A Surprisingly Soothing Sunrise
In which the Rito and the Hylian have another moment alone.
~~~
Revali had always rose with the sun.
He wasn't sure why, he just did. It didn't matter if he was exhausted the night before, sick with yet another cold or fever as a child, or simply wanted to sleep in, once the light hit his face, he would wake without fail.
And try as he might, he wouldn't be able to fall back asleep. By now he'd learned to accept such an odd habit, but by Medli's mercy did he want to sleep past sunrise right now.
It had been a few days since The Talk. Dalex had said his piece, and Revali believed him. Believed that he wasn't lying, at least. And he wasn't sure where to go from there. He doubted Dalex knew either.
During that time, Revali would often steal glances at the Hylian when no one was looking. Before The Talk, nothing would come of it. But now, he would catch Dalex staring right back, faded eyes (er, eye) full of an emotion Revali couldn't put a name to. Longing, maybe? The Talk had ended rather abruptly due to Revali's emotional exhaustion. There was still some things left to be said, that much was clear.
And as weird as it was to admit, it was nice to know that Revali wasn't the only one who wanted to continue The Talk.
If only either of them knew how. Then maybe things wouldn't feel so... complicated.
~
Revali could still feel Dalex's hand in his own as they left Faron Woods. He hadn't meant to hold it for so long, he just... didn't let go.
He wished it was a wing he was holding...
But he can't hold that wing anymore, can he?
"You don't have to worry about me using it anymore. The mask, I mean. I threw it away. Whoever finds it can have it, for all I care..."
Revali never worked up the nerve to say that he found it. Scooped it up from Satori Mountain before anyone else could get their grubby hands on it. He wasn't sure what would've happened if he did tell Dalex. Another look of shock, perhaps? Dalex did seem as though he was expecting the worst from their conversation.
Just like Revali himself. Believing that misery was all that awaited him in the end, and taken by surprise when it wasn't.
He looked up from the cheap stable bed he'd been lying in. The other Champions and the Princess were all sound asleep in their own beds with the exception of Daruk, who was curled in a ball with a small (for his size) blanket amusingly draped over him.
If that didn't give away that he was out cold, the snoring certainly did. Revali was surprised that everyone actually slept through that all night.
With a sigh, Revali sat up, running his hand through his crest. He wanted to just lay there and hopefully doze until the others woke, but he doubted that would work. Might as well get up and do... anything, really.
Maybe a walk would take his mind off things. Help him work up the energy he needed for the day.
As he got up to do just that, he failed to notice that one of the beds was vacant.
~
Revali told himself it would be just a walk, but in reality it felt more like a hike. Complete with a bit of climbing as he ascended to higher points of the plateau.
Sure, he could've just flown up, but for once, he didn't feel like it. Every bird has to land eventually, after all. They can't fly for eternity like a certain Divine Beast he knew.
...Wait, could Medoh fly forever? Or would she run out of... power? What the hell was even fueling Medoh in the first place? Or the other ancient technology for that matter? Maybe he should've paid more attention to Purah and Robbie's little seminars.
But then he'd be there for hours... Eh, he could just ask Medoh directly.
No, but then both Sheikah would hound him endlessly for answers. Purah never got over the fact that each Champion could literally communicate with their respective Beast...
Revali stopped beside a tree and pinched his brow. This "walk" was not helping. Instead of making him feel better, it just left him annoyed at two Sheikah scientists that weren't even here. And once again he threw himself into another mental back-and-forth. Gods, he did not need this so early in the morning.
He could just turn back...
...No. He started this, might as well see it through to the end. And by "see it through to the end," he meant "find a nice spot to watch the sunrise." Hopefully staring at a ball of light in the sky would make this nonsense in his head stop for a moment.
Just one. That's all he asks.
Stepping out from the trees, he rubbed his eyes, about to let out a yawn before immediately clamping his beak shut.
What is he doing here?!
Sitting at the edge of a pond, back turned to Revali and the water, was none other than Dalex. If it weren't for the fact that he and Revali hadn't spoken to each other since The Talk, Revali would've been convinced that the Hylian was following him around. It seemed that he also aimed to watch the sunrise, as he didn't appear to react to Revali's approach.
Not even his odd pointy ears twitched. Revali doubted that Dalex even heard anything just now.
They're still drooping...
Revali let a small amount of worry fill his chest. That dull hue that covered Dalex's entire body, even his clothes, was still there. Revali could see it, even in the warm light of the sun. His hair looked even more messy, though given the hour, Revali was willing to chalk that up to an untamed bedhead. And that weird bead thing at the end of his braid...
Gray. Revali distinctly remembered it being blue when... when...
When he was with me as the Starling.
The mere thought of him sent Revali back in time. When the two of them were sitting on a plateau much like this one, under the light of the full moon. Talking and laughing as fireflies and the occasional fairy gathered around them.
Back then, Revali felt...
Like he could say anything, feel anything. Like he had a real friend for the first time ever. A kindred spirit, in more ways than one.
What a lovely night that was. He missed those nights. He missed his friend.
He's right there, isn't he? The logical part of him asked. You made your choice. You decided that he was not some heartless liar that used you like a toy. If you want your friend that badly, what are you waiting for?
He hated how that part of him had a point. But... it was still different.
How?
It... it just is, okay?! He can't just go up to Dalex and say hi anymore!
And why not?
...Wait a minute. That tone...
...Medoh, is that you?
...What a shame. You caught me. There were no traces of guilt or resignation whatsoever from the Divine Beast.
Revali bit back the urge to growl. He was not in the mood for this. What do you want, Medoh?
A wonderful question, my Champion. I want you to go speak to your friend.
...We're not friends. Revali felt his throat tighten. Not anymore...
And who is the liar now, I wonder? Medoh chided, a hint of smugness in her voice.
Don't give me that, Medoh. It's complicated, you know this!!
It is only complicated because you are actively making it complicated.
Revali nearly squawked. I'M making it hard?! How?!
By not talking, you fool. Revali imagined Medoh shaking her head, You did well in Faron Woods, but you have not spoken to him since. I know you wish to speak with him again, do not try to deny it.
Damned Beast, reading his mind. Who knew that ancient technology could be so unbelievably nosy?
I heard that.
Oh, I know you did. Revali pouted, crossing his wings.
Revali... Medoh sighed, You cannot dance around him forever. Surely you realize this.
Don't pin all the blame on me, Medoh. He hasn't made any move to speak either.
Based on my observations, he likely will not speak to you until you have given him permission to do so.
Wha- Permission?? What are you talking about?
Think about it. Even after you had stopped avoiding him, he made no move to speak to you until you asked for a meeting in Faron Woods. He had plenty of opportunities to approach you, but he did not. Even after your talk, he has yet to say anything else, but he keeps looking at you the same way you have been looking at him. My best hypothesis? He is waiting for you to make the first move once again. You are the one that had been hurt, after all.
That...
Revali's crest drooped. He... hadn't thought about that, actually...
You... you think he's just been giving me space?
I do. Would you not do the same if your roles were reversed?
...
No need to answer. I know you're conscientious enough to do so.
I... still can't just walk up to him like that, Medoh. I don't even know if that's... okay.
...'Okay'? Medoh echoed with a confused trill, Why would it not be?
After everything that's happened? Do you honestly believe that we'll be friends again THAT easily?!
You could start to.
Revali searched his mind for a rebuttal. He couldn't find one.
I understand that you are both hurting. Your friendship likely will not be the same. But there is nothing more you can do other than go forward.
...
Tell me, Revali... what do you want?
I don't know what you-
Do you want your friend back?
...Yes. The admission made a weight lift off his shoulders. Funny, he didn't notice it until it left.
Then go get him. He is right there.
But you just said-
It will not be the same, that is true. But is that truly a bad thing?
Medoh's logic was absurd. It was bad because... because...
If things do not work out, then they do not work out. But you will not know until you try.
Gods, Medoh... why do you keep pushing me like this?
I have told you before; I want to see you happy. And you were happy with him. Just as he was happy with you.
That final note didn't make Revali's heart jump. He swears it didn't.
Remember when you first retrieved his mask? You wanted him to prove you wrong. Give him a chance.
With a heavy sigh, Revali gave in.
Fine, Medoh... you win. But if things go wrong, I'm blaming you and your incessant meddling.
I accept any and all consequences. Now stand up straight, he heard you.
...Wait, WHAT?!
Good luck, my Champion.
~
Sure enough, Dalex had turned to Revali, one ear raised to pick up the sound of him relenting to a mechanical bird. His visible eye was wide with surprise, and his whole body was tense, as though he expected an ambush.
A bit of a pointless action, considering that the sword that seals the darkness was nowhere to be seen.
"I..." Revali coughed, "Didn't expect you to be such an early riser." ...Really? The first thing he says after The Talk and that's what he comes up with?
Dalex opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out. His eyes kept flicking back and forth, as if searching for anything to stare at that wasn't Revali.
He looks ready to run. Say something, already!
"...Is this seat taken?" Revali motioned toward a spot beside Dalex. When the Hylian shook his head, Revali brushed some dirt away with a talon before sitting down, his knees barely grazing the other's.
...This felt too close. But he can't scoot away now, that'd make things even more awkward, he knew it...
He stole what felt like the millionth glance at Dalex, who still seemed to be avoiding any form of eye contact. He turned his head further away from Revali, towards one of the distant mountains instead of the rising sun.
"I... Have been meaning to talk to you for a while now."
One of Dalex's ears perked up.
"I know I ended our last talk rather... quickly. But I just..." Revali ran his wing through his crest, struggling to find his words.
"...You don't have to force yourself." Revali's feathers ruffled at the sound of the other's voice.
Dalex turned to him then, eyes glazed over with regret. "I know you don't want to see me right now. If I'd known you'd be up at this hour, I wouldn't have come up here at all."
He sounds so... defeated. Ironic, coming from Hyrule's "unbeatable" knight...
The thought sounded terribly wrong in Revali's mind.
"I'll... I'll just go-"
"No." Without thinking, Revali reached out to Dalex's shoulder, stopping the Hylian from standing. At Dalex's surprised face, Revali fumbled for more words. "I-I mean... You can stay. If you want, that is."
A dull purple eye flicked back and forth between the wing on his shoulder and Revali's face. "...Are you sure?"
"Like I said, I've been meaning to... well... you heard me." Revali's crest drooped, "...I can't keep doing this."
"Doing... what?"
"Avoiding you." Dammit, he hadn't meant to blurt that out... "I just keep thinking about what you said and-... and what you said when you were him and... and I just..." Revali sighed, covering his eyes with a wing, "...I don't want things to end like this."
Dalex didn't respond, but Revali felt a small, featherless hand touch his. Right, he hadn't let go of Dalex's shoulder...
