Relationships are all about connecting to another person, learning to love every single little thing about them. Because people were so unique, with deep personalities, this could take some time to do. Eventually, you may know everything there is to possibly know, which seems shocking. You still remember the plot line between Jim and Pam on The Office, in which Pam insists there must be something she doesn’t know about her husband. But, she does.
It’s difficult to think about for too long because you’ll find yourself becoming infatuated with the idea of learning as much as you can. So, in this relationship of just two months, you were letting things happen as fate allowed them to. You told Calum things here and there, and he reciprocated.
It would be when a morning when you showed up for breakfast that you learned he preferred tea over over coffee. There’d be a boring day at his house where you’d learn that he and Roy had a rotating chore list, shared in their text messages but sometimes written on the white board in the kitchen.
It was on a Thursday night when Calum learned you liked to be in bed on a work night at 9 pm. He’s wrestled with you, wanting to stay longer, but gave up when he realized how tired you truly were. Finally, there was that time at Ashtons, for a barbecue, when Calum learned you were allergic to strawberries after attempting to romantically feed you the chocolate covered piece of fruit.
But, there was still things neither of you knew about each other.
Friday nights were usually when you had the most fun. You’d spend all weekend together, and it kick it off with some late night Taco Bell runs or trips to Luke’s for a double-date, movie night with him and Sierra. Tonight would be spent in, watching movies, most likely going to get some type of fast food way-too late and, for the first time ever, staying the night at Calum’s house. It was going to be a learning curve for many reasons.
In preparation for your night in, you had already removed your makeup and contacts, coffee-house styled glasses framing your clean face. Your hair was in a bun, Calum’s green Empathy hoodie around your torso, and black leggings adorning your thighs. You drove to Calum’s house with the driver’s side window down, but now the sun was set, and you began to roll it up as a chilly gust of wind blew across the valley.
Soon enough, you were stepping out of your car, tugging the strap of your overnight bag over your shoulder, and shuffling towards Calum’s doorstep. You knocked three times before beginning to rock back and forth on your heels. The door pulled open and Roy grinned down at you.
You offered a polite smile as he stepped aside to let you in, “Hey, Roy. How are you?”
“I’m good, [Y/N], thanks. You?” He stood against the now-closed door, watching as you slipped out of your shoes.
Your voice dropped to a murmur with the lightest pink coloring your cheeks, “Nervous.”
Roy laughed, moving back towards the living room with, “Ah, you’ll be fine.”
As soon as he turned the corner, you heard the Duke’s nails tapping against the hallway floor. He came into the parlor, running as quickly as his little legs would allow. You crouched down, the strap of your bag falling down your shoulder. You shrugged it off further and picked Duke up in your arms. He licked your cheek, tail wagging against the crook of your elbow. You stood upright, moving further into the house.
“Hi, baby,” you nuzzled your nose against the soft fur of his neck, grinning at his comfort.
“Wow, Duke, so quick to abandon me just because [Y/N]’s here,” Calum rounded the same corner, dressed down in a Santa Cruz sweatshirt pulled over his blonde hair and pajama bottoms. He looked so cute, your heart almost melted.
You looked up from the dog, a shy smile adorning your features. “He just misses me.”
“Well, he’s not the only one,” Calum wrapped his arms around you, holding you as close to him as he could with Duke between the two of you. You pulled back slightly, bending down to set Duke on the floor. Calum brought you back against his chest, lips grazing your cheek in a sloppy kiss.
You giggled, writhing away from his lips. Calum’s mouth moved towards your nose, eyes shut, but he pushed so harshly because you were pulling away from him that he bashed his face against your glasses. They fell to the ground and you stumbled into Calums chest, laughing so hard your face burned bright red.
Calum was laughing, too, though it was being dialed down by his guilt and worry for the frames he didn’t even know existed. He managed to grab them from the floor, doing a once over to see if they were okay. They were, save a single Duke hair on the glass, so he handed them over.
You calmed down and slipped them over your ears. Calum’s eyes focused on them, admiring the way they fit your face. He, “didn’t know you wore glasses.”
“I do,” you pushed them up your nose, hand dropping to your side. “Do they look bad? I-“
He grabbed your hand as it moved back up at the frames, fingers intertwining with them, “No, they’re, like really cute. Like super adorable on you.”
You blushed again, chewing on your bottom lip, “Really?”
“I just wanna kiss your face, you’re so cute, Jesus,” Calum grabbed your waist with his free hand. You bumped into his chest, finding your footing with your forearm draped over his shoulders.
“Just dont knock them off again.”
-
Later that night, Calum drove the two of you to Taco Bell. It was chilly, but in spite of that, you cradled a slushee in your hand. Calum was holding the other, intertwined in your lap. He pulled off a road that didn’t lead back to his house, and didn’t answer your questions.
He parked the car on a hill overlooking the city. He pushed up the center consol to reveal the middle seat underneath. With a light tug, he had you under his arm, snuggled against his side. You leaned into him graciously, the scent from his hoodie matching that on his neck.
You closed your eyes for a moment, nearly falling asleep when you felt the slushee slipping from your fingers. A flash, also, woke you from your near passed-out state. Your eyes opened to a photo on Calum’s Snapchat of you and him, in the same position. He was grinning, eyes trained on you. They were flushed with pure adoration and you felt your cheeks redden, chest swell.
“Can I post this on Instagram?” He scrolled through his phone, which was still in your eyesight.
You were slightly taken back, thinking that you looked awful in your glasses, face red from the poor car lighting, and chin nearly doubled because you were so snuggled up. You shook your head of the self conscious thoughts, “Oh, sure, I guess.”
“Hey,” Calum set down his phone and turned so he could meet your eyes. “Youre beautiful, okay? I know it might not be something you agree with or feel and I cant force you to believe, but you are beautiful.”
“Cal, I,” you hesitated, “Ive just always been self conscious of my glasses. You can post the photo, Im just scared that the comments are going to reflect my thoughts.”
Calum opened his phone again, tapping on more buttons than needed. He turned off the comments. Added a caption that said, “My personal (and cuter) Harry Potter.”
You glanced back up at him, cupping his cheek with your free hand. You pressed a kiss to his jaw, holding him against you for longer than a moment. He jerked back only to press his lips against yours.
“I want to make you fall in love with yourself while I do.”

The icy glass of the passenger window was cold against your forehead and you felt the soft hum of the car vibrate against your skin. The snow was starting to stick to the concrete outside and you felt the urge to jump out of the car and make snow angels.
Anxiety and nerves continued to swell in the pit of your stomach as Maya drove, bringing you closer and closer to the very last place you wanted to be.
Well, that wasn’t entirely true. You did want to see your friends. You hadn’t seen Ash, Mike or Cal in several months due to the circumstances and you also had isolated yourself from your other friends, Maya being pretty much the only person you talked to consistently. Maya was actually bringing you closer and closer to the very last person you wanted to see.
He’d probably be with his new girlfriend, looking all smug and cocky, and you’d be glued to Maya’s side all night, trying not to make eye contact with him or the thin model he had on his arm.
“We’re here.” Maya pulled you abruptly out of your thoughts and you realized that the car had, in fact, stopped and you would have to get out and face everyone in a minute.
Maya saw the worry in your eyes and gave your arm a squeeze. “Doll, you got this, alright? You look hot and you're gonna go in there and show Luke what he coulda had, okay?”
You sighed and looked up at Maya with glassy eyes. “I don’t know if I can face him, M.”
“Oh sweetie.” She tugged you quickly into a tight hug and scolded softly into your ear. “He’s not worth any more tears. I know you’re ready for this and I’ll be right there with you the entire time.” She pulled away from you, her hands still gripping your shoulders. “Alright?’
You nodded in understanding and blinked away your tears. You pulled down the sun visor to give yourself one last look and took a deep breath. You got this.
The snow crunched softly under your booties as you approached the front door. Bile began to rise in your throat and your palms got all sweaty but you kept your face stoic and calm. He would not get the satisfaction of seeing you flustered.
Maya lifted a ring clad hand and gave a few strong knocks before someone called “coming!”
Excitement swelled in you because you knew who that voice belonged to.
A tall brunette with soft, brown puppy eyes opened the door, beer in hand. “You guys made it!” Calum tugged you in by your shoulders, wrapping you in the biggest bear hug you’d ever experienced. “I missed you, tiny.”
“Cal, I missed you too. So much.” He felt you sniffle and immediately pulled you away from him, concern written on his face.
“Hey! No tears on New Years.” He immediately began to chuckle to himself.
You stared at him, trying to appear unimpressed and hiding the smile fighting it's way onto your face. “You’re laughing because you rhymed, aren’t you.”
He nodded softly and pulled you under his arm, guiding you and Maya through the door.
“Look who’s here!” Cal smiled proudly, presenting you and Maya to the crowd and you blushed a deep shade of red, hiding your face in Calum’s chest.
Mike immediately engulfed your smaller figure into a giant hug and rambled on about how much he missed you and Crystal kept trying to fight for her turn. You wrapped your arms tightly around her and apologized for not being around as much anymore and then you felt even worse when she started crying, but she insisted that it wasn’t a big deal, she just missed you.
Next came Ash and KayKay who each gave you warm and welcoming hugs and you talked to them for a while, catching up on their lives and letting them in a little on yours. They insisted that you and Maya get coffee with them sometime and you agreed, so happy that they didn’t take your leave of absence personally. You didn’t want them to feel caught in the middle or that they had to choose between you and Luke once things had escalated 6 months ago.
You greeted the rest of the party, your eyes finally landing on Luke only to find he was already staring at you. You immediately looked down and then cursed yourself for being so passive.
6 months ago, you confessed your feelings for Luke in Michael’s backyard at a party and nothing had been the same since. You were so sure he felt the same way but as soon as the words came out of your mouth, he clammed up and stopped talking to you. It was some of the worst pain you’d ever felt. Not only the pain of rejection from someone you had romantic feelings for, but also the pain of losing your best friend.
You had gotten a good look at the girl tucked under his arm. She had shorter blonde hair and tanned skin and the build of a Victoria’s Secret model. A stereotypically gorgeous girl -- the type you often compared yourself to. It made you think about all the things she had that you didn’t. Luke picked her over you.
About 2 hours into the night -- it was close to 9 now -- you sat on the couch with Maya watching Ashton act something out in charades.
Luke’s phone starts ringing from across the room. You know it's his because his ringtone is spongebob music. He sits up, pushing the blonde girls legs off of his lap and excusing himself to take the call. He seemed concerned, but you told yourself it wasn’t your job to worry about him anymore.
About 20 minutes had gone by and Luke hadn’t returned which was a little worrisome.
You sat up from the couch and grabbed your glass to go get a refill from the kitchen, attempting to push Luke out of your mind.
“Want anything?” You asked Maya. She shook her head, “I’m good, thanks.”
You padded down the hall, your feet bare, and grabbed the wine bottle left open on the counter. The red liquid slowly funneled out of the glass and you practically jumped out of your skin when you saw Luke standing in the doorway. You had to stop yourself from looking down at his black button up or the patch of exposed pale skin peaking through the unbuttoned top of it.
You were trying to decide whether to scold him for scaring you or ignore him when you noticed how puffy and red his eyes were and how empty he looked.
“Hi…” You said, not really sure how else to approach this situation. He was really worrying you.
Luke ran a hand through his hair and approached the island. With a screech, he pulled one of the stools out and plopped himself down on it. His head immediately fell into his hands and he let out an exasperated groan, shaking his head slowly back and forth.
You stood there, uncomfortable and in shock, without a single clue on what to do with the sad boy in front of you. It didn’t feel right to leave him there after he approached you first so you stood there awkwardly, taking a big swig of the fresh red wine in your glass to fight the anxious ramble you were sure to let out soon if he didn’t say anything.
After a minute of painful silence, Luke picked his head up and looked at you. Because he was so close, you could really see his pink tear stained cheeks and his glassy eyes. You tried to ignore how your heart broke for him -- you were supposed to be over him.
“Just got a call from my mum,” he said. His throat bobbed and he licked his lips.
You gave him a quizzical look, expecting him to continue.
“My uh -- god.” Luke shook his head and gripped his hair tightly. He sucked in a sharp breath. “My brother, Ben, and his wife got in a car accident about an hour ago.”
You gasped, clapping a hand to your mouth. You had met Ben several times since you and Luke had known each other. Always a kind soul and the life of the party. “Oh my god. Is he alright?”
Luke’s bottom lip began to quiver and he pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and middle finger. You could tell it was taking everything in him to hold his composure. “He’s in a coma. They don’t know if or when he’ll come out of it.”
Without a second thought, you practically ran around the island to Luke and pulled him tightly into a hug. He melted into you, both his arms folding over your shoulders and his face tucking into the crook of your neck. Immediately, your shirt began to dampen with the tears he stopped trying to hold back and you ran your hands up and down his back soothingly. “I’m so, so sorry, Lu.” There was nothing you could say to make his hurt go away, all you could do was be there.
He tried to keep his sobs quiet so the others wouldn’t come looking, but even his soft cries were the most tortured sounds you’d ever heard. Hearing his pain brought tears to your eyes.
“Lu, god, Lu, I’m so sorry,” you repeated, holding his head and placing a kiss on his shoulder.
After a few minutes, his sobs ceased and he began to pull back from you, sniffling. You handed him a tissue and he gladly accepted, giving you the most genuine smile he could muster in the moment.
“I’m sorry for unloading that on you.” He kicked his feet under the counter distractedly.
You shook your head. “You don’t need to apologize.”
Luke laughed bitterly. “Yeah, yeah I do. What I did to you… I regret it every single day.”
You shifted your feet uncomfortably. “We don’t have to talk about that.”
“Yes, yes we do. Because… because I lost my best friend.” You looked down at your fingers and fiddled with your rings anxiously. “Now might not be the most ideal time to say this, but I feel like I have to. Not only did I lose my best friend… but I’ve always loved you too. My feelings for you are so strong that my first instinct was to run. I was afraid of losing myself in you. Or the kind of heartbreak I’d experience if I ever lost you. But not trying is so much worse and I know that now.” Luke bit his lip. “I love you. And I don’t think I even fully realized it until 20 minutes ago when I got the worst news I’ve probably ever received in my life... and the first thing I wanted to do was run to you.”

turn it on in a new kind of bright (it's solar)
in the words of myself to meghna when i sent her the link to the doc for this at like 2.30am this morning: luke opened his mouth again so i opened a google doc
soft sunshine boy the came to mind after listening to startling line for like two hours straight. reminds me of another soft boy i wrote in like february which you can find here
very special tune and i’m very grateful that we all got to experience its release together in this space <3
and if ao3 is more your jam you can find what’s below here
The light breeze blowing through the late afternoon air carries the scent of honeysuckle and the sun shining down on Los Angeles is warm but not hot and Luke is smiling.
He’s sitting in the grass, the blades tickling his fingers, and his face is tilted up to greet the sun as it starts in the direction of its daily descent. His grown out curls dance in the wind and he can feel just a touch of soreness in his neck and nose that tells him he’ll wake up tomorrow more blushed than normal. But sacrifices must be made for beautiful summer days sometimes.
Behind him he can hear laughter and splashing in the pool and the sizzling of a grill. They’d made a habit of days like these as summer returned to the city and the world started to feel like it was turning once again. He hears the barking of a few canine friends that tells him Michael and Crystal have likely arrived. He’ll get up to greet them in a moment. Right now he’s having a moment to thank the sun.
It’s been the longest and shortest year of his life. It scares him, how close he is to 25 when he feels like he’s been 24 for twenty minutes and twenty years. Both Ashton and his mom try to assure him that 25 will bring enough adventure to fill far more than the year he feels as though he’s missed but he’s not sure that that’s the point. He hardly remembers being 23 now. That scares him a little, too.
But he knows it does him no good to dwell on the fear of things he can’t control so he’s trying to be better about looking forward. Though it feels important to him to be thankful for what’s carried him through it all. The boys, his family, Petunia. The fruit tree he’s been taking care of in his backyard, the smell of his home studio, the feeling of Ashton’s arms around him. And the sun.
Even on the days that feel darkest, there are beams of light shining into his living room and warmth provided by a star so so far away from the spot he sits in currently in Calum’s backyard. When he felt like he was stuck on pause with no way to move forward or back, the sun would still rise and fall every single day. Each morning and evening brought gorgeously painted skies that no artist could ever dream of replicating exactly, no camera able to draw in all the light just right. Luke is no astronomer so the science of the beauty the sun creates is lost on him. Though he thinks he’s alright with considering it somewhat magical instead.
Sometimes he considers shouting his thanks up into the sky. He wonders if he yells loud enough if maybe the sun might hear him. He knows it’s a silly thought but he can’t help but want to show his appreciation somehow. He thinks about the early mornings he would spend on the porch with a mug of coffee, watching the sky turn from purples to reds and oranges to a bright, brilliant blue before he’s even made it to the bottom of his mug. He thinks about the rays of light shining through storm clouds after a spring rain to shine a rainbow across the sky. He lets out a sigh as he thinks about evenings out on walks with Ashton when they would circle the block a half a dozen times until they were covered in twilight and the lateness of the day.
Luke recalls the last year, the last several months especially, and he’s thankful for all of the beautiful things he’ll be able to look back on as he heads forward in life. The drives down the highway with Petunia sitting shotgun, the Polaroid pictures Ashton’s covered his fridge with of the boys together in the studio, the flowers in the window in his kitchen he grew from tiny seeds his mother sent in a care package. It’s the little, tiny things that make up the whole of a person, of a life. Reflecting on it, Luke almost feels like that should be obvious. But it wasn’t until his life slowed to a stop that he was really able to see it. He wonders if he’s allowed to be thankful for that. He hopes he is.
A wet nose brushes against his hand and he turns from his friend in the sky millions of miles away to greet the creature behind him. Duke stares up at him with his typical look of confusion before padding around to sit in Luke’s lap. A bright laugh escapes his lips as he sits up to run a hand through the small dog’s fur.
A few minutes later a dragonfly darts over the grass and it’s enough to have Duke leaping from Luke’s legs in the direction of its path, his shrill barks calling out to warn the party of the intruder. Luke is watching him run around the far side of the pool and doesn’t notice the footsteps crunching through the grass until they’re just behind him.
He turns and squints up to face whoever has come to join him. He smiles up at Ashton and reaches a hand out. “Join me?”
“I was sent to fetch you to come join everyone else, technically,” Ashton laughs but he accepts Luke’s hand and takes the spot beside him. Orange hues are just starting to paint their way across the sky and Luke takes a deep breath as Ashton’s head drops to rest on his shoulder. He threads their fingers together and lets them rest in his lap while his thumb traces circles against the back of Ashton’s hand.
