Okay. I've been playing Tokyo Debunker today, since the release happened to catch me on a day when all I'd planned to do was write fanfiction. I just finished reading the game story prologue (it was longer than expected!), so here's a review type post. If you're reading this post not having seen a single thing about this game: it's a story-based joseimuke gacha mobile game that just released globally today. It's about a girl who suddenly finds herself attending a magic school and mingling with elite, superhuman students known as ghouls. If you look in the tumblr tag for the game you'll see what appears to be a completely different game from 2019 or so: they retooled it completely midway through development, changing just about everything about it due to "escalating competition within the gaming industry."

I'll talk about how this looks like a blatant twst clone at the end.

Starting with the positive: The story is charming. I enjoyed it thoroughly the entire time and am excited to read more. The mix between visual novel segments and motion comics was really nice--it broke things up and added a lot of oomph to the action or atmospheric scenes that visual novels generally lack. I like the art in the comic parts a lot. the live2d in the visual novel parts is... passable. Tone-wise, I think the story was a little bit all over the place and would like to see more of the horror that it opened on, but I didn't mind the comedic direction it went in either. The translation is completely seamless. The characters so far all have unique voices and are just super fun and cute. Of the ones who've had larger roles in the story so far, there's not a single one I dislike. It's all fully voiced in Japanese and the acting is solid. (I don't recognize any voices, and can't seem to find any seiyuu credits, so it seems they're not big names, but they deliver nonetheless.) Kaito in particular I found I was laughing at his lines a ton, both the voicing and the writing.

The problem is like. The gameplay is the worst dark-pattern microtransaction-riddled bullshit I've ever seen. Hundred passive timers going at all times. Fifty different item-currencies. Trying to get you to spend absurd amounts of real world money at every turn. There's like five different indicators that take you to various real-money shop items that I don't know how to dismiss the indicator, I guess you just have to spend money, wtaf. Bajillion different interlocking systems mean you have zero sense of relative value of all the different item-currencies. I did over the course of the day get enough diamonds for one ten-pull, which I haven't used yet. Buying enough diamonds for a ten-pull costs a bit under $60 (presumably USD, but there's a chance the interface is automatically making that CAD for me--not gonna spend the money to check lmfao), with an SSR rate of 1%. BULLSHIIIIIT.

There's like a goddamn thousand-word essay explaining the dozen different types of character upgrades and equippables and equippables for the equippables!! Bad! Bad game design! That's just overcomplicating bullshit to trick people into thinking they're doing something other than clicking button to make number go up! That is not gameplay!

In terms of the actual gameplay, there is none. The battle system is full auto. There might be teambuilding, but from what I've seen so far, most of that consists of hoping you pull good cards from gacha and then clicking button to make number go up. There's occasional rhythm segments but there's no original music, it's just remixes of public domain classical music lmao. I'd describe the rhythm gameplay as "at least more engaging than twisted wonderland's," which is not a high bar

And like, ok, I gotta remark on how derivative it is. Like I mentioned in my post earlier, this game is unabashedly aping twisted wonderland's setting and aesthetic. (That said, most of the stuff it steals from twst is magic school stuff that twst also basically stole from Harry Potter, so...?) However, it isn't exactly like twst: in this one, the characters say fuck a lot and bleed all over the place and do violence. Basically, the tone is a fair bit more adult than twst's kid-friendly vibe. (Not, like, adult adult, and I probably wouldn't even call it dark--it's still rated Teen lol. Just more adult than twst.)

Rather than just being students at magic school, the ghouls also go out into the mundane world to go on missions where they fight and investigate monsters and cryptids. Honestly, the magic school setting feels pretty tacked-on. The things that are enjoyable about this would've been just as enjoyable in about any other setting--you can tell this whole aspect was a late trend-chasing addition, lmao. So, yeah, it's blatantly copying twst to try to steal some players, but... Eh, I found myself not caring that much. Someone more (or less) into twst than me may find it grating.

Character-wise, eh, sure, yeah, they're a bit derivative in that aspect too, but it's a joseimuke game, the characters are always derivative. Thus far the writing & execution has been solid enough that I didn't care if they were tropey. If I were to compare it to something else, I'd say the relationship between the protagonist and the ghouls feels more like that of the sage and wizards in mahoyaku than anything from twst. There's some mystery in exactly what "ghouls" are and their place in this world that has me intrigued and wanting to know more about this setting and how each of the characters feels about it. I have a bad habit of getting my hopes up for stories that put big ideas on the table and then being disappointed when they don't follow through in a way that lives up to my expectations, though.

