— Rock Angel
Bakugo x Rock Angel! Sasha-coded! Fem! Black! Reader
Synopsis: What it’s like to date Bakugo as a Bratz Rock Angel
TW: Swearing
Note: Click/Tap here for the full collab!
⇶ He’s your biggest fan, honestly
⇶ He’s a huge fan of the whole band, of course
⇶ But he’s your biggest fan
⇶ Katsuki loves to come to your shows, always backstage with you, helping you prep, amping you up, and of course, acting like your personal security
⇶ Doesn’t even let people get the chance to get near you whenever you’re walking into the venue, pushing people away from you and shouting for people to “get the hell out of the way!”
⇶ Absolutely no Twevils will be crashing your show on his watch! And if they get it, it’s by buying a ticket and supporting y’all!
⇶ Your actual security thinks it’s a bit much, but you’d be a liar if you said you didn’t like seeing your man go so hard for you!
⇶ When you’re in your dressing room, he’s always there with you
⇶ Helps you into your outfit if you need help, pick out accessories, pick makeup, etc
⇶ Never even lets you go out with a hair on your head that’s out of place
⇶ He’ll fix the ends of your braids/twists, make sure your wig is in place, fix your Afro shape, be sure that your retwist still looks fresh, ensure that your slick back is slick, and that your edges are laid. You will not be looking a mess as long as this man is around!
⇶ And obviously he’s gotta hype his girl up for the show!
“You’re gonna do fuckin’ awesome out there.”
“Obviously! I’ve been waiting all month to preform this song, and I produced it, so you know it’s gonna be rockin’!” You cheered.
Katsuki loved seeing you get excited before shows, your energy and enthusiasm was always on ten, but you clearly got a different type of rush from preforming.
“Obviously. Who’s the biggest fuckin’ rockstar in the world?” Katsuki grinned.
“Me!” You exclaimed, posing to punctuate your word.
“That’s my baby.”
⇶ When you get stressed out before a really big show and need some alone time, he still doesn’t leave you alone
⇶ It’s not to stress you out more, it’s just because he knows it’s not good for you to sit in your own anxieties just before a set
⇶ Getting mad at him is no use either, he just thinks you’re cute
“Katsuki, get out of my changing room, I am not playin’ with you!”
“And if I don’t?” He challenged, smirking at you.
Kissing your teeth, you picked up a magazine and chucked it in his direction. He dodged it with ease, and simply laughed in response.
“You’re cute when you’re mad, Bunny,” Katsuki teased.
“Boy, you better find you somethin’ safe to do–”
⇶ Usually sends Cloe or Yasmin in if he really can’t get through to you (which is a rare occurrence)
⇶ Once you get on stage, he sits on the sidelines just enjoying the music and looking at you the whole time
⇶ Between sets, he always tells all of you that you did good, and checks on you to make sure you’re not too tired and drinking water
⇶ He trusts Cloe, Jade, Yasmin, and Roxxi to do the same for you, of course, since they’re your closest friends, but he likes to do it himself most of the time
⇶ Always gives you a good luck kiss before you go back on
⇶ Katsuki is always helping you with producing, so much so that he’s sometimes listed as a producer on the bands songs
⇶ And if he’s not listed as a producer, you’ll likely find him credited as the drummer
⇶ Learns a little bass guitar to help even more
⇶ Lovesss that he’s always one of the first- if not the first- people out side of the band to hear your songs
⇶ Always provides a little bit of feedback, but other than that he thinks everything you do is perfect, and you can’t help but agree
⇶ Katsuki loves how confident and determined you are about yourself and everything you do. Seeing you be optimistic and outspoken all the time always makes him want to do better for himself
⇶ Even though you’re a bit more energetic and adventurous, you match his energy in terms of knowing who you are and ambition, and you complement each other well
⇶ You’re too good to him sometimes, honestly. Always giving him pick me ups whenever he’s upset or stressed, letting him vent. And you’re very protective of him when the tabloids or the Twevils get a bit passive aggressive towards him
⇶ You and Katsuki are THEE couple. Period.
⇶ You’re always seen out on cute dates or just wherever being cute
⇶ People always point out the lovesick looks you two give each other when you’re in one another’s presence
⇶ Fashion icons.
⇶ There’s not a single picture out there where either of you look bad
⇶ ESPECIALLY not one where you’re together
⇶ If you’re not matching, you’re color coordinated at least and wearing the same textures and fabrics
⇶ Katsuki is more than happy to fund your shopping addiction. He knows you’ll wear whatever it is that you’re eyeing in the store, and he knows you’ll wear it well
⇶ Though, it does baffle him a bit how someone can even spend so much money on clothes all the time
⇶ And don’t even get him started on when you go shopping with Cloe or Jade. You’ve all got shopping addictions, but they’re certified shopaholics, and you’ll buy more clothes than you’ll ever need after just a few hours at the mall with them
“Oh my gosh! Angel, Kool Kat, look at this Juicy Couture bag!”
“Gorg!” They gasped in unison.
“It’s so you Bunny Boo! Like, it was literally made for you, you have to get it!” Cloe urged.
Katsuki took the bag from you, digging around for a price tag before finding it in an inner pocket.
“Fuckin’ hell…” He cursed.
“You don’t have to pay for it if you don’t want to, Katsu. I can-” Just as you went to reach for your card, he stopped you mid sentence and grabbed your hand.
“Nah, I’ve got it.”
⇶ Naturally, you return the favor by smothering him with your irreplaceable love, kissing all over his face, leaving stains of brown lip liner and gloss while calling him your handsome man
⇶ Wears every mark like a badge of honor, and implores you to leave them right before you go out somewhere just so everyone knows he’s yours
⇶ Katsuki just loves his little Rock Angel 🫶🏾

Eddie had been pacing back and forth for probably half an hour. He was meant to go on stage in 15 minutes and he was still yet to see your beautifully scary face. He had sorta convinced himself you were gonna bail. Although your conversation on the phone had been lovely, filled with fun facts and delirious giggles, Eddie was always down on his luck when it came to girls. To be with him was to be with an outcast, the towns laughing stock. He was the guy mothers pulled their kids away from when walking down the street, so it wouldn't surprise him if you just didn't turn up and never spoke again.
Although he was a natural pessimist, there was still a crumb of hope that sat in the centre of his chest telling him she's gonna show. This is exactly why he wasn't tuning his guitar, ready to perform for the 5 drunks in the audience. Ever the over-thinker, Eddie began to spiral. What if you do come and you think the music is shit- OR or you're so embarrassed at how few people actually turned up that you laugh him out of there with that sexy witches cackle he'd grown to crave...-
"Eddie we're on in five dude... just forget about her okay... maybe she's sick or something..."
