#I also really like that high collar look (plus it being protective which is plot relevant)

Tell me again how *Jason* was the angry, violent Robin.
(This is in no way a knock on Steph, to be clear, I adore her (obviously). But Fanon Jason bears a striking resemblance to Canon Steph sometimes, just saying.)

5.26 and 6.1 - Time’s Arrow
Oh my god. Y’all. It’s a new Fashion It So post. In the year of our Picard 2020. Yes.
For literal years, Charlie and I have been like UGH WE NEED TO DO TIME’S ARROW PARTS 1 AND 2 BUT IT’S JUST SUCH A MONSTER.
Well, I’m doing a complete rewatch of the series with my partner and we just got to these two, so IT IS TIME.
We open in a cave in San Francisco, where Data and Picard are checking something out:
Tumblr media
Rent for the cave is $6,000 per month
Showing them around is this guy in a Science Outfit:
Tumblr media
He’s ready to go night biking
We’ve seen this look before in both Silicon Avatar and Devil’s Due, and it’s functional, yet cute. Basically a windbreaker in jumpsuit form.
They find a couple of items in the cave, including a pocket watch from 1889 and also:
Tumblr media
I left my head in San Francisco
IT’S DATA’S HEAD!!! And it’s been there for FIVE HUNDRED YEARS. What could have caused this? And why is Data’s head so absolutely terrifying?
Tumblr media
Is that fondant
This head is, in a word, haunting. The 2020 of heads.
Data and Geordi chat in Ten-Forward about what the presence of Data’s head in the cave means. Data says it means he’s mortal; that someday he will die, and that’s comforting. Spoiler alert: that’s not what it means. But it’s a nice conversation.
Also, Guinan is here!!!
Tumblr media
Merlot My God!!
Or maybe: Burgundy-lightful!! Or perhaps: De-Crimson-alize Sex Work!! Okay that last one was a stretch but I really think I missed my calling as a nail polish shade namer.
Anyway, she’s here in her classic look of a pizza-sized hat and a flowing gown/coat/top/robe. The collar here is a little too close to a mock turtleneck for my liking and honestly - this is a little staid for our friend Guinan. I want a TEXTURE or a SWEEP or some WIDE RIBBING or some PLEATS. Don’t worry, though...she will get plenty more later.
Then there’s some plot which frankly we DO NOT HAVE TIME to get into but let’s just say: the away team goes to a planet, there’s a temporal disturbance, and Data ends up here:
Tumblr media
Huge mood
Where are we? Or should I say WHEN are we??
Tumblr media
Well that old-timey font is a good clue...also the horse
Are we in the Old West land of an off-brand Disneyworld? Are we going to ride something called Large Lightning Mesa Train Tracks? What colorful characters will we meet here?
Tumblr media
Winner of 1893’s Mustache Medal
This type of ‘stache is called a Fu Manchu, after the character Dr. Fu Manchu. It’s not...a great look? But it is memorable, which is sometimes enough. He’s also wearing a simple black cap, probably made of silk. He’s keeping it cazh.
So where are we?
Tumblr media
SAN FRANCISCO, OPEN YOUR GOLDEN GATE / YOU’LL LET NOBODY WAIT / OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR
Yes, it’s San Francisco. And it’s *eyes popping out of head like a cartoon wolf seeing a busty babe* 1893!!!! That temporal disturbance was...disturbing.
So who else do we have hanging out?
Tumblr media
Please check out our Vaudeville act, Knit Cap ‘n’ Bowly
These dudes understand those famous Bay Area MICROCLIMATES, amirite? We’ve got a Henley. We’ve got a buttondown. We’ve got a vest. We’ve got a coat. No matter which way the thermometer decides to go, THEY ARE READY. Also loving the pop of forest green on Knit Cap’s knit cap.
We also have a 49er:
Tumblr media
No, it’s not Steve Young. I googled “famous 49ers” to complete this joke so if there is a more famous 49er please let me know
It’s a literal 49er. Since it’s 1893, this guy’s been hanging around in town for a while, and he’s also familiar with the layering techniques one must master if one is to conquer the Bay Area’s climate. He also has a kicky Colonel Sanders-type tie. He asks Data for money and gives him a few panhandling tips. He’s chill. We like him. But don’t get too attached if you know what I mean!!!!
Data decides he needs somewhere to stay, so he finds a hotel:
Tumblr media
Brian.
Why is this so funny to me. Brian. Why would you name your hotel Brian. Brian!!!! I know it’s a last name but like...Brian. HOTEL BRIAN.
This bellhop’s name is not Brian:
Tumblr media
Where’s your hat, bro
He’s giving us a classic bellhop look, complete with too many buttons. He gives Data the very important information that there’s a poker game happening in the back of the hotel, which means: Data is about to be RICH rich.
The poker game includes a few good looks:
Tumblr media
Louie Anderson IS Wolverine IN a Lands’ End barn coat
Tumblr media
Two plaids? Sir...I salute you
Tumblr media
Colonel Sanders Goes to Carnaval
Data, of course, wipes the floor with them so hard that he wins their clothes:
Tumblr media
Didn’t get that barn coat tho
Yes, that’s the actual vest and the actual hat of those guys from the previous scene. Oh, I love it. I love Data in a vest over his uniform and I love Data with a feather in his cap. Let’s call it macaroni.
Meanwhile, out on the street, the plot is happening:
Tumblr media
Beige: inescapable
This is our first taste of the decadent 1890’s sleeves that appear in this episode, and these aren’t even the best sleeves!! These are an amuse-bouche of sleeves. An armuse-bouche, if you will.
Anyway, these two are aliens disguised as humans who are here to steal the 49er’s life energy.
Tumblr media
Pew pew pew
Tumblr media
I told you not to get attached!!!
Back on the Enterprise, Guinan is doing mixology:
Tumblr media
She would never call it something as stupid as mixology though
She tells Picard that he needs to go check out the temporal disturbance, too, even though captains don’t normally go on away missions, and then she gives him this look:
Tumblr media
It’s that serious
When Guinan looks at you like this, you do what she says.
Now this outfit is much better than the earlier one. We have some pleated sleeves, which I didn’t even think was a thing you could DO. We have some sort of functional(?) strap(??) across the front. We even have matching fingerless gloves which always make a look A LOOK. And if Picard wasn’t sure whether he needed to go on this away mission, she then gives him THIS look:
Tumblr media
Okay now it’s REALLY serious
Back in 1893, Data is making something:
Tumblr media
It’s actually just a really complicated and large music box that plays “I Left My Head in San Francisco”
He’s gotten his hands on some more period-appropriate clothing, including a bow tie and a vest. Since he’s not wearing arm garters and his sleeves appear to be the correct length for his arms, we can conclude that the shirt was custom-made, not ready-made, because Data is now a baller due to his poker earnings.
Then, Data sees this in the paper:
Tumblr media
I know her!! From work!!!!
Yes, it’s Guinan. In 1893. In a hat!!!!
We cut to the literary reception, which is honestly not as well-attended as I thought it would be, considering it got a GIANT photo of Guinan on page THREE of the paper, but okay. And who should we spy there but:
Tumblr media
You’ll love my secret blend of 11 herbs and spices
No, it’s not Colonel Sanders. (Sorry, I really have Colonel Sanders on the brain because of that Lifetime movie.) It’s Samuel Clements, AKA Mark Twain. I had an English teacher in high school who explained the origin of his pseudonym (it indicates a mark of two fathoms, aka twelve feet, on a steamboat) and for some reason she shouted MAAAARK TWAAAAAIN when she told us that story so now her delivery of that line is in my head until I die I guess.
Anyway, it’s Mark Twain.
He’s wearing his iconic white linen suit with a black bow tie, and he’s also wearing a lot of prosthetics, because the actor playing him (Jerry Hardin, AKA Deep Throat from The X-Files AKA Melora Hardin AKA Jan Levinson-Gould’s dad) (was that too many AKAs) (you get it, right?) didn’t look enough like Mark Twain, I guess? In conclusion: what if eyebrow wigs were a thing?
Twain is having a chit chat with “Madame Guinan,” who is wearing what can only be called a sumptuous gown:
Tumblr media
It’s 11:30 and the gown is sumptin’ sumptin’
There are so many ELEMENTS to this look! First of all: the color. Royal purple. Fit for a queen. Appropriate.
Then: those sleeves! These sleeves are known as “leg of mutton sleeves” because they KIND OF look like a leg of mutton. Have you ever seen a leg of mutton? I haven’t. I’ve only seen these sleeves. Plus they have a stripe?? No, I don’t know why, but I LOVE IT.
The cuffs and the cravat bring this from “dress” to “lewk.” Top it all off with this hat and you have a true 1893 mood.
Tumblr media
What bird is that feather even from
We get a few good extra looks in this scene as well:
Tumblr media
Pink Lady is NOT wearing a corset
Look, sometimes you don’t have enough period-appropriate undergarments for all the background people and that’s fine. But I WILL notice.
Tumblr media
Is that Loretta Lynn
I am loving all of this! That purple dress is fantastic, those stripes? I die. Military man has some fun flair on his shoulder, and there is a dude in a beautiful turban back there. Plus, another Black lady in addition to Guinan and That One Ensign Who Is On The Bridge Sometimes.
Data rolls in to the literary event in a different suit with a CRAVAT:
Tumblr media
Craving a cravat
Data is like “we serve together on the same starship in the 24th century” and Guinan is like “huh” but then she’s like “okay” which...I’m not sure if I would believe that? But let’s just say it’s fine.
Over in the 24th century, the literal entire bridge crew is checking out the temporal disturbance and I DON’T LIKE THIS AT ALL:
Tumblr media
Blue Man Group...on ACID
These beings are like ghosts but also like Dr. Manhattan but also like pure energy.
Then everyone goes through the temporal disturbance AND THE SEASON ENDS.
Tumblr media
Fortunately for you, this post will continue...right now.
Okay, so we’re back in San Francisco in 1893. You can tell by the horses:
Tumblr media
Also the fruit carts
Samuel Clemens is strolling around with a reporter, telling him that he has a great story for him that involves time travelers and, like, protecting the nation.