So, my final verdict: I kind of just hope someone uploads all the story segments right onto youtube so nobody has to deal with the dogshit predatory game to get the genuinely decent story lol. Give it a play just for the story if you have faith in your ability to resist dark patterns. Avoid at all costs if you know you're vulnerable to gacha, microtransactions, or timesinks.

yeah, yeah, i know he mostly redeemed himself and didnt even end up being a weapons manufacturer in the end like his daddy (assuming the new asticassia isnt basically the elite's military training grounds like it was at the beginning), but god guel was such a fucking asshole

in this moment, suletta's like "this is nothing like my fair use expired copyright mangas"

there's no such thing as an ethical capitalist, but sarius definitely didn't like the way delling was running things

prospera was at least a tragic figure, but we never really got to know what the hell made delling the way he is. like is he just some stupid war veteran with ptsd who lost his wife? either way, don't care. he was an asshole for everything he did to miorine and just irredeemable in my eyes lol

funny how suletta talking about her mom is what gets miorine to be a little bit kinder to her in this scene just because of her own mother. yeah prospera was manipulative with suletta and it was her idea for suletta to go to asticassia, so that makes it a little funny that talking about prospera here is really what in the end allows miorine to open up her heart to suletta. sorry, miorine, guess suletta was kind of right huh?

sorry, lauda's just another character that will never be likeable to me either. he's just an asshole on top of being a total moron

yeah, i wasn't gonna skip the slapping (editing my word-use here because i think saying sp**k got my original post for this episode community labeled... which i know now is not why because it got labeled AGAIN!!! and i still don't get why) but dang look at miorine's reaction to that. i still haven't decided if this is the moment miorine takes romantic interest in suletta for standing up for miorine or at the end of the duel later on this episode when she actually makes good on her promise

we didn't get a kiss and we didn't get the wedding on-screen, but i am so so happy these two ended up married in the end and that they're both so obviously in love with each other

ok finished the dlc (not 100% yet though) lol so here's my thoughts

positives:

INFINITE FLIGHT IS SO NICEEEE GETTING AROUND AREAS WITH A LOT OF CLIFFS DOESN'T FEEL LIKE A CHORE ANYMORE

the synchro machine is so cool. so cool. it's so much less restricted than i thought it would be, like as far as i can tell the only restrictions are that you don't really have any vertical mobility, and you can only do it in the terarium. i also imagine it'll be huge for shiny hunting things like minior since it makes auto battling so much smoother. also minior is back and that's another positive :D (EDIT: nevermind about the shiny hunting thing, just learned that your pokemon WILL kill shinies while using it. also now that i think about it, if you found a shiny while in sync mode you wouldn't be able to catch it anyways since when you exit sync mode you go back to your trainer's position and the shiny would despawn. still good for getting 60 ko's in outbreaks though. btw yes i learned this the hard way BUT fortunately i did think to save before trying it so the sacrificial shiny deerling has been caught)

i do like that bbqs give an incentive to just run around and do things you normally wouldn't, instead of just fast travelling everywhere. another thing that makes getting from place to place less tedious, since you feel like the journey is working towards other things on top of just getting where you need to be

the music!!! the music!!!

i immediately fell in love with all the elite four members lmao like their designs and personalities are so fun

the story is pretty good too! definitely not as good as the base game but either way, these games kept strong with the writing all the way through imo (by pokemon standards, anyway. lol)

the new pokemon designs are so cool!!! i think there's 3 i still haven't seen yet but i'm looking forward to them!

negatives:

THE RETURNING LEGENDARIES ARE SHINY LOCKED. WHY. if it weren't for the synchro machine and the fact that they play their original battle themes, i would have literally 0 incentive to encounter them (and i'm aware that that's just a me thing but like. come ON). i hope whoever came up with the idea of shiny locking pokemon has a noticeable stomach ache for the rest of their life.