Gareth's less than comforting murmurs made eddies eyes widen. TEN MINUTES. Ten whole minutes had passed, and all he had done was fixate on the fact that you still weren't here. Maybe he could fake an illness too? Make the entire thing less embarrassing, at least then he'd have an excuse to call you, let you know that he never actually performed anyways.
"Dude seriously get your ass up here..."
Now Jeff was chiming in, his lips pursed in a thin line as he spoke with his teeth clenched. He resembled a mother scolding their child, which was quite fitting. Eddie was indeed acting like a child. Similar to a toddler he pouted and slid on his guitar, tuning it haphazardly. He didn't even care if they sucked anymore (I mean they already did according to 99% of their audience), he just wanted to see you. Those shining eyes and sparkling teeth hidden behind dark makeup and leather accessories.
The beating of the drums and the lonesome claps of the audience brought Eddie out of his reverie. His fingers moved on autopilot as he strummed along to their first song. He was hardly present, his eyes straying to the door in between strikes of his guitar. Was he gripping the pic harder than usual? Of course.
One song done. Onto the second. He was starting to lose the constant urge to scan the room in hopes of seeing you. His eyes just focus on the instrument in his arms. That was until murmured shouting could be heard from outside the hideout. It was obvious the band were attempting to ignore it, but even the regulars who were dotted about couldn't help but let their eyes wander to the door, their nosiness getting the best of them.
The cheap lights that hung from the ceiling and were haphazardly facing the stage with the help of cable ties obstructed eddies view more than he would have liked. The yelling was probably just some drunk dude with a mouth of his own vomit, I mean this was the hideout after all. The place for outcasts like Eddie and his friends, and also Middle-Aged men who only found enjoyment inside their beer bottles. Eddie secretly prayed he'd never end up like them.
The shouting intensified even though the amps were a mere meter away from him. Suddenly a figure stumbled into view and eddies heart dropped to his toes. There you stood, bottom of your skirt torn and knees adorning scrapes like you'd fallen, or been pushed. The only reason he'd assumed the latter was because of the smirking prep stood behind you her hand mid-air like she'd just given you a final shove before laughing with her friends.
The tormenters in question murmured several derogatory comments pertaining to your style before being ushered from the establishment. Before Eddie even knew what he was doing, he had jumped from the stage ditching his beloved guitar, and bundling over to you like his- or in this case, your life depended on it. Lucky for him amidst the altercation the band had stopped playing too.
"Oh god... Jesus oh Jesus I'll kill those fuckers... I'll fucking kill them... are you okay?"
It was a stupid question really. Your eyes were void of any discernible emotion, and although he thought it impossible when he first met you, it looked like you wanted to burst into tears. But you didn't. Instead, you straightened your back, pulled a black handkerchief from your bag and wiped at the grazes. Just when Eddie assumed you didn't want to speak to him, your eyes met his own, and you let words leave those dark, slightly smudged lips.
"Can you get me a drink... preferably alcoholic..."
Amid all of the pain you must have been feeling, Eddie was shocked to see a laugh bubble out of your throat, that same awkward cackle he'd memorised over the phone and attempted to replay in his head every time he missed you. It was contagious, and soon the metalhead found himself joining in, however far more cautiously.
"Sure... I think the gigs over so... I have uh... beers in my van... I think Gareth had whiskey-"
"Yes... yeah, whiskey sounds great..."
Eddie simply nodded, his curls bouncing as he simply turned on his heel and ran to his friends with panicked eyes. He'd never been in this situation before. He was usually the target, he was the one being laughed at and harassed. Eddie wasn't sure how to comfort you, I mean it's not like the both of you had known each other all that long. However, the one thing he did have was understanding, although he had this unbothered front, sometimes he did crave being cared for, and he would do anything to make you feel cared for at that moment that was for sure.
"Gareth... I need whiskey... now"
"What? Is the girl okay-"
"I NEED WHISKEY NOW DIMWIT"
Gareth's eyes widened and with a brief roll of his eyes, he reached for his backpack pulling out his flask before it was rapidly snatched from his grip. A few seconds later Eddie was returning to your side, passing you the flask. There was a mix of worry and awe as he watched you chug probably half the contents before looking back to him with a weak smile. It looked heavy. It looked fake. He hated that.
"Well the bands gonna go grab pizza... and I already ate so... we could go back to my van if you wanna hang out-"
"Yes... just... can we get out of this shit hole..." You opened your mouth and closed it like a goldfish before screwing your eyes shut "Sorry I... you probably love this place and I'm shitting all over it like an idiot-"
Boldly, Eddie placed a hand on your arm, his usual grin widening just at how endearing he found you.
"No trust me... this place is a shit hole... cmon..."
Eddies arm lightly brushed down your arm until he was lumberingly holding your hand. It was more like a grab than a gentle holding, he didn't want you to think he was using this awful incident to get into your pants. Eddie may have been a lot of things, but a moral-less ass was not one of them.
Once the two of you reached his van, Eddie took great pleasure in opening the door for you, he smiled even wider as you clambered in clumsily. You two were too alike. Now you were both seated, windows shut so the cold night air couldn't bite at your exposed skin and the warm heaters blasting dry air in both of your faces. Comically your hair-sprayed Barnet still didn't move.
"So... you don't have to tell me but... what happened?"
The air was feeling thicker now, and Eddie cringed when you tried to form words but couldn't. It hurt him, even more, when he realised this wasn't the first time you'd experienced crap like this. While he wasn't necessarily surprised, it hurt no less to know such a kind soul was being picked on just because of your outer shell.
"Well uh... I was late and my dad couldn't give me a lift so... I got on the bus... those girls clearly didn't appreciate me giggling at their dumb conversation... I mean they were talking about who they'd rather bang... hall or Oates..." you both shared a giggle at that.
"But then the insults started... and we got off at the same stop... it's all sort of a blur to be honest... I told one to fuck off and before I knew it they'd tripped me just outside..." This time you huffed out a laugh but it wasn't sweet or endearing, it was humourless. It was pained.
"I'm sorry by the way..."
Eddies brows raised at that. What the hell could you be sorry for?
"For what? Jesus y/n I should be apologising... I... I should have run out and scared those idiots off with my devil-worshipping powers..."
Now your laugh returned to its usual cackle and some of the heaviness looked as though it had been lived from your eyes, your entire body for that matter. Even now after being tormented and made to feel as small as an ant, you still looked breathtaking. Like the type of beautiful where Eddie wanted to just scream it at you, just make sure that you knew. But unfortunately, Eddie wasn't that brave, not yet anyway.