Here’s the thing about this episode’s version of Mark Twain: he’s kind of a dick. Was the real Mark Twain kind of a dick? I just feel like Mark Twain should be JAZZED about meeting time travelers and not acting like a fuckin’ time cop* and trying to put the Enterprise crew on blast.
Anyway I love his double-breasted vest.
Tumblr media
See my vest
The reporter’s hat is technically period-accurate, but that style is SO associated with the 1930s-1950s that I would have gone with something else. He looks cute though.
Meanwhile, Data is wearing a three-piece suit:
Tumblr media
My positronic olfactory synapses are interpreting something as...a fart
I hate brown, but this is fine.
Additionally, the beige baddies from before are back and this time, they’ve got a SNAKE CANE:
Tumblr media
Love the snake cane, hate how they suck the life out of people
But we are not here for them, we are here to see our faves in period clothing. Our first look is at Riker, who is dressed as an actual cop, not a time cop like Mark Twain:
Tumblr media
The past just had...so many buttons
I guess if you’re a time-traveling white man there are worse disguises than a cop. But WHERE DID HE GET THIS UNIFORM? I choose to believe that he found a cop with a similar large handsome body to his own and beat the shit out of him and stole his clothes. Now we can all enjoy imagining a cop being beat up.
The badge that Riker is wearing is a great historical detail; the SFPD started wearing them in 1886 and are reportedly the first law enforcement agency to have worn the seven-pointed star, which is now a common shape among sheriff’s departments across the United States.
But let’s move on to a better look: Dr. Beverly Crusher:
Tumblr media
Curlz MT
Okay, now I have more questions. Beverly obviously wouldn’t beat someone up for their clothes, so where did SHE get HER outfit? And who did her hair? Did she do her OWN hair? Where did she get a curling iron? Does she know how to use a curling iron? Was it one of those ones that’s actually made of iron that you have to heat up in a fireplace?
We will get answers to zero (0) of these questions.
We actually get a much better look at her dress later, so let’s focus on that cloak!!! I love it and I also love her hat. Okay, I guess I had less to say about those than I thought.
Bev and Will, along with the rest of the officers, have somehow procured a room/apartment in some lady’s lodging house. It’s cute!
Tumblr media
They gave it 5 stars on AirBnB
This also raises questions. How did they get this room? How many bedrooms does it have? Are they sharing one large bed? If so, who has to sleep crossways at the foot of the bed and why is it Geordi? We will get zero answers to these questions as well, so let’s move on to arguably the hottest costume in this two-parter:
Tumblr media
I’ll be in Holodeck 4
Whewwwwwww. He’s giving us a rolled sleeve. He’s giving us a casual tweed vest. The pants? They’re perfect. And he KNOWS how that slouch is working. It’s working VERY well. But the Irish landlady? She’s having NONE OF IT.
Tumblr media
Absolutely NO nonsense
She needs the rent, but Picard charms her and she leaves. So I guess that’s how they got the room. Her look is knitwear-forward:
Tumblr media
Eileen Fisher does sound like an Irish name
She’s got a shawl AND a cardigan! The cozy factor is OFF THE CHARTS. She also has a brooch, because a touch of fancy is always welcome. I will say that her hair is a little more fashion-forward than I’d expect for a woman of her age and station. This is straight up 1890s hair, and she would probably still be rocking an 1860s look, which isn’t as sweepy and would likely involve more braids. Still, she looks lovely.
Geordi is also here looking dapper:
Tumblr media
Make the collar as high as you can. I want to be sliced open by my own collar
You CAN go wrong with a three-piece suit, but it’s difficult to. He can’t wear his visor, so he has some kicky shades which we’ll get a better look at in a sec.
Back at the Hotel Brian (lol), the bellboy (who we learn in this scene is Jack London, inspired to be a writer by Mark Twain [citation needed]) lets Mark Twain into Data’s room and allows him to look around unsupervised. This is very bad hotel management.
Tumblr media
Great Scott
Then Data and Guinan show back up, and Mark Twain hides in an armoire.
Tumblr media
One short day in the emerald brocade
I think one reason I love Guinan’s looks so much, both in the 24th and the 19th century, is that our color palette is very similar. We’re both winters. Bold jewel tones are the vibe. This one is in a beautiful deep green fabric with what looks like a velvet flocking pattern on it. The collar is also velvet, and I love that sleeve with a flounce on top like there wasn’t already enough fucking fabric on the sleeve so they just added a random piece to be like “yes, bitch. I’m a sleeve.”
Naturally, the hat is also jaunty af:
Tumblr media
San Francisco’s hottest milliner is: Madame Guinan
This hat has everything: feathers, netting, a brim, an angle that makes you think it’s going to fall off but it doesn’t. We stan.
Meanwhile, Picard is setting up a sensor in a hospital while wearing a hat:
Tumblr media
I’m bowled over
We haven’t even asked where Picard got these clothes, but I would like to point out that he’s dressed as a lower-class guy, while Riker is a cop, and Geordi looks like a gentleman. Was there even a discussion they all had about how they would disguise themselves? Was Picard like “I just really want to wear a beat-up bowler hat” and since he’s the captain, they extrapolated from there? This episode is NOT CONCERNED about any of this. They all have clothes, end of story.
Bev even has TWO outfits!!
Tumblr media
Hello nurse!!!!
I love this look. She still has her unlikely hairstyle happening, which means her nurse’s cap is sitting atop her voluminous hairstyle. (Not very practical, but realistic!) She’s sporting a simple striped dress and a button-on apron. (Look closely and you can see the two buttons holding the apron to the dress.) The fabric underneath might be cotton seersucker, but it’s likely a lightweight cotton or linen twill. You can see how closely her look matches these nurses from a similar time period:
Tumblr media
Hello nurses!!!!
Deanna is also in this scene and this episode, but you wouldn’t know it from what she’s given to do. HUGE SHOCKER: TROI NOT GIVEN ENOUGH TO DO IN AN EPISODE. 🙃
She still looks beautiful:
Tumblr media
Why aren’t capelets more popular
We never get a really GREAT look at her whole outfit, but I can tell you that it has a capelet, it’s in the red family, and the hat has a lot of business going on. For those reasons: approved. It has a flounce in the back too:
Tumblr media
More fabric = more wealth
Sometimes I think about just how much fabric it took to make these old-timey dresses and I’m like...how did anyone get anything done?? It takes me like 4 weeks to finish a pair of leggings and those have like 5 seams and I own a serger. These historical bitches were sewing whole ass dresses in no time at all.
Okay, so Bev is in this hospital and here come some more energy-stealing aliens, disguised as healthcare professionals this time:
Tumblr media
I cannot take a medical professional wearing a LIGHT BROWN TOP HAT seriously, sorry
Bev AND this energy-stealing alien have BOTH managed to get their hands on the SAME nurse’s uniform?? I guess in the case of the alien, she is a shape-shifter, so she got her clothes from...that. And her hair.
I hate this light brown top hat. If you’re going to wear a top hat, don’t DISRESPECT IT by making it BROWN, but if you’re going to make it brown, make it a good brown, like chocolate. Stupid energy-stealing aliens.
There’s a skirmish, the energy-stealing aliens disappear, and the real cops show up:
Tumblr media
MOUSTACHE
Of course, the cops showing up is bad, because when has a cop showing up ever made a bad situation better? Never. Defund the police, but don’t defund handlebar mustaches. Those can stay.
Fortunately, Data has gotten a ping on that machine he was building before and shows up on a motherfucking HORSE:
Tumblr media
Brent just wanted to show off
He’s back in his brown striped suit and red tie. Okay.
Everyone returns to the boarding house to suss out the situation, and we get a look at what Riker is rocking underneath his cop jacket:
Tumblr media
Suspend me daddy
You can see very clearly here how the collar is not actually attached to the shirt. This was a thing people in the olden days did so they could wear their shirt for multiple days in a row and just switch out the collar and cuffs so they looked clean. As someone who is wearing the same sweatshirt for the third day in a row, I support this method. (If you’re interested on more info about collars, here is a very enjoyable article about them.)
We are also blessed with a better look at Deanna’s sleeves and bodice:
Tumblr media
Black lace cuffs? Decadent!!!
You can also see Geordi’s shades, which suit him really nicely. One thing I’ve been enjoying on this rewatch is just how well LeVar Burton can act without having his eyes visible. He’s great. Let’s just all think about how great LeVar Burton is for a second
Tumblr media
And also Bev’s dress:
Tumblr media
I legitimately want this dress
I don’t think those buttons are functional. Can you imagine how annoying THAT would be? But I am absolutely in love with this dress. Two paisleys, Beverly???? A goddess. I’m also dying for that brooch with the chain. A+ look all around, great work.
Finally, FINALLY, Guinan meets the rest of the crew:
Tumblr media
When you meet someone you won’t actually know for 500 years
She is wearing a hat that looks like a toilet paper cozy. Did your grandma have one of these? They’re so stupid and I love them so much.
Picard and Guinan meet for what is the first time for her, but not the first time for him, and honestly it is...sensual?????
Tumblr media
If I got a m’lady from P. Stew I wouldn’t even mind
Patrick and Whoopi truly do some nice work in this ep. But we are here to yell about clothes, so: LOOK AT THIS DRESS ON AN EXTRA:
Tumblr media
Gimme dat dress
I just want that dress to wear around my house. I legitimately bought an 18th century costume dress to do just that, so don’t think I won’t literally do this.
OKAY, WE ARE ALMOST TO THE END.
The crew, plus Guinan, go back to the cave where this all started:
Tumblr media
Cave Club, the only club that meets in a cave
We get a nice look at the bodice of Guinan’s dress here and guess what: MORE BUTTONS. Buttons on the lapels, and also buttons on the front panel with the pointy top. I wonder if she has multiple front panels for that dress in different colors, like a Swatch watch.
