adopting a cat during the pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a surge in pet adoptions in many countries as most of us are forced to remain in our homes during lockdowns. Many crave for support and companionship during these trying times, especially those of us living alone. People are turning to welcoming fur babies into their lives to fill the gaps left by social gatherings and physical activities which we used to enjoy pre-pandemic.
I, for one, was able to adopt a Male Balinese kitten who I decided to name Tesla. He brought a huge amount of positive energy into my home. He’s a playful and energetic little baby, with blue eyes and white fur, guaranteed to make anyone swoon by his cuteness.
Tumblr media
But of course, the journey to getting Tesla adjusted to a new environment in the middle of a health crisis was not easy. You have to make sure your little furry bundle is not anxious and fearful of his new home, and that he gets to enjoy your company as much as you do his.
Here are some tips I can share on preparing for adopting a cat during the pandemic.
1. Be mindful of lockdown restrictions when preparing the essentials
It may have been very easy to buy necessary pet items pre-pandemic, but at this time, you have to be mindful of pandemic restrictions in your localities. First, you must prepare a checklist of the basic items you’ll need. For a cat, you will need a cage, a litter box, cat food, a few toys, a carrier, a food bowl, and a scratching post, to name a few. You do not have to buy them all at once, but always assess which items are most needed at a given time.
Consider buying things online if there are strict lockdown measures in your area. If you want to go to a pet store so you can personally check out the items, just find the nearest one in your area and make do with whatever’s available at that store. Groceries usually offer basic items for pets like cat food or litter.
But always keep in minds that we are still living in a pandemic and even pets can get infected. So only leave your homes when necessary.
Tumblr media
2. Buy deodorizer for your cat’s litter and place the box strategically in your home
Since you’ll be spending most of your time indoors, it’s very important to keep cat litters fresh and deodorized.
Since I live in a loft-type studio unit with no balcony, I chose to place my cat’s litter box inside my own bathroom, right beside my toilet. But, ideally, a cat’s litter box should be placed somewhere with good air circulation.
You must also choose a kind and brand of litter that works best for you. For Tesla, I use the clumping cat litter, but others would recommend the Tofu kind. Of course, it depends on your and your cat’s needs and preference.
Cat litter deodorizing spray or powder may also come in handy. I use the Arm & Hammer products as they work almost instantly in killing the foul smell of my cat’s poop and pee.
Tumblr media
3. Keep your cats busy indoors
Luckily, cats prefer the indoors, so they are perfect quarantine buddies. Still,  it’s very important that your cat never runs out of things to do inside the house. Buy them toys or scratching posts to encourage them not to play with your household items like your sofa or electrical wires when they get bored.
Also keep in mind that even though we get to stay with our pets 24/7 at this time, we might still end up busy when working from home.
You may want to consider buying toys that are interactive like feather wands. Whenever you take a break from work, play with your cats a bit and shower them with love and attention. And when it’s time to leave them alone, give them toys that they can play with on their own like small balls or stuffed animals.
Tumblr media
4. Schedule visits to the vet
It’s best to have a schedule for your vet visits especially during this pandemic so you can prevent long lines. Though there are mobility restrictions, do not skip your vet appointments. Remember that our pets can also be vulnerable to diseases and it is best to keep them healthy and protected at all times.
If vet clinics are not accessible, there are home remedies you can try if ever your cat is sick or if they need deworming. Just make sure that you get your information from a credible source and you closely follow instructions to make sure you are not doing anything harmful to your kitty.
Tumblr media
5. Just enjoy the ride
Though you are currently limited to the four corners of your home, you can use this time to be creative in forming bonding activities with your fur babies.
Some cat parents are learning how to groom their own cats themselves as their local pet salons are closed during quarantine. Your kitties can also join you for Netflix and chill. Just make sure you have some treats ready if they go hungry in the middle of it.
Tumblr media
One of my favorite moments with Tesla was when he finally learned how to fetch. I began training him to do this trick when he was three years old using his favorite toys. I learned how to train him by watching youtube tutorials and reading other blogs. I have to admit that I was a #ProudMomma the first time he was able to fetch me a small plastic ball; the only item he can carry using his mouth at the time.
Tumblr media
That’s it for now! Have fun with your furry and adorable quarantine buddies!

Everything of mine by rei_c (Steter, Teen Wolf)
"I've been sleeping a lot," Stiles says. "I'm not eating. I don't have any energy. My mind isn't working as fast as it used to. I feel run down. Breathing hurts, sometimes. My hair's started to fall out. My muscles spasm. And before you ask: yes, they've run tests. I went to the hospital over in the Valley and they checked everything -- ruled out everything. The most they can come up with is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome but I don't fit all of those symptoms and --."
He stops there, looks down, away from Peter's eyes. "What?" Peter asks, gently.
It takes a moment for Stiles to steel himself, to meet Peter's gaze, to say, "I know what it is. Why I'm sick, I mean."
"Please, Stiles," Peter says. "Tell me."
or
When the nogitsune and Stiles split, their bodies got mixed up and torn apart, leaving Stiles to inhabit a completely magical construct. He needs an anchor to the physical world in order to survive and when he can't wait any longer, he goes to Peter Hale.
This was so lovely. I really loved the change in dynamics, that Stiles was the one with all the power. Plus, post-nogitsune fall out? So much win.

i have always been the storm by stilinskisparkles (Sterek, Teen Wolf)
"You’re all headed out to Oklahoma in a week.”
Derek snaps his head up, stares at him in horror, “No, boss.”
“Yes,” Finstock insists in a steely voice. “The NSSL have been on at us for a year about some decent exposure, and I think you’re just the team to do it.”
“I haven’t done weather since college,” Derek protests.
Boyd snorts again, presumably because he’s thinking back to the time when Derek and the weather last collided and he…. well, didthe guy into the weather for a brief, wonderful, terribly foolishtime. But, Boyd needs to shut up before Derek punches him on the nose.
I just really loved how fluffy and sweet this was. Very lowkey angst and fantastic friendships all around.