“Were you talking to your best friend up in the sky?” Ashton questions. Luke’s told him about his silent (and sometimes not so silent) conversations with the sun. Ashton compared it to meditation or praying the first time he mentioned it but Luke figures it’s something between the two.
“Yeah, we were just having a quick chat about how nice it is that everyone was free tonight.”
“It’s very nice, yes,” Ashton says with a sigh as he turns to press a kiss against Luke’s neck. “I was telling Calum we should make it more regular. Like weekly family dinner?”
“I think that’s a great idea,” Luke says and a smile pulls across his cheeks. He notes the soreness there as well and tries to remember if they have any aloe back at the house.
Ashton sits up then and turns to face Luke, his free hand lifting to poke against the bridge of Luke’s nose. He laughs as he replaces his fingertip with his lips. “You’re going to be all pink tomorrow.”
Luke shrugs. “It suits me.”
“It really does,” Ashton agrees as he pushes himself up to stand. He reaches for Luke’s other hand to help him do the same. “Let’s go help Michael set the table.”
Luke hums as he lets Ashton guide them in the direction of the house. Before they hit the patio, he takes one last moment to focus on the feeling of the soft grass below his feet and the honeysuckle perfume in the air and the pinks being added to the palette being brushed across their LA evening. Between the world all around him and the people he’s with tonight, he can’t help but think he’s probably the luckiest man alive.
It’s nice, Luke thinks, that as everything goes back to something like the way it was that he won’t lose this. These beautiful sunsets were there before, during, and will be there everyday after. As he turns to head into the house, Ashton’s fingers lazily tangled with his own, he’s glad that he’s learned to start seeing it for the magic that it is.

Could you write something about Ashton and the reader having a fight because they’ve been dating for years and she wants to get married but he doesn’t want to make that commitment, so she leave to stay with Luke and Sierra and her and Sierra realises the reader is pregnant and she goes and tells ash after he comes over to apologise, and the end it all fluffy and he wants to marry her?? Sort if it’s long 😂 thank you xxxxx
This wasn’t long at all!! I hope you like it!!! 😊😊😊😊😊
           You sit on the couch next to Sierra. Her head is resting on your shoulder, and your legs are pulled up so your thighs are pressed against your torso. Some movie you’d never seen before was playing on the TV, but Sierra swore it was going to cheer you up. So far, it hadn’t and all you could think about was the previous few days. It’s been three days since you ran out of the place you called home and came here. Never in your life did you think that a fight with Ashton would blow up the way that one did, but it blew up, and it was a fight that you would never forget.
           It started when Ashton told you that one of his best friends proposed to his girlfriend, something you’ve been hinting at him to do for at least six months. It’s been almost five years since the two of you started dating, and you couldn’t seem to figure out what as so wrong with the idea of just getting married. After telling you the news, he looked down at his phone and you rolled your eyes, “Maybe we’ll be the next ones to announce our engagement.” You were tired of encrypting your hints, this time it was blunt.
           Ashton’s head popped up and his eyes grew wide, “I doubt that.” He said laughing nervously.
           You dropped your hands and pulled your eyebrows together in anger, “Why do you doubt that? Do you not want to marry me?”
           He tried to back pedal, but the words had already been spoken. “That’s not what I’m saying, I just don’t think we’re ready to get married yet.” His voice softened while he tried to make you feel better, but it absolutely failed.
           Your blood started to boil, “What do you mean you don’t think we’re ready yet? We’ve been together for five years. Tell me the truth Ashton, is it me? Is it that you don’t want to marry me?” At this point the tears had started to fall, but they were angry tears, and angry tears always seem to burn more.
           Ashton’s eyebrows stitched together, “What? Are you insane? Why would you think I don’t want to marry you?” He dropped his hands to his side, his voice raising a bit louder.
           “Because you’d ask me to marry you already if it wasn’t that you didn’t want to marry me!” You blurted out, the words burning your throat as they escaped.
           Ashton took a step forward, your anger transferring to him and his eyes turned dark, “Maybe it’s because I’m not ready for that kind of commitment, okay?” Immediately, Ashton blinked, his eyes returning to their normal hazel. Immediately, you thought you could tell he regretted the words, but within another split second, his eyes were dark again. He meant what he said. Your breath hitched in your throat as you spun around and ran to the bedroom to collect some clothes before running out of the house to Luke and Sierra’s.
           Sierra comforted you as much as she could, but your heart was absolutely broken. How can he string someone along for five years and then say he wasn’t ready for that kind of commitment? No matter how hard you tried not to think about him, he was the only thought in your head.
           Just as Sierra wrapped her arms around you, continuing to keep her focus on the movie she had put on, a wave of nausea washed over you. For a minute you were able to keep the bile at bay, but then the headache quickly followed. The headache making it virtually impossible to keep the contents of your stomach in your stomach. Quickly, you pushed Sierra away from you and ran to the nearest bathroom, barely making it to the porcelain throne in time.
           Within a few seconds, Sierra busted through the door, scrambling through her words to ask you if you were alright. “I’m okay, I think it was just something I ate.” You said as you turned the faucet on to wash out your mouth. Sierra nodded and closed the bathroom door to give you a bit of privacy. As soon as the door clicked shut, you placed your hands on the edge of the sink and leaned back, a feeling deep in the pit of your stomach telling you that it was not something you ate. If it had been something you ate, Luke and Sierra would be sick. They’ve eaten the same thing as you for the past three days.
           A terrifying thought crossed through your mind and you shook your hands out trying to push that thought out of your mind. You shook every part of your body and let out a breath before opening the door and heading back to the couch. The entire night, the thought kept crossing your mind, and once Luke left, you figured it was time to talk to Sierra about it. “Can I ask you something?” You asked her, lifting your head away from her shoulder.
           “You can ask me anything,” She replied with a bright smile.
           It took a minute for you to build up the courage to admit your thoughts to her, but finally you let the words come out like a waterfall, “I’m afraid that when I threw up earlier, that it was a sign that I’m pregnant.”
           Sierra pursed her lips and nodded, “Are you sure?” She turned to you and raised an eyebrow.
           You shook your head and shrugged, “It was just a thought. Ashton and I weren’t trying, but we weren’t preventing either. Do you think I should try a test just in case?”
           Sierra nodded and shrugged at the same time, “Maybe you should, because it’ll put your mind at ease no matter what the result is.” Silence fell between you and her for a moment before you nodded and asked her to drive you to the store.
           While at the store you bought four different tests, all from different brands. You figured it was the best way of preventing a false positive. Sierra waited patiently with you as you took test after test. After taking each test, you set it on the edge of the sink and waited, not looking at a single one of them until all time was up. Once the timer on Sierra’s phone went off, the two of you walked back into the bathroom and looked at each test. All four said positive.
           Your breath hitched as you closed your eyes and tried to run through any rational thought in your mind. Sierra was rambling next to you, in an effort to keep you calm. Your heart was racing, and the noise was so loud that Sierra’s voice was muffled. Everything snapped back to normal when the front door shut and Luke announced he was home and brought a visitor.
           Together, you and Sierra walked into the front room and found Luke standing there with Ashton next to him. Ashton’s hands were in his pocket and his head hung in a sheepish way. Your skin crawled and your blood boiled, what was he doing here after everything he said to you. In a split second, Luke escorted Sierra out of the room, leaving you and Ashton alone. “I’m sorry for everything I said the other night. I’m just scared; I’m scared that if I ask you to marry me that you’ll still end up leaving me. You deserve so much better than me, and I thank my luck stars every day that you still stick with me.”
           Instead of responding, you just nodded. Maybe you did deserve someone better than him, but he was all you’ve ever wanted, and all you’ve ever wanted for the rest of your life. The thought of telling him about the positive tests in the bathroom around the corner crossed your mind, but you decided to keep that to yourself. “After you left the other night, I did a lot of thinking, and I want you to know that I’ve had this for a while, I was just waiting until I wasn’t an idiot. Well, turns out I’m always going to be an idiot, so I might as well just do it.” Your eyebrows stitched together as he pulled out a black velvet box from his pocket. He clutched it between his fingers and dropped to one knee. Your heart pounded in your chest, but you weren’t sure if it was in a good way. He opened the box to reveal a simple diamond ring, “Will you please marry me?”
           You looked from the ring back to his face, “Are you doing this just because we got in the fight? I don’t want you to marry me out of pity.”
           Ashton pulled his eyebrows together, “Wh-No, I’ve had this ring for about a year now. I’ve always wanted to marry you; I was just scared. I’m not scared anymore, I want to marry you, I want to live the rest of my life with you, I want to have babies with you,” That one caused the lump in your throat to grow bigger.
           For a while you contemplated your answer, you wanted to make sure he was being genuine. You inspected his eyes, they were brighter than normal, the hazel having a bit more green than usual. There was a sparkle that caught the light every so often, and the tears welled at the bottom of his eyes the longer you took to answer. After letting out a breath and swallowed the lump in your throat you nodded, allowing yourself to smile and move closer to him. He smiled, finally letting a tear flow down his cheek. His lips pressed against yours before he delicately placed the ring on your finger.
           The moment slowed and you realized you had to tell him. The smiled on your face faded as you looked up at him. He could tell there was something wrong, and without any words being spoken, you grabbed his hand and pulled him to the bathroom that held the positive pregnancy tests. Ashton stepped in and looked at the tests resting on the sink. His eyebrows stitched together as he looked at you, silently asking if they were yours. You nodded and Ashton immediately started laughing, tears falling down his face quicker than when you said yes to his proposal.
           Within a second, he scooped you into his arms and pressed his lips to yours. “I’m going to be a dad,” was the only thing he was able to get out before pressing his lips against yours again. With his lips against yours, you knew that he was the man you wanted to spend the rest of your life with.

-
Since the surprise announcement you made with Calum earlier, the paparazzi went crazy (again). They always came whenever you went out somewhere, they followed you everywhere you go, especially you didn’t own any vehicles and you always counted on online taxi.
Suddenly, your life is being a highlight of the year again. Like, the ex of famous male singer has moved on and dating her fellow bestfriend. It suck to be famous and everyone’s eyes are all over you.
They keep asking the same question over and over; are you still in touch with Justin? Did Justin knew you’re dating? How’s Justin’s reaction? Are they dumb? You hadn’t contacted him since the break up and they knew exactly You avoided him, you avoided every questions related to him. You didn’t even care about him anymore.
And yet they really had a nerve to asked that just only for a headline.
As you were predict before, few paps been outside the studio building you were came to. You went inside with an extra effort because they really blocking your way in.
As usual petty questions came out from their mouths while took pictures of me and Calum. But we really ignored it like what’s the point if i or Calum answered their questions? It would caused a world war three. Lol.
After we got inside the building, we walked to the studio room and we meet our fellow friends Ashton, Luke, Michael. And you realized there were your other songwriting friends like Andrew Watt, Ryan Tedder, Louis Bell, Ali Tamposi, and Charlie Puth.
“Hey Palvin,” Charlie looking you confused when he saw you and Calum holding hands. “Oh i forgot. Congrats for you both.” He got up and you hugged him.
“Thanks.” You said to Charlie. “So…,” you said it while looked at them one by one as a sign for them to explain to you their project.
Then Ryan Tedder explained to you. “Oh, we wrote lyrics and Charlie and Andrew are making the beat and i called Luke immediately because i felt this song is really suits them.”
You nodded and Charlie showed you the demo that finished days ago.
“So what do you think?” Andrew asked you after the song played. “It’s pretty sick to be honest.”
You nodded at his comment. “Yes, i love it so much. It’s very thrilling and i can’t wait for the final release.” You were very excited because the moment Charlie played the demo, you really fall in love to the beat and also Luke’s voice really matched the whole song.
After hours staying on the studio, mostly joking around with friends, then we shared our thoughts about music industry, producing, lyrics and all related to music, you and Calum decided to went home.
As you walked out of the building, paps swarmed you and Calum.
“Hey Saara, what’s the thing you did at the studio?”
“How was your day, Calum?”
“You two looks good together.”
“Any new project for 5sos?”
You looked at Calum, his face was straight and ignored all of the questions. And we kept walking to the parking lot.
“Is your relationship and Justin good?”
“Any comment about Justin’s marriage?”
“Are you jealous of her past relationship with Justin Bieber?”
The moment you heard the last question, you stopped walking and Calum immediately stopped too because he was confused why you stopped.
“Can you please, for once in your lifetime, be respectful to my boyfriend? He’s literally stood beside me and all you care was asking me irrelevant questions? Please. I don’t care if you all raining me with ex questions, but when I’m with him, you better be asked about us or shut your damn mouth.” You walked faster than before so you and Calum could arrived to the car and get away from them.
After we arrived at the car, we left the parking lot back to your apartment.
“Wow, what was that about? You’ve been such a badass.” He started the conversation.
You chuckled. “Those people need to be shut. I’m honestly tired with all those questions.”
“So what do you think about our new upcoming single?” He asked you as a distraction of this situation.
“I love it already. It’s so amazing, Luke’s voice is so matched to the lyric, and the bass line, i can imagine you performing with that cool bass line.” You gave him a positive comment because you knew that song would be a hit even you only heard the demo.
-
“Hi sister,” Mali greeted you when you answered her facetime call.
After Calum drove you off to your apartment, you immediately opened your laptop and get ready to have a virtual ‘meeting’ with Mali because today is the schedule for you and her to discuss her new upcoming single. She asked you for a help and you felt so honored to be a part of her project.
You waved to her through the web camere. “Hi Mali, how you doing?” You were so excited to talk to her even though you texted her everyday.
“I’m fine, what about you?” She asked you back while she sipped her drink.
“I’m good. Wait, why your room is so dark? Oh my God I’m so sorry I forgot, timezone.” You giggled. “So it’s midnight there? OMG Mali, I’m so sorry, we supposed to FaceTime at your local time, not mine.”
Then she laughed. “Don’t say sorry, sister. I’m the one who needs your help. Don’t worry, i took my coffee since hours ago.” She raised her glass. “How’s you and Calum? Everything’s good?”
You smile and nodded. “Yes. We’re good.” “Thank you… for always supporting me.”
“I’ve always liked you since the first time we met back in 2014. You were so kind, friendly, smart and i knew that you’re a good person. I knew that you’re the right person for my brother and i will always support you till the end of time. Past is just a past and we have to left it behind and move on to the future.” Her short speech almost made you cry. Because she’s a very lovely person and you love her so much.
“Virtual hug for you, sister.” That’s the first time of you to called her ‘sister’. Not because you didn’t want to, but you were shy and also scared to called her that because ‘the past’ and also scared she would rejected you. “So i had this lyric i made and i kept it for myself and i wanna show it to you.”
You opened the notebook. “So the lyric is kinda saying sorry for everything that happened and the person is kinda missed all the memories and she felt sad. Sorry I’m suck at explaining.” You grinned and you took your guitar beside you.
“Please show me.” Said Mali.
You started to strum the guitar. “I miss laying in the park, i miss the walks out after dark
You were my first and you'll be the last
I miss the rhythm of your heart, i miss your head laid on my chest
You always said that I was the best, no one ever spoke to me like you did
And I miss you, Cal, and it's hard to take and I can't be saved
I'm sorry
That I didn't give it all to you, I'm sorry
Don't look away 'cause I gotta say I'm sorry
Just hold me 'cause the words will fade, I'm sorry
That I didn't give it all to you.” You finished the first verse and chorus and Mali gave you an applause.
“Saara, that was beautiful.” She looked so stunned. “That was meaningful.”
Yes, that lyric was meaningful to you because you wrote it years ago back in 2015 when you were ‘separate’ from Calum and you felt so guilty about it. You didn’t even had a chance to say sorry to him and instead you wrote this songs as a reminder for you that he was your first special man that came into your life. You were so blinded by your obsession and couldn’t see that the man who always there for you was Calum and you were so glad that you’ve finally opened your eyes.
Then you smiles to her. “I will email you the rest of the lyric and let me know what you think.”

a/n: i’ve had this storyline sitting in the works for days soooooo.... its gonna be a couple of parts so lets see where this takes us ya? full of dialogue and unnecessary descriptions.
Tumblr media
summary: after a nasty breakup, Karla Rivera finds herself working as one of the new producers/songwriter for 5SOS. She had no intention to fall in love right now, but one conversation struck a chord with her. In between producing a smashing album and writing hit singles, Karla finds herself entangled in the arms of a man who she never thought she’d end up with.
“Alright boys, as much as I love working with you guys, I think it’s time I bring in someone new.” Andrew says as he shuffles around the kitchen of the Malibu beach house. The boys had rented this place out for a month to work on their new album, as well as to take a short break from tour. They had only arrived yesterday, but things were already starting to bloom and they had a few songs on their hand they thought would fit the album.
“What do you mean? Are you leaving us?” Luke sat up in his seat. All the boys were sprawled in different corners of the kitchen, munching on their breakfast before the day of writing began.
“I’m not leaving, just bringing someone new in.”
“Who? And why do we need someone new?” Andrew could only roll his eyes at the question, downing the last bit of his coffee before throwing it into the sink.
“You’ll know her when she gets here. She’s talented, and I think she could provide something fresh.” He looks at the time on his phone, “She should be here soon, just play nice”
The boys all gave each other looks. They haven’t really stepped out of their circle of people when it came to music, so working with someone new and not to mention a female songwriter, could really give them a whole new perspective on things.
Karla finds herself sitting in the car for way too long. She was parked outside a gorgeous beach house on the quiet side of Malibu and she was dressed in an old concert T-shirt she had stolen from her brother, along with a pair of shorts and sneakers. She takes three deep breaths and gives herself a small pep talk before climbing out of her car. This is your job she reminds herself, it’s something you love to do.
When Karla first received the phone call from Andrew, she was reluctant to move even an inch off the bed in the guest bedroom of her brother’s apartment. All she wanted to do was shove down another pint of ice cream and watch old re-runs of Real Housewives. She knew her brother was the culprit behind the phone call, filling Andrew in about her breakup with her boyfriend of three years. Andrew had blown up her phone afterwards, calling Karla every single day until she finally agreed to come write with him for a week. Though it was a good intention, trying to get Karla out of the house, Andrew knew it was also her prime time. The overwhelming emotions she felt more often than not would be translated into the most beautiful words, and she would produce sounds unheard of. So here she was, standing in front of the door of the house. She had her water bottle and duffel in hand, notebook, phone and iPad in the other. The white door swings open, and Andrew pulled her into his arms immediately,
“There you are!” She returns the hug, a genuine smile on her face after finally him in the flesh. Andrews pulls away, hands clasped to her upper arm and he takes a good look at her. Karla thanks god for the Benefit concealer she’s slathered under her eyes or she’d be getting an earful from him. He grins at her and pulls her into the house, down the hallway to the living room where she spots the four boys with their heads buried in some form of instrument or notebook. They don’t take notice of their presence at first until Andrew clears his throat, and the boys look up at him.