Unbeknownst to them, Mark Twain followed them!! Then there’s a scuffle with the energy-stealing aliens during which a few things happen:
Data’s head flies off
Mark Twain gets sucked into the temporal disturbance
Guinan gets hurt
Picard stays behind to make sure Guinan is okay
So we end up with Mark Twain on the Enterprise, where he sees Worf, and he’s like:
Tumblr media
Buh-WHAT
Worf is also confused:
Tumblr media
This is...extremely perplexing
We have a few more looks back on the Enterprise, including Regular Guinan:
Tumblr media
ShoulderSpreads™: The Bed Spread for Your Shoulders
I love love LOVE this outfit. The color is perfect, the shoulderspreads are perfect, the front draping is perfect. It looks like a velvet housedress from the 1960s except FANCY which is kind of my ideal aesthetic. And it’s red (my fave).
We get a quick glimpse at the barber uniform:
Tumblr media
Bitch let me pass, idc if you wrote Huck Finn
This barber does. not. give. a. fuck!!!!
Geordi reattaches Data’s head, the one they already had, which means this whole thing was a ding dang closed loop. The reattachment also kind of diminishes the whole conversation they had earlier about how Data’s head in the cave meant that Data could die someday, because...he didn’t. He still might, but his head is back and he’s fine now.
Meanwhile, Picard is still back in 1893 and they have to go get him, but only one person can come back through the temporal disturbance, so Mark Twain is like “duh I’ll go get him.”
And finally Guinan and Picard can talk about how their friendship spans 500 years!!!!
Tumblr media
Hey girl
Tumblr media
Hey
YOU’RE WELCOME

some updated designs!! lots to say about these!!
Emilia and Mateo’s “Imaginary” Designs
I have a plot update for them ;w; I thought, since their whole motif is arts and performance, that it would be cute to write in a playground roleplay element to their story! Besically as kids, they make up a fantasy world that they play in together whenever they get a free second! In off-time, Mateo writes stories and makes art of their characters, and Emilia starts learning to play music so that she can compose theme songs for them. Emilia’s character is a fire witch who’s able to comfortably use her powers bc they live in a more magical world. Mateo’s character is a healer who follows Emilia on her quests to save the places she defends. I thought it would be a nice place to kick off their obsessions with creativity, and also that it would be kinda fun to do a plot within a plot and kinda try to make up a story that two kids would.
These outfts are the designs they thought up in their game. Mateo later drew up the designs, this being most obvious from the rose on Emilia’s belt. Her gloves keep her magic in when she doesn’t need it, and the cloak is fireproof. Mateo’s outfit is based on a plague doctor’s, but for ease, the mask is just a piece of thick fabric that can be lifted up over his nose when he needs it. The rest of his body is covered to prevent him from contracting infections from fluids.
Holly and Masei
Nothing too new about these designs, their original designs were just way too simplistic bc i didn’t have much of an idea. Holly is a warrior, so his outfit is very lacking in layers and fabric. On the other hand, Masei is a prince, so his clothes are dumb layered and the little translucent piece is supposed to drive home just how extravagant he is.
Khauai, Haven, and Hakeem
I wanted their outfits to be more like their animal motifs! Cevon didn’t get a redesign because his current outfit is civilian clothes which. suits the fact that he gets his power taken away. Khauai is an owl, so his cloak is meant to reflect his wings and the puffy pants + slim boots mimic the legs of an owl. Haven is a selkie, so I gave him his seal coat to wear over his human form. I left the sweater, though, since it kinda melds both worlds for him as opposed to him only wearing his seal coat and Yearning for the Sea. Hakeem’s outfit is supposed to be lionlike, so I gave him the furry collar to be the mane and the furry boots to be his paws. It’s also a little more form-fitting bc he steals Cevon’s powers and as such becomes an incubus. I think he’d embrace that fully.
The Major Arcana
These characters have 3 things each that are part of their designs: an album, a Tarot card, and their name. I decided that the Tarot card would be more involved witht heir demeanour and how they present themselves, so the outfits are based on their album and their name.
Crow, obviously, is named for a crow. His clothing is layered to represent the feathers of a bird’s wing, and his cloak is ruffled to be shaped like the wings themselves. His album is After Hours. His heavy layers also represent him often blocking people out because he feels like he’ll just let them all down (a la Save Your Tears). At the same time, his outer cloak is open, because what he really wants is to be better, but it’s hard to make that go to the inner layers of himself (a la Faith). His clothes are all black.
Harley’s name means “meadow of hares.” His spikey hair is meant to represent windswept grass, while his inner vest is meant to be a little white bunny tumby and his boots are white at the toes to represent paws. His album is Beauty Behind the Madness. BBTM is a little sluttier than AH, so I had to kinda work around that, since Major Arcana generally wear old-fashioned clothing and lots of layers. Underneath his jacket, Harley’s arms are bare and his jeans are high-waisted so that when he’s free to do so, he can shift into hotboy mode. BBTM’s narration is also more smug and more detached, so I felt like that it made sense to give Harley a more modern outfit than everyone else, because he couldn’t care less about the customs of Major Arcana dress or how anyone feels about it. His clothes are brown and white.
Nakoa’s name means “warrior.” I gave him the harnesses on his back and leg to look like he’d be carrying weapons around, even though he never would. His album is Transmissions. The ablum gives off a very aching, yearning vibe, with the narrator sounding alone throughout the whole thing. His mission seems to be to find and protect someone else, while sticking staunchly to one’s ideals and values throughout the quest. Nakoa dresses like Major Arcana should, with his clothes being the most traditional of anyone’s. The lock necklace represents his loyalty to the Major Arcana (as in, he’s locked in) and the heart necklace (while in canon it represents his card: The Lovers), represents the person that the album’s narrator is talking about. I wanted to make him look very “tied up” in his clothes, so everything runs across him. This represents the loneliness at the album’s core; Nakoa is tied up in himself and effectively has no one but the cause to be loyal to. His clothes are purple and blue.
Sunday’s outfit is supposed to contrast Nakoa’s heavily. They don’t wear all of the ties and layers he does. Their design is meant to be open and welcoming, because their album is Dreamland. The narrator of Dreamland describes a troubled past in an expressive and upbeat way, and I thought I’d reflect that in the fact that Sunday is the eldest and effectively the most responsible for the whole group, yet they remain open and their layers stripped despite all that. Their name obviously reflects the sun, so the main colours of their outfit along w the sun at their collar represent the sunrise. Their outfit is iridescent (another ref to Dreamland’s aes), with bases of pale pink and yellow.
Arwen’s name means “royal maiden.” Her outfit is based on the most practical layer of mediaeval royal clothing, with her hood able to pull up to look like a victorian maiden’s bonnet. Her album is Hozier, but I’m going to be hinest and say most of her outfit was designed before this, so I couldn’t find a place to mix in the album..? So the colours of her clothing are the album cover’s colours: orange, blue, and brown.
Elio means sun. I have enough characters designed after the sun, so I went entirely album-based with him. His album is DIVISIONS, a rebellious, anticapitalist love letter to no one. The album is about adventure, love, and the future, so I wanted to give Elio a v futuristic and punky outfit. His outfit is my favourite out of all of them, but I don’t actually have much to say about it? I think it looks exactly how I envisioned, like Elio’s a punk from the future. His clothes are black, white, and silver.
Dawn’s name meaning is obvious, and again w the sun. I went all-album with him too. His album is Meteora, an album that’s essentially about hating yourself, your past, and everyone around you. I wanted to go more emo with Dawn’s design bc of that, but emo style actually doesn’t... appeal to me, plus it’s not very Major Arcana. I gave him some gay little boots to be his choice piece of emo clothing, and then emo’d up a regular outfit instead. His clothes are layered, again representing him building up walls. He has lots of elements that are tied around him, this time to look like he’s sealed himself in, hence them all being horizontal. He burned the edges of his cloak himself and also sliced into his pants so that he looked imperfect and everyone around him would know that he’s imperfect. His clothes are, in contrast, pink, yellow, and blue.
Dovey’s name obviously means dove. Her cloak, like Crow’s is ruffled at the edge to represent bird wings. Doves are much fluffier than crows, though, so in her outfit, feathers are represented by the ruffles in her dress. Now, uh, her album is Wasteland, Baby! and the outfit very much misses the vibe. Dovey is another character whose outfit I had planned before hand, and it wasn’t desidned with music in mind. The one song I did think of while designing her was As It Was, which reminds me of Red Riding Hood bc of the way it opens?? I feel like even though I can’t pinpoint any one vibe that matches her look, I can see her as the narrator slash star of all the songs in this outfit. So IDK, it vibes w me, fjkdshdsfd. Her outfit is grey and brown, like a mourning dove.

The night went by nicely; dreamlessly for you both. Unbeknownst to you, Jeongin had crept in around five in the morning and snapped a picture of the older snuggling into you.
Sadly, your morning wouldn’t be so peaceful.
‘What the fuck?!’
All three residents of the apartment were forced awake by the sound of Chris slamming the door open and barking out the question. Of course, it was directed to you and your closeness to Minho.
‘I left for two days,’ he began, ‘two days, Y/n, and I come back to you in bed with Minho? The one person I told you to stay away from?’ You’d never seen your brother as angry as he was, basically fuming.
Before you had the time to respond, the older was being yanked from your bed by the collar of his shirt, being slammed into the wall. ‘I don’t know what you get from doing this, but you need to stay the fuck away from Y/n. Do you understand? Whatever happened here will never happen again.’
Minho just groaned and tilted his head. ‘Y/n came to me last night. Maybe you should have a little more trust in your sibling.’
The words earned him a punch in the face which resulted in a bleeding lip, much to your distaste.
‘It’s eight in the morning,’ Jeongin hissed as he entered the room, ruffling up pale blonde locks. ‘They didn’t do anything, so can you stop acting all tough?’
Everyone looked towards the youngest and Chris rolled his eyes, but let the male go. ‘Bullshit they didn’t. Do you remember who this is? The boy that fucks anything that walks- whether they want to or not,’ the words came out venomous. ‘Did he force you into anything?’
‘Oh my god, Chris,’ you rubbed your face, basically stomping to the small kitchen to get some ice, ‘We didn’t do anything. He didn’t do anything. He’s right, I found him last night. I brought him home. I pulled him into my bed.’ Moving back to them, you stepped to gently clean the blood from Minho’s chin, then carefully set the ice against his lip.