also on the synchro machine, one annoying little thing about it is that you can't use it if you sent out your pokemon while riding ko/miraidon. as in, even if you get off your mount, you still have to retrieve your pokemon and send it back out before it lets you sync. i imagine this is unintended, and i hope they fix it but they don't really have a good track record of fixing small annoyances like this. (edit: nevermind???? i have no idea how it works actually. sometimes it just says you can't and doesn't say why)

i wish switch games would stop making their camera functions send pictures directly to the system's photo album instead of having an in-game album, and then having little repeatable tasks that require you to take pictures. i don't want 700 pictures of swimming pokemon clogging up my sd card, please at least have a "do you want to save this image" prompt or something

and that's all i can say for now! i still have a bunch of side stuff to do but there's my post-credits thoughts :) overall i really like the dlc!!! the negatives are all pretty small and are very much outweighed by the positives for me. just sucks about the shiny locks though >:/

let today = new Date(14 January 2023)

Lately (like one week lmao) I have been feeling a bit down about my coding, so I haven't been as active as I'd like to here. I think it's important to also post about my shortcomings and the times that stuff is not just smooth sailing, to show a nuanced image that life is not just super productive and successful all the time. My group project has gone ok, here is (almost) the final site -- still a bit wonky in some parts, and definitively not mobile first lol.

During this project, I felt incapable, and still do to some degree. This was because one member in my team already knows react (the framework we are using) from before, and therefore could advance with the components much quicker than the rest, which left me to mainly do CSS.

Thus it's easy for me to think I haven't really learned anything, and stress about my upcoming assessment next week. In reality -- I have learned so much, about git, github, npm, packages, debugging, managing and working in a team, merging branches, structuring a project and finally: I have also learned a lot of react. Working in tech is much more than hard skills, it's also about the soft skills and problem solving -- something a guest lecturer talked about to us, and I'm planning on making a post about this soon. Looking back at my knowledge from 3 weeks ago when we started, I am so much further ahead in react than I was then! ...At least that's what I'm trying to convince myself, because sometimes it feels like an impossible task, and like I'll never learn to use all of these react hooks.

As a woman in this male-dominated branch, I am always so empowered logging onto tumblr and see you all in this community do such great stuff. It makes me also want to do better, and stay active.

My hope with this post is to show that struggling is ok (mostly to myself), and that we will get back up. A quote which has stuck with me from a podcast about psychology I listened to is: Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional I think it resonated with me because I tend to fall into these abysses of self-pity-suffering when i experience something painful; I want to learn how to better recognize when this happens and make my way up from there, and not get stuck.

This was pretty long, so thank you if you read all of it, and I hope you all have a good weekend, remember to rest and be kind to yourselves!! <3

Also also hopefully this isn’t overstepping or anything but I wanted to let you know that you’re not alone and I really related to your ‘scroll past this’ post :( it’s kind of hard not feeling that way and I do kind of get impostor syndrome too just cause I feel like I can never accomplish anything and I can never make it to people’s expectations of me but honestly I think I just need to be kinder to myself? And you should too! Something I do to remember that I have to be kinder to myself is by imagining my inner monologue being directed to the younger version of myself. I went through a lot when I was a kid and I just know that if I say what I say to myself/about myself to my younger self then it would completely destroy me. And if it would’ve destroyed me then, why wouldn’t it destroy me now? And it’s cause it does. It chips at me, albeit slowly. And then I’ll just absolutely break down one day. But we’re on this earth too short to be hurting and anxious and insecure all the time. When you feel overwhelmed it’s good to just… back away for a bit. Maybe cook, get some ice cream, take a walk in the park, just sit outside and breathe. Ground yourself and remind yourself that although you’re not perfect, no one is. You can always be a happier version of yourself though so just do what feels right at the moment and live in the moment :) I don’t want to downplay your pain at all but I really hope that I could provide at least a smidge of comfort since that’s what I do when I’m really feeling down (esp existential rip) :,)

Ok so it’s a bit complicated but I’ll try and explain to you what happened to my account and why I think it’s flagged, I hope I don’t bore you lmao.

But basically, I’ve gotten a few warning from tumblr already about some of my posts being inappropriate/‘mature’ but I never did anything about them. Then like 2 days ago my account started acting super fucking weird. I can’t access my asks or messages anymore, I can’t leave asks unless I’m on anon or they won’t go through, if I comment or reblog anything I don’t think the creator is notified or it doesn’t show up on the post, none of my recent posts are getting any visibility at all and when I went onto my tumblr on my computer, my custom page had a pop up warning that took over the entire screen and said ‘this blog is potentially mature’

so I’m altogether very confused and I’m assuming it’s because my account has been flagged for something, because I truly can’t think of any other reason why it would be glitching sooo much. I hope this wasn’t confusing or too much information, but I really want to figure it out so maybe you have some ideas too?