“Boys, this is Karla Rivera, she’ll be working with us for the week!” Andrew says a little too enthusiastically. Karla gives them a small wave, and she notices the look that the boys give each other. They were unsure of her that was for sure, having not met her before. Ashton stood up first, Karla reaching her hand out but the boy pulled her into a single arm hug. She laughed when she was caught off guard by him, which set the boys smiling as well. Calum, Michael and Luke followed after, and they were settled down at the couch so they could show her what they had been working on.
-
“This is good… maybe we can add a bum bum bum.” She hummed a tune the boys had never heard before, and Andrew scrambled to play it on his guitar.
“And then for the lyrics maybe we could do - killin’ me slow with the words you wrote, the heart you broke…” Karla paused to scribble words onto her notebook before singing out, “calling my name, I don’t wanna stay but I’m wide awake, I’m wide awake.” Everyone in the room was in shock at how naturally the words flowed for her, this being the second song that was almost done and definitely had potential in being on the album. There was a lot of humming and words being muttered under their breath, until Calum shot up from his chair.
“How about - just one more taste of you my love. Then we repeat the first two lines? This could be the chorus!” Luke was already by the piano, playing out the melody and singing to the lyrics they had just written down.
“Thin white lies”
“What was that, K?”
“Add the line of thin white lies after that line that Calum just said, have someone sing it in the background or something.” Andrew looked to the boys who followed suit, their eyes widening when they heard themselves perform it. Karla had a wide grin on her face when she heard it unfold, her eyes meeting Calum’s who looked equally as satisfied. They still had a long way to go with empty verses that needed to be filled, but this was a small victory worth celebrating.
“Holy shit.” Ashton mumbled after hearing the small part.
“I told you she was good.”
“Didn’t tell me she was that good.” Andrew smirked at him before working to compile all the components of the chorus together. After the chorus came together, everything else in the song fell into place easily. All four boys worked on the lyrics with Karla, who made the words fall out of their mouths. They had almost the entire song written from top to bottom, the melodies and layering all in place, and they were just missing a bridge and outro.
“We could just stray away from the conventional structure” Michael suggested, but Ashton shook his head.
“No, it feels like something is missing.”
“How about…” Karla had her head in her notebook, flipping through the worn out pages of it. She often dug through the words she had written before but never used, and they would often be essential in a situation like this. Her finger ran across the page that was filled with her scrawly handwriting just a week after her breakup, and that’s when she found the exact words.
“I don't think I like me anymore. Can someone tell me who I was before? We can repeat this twice, I think it fits.” Calum writes it down on the paper that they had the lyrics on, and Luke proceeds to sing it out. Those words definitely fit. They all cheer, high-fives thrown among each other. Karla smiles softly, celebrating with the boys. They take a fifteen minute break for Andrew to record everything down, and Karla took this chance to step outside on the balcony. This was her favourite kind of view - watching the sea crash into the sand, the sun shining above the horizon and a few people laying on the beach having a good time. She thinks about all the time she’s spent at the beach in her three year relationship. How they’d spend every important date in their lives celebrating in the salty water, getting sand so far up their ass they’d shit sandcastles for days. She laughs to herself then shakes her head out of those thoughts. It’s been a whole month since that faithful day, she’s got to get over it. Just as she was about to go back inside, Calum startles her with his voice and she jumps.
“Jeezus, you couldn’t be any stealthier huh.” He chuckles, and Karla notices how his eyes crinkle.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.” She gives him her middle finger, and he stands next to her, admiring the view as well.
“What you did in there, those words were really cool y’know?”
“Thank you.” She says shyly. It’s been nearly five years since she started working as a songwriter, and she still couldn’t handle compliments well.
“Those words came from somewhere?” Karla knew where this conversation was going, but she wasn’t ready for it yet. She nods to Calum, then shrugs her shoulders. He understands and doesn’t push the boundaries.
-
They worked on a couple more songs before they called it a day. The boys had all agreed that Karla brought something different to the table, and pushed them to a whole new level they never knew existed. The lyrics were definitely more vulnerable and honest, and they were enjoying every single moment of it. Food and beer was strewn all over the table, the boys chatting about the next leg of the tour and what not. Karla was the first to notice that Calum wasn’t in the room with them, and she looks around only to find him on the balcony, a cigarette in his hand.
“You know, one too many of those and you could die.” It was his turn to jump, and Karla smiles at him when he dramatically raises his hand to his chest.
“I’d die of a cardiac arrest first.” She playfully shoves him, then moves to take her place on the outdoor sofa. Calum joins her and the pair stay quiet for awhile, just watching as the waves crashed harder on the sand.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Karla hums in response, her eyes closed as a cool breeze passes by. Calum places his hand on her knee, squeezing it slightly to get her attention. Her eyes flutter open and she looks at him, brown eyes and all, just staring at her.
“It just reminds me of my ex.” She sighs, leaning her head back on the chair.
“What does? The ocean?”
“That, and everything else. It’s like I wake up and all I can think about is how awful I feel without him by my side.” His heart scrunches up at her words. He’s finding the right response to her statement, racking his brain for the exact words. But is there a correct response to such a statement? Her voice gets him out of his head, and he’s listening intently again.
“He cheated y’know? I wasn’t in town and he fucking cheated. Had sex with a girl on our bed.”
“A fucker.” Calum seethes. He hears her chuckle and it confuses him for a moment before she speaks up, “that’s an understatement.” Karla leans on his shoulder, a soft sigh escaping her lips. She felt a sense of relief admitting this to someone other than her brother or her best friend. And it felt good to finally get her emotions out on to paper and into a song.
Calum felt his heart race at a dangerous speed when her head came into contact with his shoulders. It was unlike any other feelings that he’s had before. He finds himself being curious, wanting to get to know more of her, and so desperately wanting to feel her touch against his skin. They sit like this for a long time, the sound of the waves and soft music in the background. He leans his head onto hers, humming a soft tune every now and then.

[Prologue], [Chapter 1], [Chapter 2]
I know you want me Every day, not only when you're lonely‚ yeah You see me think you know me But you don't even know nothing about me‚ yeah
The guys went to every floor of the club to check the vibes of the different types of music. Tecno was the least favorite so they came back with the girls that were in the platform with Gigi and their other friends. VIP view just for them because Gigi doesn't allow too many people up there.
Michael amazed of Gigi's work and took the opportunity to chat with her about it and she promised him to take control of the music later. She gave the welcome to everyone to start the night. The boys decided to stay a little longer there while the girls and their friend Dominique  followed them to join the dance floor once Work by Rihanna started playing.
"Cool that you have alcohol up here too, Gigi" Luke said taking a beer from the ice bucket there was.
The girls have no shame when it comes to dance and having fun. The word 'boring' is not in their vocabulary so it's not a surprise founding them giving everything on the dance floor. It was their first song and they were dancing with so much confidence and shameless but here in this side of the planet is what is running in everyone's blood. Passion. Passion for everything that sometimes it could be a double-edged sword.
After a whole song dancing dancehall steps, they went for another round of tequila. Every time Rosie has a tequila shot it reminds her of the night before of her last high school day. They drank too much till 4 am that the next all of her friends went with sunglasses, a blue gatorade bottle and a pill for the hangover.
Calum was resting on the metal barrier, hands on the beer bottle's neck while watching the girls dancing. He laughed when Cami accidentally hit a stranger's head dancing. He looked down to the floor trying to hide his smile. Alcohol starting to do its thing on everyone.
"They have always been like this, sorry mate but if you choose them to be your friends you have to get used to" Kevin said next to Calum who didn't hide his joy very well.
"They are hilarious" Calum said now when Dominique was doing some robot moves. "I'm sure that in one hour they are going to go off energy".
"I know them since second grade, trust me". Kevin started a conversation with Calum. At some point Ashton disappeared, Luke went downstairs to sit in the bar and Michael was searching on Gigi's computer the songs for their shared set. After Kevin ended his beer, he went downstairs to join his friends.
The variety of music Gigi and Michael were playing was interesting. It wasn't a battle, but both of them just playing hit after hit. It was fun that twist of suddenly playing J Balvin with 'Otra Vez' to Drake with 'Passionfruit' or Bad Bunny with 'Chambea' to Travis Scott 'goosebumps'. Spanish or english, the group knew every single word and left their bodies dancing.
Calum felt so inspired with the panoramic view he has from the platform. He was partying next to the Djs, and didn't have the courage yet to join the rest but his view was better. He enjoyed and took mental notes at how in this place people's souls were left in the dance floor. The beauty of sweaty bodies and laughs between the crowd. The energy he and everyone could catch from this environment was mind blowing. Not all the people in the room knew each other, that's for sure but they looked like and it was a powerful moment to catch. Calum went downstairs to join the group for a while to drink and feel what he was thinking to lose himself in the dance floor.
You see my thick thighs Lost it when you look into my brown eyes See‚ my little waist can make you switch sides You never know the devil in the disguise So why don't you stand up, baby
And of course his friends. Luke still on the bar. Michael like the happiest kid in the world as Gigi's guest. Ashton was with the girls now, Calum lost the count about the amount of shots but he was sure that more than five tequila shots were in their bodies. He focused on Rosie, how she was dancing to 'Love Galore' by Sza and how shameless she acted in front of her friend's camera. Cami was filming for Snapchat and Instagram, making sure her followers know that they were having a good night.
You know that kind of snaps or stories. Everyone tipsy or drunk. Showing tongues or the middle finger or blowing a kiss or a dance move or even showing more skin. It was pretty basic but Calum held his breath when later he saw Cami's stories showing Rosie modeling for her friend by taking off her denim jacket and show her outfit and her legs, then a turn to see her back and her clothed butt sparkling thanks to her dress details.
Gigi took a break and left Michael in charge of the music for a while. She joined her friends to have a good time too. Ashton was the only one of the boys dancing and snapping videos.
When Michael put Sorry by Beyoncé, Cami was already with more drink on her system. Rosie tried to tell her to slow down but her friend’s broken heart didn’t listen.
“Cheers to every single boy who has broken our hearts” Gigi said raising her drink.
“And to every single girl too” Kevin protested and Ashton, Dominique and Calum agreed with him.
Two songs later, Gigi and Dominique went to the bathroom and Ashton with Kevin and Cami were begging for some fresh air so they went to the second floor. Rosie told them that she was going to stay there. She felt at home and her friends were going to be back soon so nothing to worry.
Michael decided to play songs from Gigi folder called ‘Chile hits’ and choose one that the name sounded cool for him. ‘Damelo’ by Ceaese and DrefQuila started playing. Rosie as she was alone in the dance floor, she started to melt into the crowd dancing and feeling herself relieving all the tension and feelings for this song.
Be honest (Be honest) You want this (You want it) But I can be heartless Regardless of my conscience
Her glistening figure among the people could be noticed by Calum watching her from the bar. She didn’t notice his stare. Calum watched himself getting closer to join her, suddenly surprised of his choice, ‘it would be rude from me leaving her alone’ he tried to convince himself instead of the truth, he wanted to dance with her.
As he got closer, the view of her became ten times amazing. How her tattoos - the ones that are visible- looked in her arm and her legs. How her glistening face because of her makeup and chest because of sweat matched so good with the blue lights against her skin. The lights looked amazing on everyone, on Calum too and his similar shirt color.
The intermittent pace of the lights made if everyone were dancing in slow motion. Calum reached Rosie and still she was lost in the song waving her arms above her head and moving her hair, her back facing Calum. To not scare her, he decided to step slowly behind her. She recognized him from his strong perfume so she let him put his body against her without turning around. The height difference made Calum to lean down his head so his breathing was hitting Rosie’s ear, so his mouth was close her ear too.
He put his left hand on her waist when he started following her body’s rhythm at the beat of the song. She raised her right arm to put her hand on Calum’s neck. Rosie feels no shame when it comes to dance, it’s when is the real her. Calum couldn’t resist himself to look down to check her, he didn’t know what he was doing but he was having a good time. He didn’t mind about his dance moves, it looks like he was doing a good job right there.
Rosie turned around to face him when Michael changed now to the folder ‘dancehall’. ‘Kiss’ by Zilla was playing -Gigi is a huge fan of dancehall culture, so she is always the one with dancehall hits from artists that are not that famous-. It was funny how Michael was messy mixing and changing the genres of the songs.
She led them into dancehall moves, slow ones like the song. No word were needed between them, he followed her body and now both of his hands on her waist, and her arms around his neck. They were so close that their faces were touching, her forehead close to his mouth. Coming to an end of the song, she looked up and she gained height, now their mouths were close and both of them looking at the others lips.
What was going to happen next was interrupted when another song by DrefQuila started playing. The fast beat of the song made them jumped and woke up from the dream and what they were doing and about to. They stepped back for space and when Calum was about to say something they were surprised by Luke’s call.
I can show you somethin' you can run to When I'm finished, you'll be feelin' brand new
“Guys, you need to come to see this” Luke’s harsh breathing showed that he was worried. While Luke guide them to the second floor, he explained them. “So I was going to the bathroom when I found Cami and Ashton dancing and then when I was going back to the bar now she was dancing with a stranger and she seemed uncomfortable and went here for help”.
Rosie frowned her brows at confusion. Luke could easily helped Cami but he didn’t want to misunderstood the situation since he was drunk so he wasn’t sure. When they entered the room, for her surprise it was Matty’s friend -a friend of Cami’s ex-. Immediately she stepped between her best friend and this guy who had Cami trapped in the corner.
“Hey what the hell-” the guys said when he recognized Rosie’s face. The guys didn’t understand a word of what they said. You know, everything in spanish. But they could see the trembling in Cami’s hand. “Look who is! I was just dancing with your friend if you don’t mind” the guy said. Rosie gave him a hit on his shoulders to step back.
“Fuck off, Sergio. If you don’t want to be kick out of this club forever” Rosie said with confidence turning back to ask her friend if she was okay. Ashton appeared standing next to the guys.
“Why to be that grumpy? When you can show me how you dance in that dress” Sergio said when he touched Rosie’s leg. Calum felt how his blood ran faster through his veins and when he was about to hit this guy -even when they were trying not to because they can’t get in trouble- Rosie did justice when she knee him on his balls.
“Why did you just said? Motherfucker” Rosie said while Sergio was in the floor with too much pain to talk. He just let out a ‘whore’ to her.
“Rosie we should go” Cami said wasted when Sergio’s friends appeared next to them founding their friend laying on the floor.
“Hi assholes, we were just leaving but not before giving your friend a lesson” Rosie said slowly leaving the room but another guy stopped her.
“Hell nah, princess” he said trying to hit her. Calum couldn’t resist it anymore, he punched the guy in the face.
“Hey dude what the fuck, were you going to hit a woman?!” Ashton yelled at him. And Cami kicked Sergio on the floor to give him a lesson to not touch her or her friend again. When the guy was about to respond Calum, he dodged the punch.
“K’ we’re leaving now” Calum took Rosie to carry her like the firefighter carry. Ashton did the same with Cami.
“No! We are not leaving!” Rosie said hitting Calum’s back to bring her back to the floor. She wanted to fight the group of assholes but she was drunk like the rest. They started running to the exit of the club with the other guys behind them thirsty of keep fighting.
“Where is Michael?” Luke said desperate and Calum told him where to find him. Luckily, the rest -Dominique, Gigi and Kevin- were with him. Luke told them they have to leave right now.
As they reached the exit, Kevin tripped out Sergio. The security guard asked them what happened and Cami told him when he found the group of guys and banned the stupid guys forever from this club.
“Rosie, I know you can protect yourself but please next time called one of us” the security guard told her with a warning, but before he went back inside he congratulated her. And Gigi apologized to the security guard, and told Cami that it will not be repeated. Gigi said goodbye to everyone and went inside to take control as the Dj.
“What in the hell happened?” Michael missed the whole situation.
“The question is why you leave Cami alone?!” Luke asked Ashton while all of them walk back to the cabin. At this point it isn’t necessary to find a guilty.
“I just went to the bathroom for one minute and when I was back I-” Ashton said.
“Who were those morons?” Calum said, he had a feeling that they know them by the way they knew the girls names.
“They were in our school, our same generation” Kevin said. “They have always been a pain in the ass. They are rude with woman and with everyone. Once I defended Rosie and Cami because they said to every boy in the school that they were ugly girls and other stupid things”.
“Still don’t understand how your ex’s friends with them” Dominique said to Cami. She just mentioned ‘that her ex’s an asshole too’. Dominique reminded her the principal reason why Cami wanted to go to dance tonight. Rosie was carrying her by surrounding her arm around Cami’s waist and Cami put her arm around Rosie’s shoulders. Cami was the drunkest of the group.
“I wanted to do that long time ago” Rosie confessed not regretting what she did even when it sounds evil. She wanted to walk next to Calum to ask about his hand but Cami needed her more.
The night wasn’t ruined, of course it wasn’t nice to end the night like this but the rest of the night was amazing for everyone. Dominique and Kevin said goodbye, they were staying in Dominique girlfriend’s place.

Now back in the cabin, the boys stayed outside sitting in the wooden garden picnic table that it’s in the front while the girls inside Cami begged for something to eat -what chileans called ‘el bajón’- after too much alcohol and dancing.
+
“Guys I have an idea for a song, Michael go get your guitar” Calum said. Michael wasn’t going to do that without asking something.
“Dude before tell us if you both kissed” he said. Ashton and Luke it took them by surprise the question.
“What?!” Both said.
“We didn’t, we just danced” Calum said dry.
“Come on dude, I saw you dancing when I was in charge of the music…” now he was talking to the other two boys “and let me tell you that what I saw it was pretty promising, they were so but SO close and you -pointing at Calum- were blocking Rosie’s figure so I couldn’t see if they were kissing or not” he stood up to go inside and find his guitar. “You’re welcome Cal, I chose the right songs” he said with a teasing smile.
“That’s why you both jumped when I appeared when I asked for help” Luke connected the story. “You were going to do it but I interrupted” he was very surprised.
Calum didn’t want to talk about it, he tried to hide the blush on his cheek. He didn’t want to seem like he doesn’t respect Rosie or that he wanted to take advantage of her. It was just a cool moment they shared, which they let themselves flow with the music, the heat, the energy and let their bodies met to communicate something without words-that Calum wasn’t sure what he wanted to express-one thing for sure is that it made him feel something never experienced before.
