Okay so just to clear the air on something that I get asked a lot about. I don't care too much about RWBY's canon post Volume 3.

Not because I think it's bad or don't agree with things that happened. But simply put because Monty Died, as far as I'm concerned like Beserk, H.O.T.D. or Kaze No Stingma what the creator says is law and without them what they left in the facts I'll choose to uphold.

Anything that comes afterwords just doesn't hold the same weight to me. Will I still use stuff established after his canon? Sure, I love Jaune's semblance and plenty of characters are amazing post Vol 3.

But that's the thing I choose what I want to use, Vol 4-9 are made by people without Monty overseeing it and because of that I care about as much for their legitimacy as I do any Fanfiction or comic I read.

So yeah, don't send me ask saying how I can't do this or that because 'That's not canon', 'Said Girl/ Guy likes other Girl/ Guy, or the book says this or that... I don't care, won't care and am not obligated to care.

I use what I want and honestly I like the series more for that because it means I can ignore what I dislike whether it be plot holes, retcons or choices the characters make.

As far as I'm concerned Vol 9 will have no more legitimacy then the DC Crossover movie coming up or any half decent Fanfiction. The only difference is two are fueled with the intent to make money while the third is a labor of love.

Post Ep: nowhere near as offensive as what I was expecting but holy exposition dump Batman

Noticing this one is 26 minutes long as opposed to last ep’s 16. Thank fuck, I was genuinely worried the finale was going to be bite sized

Having this flashback right after the numerous cliffhangers of the last episode is really strange. Unless this is something Ruby is seeing after touching the axe, then this should not be front and center

Is Summer’s hair even long enough to pull off that rose knot? As the y/n protagonist always throwing their hair in a messy bun, I’m no expert on hairstyles, but every time I’ve seen a hair design like that, it’s always been with hair down to the shoulder blades at least

What the hell is that line “I always prefer discretion”? It sounds so unnatural coming from these people and that awkward chuckle afterword cringed my spine into a pretzel. This couple with a child and possible marriage feel like awkward dates at the prom

Why are the mouth animations for smiles this season so damn weird? I wouldn’t be surprised if the animators forgot what a smile looks like considering their circumstances Also does Raven look off to anyone else? I can’t put my finger on it but it’s not quite the same as her V5 model Also also, this makes it really fucking stupid that Yang’s original purpose to finding Raven was to get information on Summer and IT WAS NEVER FOLLOWED THROUGH

Feels stupid cheap to have Ruby choose herself because of a thing her mom said while she was asleep a decade ago instead of Ruby actually going through options and debating until she realizes that she can’t/doesn’t want to be anyone else Like. Nothing really happened to make her switch from suicidal to accepting? She saw a flashback, had a vague conversation with the blacksmith, and looked at some weapons. Where is the development? Why is she suddenly okay with being Ruby Rose again when five minutes ago she drank the tea? The biggest thing so far is the flashback, but that’s stupid. Her mother’s impact should NOT be that great considering she a) hasn’t been around for the majority of Ruby’s life, therefore the only tie between them is blood relations and b) was JUST revealed to have left the family willingly for secret reasons

The music is dope though. Red Like Roses has always been one of my favorites

The “We Love Ruby! <3″ lines delivered one by one is so damn awkward. Is this an after school special? Weren’t these the exact kinds of lines that Weiss said LAST EPISODE were unhelpful to Ruby due to the pressure they inadvertently put on her?

Once again, I am asking what the fuck the Neojabbers are since her semblance is MIRROR ILLUSIONS not PHYSICAL TRANSFORMATION. Like, glad that even the heroes are horrified by someone being eaten alive, but it still doesn’t make any sense Also what’s going to happen to Wonderland without Curious as its monitor or whatever? How are the folks who can’t reach the tree without help going to ascend? Is this a good thing or is it going to send Wonderland into an unbalanced nightmare?

