As long as I’ve been on Tumblr I have seen posts talking about how undervalued women are in fandom, and I’ve nodded along, reblogged and moved on with my life. Occasionally I’ve tried to figure out how one would solve this problem at least in their own fandom experiences, and I’ve never had an answer, but today I am here to tell you: the answer is Mei.

I’m 100% joking, but also so serious. Mei is the most undervalued character in lmk and she deserves so much more love. She is the only girl in the main cast (I’m counting red son as a boy because that’s what he is in cannon) and she has so many cool things about her. She’s literally descended from dragons, she has a complex relationship with her parents, trouble sharing her feelings and asking for help, and she HOSTED LITERAL WORLD ENDING FLAMES, but when you look at her followers on tumblr you’d think she doesn’t do much.

Before I carry on with all this data analysis I want to say that I’m not shaming any specific people for not being particularly interested in Mei. The important thing when it comes to biases isn’t one specific case it’s trends, so it’s not about whether you like Mei, it's about whether you have a tendency to think guy characters are more interesting to talk about them more.

Anyways, when you look at Ao3 tags you may think that Mei has just as many fics about her as a lot of the main cast (minus the main character and the gay monkeys of course), but when you filter for fics tagged with Mei in them you’ll find a frustrating amount that have her as a supporting character or worse mentioned that one time. The thing about tagging characters is you’re not saying the fic is about them you’re saying the fic has them as part of the plot, and so most of her popularity comes from being an amazing best friend, matchmaker and a party animal instead of any of her internal conflicts.

To find fics that were actually about Mei (to some degree) I filtered for the tags Mei-centric and Mei Needs a Hug,and the results were much different. Mei’s number of fics is around how many Tang has. She has 10 more Needs a Hug fics than him, and he has 10 more -centric fics than her. The only character she’s beating out is Pigsy whose -centric tag doesn’t even have it’s own page yet.

Probably the most popular aspect of fandom (for better or worse) is shipping, and there’s a surprising lack of shippable characters in lmk. With the brotherhood and older demons there’s some variation, but for the stoplight trio they really only have each other (at least from what I’ve seen), and when you look at the popularity (on Ao3) of the different ships the results are… decisive. The most popular ship in the trio is MK/Red Son and the runner up Mei/Red Son has only 1/5 of the fics. I personally only really like MK/Red SOn and the whole trio shipped together (poly ships aren’t as popular), but I’m still surprised that Mei/Red Son, which is the one most supported by cannon in my opinion, is so much less popular.

Unlike the others this isn’t really me saying Mei absolutely should be shipped more, but shipping is pretty much always correlated to how popular a character is in fandom so I thought it was worth mentioning.

I don’t really know what to say at the end of this. I’m not much of a analyzer or a headcanoner. I don’t know how to delta every interesting thing I love about her. Please just take a second to appreciate Mei and all that she’s been through. Maybe partake in Mei thursday every once and awhile or just talk about her more. I don’t know, I just wanted to make a bunch of graphs about it. (Thank you @mythicalmagical-monkeyman for inspiring this <3)

In a moment of "I'm getting really sad about Macaque and MK parallels", I just keep thinking about how all MK's wanted to do was quit while they were ahead, but he hasn't been able too. He's been pushed and pushed and pushed at every turn. His journey "is just beginning", and "forever's a long time"—there's been no choice for things to stay the same. "No, Prongs, you got last Thursday after practice. I specifically remember because I tried telling you to shower first, so that she wasn't getting a face full of your sweat." Remus narrows his eyes at James, who scoffs indignantly.

"Yeah, you told me to shower so I didn't stink, and I did! And while I was in the bathroom, you swooped in a tired her out!"

"That is not true," Remus snaps, "I went to the library! You're thinking of Tuesday, which was before Thursday, when your turn was, which means that I get the next turn."

"Mate, I'm telling you," James huffs, and Sirius plants his face into your shoulder with an overexaggerated snore, "I didn't get a go last week at all!"

"Well now you're being ridiculous," Remus gripes, "You have your face stuffed between her thighs practically every night, Potter. If you're gonna lie do it more convincingly."

"But this week's been busy and I haven't got the chance!" James insists, "Moony, Sirius might give into everything you want, but I'm not budging. It's my turn."

"Pair of charmers, aren't they?" Sirius drawls, his breath hot against the back of your neck as he murmurs by your ear.

"Mhm," You hum, and tense as his hand creeps up your thigh beneath your comforter, "Siri-"

"Shh," He quiets you, "They're gonna be bickering for a while. Why not enjoy ourselves?"