+
“Cami it’s ready!” Rosie called her friend that was getting changed into more comfy clothes. She cooked pasta, something quick for everyone who was hungry. She was pouring a glass of water when she saw her friend about to burn herself. “Cami, no!” she hurried to move her friend that was about to dip her hand into the boiling pot with the pasta.
“I was going to check if they were ready!” Cami said, she was still very drunk by finding that a good idea instead of using a piece of cutlery.
“But you have to do it with a fork! Not with your own hand!” she was getting stressed, she took a deep breath and take care of her friend-because she would do the same for her-. “Now eat and then go to bed, please”. They have tons of funny stories from parties, this one is one more to tell to their friends.
+
“Now what?” Michael asked ready with his guitar. Calum started to explain the inspiration of this song.
He realized that at a bar, party or club; there a different types of people. What he saw tonight from his group gave him the idea and the inspiration.
Michael was the kind of always down to meet new people by just went behind the Dj set and have a really good time. Ashton was the kind to meet a beautiful girl or talk to a friend of him and dance, have drinks and maybe having sex in the bathroom -no judgement-. Luke was the kind of getting wasted as fuck because he still misses his ex partner so he would be bartender's best friend just regretting his past. And Calum, he's not sure at all what kind of party person he is, maybe not for every occasion but tonight he was the kind of getting into a fight.
He thought about the countless nights and stories that club could have. That he or you are never going to hear them. Stories that just stay indoors the club.
"If these walls could talk!" Calum said after a couple of guitar chords Michael gave them to find the lyrics. "Yeah, that would be the name of this song". He was really proud and very inspired.
"Did you get all the inspiration from your moment with Rosie?" Luke asked teasing him and testing him what he was going to say.
"No, Luke. Did u hear the whole story I said?" Calum said. It was true that not just Rosie inspired him, the whole night was.
+
"Why they don't go to sleep?" Cami asked sleepy. She can hear the boys singing and the guitar from her room because was the closest to the entry.
"I don't know. Just go to sleep, okay?" Rosie told her and in a few seconds Cami was knocked out. Rosie wanted to go to sleep to but she was curious so she went outside. When the boys saw her they stopped singing like if she was a spy. She rub her arms with her hands at the sudden cold night. "Don't stop playing I'm not going to leak this" she laughed. "I just wanna check if you need something before I go to bed" and the boys told her that they are fine and thanked her. She focused his attention on Calum. "Is your hand okay, Calum?" he nodded at her but she can see the redness in his knuckles.
"Don't worry, I'm going to put ice and it's to be fine" he told her letting her know that he can still play for the next shows.
She felt kinda guilty for that but well she doesn't want to think about it too much. "K' guys goodnight".
When she went to bed she could still hear the boys laughing and throwing verses.
+
The next morning surprisingly Cami didn't have a terrible hangover headache. She has a super power with that - last year at a party on independence day she was so drunk but they needed to leave sober because Cami's mother was waiting for her in the living room and before they got inside she just walked around the neighborhood to have some air so the drunkenness could be less noticeable and it worked or that's what she thought, because her mama is not a fool.
"First of all guys, sorry for last night I fucked up everything" Cami apologized before she turned on her car. The guys let her know that everything is fine.
Once they were in the hotel's parking lot they sadly said goodbye but Ashton promised them he will come back soon and that they are always welcome in LA or Australia.
In their own hotel rooms, they took an early nap at 11 am even when they can sleep in the plane too because their flight was at 5 am to Argentina.
Rosie talked with her family about London and Cami told her parents about her breakup. They are not rockstars so they have to continue their lives.
+
It was almost 4 pm when Rosie arrived her grandfather's bar. Today the bar opens late so she had the dance floor just for her to practice, well, she had to share the space with the bar's band when they arrived early to practice and set the instruments. She and the 'Dominos' are friends so they always help her to practice with live music instead of hearing the songs from her phone.
"Thanks guys for always helping me, now I need to practice the dance for the other class" Rosie said when she handled the musical score to them. That week she had exams for her jazz class, dance performance class and ballet, so she couldn't relax right now.
"Sweetie I know this song perfectly" one of the band members said. And 'More than a woman' by Bee Gees started. She has to present this one for dance performance and her Tony Manero was -thank God- her good friend and really good student, Andre.
When she thought it was enough because she preferred Andre to be there, she moved on with the song for jazz class.
"K' guys this is not that famous like the previous one" she handled the music scores of the song 'Maria' by the Silver Linings soundtrack -from that movie she took the song that obviously is older than the movie-. She practiced her solo because this is a group project too.
It was 6 pm when on the other side of the door Ashton was waiting in the car and told Calum to go find you. And when nobody answered but heard the music and saw the 'close' sign on the door he just opened the door and he found her dancing too damn focused on the routine.
It was the first time he saw her dancing something not related to club. At her purest with a classic dance. He imagined her with a beautiful dress presenting this to her class and he couldn't imagine a bad grade for her, the teachers would be crazy if they would ever do that. When she finished and waited 3 more seconds that she stayed in the final bow, he started clapping.
"Gosh, Calum you have to stop always greeting me like this" she said when she saw him leaning on the door.
"Well, Miss Rivera if you don't turn on all the speakers you could hear when someone is knocking on the door" he gave her an advice in a teasing tone and smile while he walked closer to the dance floor. "Hi".
"Hi Calum, don't offend but what are you doing here? you should be taking a plane" she said confused.
"See my lady, our flight is very late and we wanted to spend more time with you" he said not telling her the truth. The truth was that Mario invited the guys to the house for tea to celebrate the great news of Rosie's exchange.
"I would love to but I have to practice a little bit more" she bit her lower lip resisting to his invitation. And an idea clicked in her head. "As my dance partner is not here, what if you help me and at the same time I teach you how to dance" she said excited grabbing him by his arm. Before Calum could protest, the music was playing and she showed him simple jazz moves that even a mummy could do. He wasn't prepared for part of the deal to be done that day.
"But I didn't have my bass here to teach you" he said before she grabbed his hand to put in practice what she taught him.
"K' put your right hand on my waist" she could tell that he was nervous. "Come on, Cal. I'm not going to bite you". He placed his hand where she told him and the other one held her hand. She remembered him to have fun and that just the guys from the band were watching them.
The music started playing by the instruments and it sounded exactly like the original song. The melody is so peaceful and beautiful that he would never get tired of it.
At the start his moves were messy and off rhythm to follow hers. But he took her words, took a deep breath and like last night just flow. And as he relaxed, they started moving around the dance floor and the room. This moment is so charming that even if he never gets to see her again, he's going to remember this moment forever. How the warm lights looked against their silhouettes, the fun he was having and how she looked already like a professional dancer for him.
The outro of the song was coming, and just like the movie, he took her after her solo and turn around and then again holding her and made a mental picture of the proximity- chest to chest - before he leaned her back back and his face close to her neck when the last chords of jazz sounded. They stayed there a couple of seconds catching their breaths -by the clothes she was wearing to practice, he could see the skin of her neckline and how it went up and down after 4 minutes of dancing.
"You were amazing!" she told him once he helped her to stand straight again. She told him her thoughts and it was better than she expected. He blushed at the comments.
"I can see you doing this in big projects" he encouraged her. He was dreaming big and she thanked him and called him crazy at the same time.
"Okay so if I ever reach those big projects you are talking about, I hope I auditioned with this song" or at least remember this moment.
Calum waited for her in the room while she changed her clothes. Then he lead her to the car.
"Ashton! Hi!" Rosie greeted him with a hug inside the back of the car.
"I've been waiting for you two. What the hell, did you found the cure for cancer?" he said referring to all the time he waited.
"I'm so happy to see you again too, Ash" she joked and squeezed his cheeks.
The boys were not telling her the surprise and threatened them to scream if they don't tell her, but when she recognized the well known route she stopped asking.
"What are we doing in Cami's house?" she asked and when they opened the front door everyone jumped to scream 'surprise'.
Michael and Luke were already there. Cami's whole family too. Her parents and her grandfather. Her friends from last night too.
She greeted everyone with a big hug and smile.
During all night Rosie, Cami and Mario helped translating to the rest.
The house is huge because with 4 children in the family and from different ages. They needed their own room. It has a garage, a big backyard and a lot of space in the hallways.
Rosie was so excited to see Max - Cami's 4 years old little brother -. He had been so busy with his therapy. When guys met him they understood what Cami told them about being worry of bullies in his school. Max is on a wheelchair after an accident when he was 3 years old. He's been in the chair since then but attends a special foundation to help him to recover because he has possibilities to walk again.
"Yeah it's been a hard year but I would do anything for my kids" Marcela - Cami's mom - told the boys when they asked politely.
"But the system still sucks, the state of this country should pay for treatments and give them the basic amenities like transport" Rosie said abruptly angry but everyone feels the same. Marcela has to take the subway in summer and winter, melting with the heat or freezing with the low temperatures at 7 am every single morning, and even when there is campaigns to collect money isn't enough because Cami's family spends a lot of money on it.
Max , or Maxi is how he likes to be called, is the funniest kid in the world and so talented in everything.
"Maxi what if you show the boys what you wanted" Cami told him helping him to go to the garage. Maxi was very nervous that night but shyly he asked Cami to told the boys that he is a big fan and that Ashton is his favorite member.
"He's been playing the drums since he got it from last Christmas" Rosie told them. He is unbelievable because at age of 2 he learned traditional latin dances, now the drums and he loves to learn different things every day.
"Do you need help with the bass drum, buddy?" Ashton offered his help and he couldn't say no to his idol. He played first his favorite Chilean song from an andino group - which Ashton freestyled when to play the bass drum - and then he surprised them playing 'Don't Stop' - his favorite -. The guys clapped and cheered him like a champion because he freaking nailed it.
"Okay Maxi, what if know we go sit to have dinner" Gabriel told him because he knows his child that he can be playing all night. Everyone took a seat and had the chance to know the rest of the families. Mario did a review of how he knows Ashton.
"This man right here is like a hero" Gabriel said. "You know thanks to him I met my wife" And he told the guys the story of it. When during the dictatorship Mario hid Gabriel and his family in the closets when soldiers  always interrupted his house. Mario was always a suspicious for being a journalist and his well known opinion against dictatorship, so a lot of times soldiers broke his things that they found out of order - most of the times they just burned books related to arts, music, all books to be honest -. Mario always laughed at their tiny minds because they always appeared at the same time and the same days of the week so Gabriel and his family were already secure in the secret place.
"And one night Marcela was running from them because the curfew caught her when she was leaving a friend's house. So desperately she asked my wife to help her or the soldiers were going to kill her" Mario continued the story. And Antonia - Mario's wife and Rosie's grandmother - helped Marcela and she met Gabriel. Even in terrible times good things happened but of course till today South America can't recover from that horrendous years and never going to forget or forgive what happened because till today people are looking for their disappear loved ones.
Then Joy - Rosie's mother - served dessert and Luke asked her for another slice of her famous apple pie.
They kept talking after dessert, then Maxi asked them to go with him to his room to see his new football ball and his collection of Star Wars Lego toys. The boys felt kinda jealous of Maxi because of the cool things. Ashton was still surprised for the drums, Calum went directly to the ball and play with Maxi a little bit and Michael made Maxi promise him to take care of any Star Wars thing he could receive. At the frame of the door Cami supervised that her brother didn't injure himself but she smiled watching him interacting with other people and felt comfortable because she knows the hell it could be when people bullies you in school.
"Okay Maxi now look at the camera" Marcela said when she asked the guys for a picture and all of them kneeled down at his height. "Good job baby, now you are going to be even coolest boy in this city". She was cheering him, he just met one of his favorite bands.
It was time to say goodbye, sadly. They promised Mario to come back and Ashton told the girls to keep in contact. They wished Rosie good luck and told Maxi that he is going to get out the chair sooner than he thought and that he can call Ash to threaten the bullies. A lot of hugs, good wishes and 'thanks for the lovely dinner' before the boys went directly to the airport.
+
Joy went to Cami's room where her daughter was talking to her best friend and told her that they were going home.
Once in their place, Arthur - Rosie's father - went directly to bed after he congratulated his daughter. And Joy wanted to talk with Rosie about something.
"They are pretty funny guys" Joy said sitting on the edge of the bed.
"Yeah. I thought that they were going to be assholes or divas but no" Rosie said ordering her clothes spilled all over a chair.
"Yeah, Mario told me a fight happened last night" she said worried.
"Oh don't worry, mom. It was some pervs but I put them in their place but the guys helped to "stop" the fight" Rosie explained without looking at her.
"Yeah, sweetie I just want to make sure that don't get your expectations too high about a guy right now" Joy grabbed her hand to stop her cleaning her room. "You are going to go to London and I just want for you success in this exchange" she smiles at her and Rosie was surprised because she knows her mom's opinion when she dropped University to follow her dream of being a dancer.
"Thank you, mom" she hugged her before she left her alone in her room. That's what you can call 'process' to Joy's attitude. She knows that her dad feels the same way but she understood why the last few months he is been acting weird because his job is not that easy.

1 month later
Rosie was waiting for her call outside the gate, she was in Roma and not to be rude but her first impression of Italians wasn't the best. Pure chaos the Roma's airport, another language, people yelling, little amount of sleep, anxiety, excited, a mix of everything, but she is going to get used to it because London is going to be no different from chaos.
And after the very first week on London she confirmed. The university was dreamy, she wishes that all academies would look the same, but there is a teacher that is a pain in the ass. Also what about all of the combinations of the subway? and she still thinks that why english have to contradict everything. She had euros to buy in Italy then changed them to pound for England, the opposite side of the driver in the cars that confused her the first time she called an uber.
Thanks to the universe that she has friendly roommates. Two of them from Argentina, one from Puerto Rico and one from Spain. She lives with them inside the campus and all of them from different careers too.
Her dancers friends by now are Darren who is from Glasgow, twin brothers Louis and Lewis from France and Sarah from Jamaica.
By far she had explored London by her own, sometimes she asks the exchange supervisor for basic stuff like bank, market, drugstore, museums, etc. But for the rest of the fun she just goes out with her friends or her roommates.
"Sorry if it's too early" Rosie said to Cami. They facetime almost every day, but still forgets the different time zones. We already know that Cami is not a morning person.
"It's fine, I have to go with Maxi to his therapy" Cami said "So how it went your first exam with that evil teacher?"
"I passed, but she's a pain in the ass. Now we have to practice the triple for the annual dance show" Rosie said while she was having lunch and Cami breakfast.
"Cool! Rosie don't see this as a bad thing because you have to spend more time with your teacher, you have to see this as an opportunity" her friend was right, she had seen the theaters in London and they are huge and a lot of plays everywhere. She went to Harry Potter's play and one day saw Orlando Bloom in the street. Darren was disappointed the day they went to Winston castle and didn't meet the queen. 'You can invite the queen to a cup of tea another day' Rosie told him, she didn't understand his love for the royal family but he thanked her for the motivation.
"If she doesn't kill us before the show, thanks and say hi to everyone! Gotta go we have to go to class". Rosie hanged up.
As always, her wise friend helped her to see the situation with another perspective and she has to enjoy the next months in London because things are going to get interesting.
Be honest You want this (You want this) But I can be heartless Regardless of my conscience

I hid my head under my pillow as I heard knock after knock on the door. The sound became so tired that I had to wake up.
I picked up the sheets I had thrown on the floor during the night, the only window the room had was stuck, I could not open it to get rid of the awful heat that enveloped the room. I looked around in search of the gown that matched my pink silk nightgown, between the sleep and the incessant knocking, I left it behind and opened the door.
“Princess, forgive me... “Luke's gaze studied my silhouette in front of him, instinctively I covered my cleavage, embracing my arms. Annoyed.
“I rather don´t forgive you, thank you very much. What's wrong... “ I tried to correct my tone “... your majesty?” and I failed.
Luke ran a hand through his shiny blonde hair, I had barely had time to look at it in the sunshine coming through the windows in the hallway.
“I didn't know the disrespect started so early, or I would have asked someone else to come and wake you up, princess," he said mockingly, I grimaced. “We leave the palace in an hour, wear something comfortable, and pack lightly.”
He turned around, I stopped him holding his shirt.
“Where are we going?” I asked, quickly covering myself again, he laughed at my action. “Tell me.”
“It is a Gardenstone tradition to share a little trip to the town of Mudtry when welcoming Maredale, now that Queen Elizabeth is coming back here we must leave," he explained. In a moment of distraction, he took my hands gently, letting them fall to my side. “Even though you look better like this, I recommend a coat. It's cold over there, Princess.”
I covered myself again, he laughed again and walked down the corridor.
“Idiot," I muttered.
“Pain in the ass!” he shouted around the corner.
¥
I don't remember ever having been so solicited as this morning, even the instructions came out with little energy and no firmness, it probably wasn't the lack of being needed that made me feel this way, it was the sour taste in my mouth since Ashton decided not to speak to me.
I relived the scene as I watched the blue decorations glow everywhere; I had looked for him when I returned from a few good hours in the greenhouse, knocked on his door, waited patiently outside believing that he would come out at any moment, he did not. Instead, he turned off the lights. I wanted to apologize for my reaction, I had ruined the beautiful atmosphere we had arranged and I longed for his forgiveness perhaps more than I should have. I also didn't know how we were going to talk without mentioning his proposal. I still didn't tell my mother.
“Princess, do you consider it appropriate to roll out the red carpet for the arrival of Queen Elizabeth?” Calum asked, for the third time this morning.
“No, Calum, like the two previous times I do not consider it appropriate since she is only returning from Maredale.”
I replied wearily that it did not go unnoticed, his brown eyes searching for a sign of sarcasm.
“I'm sorry," he corrected himself as he noticed the presence of servants around us, "-Your Highness, for the insistence. His Majesty, King Luke, wishes everything to be in order for your mother's arrival.”
Luke showed - with his attention to detail and investment in perfecting the palace - his clear interest in my mother's return. After all, my mother was the only leader who could bestow real knowledge of value on Luke... even on Ashton, but she wouldn't just do that. Compared to me, the great Queen Elizabeth always has backup plans, analyzes her moves, and lays her cards on the table with all the elegance and authority that can exist in a single human being.
Therefore, my mother's return was important to Luke. An opportunity to learn that he should exploit. And he knew it, his majesty knew it. So he had relieved me of my greenhouse duties and put servants to work in the greenhouse during my mother's stay at the palace, at last, a decent decision.
“Speaking of which, His Majesty the King asked me to give you this portfolio” Calum's arms managed to swing samples of cloth and other paperwork and extend a somewhat thick grey portfolio to me. “It contains your first official cases to be dealt with as Maredale's ambassador.”
