Shark Summer!

Hello, no comic posts today unfortunately as I am participating in art fight as well as getting my stuff in order to go on some dives, but as it is beach season I have started seeing THOSE articles popping up in the news and felt a friendly little PSA is in order! Are you worried about coming in contact with a shark in the water?  Well the only way to truly never come close to a shark in the wild is to stay out of the water, but there are some helpful tips that can prevent an accidental bite and make sure your beach experience stays safe!

1. Do not swim during the hours of dawn, dusk, and night. These are the prime hunting hours for sharks and they will be especially active.

2. Research the beach you plan on visiting and its previous history of shark sightings. Check for signs warning of high shark numbers, see if there is a certain type of shark that frequents the area or if its near important hunting spots or nurseries.

3. Avoid wearing shiny jewelry or brightly colored clothing. As nice as that fancy swimsuit and pretty bracelet is, many fish, sharks included, are attracted to shimmering metals or bright colors as it reminds them of prey items. Save it for sunbathing on the beach instead of swimming.

4. Swim in groups if possible. As ambush hunters, sharks will often search for prey that is isolated from a group. Keeping together with the crowd may feel cramped, but it tells the shark you’re not food and it will leave you be.

5. Do not swim near fishing boats, piers, or close to schools of fish or seals. Sharks are very smart animals that have learned where to frequent for a good meal. The blood from fish being cleaned and their distressed splashing is like a dinner bell for sharks, who will be on the lookout for food in those areas.

6. Do not splash around. Even if a shark has seen you are not food and moves along, its natural instinct is to approach the vibrations produced by splashing to find any prey in distress. Move as gracefully as you can without disturbing the water too much.

7. If you see a shark or feel one bump into you, do NOT panic! Panicking and splashing will confuse the shark and make it believe you are one of its prey items! Calmly distance yourself from the shark, keeping your eyes on it, and exit the water! Make sure you tell anyone else around you, or the surf guards if the beach has them, that you have spotted a shark so they can exit the water as well.

The news media may be trying to spread “Shark Panic” now that its the height of beach season, but you shouldn’t listen to their fearmongering and scare tactics meant to hook you in for a story. If you follow these simple tips, your chances of an accidental bite will be even LOWER than they already are! And please remember to leave the beaches exactly how you found them and clean up any trash or plastic that you may find during your visit! The ocean is home to thousands of amazing creatures, and you’re acting as a guest in their home whenever you visit the beach or the ocean. Please be a courteous guest and respect their home!

Túathal looks out of the small window in Robyn's berth. The full moon's shining in, bathing them both in silvery light as Robyn tends to Túathal's tail.

The full moon. That means he's been here a whole moon cycle. Stuck here, in the belly of this ship, being hurt and defiled, for a whole accursed moon cycle.

He closes his eyes as a tear trickles down his cheek. His tail hurts, there's a giant metal pin holding it to the floor, not to mention the bloody, inflamed patches where his scales have been stolen, and goddess below it's agony. It's not like every part of him doesn't hurt but his tail is the worst.

He just wants to go home.

Robyn presses gentle pressure to Túathal's tail and Túathal whimpers, biting his lip too late to stop it. The human murmurs something that he doesn't understand as Túathal's cheeks burn with humiliation at letting anyone know his pain, even just Robyn. He's a prince, he shouldn't be weak like this. Even though, somehow, he doesn't think his family would mind.

No. No, he can't think about them. Not here. But, goddess, he misses them so much.

A warm, calloused hand touches his shoulder and he opens his eyes to see Robyn peering at him through a heavily-swollen eyelid. His face and arms are mottled with bruises from trying to stop the other humans impaling Túathal a few days ago. He mouths the word "finished," and Túathal looks down to see the majority of his body swathed in off-white bandages. His injuries would heal better with more salt water rather than those, but he doesn't know how to communicate that and he appreciates Robyn trying all the same. Appreciates the human so much, likes him even, and isn't that something he never would've thought just a moon cycle ago?

Túathal doesn't resist, doesn't want to resist, as Robyn reaches out a hand and gently guides Túathal's head to rest on his shoulder.

