Jesper: Kaz! Wylan’s been hurt! *carrying an unconscious, very beat up Wylan*
Kaz: What?
Inej: What?!
Jesper: You have to do something!
Nina: Put him on the table!
Matthias: *shoving everything off a table*
Kaz: Who did this?
Jesper: *panicking*
Kaz: Jesper?
Jesper: WHAT?!
Kaz: Who…did this?
Jesper: Some Dime Lion who caught him looking around a garden.
Kaz: What did he look like?
Jesper: Um…someone said…big guy, scar over his left eye, missing a pinky anchor tattoo on his right forearm. I would’ve gone after the bastard but…. *looks back at Wylan* He was just looking at plants Kaz!
Kaz: Inej. Matthias.
Inej: Fully breathing or barely?
Kaz: Enough that he can pay.
Nina: I’d like to be there as well.
Kaz: You have my word you will be. I want him kept alive long enough to give me a good excuse.

“Read, read, read. Read everything — trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it.”

Jesper: You know how you always want us to bring you things you can use against people?
Kaz: Yes?
Jesper: This isn’t like that, but I need all of you to come with me.
Kaz: Why?
Jesper: Because I’m your brother and if you don’t you’re going on the next job without my charm or my guns.
Kaz: 😒 fine.
Jesper: *takes everyone up to the roof* You all have to promise you won’t make a sound.
Inej: On it.
Kaz, Nina, Matthias: Okay?
Jesper: *opens the door to the roof and they are all met by singing*
Nina: Wait is that…
Kaz: Wylan?
Jesper: Shhh.
*all of them just stand there and listen, Inej and Nina are obviously moved, Matthias’ eyes are closed as he listens, Kaz pretends like he doesn’t care, but he never moves, Jesper is smiling lovingly, proud, Wylan stops singing and turns, seeing everyone in the doorway*
Wylan: Uh…oh…hi, how long has everyone been…listening?
Nina: Not long, but you are amazing.
Inej: More than amazing.
Matthias: You should be proud of your gift.
Jesper: See? I told you. *goes over to Wylan, taking his hands* You have so much talent. Right Kaz?
Kaz: ….Inej, make sure the roofs are safe for him from now on, I don’t want anyone thinking they can take my demo man from me while he’s up here. *starts to walk away, pauses* I may start leaving my window open should you wish to come up here again. *leaves*
Jesper: Told you he likes you.

MWW Artwork of the Day (1/19/23) Matthias Stom (Dutch, fl. 1615–1649) Mucius Scaevola in the presence of Lars Porsenna (c. 1642) Oil on canvas, 167.5 x 220 cm. Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney
In the dazzling comet's tail of painters called the Caravaggisti - the admirers of Caravaggio who kept alive his flame for more than a century - Matthias Stomer stands out for his considered temperament and cool execution. Almost an academic of the movement, though never an imitative hack, Stomer built a body of work on the basis of subjects like this. Antiquity in general and Roman history in particular were his primary source material, reflecting a classicism which had little to do with Caravaggio's own almost exclusively biblical interests. Stomer's 'Mucius Scaevola in the presence of Lars Porsenna' could be seen to anticipate the high moral tone, and consequent sober rendition, found in the works of later neoclassical figures such as David.