I took it with fear that the emotion would shoot out of my fingertips.
“Thank you.”
Calum knew I was serious. Even if it was a bribe to keep quiet about the work I had been doing in the greenhouse or organizing the picnic, the words "official cases" made me smile broadly.
“There is an office available... in the east wing one floor up from his room in case you´d  like to look at documents away from this mess.”
I nodded excitedly. I turned around and started my way to the office.
Every step, every step I took was done without my absolute concentration. My mind was distracted by the real actions I could perform during these days, the happy face of the Maredan people who wanted to settle in the capital at the moment of telling them that it was a possibility and that it was going to happen filled me with happiness. It was time to contact the people who had asked, maybe persuade Luke to finance some of the cases now was something I could do.
“Amberly," Michael's voice cut through my step, "What are you doing here?”
He was just a few feet away from me coming out of his room, I guessed. Dressed in his typical casual attire of a loose black shirt and comfortable pants.
“Calum gave me this," I happily shook my portfolio and said the following in a shriek: "This is real work!”
Michael laughed nervously at my gesture.
“I'm going to the office two floors up, are you coming?” I invited him, he opened his mouth and babbled out. “What's going on?”
“There's an unoccupied one in the west wing..." he spoke quickly without fear of getting stuck. “I have to go but I'll see you there, okay?”
He closed the door behind him after struggling with the handle, each action more clumsy than the last.
“Of course... “
He pointed to the stairs in a gesture to indicate the change of direction. I nodded, watching his sudden change of... stability.
Without arguing, I walked up the stairs for the remaining two floors. I looked down the long hallway leading to the west wing, diving into the east. A couple of steps joined me a short distance from the door that I assumed was the office. I stopped short and turned, bumping into a figure taller and stronger than me. The portfolio crumpled up against me.
“It's okay- Oh.”
Ashton spoke in front of me. I felt my tongue entangled in my mouth, all the things I wanted to say were trapped in my mouth and I couldn't get them out.
His eyes still had a certain glow in them, he wasn't going to be rude now, I hoped he would be willing to talk... watching his posture and the fact that he didn't bother to increase the distance between us, he even seemed ready to do so.
“I..." I said, at last. “I did not expect to find you here.”
“I come from the other wing... I called my sister in the office, they have a good reception there.”
His voice came out flat, I felt a hand squeeze my heart as I remembered that same voice asking to be his queen under the moonlight...
“I want to apologize” I waited, closing my eyes for a moment to put my words in order. “It was not my intention to answer you like that, I was unprepared and I... did not know that the subject needed an immediate answer…”
I placed the hand that held the portfolio at my side and the other hand slowly approached his, I caressed it waiting for an answer. His glance saw something behind me and fixed on my face gently.
“I understand if you're upset with me, I thought that-”
He joined our lips in a fast and firm movement, passing a hand to my waist. The one I previously caressed closed with mine. I breathed in his essence; masculine and with traces of vanilla; before breaking the kiss.
“Everything's fine, Amberly..." he said in a sensual whisper brushing our noses. “We are fine.”
I nodded and we shared a smile, my cheeks felt warm which made me move away from him amicably.
“Wow, a reconciliation of pathetic lovebirds. Your bags for Mudtry won't be packed alone.”
We both turned around, finding Luke leaning against the door he should have entered, forcing a smile. He had a book in his hands and grabbed it tightly, judging by his white knuckles.
More steps joined in, Michael looked at all of us as he continued walking, stopping between Luke and us. Calum came up behind him practically running.
“What happened?” Luke asked, his blue eyes traveling between Michael and Calum to Ashton and me, who clearly had no idea. “Speak up, that's an order.”
Calum stepped forward, barely catching his breath.
“Your Majesty, there was a problem with... the horses, you see.”
While Calum and Michael were talking to Luke about a problem they had pulled out of their sleeves, Ashton approached them to hear the same. He probably knew it was made up, but knowing him, he wouldn't miss the opportunity to see them humiliate themselves.
I looked at the four of them: two kings, a duke, and a royal advisor. I remembered the time Ashton told me that they used to play together, or rather fight, the simple image of those four figures living together innocently made me laugh out loud. Who knows how much trouble they would have gotten into together, the universe wasn't ready for that... maybe that's why they were now separated in some way.
¥
“Lidia, it's very important that you take the portfolio to Duke Clifford," I pouted without moving from the mirror. “Please.”
We laughed at the same time, Lidia shook her head and patted my right shoulder.
When I finished my work in the office, I thought it was not a bad option to ask Lidia to take the portfolio to Michael, something could come out of that contact the maid wanted so much.
“Okay.”
I jumped up with euphoria and wrapped my arms around her, holding her tight and then looking at her with emotion.
“Your outfit!” she exclaimed, making me stop. “I'll take the briefcase, but I'm not promising anything, that's enough for now.”
I took some fabric samples from the chest of drawers and pretended to give them to her in a seductive voice, "Oh, Duke, take the portfolio... and my heart!”
She burst out laughing, snatching the samples from me and leaving them in their place.
Lidia took me by the shoulders and positioned me in front of the mirror again. “I hope her majesty Queen Elizabeth will like my choice.”
“Queen Elizabeth loves your choice. It captures the comfort and the countryside to perfection.”
Hearing my mother's voice standing at the door, I jumped up to her in an embrace. After that, she insisted on having things to talk to me about before the trip and we walked with our arms intertwined through the gardens.
“It is strange to be here without Robert and Susan, may they rest in peace.”
The desire to know more about the life of the kings fell silent on its own as I remembered the incident - the murder. They had been my mother's friends, as far as I knew, but I couldn't reveal to her what Michael and Calum had discovered, even Luke didn't know.
“You look a little lost, daughter," my mother said, nudging me sideways. “Tell me about your work, is it everything you wanted?”
Memories of my work in the greenhouse crossed my mind. The effort took to make some progress in the first few days, including my day in the barn. But that wasn't my job at the end of the day, helping out was. On the sly or just for blackmail, there was 'my grain of sand' as we used to say in Maredale.
“It's been... satisfying," I sighed. “I understand why you like being a queen, you can help people and you have the power to do it in your hands.”
“Oh, little one... the power is there when you have the intention. There is nothing to stop you if you have your aim clear.”
The voice of reason had returned and I was very grateful for it. I squeezed her hand lightly and she gestured back to me.
Two young girls passed in front of us carrying their instruments in a cart to transport them to Mudtry and began to play typical Maredale music given by a harp and a violin. Calum who was passing by approached us as he heard the music and rushed to the girls, surely.
“What a marvel! “exclaimed my mother. She let go of my arm and linked hers with Calum's." Young Hood, you must grant me this piece.”
Calum fired an alarmed look before being dragged into the middle of the garden by my mother.
“Poor Calum, he hasn't danced in a good six months.”
Michael stood next to me, watching the queen and the political advisor dance around each other with humor.
“And apparently the Queen didn't either," we laughed. He came a little closer to me, speaking at the level of my left ear.
“ You didn't say anything to her majesty, did you? About what I showed you?”
I shook my head.
“Not at all. But I won't be able to keep silent any longer, you have to tell Luke.”
He laughed softly, neither of them had turned their eyes away from Calum and my mother.
“Oh, no. You will, Amberly.”
No, it wasn't my business. No. A resounding "no".
“Very funny, Duke. -Do I have to laugh now?” I asked with growing anger, he rolled his eyes hesitantly. “I won't do it, I have nothing to do with it.”
“You were there, weren't you?”
“So? YOU found it," I frowned and folded my arms in front of him. “Tell me one good reason why I should do it and I'll go right now.”
Michael crossed his arms as I did, we were terrifyingly close to each other, he opened his mouth a couple of times to talk but nothing came out.
“See?”
I smiled in victory mode with my lips closed. He imitated my gesture.
“It's a direct order from your boss, honey.”
I took a breath to respond when a hand-pulled Michael's shirt abruptly, causing him to stumble backward. Ashton's body came between Michael and my mother's view of the garden, preventing anyone from seeing the scene.
“What are you doing?!” I exclaimed quietly, helping Michael get up from the grass. He shook off the dirt and tried to grab Ashton by the collar of his shirt, so I held his hand. Michael took a step back and I stood between the two of them. “Quiet, both of you!”
Ashton raised an accusing finger near Michael's face, who was still behind me.
“You better keep those compliments to yourself, Clifford. Just because you need them doesn't mean Amberly needs them. Excuse me.”
“Ash... “I muttered walking behind him, he adjusted his grip on my wrist. “Ashton, you're hurting me!”
I exclaimed, releasing my wrist with a strong tug, rubbed it with my other hand, and stopped short. We were closer to the greenhouse than to the celebration, the sun giving the last of its rays announcing nightfall.
“What happened to you? You shouldn't have-”
His arms were wrapped securely around my waist, he approached me with a strong kiss... no, possessive, it felt like he owned me.
We walked away after a few seconds, his face at a distance where his words were barely understandable, nothing more in my field of vision than his glowing eyes overflowing with intensity.
“I don't like it. Both of you spending time together... not since you  were found in the office alone.”
I placed both hands on his chest, asking for some space to think.
“I explained that nothing happened-”
“-Unless it's for work, I don't want you anywhere near Michael.”
I was silent for a moment, it didn't seem like a favor, a recommendation... it was an order.
He kissed the corner of my mouth with exasperating slowness.
“Understood, Amberly?”
I nodded.
The next voice heard was Luke interrupting the music, my mother's dancing, and the closeness between Ashton and me.
“Let the journey begin.”

 Masterlist
____________________________
Calum played phenomenally but he was only half present during the whole show. His fingers played the correct notes and chords, he interacted with the boys and the crowd but his mind was on Holly and Kai. He hadn’t heard anything from her so no news is good news, right?
Finally, when they played the last song he was the first to run off the stage and find his phone. Holly sent him text updates that ended at 10:30 when she said Kai’s fever was gone. He explained to the guys he had to leave and they understood so they let him go.
When Calum arrived in the hotel room, Little Bear was playing on the tv screen and he found Holly and Kai fast asleep on her bed. He was wrapped in his blanket with his thumb in his mouth snuggled into her chest. Calum toed off his shoes and picked Kai up so he can sleep in his crib.
Holly shifts in her sleep then she wakes up to see Calum.
“Oh man, did I fall asleep?” she asks groggily.
“You both did,” he smiles. “Go back to bed, I’ve got him if he wakes up.”
“Kay,” she says thickly.
To Calum’s complete surprise, her arms twisted behind her back and she pulled her bra off through the sleeves of her large sweatshirt. Then she slides off her leggings and slips on some pajama shorts and crawls underneath the covers.
Calum blinks quickly trying to process what he’d just witnessed. She undressed right in front of him. Kai made a noise pulling Calum’s gaze from Holly’s figure under the covers and turned to check his son. He was still sound asleep so Calum changed out of his clothes and put on some joggers and left his shirt off.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
 It’s been a few weeks since Kai’s fever and when Calum witnessed Holly unintentionally undressing in front of him. He’s been trying to push his feelings down and away, he can’t have feelings for his son’s nanny. That’s just not right and would be mixing business with pleasure but when he sees her smile and laugh with Kai, his morals are thrown completely to the wind.
“Okay man,” Michael sighs while they’re out exploring Italy. He wraps his arm around his best friend’s shoulders. “It’s been a few months now since Holly’s been with us and you haven’t asked her out yet.”
 “I changed my mind,” Calum mumbles placing his aviators on his face.
“How can you change your mind? You’ve been pining over her for weeks.”
“It just wouldn’t be a good idea, Mikey,” Calum sighs watching Kai and Holly walking in front of them. Kai has on a small black hat and it makes him look like a little gentleman as he points to different sights in her arms.
“Why not?”
“What if it doesn’t end well? She’s a great nanny to Kai and I don’t want to ruin that.”
“But if it does end well then she could be Kai’s mum for real. I know Jane hurt you bad and your stance on love is just one big ‘fuck it all’ but,” Mikey shakes his head. “I don’t know. You’ve changed since she came into your life.”
Calum, Holly, Michael and Kai ended up getting gelato in a small gelato shop. Kai was sitting in Calum’s lap as he licked off of Calum’s cone and he had strawberry gelato smeared all over his face. Holly thought it was the cutest thing and took out her phone to take photos and videos.
“You’re such a funny little bean,” Holly laughs wiping the frozen treat from Kai’s face.
“Hey Holly, you like The Struts, right?” Michael asks nonchalantly.
“Yeah, they’re a great band,” she nods going to lick her gelato.
“We got free tickets to go to their concert tonight but Crystal and Sierra are flying in and they want to double with me and Luke. Would you want to take the tickets, you and Calum?”
“Ashton doesn’t want to go?” Holly asks and Calum is giving a hard look at Michael knowing exactly what he’s doing.
“He said he wanted to watch superhero movies with Kai tonight,” Michael laughs looking at Kai who had gelato on his face again. “Come on, at least two of us should go, I’ll feel bad if none of us go.”
“Yeah, that sounds fun,” Holly smiles. “I haven’t been to a concert in ages.”
“Not like you’re touring with a band or anything,” Calum snorts taking a lick from his cone. His eyes playful as he looks at Holly.
“I’m watching a little human during said band’s concerts,” she retorts with a smirk and Calum smiles.
“All right, Kai-guy,” Calum says, “I think you’re finished with Daddy’s gelato.” He bounces Kai on his knee.
For the rest of the time there Michael gave himself a pat on the back for setting Calum and Holly up on this date. He can’t wait to tell Crystal about it, she’ll be pleased and will maybe even reward him for his job well done.
 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Calum went to Ashton’s room with Kai while Holly was getting ready for the concert. She told him she’d be ready by the time he got back, and Calum’s been around Crystal and Sierra long enough to know that girls don’t typically get ready in fifteen minutes or less.
“Kai-Kai!” Ashton greets Kai with a big smile on his face. He lifts him in his arms when Calum sets him on the floor and tickles his tummy. “You excited for the big date tonight?”
“It’s not a date, Ash,” Calum rolls his eyes setting Kai’s diaper bag on the floor, and places his blanket on the bed.
“You’re going to a concert and dinner, without Kai and none of us. It’s a date, man.”
“If it’s a date then Michael’s the one who planned it. I’ve got his bottle in the bag and some cheerios. His bedtime has been at 8:30ish lately, make sure to change him before then,” Calum tells him.
“Cal, I know what to do with my nephew. He’s in good hands.”
“Thanks. Okay, buddy, Daddy’s got to go now. C’mere and give me a hug.” Calum gives Kai a hug and a kiss on his cheek before handing him back to Ashton.
“Hey Cal,” Ashton calls stopping Calum halfway out the door. “If the date goes well and you and Holly want your room to yourself, I’ve got Kai duty all night.” He casts a wink and Calum just shakes his head before closing the door.
Calum can’t help the thoughts Ashton so generously put into his head of spending the night with Holly. Granted he spent every night with Holly but in different beds and on separate sides of the room, but still. He knocked once on his and Holly’s hotel door before sliding the key card in.
When he opened the door she was standing before him wearing a denim blue button up shirt tucked into white jean shorts. He was met with her perfume and he groaned at the sight of her, this was going to be a long night.
“Wow, you are ready,” he grins.
“Told you I would be,” she smiles stepping out in the hallway next to him, closing the door behind her. “It’s one of my many talents of getting ready in record time.”
“You’ve got other talents?” he quirked an eyebrow looking down at her. “Like what?”
“All in due time, my friend,” she smirks and Calum hears the flirtation in her voice.
The concert is a blast and Holly danced along to every song, even if she didn’t know the lyrics. Calum was impressed with how well she drank her alcohol and loved seeing her have a great time.
“Oh, this is such a good song!” she exclaims when Somebody New begins to play.
“This is for all of you have been heartbroken in the past, if you’ve got someone in your life right now, don’t let them go.”
Calum’s gaze is locked on Holly as he listens to the singer’s words. Holly’s singing along and swaying to the melody with her eyes closed and Calum’s made up his mind. Yes, he’s been hurt in the past, love can be cruel but Holly is anything but. With her eyes closed she looks so tempting just living in the moment.
Calum grabs hold of her hip spinning her to face him, and before she can open her eyes he plants his lips on hers, his palm bracing her lower back. He releases her lips a moment after and looks down at her, waiting for a reaction.
Her mouth is open in surprise and then she wraps her arms around his neck and kisses him again, making sure she kept her drink held up in the air so she wouldn’t spill it. Calum kisses her back eagerly, his arms pulling her close as their lips mold together, he feels her smile against his lips and he uses that opportunity to slip his tongue in her mouth.
They only stop kissing when the song ends and the crowd around them explodes in applause. Their eyes meet with big smiles on their faces, he strokes her cheek and runs his thumb over her bottom lip.
“I’ve wanted to do that for some time,” he admits.
“I’ve been wanting you to do that for some time,” she smiles and Calum feels a warm glow in his stomach at her words.
 <<<<<<<
They share a few more short kisses throughout the night and when they arrive at the hotel at almost one o’clock, she turns to face him when he opens their hotel door for her.
“Are you going to go get Kai?” she asks biting her lip and it makes him want to kiss her again.
“Ash said he’s glad to have him spend the night,” he answers shutting the door with a snap. He watches her kick off her shoes and plop her purse on the table.
“That’s nice of him,” she says pursing her lips.
“Mhm,” he steps closer to her, his gaze never straying from her eyes and her lips. “He’s a swell guy.”
They’re standing extremely close, his breath blows on her face and she lets out a shaky sigh. The alcohol wasn’t as potent and she was nervous being this close to him but something in her made her reach her hand out and skim her fingers over his tattoos that are showing from under his black t-shirt.
“You’re swole,” she bites her lip and he chuckles.
“How’re you so cute?” he holds onto her waist and she shrugs slipping her finger under cuff of his sleeve.
When he can’t stand it anymore, he leans down and presses his lips to hers. She runs her hand up his bicep until she places it on his cheek then threads her fingers through his dark curls. He pulled her closer until their chests are pressed together. Holly stretches up on her toes resulting in Calum’s hands sliding down the curve of her ass and he doesn’t hesitate in squeezing it through her shorts.
A slight moan escapes her and he backs up until the backs of his knees hit the bed. He sits down pulling her onto his lap and his left hand cups her cheek, his tongue swirling around hers. He lowers his hand down her chest and his fingers unbutton her shirt slowly. He untucks it from her shorts then his palms hold onto her stomach, his rings cool against her hot skin.