"You couldn't of known Eddie... it's all okay now though... I’m just hoping they don’t go to Hawkins high…”
Huh? Hawkins high… oh shit.
“Wait? Are you starting there?”
You nodded and eddies eyes lit up like the moon above his van. The thought of getting to see this girl every day was even more exciting. Walking her to class, eating lunch with her, Damn the domesticity sounded intoxicating. Right then and there Eddie took a silent oath to be your protector. If anyone tried to fuck with you like they had tonight, they’d have to go through him first, and he could be a scrappy little shit when he wanted to.
“Well princess… you're in luck… I’m currently attending Hawkins high…”
“Oh, shit really? Well, now I feel relieved…”
There was a mutual moment of fondness for one another then. The both of you stewed in your mutual growing affections, completely unaware that the other felt the same. Too oblivious idiots dressed in black. A match made in heaven. Or hell.
“By the way the ripped skirt and bloody knees are super metal…”
“Ya think so?”
“Definitely…”

Fuck it, because I want to, I'm gonna rank my IEMS and give them a short review lets go
KZ x Crinacle CRN - ~£30 - These were my first "Neutral" sounding IEMs. I felt like a Real Music Liker when I used these, however they had no bass and a very weird treble response. I later found out that most units sold of these were completely broken, with some only utilising the Dynamic driver, and other having glue in the inner routing channels. I don't know if mine was affected by this, but there's is a whole story behind KZ and Crinacle (popular youtube audio reviewer) so I don't buy KZ anymore. This is the first of a few Crinacle collaboration IEMs.
Tumblr media
Moondrop Chu - <£20 - These were the first IEMS I brought from a more reputable brand, and they honestly blew me away for the price. This is what started my IEM hobby. For the price I cannot fault them for sound or build quality. Metal shell, solid sound signature, however not having a removeable cable did make them a little tricky to keep in my ears. Unfortunately my ears seem to be cryptonite to any budget Moondrop IEM, and the audio filters quickly clogged. I did replace them, but it happened again soon after.
Tumblr media
Moondrop Aria - £80 - Because my Chus blocked up (i didn't know about the filters at the time), I upgraded myself to their Big Brother. This IEM was the original market shake-up, you could not get sound quality and tuning anything like this for the money they were asking. I still have them, however like the Chus, the filters got blocked very easily. I replaced them fairly regularly for a while, but I could only get them straight from china, and the hassle of that quickly wore me down. I've stopped using them now because I have better IEMS, but they do hold a place in my heart for being such a mind blowing IEM when I first got them.
Tumblr media
Dunu Titan S - £80 - I bought these for no other reason than other reviewers saying "They compete with the Aria" and they look really cool. That's it, no other reasons. The reviewers were right, they have a slightly different midrange and my pair felt a little more bassy than the Aria. They do not, however, like to stay put in my ears no matter which tips I use with them. So they don't sit in my regular rotation. I got them in sandblasted black and red.
Tumblr media
7hz Salnotes x Crinacle Dioko - ~£100 - I'll be honest on this one, I regret buying these. They have no bass, they don't stay in my ears, and they look... unique? Weird. They look weird. They were the first IEMs I bought that came with a nice hard case and a lot of accessories. I do not use these at all and have tried several times to try to sell them, but my thoughts seem to be pretty common. These use a planar driver which is the only thing that sets them apart from everything else on this list, which is largely Single Dynamic Driver IEMs.
Tumblr media
7hz Salnotes ZERO - <£20 - These came out in a wave of sub £/$20 IEM offerings from the chinese hi-fi scene, and these were a standout competitor in sound quality and tuning. I still use these sometimes, but only when I use the bass boost on my headphone amp. The neutral tuning is great, but they really do sing when the bass is boosted. It later came out that these are actually a Crinacle collaboration as well, however due to him working on these at the same time as the next IEM on this list, he decided it would be a silent collaboration instead. Solid recommendation for anyone who wants to get into IEMs or wants a solid pair of earbuds!
Tumblr media
Truthear x Crinacle Zero - £40 - Due to NDAs from both companies, Crinacle couldn't sway either Truthear or 7hz to change the name, Crin chose to put his name on these as he wanted to help this incredibly new company break new ground. These IEMs were fairly unique when they released, they have 2 dynamic drivers, with one set to be a subwoofer and the other to handle everything else. The quality of the bass in these IEMS is like nothing else I own and this is what solidified me in the hobby, as I finally knew what was possible. I barely use them however, as the nozzle on these (the part that goes in your ear) is HUGE. I can't find a way to wear these comfortably, which is a huge shame in my eyes as this is the tuning that I have the most fun with. This isn't the last time you hear about Thruthear though.
Tumblr media
Sennheiser IE200 - £120 - These were something of an impulse buy while at a hi-fi show. I got them for £100. These are without a doubt the best sounding IEMs that I own and I always come back to them. I don't know how sennheiser managed to squeeze this level of audio quality from a single dynamic driver, but the experience and heritage of the brand really comes through with these. One thing that I don't like is the cable. It feels cheap, it tangles easily, and makes these look much cheaper than they actually are. The ear hooks having wire in them is a huge help though, and it helps them stay in place. These would be my desert island IEMs.
Tumblr media
Moondrop Chu 2 - <£20 - it's the Chu but better! WIth detachable cables this time. The sound signature is better than the original Chu, but again, the filters are very prone to clogging for me. At £20 they were more of a throwaway impulse purchase than anything else. Will be gifting these to a friend at some point if I can be bothered to replace the filters any time soon.
Tumblr media
Truthear NOVA - £150 - They're back! This is what I refer to as the Zeros big brother. The design on the outside of the shell is similar, but everything has been updated on the inside. One dynamic driver and 4 balanced armature drivers (basically hearing aid speakers) with the DD set up once again as a subwoofer. These feel like premium IEMs and they're my newest purchase, so I think I'm still in somewhat of a honeymoon period with them, but they're really solid. The nozzle is much narrower then the Zero (which is something I researched thoroughly before buying) and they fit very nicely in my ears despite being a much larger shell than anything else I have. I do wish there was more bass on them, and while many people call them a "baby Variations" (a Moondrop IEM that is only big money wishlist at £520), they don't hold up in the same way, and I am still looking for a more bass heavy IEM.
Tumblr media
Tin Hifi T2 - Free - I found these in a bin at the hackspace with a broken connector. Fixed it and bought new cable. They're terrible.
