making friends she approves of (she takes no interest in the Redhawks); 3)- having fun right now (telling Troy that he “missed out”). Then she giggles with Ryan to underline how she has moved on emotionally.
To recap: Gabriella has ignored Troy’s call(s), treated Ryan as a new Wildcat, invested herself emotionally in Ryan, refused to apologise for missing Troy’s calls (which implies she ignored those calls), visibly shows more interest in Ryan (looking up at him while he passes on Mr. Evans’ compliment, but not Troy), and uses subtle hints to show that Troy is “missing out”.
Remember these things, because the general consensus in the comments’ sections for HSM II videos is that Troy is at fault. I again invite the audience, armed with the above facts, to consider that-- particularly given Troy’s visible jealousy and upset with the above behaviour.
“But the dessert afterwards had to be the best part. Her mom makes the best brownies in the entire world--”
“Yeah, I know: I’ve had ‘em.”
I think I have noted before how Gabriella did not see fit to invite Troy to her mother’s house, even if he had missed the baseball game (or even dessert). We know this, because Troy tried calling her to let her know that he was stuck at the gym. As I have fairly demonstrated, Gabriella ignored that call, because she only stared at him coldly when he mentioned it.
As must be evident, Gabriella wishes to emphasise to Troy that he has been left behind. This is punishment for his “failing” to meet previous commitments and for appearing close to Sharpay. Many, if not most viewers take Gabriella’s side here, even though Troy did his utmost to explain on several occasions precisely why he had missed arrangements with his friends.
Consequently, Troy cuts off Ryan, leaving an embarrassed silence as the latter eventually admits that things are troubled between the couple. He makes a quick exit, and who can blame him?
I have just realised that Gabriella never defended Ryan after Troy cut him off. Taken in isolation, this is a rude action from Troy, and if Gabriella had discovered Ryan’s true worth, now was her chance to step in. But she remains silent, leaving Ryan to stand around in an awkward silence and then leave, no doubt feeling as though he did something wrong.
(We know this, because later on, he waits for Troy to address him personally before speaking.)
Ultimately, as much as Gabriella does like Ryan, he was a tool to help her inflict emotional punishment on Troy. I think I have fairly demonstrated this, and I call upon anyone who feels that Troy was at fault to prove otherwise. The resulting cold silence between the two after Ryan has left more than proves this, with Gabriella refusing to even move an inch to bridge the gap between them or explain her feelings.
The most I can say for Gabriella by the end is that she does appear remorseful after he has left: we can see her face change a little. This is consistent with HSM I, where she looks wistful standing alone at home, after having ignored Troy. But the other consistent theme here is Gabriella’s refusal to explain those feelings. I have far fewer problems with her behaviour in HSM I, but come the summer, she defaults back on the same fault: freezing Troy out-- and this time, replacing him with someone else.
So here’s an honest question. How come Troy has to apologise to everyone and his mother for losing sight of his friends and his commitments, while Gabriella, who used Ryan, quit the show and had to be dragged back, is treated as though she was right all along?
For me, Troy undoubtedly had his faults in this movie. But Gabriella’s behaviour here is indefensible. Troy had explained himself time and time again. She didn’t have to agree with or like those explanations, but it would have cost her nothing to listen, let alone give him the benefit of the doubt. Yet she behaved as though Troy had betrayed her, when all he did was put his future first so his parents could worry less about college costs.
While I have no problem with characters having serious faults, and I do not like PC stuffed into film-writing, I still have to say that HSM II sends an atrocious message to its intended audience.

After analysing how Gabriella Montez used Ryan Evans to punish her boyfriend, Troy Bolton (Part I; Part II), let’s examine the cumulative effect of this behaviour (including Chad’s shouting match and the Wildcats leaving him behind in rehearsals) on Troy.
According to Mr. Bolton, Troy has been in his room “the last 3 or 4 days”. As we can see, he throws a ball aimlessly, totally dejected. We then learn that even if Troy tried calling “the guys” to “get the game going”, they would just ignore him. This shows that they were, in fact, ignoring him even before the infamous kitchen scene.
Troy isn’t just upset and lonely: he now questions his entire existence. Why? Because everyone else, from his girlfriend to his team, claims he has changed. As they are the majority, and people whose opinions matter deeply to Troy, he crumbles under their collective criticism and hostility, assuming that he is at fault.
Never mind that Troy’s concern for his parents’ worrying about college costs drove him to take responsibility and seek financial independence through earning enough money and chasing a scholarship. Never mind that Taylor helped poison Gabriella’s mind against him just because Sharpay was pressuring Troy to perform in the Talent show.
Never mind his blatant discomfort with Sharpay’s behaviour throughout the entirety of this film.
Never mind the fact that his girlfriend cosied up to Ryan in order to punish him (and never apologised). Never mind the fact that he had earned Mr. Evans’ approval through hard work. Never mind that the Redhawks liked and respected him. Never mind that his father said he should keep his eye on the prize, as the Wildcats won’t last forever.