I don't want to let go...
"...He was... you were... my best friend. And when you took the mask off that night, I just... I panicked."
You were more than just my best friend. I thought... I thought I could-
"I thought it was all one big ruse. With how guilty you looked it seemed like you were about to confess to some horrid crime, and I... I thought you were just using me."
He heard Dalex's breath hitch. Did... did something just tap his feathers?
"And I was so scared. For once in my entire life, I was scared that I was absolutely right. That you were just toying with me, that it was all some sick joke."
He felt it again. Something fell on his feathers. It was... wet?
"But then we talked in the woods and... and you said all those things."
"I started to realize it still wasn't me. Not in your eyes. Could I really count as your friend when you didn't even know who I really was?"
"You deserve a real friend. Someone that can actually speak to you without needing to hide behind a mask the whole time."
"When I realized what I was doing, I had to stop it. I was being selfish and I was hurting you and..."
"And I'm so sorry."
"If..." Revali steeled his nerves, "If I'm right, you had better tell me this instant instead of stringing..." At the feeling of more wet things hitting his wing, Revali uncovered his eyes and turned to look at the Hylian. "me... along..."
Oh. That's what that wet stuff was. Dalex was crying.
...Wait, crying?
"H-Hey-"
"I never meant for this to h-happen..." Dalex's head was down, his entire body shaking as he struggled to hold his sobs in.
Now Revali was the one silent. Of all the things that could come from this, he never expected the Hero of Hyrule to break down in tears like a child being scolded. He couldn't recall ever seeing Dalex cry like this before. Or cry at all, for that matter. When injured, all the Hylian would do was grit his teeth and bear the pain.
Even in Faron Woods he was able to keep himself together with only a few tears slipping, but now he's...
"I just- I wanted to- I-I mean I-" Dalex was nearly choking on his cries now. "I never wanted to hurt you, I swear I didn't! You don't deserve that, you never deserved that!!" He furiously rubbed his eyes, "This is what I get for being selfish..."
The way he said that word... it was dripping with venom. Like he despised the mere concept with every fiber of his being.
Like he despised himself with every fiber of his being.
"I should've just left you alone. I should've never used that damned mask. I wanted to be your friend, but all I did was hurt you!! I-" He covered his face with his hands, muffling whatever else he wanted to say.
Revali's ears strained to hear it. It sounded like another 'I'm sorry.' And another. And another.
I can't take this anymore.
His wings wrapped around Dalex before either of them could react.
Please don't cry, Starling...
The area around them was completely silent, save for the wind and Dalex's sobs. Revali made no move to release him, slowly running a wing up and down Dalex's back. The Hylian in question was shaking to his core, but eventually leaned into the embrace. Revali was sure that his scarf was getting soaked with tears now.
But he couldn't care less about a wet scarf. What he cared about was what was in his arms right in that moment.
The Hylian Champion, the Hero of Hyrule, the wielder of the sword that seals the darkness. This man went by many names, and was known from Hebra to Necluda and everywhere in between for silently bearing each and every burden that came his way. Nothing made his face rise or fall, nothing made him speak his mind, and nothing made him show signs of fear or misery.
He was said to be unbreakable. Unshakeable. Everything he did, he did it without a shred of remorse or uncertainty.
Yet here he was, crying his eyes out because of how his actions personally affected one person. Just one.
And that was enough for Revali to finally admit what he'd never thought he would:
...I was wrong.
~
No one asked any questions when they returned to the stable. Revali could tell such inquiries were on the tip of everyone's tongue, though.
He couldn't say that he blamed them. After all, it wasn't like any of them thought they'd wake up and see the Rito Champion carrying a sound asleep Hylian Champion on his back, taking slow steps as to avoid jostling his cargo.
For a moment, Revali wondered if letting Dalex literally cry himself to sleep was a good idea. But one look at the dark circles under his eye was enough to convince Revali to let the poor man rest. It was clear that Revali wasn't the only one who lost sleep over all of this...
After setting Dalex down in the bed Revali had used the previous night, he did a quick stretch, 'complaining' about how heavy the little knight was as he stepped back out into the sun. A brief moment was spent asking the stableman to leave Dalex undisturbed, even throwing a few extra rupees their way to be certain they'd do as asked.
He could feel the other Champions' eyes on him as he strapped his bow to his back. He ignored them, unleashing his Gale and taking to the skies.
The sunlight warmed his feathers, and the weight tied to his heart, while still present, felt much lighter. He flew east, searching for a suitable clearing to begin his training for the day.
A lone feather fluttered in the aftermath of Revali's Gale, drifting into the stable and landing beside the slumbering Hylian.
Said Hylian's expression was as blank as always, but his mind was more at ease than it had been in months.
A few "NPCs"
I can't say ALL of them will make an appearance in the comic, actually, but these are NPCs that are important to the Links, in one way or another, while also having a few significant design differences from canon (thus why no Linebeck or spryte lol.)
LU Pokémon AU - The Link’s Types and General LoZ Types
To preface this, this is all made up and generally not canon to the actual Pokémon universe. But humans are canonically Pokémon, so they are likely to have Pokémon types. Before we takle the Links, let’s explain how things generally work in this AU.
All humans (yes, Hylians-and Gerudos-are humans too) are generally Normal types. Occasionally, humans are able to gain a secondary type, think about those Psychic type trainers who have psychic powers. Those trainers are Normal Psychic types, and the Normal type being first is important, because if it isn’t first, then they are no longer a human. Sheikah aren’t humans, despite trying to appear so. They are Fairy Dark type, but try to-and have successfully as of BotW/TotK-pass themselves off as Normal Dark type. Dark does not always necessitate being evil.
Naturally, humans typically gain either a Psychic or Fighting secondary type, although gaining a secondary type is still very rare, and is an ability unique to humans. Zora, Rito, and Gorons can’t gain a secondary type like how humans do. Zora are Water Fighting type, Rito are Flying Fighting type, and Gorons are Rock Ground type.
To gain a secondary Psychic or Fighting type, a human must devote themselves to learning the type’s moves with the help of actual Psychic or Fighting Pokémon. It is a hard, and challenging process, and yet almost all Gerudos are naturally Normal Fighting types due to how many Gerudos in the past gained a Fighting type despite the tedious process. Urbosa and Riju are Normal Electric type. Ganon typically gains a secondary Dark type, but when he’s pig Ganon he’s mono Dark type, since he’s no longer human. Few humans can also be born with a secondary Psychic type as well, although it’s a rare occurrence.
The Zeldas are all Normal Fairy types thanks to Hylia, who was a Fairy Dragon type. Post-TotK Zelda is instead a Normal Dragon type, and was a Dragon Fairy type while in dragon form.
Now onto the main course, the Links. Here is a list of the different types the Link have and explanations for them:
Wild - Normal Ghost - After coming back to life after 100 years, he gained a secondary Ghost type. He also gained the powers of his fellow champions from their spirits, which further cemented the secondary Ghost type he has. If he didn’t gain their powers, the Ghost type would have gradually faded away and he would’ve went back to being a mono Normal type. Once the other Links learn about this, they would be very concerned.
Twilight - Normal Dark - After getting turned into a Dusk Lycanroc with the use of Twili magic, he got slapped with a permanent Dark type. His Lycanroc form is also a Rock Dark type instead of a mono Rock type because of this.
Legend - Normal - Arceus himself made sure that he stayed a mono Normal type, and that he can’t learn any moves without the use of items, this Link is powerful enough.
Hyrule - Normal Fairy - This Link is very adept at learning different moves. Just learning different move types doesn’t give you a new type however, he only got this type after learning how to transform into a fairy. Using this transformation power enough times had made the secondary type permanent.
Four - Normal Fairy - The Minish are Fairy Normal types, and instead of just shrinking down to their size, Four was able to transform into a Minish. Like with Hyrule, using this power enough times had slapped him with a permanent secondary Fairy type.
Time - Normal Fairy - I realize how many Links have this type. However, he gained this type from the incident with the Fierce Deity mask. Each of his transformation masks changes his type: Deku Mask - Grass Ghost | Zora Mask - Water Ghost | Goron Mask - Rock Ghost | Fierce Deity Mask - Fairy Ghost | You can guess why they all have a secondary Ghost type.
Warriors - Normal - He’s just some guy man. He wishes he had a secondary Fairy type, he loves fairies.
Sky - Normal - Just because he can fly with a giant bird, doesn’t mean he suddenly gets a secondary Flying type. He can’t fly by himself. He’s just some guy.
Wind - Normal - No he isn’t a Water type, but he is on his way to becoming Normal Psychic soon, even if he doesn’t really know that yet.
Here’s some other Links that are not really in LU or are not the main 9 Links:
Spirit - Normal Psychic - He didn’t die or get separated from his body like his Zelda, who is a Normal Ghost type, but he can see spirits better than the normal person, so he gets a secondary Psychic type, which he was actually born with.
First Hero - Normal Fairy - He got blessed by Hylia. That’s it.
Green, Red, Blue and Vio - They all get different secondary types because of the 4sword, with Green, Red, and Blue having Grass, Fire, and Water types respectively. This stays the same no matter who uses the blade. Vio, and any other fourth color gains a type that matches the emotion/mental state/whatever that color represents the most. So of course Vio is Normal Psychic, since he is the brains of the 4.
Ravio - Normal Psychic - Like most Lorians(is that what they’re called?), he’s Normal Psychic type, because unlike Hylians, the people of Lorule usually are born with a secondary Psychic typing. Ravio usually uses just his psychic powers to communicate with Sheerow easier. Sheerow is also a Pokémon, Flying Psychic type.
Linkle - Normal - She is very close to gaining a secondary Fighting type. With just a bit more training, she’ll finally get STAB on her Low Kicks.
Dark Link and Shadow Link - These two are different beings. Dark Links are mono Dark while Shadow Links are Dark Ghost.
That’s all I have for now, but if you have any other questions regarding this AU, please ask! I have done and am still doing a lot of world building, it’s so fun!
I keep thinking about the Batman x Danny Phantom x Legend of Zelda: BOTW crossover
Like, who do you think would cross dress to get into Garudo town? Would Danny need to wear the Rito clothing like Tim or does he keep his cold resistance/ regain it by then? < That would be interesting to have as a separate power. How many years would they be stuck in Hyrule? In my first playthrough I went nuts exploring everything the Great Plateau had to offer and I legit spent two real life months uncovering every secret I could. Do you realize how many "in game days" that was?
I'm sure Danny and Tim wouldn't spend that much time up there but they sure as heck aren't leaving anytime soon.
Speaking of anytime soon, Breath Of The Wild has a sequel coming out (Tears Of The Kingdom) and I want Tim and Danny to also go through whatever fresh hell is awaiting us there. Tim starts making or commissioning his own weapons cause he's tired of using spears that break after fifteen hits.