Tumblr media
Thank you for reading if you did, i'm always happy to talk recommendations and stuff if you want them so feel free to do that if you want to!
why did i do this

Okay you all really liked both my Monster High costume re-design(?) and my Ever After High costume proposal, soeh... I'll just keep going! I refuse the connection of Winx and Netflix' Winx Saga, so I made some costume proposals for a show that would actually be just loosely faithful to the cartoon show. Enjoy!
(This is based on the 1st and 2nd season)
Bloom
Tumblr media
I always saw Bloom as a down-to-earth (there's a joke in there somewhere, but I can't find it...) girl representing just the average teen discovering her magical abilities! I think the blue would clash on screen, so I decided to amp up the yellow accents.
I think this makes for a casual, modern Y2K-inspired outfit with trumpet-style denim pants (is that what they're called? honestly, I don't know anything about fashion), a yellow knit crop-top, yellow platform sandals, heart earrings and a heart pin, and a dark blue hair band.
Stella
Tumblr media
I'll be honest, I never liked Stella's design all that much as a kid... I feel better about it now, but I still wanted to put her in a yellow sundress instead of her two-part outfit. I added a green cardigan to keep her original color scheme, and I thought those heels with sunflowers on were just to die for!
I would love to see her with a lot of sun and moon-imagery, and I think they'd be really subtle accessories in a live-action show - a chain belt, a necklace, earrings, and perhaps a bracelet. They may look like much, but since the dress and cardigan are plain, I think it'd end up looking quite lovely!
Flora
Tumblr media
With Flora, my OG favourite, I went for a more bohemian style with a loose, knit crop-top and a ruffled, flowery pink skirt. I liked the idea of a more earthy color palette, having even the pinks muted.
I gave her flat shoes, which are more practical for gardening, and a scrunchie she could have around her wrist. I know her gardening is magical, but I just love the idea of her growing things organically too, and for that, long hair is better tied back a bit <3
Tecna
Tumblr media
This one was soooo difficult to make, because there was a risk of making her look like a young Polish boy who just discovered Adidas... I think a light purple pixi cut would look so good paired with an angular, purple crop top and checkered (striped?) green shorts. I think the triangle earrings would work so well with this!
Her shoes are bigger, and I'd imagine they'd have some tech in them, just like the green watch - they're magical, of course! But also electronic? The glasses are just for inspiration on what she might be able to conjure with her magic, that's for CGI to work out tho xD
Musa
Tumblr media
I honestly don't know if I could've made a more direct result... I don't think an IRL Musa would look good with those high pigtails, so I went for space-buns instead. The denim jeans are still baggy (why did I never notice you can see her underwear??), but I chose some that were stone-washed to give them some flair.
The top is more Chinese-inspired to make a connection to her heritage - I searched for almost an hour to find something I liked, and uh... the internet's nasty... I added a lot of musical elements, like a hairpin and a charm bracelet, since I don't really think it's obvious from her design alone that her magical connection is to music. Also, cat headphones. Because why not?
Layla/Aisha
Tumblr media
I'll be completely honest, I've never liked Layla's (and yes, I'll refer to her as Layla, that's the name I heard when I grew up with the show) outfit - on itself, it's fine, but I was so confused by her magic when she first appeared. It was waaay later that I learned she has a connection to water (I know it's not directly water-magic).
I looked at her other outfits, and I don't really think any of them did her justice. She's such a cool concept, but I don't think the creators fully knew what to do with her from the start... Anyway, that's just speculation, that's not what you're here for!
I kept her original outfit with a pink crop top, but changed the cargo skirt for shorts (that's just more practical). Of course, we keep the leg warmers; they're iconic! I also added pearl earrings, because... ocean.
Yeah, I struggled with Layla, but I think she could be a JEWEL given a re-design - also in the plot. Keep her personality and backstory, tweak the powers, and the wardrobe changes would come naturally <3

Hey Msweebyness, I got a question: What is the Theater kids aesthetics? What about the recess kids?
Well, I can’t speak for the Recess Kids, they belong to Artzy! But here are the theater kids:
Missy: Mostly punk aesthetic, she wears spikes and chains, but she mixes it with a lot of bright colors.
Jesse: Kind of casual theater kid, he wears a lot of jeans and hoodies, but his shirts usually have graphics of plays and musicals.
Ayesha: Kind of a Rainbow Brite aesthetic, tbh. She wears BRIGHT colors, with yellow being her favorite. Everything about it says “RAY OF SUNSHINE.”
Eri: Full Gothic Lolita. Black, Lace, Silk, Skirts, Parasol, gloves, the works.
Anthony: Goth Boi, he wears almost all black. Also a bit of punk in there. His signature accessory is a leather black trench coat.
Roxie: PUNK to the max. That is all.
Evie: Kind of casual Southern Belle type fashion. She wears a lot of dresses, or blouses and skirts. She also likes to wear gloves and carry a parasol.
Brecken: Country boy…but with a jock edge. Like he’ll wear running shoes and a sports jersey, but with jeans and a flannel shirt with the sleeves torn off.
Soo-Yeon: Kind of athletic, I guess. He normally wears like jeans and T-shirts, but with his basketball shoes and jacket.
Candace: Very Prep Style, but she mixes it with her cheer gear.
Dot: Kind of like Sabrina’s style tbh, but a little less femme. She prefers pants to skirts, and really likes pinstripe patterns.
Petra: Decora Kei Gal. SO much color, so many accessories.
Anais: NEEEEERD. She likes to wear geek specs. They wear sweater vests and little ties. Loafers all day. And it makes it work.
Eloise: Very sensible. A khakis girl. Polo shirts and cardigans. Durable shoes.
Parker: Big Soldier Aesthetic. Think of Axel or Brick from Total Drama. Lots of Camo and cargo stuff, big boots, dog tags. The works.
Mona: Very casual and cozy, sweats fanatic. But they also love accessories.
Aggie: Sk8r Girl. But she also amps it up with punk accessories.
Staci: Casual Athletic Style. Kinda think of Rule 63 Kim for her style. Athletic brands, sweats, etc.
Margo: Comfy-Winter-core. She wears cable knit sweaters, boots and gloves. She also loves to wear her DIY accessories.

Older, but not a bit wiser, the Hives return
Fall comes with its smell of maple in the leaves, its intimations of mortality and, this year, its share of unsettling events—war in the middle east, AI in everything and the murder of our beloved Bandcamp by capitalist privateers.  (We are not equating these things by any means.)  Like always, we turn to music, the annihilating blare of metal, the agile interplay of improvisation, the well-shaped contours of pop, depending on our individual tastes.  We hope you’ll find something to ease your own personal burden in all this as well.  Contributors include Bryon Hayes, Bill Meyer, Andrew Forell, Tim Clarke, Jonathan Shaw, Ian Mathers, Alex Johnson, Jennifer Kelly and Ray Garraty.