‘Y/n-’
‘Shut up, you don’t get to speak right now.’ Glancing over your shoulder at your brother, you narrowed your eyes, ignoring the hurt and disbelief in his own.
‘I’m angry that you think I would just hop into bed with someone, for one. For two, do you remember when Jisung found you behind school? Crying because no one wanted to be friends with the weird foreign kid? He listened and befriended you when no one else would. Did you ever ask Minho about what you heard? Did you ever listen to his side of the story? No. You believed what everyone else said and I was so stupid for doing the same.. but he needed someone last night and I wasn’t going to just leave him at Jisung’s party. He didn’t do anything wrong.. but you’re too much of a jackass to know that because you didn’t try to ask your own damn roommate. Now, get out.’
Your attention turned back to Minho, who frowned at you softly. ‘Y/n.. It’s not that big of a deal.. I should go,’ he mumbled and moved to step away, only for you to push him back against the wall, tending to his lip.
Chris was silent, watching you for a moment before taking his steps to leave, closing the door behind him.
‘Is he alright?’ Jeongin spoke up, bringing over the small first aid kit; when he went to get it, you had no idea. You accepted it, pulling out a small tube of ointment.
‘Just a busted lip,’ you answered, looking at the brunette with soft eyes. ‘You aren’t going anywhere. I’m sorry about him..’ You applied some of the substance to his lip, apologizing when he flinched under the touch.
Watching from his spot, the blonde chewed on his inner cheek. ‘Why don’t we go out for breakfast? We’re all awake and if I don’t get something to eat soon, I’m going to be sick.’
You looked up at the oldest. ‘You wanna go?’
Minho raised a brow before nudging you with a playful smile. ‘Our first date? As much as I'd love to, going out really isn't the most ideal thing in the world right now. You guys go, I'll probably head.. back to the.. dorm,' he mumbled the last part slowly, clearly thinking of what will happen once he returns. He was positive Chris wouldn't be in the mood to see him.
'Why don't you stay here for a bit? Chris isn't going to be too welcoming. He gets overly protective.. I wasn't allowed to study with Y/n for more than fifteen minutes without him checking on us,' Jeongin snorted, moving to drop his arm around your shoulders, 'Plus, I have this feeling you're more wanted here. Felix and I can go pick up some of your stuff if you want?'
You had kind of spaced the words out at the 'first date' comment, feeling your face flush slightly only to come back to reality a moment later, watching Minho show a smile to the younger. 'Alright, but I'm going with you, I can't just send you in there to do my dirty work, what kind of person would I be? We can go later, you go enjoy your breakfast.'
'Breakfast date and we will,' came a new voice that earned everyone's attention. You didn't expect to turn and see Felix drying his hair, showing a bright smile.
Your eyebrow went up, looking at the youngest by your side in silent question. 'Oh yeah, we're dating now,' he mused with a shy smile, heading to his room stopping only to drop a kiss to the Aussie's temple.
'Soooo... You and Minho?' He questioned, settling himself on the couch and gesturing between you. You felt your words get caught in your throat and your face burn once more, wanting nothing but to shove the boy over.
'Y/n is just helping me out.'
Felix looked from your face to the older's, not believing that one bit, but he didn't say anything else, just sank back into the couch. Clearing your throat, you turned and looked towards the brunette, 'Do- do you want me to make you some breakfast? Since you don't feel like going out?'
'Aw, so our first date can be us cooking together instead?' He cooed teasingly, earning a pinch to his side.
'Shut up.. Just cause I let you sleep in my bed doesn't mean you get to ask me on dates,' you huffed, albeit playfully, though much to the amusement of the blonde on the couch. You ignored him, walking off to change.
'Take care of Y/n,' Felix began softly, looking towards the older, 'I know you wouldn't purposely hurt anyone.. but you'd have way too many people against you if you did, Minho. Chris, Jeongin, Hyunjin, myself.. We would all probably skin you alive.'
The brunette chuckled weakly. 'Thanks, Fe, I appreciate your support, but we aren't anything. We just met fully last night.. I don't think you need to worry about any of that, okay? Y/n knows the truth and likes being around me.. I'm just happy about that.' He wanted to continue but bit back any further comments when you came back, stretching your arms. Only a few seconds later did Jeongin come back, though just long enough to say goodbye and pull his new boyfriend out for breakfast.
'Guess our first date isn't happening,' you commented, letting him know you'd caught his words from earlier as you started searching through your cabinets and fridge.
'I.. I was only kidding,' he stated, not wanting you to feel forced in any way over the comment. Minho had a small moment of panic, frowning to himself.
You turned to look at him, leaning against the counter. 'I wasn't. What's the harm in a little date? Don't worry, I won't try and kiss you in the end,' you teased, 'Unless you really just don't want to.'
He eyed you for a few seconds before a smile formed on his lips, lifting his shoulders in a shrug. 'I'd be honored to date you,' he chuckled sheepishly, 'you know what I mean. You know.. cooking together and sitting down to watch something counts as a date.' As he spoke, he'd made his way around into the kitchen with you, 'I'm a pretty good cook if I do say so myself.'
He wasn't wrong. Making breakfast together with him was a blast and maybe a little messy- thankfully, he liked to clean. A bit more food than necessary was made but you were pretty sure Jeongin wouldn't mind and Felix was like a bottomless pit when it came to food. Soon enough, you were settling on the couch with your food, flipping through movies, and giggling over stupid little things. You found yourself adoring his company, especially when he set his plate down and snuggled up to your side, resting his head on your shoulder.
It didn't take long before your plate was joining his and your fingers were threading through his brunette locks. 'You know.. I don't even know what you study,' you mumbled, peeking at him curiously.
'Aerospace technology is what I'm majoring in, engineering, things of the sort,' he answered, tilting his head enough to look back at you, 'I do take a composition class, however.'
Your eyebrow raised. 'You write music..?'
'I do.. I, uh.. I sing, too,' he shrugged, turning his attention back to the t.v as he felt his cheeks heat up. He knew exactly what was coming, or at least he thought.
'I write lyrics sometimes.. I'd love to make some music with you one day.' Your voice was quiet, knowing no one else actually knew of your little pass-time. Your brother didn't even know how much you liked it.
Minho carefully turned so he could face you, chin on your shoulder, interested peeked. 'I'd like that.. What do you major in?'
Having him so close had you suddenly feeling rather timid, brushing his bangs away so you could clearly see his eyes. 'Biochemistry and botany.. I also take a few mythology based classes to fill my free time. Uhm.. I don't know if you know him, but Hyunjin also teaches me to dance on the weekends. Maybe one day I could.. choreograph something to your music?'
'Biochem and botany? Wow, that's pretty impressive,' he mused, showing that cute little smile of his, 'You dance, too? Well, now I'm looking forward to it. What kind of dance?'
'Mostly ballroom and contemporary, plus I did a little ballet when I was younger.'
You found yourselves getting lost on the topic of working together and you could really see it going somewhere. You'd never had anyone to work with, so to have someone so excited made you feel warm and happy.
The next handful of days, you'd only grown closer to each other, becoming basically attached at the hip. ( 'They act like a married couple,' Felix mumbled to Jeongin, causing his boyfriend to snort. 'Chris would kill him.' ) He'd managed to settle things with your brother and get back into his dorm, much to your ( attempt at lowkey ) sadness. You missed having him in your bed, cuddling you and watching movies with you; you wouldn't admit it, but you stole his pastel blue sweater.
You'd fallen face first on your bed, burying your face into the pillow. 'Damn.. you miss him so much you're pulling the cliche teen romance movie moves? You've got it bad, Y/n,' Jeongin chuckled, leaning against your bedroom door frame. 'Why don't you just go see him?'
'I have to get to dance or Hyunjin is going to kick my ass,' you mumbled into the pillow, doing your best to hold back the urge to whine, 'I wish he was going to be around...'
Jeongin grinned to himself. 'You should get going, you know how snippy Jin gets.'
You were reluctant to grab your bag and head out, traveling along the all too familiar path to the dance studio. 'Y/n!' You looked up to meet the gaze of Felix, raising a brow at the young blonde.
'What's up, Fe? I figured you'd be with Jeongin today.'
He waved a hand, falling into step next to you. 'I'm headed to a study group.. Got a big case to work on for class,' he smiled and shrugged, 'Where are you heading? I heard you were missing someone.'
You made a mental note to dispose of your roommate. 'Hyunjin and I have dance practice today and I never said I missed him!' Groaning, you brought your hands up to rub your face, nearly jumping out of your skin when an arm went around your shoulders from the opposite side.
'Who don't you miss?'
You wanted the ground to open up and swallow you. Looking up to see Minho and that damn smile, you rolled your eyes; 'Don't get cocky.'
'You guys are so gross- I'm out,' Felix waved, separating from the two of them to enter the building he was needed in. Waving him off, you leaned into the brunette's side.
'What are you doing here?' You questioned up to him, opening the door to the next building over, walking in with him.
Following along, he clicked his tongue. 'Jeongin told me you had dance today.. say I should come see- if you'd let me.'
You felt anxiety wash through your body at the idea of him being around while you danced; no one but Hyunjin was allowed around to do so. You thought over it for a few minutes as you walked, stopping at the studio door, chewing into the bottom of your lip. 'Do..I- Do you want to?' you questioned, playing with the strap of your bag.
Minho reached to lightly poke your cheek. 'You know, I'm not going to get upset if you say no? I can go hang at the library, work on my notes, then come back when you're done? Take you out to eat?'
'You.. can watch,' you answered finally, opening the door to step in. You greeted the raven waiting for you, taking notice of the annoyed expression he held, knowing you were a few minutes late. 'Uh.. I have a friend joining me today, Hyunjin, this is--'
'Lee Minho.. Didn't think you let yourself in the company of people like him,' he responded and just turned to the laptop to set up the playlist for the evening. You kept silent and gave the oldest an apologetic look, setting your bag aside.
The first half of the practice went by smoothly, moving along with your steps easily; you weren't as nervous as you thought you'd be, pretending Minho wasn't there for the sake of your sanity. When you came to a pause, you sank to the floor, breathing a bit hard- your dumbass had forgotten your water.