He drags his lips over her jaw and she lifts her head giving him more access as he sucks on her neck and skims his lips over the swell of her breasts. He opens his eyes for the first time and sighs at the sight before him. She’s wearing a pretty purple bra—now his favorite color—and her chest is heaving rapidly as she slips her arms out of the sleeves, tossing it beside her on the floor.
“I’m sorry, they're not that big,” she mutters and Calum tears his gaze from her chest to her eyes.
“You’ve got nothing to apologize for, darlin’,” he shakes his head while she plays with the curls by his ears. “You’re perfect.”
His hands undo the clasp of her bra, the straps falling effortlessly down her shoulders, and when he tosses the fabric across the room he stands up with her in his arms and turns around so he can toss her on the bed. She squeals at the movement sliding her feet up so her knees are in the air.
“If my shirt’s off, yours needs to be, too,” she breathes.
He grins tugging his shirt up from his neck throwing it behind him before crawling up her body, his knee finding homage between her legs. She smiles at him before they kissed heatedly and her hands roam over his sides and all up on his back. He shivers at her touch and lets out a groan when her nails scratch down his back.
He leaves a trail of hot kisses down her chest, making a pit stop at her breast to kiss her nipple, flicking his tongue and grazing his teeth over her nipple; her fingers pull on his hair as she moans at the sensation.
“Hmm, you like when I bite?” he exhales glancing up at her and she nods, her eyes full of desire. Full of desire for him and he moves to her other breast giving it the same type of treatment, they’re so soft and plush in his mouth, but he wants to explore the rest of her body. He continues his journey down her torso and sucks on her stomach.
“That tickles!” she squeaks sucking in her stomach and they both laugh.
“Sorry,” he chuckles kneeling in front of her. He unsnaps the button on her shorts, pulling the zipper down slowly and pulls them off her body even slower. He wants to relish this moment and tease her along the way as well.
He jerks her towards him by her hips and her hair fans out behind her as she opens herself up to him, her breathing is ragged and Calum’s stomach is a ball of excitement. His pants become too tight so he stands up and disposes of them quickly so he’s just in his boxers.
He takes his place back in between her legs, looking up at her while he kisses down the inside of her thighs, he teases her by pressing a soft kiss above her core as he kisses her other thigh. She lets out a noise of impatience.
“Do you like when I tease you?” he asks nipping at her skin, his finger rubbing her stomach.
“No. I don't like—“
Before she can finish her sentence Calum dives in by sticking his tongue right inside of her, his mouth taking her lips in his. His eyes stay on hers as she gasps at the abruptness of his actions, her back arching immediately and her fingers fist the comforter beneath her. Calum smirks and licks at her center rapidly, darting his tongue in and out.
He removes his right hand from her hip, and does a long swipe of his tongue up her pussy before sliding his finger inside her, curling it when he’s knuckle deep. She gasps and moans, her right hand snatching up his left hand holding it tightly as he pleasures her. Her leg falls down on the bed giving Calum more access and he pumps and curls his finger faster, using his tongue to wiggle on her clit and she’s moaning and writhing under his mouth.
He watches her as her eyes closed, her back arching with a loud moan bursts from her mouth as her body tenses as she orgasms, her mouth open in a perfect little ‘o.’ Calum pulls his finger out slowly and kitten licks her core before sliding back on the bed to hover above her, his boxer covered hard on brushes against where she’s sensitive and her body rolls into him instinctually.
“How was that?” he asks pulling on her bottom lip with his thumb.
“Fucking wonderful,” she sighs dragging his hand back to her mouth. Keeping her eyes on him she takes his middle finger that he used on her and slides it into her mouth.
He stares in amazement as she sucks her taste off his finger, her tongue swirling up and down the length of his finger and he can only imagine what that would feel like around his dick. She moans around his finger and brings her other hand down to his boxers and grabs him. She rubs his dick through the fabric and with her sucking on his thumb and now her hand is slipping into his boxers stroking him gently he could come right there.
He yanked his finger from her mouth so he can crush his lips to hers and she continues to pump him slowly, her thumb making circles over his tip and he rotates his hips with her motion.
“Can I pleasure you now?” she murmurs against his lips.
He blows out a big breath and yanked his boxers down and off his legs, he falls back onto the bed and she kneels next to him. He places his hand on her back, rubbing it up and down as he watches her flip her hair behind her shoulder. She swipes her finger up his shaft, circling her finger around his tip.
“Now who’s teasing?” he grunts pinching her waist.
She flashes him an adorable yet sexy smile leaning up to give him a quick kiss. “That’s my specialty, babe,” she says and flips her hair behind her one more time before pressing a kiss to his head.
Calum bites his lip when her mouth opens around his dick, then her tongue swirls numerous times around his head before she licks from his base to the tip. She does that three more times and spits on his head, he feels it slide down his shaft before she hollows out her mouth and takes him in her mouth.
“Oh,” he breathes at the sensation of her mouth taking him in. He watches her curve her body as she continues to suck him off, her nose tapping his stomach as she moves up and down and then her hand joins her mouth. She spits some more so he’s slick with her spit, and when she moves up so does her hand and she does that movement faster then slow and fast again.
She removes her mouth for a moment but only to spit on his balls, then she takes him in her mouth again and uses her fingers to fondle his balls.
“Shit,” he hisses bucking his hips up in her mouth. He’s never had a girl gives him a blowjob like this before, this was sensational and he loved watching her do it. The faster she worked her mouth, she raised up on her knees and he could see her breasts move with her motions.
The sight alone would make him come in moments, and on any other given day he would have her keep doing what she was doing because it felt so damn good, but he needed to feel her, he needed to be inside her.
He twisted her hair in his fist and pulled her away from him, her mouth coming off his dick with a pop. Her cheeks were flushed and her lips were swollen and she looked so pretty.
“You’re amazing, babe, but I wouldn’t last much longer.”
“That’s okay,” she pants.
“I want to make you come again,” he grins flipping her over onto her back. She adjusts herself so her head is on the pillows and he reaches across the bed to rifle through his wallet trying to find a condom. “Dammit!”
“If you can’t find one,” she says turning his face to hers, his lips plump and so inviting. “I’m on the pill, have been for years.”
His eyes flash at her statement and he tosses his wallet against the wall, making a loud smack. Holly giggles and opens her legs wide for him, he settles in between her, rubbing up and down her entrance. He sticks his tip in and slowly enters her inch by inch until he finally bottoms out and when he does her mouth opens up in pleasure, her nails digging into his biceps.
They both sigh when they’re finally connected and he rocks his hips slowly, his hands on either side of her head so he can use them as leverage. He finds a perfect rhythm because she’s moaning with each thrust he does and he relishes in the feeling of her clenching her walls around him.
“Faster,” she whispers and Calum complies.
He slides his knees wide so he can fuck her faster and harder, their skin slapping against each other, his balls smacking against her. Her moans become more consistent and he attaches his mouth to hers.
“Feels so good,” she pants with each thrust and moans are spilling from her lips. “Mm, right there, Cal, yeah, yeah, yeah!” her voice becomes higher and higher and Calum pounds into her harder and harder. Her arm wraps around his neck as she comes for him again and she kisses him.
They’re both panting and then she sucks on his tongue and Calum is nearing his own orgasm and he pumps into her faster and she’s moaning his name loudly, her walls clenching around him again.
“You feel so good,” he groans slipping his arms behind her back and she presses her body to his until they’re flush.
“Come for me, Cal,” she breathes in his ear, her fingers pulling on his hair. He moves faster at her words and she keeps encouraging him. “Mm, yeah, just like that, come for me, baby.”
His thighs clench and he pulls out just before he releases his load onto her stomach, she kisses his neck whispering sweet praises on his skin as he lets go breathlessly. He collapses onto her, their breathing labored, hearts hammering fast and their bodies are sticky with sweat. Calum lifts his head from her shoulder to look at her, her eyes are wild and electric and she smiles at him with that smile of hers and he kisses her sweetly. He doesn’t rush this kiss, he enjoys it.
“That was . . . wow,” she laughs peeling his dark curls from his forehead.
“Double wow,” he agrees. He lets out a big sigh then clambers off her.
“Where are you going?” she demands.
“Getting a towel,” he chortles flicking on the bathroom light.
Holly collapses in a worn out pile of limbs when he returns. She leans up on her elbows reaching for the towel but he surprises her and wipes up his mess. She didn’t realize how much he released and he gave her half a smile.
“Sorry about that,” he murmurs.
“You’ve got nothing to apologize for, darlin’,” she reiterates his words from before and they both laugh. He tosses the towel in the garbage bin near the dresser and pulls on his boxers, crawling back onto the bed next to her but it’s her turn to slide off the bed.
“Where are you going?” he demands
“Bathroom, it’s a rule of thumb that I always do after sex,” she shrugs but he notices her legs are wobbling slightly. He smiles at that and she closes the bathroom door.
He springs off his bed turning on the bedside light to try and find her a t-shirt of his she can wear and he picks out a black Guns ‘n Roses shirt. Then he pulls open the drawer where she placed her underwear (he accidentally found it while he was looking for his socks) and picked out a cute pair that had little ladybugs on them.
The bathroom door opened and she came out looking radiant, her face has that after-sex glow and it makes Calum happy.
“I uh, thought you’d want clean clothes,” he holds up the shirt and underwear for her.
“Thank you,” she says softly taking them from his hands. She steps into the underwear and pulls the shirt over her head, pulling her blond hair out from the collar.
“Come on,” he takes her hand leading her back to his bed. They crawl under the covers and he flips off the light but he’s not the least bit tired. Holly rolls over resting her head on his chest, his arm wraps around her and he breathes in her hair.
“This is all real, right? This isn’t just a really good dream I’m having?” she asks and Calum can’t help but laugh.
“It’s very real,” he states and tickles her arm.
“So, what do we do now?” she asks slowly.
“Well, we can lay here and talk until we fall asleep. Then in the morning we’ll go get Kai from Ash’s room and the three of us will go get gelato.”
“And act like this didn’t happen?” she asks quietly.
“Of course not! Why would we do that?”
“Because I work for you, I’m your son’s nanny, it’s not ideal and—“
“Holly, let me tell you something,” he interrupts her loudly. “After Jane I thought love was a waste of time, all it caused was heartbreak. I didn’t find a point in trying anymore but then you came into my life, and not just mine, but Kai’s life and it’s like you’re the puzzle piece I didn’t even know I was looking for. I care about you a lot, Holly, and what we just did, I don’t want it to be a one time thing.”
She’s silent for a moment and Calum thinks she’s gone to sleep or thinking about what to say when she sniffles.
“Are you crying?!”
“I’m sorry,” she laughs and sniffles again. “No one’s said anything like that about me before. I feel the same way. I know it’s only been a few months but I’ve got strong feelings for you as well. I’m so comfortable with you, and I love Kai to pieces. I’ve been hurt in the past as well, but I’m glad because it brought me to you.”
Calum reaches for her in the dark and finds her lips with his own. He kisses her tenderly, fingers in her hair and she lays on her back so he can hover over her. With both of their confessions still hanging in the air, the atmosphere changes and the way their bodies are pressed together and with her sucking on his tongue again—he really loved that—their clothes were removed again.
This time, it wasn’t an animalistic need, it was filled with soft touches and a gentle roll of his hips into hers. When she came undone she bit hard into his shoulder to keep from crying out but it didn’t muffle the sound at all. He loved the way she vocalized how he made her feel.
Her moans were music to his ears, and with her palms on his lower back as he thrusted into her, he felt euphoric. Holly’s so different from other women he’s been with, he’s never had sex twice in the same night before but he thinks he’ll be able to do things with Holly he never thought possible before.
When he orgasmed again she kissed his moans as he filled her up. He was so overcome with emotion he forgot to pull out, but he wasn’t worried. If something were to happen, he knew he and Holly would be in it together.
She held his face in her hands and kissed across his forehead, on his eyebrows, his nose and his cheeks before pecking his lips softly.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” she whispers.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” he agrees pulling her into his chest. They lay there for a few moments counting each other’s breaths and then she shifts. “Bathroom?” he asks.
“Bathroom,” she sighs slipping off the bed and heading into the bathroom again. “Where’s my shirt and underwear?” she asks fumbling around in the dark.
“Forget about them, just come back to bed,” he replies.
She falls over him, her naked body making his react to her and he groans at the contact.
“You’re killin’ me, sweetheart,” he sighs.
“Sorry,” she giggles and begins to play with his hair.
“This is probably the only time we’ll be without Kai for the next six months, so I should enjoy this. You and all your naked glory.”
“Me? Have you seen you? You’re the glorious one.” Then she yawns loudly.
“Go to sleep, sweetheart,” he hums.
They fall asleep in each other’s arms, and even in the midst of their sleep when they pull and turn away, a hand is either on her hip or holding his shoulder. It’s the best sleep either of them has had in a long while.

Summary: What’s better than your best girl and best mate getting along? Well, nothing really. If you knew the rumors were false, that is.
A/N: You’ve heard of enemies to lovers. You’ve heard of fake-dating to real dating. Might I introduce a new trope called hostility turned platonic friendship turned back-up boyfriend? Idea courtesy of @here-for-the-uproars.
Content: Swearing, general tom-foolery
Word Count: Honestly? This got hella long and I’m still not done so it’s a mini-series now.
DISCLAIMER: NOT A poly!Cashton fic!!!!
And away, and away we go!
Part 1
Sam Hudson quirked an eyebrow as she pulled into Ashton’s driveway and spotted Calum’s Range Rover. Did Ashton forget they had made plans again? He was forgetful like that, she had come to learn in their three month relationship. It wasn’t that he did it on purpose. He just had so many things going on that it was hard for him to keep it all straight. She had suggested him getting a calendar, a joke he hadn’t appreciated.
“It was a joke, Fletch, chill.”
“Well it makes me feel like a bad boyfriend, alright? I’m not doing it on purpose,” he shot back, his normally light hazel eyes darkening.
“You’re not a bad anything,” she assured him, keeping her voice calm and light. “It was a mix up. They happen. I’m not gonna get mad if you hang out with your friends instead of me.”
“Really?” he asked, bewilderment replacing the anger at the ill-timed joke.
“Really,” she nodded. “I mean, don’t make it like a habit or anything. But shit happens. I’m a big girl. I can handle a canceled plan every now and then.”
She got out of her car and walked up the drive to the door, wondering if this was going to be a case of canceled plans. It was only lunch, so it wasn’t like it was a big deal. But, she’d be lying if she said her heart didn’t sink a little when he had to cancel on her. She would have liked to be asked to tag along with Ashton and his friends. They were important to him, and he was important to her, so she wanted to get along with them.
“Oh, here’s the princess, now!” Calum’s angry voice sneered as she walked into the house and found the two men glaring at each other.
She opened her mouth, preparing to fight back against the unwarranted attack. She wasn’t a princess. She encouraged Ashton frequently to drop his plans with her in favor of his friends. The harsh words died in her throat though as she caught a glimpse of the man’s brown eyes. They were hard, yes, but they were also glossy with unshed tears. Calum Hood wasn’t angry. He was hurt. He wouldn’t dare admit it, but Calum was sensitive about getting pushed to the sidelines every time his band mates dated someone new. It wasn’t that he was jealous necessarily. He just hated feeling alone.
Well, if Sam wasn’t going to defend herself, Ashton sure as hell was. “Don’t speak to her like that!” Ashton snapped. “I already apologized, Cal! What more do you want?!”
“For you to stop ditching me for a girl that’s not gonna matter in a few months! I’m your brother, Ashton!” Calum shouted. His lip quivered, but his voice remained steady. He wasn’t going to give Ashton the satisfaction of coming off as weak.
“I’m not ditching you!” Ashton yelled back, his hands pulling at his brown curls in his frustration, ignoring the second dig at his girlfriend’s expense.
“Whoa, how about we all just calm down for a sec,” Sam suggested, the therapist-in-training coming out.
“Shut up, princess!”
“Stay out of this, baby!”
This time, Sam fought back. Nobody told her what to do. “Fuck you! Sit down!” Her sharp tone was enough for both men to snap their heads in her direction. “Now!” she ordered, pointing to the couch.
Both men huffed, but did as they were told, looking like toddlers who just got sent to time-out. “Now, what the fuck is going on?”
“Ash and I had plans,” Calum practically spat at her.
“Okay, is it like an actual thing? Or is it something easily rescheduled?” Sam said, her voice dropping to a calm and light tone.
“Why does that matter?” Calum asked, his tone still harsh but calming down.
“Because Fletch and I were just going to get lunch. We can do that anytime. You can even come with us if you want. But if you guys had like time-sensitive plans, go do that.”
Calum blinked, not sure what to say. He wasn’t sure if he liked the idea of getting lunch with Ashton and the princess. But it was getting hard to hate her when she was willing to give up her own plans so he could have Ashton to himself. “We have tickets for the new Star Wars movie. It’s at 2,” he finally told her.
She glanced at her phone, noting the time. “Do you wanna grab lunch with us then, and then you guys can go see the movie?” she suggested. “If you’re hungry, that is.”
Calum shrugged. “I could eat, I guess. Do you like Star Wars?”
“I love Star Wars.”
“Have you seen the new movie?”
“Not yet.”
“Do you… I mean since I’m kinda crashing your lunch date…” A brown hand passed through his dark hair, too embarrassed to actually apologize, too uncertain of the college grad student one year his senior to properly finish his suggested compromise.
“Fletch?” Sam asked, quirking at eyebrow at the other man who was still pouting like a toddler in time-out.
The large tattooed arms uncrossed themselves and Ashton allowed himself a hopeful look. “Yeah? You guys don’t mind the other crashing in on our plans?”
Calum and Sam shook their heads. Then, Sam was beckoning for them both, “Well, c’mon then. Fletch you’re driving. Cal, you can have shotgun if you want.”
Calum shook his head as he and Ashton stood up, “S’alright, you take it.”
“Thank you, baby,” Ashton whispered, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “I’m sorry I keep doing this. I’ll make it up to you, okay?”
Sam shook her head. “There’s no need, Fletch. You can pick us both sometimes, you know?”
Ashton chuckled and pulled her tighter, a kiss finding its way into her hair. “We’ll see how this goes first.”
~~~
“Sorry,” Calum said so fast and low when Ashton got up from the table that Sam wasn’t sure she had heard him.
“Come again?” she asked, tilting her head to the side.
“I said I was sorry,” Calum mumbled a little louder. “I just… Ash and I are the closest. We’re the ones who are usually single. So when… I’m sorry.”
Sam smiled and reached to grab his hands in hers. “Cal, I’m never going to take him away from you or his friends.”
His hands pulled out of hers, but his brown eyes didn’t harden. Skeptical, but not hostile. “Why? All his exes did.”