so hanasnx is my main blog, my posts would also get mature labels on them sometimes when ppl would report them and tumblr would review them and slap the community label on them for sexual themes. that’s happened to me quite a few times and i still happens to me. the reason my account got flagged was within seconds of an actual porn gif i posted. your account should only get flagged if you post like an actual visual pornographic thing. writing should only get the community labels if anything. i know that’s within the tumblr rules.

when my account got flagged, i was still able to access my inbox and answer the asks. i was still able to send asks to others without having to be on anon and received answers back while flagged.

in the settings in the top right on mobile, all the way down there’s a “visibility” button. click it, and it’ll bring you to a page that says whether or not your blog is explicit. and even if you turn off the function, it’ll turn itself back on bcos tumblr has made it that way. IF that’s what happening to your blog. rn it sounds like it’s just malfunctioning which is definitely something you should contact support about.

i do remember when my account got flagged my traction took a huge hit. things like my posts and my account barely got any interaction at all. but i was still able to comment/reblog things and get answers back. and also that the “this blog is potentially mature” screen would pop up.

i remember it took me a couple days to gather my bearings when it first happened and start to figure things out. you said it’s been like this for 2 days already and since it hasn’t straightened itself out you should definitely contact support. when i looked, the only way to contact tumblr is through their support option in tumblr help. they don’t have a number or anything like that. but i can’t tell you they’d be prompt with their response. the only time they responded to me was a month and a half later (when my account first got flagged) saying they made a mistake and they’ve fixed it.

ok, well im hoping to get an email from comic con saying im in for working there like a week and a half from now (for 4 days). fingers crossed. if i get it, im gonna save money (i already didn't spend anything this last week so yeah)

also, im gonna be hella focused on school stuff for one class throughout this month, then next month, finish my last class and then boom party (aka do my next two classes lol)

but i'll finish my first textbook reading tomorrow, then move onto the next one and go through that class's reading

Also I haven't read every post so I'm not sure if this has been done yet and I haven't started rewatching it yet, but I'm not worried about spoilers so if it can't be avoided go ahead.

Anyway! So I was just wondering what the paladins (and Allura and Coran if that's ok) would do for a first date a potential SO they really liked.

☆ he’s probably one of the most chill date-planners of all of the paladins tbh. and when i say date-planner, i mean he is LITERALLY someone who plans his dates. everything that they do, what they’ll buy (if needed), what they’ll do...unfortunately this man may come off as a bit annoying because of this, but trust me, he’s doing it because he wants to make sure you’re happy <3

☆ but tbh...if he’s having a good time he’ll just completely move away from what he had planned. sometimes he’s aware that he can be kinda uptight with the things he does and whatever happens that makes you happy then he’ll go along with that. which is why he’d probably do something more relaxing, like dinner and maybe a movie.

☆ he definitely insists on taking care of the check, no matter if the two of you are having a sit down lunch or getting takeout, and will probably buy any snacks or drinks that you two want for the movie, heh.

☆ it doesn’t really matter if you guys are in a theater or at home, as long as it’s dark then this man has absolutely no problem with slinking an arm around you and pulling you close, holding your hand during an action or horror sequence if you need it, or maybe even kissing you during a more romantic moment. he’s a bit shy about showing affection at first, especially in a public place, but if it’s dark and nobody can see then he’ll be more okay with it.

☆ he’ll probably try to kiss you on the first date lol. it’s more likely than not that he’ll get all awkward and mess up, but as long as his lips end up meeting yours then he considers it a win

☆ okay, so we all know for a fact that this boy is super flirtatious and likes to flaunt the fact that he’s a ladies man. but actually, when it comes down to ACTUALLY becoming romantically involved with someone he can get, like?? REALLY awkward?

☆ he’s a bit hesitant about asking his crush out on a first date, and he cannot hide his excitement if they accept. he probably likes to wing his dates a lot, but when it comes to the first one, he wants to think of what they can do together because he doesn’t want to mess up.

☆ he’d probably take his s/o swimming! probably at the beach since he likes the salt water, and it’s probably attributed to where he grew up. he also absolutely has a swimmer’s body so it’s likely that he’d be incredibly agile in the water. he’s more one to leisurely swim, no matter if he’s in a pool, lake, or ocean, but sometimes he’ll challenge his s/o to a race (which he’ll probably end up cheating at).