A kissing game goes horribly wrong.
(Or a high school AU, in which Stiles's love saves Derek from the clutches of Kate Argent.)
Note: Chapter one is the experimentally formatted original. Chapter two is the edited version with conventional formatting.
High school fluff and angst and Derek being adorable and Stiles pining and it was perfection.
*** anchor by thegeminisage (Dargent, Teen Wolf)
Derek insists on coming along with Chris Argent and the Calaveras on the hunt for Kate, so he can see her dead for good. While following her trail back to Beacon Hills, they come to understand some hard truths about both each other and themselves, and struggle to find the reason why, after losing nearly everyone they've ever loved, they're still here.
I loved loved loved this. The slow build, the way Derek dealt with his sexuality and need to be close to Chris. Chris dealing with his trauma. The delicious slow fall for each other--it was gorgeous.

steady hands by thegeminisafe (Dargent, Teen Wolf)
Twenty-four hours after the death of his sister, Chris Argent wakes in Derek Hale's loft with his hands trembling too badly to load and fire a gun, and no matter what he does, he can't make them stop. He made a promise to protect Beacon Hills in Allison's stead, but now he has to decide how he carries on her legacy when he doesn't know if he can fight, if he can ever lay his guilt to rest, and if he's truly capable of doing good when he has already done so much harm.
This fic. It was so good?? I love when falling in love with someone doesn't fix everything. Because sure, they're together--this is a direct followup to Anchors--but Chris is still so fucking damaged and it's so damn GOOD. Read it, friends.

breathing you in by lavenderlotion (Steter, Teen Wolf)
“Good morning, kiddo,” his dad said, and the words hurt.
All Stiles wanted to do was step forward and let his dad hug him, allow his father to give him comfort. His father's hugs had always been all-encompassing, the way he would fold himself around Stiles and hold him as tightly as he could.
Stiles stepped around him, careful not to let foreign skin touch anything that was special to him.
Anything he loved.
I really really loved this. The way Stiles struggles with being in his post-nogitsune body, and the way Peter and his dad take care of him? It's perfect. I want more. SOOOO MUCH MORE.

i could by julibean19 (Steter, Teen Wolf)
Stiles froze. He knew that voice. The way it said his name. He was immediately brought back to a dark parking garage, sharp claws biting into his neck, red eyes flashing, and a jaw practically unhinging to swallow him whole. A shiver ran down his spine as he finally placed it.
The man in the shower was Peter Hale.
What business did Peter Hale have with Stiles? Why was he laying out Stiles’ clothes and making him healthy lunches? Why did Stiles wake up wrapped in his 20,000 thread count sheets with a wedding ring on his finger? What was happening?
This was lovely and angsty. I'm a huge sucker for amenisa fics, and this one was done incredibly well.

once upon a dream by gryvon (Sterek, Teen Wolf)
Stiles has been dreaming of the Hale family burning alive since he was a child. After being locked in Eichen for a year, Stiles learns to keep his visions to himself. That doesn't stop him from keeping an eye on Derek Hale while he waits for Kate Argent to make her move. Only watching Derek becomes loving Derek and stopping Derek and Kate from getting together turns into Stiles dating Derek Hale. He's in love with Derek but his visions haven't stopped, only now he has to watch Derek die with the rest of his family. He'll do anything to keep that dream from becoming reality.
This was lovely. Just so lovely.

mangata by aretemis69 (Sterek, Teen Wolf)
The place chosen for the speed dating is nice, close enough to the shore that the sun warms the shallow waters and washes everything in blinding white light. Long, thin shadows crawl all over the hills, dancing over pinkish sand and pale rocks, following the swirls of the surface.
When he looks around, Stiles can see various spots marked out with colorful stones, all organized in a loose circle and numbered with small shells. In the center of it all is a massive signboard in human plastic, glinting under the sun.
It is, objectively, the nicest place Stiles has ever been this miserable in.

Or the Sterek mermen speed dating AU where Stiles is unlucky in love (until he isn't).
This is such a lovely little fic. The worldbuilding is beautifully done and the sweet pining is perfection.

the darkness inside by isthatbloodonhisshirt (Sterek, Teen Wolf)
The sheriff watched him for a moment, then he sighed and turned slightly. He reached out to open a cabinet door beside him, and pulled out a shelf. It was on a track, so it rolled out of the cabinet fairly easily, and held a small CCTV. Derek frowned and inched his chair to the side a little bit so he could get a better angle.
He was looking at a teenager, or someone at least young enough to be the same age as Scott. He was sitting on a bed in what looked to be a larger room, the area he was in surrounded by four glass walls, with his legs crossed and head tilted.
He was also staring directly into the camera, as if he knew someone was watching. A creepy smile slowly slid onto the teen’s face, and he held up one hand, wiggling his fingers in a slow, eery wave.
Derek felt his mouth run dry. He didn’t know who this kid was, but he didn’t like him.
“Who is that?” he asked quietly.
“That,” said the sheriff, “is my son.”
This? This is the perfect nogitsune possession fic EVER. It's gorgeously done and the way Derek can tell the difference between Stiles and Nogitsune is heart-wrenchingly perfect.

could frame thy mortal by orphan_account (Steter, Teen Wolf)
It’s normal. Spending every waking second watching Hale is normal. In many ways, Hale is his whole universe: tracking his movements, waiting for what he does next, wondering what he’s thinking. The only outside stimulation he gets otherwise is the shower visits, and even then it’s only when Chris is the one taking him that he gets any engagement.
Stiles knows Hale like he knows the water pipe. The sixty two bars that line the side of their cage. Like the minute of cold water that hits Stiles’ skin before the heat finally comes in the shower block. "
Held in an Argent facility, never knowing who he can trust, Stiles pays for his survival with the only currency he has.
I loved what Stiles is, and how far he'll go to survive and Peter in general is perfection. It's gorgeous.