Due to technical issues we're posting this in two parts, so don't miss the second one.
Ad Hoc — Corpse (Shame File Music / Albert’s Basement)
Ad Hoc was a Melbourne-based improvising unit, an experimental outfit that should have higher prominence. It only took 40-plus years, but Shame File Music and Albert’s Basement are finally spearheading a reissue initiative. Last year saw the arrival of the trio’s sole release, the hypnotic Distance cassette. It disappeared the moment it became available. Corpse documents an unconventional live performance from the group. They prepared their instruments (guitars, an EMS Synthi AKS synth and tape loops) for performance prior to the arrival of the audience and then shut off their amps. When all were seated, the trio turned on the amplifiers and unfurled an aleatoric blast of sound. The resulting music is far removed from the ambient tone clusters of Distance. The first piece shimmers in a way that calls to mind Matthew Bower’s Sunroof project, while the latter piece bathes in guitar noise so thick that it may have influenced The Dead C’s The Operation of the Sonne EP. Ad Hoc have today’s noisemakers beat: Corpse presents itself with a freshness that belies its 1980 provenance.
Bryon Hayes
Axolotl — Abrasive (Souffle Continu)
The French trio Axolotl existed for a few years in the early 1980s, and it reflects the aesthetic concerns of its time. Guitarist Marc Dufourd’s playing betrays some acquaintance with the work of Derek Bailey and Henry Kaiser, and the fibrous tones and agile exchanges between reeds players Jacques Oger and Etienne Brunet recall Evan Parker. All three double on electronics, hand percussion and utterances. These accessories, in combination with the concentration of the album’s 12 tracks, give the music a truculent attitude and just-the-facts brevity that brings to mind punk and post-punk. This may be free improvisation, but it is improvised from a point of view, and it’s that informed attitude that makes the album worth visiting nearly 40 years after its original release.
Bill Meyer
Will Butler + Sister Squares — Self-Titled (Merge)
youtube
Will Butler joins with Sister Squares — multi-instrumentalists Jenny (Butler’s wife) and Julie Shore, Sara Dobbs and drummer/producer Miles Francis — for their debut album. Bouncy, heartland rock garlanded with that 1980s Fairlight and Linn drum sound mixes with touches of art rock as Butler emotes wholehearted. The influence of the 20 years Butler spent with Arcade Fire is inescapable, but it feels like the quintet have also been listening to Billy MacKenzie (“Long Grass”) and Russell Mael (“Arrow of Time”) as well as Springsteen, Mellencamp and company. “Hee Loop” sounds like a mash of Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel. The themes and emotions can be big in that Arcade Fire way that’s equal parts exhilarating and exhausting, but the album works best when the band dial down the melodramatic flourishes as on “Car Crash” and “The Window,” where Butler is right in your ear, tired, disillusioned, real. This is a record I wanted to like both more and less. For every heartfelt moment and interesting musical choice, there’s a cringe-inducing gestural overreach that makes you wince. A bit like his former band but with enough promise to persevere with.
Andrew Forell
Claire Deak — Sotto Voce (Lost Tribe Sound)
Melbourne-based composer Claire Deak’s last release on Lost Tribe Sound was 2020’s The Old Capital, a fantastic collaboration with Tony Dupé. In my Dusted review I said, “There’s so much wonderful stuff going on across these seven songs that it’s a delight to revisit.” As its title suggests, Deak’s solo debut, Sotto Voce, very much sits at the opposite end of the musical spectrum. This is subtle, minimal music that softly arises out of silence and speaks an elusive language. The background to the album’s creation is Deak’s exploration of the work of two women composers from the early baroque era, Francesca Caccini (1587–c.1645) and Barbara Strozzi (1619–1677). The dominant musical elements are strings, harp and voice, with other instruments coloring the edges of these understated, starkly beautiful compositions. Across the album’s 42 minutes the music feels, at times, to be battling the entropy of erasure, struggling to be heard amid the cacophony of these overstimulated times. For that reason alone, it’s necessary to invest your attention and listen closely. The experience is eerie and transportive.
Tim Clarke
Mike Donovan — Meets the Mighty Flashlight (Drag City)
On a musical Venn diagram showing the intersecting circles of garage rock, lo-fi, and psych, Mike Donovan has set up his sandbox. With Sic Alps he veered more noisy and lo-fi; with Peacers he favored a straight-ahead garage-rock sound. On this new record with Mike Fellows, AKA The Mighty Flashlight, Donovan steers in the direction of shambolic psychedelic-pop in the vein of the Olivia Tremor Control. (To anyone who knows and loves OTC, this is obviously a very good thing.) The splashy drums and percussion tracks feel like a gestural afterthought rather than a rhythmic backbone the songs are built around, and Donovan and Fellows steer these songs into some choppy, unexpected waters. Opener “Planet Metley” is the clearest and most successful distillation of their aesthetic, offering up a staggering range of ideas in under four minutes, stopping and starting erratically, the bass roving all over the fretboard. At the other end of the spectrum, “Laurel Lotus Dub” is the kind of experiment that sounds like it was more fun to create that it is to listen back to. Between these two extremes there’s the junkshop boogie of “A Capital Pitch,” which features the hilarious line, “Hanging out on the ramparts with some dickheads in black,” the concise drum-machine and organ instrumental “Amalgam Wagon,” and the plaintive, country-flavored “Whistledown.” Wherever Donovan roams it’s usually worth following, and Meets the Mighty Flashlight is a winning collaboration that fizzes with fun.
Tim Clarke
Everything Falls Apart — Everything Falls Apart (Totalism)
“Somn” means sleep, or more poetically death. It’s the title of six of the seven tracks from Everything Falls Apart, the self-titled album from the duo of Belgian bassist Otto Lindholm (born Cyrille de Haes) and English producer Ross Tones. Those titles (numbered six to 11) and the coda “Wonderfully Desolate” tell you only part of the story of the music the pair produce. Their conversation focuses on the nuance of the Lindholm’s double bass which Tones swathes in electronic effects, stretching notes and motifs into near drones in timbres that rise from the murk like lugubrious sentinels. This is seriously heavy music but the dynamism of the duo’s understanding and interplay distinguishes Everything Falls Apart. Whilst many of the pieces focus on stasis and decay, “Somn 9” is a desert storm with clicking percussion, almost didgeridoo like growls from the bass and screeching electronic noise. On “Somn 11”, deep bowed notes support Lindholm’s move through the registers as if shaking from fitful dreams into the morning light. “Wonderfully Desolate” is comparatively unadorned, a string quartet playing against the end times, shimmers of light through the cracks.