Túathal swallows hard. All his instincts go against letting himself relax on a human but... this is Robyn. Robyn, who's been kind to him, despite the fact that it would be easier to let the other humans do as they wish. Túathal sinks his head into Robyn's shirt, wetting it with tears he can't keep in anymore. Pained, lonely tears.

Robyn's hand combs gently through his hair, detangling small knots, scratching his itching scalp, and he lets himself sink further, trying not to sob too hard and hurt his tail with the movement. Robyn murmurs soothingly, his words soft in Túathal's ear, causing a wistful ache in his heart.

A full moon is a time for wishes. As Robyn comforts Túathal, Túathal wishes desperately that he'll get to go home soon.

I can’t do that; which is why I’m asking you to. #also: a bunch of tags are surprised this isn’t ‘shopped #it’s the lighting. backlit by the sun (which is diffused through the water) but also forelit artificially #the artificial light - a flash pack or something - casts a hard shadow under the creatures arm #which normally wouldn’t be possible if backlit by the SUN; you’d see a less-hard/more-fragmented shadow above water #as light sources ‘compete’ in a sense - and since there aren’t any light sources which can outshine the literal sun #it looks a bit weird when the darkest shadow is being cast from any other origin point - which is what’s essentially happening here #I don’t know the mechanics of how light travels through water; but I know the effect is substantial even with relatively short distances #also: it’s been balanced and color corrected by the author of the photo - who made deliberate choices to bring out the full potential #so it’s not like it’s a fresh and untouched export #but the kind of ‘tacked on’ appearance of the creature is a result of the lighting conditions within the image

so in an attempt to actually use positive thinking, anytime i fuck up and my brain reacts as if ive cause a minor apocalyptic event, i compare my fuck up to the 4 minute fuck up committed by the crew of the uss william d porter.

and only today, as i was having to explain what happened to my mom when i was explaining the whole comparison thing, did i realise that most people dont know about it and ive decided that needs to change because its objectively hilarious.

...which is a weird thing to say about an event that occured on a warship in 1943, specifically november 14th.

see the uss william d porter was a fletcher-class destroyer but you dont need to know what that means, just that she had guns that went bang bang and that she was escorting another ship, the uss iowa, to cairo.

while they were on their way there, they performed some gun trials like testing the anti-aircraft guns or the torpedos. and while they were running a torpedo drill, the crew of the porter managed to fire a live torpedo straight at the iowa which you know, in terms of a list of things to do while escorting a ship, shooting a torpedo at them is not on that list.

especially if the president of the united states is on board.

yeah so fdr was on board and the gun trials were actually his idea, and part of the trials was that they were conducted under radio silence.

and that means the crew of the porter couldnt just call the iowa to be like "move out the way, we accidentally shot a torpedo at you."

but they did have signal lamps and you know, the signalman on board was trained to signal this exact kind of message.

...and uh never mind, the signalman did manage to successfully tell the iowa that a torpedo was coming toward them but wasnt as successful when it came to the direction the torpedo was coming from.

not all hope is lost though because the signalman could still use the signal lamp to correct his previous mistake and-, never mind, he announced that the porter was reversing, which she wasnt.

yeah so at catastrophic mistake number 3, they broke radio silence to warn the iowa and she managed to turn out of the way just in time which meant no one got hurt. and even though the inquiry into the incident led to chief torpedoman (fantastic job title btw) lawton dawson being sentences to hard labour, fdr intervened and waved away his sentence, saying it was all an accident.

but yeah, so thats my new measure for "how much did i really fuck up?" and when i compared accidentally picking up a pencil case without a tag on it in wilko, turns out it was a very minor fuck-up. yes, the cashier had to ask another worker to grab a duplicate so they could scan the barcode, but i didnt nearly kill the president during wartime via accidental friendly fire

Book 2 au: sparring sessions and short hair katara

They like to have sparring sessions in order to keep their bending skills sharp. They allow themselves to go all out and not hold back at all cause they know if anyone got hurt, Katara could just heal them