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Shadowhunters (TV) Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Magnus Bane/Alec Lightwood Characters: Alec Lightwood, Magnus Bane Additional Tags: Cats, Fluff, Slice of Life, Magnus Bane Is Quite Magical Summary:
It starts with one
ONE.
When Alec walks into Magnus’ apartment, he’s immediately attacked. Something tiny but aggressive attaches itself to his boot, nearly making him trip. Suprised, he drops one of the bags filled with food he brought from the deli-shop—he thought he could try his hand at paella tonight—but it never makes it to the ground.
“What happened to Shadowhunter reflexes?” Magnus asks, snapping his fingers to magick the grocery bags away, hopefully to the kitchen.
“They didn’t expect a cat?” Alec lifts his boot, a tiny, fierce, grey ball of rage still hanging on. “At least I think it’s a cat? It’s a bit of a runt.”
Magnus points a finger to Alec, then bends down to whisk the kitten away. “Don’t offend the Chairman.”
“What kind of name is Chairman?” Alec follows Magnus to the living area, the grey menace glaring at him from where it’s perched on Magnus’ shoulder.
“His name is Chairman Meow.”
Alec snorts, charmed despite himself. He toes off his shoes, settles next to Magnus on the couch, keeping a respectful distance from the ferocious creature that's still looking at him as if it's going to murder him any second now, safely sitting on Magnus' lap.
Alec carefully offers his fingers to the kitten so it can sniff them. "Are you going to let me kiss my boyfriend?" he asks. "It's really important to me I get to kiss him, so I'll play with you later if you let me."
Magnus stops petting the kitten. "Important, huh?"
Alec looks up at him. "Very. It's the best part of my day."
"Then I think you should kiss him, danger or no danger." Magnus is grinning at him, and Alec loves him like this, carefree, a little bit silly, and happy.
So risking life and limbs, he leans over and kisses Magnus until they're both slightly out of breath, and the kitten has escaped Magnus' lap to explore the rest of the loft.
Just as well, because Alec hasn't kissed Magnus enough yet today.
SEVENTEEN.
Alec knows Magnus is somewhere in the loft—there’s a potion simmering in his workplace, and he never leaves them unattended long ever since Julius Catsar was turned blue after he managed to fall into a cauldron—he just can’t find him. He’s not in the bedroom or the kitchen, where Alec shoos Bouddhicat and Marie Purrie of off the counter despite the betrayed looks they throw him. Which means Magnus is probably on the roof. It’s been raining for three days straight, so Alec has no idea what he’s doing up there, but maybe the potion needs some freshly fallen rain or something like that. When he opens the door to the roof however, it’s not the winter downpour over the drab New York skyline that greats him, but singing birds and a bright blue sky.
Alec blinks. There’s green everywhere. He’s standing on moss, there’s some kind of bush growing against the brick wall of the building, and an actual tree at the edge of the roof, next to the balustrade. Magnus is sitting on a bench in the shade of the tree, looking like nothing is out of the ordinary.
“Darling,” he greets Alec, without taking his eyes from what he’s looking at.
Alec follows his gaze and gasps when he spots him. Below them, where normally the roof of the neighboring building is, lies what looks like an actual jungle. It spans the roofs of about three buildings, copious greenery only broken up by a small brook, water splashing softly, and a small meadow, grass speckled with flowers in an explosion of color. Basking in the sun, ears twitching, lies a huge black panther, spread out comfortably on a dark rock.
“Magnus,” Alec breathes in amazement, otherwise speechless. He sits next to Magnus, stunned.
“Don’t worry, the whole thing is glamoured, no one will notice it’s there,” Magnus says as if that’s Alec’s only worry. The panther doesn’t seem to hear them, or doesn’t care they’re there, but continues to enjoy the sun.
“Ok, but- Why?” Alec is at a loss for words. He knows Magnus loves cats, they’ve got an apartment filled with them as proof, but even for Magnus, this seems kind of much.
Magnus shrugs. “Dahlia called. She’s got a weakness for mistreated animals, probably because she spent so much of her youth with a traveling circus in the early 1900s. She rescued him from some kind of black market breeder, where he’d been living in a cage. She’s planning to get him to a rescue center, but while she sets that up, I’m taking care of him.”
Below them, the panther finally has enough of his sunbathing, and leisurely jumps of the rock. He doesn’t look mistreated, looks healthy and well-fed as far as Alec can tell, but maybe Magnus’ friend has had him for a while. Its movements are graceful, strides long and fluid, tail swishing. Alec can’t help but be mesmerized.
“He’s beautiful,” Alec whispers, watching as the panther climbs a tree, all strength and grace, almost disappearing entirely in the foliage.
“He is,” Magnus sighs. “I was just thinking he reminds me of you.”
Alec flusters and mock-elbows Magnus in the side, still not used to compliments like this, no matter how many of them Magnus doles out. He scoots a little closer though, until their thighs are touching and he can grasp Magnus’ hand to press a kiss against his knuckles. They watch the panther settle down onto a thick branch, black fur hard to see in the shade, but the swishing of its tail betraying its location.
It’s peaceful, sitting here on a bench next to Magnus, enjoying the view. Peaceful and a little bit magical, partly due to the fact they’re looking at a jungle hidden on Brooklyn rooftops, but mostly thanks to Magnus’ company.
“So, what did you name it?” Alec eventually breaks the silence.
Magnus studies his rings, in an attempt to look innocent, but Alec knows him, knows he wouldn’t have been able to resist naming something that magnificent residing at the loft, even if it’s only temporary.
Alec pulls him into his side, until he can wrap his arm around Magnus’ shoulders and kiss the top of his head. “I know you named him something ridiculous, like Napoleon Bonapanther or something.”
Magnus snorts, pulls himself loose a little to give Alec the side-eye. “None of my cats have ridiculous names, and I’d never stoop to Napoleon Bonapanther, Alec, please.”
Alec rolls his eyes and pulls Magnus back again. They’re both smiling though, and Alec feels suddenly, terribly, incredibly in love. It’s moments like these, when they’re teasing and cuddling during a quiet night, that Alec truly realizes how magical their love is. It’s something precious, and he treasures every moment.
“Its name is Genghis Khat,” Magnus says, grinning.
Alec laughs, then kisses the smile on Magnus' lips, keeps kissing him until there’s just hitched breaths and love between them.
Below them, the panther sleeps on.