Andrew Forell
False Fed — Let Them Eat Fake (Neurot Recordings)
youtube
Is it accurate to call a band including members of legendary underground acts Amebix (Stig Miller), Nausea (Roy Mayorga) and Broken Bones (Jeff Janiak) a “supergroup”? It might help to note that Janiak has sung for Discharge since 2014, and Mayorga has done a couple stints as drummer for Ministry. All names to conjure with (though a few of us first encountered Mayorga as a teenager back in the 1980s Lehigh Valley hardcore scene, when he drummed for Youthquake; West Catty Playground Building forever, man). In any case, the players have pooled their talents to create this death-rocking, sorta goth, sorta post-punk record, and it’s a lot of grim, grimy fun. Most of the music is mid-tempo, grand and romantic in its gestures, but shot through with a crusty growl in the guitars and production tone. The best songs speed things up a bit; both “The Tyrant Dies” and “The Big Sleep” have compelling momentum, complementing the stakes of songs’ ideas. It's Armagideon Time, people. Here’s your soundtrack, from dudes that know.
Jonathan Shaw
Hauschka— Philanthropy (City Slang)
German composer Volker Bertelmann’s 15th album of prepared piano pieces under the name Hauschka is noticeably warmer than some of his previous works. Joined by Samuli Kosminen on percussion and electronics and cellist Laura Wiek, Hauschka continues his exploration of the rhythmic and timbral possibilities of his instrument. At times almost jaunty, there are echoes of Bertelmann’s previous experiments with melancholic atmospherics but the general tone here is welcoming and optimistic. Kosminen adds subtle effects which frame rather than obscure the piano. There’s a touch of Satie in Hauschka’s playful iconoclastic approach to the piano and his deceptively simple melodies, especially on “Loved Ones” where Wiek’s plangent cello lines sustain and decay over an allusive harmony that speaks both of innocence and experience. At the other end of the spectrum, the closing piece “Noise” builds abstract ambience from repeated piano notes, smears of cello and a quiet wash of effects as if the players are enveloped in a thick damp fog. A lovely album for both fans and newcomers.
Andrew Forell
The Hives — The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons (Disques Hives)
youtube
There are usually going to be some questions when a band comes back with a new record after over a decade, maybe especially so with an act like Swedish garage/punk flamboyants the Hives; can they match the energy of their youth? Are they still willing and able to give us the old thrills? Or have they (and this is usually asked with a small, tasteful shudder of disgust) matured? It doesn’t take very long into first single/first track “Bogus Operandi” for the concerned listener to have reason for a sigh of relief. Anyone who used to (or still does?) blast “Main Offender” or “Hate to Say I Told You So” or “Walk Idiot Walk” should feel the galvanizing charge of a true, Frankensteinian resurrection once the riff hits. And across these not-quite-32 minutes (the brevity is also a promising sign) Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist and the boys kick up exactly the kind of racket you’d want from them, with tracks like “Trapdoor Solution” and “The Bomb” savoring the kind of gleefully dumb fun they’ve always provided (with a nice sideline in some of Almqvist’s deliberately, over-the-top awful narrators on “Two Kinds of Trouble” and “What Did I Ever Do to You?”). They even continue to throw out small, satisfying variations on the classic Hives sound like the brassy swagger of “Stick Up” and the surprisingly heartfelt thrash of “Smoke & Mirrors”. They may have killed off their “sixth member,” but the Hives are otherwise in rude health.
Ian Mathers
Islet — Soft Fascination (Fire)
The Welsh psych-electronic oddballs in Islet are on their fourth full-length now but show no signs of settling down. Soft Fascination is a bonkers mash up of dance pop, art song, hip hop, noise and folk. “Euphoria” floats a feather-light daze, a la Avey Tare, then punctures it the rat-at-tat of snare, the rifle shot rap repartee of Emma Daman Thomas. Gossamer textures of synth weave in and around the main action, snapping tight at intervals, like sails catching a hard wind. The whole thing is butterfly ephemeral with strong wires holding it up, a combination of daydream and architecture. “River Body,” if anything, tips even crazier, with its infectious sing-song, skip-rope vocals, its tootling toy keyboards, its blasts of noise and friction. And what can you make of “Sherry” which bucks and heaves and shouts out “Ay, ay, ay, ay,” like a lost Matias Aguayar cut? “Ay, ay, ay, ay,” indeed.
Jennifer Kelly
Jute Gyte — Unus Mundus Patet (Self-released)
Unus Mundus Patet is not the most dissonant or challenging record Adam Kalmbach has released during his 20-plus-year run under the Jute Gyte moniker. But neither is this black metal for the kvlt trve believers or for the hipster-adjacent sets, be they transcendental or ecstatic or blackgazy. The songs twist and turn in on themselves, always clear in their expressions of complex musical ideas, and also — somehow, someway — listenable and enjoyable. Avant-garde? Sure thing, and likely a much more authentic iteration of that phrase’s meaning than the music many other metal bands churn out under cover of high-minded beard stroking. See the by-turns undulating and fragmenting “Killing a Sword” or the trudging, vertiginous and then utterly thrilling “Philoctetes.” Jute Gyte doesn’t make music for the background, but if you can give these songs your full attention, you’ll be rewarded. Turn it up and open the portal into somewhere much weirder and more marvelous.
Jonathan Shaw
Danny Kamins / Chris Alford / Charles Pagano — The Secret Stop (Musical Eschatology)
Free improvisation may be a little sparser on the ground in the southern USA than it is in Chicago or New York, but The Secret Stop affirms the vigor of those who participate. Guitarist Chris Alford and drummer Charles Pagano play in New Orleans, and Danny Kamins is a saxophonist from Texas; this encounter took place in the Crescent City. As even players in places like the aforementioned northern cities or London will affirm, travel comes with this territory. Their interactions display a capacity to sustain balance when the energy is high and to back off when doing so will transform the music’s tension. Kamins intersperses long, coarse tones with emphatic pops, and Alford evidences a fluent stutter that suggests he’s spent a lot of time studying James “Blood” Ulmer’s sound grammar. Pagano’s cymbal sizzle and mutating not-quite-patterns provide both forward momentum and a framework within which the action occurs.