Speaking of using spears instead of his usual bo staff, do you think Tim would be okay killing monsters? They're pretty much demons and are pretty mindless to be honest. I know Danny would be squeamish about it at first.
How do you think they would react to Prince Sidon, Teba and the others? Ohhh, they would probably be careful to hide thier ears in this au so people don't freak out. Fae rules say to search shadows and count the teeth, but I rarely hear to check the ears.
By the time Danny and Tim get back to thier home dimensions they have at least 11 safe houses together a large arsenal of weaponry, five horses, several horse drawn wagons, futuristic tech courtesy of Tim's and Dannys combined skills, a magical tablet that Tim refuses to let out of his sight (Zelda isn't getting that back, is she?)
Another thing, I want them to have the dlc. Imaging Tim wearing Majoras Mask. Monsters are already confused by Phantom but now Tim is giving off ominous vibes too, lol.
I want Danny to rescue Tim at some point by riding on a bear and having the bear fight with him still mounted on it. It was at this moment Tim knew he was in love...and that Danny was out of his freaking mind.
I love the batfam getting protective of Tim when he returns because the guy he disappeared with all those years ago (or any amount of time you want thats to dimensional time shenanigans) gives off evil eldrich vibes. No one but Jason approves of thier relationship. Jason doesn't feel the vibes and is helping them any chance he gets. He likes Danny and thinks he and Tim are a good fit together.
I also think its hilarious if they treat Tim like Daddys little girl when in reality Tim is the top in this situation. Let Tim have top energy. He's still shorter than Danny when they grow into adults and Tim is more blushy but hes the Top.
Also I want Bruce's reaction to finding out Danny and Tim are engaged.
I have more but this post is getting long
17‼
(ask game from here)
damn shawty calm down why you yelling at me! (jk but the text is huge on my screen and it's funny kJDKFJD)
17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.
i'll talk a little bit about the fic i had planned for revalink week d1 >:] it's a prince revali x prince link au because i love royalty aus yahooo
i'm still deciding whether or not revali is going to be human/hylian and whether or not the rito people should still retain avian features or have their livelihoods and economy dependent on aviary travel and innovation, e.g. the rito people deal in the creation and distribution of paragliders, parachutes, air balloons, primitive airplanes, etc. not that i'll go in depth but i was thinking about it !
because of that, there will be a couple bird puns and shit LOL
revali's late mother the queen is named ceruli and i took her name from the species of bird, cerulean warbler
revali is the only child of the hebra royal family, because his father (kaneli) never remarried after ceruli died and thus revali has no siblings. he'd actually be a great big brother if he had any though :)
revali learned archery from his late mother, who was one of the greatest archers who ever lived. :) it's his fondest memories of before she passed, and he trains as frequently as he can, in hopes that he can one day be on par with her skill and honor her memory
link & zelda are fraternal twins and their mother also died when they were young so link n revali are on the same wavelength
zelda is older than link because she was born first, but she's the more natural born leader between her and link, who likes to take naps in the castle gardens or bake in the kitchens with the staff or something, which is why she's the heir to the throne of hyrule lol
thinking about having zelda meet mipha in the background, who has ceded her right to the throne to sidon, hence why he's also at the ball, attempting to court link because the ball is for zelda and link to find suitors
kaneli has one-sided beef with rhoam for marrying his children off for political gain because the rito people in the hebra kingdom have a strong belief in marrying for true love over status, etc.
he would have gone to the ball out of courtesy as royalty and maintain camaraderie or whatever, but knowing rhoam's ulterior motives and having a strong moral code as a rito, kaneli is now attending with spite and a plan masked under his warm and grandfatherly facade
so finally, here's an excerpt from when i was just braindumping about how i want the fic to go because i don't think it's going to make it into the fic and i liked that last sentence teehee:
"kaneli decides to kill two birds with one stone; bring revali to the hyrule birthday ball to meet prince link and have them fall in love. (1) to satisfy both revali’s wishes for strong political ties to the advantageous kingdom of hyrule and to marry for love and (2) save link from a loveless political marriage. kaneli hopes it might even kill a third bird: softening revali’s bristly personality with link’s sweetness."
Finally able to discuss this idea! So yes,
Vigilante Wind au with the rest of the chain as heroes that want to adopt him! This would be set in a Modern/Fantasy setting.
Let’s start with the main boy Wind, Wind would have grown up on a small island that the kingdom and the royal family didn’t really care about. He would have lived with his parent's Grandma and Aryll. Until a typhoon hit the island and destroyed everything. Wind was the lone survivor, because of his natural born powers that kept him safe. Before anyone from the mainland could get to him, Wind would be kidnapped by the Yiga organization. Becoming one of the experiments of a project known as project sheik and becoming number 745360. His fellow prisoner would be 7488110, a little kokiri boy whose real name is Makar, and 518110 a rito girl whose real name is Medli. Wind would become super protective of his co-prisoners and do everything he could to protect them from the scientist. Even if it means giving himself up for more experiments. Not all the people are bad though, slowly but surely he grows attached to an employee who has no idea what’s going on in the organization. A man that goes by the name  Linebeck.
Linebeck, is just really, really stupid and has no idea the children are being experiment on. He is led to believe the children just have a rare disease. Resulting in him being compassionate to the kids and developing a kinship with Wind. He finally realizes something is up when Wind is forcibly dragged to  a room, while coughing up blood. When he saw linebeck Wind would cry and call for him.  “LINEBECK PLEASE! PLEASE DON’T LET THEM HURT ME PLEASE LINEBECK! LINEBECK!” The boy's scream rang out as he was dragged through the door. The old captain, rushing towards the door. “I’m sorry sir but I can not allow you to enter.” The guard halted the man’s entrance. Linebeck did not allow that to be an answer. “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING TO MY KID!”
After that linebeck would look into what was really going on and find everything. Deciding then and there to save the kids. He get in contact with Makar, and Medli families who were still alive, and made a plan to help all three of them disappear, using an old friend of his. Only on the day of the escape, something happened. They had successfully gotten away from the building, with the help of the children's powers, only at the last minute the alarms started blaring forcing Linebeck to pick up the kids and go. Handing Rito and Kokiri back to their families and handing Wind off to his friend Jolene. He was planning on going back to the building to make him look less suspicious. Wind protested and cried because he wanted Linebeck to come with them now. In an attempt to comfort the child he took off his blue trench coat and wrapped it around his boy. Whispering “We’ll be together again soon…I promise.”
He lied.
Two years would pass since that day, and Wind would become part of a Vigilante group known as the Pirates. Composed of the Pirate Queen Jolene (Jolene), Nest their tech man (Niko), Canon their muscle (gonzo). Then Gallows & Gale, Tetra and Wind. Tetra is actually the second youngest princess of the kingdom, but became friends with wind by chance when he saved her as Gales from a assassination attempt.  If you're wondering what Gales looks like he has white hair, wears Linebeck's coat he was gifted, and a black mask that wraps completely around his face with gold paint that resembles the hero's charm on the front.  His powers of course are controlling the Winds, only because of the experiments he's incredibly unstable so he has to be careful. Sometimes because of his powers it takes the air from his lungs so he can't breath and needs an oxygen mask, and sometimes he loses control and just makes a tornado.
As for the rest of the chain.
Crimson Rider aka Sky A hero who tamed a legendary bird and now patrols the cities.  Sky is actually the main reason they realised Wind was nice. One day during a battle Crimson was falling with sky and Wind saved them using his powers.
Deity aka Time/Old man He controls time, and can somehow shapeshift. Was not always known as Deity, when he was a child he was known as the sidekick Mask. To the superhero Fierce Deity, who tragically passed. In honor of his fallen partner he took on the name Deity. One of the few Heroes who married someone who is not involved at all in the hero world or political world, but that's how he likes it.
Captain Aka Warrior  Think if Sailor moon and Captain planet and America fused. This is warrior.
Genie Aka Legend/Vet  Has 5 magical rings and 2 magical gauntlets that he can wish upon once to get any power for that day, then resets the next day. Will say he turns into a Siren a lot.
R-G Biv aka Four or Red Blue Green Vio Shadow  Shadow is considered indigo. They were five brothers who could become one or five as well as shrink. Until tragedy stuck and Indigo was killed during a battle.  Leaving only four, and none of them had the heart to remove the I from their name.
Wild Card aka Wild/Champion  He's like Ben Ten with the Shieka slate as a watch, but instead of shapeshifting he's given at random different weapons or items. Kind of similar to Legend only, absolutely no shapeshifting allowed. Outfits on the other hand. He also just can't die like literally someone shot him but his body refused to react.
White Cross aka Hyrule  He's a healer, what did you expect? He prefers to be at H.Q. but when he's forced to fight he turns into a moth fairy hybrid and acts like the hulk.
The Engineer aka Spirit (emphasis on the The) This kid is scary smart when it comes to technology. Figured out how to build a car at six. And was the one who built Wild's watch, and adds more weapons to it. Doesn't normally fight but when he does prepared to be smacked by a train.
Shaded Knight aka Twilight  Is actually Malon's younger brother. Who got dragged into this world because of Mask by accident. Yes he can shapeshift into a wolf. However he naturally had super strength, and is a beast with a crossbow.
Dang did not mean to make it this long. If you guys have any questions please feel free to ask. It helps me develop this more or if you're just confused.