Health Anxiety
I am currently writing this blog entry at 1AM Tuesday morning of March 30th. Hey, thank goodness March is almost over. I like to call it “March Madness” with a side joke, “Ides of March” simply due to the bad things that tend to happen to me in March. Every year. The month of March. I’ll admit, though, that this March has been more delicate with me. THANK YOU GOD AND UNIVERSE!!! Truly, thank you! It could also be the fact that I’ve become more reclused lately. And in this post, I will get into that. I typically avoid March all together because of the bad happenings. So, this month I’ve played it more sage. Thankfully March is almost over and I can feel free to get on with my life. Yes, a month can have that much impact on me. Yes, anything can have that much impact on a life. It’s a pattern of bad events that continually fall on very specific times that make a person become “superstitious”. Oh, the irony. Or maybe March genuinely has it out for me. Who knows.
My fiancé’s gallbladder went kaput recently, although I can’t even recall if that was the end of February or beginning of March. I want to say March. Nevertheless, he hasn’t had surgery yet because the surgeon’s will not pick up their phones or call back. Yay! Not. Anywho, it was really scary. He wasn’t eating for approximately two weeks straight. He could barely hold down liquids. His urine (TMI?) was dark brown. The dehydration was real and I was so sure I would lose him. When I rushed him to the ER one night, it was confirmed his blood was clean, but his gallbladder was not. After a while of nursing him back to health and waiting for next steps from doc (which we still wait on impatiently...), he started to be able to eat again. I was fully prepared for the lifeless fiancé to continue being lifeless until his gallbladder was removed, but I was proven wrong. He got better. Obviously the thing still needs to come out. Anyway, the huge health scare triggered me in a way I didn’t think I could be. I stopped being able to eat as much due to stress. Guys, I was not sleeping while he was so sickly. I would lay nearby in the loft we have and watch his every move. I’d start to fall asleep, he would twitch or move, and I’d jolt awake. I was so afraid. When he randomly and suddenly became better, and I could see that my lover was back to life, I didn’t know how to feel or what to think. I was so ready in my mind for the absolute worse. Perhaps that’s my problem... Something bad happens and i go into full self defense mode. Full. And yes, I have PTSD, mostly from loss, and I do get occasional flares. This definitely flared it big. I did not want to lose someone I love so dearly...again. I’ve had so much of that in my life in my 20s. I can’t take the heartbreak! So the events of my fiancé’s sickness triggered a PTSD flare. With that came the heightened anxiety. With my heightened anxiety, I tend to get these massive episodes of health anxiety. Yep, good ole hypochondria... PS making jokes about “hypochondriacs” over silly shit is awful and hurtful. It’s a real problem for some, including me, and it effects people’s lives. Not only that, but we get a bad wrap - made out for everything we say to be “overreacting”. That’s not it at all. Our minds tell us we’re dying, we truly believe it. The pain in our chest tells us our heart is failing, we truly believe it. Stomach pain? God forbid! We are having an intestinal blockage. Yep, it’s real and it destroys. So please be gentle.
With that said, I began having a huge health anxiety flare. Days passed and it slowly came on. So slowly that I didn’t even realize what was happening. Until... any random sensation in my body began to startle me. I noticed everything immediately; things I typically wouldn’t. A strange feeling or movement in my guts? Pain in my chest? What side of my chest? Is it my left? Oh not now, my heart! What’s strange is these sensations circled around my digestive and heart areas. Nowhere else. Those are pretty important organs, though. Due to this panic that wouldn’t go away, I went to my doctor and got blood work. Everything looked great and healthy on my blood work except for my high triglycerides (that had actually come down as well as my cholesterol, but were still “high”). High triglycerides run in my family. So I start researching what to do for it. Fish oil is a top recommendation. Got the fish oil at 1200mg a pop. Soon enough, hell started to break loose. Gastric attacks daily; whether small or large attacks. Small attacks could be... a pressure or bloat in my upper stomach. Big attacks could be... I can’t breathe because of gas trapped in my upper stomach that moves around my rib cage and stabs inside like a rusty knife. The bloat and dull discomfort was the most frequent symptom. Days and weeks passed and I couldn’t take it any longer. I stopped the fish oil immediately after reading online that it can cause awful indigestion. I wasn’t having the stomach problems like that until the fish oil. I did at times, but nothing compared to when I started taking them. All of these things combined - the gas pain and attacks, plus the random tingles in my chest was enough to convince me that I’ve been dying. It’s been bad. Real bad. I’m currently about a week post-end of taking the fish oil. My stomach feels like a hard rock sometimes, but it’s not as bad as it was. I’ve only now noticed that...the stomach pain comes when I feel anxious. I returned to my doctor more recently to discuss this with her. “Nexium twice a day instead of one” she instructed me. I was taking it once already with no real improvement. And no, the twice a day didn’t seem to do any good. So now I’m here. Thankfully, the pains have gotten better. I’m more calm...but only when I’m alone and isolated. The stomach pains come rushing back when I’m around people or in an uncomfortable setting in public. I went from believing I’m seriously dying to understanding that 1) it was the fish oil’s fault 2) now it’s merely anxiety... and maybe residual from the fish oil. The anxiety level that I’m at now is no longer as much health related as it is understanding that there have been so, so many stressful situations around me that have bothered me too much. My body and mind are running, screaming in circles. I never have time for myself. I’m a private person who gets no privacy. I’m a concerned human that loves the few people I do have, and when they get deathly ill, it takes a toll on me. A huge toll. And I’m coming to terms with the fact that my anxiety has been off the CHARTS lately. I’m noticing how much health and anxiety can be linked and connected. With all of these realizations, it is helping me to ground. With grounding, the symptoms are slowly residing. When you do a little digging and put two and two together, some anxiety issues can become more clear. You can begin to understand yourself better. I know I can now, and I’m thankful. So this is what’s been going on with me. My doctor still wants me to get heart tests JUST to be sure that everything is okay, and potentially a scan of my abdomen to check my intestines. Considering things are better now, I’m not sure that it’s necessary. Although that may just... calm my anxiety further. I have no health insurance, so I have to take medical things slowly and at my pocket’s pace. So in time... We will see how healthy I really am.
Thanks for reading about my health scare, fish oil reaction, and generally caring enough to make it this far in my entry. Love to all, and peace. Blessed be.