"They'll be jealous," You lament, but you don't push his hand away when it dips below the waistband of your pajama shorts, "Sirius, if we get caught-"

"Don't get us caught then, darling." He purrs, mouthing at the sensitive skin on your neck just below your ear. He leaves a sticky kiss there, trailing them down towards your collarbones as the first of his fingers ghosts down your slit, sending shivers up your spine, "If you're nice and quiet, they'll never know."

The last thing you expected to do in the middle of the night on a Thursday was fall cleanly out of the sky.

There were a few things that set you up for this event: one, overwhelming excitement about the new boot attachments that your friend Mei had designed for you; two, zoning out when she’d given you her long winded explanation; three, the audacity to sneak out of your dorm room in the middle of the night to use them; and four, an overwhelming fear of failure making you desperate for any advantage.

The attachments had been secure on your costume and had been working out fine for the first few minutes of flight, and thus, you’d been confident enough to hover higher and higher, until you were far above the tops of the many trees that surrounded UA, and practicing your aim and range with your gauntlets for nearly an hour.

What you had forgotten was that your new upgraded boots siphoned energy from your gauntlets the same way your beams did, and while they were reasonably efficient, they were not infallible.

And thus they short-circuited - there was a split second between the realization that you could no longer shoot nor float before you found yourself hurtling toward the ground.

Harden, harden, harden was all you could think of for the few split seconds, and perhaps enough of your fall would be mitigated that you wouldn’t break all your bones at once. The trees were not kind enough to break your fall, and your hands grabbed frantically but caught purchase on nothing. All that was left was the loud thump, thump, thump of your blood rushing into your ears and somewhere in your panic you forgot to scream till you were just a meter above the ground.

Your eyes closed-

And your body didn’t shatter.

Your body hit something, and your breath held as you waited for pain and possibly death, which never came. Letting out a breath sharply, it occurred to you that there were arms.

Something, someone, had caught you.

Stunned, your eyes met with Izuku’s. Rather than say thank you, the word ‘How’ sprang forth.

“Are you okay?” he asked, instead.

“Y-yeah.”

There remained something shaky about your voice as he helped you onto your feet. Your head spun a tiny bit in confusion and you could feel it in your legs, or maybe it was dizziness from having the energy drained out of you, and the last few desperate attempts to fortify your bones.

“What were you doing?” he asked, steadying you with an arm. His voice clearly betrayed concern but there was a more stern quality to it, like he was annoyed at you. Which you understood - another second and you would have been a spot on the ground and that would serve no one to find first thing in the morning.

You tried to disrupt the miasma of near death experience with a laugh once the vertigo lessened.

“I, uh… just found out I wasn’t as good at flying as I thought I was.”

Izuku did not laugh. On the contrary, he frowned deeply, rubbing his chin with his hand. He didn’t look at you now, but seemed to be suddenly in his thoughts, and the more stubborn and prideful part of you began to rise, wondering why he was making a big deal out of the awkward but evidently benign circumstance.

“What are you doing out here at this time of night?” you pivoted.

“Couldn’t sleep,” he replied.

You raised an eyebrow. “So you wandered around in the woods?”

He matched your expression. “It seems popular, doesn’t it?”

Touché.

You weren’t exactly sure what to do now. Izuku had clearly saved your life and almost seemed angry about it. Rightfully so, because it was stupid and you had been lucky.

Perhaps you should thank him. You could start there.

“... Thanks for… catching me.”

Izuku didn’t reply immediately, again frowning, his bottom lip very slightly pulled between his teeth as he decided what to do next.

“If you come out here again, text me.”

You furrowed your eyebrow.

“Why would I do that?”

Izuku looked even more upset now and you quickly reconsidered your words.

“Okay, I realize how that sounds,” you laughed again, nervously. “But I won’t do it again so don’t worry.”

“You won’t fall out of the sky in the middle of the night?” he repeated.

You grimaced. “N-no?”

Again, you were not exactly sure where this conversation was taking you. He blew air from his nose as if he were sighing deeply and giving up on something, you weren’t sure what.

“You won’t because I’m staying out with you.”

Your face warmed, and for whatever reason you felt compelled to raise your gauntlets.

“I’m out of juice, so I’m probably out of commission for tonight.”

He tilted his head to the side ever so slightly.

“Did you still want to train?” he asked. You considered, then decided to tell the truth.

“Maybe.”

He placed his hand on one of the gauntlets, voice softening. “I’ll charge them if you let me stay out with you.”

You paused for a moment. It’s not as though you could stop him from staying out with you. But why? Perhaps because you were very stupid. Perhaps because he needed something to keep his mind from racing, and keeping an idiot from dying is preoccupying enough.