“[Neo] will find herself.” Uh huh. Sure MKEK. That’s the reason Neo’s staying in Wonderland instead of charging after Cinder with the force of a thousand suns. Y’all really dragged my dead gay son into this mess for this horseshit

I genuinely am uncomfortable at this reunion. Ruby’s incredibly emotional but Somewhat is just kinda there. Reminds me way too much of meeting someone who knew me as a kid and get way too intimate because of that (it happened a lot since my grams raised like. half the town back in the day) Did they really just throw this in to throw it in? What’s the point of this deeply creepy scene other than answering the question of “what happened to Little?”

So the gods were originally Afterans? “The tree’s earliest blossoms.” That raises so many fucking questions: how did Remnant come to be if it’s an entirely separate dimension(?) from Wonderland? What connects the two? Are the entities in the relics Afterans as well? If so, are they in the relics willingly? Were they created by the brothers or the tree? Does this make the tree the source of all life as they know it? What powers the tree? If Wonderland goes to shit, will that affect Remnant and any other playgrounds the brothers or other gods might have made?

These mfs really using Mr Monty’s words to justify their shitty god tier writing?

Why did the brothers build modern human houses for the animal creatures instead of creature specific housing (a dam for beavers, a nest for birds, etc)? This seems to be early stages of life so I don’t think you need to delve straight into Craftsman architecture

The jabber origin is so dumb. These idiot brothers tried to design a lawnmower and made Jason Voorhees Also, that doesn’t even make sense. Wonderland is a self contained ecosystem where all energy essentially gets recycled. The jabber disrupts that by permanently ending whoever it gets its chompers on. This would make more sense if we saw new life coming in, but so far it seems like all the tree creations happened back in the day and everything now is a brother creation. Since we’ve yet to see any evidence of their return, this means that there is a finite amount of life in Wonderland, meaning that the jabber, given enough time, could end all life within because it has no other purpose and no counterbalancing force Though, since Neo killed(?) the jabber, does this mean there is no force working for or against the living in Wonderland? Seriously, what the fuck is going to happen here?

“True balance requires only love and the patience to see things through to the end.” Tell me you’re begging for a v10 greenlight without telling me you’re begging for a v10 greenlight That’s not even remotely true because balance, especially among the sentient, requires EFFORT and COOPERATION. Or did y’all already forget your “trust in love” season got people murdered?

And yeah jaune has definitely gone nuts, his outburst confirms that.

And neo attacks, and i feel like something was cut there from what Wiess said but oh well, fight scene is awesome.

And then the problem.

That clock of crescent rose was so juxtaposed I love it.

well power upgrade confirmed.

But that fight was great, my favorite this season. Every beat was matched, each character got enough time, we saw some crazy combos, and Wiess got yeeted like team rocket. Not having ruby in the action leaves a lot of room for other stuff, kinda like it from a visual standpoint.

So ruby's PTSD: yeah that's a thing. And 

And jaunes scream and ensuing breakdown. 

Ruby's losing it yeaaaaah.

This outburst into everyone's faces, i think we're seeing what should have happened in apathy way back in V6. But it's a little strange ruby's just been playing off the bees, after her comment earlier. But then jaunes Talkback, like he's not wrong and i think it's okay he's treating her on more his level, like he's obviously way older than them now, but he's not matured at all, he still sees them as his equals deep down, and he still goes for her, even if he does apologize afterwords.

But let's break that down; Lindsay did a great job btw.

So she goes straight to Wiess, with Jaune and home, then the bees, and the rebuttal from jaunes the height difference the framing of the tears.

Ruby yooooo. 

The shut up, the deeper voice,

The look on everyone's face, blakes ears God it's a good scene. 

And then she flipping flies out.

And the sinking paper in the background.

The concept art for this one looks amazing, this was a really cool location and as much as the paper pleasers were short lived, they funny enough filled Their place in the exposition, and the integration of tales of ever-after stuff Is welcomed.

I disliked DC X rwby

Now before you get your torches and pitchforks, let me explain, the story is fine, the fights were good.

I fucking hated the bullshit "characters that don't follow the verses they are in rules get changed" trope.

They fucking made Blake MORE USELESS, same with Weiss, AND THEY FUCKING MADE YANG USELESS, YOU MAKE THE TANK USELESS. Ruby... honestly she's one of the only 2 that got a buff with the power change, which I hate, her little, shoosh becoming a TELEPORT. the other one that got a buff was Batman, bro got powers, *Batman kinda needed the edge*

BUT THEY HOED THE REST OF THE LEAGUE FUCKING HELL.