“Because I’m not his exes,” Sam said with a small laugh. “Cal, I’m not the jealous type. I know I’m the outsider in this equation. But, this might go a whole lot more smoothly if we could be friends ourselves?”
“You wanna be friends with me?”
Sam nodded. “I really do.”
“Even though I said some pretty awful shit about you?”
“It’s probably nothing I haven’t heard before,” Sam shrugged. She was willing to move forward if he was.
He nodded his head slowly. “Fuck, I really am sorry.”
“No apologies necessary.”
Ashton smiled to himself, listening to their conversation, staying just out of eyesight. “Hey, you guys almost ready to go?”
“Yeah,” Sam said, “You guys can go ahead and get seats, I’m just waiting on the check.”
“Oh, baby, I was gonna pay,” Ashton told her.
“Yeah, I got mine,” Calum added, digging into his pockets for his wallet.
The check came, but Sam snatched it before the other two could do anything about it. “No way. You guys get snacks. I’ll get lunch.” Then, her card was in the tray and the tray was back in the waitress’ hands.
“You want snacks? Baby, we just ate.”
“You can’t go to the movies and not get snacks, Fletch.”
Calum chuckled. “She’s got a point, mate.”
“Ooo! Selfie!” Sam decided, pulling out her phone. “Here, Cal, get on the other side of me.”
“What?” Calum chuckled again, but moved anyway.
“Documenting a day with my boys,” she explained, holding out her phone and taking a few pictures. “We’ll look later and you can help me decide the best one to post.”
“Is she always like this?” Calum joked to Ashton.
“Pretty much,” Ashton told him with a laugh.
~~~
Calum and Sam became fast friends after that. Any time Ashton got forgetful with plans, rather than canceling, Sam would encourage Calum to join them, taking turns in doing whatever was originally planned, but more often than not doing both plans. It actually went smoother than expected because Calum acted as a buffer to the paparazzi, keeping them from getting too many shots of Ashton’s grabby hands on Sam’s ass. Soon, plans were made that included all three of them as often as possible.
“Whatcha think of this color?” Calum asked Sam one day as they lounged around Ashton’s.
Sam moved from where she was in Ashton’s lap to peer over the other man’s shoulder. “For what?”
“My hair. Getting bored of this,” he said, giving his hair a tug.
She pursed her lips in thought, running her fingers through his dark hair. “Yeah, it would look good. Be cooler in mine though.”
Calum pulled back to look at Sam’s hair. “Yeah? Wanna go with me then?”
“Ooo, can we get our nails done after?”
“It’s a date.”
“Whoa,” Ashton butted in. “You can’t just take my girlfriend out on a date.”
Sam laughed. “Do you wanna come with?”
“How did I end up being the third wheel in my own relationship?”
“Nobody’s a third wheel,” Sam laughed again. “I’m just going out with my friend.”
“Oh, so you’re friends now?” Ashton joked. He knew the two were becoming fast friends, even if they hadn’t hung out yet without him.
“Best friends. Step aside Cashton fans, it’s all about Hoodson now.”
Ashton rolled his eyes playfully, before he was pulling Sam back across the couch to him. “Better remember who’s girlfriend you really are, baby.”
“Wow, I haven’t even gone on the date yet. Hey, Cal, can we make dates more often? I like this side of your friend.”
Calum chuckled. “Luke and I used to get our nails done once a month. That sound good?”
“Oh, so I’m your backup Luke? Wow, I thought what we had was special,” she pouted with fake dramatic flair.
Calum chuckled again. “You in or not?”
“Oh, totally,” Sam agreed, her tone back to normal. “Well maybe less frequent?” Sam suggested as she began really thinking about it. “Shit’s gonna get expensive quick.” Sam didn’t make a lot of money as she was paying her way through grad school. Even a simple monthly expense needed to be budgeted appropriately. A manicure was a full tank of gas or textbook for class.
“Oh, my princess doesn’t pay on our dates.”
“Your princess?” both Ashton and Sam asked with raised eyebrows.
“Too far?” Calum asked with a small uncomfortable laugh.
Sam leaned back across the couch and placed a kiss on Calum’s cheek. “Nah, it’s really sweet, Cal. Just tell me when and I’ll be there.”
~~~
“Hey, Calum!” the paparazzi yelled and Calum instinctively pulled Sam closer to him. “Isn’t Sam Ashton’s girlfriend?”
“Just ignore them,” Calum whispered in Sam’s ear.
“You should say that to yourself,” Sam whispered back, feeling how tense Calum was as he continued them on their path to the car.
“Sam! Sam, where’s Ashton?”
Sam rolled her eyes and hid deeper into Calum. At seven months of dating Ashton, she wasn’t sure she would ever get used to the paparazzi.
“From Hudwin to Hoodson!” the web story read on Ashton’s phone as he heard the door open and Calum and Sam laughing.
“You could be a tad more careful, Cal,” Ashton said, showing the duo his phone.
Sam took the phone, gave it a glance, and frowned. “Wow, people are really stupid, huh? What? A girl can’t go get her nails done with her friend anymore?”
“Maybe I should just go with you guys from now on.”
“Aw,” both Calum and Sam pouted.
“What? I like getting my nails done too.”
“Yeah, but it’s kinda our thing, Fletch.”
“You’ve gone three times, how is it already a thing?”
Sam shrugged. “It just is, Fletch.”
Ashton fake-pouted. He actually really liked that Calum and Sam’s friendship was developing to them feeling comfortable doing things without him. It was a lot easier to balance his friendships and relationship when Sam was becoming friends with his friend group.
“Aw, Fletch,” Sam giggled, walking over to Ashton and wrapping her arms around his neck. “If you wanna come with us, we’re dying our hair blue on Saturday.”
“Blue hair, huh?” Ashton asked, pulling a strand of her hair, picturing how it’d look blue. “That’s kinda hot, baby.”
Calum cleared his throat, “Still here, mate.”
“Cal?” Sam spoke up, while her ocean eyes locked on Ashton’s honey ones.
“Yeah, princess?”
“Thanks for the date. Run along now.”
Calum scoffed playfully. “I do all the work and he gets all the reward, huh?”
Sam turned real quick and pressed her lips against Calum’s cheek. “I know you’re joking, but yes.”
Calum laughed. “Have fun you guys. See you Saturday for our date, princess.”
“See ya,” Sam answered, already turning back to Ashton.
Ashton waited for the door to click shut before he was hoisting Sam up in his arms, lips attacking her neck. “Did you have fun with Cal, baby?” he asked between kisses.
“Mhm,” she answered, throwing her head back. “Missed you though.”
He lifted his head up and back just enough to give her a dangerous look. “Damn straight you did.”
“Aw, is someone jealous?” Sam teased.
The dangerous expression softened. “No, baby. I’m glad you and Cal get along and can hang out without me.”
“Promise?” Sam asked, dropping the playful act herself. They both knew the tabloid rumors would only worsen the more she hung out with Calum alone.
“Promise,” Ashton nodded. “I’m secure enough in my relationship with you for you to have guy friends. I’m not actually jealous.”
“Good,” Sam smiled. “Cuz I really like hanging out with Cal.”
“Good. I like it too.”
~~~
“Yes!” Sam cheered as the door shut behind her, waving two tickets in her hand.
“What?” he asked, patting the spot next to him on the couch for her to join him.
“I scored two tickets to Hamilton!” she squealed, bouncing on her toes. “It’s on Saturday,” she added, when she finished her happy dance and sat down next to him.
His hand rubbed at the back of his neck and she held back a disappointed sigh, her grin dropping into a frown. “Musicals aren’t really my thing, baby…” he started.
“You won’t suffer through it with me anyway? It’s Hamilton! Don’t you love me?” she pleaded.
Ashton chuckled. At nearly a year of dating of course he loved her. They both knew that. “You didn’t let me finish, baby. Cal loves musicals. Ask him to go with you.”
She narrowed her eyes at him skeptically. “This is more than just a trip to get our hair or nails done, Fletch.”
“I know. I wouldn’t suggest it if I wasn’t okay with it.”
“I know you’re fine with it. But the paps are gonna have a field day with this. You know that, yeah?”
He shrugged and his eyes danced playfully. “Go to the play with Cal. Have a good time. Let the paps have their fun. And I’ll remind you of who’s girlfriend you are when you get home.”
She wrinkled her nose as her grin returned to her face. “Wanna remind me now?”
After her reminder, Sam set to work. She carefully crafted a Valentine’s Day esque heart card reminiscent of elementary school days. “Will you be my BUB?” Ashton asked, eyeing the design with humor.
“Back-up boyfriend. Since how you don’t love me enough…”
Ashton chuckled at her playful teasing. “It’s just not my thing, baby.”
“I know. It’s fine. But, I gotta get creative. This isn’t just some pretty hair and nails. This is a night out on the town.”
Ashton chuckled again and left her to her devices.
~~~
Calum rapped his knuckles on Ashton’s front door, swallowing how awkward it felt to be knocking on a door he had never once knocked on. When Ashton opened the door and bent over in laughter, Calum could’ve socked him. “Shut up,” Calum muttered instead, pink undertones flushing in his brown cheeks.
“Aw, Cal, you look so handsome, bub,” Sam smiled at Calum, pushing the door open wider for Calum to squeeze by Ashton who had fat tears rolling down his cheeks.
“These are for you,” Calum said quickly, pushing a bouquet of sunflowers into her hand. “Asshole here said they were your favorite.”
“Thanks bub, that was really sweet of you,” Sam said, placing a kiss on Calum’s cheek while nudging Ashton’s ribs with the tip of her shoe. “Stop being a jerk and put these in water for me. And maybe take some notes, yeah? This is how you dress for a date,” she told Ashton, gesturing at Calum in his fitted black slacks, long white-sleeved button down shirt, his hair cleaned up on the sides to contain the unruly curls that he had left wild on the top.
Ashton stood upright with a scoff, “If I dressed like that it wouldn’t last very long because you wouldn’t be able to keep your hands off of me.”
Sam brought a finger to her lips in thought. It already took a surprising about of willpower to keep her hands off of Ashton as was, and she considered herself to be a woman of strong willpower, not easily fazed. But Ashton was… well… you know. “Get cocky, and I’ll go home with Cal,” she warned.
“You wouldn’t…”
Sam shrugged and looped her arm through Calum’s. “I’m a pretty girl in a pretty dress going out with a stunning man.”
“You look fuckin’ gorgeous, princess,” Calum agreed, happy to get back at Ashton for laughing at him.
“Ooo, he has compliments, too. Better step up your game, Fletch.”
Ashton rolled his eyes before giving Sam a deep kiss that made her weak in the knees. “You’ll have a lot more than that waiting for you after your date,” he whispered in her ear as he pulled away, tongue flicking at her ear for added effect.
Sam shuddered, her nails digging into Calum’s shirt. “Ready, bub?” her voice squeaked out.
“Let’s roll, princess.”
“Have fun! Don’t stay out too late, kiddos!” Ashton laughed, making kissy faces at the pair as they walked back out the door towards Calum’s car.
“Oh, thanks, bub!” Sam smiled when Calum got the door for her, closing it gently after she pulled her dress in.
“That’s the fourth time you called me that,” Calum pointed out once he got in the driver’s seat. “Is that my new nickname, now? Short for ‘back-up boyfriend’?”
“It doesn’t have to be. Like if it’s offensive, I can just call you ‘Cal’. I have a skewed sense of humor. I d-” she was rambling, biting at her lip. Shit, was she offending him? You’d think for someone who worked part-time in a therapist office with the goal to have her own practice one day she’d learn to keep her humor in check when it could come across as offensive.
Calum chuckled, gripping her hand in his. “It’s fine, princess,” he winked, kissing the knuckles on her hand before letting go and gripping the steering wheel. “It’ll be our little joke.”
Sam felt the heat rise in her cheeks. “You’re too sweet, bub. How is it that a girl hasn’t snatched you up yet? You dress up. You bring flowers. You get the door. Perfect gentleman.”
Calum shrugged. “Just picky, I guess.”
Sam gave a small shake of her head, letting out an equally small chuckle. “Seriously, like you do this for me and we’re just friends. Can’t imagine the lengths you’d go for a girl you’re actually dating.”
“Be ‘bout the same, honestly. Every girl deserves to be treated like a princess.”
Sam smiled, knowing that was all Joy and Mali’s influence over the man. And maybe a little bit of Ashton because she knew the other man shared the same mentality. “Well, I’m more than happy to play princess to your prince until we find you a queen.”
“And I’ll be your bub whenever,” he promised her back.
~~~
Much like Sam had predicted, the tabloids had a field day with her “date” with Calum, but the three that were actually affected didn’t care in the slightest. Ashton was happy his best mate and best girl got along. Calum was happy he wasn’t being pushed aside. Sam was happy she had someone to do things with when Ashton couldn’t/didn’t want to.
Although that wasn’t to say Calum and Sam’s blossoming platonic relationship didn’t come without its competition. The two men constantly tried to one-up each other, no matter what is was. Sunflowers were always on Ashton’s kitchen table, each bouquet bigger than the last. Bath bombs and candles were also spilling out of the bathroom cabinets because Sam loved a good relaxing bath after a hard week.
“No, you can’t use that one,” Calum said one evening, peering over Ashton’s shoulder as Ashton dug through the bath bombs.
“But it’s cool looking,” Ashton said, admiring the heart shaped bath bomb. It reminded him of Sam.
“No, Sam has her test on emotions and brain waves next week, so that’s for when she passes,” Calum said sternly. “Here,” he said, placing a bath bomb that looked like Earth in Ashton’s hand. “You can use this one. Sam picked it out for you herself.”
“Aw,” Ashton smiled, cradling it to his chest.
“It’s so you can watch the world melt away, Fletch,” Sam called from where she was lounged out in the bed. “Thought it was symbolic. Bub, tell Fletch not to use the glitter ones. I swear I’m still finding that shit everywhere.”
Calum laughed. Sam absolutely despised glitter. “Remind me which ones they are, and I’ll throw them out. I swear they didn’t say they had glitter when I bought them.”
“They don’t say, that’s why you have to look at them carefully, bub. Now, hurry up, I want my cuddles.”
“He’s coming, baby,” Ashton laughed, clapping Calum on the shoulder.
“And Fletch, take your time. I mean, I want your cuddles, too. But enjoy your bath and alone time.”
Ashton chuckled. He loved how receptive she was to his needs and how she didn’t mind when he needed alone time to himself. “You know I enjoy my alone time better when you’re here with me, baby,” he told her. Because even if he liked being alone, he liked knowing she was close by even more.
“I know. That’s why I’ll be right here with bub when you’re ready. We’ll get the bed nice and toasty for ya.”
“You’re the best baby. I love you.”
“I love you, too. Now get in that bath and give me back my bubs.”
Of course Ashton frequently came out as the winner of the competition as he could “appreciate” Sam in ways Calum wouldn’t, but Ashton also won permanently when at a year and a half of dating, he asked Sam to move in with him. While the playful competition wasn’t what Sam expected, she’d be lying if she said she didn’t like that both men were so attentive to her. It was the best of both worlds: a best friendship with her boyfriend’s best friend. It wasn’t often these days that Sam was seen without one of them. What Sam never saw coming though was the competition between Calum and Luke, and by default Luke and Mike.
“You picked Cal over me to be your bub?!” Luke pouted in outrage one night after the group of friends had all laughed their way through yet another tabloid spinning Hoodson out of proportion. “I’m a great boyfriend! Right, Si?”
Sam laughed from where she was sitting on the floor with Mike, D&D books, character sheets, and dice spread out between them as they prepped for the group’s weekly game night. “It’s not like that, Luke. Cal and I just click.”
“Okay, but like hierarchy. Ash doesn’t want to take you to whatever. Cal’s busy. Who do you call? Me or Mike?”
“Um…” Sam faltered.
“What?!” Luke’s arms flew upwards as he got up on his feet.
“It depends,” Sam laughed again. “Like obviously Ash is always gonna be my first pick. Then, Cal only because we’ve done so much together at this point. You and Mikey are tied for third.”
“What if it’s nerd related?” Mike joked.
“Oh, I’d pick you, hands down.”
“What?!” Luke repeated, hands in his blonde curls.
Sam shrugged. “We just don’t have a thing, Luke. Like if I ever get the urge to buy some sparkly boots, I’ll give you a call, yeah?”
“Name a thing,” Luke said quickly. “Anything. Name it and it’s yours.”
Sam was too caught up in trying not to laugh at Luke’s competitive nature that she blurted the first thing that came to her mind. “Piggy!”
“My dog?! You want my dog?!”
Sam nodded.
“Deal!”
“What?!” everybody else screeched as the blue-eyed duo shook hands. “No, nuh-uh,” Ashton put in. “Baby, no. Give Luke his dog back. Why’d you even say that? Why’d you say yes?!”
“I panicked!” Sam laughed.
“I want to be included! Look at her over there with Mike.”
Sam laughed harder. “Luke, I got tickets to Mean Girls for next week through school. You wanna come with me?”
“Whoa, you’re not even gonna ask me first?” both Ashton and Calum asked her.
“Yeah, like you’re gonna go see a play with her,” Calum scoffed. “I was the one who took her to Little Shop of Horrors last month, remember? You would've liked that one, too.”
“I took her twice!” Ashton defended.
“SAM!” both men whirled to look at her.
Sam gave both men a sheepish look. “What? I really like that one.”
Both men rolled their eyes. Then, Calum told Luke, “She likes sunflowers and licorice. And no, she won’t share the licorice either. Damn near broke my hand when I tried to take a piece that I fuckin’ paid for!”
Sam laughed, “I wasn’t gonna break your hand. And you know I don’t share my snacks.”
“It’s true,” Ashton nodded. Then, “What’s with the licorice addiction, anyway? You used to always get popcorn. But now every time we go to the movies you grab licorice, and then eat the entire box before the movie even starts.”
“Musical theaters don’t sell popcorn,” Calum explained. “And yeah she’ll eat half before the show and devour the rest during intermission.”
“It’s cuz-”
“You can’t eat when the show’s actually on because it’s distracting. Yeah, we know,” both men interrupted.
“Aw, my boys know me so well,” Sam smiled the brown-haired set of men.
“And you gotta dress up,” they continued, prepping Luke to take Sam to the play.
Sierra laughed, nudging Sam, “Just taking all our men, huh?”
“Oh, I’ll take you and Crys, too,” Sam laughed with her, laying back across the living room floor, stretching her arms wide. “I will take all the pampering! Fight for me, hoes!”
Later that night, Ashton seemed to hold Sam extra close to him. “You okay?” she asked, rolling in his arms so she could study his face.