The City, Capitalism and Dreams
The Chicago Tribune, today published a piece listing all the times that Donald Trump mentioned Chicago. Obviously he mentioned the city always in the context of lambasting Democrats for “ineffective” administration and pushing the rhetoric of “curbing crime.” But if ever there is a city with so many bewildering meanings, it is Chicago and Donald Trump is not the sharpest tool in the shed to be able to wrap his head around them. But that it perhaps precisely why it haunts Trump so much. The bastion of capitalism, the city of the first skyscraper and the American departmental store, home of the packing and shipping industry, the broadway play—Chicago, workers’ unions, Chicago is about too many things. It is a fetish. This city is a symbol and a spectacle. The references in popular media are laden, and they require slow and quiet unpacking.    I met my Americanist colleague in the park close to my house a few weeks ago. We talked about the city and how it isn’t always the friendliest place for women. She reminded me that as an industrial city, the women who made their way to Chicago historically were not single women but women who accompanied their husbands as they took on traditionally male jobs in the factories. She explained that she often found that single women who made their way to the city were a part of the service working class or ethnic minorities and when they weren’t either of those, they were still struggling in some sense or the other.
This struck me as I thought about the city’s portrayal in in Bojack Horseman. Bojack’s ghost writer and friend Diane, and her colleague, Guy arrive in Chicago to research a huge corporation and conglomerate called the Whitewhale Corp. A shot in the show where the creators depict a tall wavy tower in the Chicago skyline as the headquarters of Whitewhale corp is so apt: a corporate named white whale— devouring smaller businesses and the very sky above the city. Diane and Guy find out how workers’ deaths on the shop floors are covered up by the corp. They eventually fail to make a substantial dent in the power of the corporation as the corporation manages to buy the very media channel that they work for. Ironies never escape the creators of Bojack Horseman who remind us that it is pointless to lament, on anything really. Eventually Diane gains a lot of weight, takes her anti depressants, gets engaged to Guy and moves from LA to Chicago. She is initially irritated by everything being “Chicago-style” but eventually copes with herself in the city. The concluding affect to the Chicago narrative in Bojack Horseman is resignation: you take your pills, you take what you get, and you stop fighting with yourself. It sounds awfully familiar. It is what most of us do but like Diane, we’re newcomers to this city. This is not even our world. Me and many others may very well use this city to thrive in our own ways, but its history and the people who are covered In the layers of its past refuse to be fungible.
Now a part of the Rust Belt (I know this is controversial but I have seen enough rusty under bridges and railroad tracks to believe otherwise), Chicago rode on the back of it’s own deindustrialization. It harbored a post-industrialization economy and embraced a service-economy model. As real estate agencies converted old factory floors into snazzy apartment lofts for those in the “service industry” no one stopped to consider what would happen to the debris of this rebuilding: the human debris. What were these services? and who were they for? Would they make life better for the people who long lived in this city? Almost aways red lined, the city propped up a bedazzling spectacle in its heart of repurposed steel: the bean, the winding bridges around millennium park. But only a 20 minute bus ride from the service industry heartland lived people hurt hard by the fall out of industry and in the blind spot of the city. When the pandemic hit, the most vibrant business areas gained the hollowed look of ghost towns. In the rich neighborhood that I live in, white people ate and drank on outdoor patios as if nothing changed. When the BLM protests erupted white people took their dogs to the dog park free of the crinkles that many of us wore on our foreheads.
There is a price some of us pay for  being acutely aware of our precarity and that is the constant fight we fight: living each day with this awareness. It is so much better not to understand and feel.  If you haven’t experienced precarity in any city, you probably have not paid this price— a toll/a fee of sorts that is intangible. A price you pay in terms of a compromised ability to dream. But those who do not know about this price are often those who are so happy with status quo that they do not have the need for dreams. But I think innovation is immaterial, it happens first in the mind of free people or people who have the desire to be free. But some of us claw our way to cities only to remember that to dream in a city is to open oneself up to the death of dreams. There is something about cities that make us dream dreams that we fear will slip away like a fistful of sand, if you have the luxury to dream in the first place that is. But cities feed on dreams like those of the freed slaves that rushed to this city in the late 1800s. Cities tempt us with freedom. The Great Migration: it was hope that brought so many black people to Chicago. This city offered them so much, most importantly a place to freely lick some of their wounds.
But the death of dreams and promises strike at the core of humans who want to be free. The promises that republics make to citizens let citizens dream for a little but until those dreams are punctured. Hurt humans lash out. They have after all been lured into cages with the promise of freedom. It is only normal. No one is above anger and to demand that the hurt let go of anger is to make an unreasonable demand — the intangible toll that you cannot measure. Trump talks of crime but crime is only a function of normative standards, the breaking of law comes from another normative position of being treated with injustice. In crime is always a desire to tip scales perceived as uneven and stems from anger. Capitalist trickery has no interest in evening the scales, and people cheated by capitalism know this, which is why they are angry. Trump knows all too well that it is anger that drives us— he is after all a peddler of anger. But anger is stronger when when it is historical and old, when  woven in the very fabric of your being by constant denigration: surveillance, cheap food and apathy. Anger is the strongest when there is denial  from the other side to accept that their normative standards are impossible, exploitative. Under the surface of every city is a seething anger. A young black woman from Cottage Grove may move to the Gold Coast but anger doesn’t end.  To feel it and still not lash out is a luxury and a privilege. I found some redemption in this city and sometimes for those of us doing the difficult work of continuing to remain empathetic in the face of heartless cruelty, this is enough. But History reminds us that collective redemptions are rare and the triumph of capitalism is the rendering of stories so sanitized that cities, like shiny steel, can go on as spectacular images, continuing to foster dreams. Some of us peddle in stories. It is how we dream and heal. But the point is: even as we resign to things to make life easier, and God knows we deserve to make our lives easier, we must never forget the debris, the mess, the anger that seethes under cities and stories, to feel it and retell stories of anger is to remain grounded and soulful. That is all we need.