Which leads me to this

Whatever trope dictates the nerfing and Buffing of characters according to the verse, STOP USING IT. IT PEAKED IN GODFORSAKEN EQUESTRIA GIRLS AND IT BECAME SHIT AFTERWORDS.

I don't even know it's name, But I HATE IT, ITS DUMB, ITS FUCKING DESTORYS CHARACTER'S MAKING THEM USELESS OR BROKEN(NO MIDDLE GROUND) AND SOMETIMES THE STORIES THAT TROUPE MAKES SUCKS

Its funny, I'm not as into rvb as I used to be (not very much at all rn), but my favorite character from this new fixation of mine is clearly antagonistic, yet still a friend/the best friend of the MC of 6 of the games... I think the changed me a bit... You can't stan Gene and be the same afterwords

Its definitely changed me, im wayy less concerned about what characters I like and what is technically morally right or wrong in fiction (to a degree, there's still some stuff I disagree with in fiction), ive just really learned to love evil characters, not even just "morally grey" ones, fully evil, totally despicable characters. (*cough* Felix *cough*)

And sometimes I even sympathise with them or think about how fun it would be if they were "redeemed", and Idc at all if thats "problematic" 😌

Also I care way less about hurting people's feelings with it, especially when it comes to female characters, like with cinder in rwby I used to be like "I guess its understandable if you dont like cinder but personally I like her" but with South for example im just like "actually if you hate South ur wrong" bc why not lmao

And I think its a good thing, to be honest! Why not enjoy all the characters in a show? Why not indulge in an evil or morally grey character? Its all just fun and games 😊

I am sorry, but none of the ideas Whiterose shippers bring up matches the facts brought on table by Nuts and Dolts in these past few seasons, and despite this clear advantage over the other ship, Nuts and Dolts still died. Which means that if Penny and Ruby barely walked, then Whiterose never even got up. It's been such a long time, lets stop pretending RWBY wants to give the main protagonist any sort of romance. I don't mean to be rude either, but its discouraging to see people bait themselves like this and then blaim the crew when crwby said it themselves that Whiterose is non romantic in canon. Please, lets just accept it in a healthy manner and move on. Nuts and Dolts was always more solid and deep and had a lot of focus compared to Whiterose, and yet, it looks like RWBY just wants to keep the protagonist single. It's clear at this point.

*deep sigh* Look dude I get that you think that Whiterose is dead or doesn't make sense but you don't need to keep repeating the same points and ignoring any points brought up, there's a lot going for Whiterose, they literally follow the main ship checklist to the T excluding having a song.

First designs shared a color? Check. 

Teammates? Check. 

Cause major character growth in each other? Checked even more then any other main ship between RWBY and JNPR, Weiss is a completely different person now thanks to Ruby and their friends. 

Consistently having each others colors/complementary colors in their designs with one or two exceptions and/or when symbolically it makes sense that they wouldn't have the partners color? (for example V4-5 Weiss who then got a red scarf out of nowhere when she was fully reunited with Ruby and was with her a whole volume or in early volumes where Ruby had no white in her pallet because she and Weiss weren’t friends yet) Check. 

Compared to other Cannon ships? CHECK. 

I don't know how many times I can explain that Whiterose is and always has been planned without pulling up the entire show for examples. So much of Volume 1 was dedicated to their relationship and the amount we’ve gotten afterwords is nothing to sneeze at. Having another ship in mind can make you not see (or not want to see) where romantic moments could lie, for example I didn’t seriously ship Nuts and Dolts until Volume 7 because I hadn’t entertained the idea, then Penny was back and I was realizing all the points earlier on where that could definitely be romantic, or how, to use another RT show, in Gen:Lock I was 100% behind Yas x Valentina until someone went ‘hey that moment with kazu and val was kinda romantic’ and it made me realize oh that was also a possibility and I love it

To get back on track kind of, I’m trying really hard to be patient and civil but after how much bashing I’ve gotten just all over the dang place from pretty much every ‘ships ruby with someone else’ part of the fandom under the sun (that one roseg@rden shipper who sent me anon death threats that i didn’t post because DUH i’m talking about you specifically, you know who you are, please fuck off) and I’m just tired at this point of having to defend the ship I love over and over and over again.