“Yeah, baby,” he murmured, tilting his head forward to kiss her forehead.
“You sure? You seem… and it’s not a bad thing! You just seem more affectionate tonight.”
“What? I can’t love my girlfriend?”
She tugged gently at his hair. “I didn’t say that. I just want to check in with you. Like I know Cal and I have become really close. And I know I’m starting to get close with Luke and Mike now to-“
“Baby, stop,” Ashton interrupted. “You do this every time and I don’t know why. I love that your making your own friendships with my guys. No girl I’ve ever dated has tried to be their friend as hard as you have. Like yeah, they’ve gotten along, did the pleasant niceties and what have you. But they never treated them as their own friends like you have.”
“Fletch, the guys are important to you. And you’re important to me. Which means they’re important to me. But, please, if I ever go too far, set those boundaries. I mean, I’m not gonna go sleeping with your friends or anything crazy like that. But they’re your friends first and foremost. I’m just your girlfriend.”
Ashton chuckled. “Baby, I’m never gonna be threatened by a relationship you have with my friends. Or anybody for that matter. You’ve never give me shit for my friendships with other girls. I’m not gonna give you shit for your friendships with other dudes. I know you love me.”
“Then why are you extra affectionate tonight?” she pressed, her heart soaring at his words, but not totally convinced that he was convinced this was fine.
“Because maybe seeing you interact with them makes me a little jealous. But, baby it’s playful, I promise. If anything it’s just a reminder of how grateful I am that at the end of the day I’m the one you come home to.”
“You’re the only one I want to come home to,” she said, nuzzling her face in his neck.
Ashton’s chest rumbled with his laughter. “You’d think for a therapist you’d be a little quicker on grasping the concept of what a healthy relationship looks like.”
“I’m not a therapist yet,” she mumbled, placing kisses on his neck and working her way up his jaw.
“You will be,” he said, catching her lips with his. “You’re the smartest woman I know, and I am damn lucky you call me your boyfriend.”
“It helps that you’re pretty,” she giggled.

           Six months, that’s how long it’s been since Oliver’s mom disappeared, which was only days after he was born. Ashton hadn’t suspected anything was off until one day he woke up to Oliver’s cries only to find that all of her things were gone, and a note saying she would not be returning, and she regretted ever having Oliver. Ashton’s heart shattered, not for himself, but for the little bundle of joy she left behind. The only thing that’s been keeping Ashton from completely failing at raising a little boy by himself was his next door neighbor. Ashton had known her since he had moved in years ago. The first time he ever saw her, he was moving something in from the car, and she was walking her dog. When he introduced himself, she smiled widely and introduced herself, then her boyfriend who came up behind her shortly after. It became routine, she walked her dog every day at the same time, so Ashton would make sure to stop and say hi to her when she passed by, even though Oliver’s mom was not a fan of this routine. Right before Oliver was born, she had told Ashton about her ugly break up, and he could feel his heart break for her, it was then that he realized he had a bit of a crush on her, but it was nothing more than that, a crush.
           The day Ashton found that Oliver’s mom had left, he picked Oliver up out of the crib and immediately ran next door. When she opened the door, she was rubbing the sleep out of her eyes, confused about who would be knocking on her door this early in the morning. When she saw the disheveled look on Ashton’s face, her eyes opened wide and immediately ushered him and the baby inside. “She’s gone.” He said, cradling the back of Oliver’s head. “I don’t know how to raise a baby by myself.” Ashton started to cry, which made her reach her hands towards his face in attempt to calm him. As her fingers traced over his stubble to his jaw line, his anxiety completely washed away, and his heart slowed. She didn’t say anything as she held out her hands offering to take Oliver from him. Although Ashton was confused, he carefully handed her the newborn, dropping his hands to his side. She immediately started bouncing him and cooing at him, while stepping into the her living room. Ashton stood in place, running his hand through his messy hair, until she looked back at him.
           Ashton walked over to her, Oliver now soundly asleep in her arms. She ran a finger gently down his soft cheek as Ashton’s mouth fell open in bewilderment. “I helped my mom raise my baby sister.” She said, a soft smile pressing against her lips as her eyes stayed locked on the little boy in her arms. “I was sixteen when she was born, and my dad always seemed to resent my baby sister, so I had to step in whenever I could.” She managed to pull her eyes away from the beautiful boy and look at Ashton. Her eyes met his and she immediately saw the resemblance, causing her to smile widely as she continued to sway with Oliver, “I’ve learned some other helpful things from coworkers and friends, so if you need help, I’m here for you.” Her eyes twinkling in the low light. Ashton had wanted to kiss her then, but he wasn’t sure if it was because he knew he wasn’t going to have to raise Oliver by himself, or because she looked incredibly attractive holding his son. Whatever the reason, he refrained and sighed in relief, thanking her for being so kind.
           Ever since that day, she and Ashton developed a new routine. She would wake up extra early to get ready for work so that she could stop by his house and ask if he needed anything before she headed off. Even though most days Ashton said yes, he mostly said yes so that he could see her. Only a few times has it been because he actually needed help. Every morning she would leave at exactly six, never later, never earlier. Ashton would smile at her as she walked out the door, knowing he would see her in the evening. Each evening, after work, she would stop by with things to make dinner, or carry out. She would cook while Ashton made Oliver’s formula, or caught up on his own work. They would all eat together, Ashton would sit across from her and admire how she interacted with his son. He couldn’t help that he was quickly falling in love with her. After dinner, she would help Ashton get Oliver to sleep, and then offer to help him clean everything up. She always hoped he would say yes so she could spend time alone with him, but he always smiled a soft smile and said no. She then would return the smile, kiss him on the cheek and walk home; every single day.
           Today was different though, it was Saturday, the day she always took to catch up on her own self. She would call her mother, and every time she would talk about Ashton and Oliver, she would look out her window and hope she could see him, her head ducking every time she failed to see him. It was around six in the evening when she hung up with her mother and there was a knock on her door.  With her eyebrows furrowed, she opened the door, finding Ashton on the other side. Her eyebrows raised completely seeing him standing there showered, clean shaven and dressed in a black t-shirt, black jeans and a leather jacket. His hair slicked back into a pompadour style. Ashton cleared his throat and smiled, fidgeting with his phone while he spoke. “I’m sorry, I know you usually take Saturdays to yourself, but I was wondering if you had some time to come over real fast and help me out with something?” He noticed he was fidgeting with his phone, so he shoved it in his pocket and shifted his weight, leaning an arm against her door frame. Although she hesitated, she agreed and turned to change into something a little more appropriate than sweatpants.
           As they walked down the hill towards Ashton’s house, she had her arms crossed over her chest. Ashton’s hands were shoved in his pockets and there was a soft smirk sitting on his lips. She was confused, but she followed him inside anyway. When they got inside, the lights were turned down so they were just barely lit, Ashton smiled at her and walked toward the kitchen without a word. She followed behind him, still confused on what was happening. As she crossed into the kitchen she saw the table was set, a candle in the middle of the table lit. Ashton pulled out one of the chairs and motioned for her to sit down. Without uncrossing her arms, she moved towards the seat. As Ashton pushed her chair in, she looked at him and asked where Oliver was. After Ashton sat down and pulled his chair towards the table, he cleared his throat. “Luke and Sierra have been begging to babysit, so they have him for the night.” Ashton smiled and began pouring wine into the glasses in front of them.
           She blinked a few times and looked down at herself, suddenly feeling completely underdressed. Her tongue ran over her lips as the nervousness crept through her entire body. Her arms finally uncrossing and her hands landed in her lap, she leaned forward, “Are we on a date right now?” She asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Ashton laughed, and raised a single eyebrow. She sat back and ran a hand through her hair, it’s not that she didn’t want to go on a date with him, she just expected it to be a bit different than this. “I wish you would’ve told me, I look awful.” Her eyes dropped to her hands and she absently played with her fingers, her appetite suddenly fading.
           Ashton stopped pouring the wine and pulled his eyebrows together, “I think you look just fine.” He set the bottle down and watched her.
           She rolled her eyes and then scoffed, “’Fine,’ you say.” She leaned forward, her eyes locking with his, “Every time I’ve thought about a date with you, I’ve looked so good that you can’t keep your hands off me.” It was word vomit, and she knew it, and it was definitely not something she wanted Ashton to hear. As her face flushed a bright red, Ashton raised his eyebrows. Her eyes closed and her lips pulled into her mouth. All she could think about was running, but instead she placed a hand on her forehead and tried to hide herself.
           Ashton let out a laugh and sat back, licking his lips, “You’ve thought about that?”
           “Oh god,” she let out a laugh and completely covered her face, not being able to contain her laughter.
           Ashton laughed harder, not able to help himself. He collected himself and reached across the table, silently asking for her hand, “I’m kidding, will you please grab my hand?” She dropped her hands, exposing her bright red cheeks. Reluctantly, she placed her hand in his and the atmosphere suddenly grew thicker. Ashton ran his thumb across the back of her hand as the red slowly started to fade from her cheeks. “I’ve had this little crush on you for about six months,” he explained, locking his eyes with hers, “Seeing the way you take care of Oliver, it just makes my heart so warm. I’ve wanted to take you on a real date for a while, but I can’t ever seem to find the right time, so this is what I came up with, I hope this is alright.” His eyes sparkled in the candle light, and her stomach flipped. Not only was it alright, it was perfect.

Flashing lights. Again and again. Blurry reflections in a mirror. A sky full of stars. And a loud, alarming sound, piercing through Michael’s ears.
He woke up, sweating and out of breath. A nightmare. Still lying on Luke’s red couch, Michael squinted his eyes, as the light coming from a television screen flickered in the room. Noticing the blanket on his couch suddenly moved, Luke, who had taken one of his kitchen chairs and had put it next to Michael to wait for him to wake up, jumped. He had decided to watch TV on mute to let his guest sleep, but apparently the screen alone woke Michael up.
“Hey” Luke said softly. Michael rubbed his eyes and saw Luke sitting there, next to him. He sat up, the memories of what happened (his injured hand and his panic attack, but most importantly, the fact he still wasn’t aware of where he actually was) coming back to him.
“Hi” Michael yawned. “For how long was I asleep?”
“You have been sleeping all day. It’s around 8pm now, I think.”
Michael noticed how Luke awkwardly looked at his own hands and touched his rings, the one golden ring on his middle finger shimmering as he turned it around, reflecting the white light of the TV screen.
“You had a nightmare, didn’t you? I heard you talk in your sleep.” Luke said, still not looking up.
Michael blushed, thinking about what kind of things he could’ve said in his sleep. His nightmare was still blurry in his mind, and he was unsure of what he actually had had a dream about.
“What did I say?” He asked shyly to Luke who was now absent-mindedly staring at the screen.
“Something about... Home and...” Luke hesitated. “You were... I don’t know, it sounded like someone was hurting you.”
Suddenly feeling the dryness in his mouth, Michael tried to swallow and, as he looked down, noticed his hand didn’t hurt that much anymore. They stayed silent for a while in Luke’s living room. Michael hated nightmares. He wanted to forget, but he couldn’t, even though it was all a blur, there was something he couldn’t put his finger on.
It was dark outside. Their eyes met, both wanting to say something, but not knowing what, or how. As Michael brought his hand to his eyes to get a closer look to his wounds, he was still wearing his striped sweater, and the blood stains had turned brown on his right sleeve.
“Maybe you’d like to change?” Luke said with a raspy voice, suddenly breaking the silence. “You can borrow one of my sweaters if you want, and I’ll wash yours.”
“That’s so nice of you...” Michael whispered, but Luke had already gone up to go get one of his sweaters from his closet, in the hallway. He came back and handed a light grey hoodie to Michael, who looked at him with a surprised expression. They stared at each other awkwardly, Michael waiting for Luke to leave the room so he could change, and Luke waiting for Michael to give him his dirty sweater.
“Maybe...”
“It’s probably...”
They stopped, interrupting each other. Michael felt his cheeks heat up.
“I’ll let you change and you’ll give me your sweater later, okay?” Luke said with a grin.
Michael nodded as Luke left the room and closed the door. He sighed, exhausted, even though he had been asleep all day, and took off his sweater. His gaze fell on his own reflection in the mirror which was standing against the wall in the corner of the room, and he immedialty noticed the bruises. Dark, big bruises all over his chest. Michael gasped, bringing his bandaged hand to the purple, black-ish skin, brushing his fingers against his sensitive skin. What had happened to him? To his body? He looked at his face in the mirror. He had bags under his green eyes, his tousled blonde hair falling on his forehead. Once again, confusion and panic started to make Michael feel dizzy, his vision went blurry from the tears starting to form in his already red eyes as he suddenly heard Luke’s voice from the kitchen.
“Are you alright in there? Do you need help?”
“I-I’m fine” Michael stuttered, holding his breath. He didn’t want Luke to see his bruises, he’d only ask more questions. “I’ll give you my sweater in a second.”
He grabbed Luke’s soft sweater, which smelled of fresh laundry, like a cherry blossom garden bathed in sunlight. Michael brought the fabric to his face and breathed in deeply ; the smell calmed him down. Before pulling the sweater over his head, something else caught his eye in the mirror. On his arm, he had his black armband tattoos, the ones he remembered. But in between them, there was something else. Another tattoo, one he didn’t remember getting. A weird black, spiky symbol joining both of his armbands on his elbow. Taking one step closer to the mirror, Michael noticed how his skin, close to the black edges, was red, as if the tattoo artist’s needle had just pierced through it. A fresh, new tattoo he knew nothing about.
“What the fuck... What the fuck!” Michael let out uncontrollably.
“Are you okay? Michael?”
Michael heard Luke rushing in, not minding his guest’s privacy. His vision was foggy due to his teary eyes. His breath was starting to get heavier, faster. He couldn’t take his eyes off of his arm. What did all of this mean?
“Oh my god! What happened to your chest! Are you in pain?” Luke gasped loudly as he saw Michael in the mirror. “You just got a tattoo? That looks nice. Super cool. The bruises aren’t that cool though.”
Michael turned around to face the blonde boy. Luke was unbelievable; hadn’t he understood Michael still didn’t have the answers to all of his questions? But the boy’s kindness stopped Michael from saying anything. He was thankful for Luke’s help and tried to stay calm. Without Luke, he would probably be wounded, alone and even more lost. But at that moment, he only felt embarrassed as Luke had only known him for less than 24 hours, and already seen him bare chest.
“It’s alright, I’m not in pain.” Michael lied. He could every single one of his heartbeats hurt in his chest. His heart was beating harder and harder. “And I don’t know where the tattoo is from.”
“Are you serious?” Luke chuckled. “I know people get drunk and get weird tattoos sometimes, but you can’t tell me you don’t remember getting such a big tattoo!! It looks like you got it yesterday or something. Were you drunk?”
“Believe me or not, I don’t remember anything. And I don’t drink. I don’t even know what it’s like, to get drunk. I want to answer your questions, Luke, but I... just can’t.” Michael said, turning his elbow to his face to look closely at the black symbol. “It burns though.”
Luke stared at Michael worringly, as the bruised boy quickly pulled on the grey hoodie over his head, to cover his bare skin and his ugly wounds. He picked up Michael’s stained sweater on the ground.
“Maybe you want to eat something? And you’ll try to tell me what...”
The sound of Luke’s doorbell ringing caught him off guard. A confused look on his face, he walked to the door, leaving Michael alone in his living room. Michael, who didn’t know where to put himself, was scared of who might be behind that door. Luke’s words came back to him, when he told him about his words in his sleep: “it sounded like someone was hurting you”. Maybe Michael wasn’t safe. He didn’t feel safe.
Stepping closer to the window and discreetly pushing the curtains aside, he heard Luke open the door and then, loud voices. Without knowing why, Michael felt like he didn’t want to be seen in here, at Luke’s place. People, whoever they’d be, would ask questions. He was starting to think about hiding under the couch, but it was too late, the living room door suddenly opened. Michael turned around and saw Luke coming in, followed by two boys ; one was holding a pile of flat carton boxes, laughing.
“Calum wanted to get pineapple on his pizza. Thank god, they also make normal pizzas so I ordered a...”
As they saw Michael standing there by the window, they all stopped and stared at each other silently. Michael was just awkwardly standing there, pulling on Luke’s soft hoodie’s sleeves, wishing he could bury himself underground. Apparently Luke had forgotten he had invited friends over. One of them had darker skin, black hair, and was wearing a cheetah-printed bucket hat, which made Michael doubt his fashion choices right away.The other boy, with what looked like black dyed hair, who was holding the pizzas, asked out of the blue:
“Why’s there someone in your living room, Luke?”
Michael jumped at his agressive tone. He wanted to leave. He knew he wasn’t welcome anymore. Luke had his own life, and he was indeed, a stranger in his house.
“Guys, this is Michael. I met him this morning, he had hurt his hand and had nowhere to go. He borrowed one of my hoodies, because his was dirty.” Luke said, getting closer to Michael and putting one arm around his shoulders to show him through his body language, that he could stay. “Michael, this is Ashton and Calum. We were supposed to eat pizzas at my place tonight but I had completely forgotten, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I was just... really worried about you.” He turned to his friends, who couldn’t look more surprised. “Please, be nice to him. Maybe Michael can eat with us? I’m sure he has loads of things to tell us.”
“I mean - why not?” Calum stuttered, confused, looking at Ashton for support.
“You know welcoming strangers in your house isn’t really safe, Luke” Ashton said on a concerned tone, he then turned to Michael. “I mean... Not to be rude mate, but we don’t know you. Where do you live?”
Caught off guard by his rude tone, Michael froze, immediatly turning to Luke’s blue eyes to look for his help.
“You... still don’t remember anything?” Luke asked, worringly, which made Michael’s eyes tear up again.
“I don’t” Michael whispered, sniffling as he felt he was definitely about to cry. “I’m sorry.”
Luke instantly pulled him in a hug, putting his arms around the boy’s waist. Surprised, Michael jumped, but he then responded by holding Luke tight. A hug was all he needed. Closing his eyes, a few tears rolled down his cheeks. He breathed in the smell of aftershave and almond shampoo in Luke’s blonde curls. They both stayed like this, Luke waiting for Michael’s heartbeat to slow down. If only they could stay like this forever, Michael thought.
Calum and Ashton, still standing there, were confused but started to understand Michael's situation wasn’t that simple. After a few seconds, Ashton sighed and put down the pizzas on the wooden table in front of Luke’s red couch. Michael opened his eyes, still holding onto Luke, his chin resting on the boy’s shoulder, and saw Ashton was now smiling at him, even though he looked hesistant. He sat down on the couch and softly said:
“So... you like pepperoni pizza, Michael?”