Troy never considers any of these inconvenient facts, instead ruminating on Chad’s claim that “if I don’t know who you are these days, then who does?” and Gabriella’s claim that “it seems like a new Troy”, not to mention the mockery and coldness of Zeke (who owes his confession about baking to Troy signing up for the Talent Show), Jason, and others.
“Maybe my friends are right-- maybe I’m turning into a jerk with new shoes.”
On analysing Troy’s word choices, I hold out hope that by using the word “maybe”, this implies that he had tried defending his actions. We have good evidence of this from his argument with Chad, in which he stated plainly that he was offered opportunities and he showed up to work the same as everyone else.
Furthermore, he pleaded with Gabriella that he was just working on the scholarship and that he meant everything he had said. (As usual, she dismissed him entirely and asserted without evidence that he had only meant this “at the time”.)
Unfortunately, that deliberation is won over by the near condemnation of his friends and girlfriend.
Notice that Troy never criticised his new shoes until Gabriella mocked them. In the above dialogue, he misses out the adjective “Italian”-- for good reason, I think. Now that fact embarrasses him.
Mr. Bolton is now filled with concern, rightly pointing out, “New shoes, not a new kid, where’s this coming from?”
Earlier, Mr. Bolton warned Troy to keep his eyes on the prize: getting a scholarship. He also said that his son should never be ashamed of promotions if he had earned them (as he had). This once again undermines the claim that Troy became too big for his boots, since the idea of being served by Jason and Chad embarrassed him.
Mr. Bolton thought Troy had taken this advice to heart, and proudly told Mr. Evans that Troy always gave “110%, that you can count on.” As far as he was concerned, Troy was putting his future first. That means Mr. Bolton never saw Troy as ditching his friends. The opinions of Troy’s father must surely carry more weight than those of his friends and girlfriend.
Yet Troy ignores this, because he wants to escape his father’s shadow and because he cares more about being liked than being right.
“I’ve been so focused on my future: Gabriella quit, Chad won’t talk to me, I don’t see the Wildcats running around here...”
Yet more evidence that Troy blames himself, despite the evidence painting a different picture. Gabriella was supposed to be angry at Sharpay, but then blamed Troy and left entirely, despite claiming that she needed a job and despite making Troy promise they would be together all summer. Troy makes it sound as though it is his fault that Gabriella quit because “I’ve been so focused on my future.”
Ditto for Chad, also supposed to be angry with Sharpay’s interference, but letting his jealousy against Troy burst free like water through a dam. As far as Troy is concerned, that is his fault, too. Ditto for the Wildcats refusing to visit the house.
Mr. Bolton, again rightly, says that the scholarship “is only a big deal if it makes sense to you.” Despite Mr. Bolton’s regrettable flaw of projecting onto his son, he does care deeply for his wellbeing (far more so than the Wildcats) and only acts out of love and concern for his son. Since they share a bond over basketball, he has every reason to believe that this opportunity makes sense to Troy.
But it’s too late. Troy already has his back to his father, probably not even registering this advice. Chad, Gabriella, etc. have all won, leading him to conclude that, “I don’t even know who I am, anymore.” Of course, he knew full well who he was when he commendably argued against Chad earlier. But as soon as Chad brought up the “brothers” and “pre-school”, and “I don’t even know who you are”, he broke.
Simply put: Troy “doesn’t know” himself because his friends and his girlfriend told him this, not because it’s unquestionably true. As I already showed, several people have not made any such comment: Mr & Mrs. Bolton, Mr & Mrs. Evans, Ryan Evans, the Redhawks, Kelsi Nielsen-- even Sharpay hasn’t claimed that he is changing. Later on, she realises that he is “a good guy”, which ironically undermines all previous claims to the contrary!
Mr. Bolton tries, as only he can, to lift Troy’s spirits. Troy’s expression here indicates that he has heard this talk beforehand. Mr. Bolton’s advice here is that Troy will “figure out the right thing to do”. But he has just heard Troy confess that he doesn’t know himself, so how can that be the case?
Once again, Mr. Bolton is so close, yet still so far. He doesn’t dig deeper. Notice that he has not criticised Chad or the Wildcats for ignoring his son to the point where he hides inside his bedroom and refuses to eat. Neither has he criticised Gabriella for quitting, evidently leaving Troy distressed and alone. I understand perfectly that Mr. Bolton is trying to empower his son to make the right decisions, but he didn’t witness any of the scenes between Troy and the other Wildcats. Had he done so, perhaps he would have had some different advice.
Troy cannot make the right decisions at this point, because he genuinely believes he has lost himself over a scholarship. Despite all evidence to the contrary, he blames himself for everything.
Meanwhile, none of the Wildcats are ever shown in such confusion and upset, neither do they ever apologise for their treatment of Troy.
I leave the audience to decide who is truly in the wrong here.