Also when you imagine Linebeck please think of @smilesrobotlover when I started picturing the scene with him all I could see was how she draws him
Anyways I hope you enjoyed it and will explain more later.
ok so @m3wllo asked me about my ocs. trust me guys im not going insane tumblr cant recover deleted drafts anyways. heres the gist of what was in that before before i in the true fashion of fate deleted it:
i was originally going to make an artwork for them but i realized it was just easier to tell you about them. also i dont know how to tell yuo this but whatever ocs i couldve conceived of in the past. weeks or years are all just vague concepts in my head not fully fleshed out. abyways
so first im thinking of a mysterious shopkeeper who has pretty rare and valuable items, im talking fairies, dragon parts, the most potent ingredients for elixrs and/or food, and with totk maybe even bombs or arrows. i dont want to have them sell elixrs outright because id want that for Another shopkeeper oc who sells (you guessed it) elixrs and food. that shopkeeper would also have a feature where they make custom food based on they players/links inputs/suggestions (like the custom tunes in ACNH). as far as im aware loz doesnt have many nonhylian shopkeepers, so to break stereotyping/tropes i think this shopkeeper would be a goron. in my concept sketches i rushed of them i thought about giving them a mask like in past entries! no idea what it would do besides add to the mystery, or what mask it would be of (in the art i made it an unnamed zonai mask) but i would still like to have masks with Actual Abilities in botw, even if its a pipe dream.
so yknow how botw has champions. what if. monster champion. botw or totk doesnt have friendly monsters like in past entries (well. they have Masks for it but it doesnt let you do anything besides have them not attack you. ycant even talk to them, which is what i mean here. they cant give you items or nothing) which is a shame because it wouldve been really cool to have!! so hypothetically, what if i were to retcon that and just add friendly monsters. secret monster village near skull lake or the breach of demise. while it would be funny for the champion to be a keese or something i personally think theyd be a lynel. with totk out they could also be a gleeok or one of the boss monsters (COLDGERA CHAMPION……. COULD YOU IMAGINE). this may or may not have come from an unnamed botw au i have but shh. also speaking of which what if lynels were fused with other animals. like yknow how theyre centaurs with horse(?????) genes? what if they had goat genes, or deer genes, or any genes of an animal within That Realm of Animal? giraffe genes. CAMEL GENES FOR THE GERUDO DESERT. this also came from that au
friendly yiga ocs. i would like friendly yiga ocs. by friendly i still meant they commit violent crimes its just not murder this time (i mean. if you hc hard enough you could argue that the yiga wouldnt actually murder you, but thats besides the point and also probably not canon. but who cares about canon.) they can either be all the way from 10000 yrs back or they can be in the current age! this is partly inspired by the pirates in castle in the sky. also i would also like to have yiga ocs of different races. like we know anyone can really join as we see a hylian asking to join, and link joins and is able to learn an earthquake technique, so its not just a sheikah thing. so if anyone can join then why dont we see other races in yiga outfits like zora or rito or gorons? are they just disguising themselves to look uniform?? i dont think thats how it works but im not going to ask! but yeah zora rito and goron yiga. the gerudo May be able to get into the yiga but its hard to tell. i feel like these yiga would be on friendly terms with both the yiga and the sheikah, kind of like an buffer(?) state between two states that are at war. neutral party. also theyd be really good with sheikah tech considering 10000 yrs ago they probably worked on it while they were banished. they could help link with a weakness in the divine beasts or smth, maybe link can help them with something i dont know i havent fleshed this out yet
this has totk spoilers so i’ll strike it. so zelda in totk turns herself into a dragon. now i have opinions on this, but thats not what youre here for youre here for ocs. so three dragons exist in totk and botw: farosh, dinraal, and naydra. its debatable whether they were people at first who swallowed their secret stones or if they were created by the goddess or something (in botw it might state they were created by the goddess but im not sure!), but for this im saying they were people at first who swallowed their secret stones. im basing their races off their flight paths in botw (in totk its changed so they go into chasms, but im assuming if there was no chasms this wouldnt be their normal route yknow? for some reason it shifted no idea why. also wow is that a sentence to say). dinraal flies from akkala, to behind death mountain, into the tanagar canyon. so by the logic im employing the could be a hylian, a goron, maybe a korok?, or a rito. personally im going with a rito as i find that the most interesting considering they live in a snowy area, plus revali literally got dinraals horn as part of his trials of becoming the pilot for vah medoh (which is never mentioned in game besides when we do the trials. pain). naydra flies above the lanayru bay between zoras domain and kakariko village, as well as over the lanayru promenade, kinda like a long oval over the mountain and between the two villages. in totk it flies way closer to hateno village which is really cool symbolism for the inhabitants of that village if you ignore why they fly so close to their to begin with. anyways naydra could be a zora, a sheikah, or a hylian from hateno. honestly in my concept sketches i went for a zora but i like the idea of a hylian from hateno scaling mount lanayru in the moth unorthodox way possible. i think theyd have a bunch of colored cloths but thats off topic anyways onto farosh. farosh is the most varied, flying around lake hylia, the faron region, and surprisingly around the gerudo highlands. so farosh could be a gerudo, a hylian, or if this was Before totk i would say a zonai but. honestly im not entirely convinced the zonai/the people in faron arent the same people like. their architecture has Similarities but im really not convinced its the same architecture at All like. the ruins have more animalistic features and curves while the zonai architecture is more squareish/geometrical and theres only really Dragons present, no boars or owls. plus the lamps are different, the ruins have like standard lighting thats kinda square while the zonai have lights shaped like lotuses. it could be the ruins are just an earlier period for the zonai but like in lore they were close to Gods and descended from the heavens, with rauru and mineru being the last left on the surface. they werent originally from the surface so it couldnt have been an earlier period. and why wouldnt that architecture style stay if it Were the zonai? rauru was the king of hyrule, if the style originated from the surface then the king shouldve used it as thats where he was butbhe didnt! he wasnt even Close to faron, and the memories show the style of architecture on the islands being used for the kingdom so whats up with that? plus why wouldnt their architecture style carry over on the islands??? if it was an earlier period for the zonai that didnt originate from the surface itd be on the sky islands, and yet it isnt????? the sky islands are parts of the old hyrule, not built by the zonai who left the surface. so who built the ruins???? its possible that it was just an early concept for the zonai but nintendo scrapped it in favor for what we got, and yeah thats probably it, but im not taking that for an answer. the ruin-makers (or scrapped zonai) were either hylians (lurien village theorized to be descendants from the zonai as they can read the glyphs on the palamore ruins in botw + they have the zonai swirl mark on the houses, as well as the barbarian armour) or, if you wanted to make a theory on crack, you could say they were lynels and lynels and the current zonai-
-are related somehow (sorry the dash is because tumblr limited the words in the paragraph). this is because the barbarian armour looks a hell of a lot like a lynel’s gear, and its upgraded with lynel parts. so hypothetically. when i said i could make friendly monsters #real, this could hypothetically make lynels a viable option as a race, and as such farosh could be a lynel. so anyways :3 also in my architecture rant i forgor to mention that current day zonai architecture isnt painted or if it is barely and not with the colors past/scraped zonai use
also this is for mainly pre-cal, but zonai researchers!!!! botw only really shows zeldas fascination in the sheikah artifacts as a way to still help hyrule without her powers, but i kinda wish we got to see her geek out about other old ruins? like she goes to the ancient columns but only focuses on the shrine there, not the columns or what they mean (though. to be fair in not excited about My ancient history either. i am about other peoples ancient history though). and in totk we see her geek out about the zonai ruins, which is really great for her character!!! and considering it was a popular theory that the sheikah and the zonai worked together before totk came out i feel like either she or Someone else would be interested in it!! if zelda isnt then i would want link to be involved Somehow, as it was theorized that the sheikah represent wisdom the most and the zonai represented courage the most, and well zelda is the bearer of wisdom and studied sheikah tech, so link could theoretically be involved with the zonai somehow. (also i just want to do something with link mainly because i have the most fun playing with him like a kid plays with barbie dolls. but also i feel like zelda should have more character traits too yknow. who knows this could be a bonding experience for them). but yeah zonai researchers, distinct from sheikah researchers theyre close to losing their minds with what few data/info they have On the zonai (at least in botw). if they found a construct theyd lose their mind. theyd argue with sheikah researchers on why researching the zonai is important especially for the sheikah considering they Couldve worked together (before totk).
speaking of researchers, somebody (also pre-cal but can be after pre-cal) who studies malice, gloom, and/or monsters!! in botw they dont really know the enemy, which is kinda easy not to as calamity ganon is like a natural disaster. but i feel like they couldve tried yknow? monster extract already existed pre-cal (the recipe for monster cake in the castle), so either malice already existed then too Or somebody somehow discovered it through monsters. i feel like these researchers exist for the sole purpose to know more about ganon and why monsters specifically can get under the influence of malice (especially because in prior entires the zora were enemies too, though i dont know if its because they were under ganons influence or not, but if the zora Were under the influence at some point and got out of it during botw, itd be a good topic to research on who is and isnt vulnerable to malice)
id like ghost ocs too!! in totk we get poes but we dont have a physical form of them, and in the botw artbook we have concept art for a ghost!! plus like yknow the ruins of towns everywhere? imagine ghosts in all of them. imagine the destroyed decorations of the towns strayed about. imagine meeting aryll or links dad as a ghost. or on the brighter side imagine involved questlines with these ghosts, making recipes that were forgotten by time or retrieving something lost. GHOST ANIMALS NEAR SATORI. though i dont want to have too many ghosts tbh as, after playing totk, i have decided that i like botws emptiness compared to totk. im not joking here i swear not insane. when i say emptiness i literally mean having no side quests nothing to do just empty space. i like that about botw. i swear im fine.so anyways yeah. honestly ive been thinking more in world building terms for all of this
i dont know how to end this. welcum to my sick twisted mind
A Difficult Topic To Broach
Broach (v): To raise a sensitive or difficult subject for discussion.
In which the Rito and the Hylian have a long overdue talk.
Story's under the readmore! And it's a long one, longest I've probably ever written! Enjoy the wall of text, y'all :'D
~~~
Revali could count on one wing all the times he'd been this nervous.
His first archery competition. His first flight race. The first time another Rito showed romantic interest in him. That time he challenged his endurance by flying nonstop for several hours, followed by him crash-landing on Satori Mountain and meeting the mountain's Lord face-to-face, ending with him shrieking in pure terror as he ran away.
But this… this was something else entirely. It wasn't his pride nor his life on the line, merely his heart.
It had been several weeks since he retrieved that accursed mask from the aforementioned mountain. Several weeks of replaying everything in his head, searching for any signs of deceit or truth, and giving himself a headache from his indecisiveness. Several weeks of lying awake at night with the mask in his arms, refusing to admit that he wished the mask's owner was there with him, to have those long-winded talks he'd grown so fond of.
Several weeks of avoiding the Hylian that caused all this, either hiding out of reach on Medoh or staying out of sight as much as possible when grounded by the other Champions as a group. Daruk and Mipha ended up having Revali as both backup and a sparring partner more often, not that either of them showed any complaints. If anything, Daruk in particular was overjoyed, assuming that their normally standoffish Rito ally was finally coming out of his shell. Rather than deny it, Revali for once held his tongue, letting the loud Goron think whatever he pleased.
The proud back "pats" he could do without, though.
And Urbosa? Revali never liked it when she tried lecturing him, or gave him that look that said 'I can read you like a book.' But it seemed as though this time she was just as in dark as everyone else, only commenting on Revali's shift in behavior a few times before moving on to more important matters, like the Princess' wellbeing, along with her knight's.
Speaking of that little knight…
Revali's rage over "the incident" had mostly died down, enough for him to stomach seeing the Hylian or hearing the other man's name without sneering. The knight in question didn't seem to make any effort to seek Revali out as far as he could tell, though whether it was because of guilt or indifference remained unclear. Revali's first instinct was to assume the latter; that the other boy was back to being his unemotive, uncaring, placid-faced self after his little stunt.