MIKE \ Wiki \ The Alchemist — Faith Is a Rock (ALC)
youtube
The long awaited collaboration between The Alchemist and MIKE took a sudden turn when they took on board another New York rapper Wiki who steals the show here. Both Wiki and MIKE were outcasts recording music in the vein of Earl Sweatshirt, even though MIKE was always a better version of Earl with only possibly a tenth of his fame. Knowing no rest, The Alchemist (that is his fourth collab this year) takes both MCs way out of their comfort zone, refusing to pander to the needs. MIKE and Wiki have to deal with The Alchemist’s fast and thick layered production, and it works for all of them. “Mayors A Cop” is a standout here, and Faith Is a Rock is one strong contender for the tape of the year.
Ray Garraty
Camila Nebbia — Una Ofrenda A La Ausencía (Relative Pitch)
The title translates as An Offering To Absence, which of course raises the question, what’s missing? Camila Nebbia is a multidisciplinary artist who grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but has seems to have spent a fair chunk of time moving around Europe in recent years, and is currently based in Berlin. She has a sizable discography, but this correspondent has not heard most of it, so let’s just focus on the album at hand. Its 16 tracks present three facets of her work — acoustic tenor saxophone, electronically adjusted saxophone and poetry — with the first method best represented. The unaccompanied saxophone performances reveal her mastery of both weight-bearing muscularity and adroit tap-dancing on the far side of the fences that confine conventional tonality. But when she layers long tones and feedback, Nebbia becomes a one-woman orchestra transmitting heavy Penderecki vibes. The one poem included, “Dejo que me lieve” (“I let it lie”), is recited in Spanish, and no translation is offered; perhaps home is what’s not there, so she needs to manifest it creatively?

Hi Marte! How will you know if a celebrity's sexuality is being seeded to the public? Because in some cases it could be gaybaiting or it could be them expressing their sexuality without thinking much into it. This always has me stumped because I've been there plenty of times when I thought Harry's sexuality was being seeded to the gp but then he would go and do a stunt or start a new pr relationship. I thought him releasing Lights Up on national CO day was him working towards CO and there were lots of articles speculating about it too but then he went on to do the WS music vid, his most heterosexual push ever. I, and others, thought he was going to CO with MP but then Holivia happened. I think that if HL were CO anytime soon then BG would end. That would be the biggest hint. But generally speaking, and not just for HL, how would you tell the difference if the seeding of someone's sexuality is leading anywhere or it's just for attention or them expressing their selves?
Hi, anon!
I think seeding a coming out for a celebrity might look different for different celebrities, because their closets are different and their target audience might be different. But in general, changing the narrative and using tabloids and media to make people aware of said celebrity's queercoding, and highlighting inconsistencies in their het image and narrative. Combined with the celebrity being single and amping up the queercoding in the private sphere. That would be something i'd look for.
I've talked about how i think H and L's coming out would look here. I think they'll come out together, so i expect to see seeding for both of them.
I think early seeding for H would contain media dragging up old quotes of his like the "not that important" quote and H saying that his friends and family knows how he identifies. They would also probably do a "5 times Harry supported the lgbtq+ community" and show the gp how many queer friends and queer coworkers he's got. Some may start to think he's an ally, and some might start to speculate about his sexuality. They could also do a throwback to when H dated Cara (who later came out) or do an article speculating about H's motivation for taking on the role of a gay closeted policeman in MP and suggest H identified with the character. Do it pretty explicitly. Some of the women who've claimed to have dated him can publicly state that nothing ever happened between them and it was media exaggerating everything.
The gp need to be slowly made aware that H's womaniser image might hide a different side to him, and that there might be some truth to the speculation around his sexuality. I'd expect H to be publicly single when this is happening and queercoding through his clothes and accessories, have a papped lunch with Elton John, go to a pride parade or be papped coming from a gay bar or club. There will be school friends talking about H kissing boys when he was in school (it doesn’t need to be true), and ex gfs from way back saying they thought he was gay.
H hinting through his music, his artist image and stage persona wouldn't be enough. It needs to be done in the private sphere, when he's off work for people to understand it is not a selling point or queerbaiting, it's him queercoding because he's gay.

buying gear: new or used??
Some things I like to consider when buying instruments and accessories
Disclaimer; I deal mostly with guitars, basses, FX pedals, and amps. I've very little experience buying any other instruments.
used?
I'm heavily biased towards buying used gear for a number of reasons;
carbon footprint - I figure getting things second-hand means I'm not buying directly from the factory, but from someone who bought it from someone online who bought it directly from factory. I like to think that means I'm cutting fewer trees down.
informal (or less formal) economy - a lot of used gear can be found at local music shops or sites like craigslist. I generally try to avoid shopping online or buying from Guitar Center (though for some items, it's more difficult to find anywhere else) because it feels better to give money to my neighbor than to a corporation.
price point - used gear is often (though not always) cheaper than newer counterparts. the major exception that I can think of is vintage gear.
"character" - unless the piece was kept in a temperature controlled case for years on end and never used, it's likely to have collected a ding or sticker here and there. i don't go out of my way to scratch or sticker my gear (i don't like to sticker them at all, but that's personal preference), but a chip here or there is like a scar, and a reminder that objects age just as we do.
storied - used gear often has more of a story associated with them, even if that story only goes as far as "i met with some guy from craigslist in a sketchy parking lot at 9pm."
new?
All that said, though, there are some reasons one might prefer to buy a new piece of gear.
safety - you're much less likely to get mugged at Guitar Center than at sketchy parking lot at 9pm. that being said, i've never been mugged.
reliability - buying from craigslist keeps money local, but also relies on the good faith and honesty of people not bound by economic/corporate constraints. stores (including guitar center) generally have some form of quality control and regular maintenance.
wear & tear - simply put, new gear (unless it was blemished during manufacturing or transport, in which case it is usually discounted) usually lacks cosmetic wear; if you're looking for a shiny new piece, this is the way to go. moreover, certain gear components require specific skills and/or tools to repair or replace, something that is more commonly required for used gear.
parting remarks
as stated, i'm heavily biased towards buying used gear. nearly all of my gear (amps, FX pedals, and guitars) was purchased at a used music store or on craigslist. if you have any additional ideas or reasons for/against new or used, please feel free to comment and add to the discussion.

Mechanic!Mammon has been living in my head rent free ever since I saw your og posts! I love it so much.
I can just imagine him rag sticking out of his back pocket, hands dirtied with grease, and a smile on his face as he leans over the engine, wrench in hand. He's got music playing over a stereo or radio he brought outside as he hums along with the tunes as he works.
Then you come out and bring him a drink cause you know this man hasn't paid attention to how much time has passed and really needs to take a break to eat, but hydration first. And he take it, wiping the sweat off his brow with the back of his hand, leaving a streak of black grease across it and gives you the biggest smile as he grabs the glass and nearly downs the whole thing.