I shouldn’t have to drop everything to say the exact same thing over and over again to different people.

any thoughts on better ways to handle Ironwood's antagonist arc? ik the roots of the problems run really deep, but i was just wondering if you had ideas on how that sort of story could be done well

Hey anon! I’ve actually had a lot of trouble with this ask because aus I’ve played with generally really go VERY different from the show and I wanted to keep this fairly similar to the show. I also realized James wasn’t super antagonistic towards the mains in this but I also realized they are still working against each other so I say it works lolz.

That’s a difficult question for a LOT of reasons. I suppose the antagonist arc and how I would handle it vastly depends on how it would end. Would it end with him as a good guy? Someone who goes to far but redeems himself? Goes full dark and full evil? Cuz depending on which version that would change how I would respond to this.

Personally I prefer somewhere remaining in the good spectrum (though any other ending is valid lolz I’m just emotionally burnt out and need happy endings in my media).

Now how I personally would have handled Volume 8 would be still fairly different then the show. We got a set up for a morally complex arc and I wanted that damn it. Ironwood could still order the arrest of RWBY but instead of everyone fighting Weiss and Yang hesitate (in this version Yang gets close to Ironwood when she goes to him when she has issues with her own prosthetics and he’s able to help her deal with phantom pains and such). They don’t agree with what he’s doing but they also don’t think fighting is the way to go and want to try and resolve this peacefully. They reluctantly fight the ace Ops because that’s what their team is doing but afterwords they argue with Ruby, they question if fighting Ironwood like this really is the best action. Eventually they break off from the team along with Ren to talk to Ironwood and desperately try and figure out another way to do this.

Ironwood would also arrest them council when they try and argue about him declaring Martial Law saying he has to do this to save as many people as he could from Salem and once they’re safe they can do whatever they wanted he didn’t care as long as everyone was safe.

When they find Ironwood they try and talk to him to see if their is anything they can do to evacuate everyone but Mettle has kicked in and James says their isn’t and asks if they have a plan and Yang and the others get really awkward as James continues and tears into them for not telling him sooner about Salem and that if he had known she was immortal maybe he could have done something and prepared for something like this. This would cause further riffs in the group as they start to feel guilty for what they did and how their actions caused things to get bad. (Also I would have had Blake and Nora tell Robyn about the tower). Maybe they go back to talk to Ruby to make her see reason and try and work with Ironwood as Mantel is currently being invaded with Grimm.

When Ruby finds out Yang talked to Ironwood she is pissed and feels betrayed. Why would her sister go to Ironwood, he’s abandoning everyone. Yang agreed but thinks that fighting Ironwood isn’t helping anyone and they need to work together to fight Salem and save people. At this point both Ironwood and Ruby both are refusing to see reason and try talking, insisting on doing things their way to save everyone. James because he thinks believing they can save everyone is naive and Ruby because she still has faith they can’t and hasn’t been hardened by the war.

After Oscar blows up the whale, both sides realize maybe they actually have a chance to work together and get away before Salem reforms. Weiss suggests using SDC ships to help evacuate people while they have time but Grimm attack the ships and James reluctantly doesn’t send ships to help because he has so few left that are currently defending Mantle and his men.

Now in the interest of keeping things at least somewhat similar to the show, the girls are angry at James for not helping the ships but he tells them he couldn’t help the ships and questions how they can evacuate everyone and should just leave but RWBY then comes up with the plan to use the staff to get everyone onto Atlas then to have them take Atlas and leave once everyone is evacuated. Possibly they even steal the staff to make it happen behind James’s back and he maybe even fights them to try and get it back, only stopping when he realizes the plan is working.

How things go from here could be however dark you want either Cinder gets the staff and everyone is killed or they get away but the girls still fall in trying to defend everyone and James reluctantly takes Atlas away when he finds out about Cinder to help save everyone and Qrow could be pissed.

