Cabin in the Sky (1943)

When you finally see Cabin in the Sky, I know exactly what your reaction will be. You'll be yelling at the screen saying "How is it I’m only getting to this movie now?" With an all-black cast, this musical from the forties should by all reason be a classic. Even with its heavy Christian themes and a storytelling style that you don’t see much anymore (and I’m not talking about the singing), it’s so playful and innocent it should have a much larger following than it does.

Little Joe (Eddie "Rochester" Anderson) has been trying to put away his gambling obsession with the help of his strong-willed wife, Petunia (Ethel Waters). When he is killed over a gambling debt, the angel "The General" (Kenneth Spencer) gives him one more chance to change his ways but only because he committed a single sin too many and is facing an eternity in Hell. Feeling cheated, Lucifier Jr. (The son of Satan himself, played by Rex Ingram) doubles down on his efforts to make Little Joe return to his sinful ways.

It’s hard not to think of The Wizard of Oz and It’s a Wonderful Life when viewing Cabin in the Sky. The actors who play "The General" and Lucifer Jr. also play characters in Little Joe’s life. His death at the beginning of the film is an opportunity for him to return to the real world and see how different choices could affect his life (but in this case, for the better). There’s a lot of talk about Heaven and Hell but the film is showing us its own interpretation of what one’s battle for their soul might look like rather than sticking to what the Pastor might say. It’s in black and white. It’s a musical. All of these make it feel like a movie you’ve gathered around and watched with the family dozens of times over the years. Doubly so if you're Black because of the cast, the good message and the overall tone, which is perfectly suited for every member of the family.

While the songs featured may not stick in your head long after the movie ends, they fit the story so well that taking them out would be unthinkable. They’re wonderfully playful and expertly performed. Ethel Waters, in particular, is so strong she'll make you forgive the film for cutting short Louis Armstrong’s trumpeting solo (which leaves him with only a small part as one of Lucifer Jr.’s minions). Whenever she and Eddie Anderson are together, you completely believe them as a couple. You can feel the love between them and this makes you crave a happy ending. If only Little Joe can figure himself out!

There’s an air of innocence about the whole thing, even when beautiful gold-digger Georgia Brown (Lena Horne) comes around to seduce Little Joe (what he could’ve done to ever garner her attention is a mystery so you just know she’s up to no good). Lucifer Jr.’s menacing but not all that scary and when Rex Ingram smiles, you can’t help yourself; you do too. His smile is so infectious… maybe the apple does fall far from the tree sometimes? Probably not but he’s so charismatic you kind of like him as the villain.

If certain aspects of the film feel like they’re a little bit on-the-nose, a bit much, just give the film the benefit of the doubt and keep watching. Things all come together in the end in an unexpected way… but simultaneously not. "Oh, of course!" you’ll say as the picture closes. "In this kind of movie, that’s exactly how things should go!" If it were made today, you’d call it a cheat and it is a bit in a way but it’s fine to make the choices it makes once in a while. Particularly in these older movies, it just feels right.

Cabin in the Sky is a product of its time and some of the characters might be described as broad or stereotypical but it’s just so charming you won't care. It’s fine to have a movie like this one once in a while. You could say the same thing about musicals as a whole. Its performers, songs, jovial tone and uplifting story, along with a nostalgic feel throughout make it a winner, maybe even a new favorite. (June 18, 2021)

For who could resist the charm of Audrey Hepburn, who plays Eliza Doolittle in the film version of the musical, which has its first London showing tomorrow? Certainly not the two stars shown with her in this picture. Stanley Holloway (left) and Rex Harrison, who both appear in the film with Audrey.

All three were at a Press reception in London on 19 January 1965. And later Princess Margaret and Tony Armstrong-Jones were among the guests at a party at the South Kensington home of Cecil Beaton, who designed the costumes. All the talk was of the three-hour film that cost a fortune to make. —

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is a 2009 film directed by Shawn Levy.

The film, starring Ben Stiller and Amy Adams, sequel to the film Night at the Museum, was released in cinemas on May 22, 2009 in the United States of America and in Italy. In 2014, its sequel entitled Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb was released, which once again saw Shawn Levy directing and Ben Stiller as the protagonist, alongside Robin Williams.

Two years have passed and Larry Dailey has left the Natural History Museum, where he worked as a night watchman, and entered the business world, becoming a major entrepreneur with his Dailey Devices. One day he returns to the museum driven by memories and discovers that all the wax statues will be packed up and transferred to the federal archive of the Smithsonian museum and replaced with interactive holograms. The only pieces not to leave the museum will be Teddy Roosevelt, Rex, Pharaoh Ahkmenrah and his magic board and some of the more popular characters.

The next evening Larry receives the phone call from Jedediah, the little cowboy, very scared: the capuchin mobkey Dexter, the night before, stole Ahkmenrah's table and everyone has come back to life in the Smithsonian, but they are held hostage by Ahkmenrah's evil older brother, Kahmunrah: the world's largest museum has come to life.

Larry decides to sneak into the museum archives and meets the proud and childish Kahmunrah: a series of clashes ensue in which, among others, George Armstrong Custer (who turns out to be just vain) and Amelia Earhart (ante litteram feminist) intervene.

The evil Kahmunrah then allies himself with Ivan the Terrible, Napoleon Bonaparte and Al Capone to then kidnap little Jedediah, who had facilitated Ottavio's escape from their prison, and lock him in an hourglass: in this way he forces Larry and Amelia to find the combination to be placed on the table, with which he wants to open the doors of the afterlife and unleash them on the world. Thanks to the help of a series of Einstein bobbleheads, the combination is found and the doors to the afterlife are opened from which bird demons arrive. In the meantime, Ottavio has asked for the intervention of the enormous statue of Abraham Lincoln, which sweeps away all of Kahmunrah's soldiers, who flee in panic and return to the afterlife.

Ben Stiller is Larry Dailey: Two years after the end of the first film, he abandoned his job as a night watchman at the Natural History Museum, founded the company Daley Devices and invented the Glow Flashlight along with other products. He returns to the museum and discovers that some artifacts had been moved to the federal archives of the Smithsonian museum and at this point he will have to deal with the evil pharaoh Kahmunrah.

Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt: he is Larry's best friend.

Amy Adams is Amelia Earhart: she is the wax statue of the famous pilot who flew over the Atlantic Ocean.

Hank Azaria as Kahmunrah: He is the main antagonist of the film.

Owen Wilson as Jedediah Smith: he is the main tritagonist of the film.

Steve Coogan as Gaius Octavius: The Roman general undertakes a rescue mission to free fellow cowboy Jedediah, who has been placed in an hourglass by Kahmunrah.

Mizou Peck is Sacagawea: Due to her transfer to the federal archives of the Smithsonian, she is forced to separate from her beloved Teddy Roosevelt but at the end of the final battle she returns home together with the old exhibits and sees the president again.

One of Spark's body prototypes, showing self-awareness and intelligence. She is very smart and quick-witted, well versed in electronics and programming, but lacks any high physical characteristics. In reality, he cannot move without assistance or a special wheelchair due to failure of the lower half of the body. For this reason, she spent a lot of time in the simulation because she can walk there on her own without anyone's help.