☆ he probably starts a random water fight too and slaps you with a noodle just to rile you up. it turns into this massive water battle that leaves you both exhausted and lying on the sand, panting and laughing together as you try to awkwardly hold hands

☆ he probably takes you for a sunset stroll on the beach just to look at the tide turning orange. he probably also tries to kiss you but randomly screws up, like maybe his nose hits your forehead when he leans in with his eyes closed? yeah he’s not as suave as he thinks he is, he’s definitely awkward but you still find it cute

☆ unsurprisingly he is? SUPER shy about asking his crush for a date? i mean the two of you absolutely need a break fighting the universe when you can catch one, y’all are bound to be exhausted. but he KNOWS that the two of you need a moment to breathe, and in the end he’ll be thankful he did this

☆ he’s a blushing and stuttering mess, that’s for sure. it takes him probably forever to say it, but he asks to just take his s/o for a ride in the black lion (after shiro’s disappearance, or the red one, it depends on the time) just to take in the sights. he promises allura he won’t stray far from the castle but knowing him he probably will and may need a wormhole to get back

☆ he just asks you to sit back and enjoy the ride, and he probably was too since it felt like the lion was moving completely on its own, as if it knew what the two of you were doing there

☆ keith is incredibly romantic and sweet in private, so be expected to be given a ton of kisses and hushed compliments under his breath. about how much he enjoyed spending time with you, how much you mean to him and how lucky he feels to have you in his life.

☆ believe it or not he actually has a lot more confidence than lance!! sure, he may end up a bit of a blushy and stuttery mess if his crush confesses to him first or acts romantic, but he trusts himself to go with his instincts

☆ he probably asks for you to come over and spend the evening with him as he cooks some of his best and most delicious meals for you. he likes cooking to bring people together, so he’d definitely do it to bring the two of you together and to impress you with his cooking skills of course!

☆ if his s/o is also a good cook then the whole thing will probably turn into this all out cooking war that took months, just to see who could impress who more with their skills

☆ he definitely will make the most romantic dessert though. also maybe a huge bowl of spaghetti that you two end up sharing and it all turns into that one scene from lady and the tramp lol. that’s probably how you two ended up kissing in the first place anyways, just ended up eating the meal together and liking it so much that the both of you lost touch with your surroundings and ended up kissing on accident xD

☆ he’ll probably make you chocolates or cakes as well on valentine’s day or just as a random show of kindness to cheer you up if you need it. it doesn’t have to be on a date, just whenever he feels like lifting your spirits.

☆ she is definitely one of the more awkward paladins when it comes to romance, besides keith, of course. she’d probably be the one to be asked out by her crush, which was very surprising to her.

☆ she’d probably stress about what to do since she doesn’t have much experience with this kind of thing, but as it turns out, since the two of you have similar interests, she’d probably ask if you wanted to just hang out and play video games together and you’d likely be more than happy to do so.

☆ if you weren’t familiar with it then she’d definitely introduce you to killbot phantasm, which of course is her favorite video game franchise. if you were, they you two would probably just end up playing it anyways, probably starting a new world together and working through it.

☆ as i stated in my minecraft headcanons, she isn’t much of a cheater, but she’s incredibly skilled in combat. there’s something about the way she plays that makes it so she can escape without getting too much damage done to her, so she’s always prepared to come to your rescue if you need it, even if she’s getting overwhelmed by an entire group of hostiles or enemies.

☆ she probably wouldn’t try to kiss on the first date. she tends to take these things slowly and see how it all feels before she tries something intimate like that.

☆ like pidge, allura isn’t overly versed in romance either. she’s fine with smaller acts of intimacy, but prefers to take things slowly. however, she may turn head over heels quickly if someone expresses their feelings towards her.

☆ she’s someone who likes to relax and take in the atmosphere when it comes to moments with people she’s fond of, so maybe a nice relaxing walk in the park or even a slow drive just to take in the scenes.

☆ as someone who’s not familiar with a lot of earth flora and fauna, she enjoys learning about flowers and plants and even some of the wildlife. she’ll probably want to stop to smell all of the flowers just to see which one reminds her the most of the altean juniberry.

☆ the date probably ends with you two relaxing on a bench watching the sun set, and she’s absolutely amazed by the beauty of earth sunsets. how everything turns orange, painting the horizon and the earth with pinks and browns and oranges. she’d comment about how beautiful it is and how much it makes her miss altea, how lucky you are to have such a beautiful home.