The brunette noticed and frowned. 'Want me to go get you some water?'
'Please, I'll love you forever,' you whined softly, pressing your back to the wall behind you. You were thankful as he headed out of the room to retrieve water before you ended up passing out from dehydration.
What he hadn't expected was to come back to Hyunjin kneeling down, kissing you and you seemingly returning it. He waited a few minutes before entering the room, quietly setting the bottle down. 'Hey, I got.. a call from someone in my study group. I'll see you around later, okay? Good luck with the rest of practice.'
You didn't notice the sadness in his eyes nor the smirk your raven haired partner held.

One Piece Chapter 946 Review
Tumblr media
Imagine reading the chapter’s title, believing that the fight is still on. After two weeks of waiting, you would think that despite how crazy it is that Big Mom took down Queen in a mere second, the war isn’t over. The chapter’s title is a lie. Okay, not really, but if you think the main focus is the fight itself, you will be right…for only 4 pages. Big Mom destroys Queen with just swinging. It’s like watching Hulk versus Loki all over again; it’s funny, but crazy and intimidating. It’s not discrediting Queen, rather show how much of a gap between a high ranking commander and a Yonko truly is. It’s insane. But hey, at least those two back-to-back double-page spread are a lot of fun to look at. Queen had no chance.
On the plus side, Kidd and Killer are freed from drowning, so it’s a damn good thing Big Mom shows up to bring carnage. Surprisingly, the whole chapter is downright hilarious, even with some moments of alarming fear. For starters, the prisoner’s guards’ reactions are priceless. They instantly lost their mind as soon as Queen was decimated. I can’t blame them; I too would lose my mind. I mentioned Kidd and Killer are freed, thanks to Big Mom. She also unintentionally freed Kawamatsu as well. We don’t get to see him, but it is unknown whether he escaped or still inside, waiting to reveal his design. I, for one, am looking forward to his inevitable appearance.
While I did mention about the chapter being hilarious, which will be in full effect in the next part, there’s a moment of gratefulness that I didn’t expect. Out of all characters, Caribou is the one to receive it. It feels that it’s only been an arc ago that he was a total villain; now, well he can be still, but reliability is new. Udon is in trouble, but the guards’ smails aren’t working; therefore, Kaido has no idea what’s happening. You got to thank Caribou for that. He disrupted the communication line with the Boss Smails, so nothing can’t transmit. He’s actually going with the plan. Who knew he will be this helpful. I’m actually shocked yet pleased. Give credit where it’s due.
The rest of the chapter is where all the hilarity comes in. Big Mom got so happy to finally get a hold on to the pot of Oshiruko. It plays off that maybe, just maybe, she will understand that there is none and she will be fine. Her reaction to the empty pot is terrifying; like she’s about to create her own Silent Hill. It’s so scary, everyone lost their mind (again) and cry out to evacuate. That got me rolling. Speaking of rolling, the next scene is genius, and it starts with Luffy. Big Mom lost her memory, so Luffy can actually escape without looking like a target. This idiot still make himself a target when he proudly announced that he ate Oshiruko. This guy can’t be real…
How the hell can he still put his life in danger? Just how?! It’s mind-numbing that he will try to save himself by excusing that he spoke out loud by accident, yet he says it again out loud. Oh. My. God. At this point, if he dies, good. I find it hilarious that Luffy doesn’t get the hint that Big Mom lost her memory and believes his disguise as a Samurai is tricking her. Yeah, because no one would think a rubber man with a scar on his cheek and on his body is the famous Strawhat bounty, Luffy. Logic! So, what we essentially end up receiving is Luffy versus Big Mom in a Sumo Match. No wonder Hinomaruzumou is ending.
Then, we receive the greatest plot twist ever. You think Big Mom is out there to grab some Oshikuro for herself? The truth is, yes, she is, but more importantly, that’s right, more importantly, she wanted it for the village that were friendly to her. In other words, she is actually a nice person that is willing to share. What a twist! Attack on Titan be damned! I was in tears by this revelation. It’s stunning to think Big Mom is portrayed as the good guy, and Luffy as the bad guy. How the hell did we get to this point?
As much as I laughed a lot in here, the ending is unexpected, but a very interesting twist to the mayhem. It’s worth mentioning that Luffy and Hyogoro can’t leave the ring, or else, their collars will explode. Big Mom comes down crashing and the collars are about to explode, until Luffy manages to use his other Haki’s technique and breaks them off in time. As cool that was, the real interest comes after.
Instead of running away, Hyogoro begins a new training, using Big Mom as a challenger. However, the trick is, he will put his life on the line and force Luffy to save him by stopping Big Mom’s devastating strike. Basically, the twist is, his training is with Big Mom; if you want to defeat a Yonko, you must train with a Yonko. Luffy did it on the heat of a moment, but it’s likely that his deep desire to protect is what made it possible. That’s a clever twist. I thought Big Mom will be there only for destruction, but now, she is used as a training lesson. Oda and his surprises; always bring one and two together.
Tumblr media
This chapter was a lot of fun. The one-sided beat-down was something else, entertaining however. Caribou surprisingly had me praising; let’s hope he keeps it up. A lot of hilarity ensued with Big Mom and Luffy. The role reversed twist had me dying. The ending twist is very interesting. One way or another, Luffy made himself the target for Big Mom. I guess this is a nightmare. It could have been prevented, but sometimes, fate works in a funny way.

Holly Kirkland Infodump!
I was asked for an info dump on my OC, Holly Kirkland, so… here it is… I’m sorry it’s so late and I honestly have no excuse but it’s here now.
At the beginning of “It’s My Life,” Holly starts out as a seventeen-year-old with no family to speak of and a very abrasive attitude. Through the story, as more’s learned about her background, it becomes evident that her attitude is a protective measure because she’s had to look out for herself and isn’t willing to be a victim. By the end, Holly’s reconnected with her biological father and acquired a surrogate family for herself, but she still has bad habits of lying by omission and letting her temper, impatience, and spitefulness guide her behavior.
From an author’s viewpoint, Holly Kirkland isn’t my favorite OC (I think that title belongs to McKenna Anderson. Sorry, Holly) but she is the one I’m most proud of. Creating her was a way of working through some difficult issues I was having with my own family that I wish had ended differently. Holly’s experiences in the foster system are based on the experiences of two of my foster brothers. Her familial relationship with Booth is very convenient because I only decided to do that after I’d started writing the story, and it reflected more of my personal life. (Unfortunately, Holly has a happier ending than I do in that department.) I wish I had made her differently, if anything so that she would be more believable, but going off of what a lot of my readers say, I did a good enough job balancing her that she’s a relatable character, if not a very realistic one.
I owe a lot of my character development skills to Holly. Through the years I’ve been writing with her I’ve learned what I like, what I don’t, and how to hit a better medium in between. That favorite OC I mentioned, McKenna (OC from White Collar fanfic, “Lie a Little Better”) wouldn’t have turned out as well as she did if I hadn’t made Holly first. McKenna has a lot of upfront weaknesses and faults that I wouldn’t have been comfortable with if I had written these two stories in the reverse order. I still fully intend to use Holly as a continuing OC, but I’m trying to tone it down without undermining the traits she already has.
I’m pretty sure that’s not what you meant by an infodump, anon, so I’m moving on to share actual information that has or hasn’t come up in the series yet.
Holly’s favorite colors are blue and purple.
Her favorite subjects in school actually weren’t always science. She did really well in PE and would have been on a track team if her age in high school hadn’t gotten her socially excluded. She also liked social studies and built good relationships with her teachers.
Holly has a definite interest in psychology, which has come up several times in “It’s My Life,” even if she never comes out and says it. She would be more vocal about it if Brennan didn’t look down on it so harshly, and because she values Brennan’s opinion, Holly’s not going to choose to pursue that interest professionally (at least in the near future, I mean, you never really know).
She loves to work in the field, which is why she tries so hard to be headstrong and fearless in dangerous situations. She knows how Booth sees lab rats and wants to prove that she’s got the street smarts to survive and succeed in the real world, plus, she’s talented at reading people and likes adrenaline.
Holly read Fifty Shades of Grey when Angela went to see the movie, but she hated it. She’s fine with all the BDSM stuff, to each their own and all that, but she hates Christian. (I’m reading the book now and it’s not romantic, he’s a controlling asshole)
Holly listens to basically anything on the radio, she’s not a huge fan of rap but there are some songs in the genre that she would really like. She’s into pop, rock, and alternative mostly, and likes a lot of classic 80s and early 90s because that’s mostly what she grew up hearing in various foster homes.
Her favorite movie is The Princess Bride because it has the malevolent bad guys like in real life, but it still ends happily. Her least favorite part is how the princess rarely ever did anything to help herself, but she still loves the movie. And she makes up for the chick flick by her second favorite film being a dark murder movie.
Holly’s favorite show is either Criminal Minds or American Horror Story. She likes plots that consider humans and how twisted they can be. Criminal Minds wins out on most days because it’s based in reality instead of the supernatural, and she thinks that that makes it more unnerving.
If anyone ever asked her what kind of pet she’d want to have, if money and time and space weren’t issues, Holly would’ve said a dog. Ever since Kenton went after her, she can’t think of dogs the same way and now she’d say she would like a cat, or maybe a ferret.
Holly’s never been on a date and she has no current interest in it. She’d like to have a significant other someday, but she’s not in a rush and doesn’t feel like she can or should make that kind of commitment when she has plenty of other things going on in her life.
She’s always wanted to get a tattoo, but hasn’t been brave enough to even try to get one. She doesn’t know what she’d get, she just really likes the idea of having something important symbolized on her body forever. Body modifications are rad.
Is that enough? I can make a second post if you want 😊
(Speaking of body modifications – in “It’s My Life,” there are several chapters where Holly and Brennan share a similar view towards plastic/cosmetic surgeries that’s less than accepting. At the time, I didn’t know any better and hadn’t done any research into the topic, like I should have. At the time, I’d thought any surgery that wasn’t medically necessary fell into the same Kardashian-like category. I understand now that my assumptions were highly erroneous and would like to go back and change Holly’s views in that chapter to reflect an opinion I feel she would have if she had actual knowledge on the topic: that it really doesn’t matter what someone chooses to do with their body, as long as they are able to give fully-informed consent and they aren’t put at risk by the procedure.)