There’s a new light dusting of pink on his cheeks that underlie his freckles, you noticed.

Perhaps it’s something else.

“The Found Weekend”

This happened exactly 50 years ago: in late March- early April 1974, Yoko Ono lost total control over John Lennon, putting him in care Mei Pang.

Yes, John would later call this period of drug and alcohol delirium “A lost weekend”, but considering that the last one took place at that time - in fact, the only one after the Beatles! - jam session with participation Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and John Lennon, and their last photos together were taken, then this is just a godsend for history and Beatlemans!

On Thursday, March 28, 1974, Paul and Linda McCartney drops by Burbank Studios in California to see how the album is being recorded Harry Nilsson's Pussycats, produced by John, and Paul joins a jam session with John and other musicians on the track ‘Midnight Special‘, which is their first joint performance in the musical environment after the split of the Beatles, which happened about four years before. At the end of the day, John invites Paula at her music session at the beach house in Santa Monica.

These days, the last known photos of John and Paul together were taken. The photographers were John's mistress, Mae Pang, as well as the former roadie Beatles and at that time Lennon's bodyguard, Mel Evans. Several polaroids belong to Linda McCartney, as well as a friend and assistant Keith Moon to Dougal Butler. Dougal takes pictures on April 1, 1974, in which Paul performs a medley of Beatles songs on the piano, as well as those where John and Paul are together by the pool. (This polaroid photo will be the last ever joint photo of John and Paul...)

With no plans to record at Burbank Studios, John spends Sunday, March 31 relaxing by the pool, and later that evening holds the second of his Sunday music jam sessions at his beach house. Paul was among those present.

Along with two former Beatles (John on guitar, Paul on drums behind the drum kit of Ringo, who was absent at the time - and both often on vocals), there are Linda (Hammond organ), Stevie Wonder (electric piano), Jesse Ed Davis and others. Cecilia is recording, and among them are melodies that they completely do not understand, you never believed, like: "Never trust a Bastard with Your Mother", "Little Beauty", "I Left Home And Wandered around", "Lucille", "Nightmares", "Be on your Guard I", "Cupid", "Chain Gang" and "Take This Hammer".

At the end of the session, in the early morning of April 1, Paul, Linda and their family go to the nearest hotel. And to the beach house Jonah is coming to Ringo... and he finds out that Paul had been here shortly before and played his drum kit.

Closer to lunch, they return to the beach house Paul and Linda, however John hadn't gotten up yet. Paul immediately heads to the piano and, along with Moon and Nilsson, performs a medley of Beatles songs, which all three musicians are happy to join. After that, Nilsson suggests Semi is a bit of a dangerous drug known as ‘angel dust‘, from which Paul refuses. John wakes up around 3 p.m. and joins other musicians and friends who are relaxing by the pool.

During his 1975 interview on BBC2 Old Grey Whistle Test John briefly recalled that session:

“I really played with Paul. We did a lot of things in Los Angeles. But there were fifty other people playing, and they were all just watching me and Paul!”

By the way, in April 1974, after many refusals following his drug conviction in England in 1973, Paul finally received an American visa. And on April 13, 1974, the album Band On The Run ascended to the top of the American album charts. It would go on to sell over 6,000,000 copies worldwide and spend over two years on the US and UK charts. Meanwhile, it is reported that on the same day, Paul's ex-girlfriend, an actress Jane Asher, gave birth to a baby girl in England.

Alright, so I did not think the pilot episode would take me 4.5 hours, but it did. I'll have to keep that in mind going forward for other specials.

So, MK has the staff and seems to be able to pick up some of Sun Wukong's abilities without any formal training. Considering it to him... 10 years(????) to learn some of those powers, that's pretty impressive.

He was chosen by Sun Wukong maybe for that reason, but I'm still thinking there's another. Is it possible that he's a decedent? And, if so, how far back? I feel like I'm on to something with this thread, but I don't have the full picture of the tapestry in front of me yet. So, we'll get there when we'll get there.

Another thing I'm thinking: Pigsy, Sandy, and Tang. They're all the originals. From JttW. Just some of their conversations and interactions are making me think this. Particularly the scenes on Sandy's boat after they lost MK and Pigsy with Mei and MK when they were ashore on the Flaming Mountains. There's just something about those scenes in particular that are sticking out to me.

Ok, so tomorrow is movie night. The past couple times I've tried to squeeze in an episode it hasn't worked out, so no episode tomorrow. But! 2 on Thursday and maybe 3 on Friday? Until then!

This All Star bracket is already off to an interesting start. Are we going to get a two time winner or will someone else get the top spot...

I know this round has been a little heartbreaking for some but this was never going to be easy.