Part 5: the mayhem
Tumblr media
The white noise
“Can you talk me through it?,” Steve urges, his eyes wide with concern. His arms are like a golden cage, their strength and warmth keeping his little birdie safe from harm.
“I went over to Tony to tell him Casey’s got that school play coming up next week and that I’d appreciate it if he could free his schedule and actually attend. We shared a few drinks and he asked me how I was holding up after Pietro’s… you know… Which is when he told me Wanda was working the streets again. So Bucky and I took one of your rides and headed downtown. It’s far too cold to be picking up men and I was going to offer her a place to stay until she gets back up her feet,” you lie smoothly, your voice muffled by the fabric of his shirt. “Poor girl hasn’t been in a right set of mind ever since they murdered her brother.”
“Yeah yeah, I heard about that. It’s a real shame.” His eyes are a soft blue but his tone does not speak of sincerity. “What happened next?,” Steve pressures, looking over to where Bucky is smoking a cigarette.
“A couple of thugs spotted the car,” the brunet shrugs back at him, “I mean, a purple Lamborghini? Man, that’s one hell of a flashy car.”
You entangle yourself from Steve’s hold, his hands resting on your shoulders as he takes in your red-rimmed eyes and flustered cheeks. “One of them, he introduced himself to us and said his name was Rumlow,. He instantly recognised me and said that Tony Stark’s whore has no business here, that this neighbourhood belongs to the Brooklyn mob boss and not a cheating slut that sucks some fancy politician’s dick for a living.”
Sniffling quietly, you turn your attention to Bucky, carding his slender fingers through his long locks. He eyes you curiously, wondering what your next move will be, how you’re going to play this game.
“If it wasn’t for Bucky, I don’t know what he would’ve done,” you cry silently, knowing that once you shed some tears Steve will definitely fall for your deception. Little did he know that after Rumlow and his scum tried to scare you, Bucky handed you to gun that finished them all.
“Thanks for protecting her, Buck,” Steve says sincerely, reaching out to shake Bucky’s hand in gratitude.
“Nah, ‘s nothing.” Bucky waves away Steve’s thank you. “You hired me to protect her, I was just doing my job.”
He drops the remainder of his cigarette to the ground, blowing out the leftover smoke and you cough at the uneasy smell tickling your nostrils, making you gag instantly. He was never much of a smoker when you were younger, occasionally smoking some pot when he got too stressed out. This nasty habit he seems to have picked up afterwards and you hate it. You tried to talk to him about it, but Bucky is Bucky and wouldn’t hear it until you threatened to end your little sexcapades. Men are so easily persuaded with sex.
Steve sends Bucky a dirty look, asking him to leave the two of you to it. “See you tomorrow,” Bucky mutters, a little sparkle in his eyes when they land on you. “You have my number.”
When you hear the door close behind him, you pull Steve in by the collar of his shirt, his lips crashing on yours and he gasps at the sudden contact with your cold and chapped lips before his tongue traces you bottom lip begging for permission. “I need you to fuck me, Steve,” you pant against his plump, kiss-swollen lips. “You know, I’ve been a very bad girl today, Stevie.”
“Oh is that so?,” he lifts an eyebrow in mock surprise, his hands steady on your hips.
You bite your lower lip and pout innocently. “Yes, no lie,” you whisper as you look down shyly and shuffle your feet, Steve’s finger lifting your chin up to meet your eyes, his blue orbs disappearing into a supermassive black hole of desire.
“Then I might need to punish you,” he replies sternly, voice surging with electricity.
“No,” you defy his authority, standing a bit taller as you kick off your high heels causing you to drop a few inches. Your boldness throws him off at first before a predatory glint illuminates his dark pupils.
“What did you just say to me?,” he growls lowly as he pushes you back against the wall, his arms on either side of your head and his body pressed flush against yours.
“No,” you repeat, fisting the material of his clothes and pulling him impossibly closer. “I am going to punish you.” This seems to peak his interest and he stares at you, wide-eyed and extremely turned on by the looks of the prominent bulge prodding your inner thigh.
“I am going to punish you because I’m not just your domestic pussy, I am your wife and you’re supposed to be a good husband.” You emphasis these final words with an angry sneer before Steve’s lips silence you, a deep-rooted moan escaping your vocal chords instead.
Resting your hands on his study chest, you slightly detangle yourself from his passionate hold, tugging eagerly at the material of his shirt while working your magic on the button of his pants. A string of curses escapes your lips when you finally manage to pull down his zipper, your hand gently cupping his balls as you take little Stevie out of his restrictions.
“Y/N,” Steve pants when you swirl your thumb around the throbbing tip of his proud cockhead, biting your lip in anticipation. “I want to try for a baby,” he admits gingerly, his baby blues looking you dead in the eye.
“I’m not on the pill anymore,” you answer earnestly, swallowing thickly.
“I know.”
You’re quick to send him a reply, the plan you set in motion not long ago already paying off. “Fuck me up against the wall.”
Your back collides with the wall while Steve’s hands slowly expose more and more skin until the fabric of your dress pools around your waist and your innocent, white thong is on full display. “My pleasure,” he groans and you gasp when his teeth nip at the sensitive skin of your neck, his tongue darting out to soothe the angry red marks he left in his wake with tender kitten licks.
BUCKY’S POV
I listen how the door falls back into the lock, all kinds of thoughts coming to mind. The way she cries into his chest is sickening, it would’ve even fooled me. It’s safe to say those ridiculously expensive acting classes her dad sent her to were useful after all. Popping one of Sam’s uppers in my mouth, I get into my car and dial Natasha’s number.
“Hey handsome,” she greets me and I have to suppress the urge to roll my eyes at her teasing tone, even though there’s no one around to see it.
“Nat. I’m on my way from the Rogers’ mansion. Be there in five.”
I cut off the call before she’s got the time to say anything else. Her voice is too sickly sweet to stomach without at least one drop of alcohol in my system, too sober for any shit-talking at the moment, especially after witnessing that fine performance Y/N came up with. I really had to bite my tongue and refrain myself from telling Steve what his lovely wifey is up to during his office hours. But I promised Y/N that I wouldn’t and damn it, I love her too much to violate her trust in me. Even though she’d never finish me off like the little cheat I am, trying out the entire fucking Kamasutra with a married woman, I’d still be in some deep shit and I don’t want to lose her again.
And then there’s still the issue with Steve. How the fuck is he going to resolve that problem without stepping on any highly sensitive toes?
Natasha’s place is a short drive into town, a fancy loft she bought with the insurance money she got after that whole ordeal with Bruce. How I know this? Y/N told me on our first night together, when she showed me her soul and I showed her mine in return. God, I can barely wrap my mind around it, the way she’s my breath of life. There’s no Bucky without Y/N.