These are just very broad cliff notes but basically I wouldn’t have James go full on cartoon villain but instead focusing on doing what he can do to save those he can while the girls try and save everyone and their actions directly go against each other and have them wind up working together to help everyone escape.

Personally I have an AU I call the Amity Tower Au I really prefer playing around in anyways and if anyone is curious and doesn’t want to read the massive thread between me and @why-i-hate-rwby-now I’d be happy to summarize the ideas in it but I wanted to explore a tighter version of the original script and see how it could be fixed. Sorry again for the delay in this anon it was surprisingly harder then I thought it would be.

Ruby: It's not like we can get married...

Glynda: All of you, no. But it can still be serious.

Yang: This is the first time in my life I've been serious about anything other than Ruby.

Yang: *looks around between the other girls*

Yang: I... think I speak for everyone here, but... we are not going to let this end.

Ruby and Weiss: *shyly nod*

Pyrrha: *blushes, stepping two inches towards Jaune*

Blake: *nods*

Glynda: In that case, I will advise you to cherish each other. If this relationship is this serious, will you be wanting to maintain separate quarters?

Yang: Wait...

Weiss: Are you saying you would allow us to... co... cohabitate?..

Glynda: As I said for serious relationships, cohabitation is expected. Team unity will be maintained, assuming that Mr. Ren and Ms. Valkyrie are supportive of this.

Your love for Salem is so strong RWBY stuff shows up in my youtube recomended even though the only place I pay attention to it is from you, I'm honestly quite impressed.

jks aside, Salem as a character is pretty complicated and complex - like her origins are pretty upsetting, being locked in a tower until a prince came along to help her - and for said prince to die suddenly. What did Salem do? She wanted him back because she can’t stand the idea being alone, she’s been so alone and having someone like Ozma be the first person to be there for her - completely altered her world.

Then uuh I won’t go too deep into spoilers but the Gxds of Darkness and Light FUCKED UP BIG TIME.

Like- I’m sorry you don’t PUNISH A WOMAN WHO NEVER GOT THE CHANCE OF FREEDOM BY CURSING HER WITH IMMORTALITY. I’m sorry they fucked that part up and honestly what happened afterwords is understandable and while it was a little extreme on Salem’s part IT MADE SENSE.

I get that Salem is slowly turning into the thing she never wanted to be but that’s PURELY because NO ONE LENT HER A HAND. Any one who did - ended up turning their back on her or died.

And honestly it makes a lot of sense why she’s doing what she’s doing in the show. I don’t agree with it but I fully understand it - Hell I’d probably do the same thing in her position anyways. Part of me hopes that when the gxds of Darkness and Light come back that Salem kicks their butt cause they deserve it and also they misunderstand humans need to be flawed... to you know be human.

I have yet to see Volume 7 & 8 and that’s because Rooster Teeth took down their episodes from YouTube (apparently?) and there’s no way I’m going to pay a subscription JUST to watch the episodes. But from what I see Vol 7 & 8 build on Salem’s motivations and just add more scenes with her.

But I’ll be honest I am surprised that my love and adoration for Salem goes so far to affect your YouTube algorithm- like wow the power of love truly DOES transcend technology and space-time.

RWBY X-MEN AU: Maria

Because damn it I have to include her.

Maria’s powers are Reality Warping (basically what I have made silver eyes). She came into her powers early in her life (early teens) and used them to fight the Nazis during WW2. She became a legend, The Grim Reaper, fighting fascists along side the likes of the Invaders and such.

Post WW2 she dedicated herself to hunting the fascists remnant for years until an incident involving a mad scientist and a mutant cult caused her powers to be crippled.

She went into hiding afterwords, until she heard of Cinder’s invasion of the Xavier mansion via the news and learned of a child with powers similar to her own (Ruby).

She journeyed to Westchester and found RWBY, and after proving that she had similar powers to Ruby, was brought on to mentor Ruby.