But those dark circles under his eyes, the signs of neglect in his hair, his ears somehow drooping even more than they already do, the overall faded complexion he'd displayed since that fateful night…
No one would take an act that far… would they?
If he truly wished to “toy” with you as you say, would he have bothered to reveal his true self at all?
That was the question Medoh probed Revali with, one he couldn't answer. Because truthfully, he was afraid.
Afraid that everything he assumed was right. That the perfect Rito, the perfect person he was able to form a meaningful connection with, was nothing more than a wicked, heartless lie.
Just this once, he wanted to be wrong.
~~~
Asking the Hylian to meet him alone was not easy.
Something always got in the way. A new monster to fight, a Yiga ambush, the knight just not being left alone for even one damn minute. For all of Zelda's efforts to get away from her appointed knight, he always found a way to keep her in his line of sight. And when she wasn't around, someone else was. From Mipha healing his wounds, to Urbosa dragging him off for sparring or lectures or Medli knows what else, to Daruk challenging his "brother" to random tests of strength. All in an effort to "get the little guy out of his funk!" in the big lug's own words.
Regardless of his "funk" being real or not, Revali had to give the Hylian credit where it was due; enduring such a complete lack of personal space for weeks on end wasn't something just anyone could do. Not without snapping, anyway. Revali would've undoubtedly started pecking at someone or plucking his own feathers by now if he were in the Hylian's talons. Er, shoes.
Was this the reason why he only appeared as a Rito at night, then? Because that was the only free time he actually had? And he chose to spend it with—
Revali forced the faint traces of hope in his heart back down. It was too soon for things like that. That was another thing Medoh told him: to not take his first guess and run with it. The ancient bird really was trying to act like a mentor of sorts, turning this into one giant "lesson" for Revali to learn.
The timing could've been better on her end. Maybe when Revali's ability to trust others wasn't in danger, perhaps? Just throwing it out there.
Now, with all these obstacles in place, simply waiting until nightfall was obviously the correct option, right? Oh, how he wished.
Even on the nights where he wasn't too tired to think clearly, all it would take is one glance at the Hylian and Revali's nerves would fly right out the window. He gave himself excuse after excuse; it's too soon, I don't know what to say, the others will hear us, he'll humiliate me. But the topic needed to be broached, whether Revali liked it or not.
It was either that or suffer in silence forever.
So with a heavy wing and pounding heart, he reached out and grabbed the Hylian's shoulder, stopping both of them from following everyone to the Highland Stable. He ignored the way the other man nearly flinched as he leaned in from behind, his beak barely brushing against a silver-pierced ear.
"We need to talk." He whispered urgently, "Meet me in Faron Woods. Tonight."
The burgundy-haired boy hesitated before nodding, not even turning to meet Revali's eyes. In a way, Revali was grateful; he felt like he would've cracked under the stress if he had to look at those darkened purple irises again. He pulled his wing away as though he'd been burned and continued onward, leaving the knight behind.
He kept walking, even passing the princess and other Champions, eyes firmly locked on his own talons.
He didn't look back, not even when several voices called his name in concern.
~~~
Night had come much sooner than Revali would've wanted.
The sky was clear, both the stars and rising moon were in perfect view, so Revali had no need to worry about getting lost in the dark due to his damned lack of night vision. Under any other circumstance, the moonlight streaking through the trees would've been a lovely sight, but it currently failed to ease his racing mind.
As he walked (he didn't run, shut up) across Fural Plain towards the woods, Revali made the choice to wait by the entrance instead of going inside. This way, he could keep an eye out for when the man in question showed up. The last thing he wanted was to be left sitting in the woods alone like some fool.
He already made a fool of me once, no reason to let him dig the knife in.
Enough of that, Revali.
Revali nearly set off his gale in a panic. Medoh?! Gods, I told you to stop scaring me like that!!
My apologies. But my point still stands, you must stop that nonsense.
What are you talking about?
Clinging to your assumptions. You are doing it again. Medoh paused, as if sighing. And you were doing so well earlier…
Revali scoffed. I don't recall asking for your approval.
Perhaps you did not, but I will express it anyway. Medoh wasn't capable of chuckling, but Revali could practically hear it regardless. You were indeed doing well before. And it is clear that you are trying to do well now. I am glad to see that you took my words to heart.
Revali growled under his breath as he smoothed down his feathers. …Thanks.
Hm? I detect a note of… what was it again… sarcasm? Are you being sarcastic with me?
Don't give me that, you know what sarcasm is, Medoh.
Yes, yes, I am well aware. I was simply trying to calm you down with our usual banter. Medoh's tone suddenly turned to faint concern. Your mind is filled with troubled thoughts…
Revali didn't reply, his crest drooping as he looked down. He leaned against a tree and hugged himself, despite there being no chill in the air.
Are you alright?
Alright? Revali's eyes burned, How could I possibly be alright? My heart could be shattered to pieces by sunrise. How do you expect me to feel?
So you decided to confront him after all?
Aren't you literally in my head all the time?
Medoh paused again before answering, her tone switching back to that of a consultant. Revali… I understand that you are fearing the worst. But I believe that you are… how to put it… overprepared.
Revali raised a brow. What?
You have made yourself aware of the worst possible outcome. Which is, again, understandable. But in the process, you are convincing yourself that the worst result is the only one you will get. Have you forgotten what I said before?
Revali sighed. No… I haven't. But what if…
…Yes?
What if… Revali gulped, his heart picking up speed once more. What if he really is sorry? What then?
Medoh made a confused trill. I do not understand your question.
If he really was just using me, at least then I know what I'll do; hate him for all eternity, never forgive him, and never give him the time of day again. But… If he wasn't, then… Revali trailed off, reluctant to finish the thought.
I do not have the answer to that. What happens next between the two of you is for you both to decide.
Yeah… Revali sighed, I figured you wouldn't. He looked up, gazing toward the distant stable. I know he agreed to come, but…
I am not nearby, so I cannot see him. Nor can I currently see him through your eyes. But the night is young, and you left rather early.
That much was true. Revali had opted to leave for the forest as soon as he'd finished eating that evening. Everyone (minus Mipha and Daruk, who ate their own fill of fish and rocks respectively) had carrot soup this time, but sadly they weren't the godly Kakariko carrots, so he couldn't distract himself with a delicious meal. All he could do was eat quietly while the others talked, and steal glances at the Hylian when no one else was watching.
He has a name, you know.
Oh, shut it.
Yet another preparation, perhaps? Teaching yourself to stop addressing him by name in case the worst comes to pass?
Revali felt himself flush under his feathers, mostly out of anger than embarrassment over the beast's correct guess. Shut up!
You are better off waiting until after your suspicions are confirmed or denied before you try something like this. You have been refusing to call him by name for weeks now.
If he really is as cruel as any other Hylian, then I don't even want to think about his name, let alone utter it. Is that a crime now?
It is if you are doing it before you talk to him. Must you be so dramatic?
It's not dramatic! If he saw no reason to treat me with respect then I don't—
Honestly, Revali… Medoh cut him off, It would not kill you to hold off on your judgement a moment longer. Now be still and hold your tongue. Revali's vision suddenly gained a faint blue hue. The Divine Beast was using his eyes.
The stable. Look again.
Revali did as he was told, but wasn't sure what he was looking for. The blue of Medoh's presence made everything blend together. …What? What is it?
…He is coming. It would seem that much like you, he has no intentions of wasting time.
Wait, what-?! Revali's feathers puffed in alarm. He shook his head and blinked several times, willing Medoh's vision away. Sure enough, there he was, walking down the path towards the now-panicking Rito. His head was down, so Revali couldn't see his face, just locks of burgundy that were much duller than they should've been, even under moonlight.
His time was running out.
No no no no no, not now! Revali hid behind a tree, hoping his feathers would blend in with the foliage. How long has he-? I don't even know what I'll-! He grabbed at his frazzled crest, Medoh, help me out here!! What do I do-?!
As I said before, what happens next depends on you. Both of you, and no one else. I refuse to interfere.
You couldn't give me a better warning, at least-?! Revali mentally yelled as he frantically smoothed down his feathers.
Calm yourself. Be patient and listen to his defense. Once all has been said, then you may pass your judgement. And not a moment sooner. Do you understand?
I… I…
Do you understand, Revali?
Revali's eyes started to burn, and he shut them tight. After a moment's hesitation, he finally relented. …Yes. I understand.
Good. I will leave you to settle this mess. Do not do anything rash, and do not act as though woe is all that betides you.
Was Medoh really about to just leave him to fend for himself here?? Sure, he never asked for Medoh's assistance in this matter, or any matter at all before, but him not asking never stopped her from meddling anyway!
I wish you the best of luck, my Champion. And with that, Medoh's presence was gone.
Of all the times to leave him alone… why now? It felt like Medoh had just thrown him to the wolves. Damned beast!!
All Revali could do was curl his hands into fists as he tried to force himself to calm down. Keep a straight face. Don't let the Hylian know that his will was unsteady. He had to be firm and direct, like always. He could do this. He had to do this. He—
…was cut off by the sound of someone gasping under their breath.
Oh dear Zephos and Cyclos, he couldn't do this.
Revali looked over his shoulder, and there he was, just a couple feet away.
He felt a brief chill as he stared into those pupilless purple eyes. Eyes that once shone with a light pink glow, eyes that once made him feel a number of different things. They were still rimmed with dark circles, implying that the Hylian either became a night owl from doing gods know what after dark, or he simply wasn't sleeping well.
Revali was afraid to find out the answer. But he already knew that through the conversation they were about to have, he'd get that answer anyway.
At Revali's lack of a reply, the Hylian ducked his head again, looking down at the ground. He raised it back up when Revali cleared his throat.
"Well, it's… good to know that you're punctual." Gods, even that was hard to say. He turned his back, waving the other over with a wing. "Follow me."
He heard footsteps following behind him, and that was enough for now.
~~~
Faron Woods was bigger than it looked on a map.
And in a way, that was a good thing. It meant that when Revali found a decent spot to sit, the view was lovely without looking too cramped or foreboding. The trees overhead provided cover, but still let streaks of blue light through, making even the leaves resemble sapphires. It was a scene worth painting, or taking a picture with the Sheikah Slate.
If things went well, Revali could look back on this clearing fondly. But if they didn't…
His feathers ruffled at the idea. Ignoring the urge to smooth them back down again, he glanced over at the Hy-
You are better off waiting until after your suspicions are confirmed or denied before you try something like this.
…at Dalex, who quickly turned away from him. Even under the shade of the trees, Revali could still see how disheveled he was. He was almost tempted to call this little meeting off and send Dalex back to the stable to rest. But it was too late to turn back; they were already here, and if Revali forced himself to delay this once more, he doubted he'd ever be able to fully shake off the shame.
