this quote was a HUGE part of gravity falls, and let us towards the main part of the story... but it's a lot truer than we think.

in this post i'm going to explain how stanley isn't really himself.

As we saw in the flashback episode (where Stan and Ford were growing up), we saw that eventually, Stan got kicked out and was living on his own and traveling. However, he never leaves gravity falls once Ford gets lost in the portal, what I consider the beginning of the end.

Watching what happened to Ford must've scared Stan shitless. He would've been confused, scared, anxious, and eventually depressed and probably paranoid as well.

When Stan opens the mystery shack as an attraction, he's only doing it as an act, and we all know that, but i don't think Stan ever dropped the act. Stan eventually hires Wendy and Soos, two people who are almost around, and Stan is out enough that he doesn't like certain people and vice versa. Then when Dipper and Mable move in, Stan is forced to keep up the act, and it probably gets easier, but it's still an act so he can keep the shack and fix the portal to save Ford.

We've got to remember that anything and everything Stan does throughout the series is either for Ford or the twins, but for most of his life, it was for Ford. Every single move that Stan made, he had to consider if in any way, would it get the shack in trouble or taken from him?

So Stan went to crime, getting people to get him things in less than legal ways, probably because of money and because buying those things would put him on a watchlist. And even though he dabbled in crime earlier, he really got deep into it for Ford.

Back to the statement about Stan doing everything for Ford or the twins. Stan would've had to consider every possible outcome, he would've had to insure that the shack wouldn't be taken because of anything he did. Because no shack = no Ford.

Ford was probably on his mind 24/7 at first. Sleepless nights in the basements or nightmares about the memory, during the day being haunted by the fact that he was living as his brother, and this is what Ford was supposed to be doing, everything in the Shack a constant reminder of his fuckup.

But as time went on, getting Ford back began affecting Stan's subconscious, and now, whether or not Stan likes it, he always considers Ford, even if he doesn't realize it. Stan didn't and couldn't make a move without his brother's influence.

And in that, Stan began loosing himself. As mentioned, he became paranoid, depressed, confused, scared, and his only positive emotions were almost always an act to keep the shack so he could save Ford, who he always thought about, even if he didn't realize it.

When Ford gets angry at Stan for saving him and reopening the portal, he doesn't realize what he's done to Stan because he probably doesn't know.

Ford had no idea what Stan had to go through every single day, the guilt of what Stan had done, the paranoia, the depression, the crimes, the acting, it had all lead up to this, and Ford was angry at Stan for it.

Stan had lost himself trying to save his brother, and once Ford was angry at him, Stan probably didn't know what to do. He was probably lost, he'd spent so much time putting and keeping up acts and walls and now there wasn't a reason to.

But Stan didn't try to find himself or break the act, he kept it up, probably since it was the only thing he'd known for decades. So physically, yes, Stan was Stan, but mentally, he hadn't been for years.

 This is basically my first try to write a fanfic :D 

The main character is a young adult, living alone in Gravity Falls. Due to the town's habit of being such a weird place, she isn't safe either. In other words, weird things keep happening. All this mess started in the summer of 2014, two years after Mabel and Dipper's first arrival. 

[ I tried to make this Y/N, but using my OC (in the cover) feels more natural to me. Her name is Elmu and you'll get to know her better as the story goes on. 

P.S. Spoiler alert, this is just me pretending to live there so there's going to be more than just swooning over grunkles. Buuut... This is will be a Ford x reader because who can resist a fluffy old man?]

Reposting outside the Grunkles shopping cart race thread, because I really had a great time working on this. It’s been a while since I’ve felt like drawing for fun, and this came along just in time to make my birthday special. The Grunkles had to go back to the store on St. Patrick’s Day, because the kids wanted some Lexy Charms. (I spent easily as much time on the cereal box as I did on the boys.)
