i'm reading the hunger games prequel at the moment. i had no interest in it for a long time, but somebody whose opinions i value said it was doing some interesting things, so i thought i would give it a try. but what's really striking me about it is how... clunky the writing style is. thg+sequels aren't exactly the most sparkling, beautiful prose but they're sparse and functional in a way that works and feels stylish. this feels, i don't know... juvenile? unpolished? it's surprising, tbh

i tend to be super bothered by lacklustre prose – I think it's bc i don't have a strongly visual imagination, so at no point do books give me a movie in my head, i am always experiencing them as words and not as pictures. that makes it hard to ignore when the words aren't great. but wasn't expecting this one to read so much like how i wrote as a fourteen-year-old. there's so much that could be trimmed back when it comes to describing emotions and thoughts. "he wondered" "he felt" – so many of these words unnecessarily littering the sentences and distancing us from the actual emotions

idk man. whatever i was expecting of this book, i didn't think mediocre sentences would be the main thing bugging me

#favourite lyrics #strawbs #part of the union #richard hudson #john ford #1973 #bursting at the seams #an outlier from Strawbs' seminal 73 album Bursting at the Seams‚ Union is an unusually uptempo bit of (comparative) froth that is quite #unlike the prog fused folk rock the band were best known for. actually it was never intended as a Strawbs song: writers Hudson and Ford #were exploring a more commercial sound than that favoured by chief Strawbs lyricist Dave Cousins‚ and had recorded a version of the song to #release themselves (as The Brothers). Cousins must have liked it‚ because the song was quickly reworked to incorporate him and squeezed #onto the album (not that it dispelled any working issues between band members; Hudson and Ford left the band acrimoniously a few #months later and formed the imaginatively named Hudson Ford). regardless of the internal power struggle‚ the single became far and #away Strawbs' bestselling song (arguably the band were most successful as an albums band over singles but this was their sole #entry into the UK top 10‚ peaking at 2). it's also had real staying power; actually fairly divisive on first release (embraced by pro union #listeners whilst simultaneously identified as sharp parody by anti union types) it's managed to enter popular culture in a way that #none of the band's more 'serious' music ever managed. Ford and Hudson have gone on the record in later years to confirm that yes #they were being perfectly sincere and celebrating the trade unions‚ but i can't blame some listeners their scepticism (in #particular the line about the narrator's identity card making him feel like a superman‚ which feels a little like a wry dig)#but considering the band's folk roots and the long association between folk and trade unions i suppose it should have been clear #where their sympathies lay. lyrically this is a delight‚ full of simplistic but tight end rhyme and a rousing chorus which helped cement it #in the public consciousness. and happily Ford and Hudson eventually patched it up with Cousins and all played happily together in later #formations of the band. unity indeed.

i genuinely have no animosity towards ppl who get upset abt not being able to read academic texts + i do think we need to expand the pathways/methods of being exposed to critical concepts so that "sit + read for 2 hours" is not the only option.

however, as someone dx with adhd + incapable of sitting still for even a minute (actually right at this moment i am writing this instead of reading the book sitting open in front of me), i do feel like a lot of ppl do not realize that not all readings are designed to be read like a novel.

as in, it's ok + normal + good to need to reread a paragraph several times, to only read part of a book, to have to research or reference words or concepts in order to grasp the reading, to skip over large chunks of text which are not relevant to your expertise, to continue reading despite not understanding a concept. this is something 'neurotypical' academics do frequently + many of these texts, especially contemporary ones, were designed with this in mind.

there are many ppl with accessibility needs that are not being met by academic texts at this time! many texts (in my humble opinion) are unnecessarily complex in order to show off or hide the fact that they have no idea what they're talking about.

i still feel like many of the kneejerk reactions on this site are based on the assumption that their experience reading academic texts should be similar to their experiences reading a nyt bestseller, rather than a process of thinking, analyzing, researching, processing, returning. some of u are telling yourself that any challenges u face while reading are a result of some internal fault u have + not an expected + precious part of the experience.

#like if u hate reading feel free not to #but if u wish u could read theory #but you're convinced it's impossible bcuz it's confusing or difficult or u could never possibly read a whole book?#i encourage u to step away from this idea of reading cover to cover in one run #+ start engaging with theory like a puzzle which u can fiddle with as much or as little as u feel able to