Revali is many things, but a coward is not, nor shall it ever be, one of them.
He crossed his arms and braced himself. "You… you know exactly why I asked you to come here. Don't you." It was a statement, not a question.
Dalex's ears twitched as he nodded. His silence didn't sit well with Revali.
"You can't nod your way out of this. You and I both know that you can talk." If he looked away as soon as Dalex flinched, then it didn't happen, right?
Be patient. Do not do anything rash.
Revali sighed, "For the last few weeks, I've… been thinking about what I'd say to you. About… that." He couldn't hide the anger in his voice, only lower it. "I thought I'd have everything worked out, like I always do. But… I don't."
Dalex said nothing, the only indication that he was still listening being the twitching of his ears.
"You…" He crossed his arms, "We both know what you did. I don't see any need to waste time pointing it all out." And if he did so, he'd either crack or succumb to rage, and he wasn't about to do either.
Yet again, Dalex said nothing, but his ears drooped impossibly lower.
"There… ever since you… 'revealed' yourself to me, there've been nothing but questions running through my head. So many questions. And every time I thought about asking you, I just…" He squeezed his arms, willing his feathers not to ruffle. Now was not the time for that.
At the third lack of a reply, Revali felt his patience wane. They'll be sitting here til dawn at this rate.
"I'd like you to look me in the eye when I'm speaking to you, Sta-… Dalex." His crest lowered at the near slip-up.
He felt a wave of regret when Dalex finally did look at him. A light breeze had tousled the bangs that normally covered half of Dalex's face, revealing the right side that was hidden from everyone despite looking just as normal as the left.
He looks so exhausted…
If Revali was wrong in the end, that sight wouldn't be leaving his memories any time soon.
"I suppose I will just say it, then…" His beak hung open, piles of questions forming in his throat as though they were at war over which one could come out first. In the end, he settled on the one that was there the longest:
"Why did you pretend to be the Sta-… him?"
Dalex blinked, clearly expecting something else. For Revali to yell again, perhaps? Like he did that night? Part of him wanted to. But just asking that one question took all the anger out of him, leaving nothing but hollow longing.
You were at your happiest when you were with him. If the way he acted as the Starling had any hint of truth, then I want you to be able to see that.
Revali didn't need night vision to see the hints of reluctance in Dalex's eyes. "I won't yell, or scream, or cut you off, none of that. I want to hear what you have to say."
Listen to his defense. Once all has been said, then you may pass your judgement. And not a moment sooner.
He saw Dalex's mouth twitch, and he bowed his head. "…Please."
He heard Dalex take a deep breath, and then…
"I… I just wanted a break."
Revali raised his head, confused. A… break? "From what?"
"Everything." Dalex's shoulders fell, and his breath hitched. "I've been training to be the Legendary Hero for so long… I couldn't do anything but train, no one would allow me to do anything else. Not when Ganon could show up at any time and destroy everything. I had to follow Her Highness everywhere she went, even if she hated my guts and wanted nothing to do with me. I have to listen to other knights acting like jealous little pricks because I got the Master Sword and they didn't."
Revali winced at that last statement, but thankfully Dalex had already covered his face with his hand.
"Everyone looks at me like I'm either a god amongst men that will save them all or the bane of their existence, and I just-" He stopped, his whole body shuddering. "…Do you remember what I said at Warbler's Nest?"
He most certainly did. How could he forget?
"My life had barely gotten started and I already had to give it up. I couldn't say no; my-… what I had to do, what I still have to do is too important. Is… is it wrong if I'm upset about it…?"
Revali told him otherwise that night… He held the Sta- Dalex's wing in his own and told him that it wasn't fair.
"If I were in your wings, I’d be completely furious.”
"All this time, I never got the chance to do anything unless I had a reason, a damn good one at that. If it wasn't necessary for my role as the Hero, then I couldn't do it. I wasn't… I'm not supposed to be anything but the Hero."
Were… were Revali's ears tricking him or did he just hear a sniffle?
"I… have to be the Hero. I can't be anything else. Not until Ganon's gone. But I…" He pushed his bangs away, eyes now shining with unshed tears. "I was just so tired."
You look like you're still tired. Revali thought to himself. "That's why you used the mask?"
Dalex rubbed his eyes, nodding. "I didn't- I wasn't trying to… to quit, or anything, I'd never do that. I just, I just wanted to get away from it, for a little while."
"But… surely you've heard about those things before. Many have claimed that they'll curse those foolish enough to wear them." Revali personally didn't believe in such things, but he heard it through the grapevine plenty of times, especially near the end of autumn.
"Yeah… I know. That's what I said to the guy that gave me the mask in the first place." A tear fell before he could stop it, and Revali felt a chill run down his spine at the hero's admission. "But… but that first night, I just kept thinking about everything. About my duty, about Her Highness, about Ganon, about y-…"
About… me? Revali's heart fluttered, and he couldn't fathom why.
"I couldn't… I couldn't handle it anymore. I put it on, turned into- into him, and…"
"…Bumped into me." Revali finished. He remembered that night clearly as well. He never thought a Rito could be so clumsy, crashing into him just as he reached his favorite landing. That could've been the only time they ever interacted, but… "…Why spend your 'break' with me, then?"
Dalex made a choked noise, like he was holding back a sob.
"We both know that I've made my… opinions on your status as the Hero very clear. By all means, you should've wanted to avoid me as much as the princess avoids you. Yet you sought out my company above anyone else's."
"I-I wasn't- I mean, I didn't-" Dalex stammered, rubbing his eyes. "I just thought… I thought that things would be different. If I didn't have that damn sword."
Revali tilted his head. "Different?"
Dalex suddenly glared, the tear streaks somehow making his expression even more intense. "Everything I said to you as… as him. Think about what those things were."
Revali was struck silent as memories rushed to the front of his mind, one after another.
"Revali, that was incredible! How're you able to hit so many bullseyes from so far away?!"
"I never thought your bow would have so much weight to it… you're stronger than you look!"
"You're really lucky you get to see your mom all the time… I can't wait to see mine again."
"You know, I was wondering… You've picked up a lot of blacksmithing know-how from your mom. More than I've ever heard, at least. What made you turn to archery, anyway?"
"Ugh, how can you stand carrots? They're awful! Wha- EWWW! Keep them away from me, you- you featherbrain!"
"I never thought there'd be so many uses for your feathers… You guys are like, masters at repurposing."
"Fly across the Gerudo Desert, huh… I never thought about what lay beyond all that sand… but if your dad came from somewhere out there, then yeah, there's gotta be something! It's not like Hyrule is the only place with life in it, after all!"
"Maybe the other Champions were blessed. That's all well and good, but… I have to agree with you, nothing can beat hard work to get where you need to be. And your Gale is… It's more than just a skill. It's literally the start of a whole new legacy for all the Rito."
And one memory in particular stood out amongst all the others:
"To be honest, Revali… I can't remember the last time I talked to someone about anything other than my-… my journey. How important it is, how 'honorable' and 'noble' it is… I'm sick of hearing that. I just want to talk about literally anything else, and… I can, with you. It… It's nice, is what I'm saying."
Dalex, the Legendary Hero, the Hylian Champion, the mightiest knight in all of Hyrule… had said those words right to Revali's face.
"Would you have believed me if I said them the way I am now?" At Revali's silence, Dalex chuckled. "Thought so… You know, hearing you actually have a problem with me being the Hero… it was refreshing, in a way."
"Wh-Refreshing?" Revali was taken aback, "I fail to see how-"
"You didn't like that I had the sword, yeah. But… you weren't a complete ass about it. You at least offered to let me prove myself to you a few times instead of moaning and groaning nonstop." Like that time he suggested they battle on Medoh's back, followed by him bailing from Dalex's lack of a response. Not one of Revali's better moments…
"And… I've seen the way you act when, uh, 'off duty,' I guess. 'Specially around kids. It's sweet."
Revali's feathers ruffled at the compliment. It was true, he'd been known to dote on the children back in Rito Village; offering archery lessons, cooking large meals to feed them in groups, telling stories of his battles against the more powerful monsters, and so on. He'd caught Dalex listening in only once, but that was apparently enough.
"But… whenever you spoke to me, it always came back to my title. That stupid sword. And I just…" Dalex sighed, rubbing his arm. "I thought that… maybe if I didn't have it, then I'd actually get to talk to you. I'd been wanting to, anyway…"
"Have you now…?" Something about that statement made Revali's heart beat just a little faster.
"And I did. And it was… probably some of, if not the best nights I've ever had in my life. I could finally be… me. I actually remembered how to do that, even after a decade of being the Hero." Dalex's smile fell as soon as it came. "But as time went by, and I got to know you more, I…"
"…You what?"
"I started to realize it- it still wasn't-" Dalex pinched his brow, struggling to find his words. "It still wasn't me. Not in your eyes. Could I really count as your friend when you didn't even know who I really was?" He stopped to sniffle before continuing, "That's… that's why I…"
"…You took off the mask in front of me." Revali finished for him.
Dalex nodded, crossing his arms. "You… you deserve a real friend. Someone that can actually speak to you without needing to hide behind a mask the whole time. When I realized what I was doing, I… I had to stop it. I was being selfish and I was hurting you and…" He stopped to take a breath, then raised his eyes to meet Revali's. "And I'm so sorry."
Had… Had Dalex ever apologized for this before? Revali couldn't remember; most of that night became a blur due to his heartbreak and rage. He wouldn't be surprised if his outburst prevented Dalex from doing just that.
Hearing it now, though… it felt real. Revali wanted it to be real, so badly.
"You… you don't have to worry about me using it anymore. The mask, I mean. I threw it away." Dalex briefly looked away to growl under his breath, "Whoever finds it can have it, for all I care…"
Now the former, Revali remembered hearing Dalex say, before Revali silenced him with a gale as he fled. And thanks to a little (er, big) birdy, Revali had undeniable proof that Dalex had completely abandoned the mask. It took a fair bit of strength to not admit that he knew already, and that said mask was now hidden away in his own home.
As for what Revali could say… was there anything? Dalex had said his piece, so…
Listen to his defense. Once all has been said, then you may pass your judgement.
"…I would say that I knew what to think about all of this… but frankly, I don't." He ran a wing through his crest, "If I hadn't blown up at you when I did, then maybe you would've said all this already. Maybe we'd already know where to go from here. Or have an idea, at least…"
Dalex fell silent once more, ears twitching at his words.
I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but… Medoh was right. I was too prepared. Now I don't know what to do.
"I… don't know if I forgive you yet. Or even at all." He didn't see Dalex wince. He didn't. "But… It doesn't seem like you're lying, at least."
He did see the stunned look cross Dalex's face. Once again, it looked as though he was expecting Revali to say something else. An accusation, perhaps? A blatant disregard of his reasons behind everything that's happened between them?