And you stay, watching him, handing him a tool occasionally as he works. You climb into the driver's seat and press on the brakes for him when he asks so he can check that it's working right. You toy with the car radio that he finally got wired back up correctly and make sure to save your favorite channel (and his too, if you're feeling generous) so it's all ready to go. And then dinner rolls around, so you help him put away his tools and parts and help him pull the cover over the car for the night. And just before you both enter the house again, you reach up and wipe that grease mark that's been resting on his forehead, which he gives you shit for not telling him earlier, but you just smile.
Ahhhhh, Mechanic!Mammon owns my heart and soul!!!
I'd say I'm sorry, but you seem to be enjoying it, and I'm enjoying talking/thinking about it too!
!! Yeah, because Mammon isn't afraid to get dirty with using his hands (example in Accessories in Abundance and Christmas Tree), he probably wouldn't mind getting a bit of oil and grease and whatnot on him, but my thoughts go to what he would wear. Like, an unzipped mechanic suit revealing his chesticles is hot, but he isn't exactly going to have that kinda outfit at home. Plus, his other clothes are super expensive brand-named things, so he wouldn't casually wear those. So, I've thought of something as a stand-in: baggy jeans with a tank top and an open, kinda oversized button-up shirt with the sleeves messily rolled up. Maybe he even has something to keep his hair back! Like a headband so you can see his sweaty forehead, but him having a forehead matted with wet hair is also very appreciated.
He would definitely be playing metal music or something of that variation or maybe R&B that fits the mood for working on a car and getting amped up. He would definitely be humming to the music. He would also probably hit a high and use a wrench or something as drum sticks if he's listening to metal music!
Like, just give the man a gallon of water or hell lemonade, because if I know one thing about working on cars is that people get sweaty.
I would like to think that Mammon is handy with tools because I believe canonically he works on his own car, but I find it immensely funnier if he doesn't know the technical names for all the tools besides a wrench and the standard screwdrivers and stuff. So, he's telling you he needs that tool that looks like a wrench and functions like a wrench but isn't a wrench, and you're guessing what the hell he's talking about because there are standard wrenches of various sizes and different looks. You hand him what you think he's talking about, but he'll tell you no, no, it's the one that's bigger, the one that's got little, like, teeth in the opening, it's got an adjustable piece that helps it widen or close for the bolts and nuts. It's a spanner, btw.
Lmaooo, imagine as you're sitting in the car waiting on him to tell you to tap the breaks and you accidentally hit the accelerator pedal and scare the shit out of him because the engine revs super loudly but makes a choked noise and some clanking. You both think you just choked the car to death but it was just the engine having loose parts and not having been used in a while. He fusses at you because you scared him, but you remember his face too hilarious from being startled to really listen beyond being more careful.
Mammon is covered in sweat and grease and other car liquids and kinda smells like oil, so what if he showered because Lucifer wouldn't let Mammon come strolling in as a hot, stinky mess, and you joined after he washed himself off? :3c
I already have so many AUs with Mammon but this one has main control and it's going places!

Hello again, Brian! New album is dope and on heavy, heavy repeat. So, thanks for that. Was wondering, now that we're a year out from you and the guys getting robbed, how are you liking the changes to your gear? I noticed your rig is predominantly Darkglass, do you still have the Meatsmoke? We're you able to rebuild your board with the same gear? New preferences? Thanks!
Hey y'all... big apologies for not getting through my inbox with any degree of regularity. This message is from last year, so I've obviously been slacking. Sorry! And thanks for the kind words regarding Gnosis.
Russian Circles were robbed in Chowchilla, CA back in October '21. Our box truck was parked at a hotel parking lot and we woke up in the morning to find the majority of our gear, merch, and a bunch of miscellaneous personal items gone. Personally, I lost two speaker cabinets, a synth, a MIDI keyboard, a baritone guitar, a bass, pedalboard, and a bunch of accessories (DI, strings, cables, multitools, etc). Oh... and they took a really nice pair of boots from me. Assholes.
It was an unusual tour for us because it was only a handful of shows and it was on the West Coast, so we flew out and Mike and Dave rented/borrowed a bunch of gear. I had just purchased three speaker cabs from Darkglass, so I had driven my rig down from Seattle. I was fortunate because my amps weren't stolen (they were in a beat-up cardboard box that the thieves must've missed) and I still had my Meatsmoke back in Chicago. But I had JUST bought those cabinets, so that was a very big bummer.
We were unlucky in that our gear insurance had lapsed. This was because the renewal email from the insurance company was sent to a label employee that had gotten a new job during the pandemic. However, because so much of the gear was rented/borrowed, it likely wouldn't have covered much of the loss. But we were very fortunate that fans were generous via GoFundMe and several instrument companies immediately offered to help us out (thank you Darkglass, Electrical Guitar Company, Dunlop, Fuzzrocious, and Keith McMillen). It was also a big turning point for us because Hiwatt loaned Mike a backline for the remaining shows, and Mike has never been happier with his sound now that he's playing Hiwatts.
Ever since the robbery, I've been cycling through a lot of different gear options. I was able to rebuild my pedalboard, but my new bass and baritone have slightly different sonic characteristics from the instruments that were stolen, and as a result my sound changed slightly. Most of my first shows back after the pandemic were nowhere near Chicago, which meant I didn't have access to my 8x10 and Meatsmoke. So I used the Darkglass amp and cabs for the TAAS shows, SUMAC shows, and remaining stateside RC dates in 2021 and early 2022. Russian Circles went back to Europe in Spring '22 and I rented a couple of Ampeg SVT3s for the tour just because they tend to be the amps that I'm most comfortable dialing in. I felt really confident about the sound I got in Europe... felt like it was closer to my pre-robbery sound... so I got back to the States and bought two cheap used SVT3s for our Fall tour. By the end of the tour, both amps were broken beyond repair. I finished the tour using my Meatsmoke on bass and Darkglass for synth stuff. The Meatsmoke is still an excellent amp but I'm nervous taking it on the road now that Verellen isn't making amps anymore.
My Meatsmoke and 8x10 are still in Chicago. Most of my Darkglass stuff is in LA. And since most of my musical activity this year has been in the PNW with Botch and SUMAC, I've had to cobble together a backline from borrowed stuff here in Seattle. Been using a pair of cabs that belong to Cory from Minus the Bear and have been borrowing amps from Science and Hiwatt. Both amps are fantastic. I actually bought the Science amp after recording the new SUMAC album on it, and am currently talking with Hiwatt about getting one of their DR201 amps.
So that's where I've been at with gear. If you've been wondering why every picture of my backline on Instagram is different, that's the reason.