YO MAN DREAM TIME

THIS DREAM HAS CHAPTERS Y O

So first off, I was in Voltron. And this was a continuation of another dream I’ve had before??? So we all returned to Earth and for some reason, we all slept at my grandmother’s house. I remember waking up and looking for Allura but I couldn’t find her? As I kinda went about my day I kept going like “oh yeah how has it been here since we were MISSING for MONTHS and came back FROM SPACE with LITERAL ALIENS”. kinda passive aggressive, dont you think, dream me?

Aaaanyway I wanted to show some people (I probably knew them in the dream but I cant remember) the literal aliens. They weren’t excited about some purple skinned dude (lotor) but then I was like “you’ll like allura. she’s not purple and super pretty). 

Then, for some reason, it changed to winx club?? Idk but also fairly odd parents too. And I (as bloom I think) wished for this H U G E party and all. I can’t remember why. Then bloom and all the girls went to the party in their fairy forms. But something happened that made the guys jerks so, it was a whole disaster trying to change everything back to normal. Bloom (or me? Idk dreams are weird) was on the ground afterwords like “i really messed up....”

ANOTHER STORY LINE

I can’t remember the beginning, but I was at the beach. There were other people too. And freaking. Crona from Soul Eater was there?? Idk but I was hanging with them because friend. Anyway there was a group, and we were walking along a beach in search of freaking GIRATINA FROM POKEMON so. that’s insane. We heard it’s roar and eventually found tracks of it coming out of the ocean and walking on land.

It made the water all corrupted and stuff, so we were trying to move around it. THEN. SUDDENLY. HERE COMES GIRATINA. and it used some kind of a attack that was vertical and all. I yelled out “GUYS MOVE” and jumped out of the way. Crona freaking was thrown off and was going to go into the ocean. but man. I LUNGED to grab their foot and pulled them back up. The whole time they were really nervous and like, thinking they dont belong there. But bby u do belong ;o;

Anyway then later I was at a sleepover?? Idk but a friend and I were in bed watching I think animal planet. Crona was now a blanket for some reason, too. But like, Ragnarok was in control?? He wanted to fuck things up by like, using the blanket as an exoskeleton to move my body around? Idk but it was a damn comfortable blanket.

We were also at my grandmother’s house again for some reason? Pyrrah from RWBY was singing I guess? I sang along. It was p wild.

Aura in Ruby IS consistent, and Adam does not have a bullshit ability to strike through it

So Remember when Volume 3 went down, and people were confused about how Adam was able to stab/disarm Blake and Yang, even without a camera shot dedicated to their Aura breaking? After all, Mercury, Amber, and Pyrrha all had a clear shot of their Aura being broken to raise the stakes and hint at what comes next. But Blake and Yang didn’t, you say! Adam’s sword can ignore Aura, you say! And although Kerry has confirmed that Adam does not have this power, I will argue through the show itself to show that he does not.

First, let’s look at what we learned about Aura in each Volume.

Volume 1 tells us that Aura acts as a forcefield and heals Hunters on its own. It can be channeled through weapons, and used to project barriers (Ren vs king taijitu) or simply amplify strength. And finally, Weiss’ heavy use of her Semblance foreshadows how tiring relying on your Semblance can be. Ok, seems all well and good.

Volume 2 reinforces the ideas of volume 1 with the food fight, reminding us that anything can be a weapon with Aura channeled through it (I’ll make another post on why Hunters still use special weapons despite this fact), that the RWBY kids are scary strong, and that they can take huge hits and be fine. We further learn about new Semblance/Aura interactions with Yang, and see pretty much the full limit her Aura can take without breaking. Screw attack calculated that Yang survived 50,000 tons of force when the Mech punched her through a concrete pillar, and until later in the volume Yang carries an aura of invincibility. However, in the train fight, we learn a little more. Yang and Weiss are both knocked unconscious and thereby lose their protective Auras, and thus both have to be saved by someone else. Both are sleep deprived and fatigued from combat, so we learn that fatigue can weaken Aura. Weiss, furthermore, relies heavily on her Semblance during her fight, which leads to her Aura being weakened to the point where she is knocked out and defeated. Yang does not rely on her Aura in her fight, but Neo goads her into wasting energy before knocking her out with a fairly powerful strike. So, we’ve learned that a persons sleep levels, fatigue, use of Semblance, and other circumstances can all drain Aura. Sounds good.