☆ he isn’t one to put much thought into romance or dates in the first place. he prefers to focus on keeping allura safe before anything, but of course, if he comes across someone he just can’t keep his mind off of, then he’ll just become absolutely smitten with them.

☆ he’s kind of awkward at first, but in the end he’ll be SO HAPPY that he asked them out. he’d be more like “do you want to maybe go do something together” instead of asking them out on an actual date. but if it feels like a date then he’d consider it an accomplishment.

☆ as a first date, he’d definitely take them to, you guessed it: THE SPACE MALL. he’ll show them around to all of his favorite places and stands and may end up getting distracted by a stand that sells really cool weapons or antiques.

☆ he’s not a massive video game player, but he’d be more than happy to accompany you to a stand that sells limited edition cartridges and disks for the gaming systems you do have on the ship. but trust me, as soon as this man gets hooked on a video game, he gets HOOKED. he will come by and ask you if you want to play a level with him at one of the WORST possible times.

doesnt know what to say, so he almost pulls you into a hug before you move out of the way. something you never did.

"don't... please. it never works out in the end." you shake your head, facing the other way. "for me at least."

"..we could work together, no?" he tried, still oblivious about your feelings towards him.

"only if you're willing to cross your moral boundaries," you looked back and tilted your head. taking a deep breath, you continued, "but you know that neither of us are willing to do that."

he couldn't say anything, because as much as he hated to admit something for once, you were right about that. at this point, he would've thought that literally any extent would've been fine to reach to bring you back.

yet in multiple situations where he's doubted himself before, theres always a line he will never cross.

"...i wish you the best. treat her well because i worked hard." you walked away without him stopping you this time. i worked hard. not we worked hard.

even if you had honestly felt that way, there was no chance the old you wouldve actually voiced that.

I’ve been holding off on making this post because I wanted to try it out myself and get settled in and make sure everything went okay, but seeing as I’ve gone ahead and updated my site and everything I thought now might be a good time to start talking about this publicly!

If you’ve known me for more than five minutes you know I fucking hate Webtoon, like, a lot. Every aspect of it disgusts me to the core of my being, and while Webtoon is the ugliest version of them the aspects that I hate also extend to basically any comic aggregate site. I hate that they treat artists like content robots, I hate that they treat comic readers like morons who aren’t capable of engaging with complex stories, I hate that they actively try to strip away all the cool parts of indie comics by cultivating sterile and impersonal environments that discourage artistic experimentation and unique expression.

So! I hope you’ll be interested in what I have to say about this new platform that’s (hopefully) going to be out of alpha this summer. If you think you like reading comics on Webtoon, I really encourage you to check out Dillyhub once it launches. That’s the short version, but I have a LOT to say about this! So I’m putting the rest of this under a cut.

Full disclosure, I’m not getting paid or anything for this. The creative outreach at Dillyhub contacted me a few weeks ago asking if I’d be interested in having Kidd Commander be one of their launch titles when they go live this summer. I was hesitant at first, since I actively distrust anything claiming to be For Creators at this point, but they answered my pushy questions patiently and everything seemed on the up and up so I gave it a shot; I’ve been needing a mobile mirror for KC anyway. Eventually they invited me to the alpha creator discord, where they’ve been working directly with all of us artists to improve the platform, and now to be honest I’m REALLY excited for this thing to get off the ground. Nobody asked me to make this post, but since I’ve spent years whining and bitching about how other services do wrong by their creators, I thought I’d talk about this one that’s doing things right.

So, the biggest advantage this site has for creators over others in my opinion is that it. Treats us like individuals, regardless of follower count lmfao. If you’re a new person just starting out with your new webcomic, here’s what webtoon does for you:

Note: you don’t get a custom banner, you don’t even get to choose the solid color it is. That big circle icon is ALSO the image that shows up in searches, but everywhere else on the site it’s a 100x100px square, so you have to choose whether you want it to look good as a giant circle at the top of your comic’s page OR whether you want to look good in search results. Which, by the way, is the ONLY way for people to find you if you’re not partnered. And that’s it! You have no monetization options, you won’t show up on the genre pages, and when someone DOES stumble across your page it looks super unprofessional. Good Luck!