I’d kill and I’d die for her, I’d do anything for Y/N and her little girl if it meant I could just be with her, or at least be around her for the time being. I just need a good excuse to get rid of that obnoxious husband of her. Agreed, he’s a good-looking fella and a fine chap to hang out with, but I care more about my love for Y/N to further entertain a friendship with Steve. Too bad, maybe in an alternate universe we could’ve been best friends, a universe where I was married to her and not him.
As I park the car just outside Nat’s doorstep, she opens her front door and shoots me a naughty smile once her eyes land on me. She beckons me inside and pushes a glass of scotch in my hands before I make myself comfortable on her couch. Natasha’s interior decorator sure has an affinity with black and white, the whole area seems to have taken over by a monochrome entity, not a spot of colour to be detected, at least not by the naked eye. It’s a whole lot different from Y/N’s house where there are paintings adorning every available surface, giving her residence some charm and some life of its own. But this place? This is just way too clean it gives me the chills.
“So…,” I draw out the ‘o’ to gain her attention which she reluctantly provides me with. That woman is far too whimsical for my taste, one moment she makes hell freeze over and the next she’s hanging on my every word like I’m Jesus Christ in the flesh. “Did you manage to tell her? Was she there, at Tony’s?”
“Yeah, I saw her alright. Bumped right into her in the lobby.” Nat empties her glass in one take. It contained a clear liquid that must’ve been Russian vodka. Boy, with the way that woman can drink I’m surprised she still has a functioning liver.
“I didn’t tell her though. She was preoccupied.” Nat chuckles to herself, remaining very mysterious about Y/N’s intentions for visiting Tony out of the blue. But he doesn’t need to know, he’d rather not know if it meant Tony blowing his brains out. “Y/N said something about Wanda disobeying her, you got any idea what that’s all about?”
“Hmm, yeah, we went to pick that girl up as soon as Y/N came home. Don’t know what she did to get Y/N to see red, but I can make an educated guess. By the way she looked and behaved herself, it seemed that she was selling herself again while Y/N specifically forbade her to do so. The bitch punched me in the face when I tried to drag her to the car,” I groan, pointing at my split lip. “I though Y/N had a mean hook but Wanda sure knows her shit as well.”
“What are we going to do about it? She has to know but after our messy discussion yesterday, I don’t think she wants to hear what I have to say anymore.”
She doesn’t tell him why but he suspects it’s got something to do with Tony again, although he doesn’t ask about it either. Like he said before, what he doesn’t know can’t come back to bite him in the ass. “You do agree that she needs to know?,” he queries, bringing his glass to his lips before adding “Tony and Steve can’t just go behind her back like that.”
Jack Daniels, his favourite. He recognises it as soon as the first drop makes contact with his thirsty tongue. Nat has some good taste. “Even if we don’t know who shot Pietro, she at least has to know the reason why.”
She stares at me with empty eyes, a lazy grin curling the corners of her lips upwards. It’s disturbing how much this woman seems to know, so I take my chances. “Natasha, how long exactly have you known about Peggy?”
She seems taken aback by my question, not expecting me to know about that. After all, it happened long before I came back to town. Nat’s reluctant to answer but does so anyway. “About a year,” she mumbles, hiding her discomfort away behind her glass.
I shake my head in disappointment. “And you kept silent all this time?” There’s an accusatory tone to my voice that wasn’t there before and she huffs at me, the soft rustle of her tight, velvet dress drawing my attention to her as she gets up from the couch and moves towards the bookcase at the other end of the room. Nat pulls out a little black book hidden between an urban dictionary and a hardcopy of the Millennium trilogy, handing it over to me with a smug look in her cold eyes.
“Pietro gave this to me for safekeeping, in case something was to happen to Y/N. Precautions, you know. It contains quite a few gruesome details, not to mention some of those names are respectable members of high society,” she explains as I flip through the pages, amazed at how much incriminating information these pages hold.
“Look, I owe Y/N a lot. She saved me from Bruce as much as she saved me from myself. Now it’s time for me to return the favour and protect her from herself. What do you think she’ll do after she finds out Steve had a hand in Peggy’s untimely death?”
“She’ll probably go mad.”
A laugh escapes her. “She will most definitely go mad and we don’t need a mad mob boss on our hands, now do we Buck?,” she scolds. “We’re already living in purgatory, no need to turn it into a fucking hellhole. I’m already living on borrowed time.”
“You’re already living on borrowed time? What the fuck does that even mean?”
“It means I’ve lost Y/N a long time ago, she just hasn’t realised it yet.”
“Then what is in it for you? What do you have to gain from telling her about Tony and Steve’s covert arrangement?”
“Look,” Natasha reprimands me, her tongue flicking out to wet her bottom lip. “Either she kicks Steve out after she finds out about his dirty little secret or she stays put. If she hasn’t freaked out by then, things can go two ways once we drop that bomb about the whole Peggy ordeal. If she believes it to be the most grand romantic gesture of the century, she’ll stick with the guy like glue. But maybe, just maybe, she’ll reach for the nearest gun and fuck up his sorry ass. In both cases I win because Y/N stays alive, whereas you only win if she kills the poor fucker.”
Her voice wavers the tiniest bit and for a moment I feel for her, the Russian doll with a million mysteries hidden underneath that stoic exterior. People often tend to mistake her for just another booty call, mostly because she refuses to show to the world how much she actually cares. But Natasha Romanova isn’t just every man’s wet dream, she’s the woman that freed Y/N from her lunatic mother and I am grateful for that.
“No matter what, you’ve already won because you have nothing left to lose. You don’t care about your life but you do care about hers. I must say I admire your devotion, Natasha. Who would’ve thought such a stone cold bitch like yourself would have a heart after all?”
“So are you going to tell her about Steve and Tony first, see how she takes the news and then we’ll decide what to do next?,” Nat shoots back, sloshing almost half a bottle of vodka into a large wine glass. She’s going to have a killer hangover if she’s finished with that.
“Yes. But you’re forgetting one tiny detail, I can’t be the one to drop the bomb, she will think I’m just saying it to break her and Steve up,” I reply dryly.
“Well, isn’t that exactly what you’re trying to do?”
“She doesn’t need to know that,” I sneer, emptying my glass in one take and setting it down on the table in front of me, signalling her I’m about to take my leave.
“Sam. He’s the best one to do it. He’s our Switzerland in all of this,” Nat tells me as she turns the key in the lock, revealing the bustling streets behind it. “If there’s anyone who can get away with saying anything to her, it’s Sam. Y/N and I, we might know each other the longest but Sam knows her the best.”
I take out a cigarette and light it, the rush of nicotine surrounding me like a hazy cloud. “I’ll give him a heads up,” I promise.
“Bye Bucky,” she coos after me with a small wave of her hand. “And good luck.”
I give her a tight-lipped smile by means of goodbye, no need to lead the bitch on, before immersing myself in the traffic straight towards Sam’s bar.