When Revali thought about it, Dalex hadn't so much as tried to beg or fish for forgiveness in the entire conversation… Was he preparing for the worst too? If he was, then that would mean he…
The possibility is there. You know this. That he truly felt remorse for hurting you so.
Revali rubbed his temples as he felt a headache come on. The constant mental back-and-forths haven't been doing him any favors these past few weeks. He was so tired…
"Are… are you alright?" Revali heard the concern in Dalex's voice, and waved it off with a wing.
"I'm fine." Without giving Dalex a chance to reply, he started to stand. "…We should head back."
It was an abrupt end, Revali knew this. And he was pretty sure that they'd have to talk about this a bit more before Revali could make a decision. But again, he was tired. This whole conversation was probably the most exhausting thing he'd experienced in weeks, and all he'd mostly done was sit and listen. At this point, he just wanted to curl up in a cheap stable bed and sleep.
He was so tired, in fact, that he didn't even think twice about offering his wing to Dalex, who took it without uttering another word. Nothing was said when he gave that smaller hand a mild squeeze, and nothing was said when he held onto it, only letting go once they exited Faron Woods.
It wasn't the wing Revali held at Warbler's Nest all those nights ago. Not even close.
But… it still felt the same.
Jewelry
I'm working on an actual "start of the story"-story for my (still untitled) Links Meet AU but have also been writing little snippets to start getting a handle on personalities and interactions. I liked how this one came out!
Fandom: Legend of Zelda (Not LU!) Characters: Legend, Wild, Mask Rated: PG (mild language) Wordcount: 680
“Y’even wear that outfit when you’re climbing up on mountains? With snow? Don’t you get cold?” Mask’s slightly louder than necessary question turned a few nearby heads, Legend’s included. Wild didn’t appear to be bothered by the extra attention.
“Sometimes, if it’s cold enough. That’s why I wear this.” She thumbed the jewel centered in the circlet over her brow, then bumped one opal earring with a curled finger to make it flash in the light. “These have an enchantment, too, but I’m just wearing them today because they’re pretty.”
Ravio and Men turned back to the ledgers they’d been pouring over. But Legend, sensing a more interesting conversation, twisted around to peer over the back of his chair towards where Wild and Mask sat at the dining table. “Is all your jewelry enchanted?” he wanted to know.
“Most of it. I helped someone out who makes them, she gives me good prices. I’ve commissioned a few mundane things from her too.”
“What kinds of enchantments?”
“Mostly elemental effects. Protection and the like. Why?”
Ravio gave him a shove and a cross look; he was probably being distracting, calling across the room like this. Legend got up from the couch and instead dropped down to sit across from Wild at the table where she and Mask had been swapping stories that, so far as Legend could tell, had meandered away from comparisons of their versions of Death Mountain to, somehow, climbing things.
He held out a hand, on which glittered some of the things he’d managed to bring back from his adventures abroad; the rings that had been on his fingers and looped on a cord around his neck when he shipwrecked for the second and final time. He pointed to the one with a heart-cut ruby set in gold. “This one has a slow healing effect.”
Now fully interested, Wild bent over Legend’s hand, asking after the rest. It didn’t take long for both of them to be bringing out everything they had on them, comparing the spells.
Mask’s eyes darted between them, watching and listening with his chin propped up on his hands and his swaying feet occasionally finding Legend’s knees and shins beneath the table. Eventually, he seemed to tire of the topic. “Masks are better,” he declared, with just a hint of defiance and a challenging gleam in his eye.
“You trying to start shit, pipsqueak?” Legend demanded, squawking when Mask kicked him again, deliberately this time.
Wild nudged him with her elbow. “If you used them enough to be titled after them, I can’t say I’m surprised. Sometimes it’s nice to feel pretty, though.” She patted at the jeweled band around her bun.
“I’ve got a mask for that, too.”
“A mask for feeling pretty?”
“This I’ve got to see,” Legend said dryly.
“Is it one of those fancy ones with lots of beads and ribbons like the Rito use in their festivals?” Wild guessed.
Mask shook his head. Grinning, he ducked under the table. When he sat back up, he had on a mask depicting a feminine face that trailed long streams of bright fuschia hair, all wreathed in plants. It had an ethereal quality to it that made Legend squint with niggling recognition. He saw Wild doing much the same.
“Huh,” Legend said.
Wild ran her hand down one of the mask’s multiple ponytails. “It’s got nice hair?” she offered. She pulled her hand back, an abrupt motion, staring between her fingers and what they’d just been touching as if they’d done something unexpected. “That’s, uh. Floating?”
“Wait, it is?” Mask twisted around to look. The hair streamed after him, drifting up and around as if following the movement on a gentle current. “It is! You two can sit here and talk about your jewelry, I gotta go find the fairy. Bye.”
With that, he shoved away from the table, twisting his head from side to side before following some unknown prompting of direction from the mask and trotting towards the door.
Wild and Legend both blinked.
“Wait, it finds fairies?” Legend yelped.
Let's go with the Rito flagship Revalink for 001
And Mipha for 002
001: Revalink
Hehehe, oh boy here we go...
So I got BotW back in March 2021, and by mid-April-ish had started Age of Calamity. Just before I did the "Calamity Strikes" mission is when the brainworms for "The Realm Walker" started burrowing. I wrote short story versions of what would become "The Ballad of Kass" and an unintended longfic "The Tale of the Realm Walker." (It was going to be the Cliff Notes version but blew up into me making a whole damn Zelda game basically, a ~200 page thing that I still haven't wrote the ending for, and that I'm trying to rewrite as soon as I settle on which of like four different versions to go with...)
I wasn't active in the Zelda fandom at this point (which is how I went 4 years with no spoilers and having no idea about the game's story), and had no idea Revalink was a thing, but Link and Revali becoming friends over the course of my fic was something that needed to happen. It was honestly part of the reason I wrote it other than general "What if the Champions were possessed and Link could save them?" and "Oh, let me reuse this concept from this Zelda/Final Fantasy crossover idea I had ages ago!" (Ildia basically...)
One random comment on some fan art in late January 2022 started a very long conversation, and I got introduced to some fanfics by @coconi and others, all Revalink. This got me on AO3 and more or less into the ship...
So that's a long way to answer the first question... Sometime in 2022 is when I was introduced to the ship.
My thoughts: Hmm... I think that, had Revali lived and the game been something like older Zeldas with companions, then Link and Revali would have had the chance to come to an understanding. Revali was basically projecting his own issues onto Link, because Link wouldn't even acknowledge him by saying anything or even emoting. This ruffled his feathers, so it's part of the reason he was such a jerk. Had they traveled together, they could have become friends, or at least frienemies. (Kinda like Groose in Skyward Sword perhaps. Actually you could kind of mirror Link and Midna's relationship too, where at first she's just using him and full of snark and they bond over the course of the game. Or Link and Tatl (I think I got that right? The fairy from Majora's Mask in any case...)
What makes me happy about them: Them being friends. Revali having issues expressing his feelings (or being in total denial) and Link being totally oblivious. I like the fics where Link trades snark with Revali.
What makes me sad about them: Revali dying, and the fact that they never had a chance to understand one another (in canon, while Revali was alive anyway).
Things done in fanfic that annoy me: I haven't encountered anything about them yet that I could say annoys me. Well there was a fic, "A Memory Scavenger Hunt," that had Link being super angsty towards the end and not talking about his problems and that was stressing Revali out. I was shouting at my computer that Link just needed to tell him what was going on. But I guess that's a good kind of annoyance, hahaha!
Things I look for in fanfic: I can't say I look for anything in particular.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Hmm... As I'm not much of a shipper, I suppose it doesn't much matter. Though I do put Revali and Bedoli together in my fic. I mentioned one time that I didn't want a Link-Mipha-Zelda love triangle and someone suggested Link/Paya, and yeah I could see that (or Link/Mipha, or Link/Zelda). Haven't figured out what I'm doing with Link on that front yet...
My happily ever after for them: Them coming to an understanding and being friends or friendly rivals (platonic version). If I were to do a Revalink AU of my fic (an AU of an AU if you will), they'd get together and have Bedoli and Paya surrogate children, Medah (Revali and Bedoli's daughter) would grow up to be a melee fighter to be like Papa Link while Link/Paya's kid would grow up to be an archer like Papa Revali. I just think that's a cute idea... Not gonna write it though, got way too much work to do on the regular version hahaha!
Who is the big spoon/little spoon: Revali's the big spoon. Link's wrapped up in fluffy warm Rito wings for sure. Revali's probably got his beak in Link's hair.
What is their favorite non-sexual activity: Well since Link likes cooking then them just chilling and eating together. That or braiding, etc. each other's hair. Maybe training/sparing?
For 002, Mipha
How I feel about this character: Hm... I'mma refer you to a later question on this...
All the people I ship romantically with this character: As someone who's not a shipper, I don't have any real preferences I guess. Link cause why not? I've never read Miphvali fics, but wouldn't have anything against it...
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Why not Link? They are most certainly close friends. In fact, I'll spoil things for my fic (even more I guess, though it's already posted so perhaps not as much of a spoiler?) but before the Great Calamity, Link thought of Mipha as his big sister. Had no idea she was romantically interested in him and was stunned to realize this fact when he remembers her. "How could I have been so dense?! It was so obvious she had feelings for me!" Him trying to figure out how to tell this to her, as well as figure out his current feelings is a big thing in "Shifting Tides of Fate."
My unpopular opinion about this character: I honestly wasn't that impressed with her when I first played BotW. I was like, "Zora princess wants to marry Link, didn't you guys do this already?" Just using BotW, I'd have ranked the Champions like so:
Urbosa (loved her the moment I saw her memory cutscene and just loved her more during her post-Divine Beast freeing monologue)
Revali (Well the Rito are my favorite Zelda race, and I did want to see what all the fuss was about (had seen a little bit of fanart of him). Was like "oh no he's a jerk!" but he has more personality than the other two...)
Daruk (meh)
Mipha (meh)
Now this isn't to say I dislike Daruk or Mipha, it's just that they don't get enough screen time or stand out really. After playing Age of Calamity I actually got attached to the Champions, cause, you know, you could play as them and they got some significant screen time. So I reordered them...
Urbosa (still my fave even if I don't use her that much)
Revali (kinda liked the "unfinished business from an interrupted duel" thing)
Mipha (she's fun to play, her jumping out of the water move makes it easy to hit monsters in the head)
Daruk (he's feels too slow for the pace of the game)
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Not died? Or at least gotten more development so her death could have had more impact?
My OTP: Can't really say I have one for her...
My cross over ship: Don't have one of these either...