Now here’s my Dillyhub page(s):

You don’t get a static banner and one icon, you get a whole carousel banner with as many images as you want front and center as soon as you get to the project page. You get seven (custom!) genre tags, as opposed to Webtoon’s single tag you have to pick from their list, and plenty of room to talk about your work. The episodes are even laid out better, you get a MUCH bigger preview space to work with and they’re nice and big on the bottom half of the page:

you know, like they’re actually presenting ART lmfao.

That’s already an ENORMOUS improvement, but here’s my favorite thing.

o hm that’s a lot of super cushy settings I have for every individual episode, but what’s that, Episode Type?

listen, i know this is probably a bit specialized if you’re not a comic maker yourself, but this is a HUGE DEAL. You can post vertically OR page by page! You can even post pages two at a time for double page spreads, or so they read like a physical comic book! AND their specs are really open, as long as the file meets the size requirement you can make it whatever shape you want. You don’t have to reformat all your shit to post here!! I posted the entire first volume of KC STRAIGHT FROM THE PRINT FILES in like half an hour!!! The episodes can also be any amount of pages, you can post a single page or an entire chapter all in one go!

So that’s just the project page for the comic, let’s see what happens when I click on my username there.

Each author gets their own unique page (which you can tack a vanity url to!) to present themselves however they want! You always have the banner at the top, but beyond that you have a ton of options. Among other incredibly useful tools that really should just be bare fucking minimum at this point, like the ability to preview your page on different devices, you start customizing your blank page with this set of widgets,

and from THERE you can customize them MORE, you can promote your patreon or your kickstarter or whatever! Having this creator space ALSO means that if you run several comics, or if you want to promote your comic AND your illustrations, you can just separate them into individual projects! Each with their own page! This is also really nice as a reader because you can subscribe to a creator but you can also just subscribe to specific projects, if you don’t want to get ALL of their stuff in your inbox. It’s so good y’all hh.

Once again, all of this functionality is just THERE as soon as you make your account. You don’t need to be “partnered” or whatever the fuck, you don’t need to meet a certain follower threshold to unlock the ability to operate normally. You get your own creator space to present yourself how you prefer, you get pages for all your projects, you can even set up monetization options (and change them for individual pages IN a project) right from the start.

ok ok let’s compare this to my webtoon page

oh that’s right webtoon just puts your greyed out name at the bottom of each comic and that’s it because human beings don’t make this stuff, my bad lol anyway

Other fun shit that Dillyhub does that makes me feel like they’re people who have actually consumed or made comics on the internet at some point in their lives:

-When you log into the “studio” space, you’re in your creator account. When you log OUT of the studio space, it’s like you swap to a “reader” account, where you can access your pull list and comment on things with a different name and profile icon. Again, maybe only cool if you’re a creator, but if you ARE then you know exactly why this is incredibly useful lmao

-You can set up “hidden” projects, so if you only want certain things to be accessible by certain people or to not show up in searches that’s an option! You have SO much control here it’s great.

-The comment section has moderation options GODDD. You also have a real comment space, you know, so it actually encourages building a community (and a rapport with your community, if you like), and you also can just turn comments off entirely if you want! I haven’t used it much yet, obviously, but it’s been made very clear in the discord that artists want better control over their comment sections and the devs have it on their priority list.

-Absolutely every step of customization gives you a preview before it’s live, so you can easily see what these images you’re posting in different places are going to look like before you beam them to your followers’ inboxes. This includes individual episodes!

-This was sort of in one of the screenshots but it’s important so I’m saying it here too: the option to mark individual episodes as mature or with content warnings, rather than having to mark an entire comic as Mature Spooky Scary Content because of one or two pages getting a bit hairy.

This site is only in alpha right now, and it’s invite-only until they get to beta (for creators; anyone can make a reader account! but they haven’t set up a way to browse comics without direct links yet so) but honest to god it’s already blowing every other site I’ve used clean out of the water. And the staff has been really kind and responsive to us proposing fixes or changes! I will always defend individual websites as being the best option for an indie comic, but everybody’s gotta start somewhere and we NEED something that isn’t Tumblr or Webtoon to fill this role; this site feels a lot more like a symbiotic relationship than any of the other staples available for new creators right now. If you’re a comic reader and you want to see your favorite comics on Dillyhub I’d suggest keeping an eye on this site and once it’s live start poking them to look into it, and if you’re a creator follow their social media and hop in when they open up for anybody to join. I would LOVE to see this site take off as a viable option for hosting and reading comics.