hey katie--could you do a ranking of all of the amber benson movies you've seen, from favorite to least favorite? :)
This is an EXCELLENT question, thank you, Clem! I took it a little too seriously maybe (and i’m a little drunk and long-winded), but you asked, so I’m giving a good answer ;)
I pulled out my handy dandy masterlist of Amber’s work and started categorizing her movies! (fun pic to clarify that i am the world’s biggest nerd)
Tumblr media
Also please note that these are just my opinions - I am by no means a film critic or an expert on anything, I’ve just seen a lot of Amber Benson movies!
Never seen: (if anyone has links, send em over please)Hollywood, PennsylvaniaLong Island Confidential
Not yet released: The Griddle HouseSelling IsobelThe Nightmare GalleryGlossary of Broken Dreams
Here’s where it gets fun!
Terrible:Act Your Age - this movie is not very good, and she’s hardly in it, so it gets a “terrible” ranking, yikes!
Meh all around (worst to best):The Blue Tooth Virgin - she’s in literally two minutes. i couldn’t watch the restDon’s Plum - i’ve only seen her parts! and apart from her face, i found them pretty unlikeable. :/ SFW - she’s in like ten minutes at the end. looking very adorable with round cheeks and round glasses. the rest of the movie is just okJack Reed (all three) - TV movies. She was SO YOUNG but she’s only in a couple scenes each. From what I’ve seen, they’re fine, nothing groundbreakingSimple Things - this is just bad, and she’s not really in it that much, but it could be worse. somehow. don’t ask me howKiss the Bride - again, i’ve only seen her parts, and they’re underwhelmingThe Crooked Man - so she plays a nice mom, and then she has a shotgun, and then she wears scrubs and gets murdered. she’s so pretty and tragic. but the whole movie is just…. so shitty and she’s only in 10 minutes of it. so it’s meh
Okay for plot, not for Amber:The Prime Gig - this is actually a pretty good movie! i enjoyed it. she’s really not in it much at all - definitely a background character, and she only has a few lines. but i sat through the whole movie and she looks super badass in her few appearances.Imaginary Crimes - another background character, but with many more lines this time. she’s very young and very adorable. another movie where i watched the whole thing, because it was good all around, and not just for her face!
Okay for Amber, not for plot: Taboo - oh my god, Taboo. I rewatch this all the time because she’s extra hot in it - she plays drunk the whole time, and at one point wears a nightie and a collar - but oh my god it’s so bad. the plot is weird, the dialog is stilted, the acting is so wooden. just a terrible movie, but with one hot amberIntermedio - see above! she had a broken foot when they filmed this, and is on crutches the whole time. her hair is super long and she wears a pretty short skirt. those are the biggest selling points…. oh and she gets chopped in halfTripping Forward - ugh, i kinda hate this movie, because the leading guy makes me feel uncomfortable. i just don’t like his face or voice or personality. but amber is beautiful and cool and has streaks of blue in her hair. honestly you should skip watching this movie and just look at the beautiful gifs maria made insteadHoliday Wishes - this is hard, because it’s pretty bad, but i want to like it! it’s a christmas movie, she’s in love with a ghost, there’s some body switching, ugh. the plot just really irritates me and i find different things to complain about every time. and whoever dressed her should be fired. but she’s pretty and she’s the lead actress, so that has to count for somethingOne-Eyed Monster - never tell amber this, but i don’t like this movie…. she really likes it so it makes me feel bad to dislike it :/ it’s about these people shooting a porno in the mountains. she’s the makeup artist. ron jeremy’s dick gets possessed by an alien, and it impregnates amber and kills everyone else. it’s so weird and so not my humor…. but amber loves is and amber looks great in it, so, watch it i guess? Attack of the Gryphon - this would be ranked better if the gryphon wasn’t so flipping bad! the cgi just ruins the whole thing. well that and the evil sorcerer’s weird slutty sidekicks. i dunno. amber plays a badass, sword-fighting princess, and at one point (where she’s kissing a mediocre guy) you can see her whole back, which is lovely. she does a cute accent too. this is ranked highest in this category because she worked so hard to do the accent, ride a horse, fight with the sword, etc, but she couldn’t save this movie. Pretty decent:Latter Days - a heartwarming film about gay love! amber isn’t a huge character but she’s good.Another Harvest Moon - another heartwarming one, this time about folks in a nursing home. amber has blue hair again (what’s with her and blue hair) and it’s very sweet! The Crush - just. iconic. watch it. she’s so little and it’s just a really really good filmDust Up - a slightly weird Western horror type movie. lots of gore and drugs. she is a total badass at the end. and holds a baby! mom!amber! Desire Will Set You Free - the biggest selling point is the lesbian sex scene. i don’t super love most of the movie, probably because i’m a boring old lady who’s not involved in the berlin gay party/drug scene. but her parts are excellent and she kisses a lady!!!! and protects a beautiful trans lady! she’s so good! King of the Hill - possibly her favorite film she’s ever worked on, and one of her first. it’s really good. young Jesse Bradford is the lead character. she’s got a small part as his neighbor. she got to dance with him and kiss him! and then have a seizure on the floor. she’s very good and the film as a whole is excellent. long and slightly depressing, or maybe just bittersweet, but definitely a good one. House of Demons - this is high on the list because i literally just watched it. she’s a hippie! who time travels! and she trips on acid! she’s very pretty and angelic, and the film has a really interesting premise. definitely will watch again. The Killing Jar - oh i unabashedly love this. she’s a small-town waitress who gets held hostage at her restaurant. no spoilers but she doesn’t die, woohoo, and is a lowkey badass. add her pretty face and southern accent and it’s just great.
Amazing:Can’t Hardly Wait - ok forget the fact that she’s in it for like two seconds, i fucking love this movie, it’s so goodBye Bye Love - tiny teenage amber and eliza! ahh i love this. another heartwarming one. she has a decently big role and she’s just so cuteChance - YES. love. so much respect for amber. she wrote and produced and directed and starred and edited. and kissed james marsters. and was amazing. go watch this! it’s on youtube! she’s incredible! Lovers, Liars, and Lunatics - all of the above (minus the kissing) but better. funnier and tighter. she’s an adorable clumsy burglar. it’s excellentStrictly Sexual - ohhhhh god oh god. she’s not the most likeable character but holy fuck is she sexy. there’s just…. a lot of sex and drinking and smoking, a lot of excellent outfits, a lot of cursing, a lot of amber being to-die-for sexy and gah. plus she’s in the whole thing! as ¼ of the main cast! lots of sexy amber! Race You To the Bottom - !!!! i love this movie!!! so much!!!! she is just incredible. and it’s a good movie too! i mean again she’s not the most likeable, and neither is her love interest, but it’s okay because she’s so hot! and she’s again in the whole thing, but this time as ½ of the main cast, and therefore she gets almost ½ of the screentime and it’s so so so good7 Things To Do Before I’m 30 - MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE AMBER MOVIE. oh my god it’s just the most amazing thing i’ve ever seen. she’s so adorable through the whole thing, and she’s IN the whole thing! as the star! the lead character! the one who all the plot revolves around! !!!!! do you know how groundbreaking that is for an amber movie!!!! not to mention she looks SMOKING the whole time. i mean how many times have i reblogged the bikini scene??? watch it for that alone. you’ll start it for the bikini and then continue for the adorable love story and her character arc. oh my god just go watch this movie now
to anyone who read this whole thing… bless your heart. thank you clem for letting me yell about amber so much. i think ive spent my whole tumblr career building toward this ask. thank you thank you and i love you clem and i love you all and i love amber benson the most!!!!
Tumblr media
(see we’ve come full circle because clem made this for me and now i’m amber hugging clem) (does that make sense)

Not Enough: Arrow 6x05 Review (Deathstroke Returns)
I am going to be honest. I have a lot of Slade Wilson issues.  So, I wasn't particularly jazzed for "Deathstroke Returns." Some of my issues are addressed, but most are not. Oliver’s reaction to Slade in particular made this a difficult episode for me to enjoy.  Also, most of the twists weren’t very twisty. We could see them coming.
Tumblr media
Let's dig in...
Oliver & Slade (and Olicity)
Slade Wilson is one of the best Arrow villains. It's just fact. I appreciate Arrow is striving to differentiate Slade from Adrian Chase by blaming 95% of his S2 actions on the mirakuru. Slade was crazy because of the drugs. Chase was crazy because he was the epitome of all evil.
Tumblr media
Even though I'm not entirely comfortable with the "blame it on the drugs" explanation, I was willing to roll with it. And then... 5x23 happened. It's obvious Arrow is embarking on some kind of redemption like arc with Slade Wilson. That's all fine well and good. It's probably where the character needs to go, especially if the drugs are out of his system.
The bargain Oliver and Slade made in 5x23 was information about Joe in exchange for Slade helping save William. Here's my hang up - I don't think Slade held up his end of the bargain. What did he actually do that saved Oliver's son? He pretended to be evil to trick Boomerang, Talia and Evelyn so Oliver could flip Evelyn like a rag doll.
Tumblr media
Not a horribly impressive move considering she weighs about 90 pounds soaking wet.
Tumblr media
But sure, he helped free Oliver's friends. Plus 20 points.
Then Slade pretended to be evil to trick Black Siren, so she'd take Oliver to the hostages and he could slip Dinah that collar thingy that freed them. Again, I haven't been blown away with BS evil mastermind skills, but sure.
Tumblr media
He helped free Oliver's friends. Plus 20 points.
Slade kicked some ass (along with every other team member).  Plus 10 points. He also gave some incredibly sage advice five years in the making. Plus 50 points.
Tumblr media
However, when push came to shove and Oliver really NEEDED Slade to help - he abandoned them all to die. WTF? Minus 500 points.