25 Modern Spiral Stairs That Will Bring a Stylish Flare to Your Home
Have you seen that curvy and winding staircase that would probably make you a little dizzy when going up and down? Looks pretty, right?

Casa Blanca is no doubt a unique home! Who would think of adding an orange spiral staircase? I admire the courage of the designers and homeowners for arriving at an idea of this kind of stairs. But I applause them more for the excellent outcome!
12. M16 Architetti
M16 Architetti
I don’t know about you but for me, this staircase is definitely a head turner and would be a lovely highlight in the interior. Aside from its choice of materials, its curvy look also deviates from the edged furniture and other modern items in the space.

Adding drawers on the riser are indeed a good way to give the staircase another function! This is indeed very creative, right? 18. Floating Box House

23. 270º Twist
Architech Stairs & Railings
This staircase is a showpiece in a loft house. It is complete with open rise maple treads that are stained dark and round stainless spindles. It is designed with a flared bottom and 2 swooping rail that returns to the floor. It also features a curved support heel that accentuates the look and also gives it a freestanding capability.
24. Casa Bilbaina
Spiral stairs like this one always intrigued me! They actually look like giant sculptures which makes them even more interesting. You can also check out other photos of the Casa Bilbaina.
25. Chenequa House
Architech Stairs & Railings
The Chenequa House features this nice looking staircase with wooden treads. The color and materials used here are coherent with the ones used in other areas of the house. Don’t you love its natural appeal?
These are all lovely! This list actually makes me think of adding a modern spiral stair in my home. Although Feung Shui does not approve of this because it will make the homeowners feel less safe and secure, many people still prefer to use them. Well, one reason could be that not everyone believes in Feng Shui. Another good reason is that the space really deserves this swirling beauty that ascends to the next level of the home. But if you are not a fan of this, you can always use the conventional stairs. Why don’t you take a look at some modern staircase designs with glass railings, this will no doubt give you more ideas for your home’s stairs!