Now comes Volume 3. Thanks to the tournament arc, we learn A LOT. Now, Hunter vs Hunter fights in RWBY are completely different from real world fights, because it’s all about winning the Aura battle so you can do actual damage. If Yang and Weiss fought each other without Aura, Weiss would be in incredible danger from Yang’s guns, because one hit and it’s over. Likewise, Yang would have great difficulty landing a punch, because of the range and speed of Weiss’ deadly rapier. But, because Aura exists, we get a whole different dynamic. To win the Aura battle, you have to deplete the opponent’s aura without draining yours. And thanks to the video game health bars that the tournament uses, we can get a good idea of how Aura cost works. Superstrength or speed seems to have little or no cost whatsoever, as the bars do not tick down for huge leaps or punches. Taking a hit seems to be THE MOST expensive thing you can do in a fight. Neon uses her semblance the entire fight against Yang, and after a few blocked or glancing punches are added on, she is at 50% of her Aura. Then Yang shoots her once with Ember Celica, and it knocks her clean out of the fight. If you look in every tournament fight, the only reason that the Aura bars go down is when someone gets hit, or maybe when they’re using their semblance. So not only is taking a hit expensive, it’s massively so, with only heavy Semblance use coming close. Ren’s Aura shield in Volume 1 makes sense then, because even that is less expensive than tanking the hit, although his exhaustion in episode 8 implied that using Aura like that is akin to Semblance use in cost (he and Weiss are the most exhausted, even more so than Jaune).

Then the Yang vs. Mercury fight happens. Yang doesn’t just get him to 15%, she breaks his Aura, and then later she breaks his leg with a punch because his Aura is broken. Seems different from Adam vs. Blake and Yang, right? Let’s take a closer look. First of all, we know that Aura starts recharging after it’s broken immediately, although very slowly. In the Qrow vs. Tyrian fight, Ruby, Qrow, and Tyrian all had their Auras broken by the end of it, yet they all still had their super strength and speed - showing that Aura recharges enough to serve those needs, but not to take a hit. After Yang loses her arm, we see yellow sparks from the stump. While it is a beautiful artistic way of censoring it, it could also be her broken Aura desperately trying (and failing) to heal her. 

Now, Yang breaks Mercury’s Aura with a digging punch to the solar plexus, and then lands an overhead right to his chin for good measure. Even in her anger, Yang did not shoot with those last two punches, and so Mercury does not die. But that digging punch holds the clue to what Adam did. Even though Yang landed a full-on punch to Mercury’s chin with his Aura gone, he is not cradling his head afterword. When he’s kneeling, before the illusion starts (there’s an audio cue when it starts, so what we see beforehand is true), Mercury is holding his gut - where the digging punch landed. Even though that punch was the one that broke his Aura, the punch kept going and actually knocked the wind out of Mercury. The same thing happened with Adam.

When Adam stabs Blake, there is no audio or visual cue for her Aura breaking, because the scene is focused more on the emotional trauma of the moment. And yet, the same thing is happening; The force of the stab breaks her Aura, and then continues on into her abdomen (CRWBY please show her scar). Then the same thing happens to Yang: his sword hits her bicep at an almost perpendicular angle, with all of Yang’s considerable force meeting Adam’s even more terrifying power, with both of their charge semblances backing them up. Yang’s Aura, potentially weakened by fighting and by how fired up her Semblance was, breaks, and Adam’s sword has enough remaining momentum to continue through and cut her arm off. 

And no, Adam could not have “killed her if he wanted to” in that moment. Fights aren’t equations where you plug in power levels and whoever comes out on top can do whatever they want in a fight. Fights are organic, fluid, dances of mass and power and chance, and you have to take the tiniest openings you can get. Yang was flying at Adam parallel to the ground, with her left gauntlet protecting her face, and her torso at such an angle as to make it risky and awkward for Adam to strike there. But as she rotated her body to punch, there was a split second where her upper arm would be exposed, and and Adam took it.

TL;DR Aura broken does not mean Aura deprived, strikes retain momentum after breaking through Aura, and Adam does not have a boring “ignore Aura” power.