Tumblr media
By the way that includes WILLIAM. Nobody knew William was with Oliver. It's why Samantha went running into the woods in the first place - to look for her son. Oliver was busy facing off with Chase. For all Slade knew, William was in those woods just like Samantha (and the rest of the team) believed. Instead of staying and trying to help save Oliver's son (and every single person he cares about in the world) LIKE HE PROMISED, Slade chose to save his own skin. It was Oliver who found William. It was Oliver who saved William.  The dude is dressed head to toe in KEVLAR and instead three unarmed women, without any protective gear, ran towards 250 bombs to look for a little boy.
Tumblr media
Slade wasn't under the effects of the mirakuru. He was just selfish. He was a coward.
Tumblr media
This is the kick start to his redemption arc? Am I being too hard on Slade? No. I'm not.
Tumblr media
Slade put a sword through Moira's frigging heart y'all. Her murder scene is the most disturbing death on Arrow.
Tumblr media
Slade Wilson has a lot of work to do before he EARNS (yes earns) Oliver's help. He didn't even come close on Lian Yu.
Tumblr media
And you know what? That's not the Slade Wilson I remember from Season 1 and Season 2. The Slade Wilson who was Oliver's friend would have stayed to help. So what is Arrow trying to say? The mirakuru left Slade permanently dark and twisty? He is a monster only when he chooses not be? WHAT?
Tumblr media
There's playing with the grey zone and then there's just sloppy. Slade abandoning the team was unnecessary particularly if Oliver wasn't going to address it in any real way.
Tumblr media
Which is exactly what happened tonight.  Slade's son Joe works for Australian Intelligence. Long story short, Joe was at the wrong place and the wrong time and is now serving a life sentence in Kasnia. Slade doesn't need the Green Arrow. He needs Oliver Queen. He wants Oliver to wear a suit, play diplomat and hand over a suitcase of cash to buy his son out of prison.
Oliver primarily hems and haws over helping Slade because of the promise he made to William. I mean, yeah that, but also HE LEFT YOUR FRIENDS TO DIE!!!! ONE OF THEM DID DIE!!! ONE OF THEM IS IN A COMA OLIVER!!!! ALSO SLADE KILLED YOUR MOTHER. YOU COULD SET THE BAR A LITTLE HIGHER HERE FELLA!!!!!
Tumblr media
It's actually Felicity who convinces Oliver to go.
Tumblr media
Yup, you read that right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source: oliverxfelicity
Oliver is so me in this conversation.
Tumblr media
I get that Felicity is looking beyond Slade to Joe. From her perspective, Oliver is helping an innocent man. It's not about Slade Wilson. It's not fair to punish the son for the father's sins. Pretty much the theme of the show. I'm with Felicity on her thinking here and God bless this human personification of rainbows for taking the higher road.
Tumblr media
It's just.... SLADE HELD A SWORD TO HER THROAT. HE LEFT FELICITY FOR DEAD.
Tumblr media
I know Arrow relies heavily on Felicity to sell storylines, but this particular conversation felt like a stretch. Yes, even though it's Felicity. Perhaps it's my own Slade anger transference and I'll own that.
Tumblr media
I would have been perfectly okay with Felicity saying, "Tell Slade to go screw himself. Let's pack for Aruba baby."
Tumblr media
Source:westallenolicitygifs
This is why I am not a hero. I am really okay with that though.
Tumblr media
That's also not the character and I understand that. The advice probably carries more weight with Oliver (and is the very definition of selfless) because it does come from Felicity. If there's anyone who Oliver needs the okay from to go - it's her. He also needs the okay from Thea, but she's in a friggin coma. Thanks for nothing Slade.
Tumblr media
Thus, Oliver boards the plane with Slade and hijinks ensue. I'm just gonna give you the run down because the level of predictability in "Deathstroke Returns" is incredibly high.
When Oliver arrives at the prison he's told Joe is dead. Joe is not dead.
Slade's "friend" Nylander is not his friend. He works from The Jackals -  group that "kidnaps" Joe from the prison.
Joe was not kidnapped from prison. He is the leader of The Jackals.
DUN DUNN DUNN!!!! This revelations were shocking to absolutely no one.
Tumblr media
Slade does keep to one of the bargains he made with Oliver. He refuses to let Oliver "suit up" in any way.  When Oliver insists on helping rescue Joe from the Jackals, Slade drugs him.  HA! Classic. I’m slightly less crabby with you Wilson, but only slightly.
Tumblr media
He even leaves Oliver a little glass of water for when he wakes up. See? Slade is good! REDEMPTION ARC COMPLETE.
Tumblr media
That's not to say Slade doesn't exhibit some guilt - just not over abandoning everyone on Lian Yu. Initially, Slade has no intention of seeing Joe once he's freed from prison. Slade doesn't believe he has a right to.
"I gave up my right to be his father when I stepped out of the light into the shadows and became this monster."
Oliver argues Slade isn't Deathstroke anymore. He thinks Slade is the man he was before. And THIS is where I have the problem.
Tumblr media
This is Oliver blatantly ignoring what Slade did on Lian Yu. I honestly cannot fathom why. This is one of the most frustrating things about Arrow. They often ignore their own canon for the sake of driving the plot forward. It creates massive plot holes and makes the behavior of your lead character inexplicable.
Tumblr media
Except, these issues are totally unavoidable. If the goal is to redeem Slade Wilson THEN REDEEM HIM. Use 5x23 to really kick off the arc that will complete in 6x05 and 6x06. Abandoning everyone on the island was completely unnecessary. Particularly if it wasn't going to hold any real consequences for Slade and Oliver's relationship.
Tumblr media
Oliver not even broaching the subject with Slade is infuriating. What's more it makes Oliver's attitude towards him, and blind trust, completely baffling.  Oliver is all in on "it was the drugs" to explain away Slade's behavior, but that doesn't apply to what happened on Lian Yu. Yet, Oliver is standing here arguing Slade is a changed man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source: felicitysmoakgifs
Me neither Felicity. There's a difference between being honorable and being a pansy. Oliver, you are being the latter.
Tumblr media
Arrow has a habit of telling rather than showing. If you are going to write a redemption arc we need to see the change. Not be told there is change. The man Arrow is telling us Slade is isn't jiving with the Slade Wilson we see. You can play with the grey areas of the character without making him a despicable person. I'm not really interested in Slade's redemption after the events of Lian Yu, because I no longer buy that it's the mirakuru that makes Slade act like a monster. I think he just chooses to be one whenever it suits him. He chooses to be a nice guy when it suits him. These are not markers of redemption. These are markers of a manipulative and selfish human being.
At least Diggle and Felicity take a moment to remark on how uncomfortable it makes them that Oliver is helping Slade.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DIGGLE!!!! MY MAN!!!
Tumblr media
Of course, Felicity's agreement here makes her early conversation with Oliver even more confusing.
Tumblr media
Source: felicitysmoakgifs
Would it have killed the writers to include some of Felicity's reservations in her discussion with Oliver? It would have been nice to hear Oliver's perspective on what Slade did on the island.  Instead, we get Diggle and Felicity saying, "Yup. He left us for dead. Oliver is helping him. That sucks." And... that's it. That's not addressing the issue in any real way.
Tumblr media
The flashbacks with Slade and his son are interesting, but in an incredibly sad way.
Tumblr media
Source: twitter.com
Slade lies to Joe about what he really does for living. He tells his son that he works for an airline and that’s why he has to go away all the time. Joe knows Slade is lying because kids know when they are being lied to. It created a distance between father and son long before Deathstroke came into the picture.
It's so much worse than lying though. The camping trip isn't just a way for Slade to spend time with Joe. He's on a mission tracking the man who took Yao Fei to Lian Yu. There's living a dual life and then there's Slade Wilson.
Tumblr media
Perhaps Slade isn't the person you should be listening to when it comes to fatherhood and dual lives Oliver.
Tumblr media
Slade kills the man after he tells him where Yao Fei was taken. There's a rustling in the bushes and I promise you Joe Wilson watched his father kill somone. Trust me. I have a unique skill for figuring out the obvious plot developments everyone else has already figured out. STICK WITH ME KIDS!
Tumblr media
The point is to create a contrast between William/Oliver and Slade/Joe. Oliver worries he'll have to break his promise to William (risk his life and be out in the field)  to help Slade. It's nice Oliver can see the obvious plot developments coming too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source: oliverxfelicity
Felicity, in her never ending wisdom, tells Oliver to be honest with William. Maybe not tell him the full story, we are trying to decrease William’s nightmares and therapy bills, but enough of the story so he can understand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a key piece to parenting. You don't need to lie to your kids. You also don't need to tell them the truth about absolutely everything - particularly when they are too young to hear it. However, there is a middle ground. Your responsibility as a parent is to find it. You need to tell your child the truth in a way they will understand it and is age appropriate. Oliver doesn't need to go all or nothing here. He simply needs to offer William the truth he will understand - and has a right to know.
This is how Oliver includes William in his dual life without separating him from it with lies. Oliver is keeping William safe, but he's also not closing his son off to who his father truly is. This is the mistake Slade made with Joe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source: oliverxfelicity
Look at his face. Smoaked again. Oliver, your ability to successfully parent William depends greatly on Felicity’s co parenting. Marry this woman immediately you love sick puppy.
Tumblr media
Is Slade Wilson redeemable? I don't know. The events on Lian Yu bother me as much as Moira's death. At least Slade acknowledges what he did to Moira, but I feel like that sets a very low redemption bar for one Arrow’s greatest villains.
Hopefully, next week is the stronger of this two part episode. Joe takes Slade and Oliver hostage at the end of “Deathstroke Returns.” We're supposed to worry Slade will turn on Oliver next week with that unbelievably heavy handed promo. He won't. We know he won't. However, I don't know if that's enough for me. I need more Slade Wilson. A lot more.
Dinah and Vigilante
The identity of Vigilante is... Vince. Dinah's old partner and boyfriend. You know, the one she thought was dead and became a vigilante to avenge? Again, a plot development most people saw coming.
Tumblr media
It's a bummer because I was really looking forward to a shocking reveal. Dead lovers not being dead is the least shocking thing about Arrow.