A headcanon fact: Well this is going into a Zora headcanon post I have planned for later but... Mipha and Sidon are biologically half-siblings. Polygamy is common among Zora, especially royalty, but they don't make the half-sibling distinction, all children are treated the same. They have different mothers, and that explains the height difference as well as Sidon's sharky features. Could also play into something that was mentioned in TotK but I won't spoil it here.
Whew, this was long! But fun! Anyway, thanks for the ask!
Out of Mind, Madness In Spades
Some more info on the Out of Mind AU involving Wild and Hank J. Wimbleton! I purposely cut out some important information just for this.
Let's start off with Mad Oversoul. Hank is not the only one in Wild's mind. Truth is that there are gonna be three more additions who join as the duo tackle the Divine Beasts. Each domain having a piece of the Four Sword, these fragments containing a spirit from Hank's universe etched inside. This mean Wild has access to four different forms. Here's some notes from Purah and Symin about it.
'Mad Oversoul, a mysterious power allowing Link to merge with these maddening spirits from another world. It seems each one holds their own unique boons but with the dangerous risk of altering his mind bit by bit. Also appears that Link's wrists are fading as well.- Purah
(Wild isn't going to have any wrists at the end of his adventure. His hands are gonna be constantly floating.)
'Wild Hank, the Oversoul created by Link and his spirit Hank J. Wimbleton merging together. A ruthless combatant who prefers chopping or impaling his opponents. Special weapon is the mysterious Dragon Sword, a seemingly unbreakable blade with mysterious characters written on it. Hank said it means 'Crush, Kill, Destroy' in Thai. I wasn't surprised.' - Symin
The Shrine of Resurrection had taken these spirits before disconnecting from the Other Side and thought these fragments would serve as perfect storage. Pieces of the Four Sword act like a compass with one piece capable of detecting the others.
Now let's get to the spirits...
Rito Village
Revali's known for his prim yet arrogant demeanor alongside his elegant precise battle style. The spirit housed in the Four Sword fragment found near Rito Village is far from it. An unhinged chaotic entity but also one of Hank's worse enemies: Tricky the Clown!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite his low kill count of 18 (11 non-canon wise) and 14 deaths, Tricky isn't no pushover. This zombie clown possesses the Improbability Drive, a device capable of bending reality around him. Often uses it to revive himself, gain superhuman strength/speed and insane hand to hand combat skills. It however made Tricky completely insane personality wise but he does have some civility. (This civility affects his kill count as Tricky prefers to torture his targets, not anyone else.)
He actually joins Wild much easier than Hank as this clown is very curious. Something that can be peaked by exploring Link's world (and let Tricky killing as many monsters he wants.) Mad Oversoul with Tricky is triggered by mental breakdowns, insanity or wearing a mask that covers his face. Overuse causes Wild to lose some of his sanity.
Wild's skin takes a rotted green appearance whilst some of his flesh to even bone becomes exposed, hair reddens alongside gaining waves mimicking Tricky's hair, mouth becomes partially similar to a corpse, and mask morphes to match Tricky's.
'Feral Trick, the Oversoul of Link and the mad clown Tricky. A vicious undead specimen that loves to torment his opponents before tearing them apart! It seems that there's a much greater power waiting to be unleashed... His main weapon is a strange metal pole called an Emergency Sign. Didn't Hank said he impaled Tricky with it?' - Purah
A chatterbox that likes talking to Wild or annoying the hell out of the other spirits in his head. Hank absolutely hates Tricky so headaches are bound to happen as the two argue before Link tunes them out.
Death Mountain
Daruk was a gentle brotherly Goron who used his incredible strength and durability to defend others. The spirit contained inside the Four Sword fragment stuck in the back of a Molten Talus isn't so nice. A large brute that takes his job seriously and tears apart those that hinder it: MAG Agent Torture!
Tumblr media
MAGs are augmented Grunts made bigger, stronger and very dangerous with inhuman pain tolerance. Torture is no exception as the metal stakes through his head barely affect him. Almost like he was transformed with those things already inside...
Link has to appeal to Torture's sense of purpose in order to get his consensual assistance as returning home doesn't really matter to the MAG. Torture's insane pain tolerance is at the point where he can be shot in the head and view it as an annoyance. (Man literally sent Hank flying like a golf ball after being shot a few times in the head.)
Mad Oversoul with MAG Agent Torture can be triggered through immense pain, loyalty or aggravation. Overuse runs the risk of becoming more aggressive and less empathetic. Wild's size doubles, grows metallix horns and tusks mimicking Torture's stakes, nails become sharp black claws, and eyes turn blood red from a newly formed second eyelid.
'Savage Torture, the Oversoul of Link and the relentless giant MAG Agent Torture. It seems the spirit's "Magnification" perks have transfered to this violent stern giant! Strikes from swords, arrows and even magic seems to piss him off more than cause harm. If Savage Torture isn't ripping his opponent in half, then that handheld cannon called a 'shotgun' will blow their heads off. Absolutely terrifying.' -Symin
Wild does try to expand Torture's view on things, that there is more to life than just serving some purpose. Thoughtfulness that the MAG is thankful for although he might strangle Tricky and Hank if they don't stop their bullshit.
Gerudo Town
Urbosa, a fierce yet kind Gerudo Chief whose fighting style is a graceful dance. The spirit found in the Four Sword fragment located in Gerudo Town's Royal Palace... not so much. A jokester whose carelessness got him killed and was remade by the Other Side's brutal hold: Deimos or Dedmos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This wisecracking former smoker holds a very high kill count just like his coworker Hank ranging around 245 kills (46 non canon). If it isn't his technical genius or advances skill in firearms, then the newfound geokinesis, ability to magnify others, and enhanced strength/durability/perception make Deimos a serious threat.
Like Tricky, it's easy to earn Deimos/Dedmos assistance in exchange for checking these Divine Beasts and Guardian tech. Carelessness, disinterest and playfulness triggers his Mad Oversoul. Overuse makes Wild lazier and more careless.
Stone encases Wild's mouth, upper chest, hands and back, skin takes on a rock like hardness, cracks cover part of his face, stone spikes come out of his skin in patches.
'Primitive Rockmos, the Oversoul of Link and wisecracking mercenary Deimos. A unique mix of organic and inorganic materials to form a hybrid golem. One punch from this fighter can turn a Talus into pure dust. Seems he can even dent Guardian armor too! Apparently some kind of chain and dagger made from some unknown material is his preferred weapon.' - Purah
Wild gets along very well with Deimos thankfully. Although he tries to give the Champion flirting tips or let him mess with the Sheikah Slate. Plus he can help drown out any arguments from the others.
Now you noticed that I mentioned the other Champions alongside placing contradictory characters in the areas associated to them. This is because Wild is gonna be interacting with Calamity and his Hyrule's version of champions. It ain't going to be pretty that's for sure.
Don't know if he'll get involved in Age of Calamity w/o the Chain (definitely toss away the whole Terrako lore), but the AOC cast will still interact with Wild and the Madcom characters in his head.
Calamity and Wild will NOT get along so easily especially if the latter's personality got altered a bit due to overusing Mad Oversoul on his journey. How bad? Well, the two definitely punch each other in the face multiple times and got into a fight at least twice.
Like I said in the last post, the Chain are gonna have a very difficult getting Wild to join especially if Calamity is present. Something made harder thanks to the inclusion of Tricky, Deimos and Torture in the Champion's head. Like Hank, they nor Wild are joining the quest unless something of interest is offered.
The Four Sword fragments Wild collected shall come together but it won't exactly be the same sword that Four once used. It becomes a blade reforged through madness and guardian energy given the name Fourth Sin.
No one can wield Fourth Sin except for Wild, it WILL burn any who dares try even Calamity. These burns are unable to heal unless purified as the madness within the injuries nullifies any kind of healing. Injuries from the Fourth Sin causes the wounded to become a target for any undead or corrupted creature. Monsters will even ignore their opponents just to kill those marked by the maddening blade.
The Fourth Sin has more to it than just that but I ain't telling. All you need to know is Wild is much more dangerous than any member of the Chain. Not even Four knows just how deadly this redition of the Four Sword is.
That's all I have for now! Until next time folks, I'll see you back in Hyrule.
Look, if I’m gonna have a phantom Lace / detective Hornet AU, we can’t forget about the other characters! Especially Ghost. Honestly, I’m surprised it took me so long to make a design for them lol
Anyways! Here are my concepts for human Ghost and the Hollow Knight!
HK’s design was actually made a couple of months ago, I just don’t think I ever posted it?? Though as of yet, I don’t have a full reference for them. Though I imagine them probably wearing boots of some kind, and long pants (though idk what color I would make either of them).
I did give them the same hair color as Hornet, just cause I think it matched well and, well, they’re siblings so it would make sense lol. I did make their skin a bit lighter though! As for the rest of their outfit… I gave them a longer coat, to kinda represent the cloak, though I guess I could also afford to make it look a little more worn out. Metal shoulder bits, a bit of call to their role as a knight (although here, HK has a bit of a… different role :)) hehe). And I think the dark turtleneck is a nice touch (an homage to the lines of their in-game cloak)!
Their hair… I just think it suits them! A bit messy, but their hair is more neat than Hornet’s is, even if they don’t know hair care very well… they got the good genes. I was also kinda thinking of Alphonse Elric when thinking about their design, something a bit lankier and messy. And it wouldn’t be HK without a missing arm, a damaged eye, and a permanent hunchbacked position (although that is not as prominent in their human form).
As for Ghost’s design… I had sketched them out during a lull during class and was just experimenting at first! I wanted them to have messier, unkempt hair, though I also wanted it a bit shorter. Though the two tied pieces in front of their face is the exception to the messiness, though honestly it somehow suits them! At first I just had regular side-hair parts, but I wanted to kinda represent the two horns the Ghost has in the game without having to stick more pieces of their hair up, and so… yeah I experimented a bit! At first I took a bit of inspiration from one of BOTW Link’s hair in the Rito outfit, but this turned out a bit better I think!
As for the outfit… I just think they’d be pretty casual, aka go more for comfort rather than fashion. A baggier jacket (with the main color being color-picked from one of Ghost’s official arts), a dark shirt because it both looks cool and mirrors Ghost’s in-game design, torn-up jeans color-picked from the Knight’s nail in the same art that I color-picked for the jacket, and tennis shoes, perfect for running around in to cause chaos. They also have a mask, and with their hood over their head, it’s perfect to hide in dark corners and jump across rooftops without anyone the wiser.
Anyways, uh… I don’t know what I want their roles to be quite just yet, but! I do have a few ideas that I’ll share later! Honestly I don’t even have much of a main story in mind, though I’ve been trying to brainstorm one up. Once again, I’ll share my ideas for this AU later. I’ve talked enough about just the designs here lol!