Tumblr media
Vince was changed by the dark matter like Dinah was. He's able to heal, which he shows by taking a bullet in the head and being absolutely fine. Makes me wonder why he needs all the Kevlar, secret identity notwithstanding.
Tumblr media
Dinah spends most of the episode really ticked off.
Tumblr media
Source: twitter.com
Hell yeah girl.
Tumblr media
The man she loved let her believe he was dead for the last four years. #TeamDinah. If that wasn’t bad enough, Dinah became someone she didn’t recognize after Vince died. She did a lot things she regrets. Team Arrow, and Oliver, gave Dinah a purposeful and focused way to channel her grief and anger.  However, she carries guilt for the choices she made before Team Arrow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dinah's justification for those choices, maybe the one thing that helped her live with it, was Vince's death. Now Dinah feels even worse about the decisions she made because Vince is alive.
He is alive though. A fact Diggle points out. Yes, he's not dealing with a full deck, but John does push Dinah to recognize the miracle in Vince's reappearance. Dinah still loves Vince no matter how angry she is at him.
This hits Diggle squarely in the Andy zone.
Tumblr media
He reacted to Andy's arrival the same way Dinah is reacting to Vince. That anger led Diggle down a very dark path,
Tumblr media
so he really is the best person to try to help Dinah see beyond her anger. She does eventually open up to Diggle and tells him about the little paper roses Vince use to make for her. However, Dinah doesn't seen anything left of the man she used to love.
Vince's explanation for staying away from Dinah was that he couldn't be distracted from the mission. They didn't accomplish anything as cops and being a vigilante, this kind of vigilante, is the only way to make a difference.
Dinah lets Vince go and obviously John was right. She does still love him. Vince leaves Dinah a little paper rose later on as a signal to her, and to us, that he's not just a monster. The man she loved is still in there somewhere.
Tumblr media
Did this episode get me invested in Dinah and Vince? Eh. No.
Tumblr media
There wasn’t enough there, not yet, but I'm willing to let this play out and see where goes.
Adrian Chase's twin would have been awesome though.  I miss Josh Segarra.
Tumblr media
Stray Thoughts
Dinah changes into BC to face off with Vince while the FBI and SCPD crawling everywhere. I still don't know how she did it. Is there a phone booth nearby?
Because of her wardrobe change, Agent Watson quickly deduces Dinah went missing when BC showed up. This woman uses a lot of logic. She can stay.

Felicity is ready to lie under oath to be Oliver's alibi for all the nights he was Green Arrow-ing. RIDE OR DIE! THAT’S MY SHIP!
Tumblr media
But also we need to get some spousal privilege rolling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I was subpoenaed. I gotta go right?" LOL! Rene you precious child.
Alright, I admit I didn't realize it was Vince at first because I didn't recognize the actor. I really needed the flashback.

“I ask myself that every day." Oliver has this husband thing down. Just keep doing this and you'll make 50 years no problem, kiddo. Source: westallenolicitygifs
William calling dad to check in was the cutest. I'm a total sucker for all this father son bonding

Vince looks a little like Alaric from The Vampire Diaries. I keep doing double takes.
Slade using the sword to kill all those guys gave me Moira death scene flashbacks. It was unnerving.

It’s Mother’s day tomorrow. As soon as I am done writing this I will start cooking. We’re going to eat a very elaborate vegetarien sautée or, if I fail, we’re gonna order Dominos, and watch a sci fi movie marathon. How about you Crow, any big plans? If you like sci fi you are welcomed to join us!
I love sci-fi! I’d love to join you, but I’m still wiped out from a trip I just got back from. I’m getting wimpy in my old age… My plans to cook my dinner tomorrow for my wife sound like yours, but I’m skipping the part where I even try to cook. I’m going straight for Dominos. Also, for the record, I guess I’m bold this week. Talk about responsibility…
I don’t know – pizza is pretty good too
For those of you that need a little refresher. Last week’s episode was a real turning point. Tanjiro is now an official Demon slayer with his own uniform and black blade. Nezuko has woken up and is adorable as ever. And together they have their first demon slaying mission in a small town that has had its young women vanishing without a trace.
The first thing I noticed is the uniform. A simple black gakuran style outfit that’s under Tanjiro’s signature kimono. It really shouldn’t have been remarkable and yet it made quite an impact on the character design. Maybe it’s just me. I might have randomly decided to attribute authority to gakuran.
I hadn’t even thought about it, but now that you mention it, it does look like a school uniform! Tanjiro looked so official in it! I liked how proud he looked — just what you’d expect from someone who had just earned the uniform!
maybe it’s the priest collar?
The one aspect of the uniform that does stand out was hidden under the kimono. A bold embroidery of the word “destroy”. It strikes me that this organisation is called demon slayers and not demon hunters. A much more aggressive stance which leaves no room for mercy. Much like Buffy who you’ve brought up a few times.
Yeah, she wasn’t Buffy the Vampire Negotiator, was she? And in this episode, we got a glimpse of just what his title means…
why isn’t Tanjiro’s blade, blue?
They insisted on the significance of Tanjiro’s blade turning black once again. We didn’t actually learn anything aside from the fact that it’s so unusual, it’s seen as a bad omen. Black blade owners don’t live long enough to make a mark. Any guesses on what it really means, Crow?
Well, in a comment on our last episode’s review, Thong Do suggested it had something to do with Tanjiro’s family’s business. Just what that means I can’t guess, but Sakonji Urokodaki’s statement that most people with a black sword didn’t go far was forboding. But did you notice Tanjiro’s nonchalant reaction? I’m really liking his character!
on it!
It is finally time for the little birds to leave the nest. Tanjiro and Neuko bid farewell to Urokodaki but there’s a sense we’ll be seeing him again. I wasn’t all that worried about the old master. Rather I felt like something was a little off with Nezuko. She was more furtive than usual and the scene where she got in the box seemed almost sinister.
That uneasy feeling lingered as Nekuzo completely retreated within herself for the entire trip to the village. Did you get the same vibes I did?
I had that feeling from the first time she scuttled to the door to peek at Tanjiro in his new uniform. And when he asked her to get into the box, I’m sure you saw that under the blanket, she started to climb in, backed away, then tried again. All signs that she was uneasy or unsure of herself. That’ll mean something later — this show’s getting good about foreshadowing!
adorably foreboding
I have often said that Demon Slayer is not a very novel plot. And this episode was no different. Young virginal girls being snatched away without a trace. A lone survivor dealing with shell shock whom everyone refuses to believe. It’s been told a million times. But first, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Stories get retold time and time again when they have something of substance that remains appealing to audiences throughout the ages. Moreover, in this case, it’s all in the execution.
Plus, it save in setup time! With a few short scenes, we’re up to speed, and the show can concentrate on what’s different about Tanjiro and Nezuko.
Hey, did you see how the demon abducted the girl from her room? The shot of her, peaceful and asleep, as the pool of blackness gathered beneath her, was terrifying! And how about that show of her trying to reach up to the real world as the demon dragged her down into its dimensions? Horrifying stuff!
well I’m never sleeping again
We didn’t get a resolve this week but we got some pretty great looking fight scenes and another convincingly menacing looking demon. I found the teeth grinding tick particularly effective in making him stand out and seem extra creepy. For such a cartoony looking show they are quite effective at creating sinister monsters.
Taking something mundane but annoying like grinding teeth and raising it to such a psychologically disturbing level was excellent story-telling! Take the normal and twist it.
Oh and if the design and teeth thing wasn’t enough, it seems this is yet another morphed demon who can not only split himself into three distinct demons (with different personalities at that) but also sink into the ground and come out of walls. This is a lot like Buffy too. Were they would keep coming up with new powers for the vampires to keep things exciting. Technically speaking it’s not considered great writing but it is fun, so I don’t mind at at all.
The older I get, the more I think “great writing” means to keep an audience entertained. So far, so good!
I couldn’t find an optimistic screepcap…
In the last minutes, Nekuzo seemed to come back to herself a bit as she dominated the battle once again. Protecting both her brother and the innocent bystanders. And then we find out that her gentle, loving, pseudo father figure has brainwashed her to unquestionably fight her own kind, likely to the death.
I’m not sure how I feel about this. It may be why the earlier scenes had such an odd feel to them. Maybe the show is trying to tell me that I’m supposed to be conflicted. Again, I may be seeing something that’s not there but it seems there have been too many little touches. Shifts in the music, dimming of colors and just the way Neuko is being treated by both the plot and the camera is too deliberate to be coincidence.
I think you’re onto something here. I don’t really think that Urokodaki needed to do that; but then I recalled his warning that if she did kill humans, Tanjiro’s only option would be to kill her, then kill himself. The stakes are high for these two, so maybe a little cheating is okay?
you tell her
On the other hand, what if she starts thinking of herself as primarily a demon? Would she turn on herself? Or was the brainwashing/suggestion explicit in that it targets demons who have harmed or killed humans?
But it was awesome to see Nezuko back in action!
One thing is for sure, I teared up when Nezuko was tenderly patting the survivors. Whatever else they are building up to, it’s clear that Nezuko is the unliving, unbreathing heart of the series.
It was a brief scene — but it was so effective! It was the part where the pair morphed into her memory of herself and Tanjiro that did it for me.
trust us, it was sweet
Through cut scenes and flashbacks, we get a glimpse of the bigger story. A tiny sliver of a revelation in the form of a name: Kibutsuji Muzan. I hope I wrote that right. Muzan is a demon that’s either old or powerful enough (or both) to potentially be able to help Nezuko. Why they would do such a thing though, is still not clear to me. However, i seems that for a little while at least, Tanjiro is going to be disposing of local demons while trying to track down this Muzan person.
I like the set up. I’m here for this. I want to see more!
Me, too. And am I the only one who thinks the short of Muzan in the OP looks like Michael Jackson? That puts an interesting twist on the villain! If he start moonwalking, I’m not sure how I’ll react!
that’s not exactly a moonwalk
Oh and before we sign out. Look what I found and ordered:
Ohhh yeah!
You’ll have to share pictures of the merchandise when you get it! That’ll be awesome!
don’t miss our reviews!
